Search

We report the discovery of a high-velocity, very low-mass star or brown dwarf whose kinematics suggest it is unbound to the Milky Way. CWISE J124909.08+362116.0 was identified by citizen scientists in the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 program as a high-proper-motion ( μ = 0.″9 yr ^−1 ) faint red source. Moderate-resolution spectroscopy with Keck/NIRES reveals it to be a metal-poor early L subdwarf with a large radial velocity (−103 ± 10 km s ^−1 ), and its estimated distance of 125 ± 8 pc yields a speed of 456 ± 27 km s ^−1 in the Galactic rest frame, near the local escape velocity for the Milky Way. We explore several potential scenarios for the origin of this source, including ejection from the Galactic center ≳3 Gyr in the past, survival as the mass donor companion to an exploded white dwarf, acceleration through a three-body interaction with a black hole binary in a globular cluster, and accretion from a Milky Way satellite system. CWISE J1249+3621 is the first hypervelocity very low-mass star or brown dwarf to be found and the nearest of all such systems. It may represent a broader population of very high-velocity, low-mass objects that have undergone extreme accelerations.

A comprehensive infrared spectroscopic study of star TRAPPIST-1 is a crucial step toward the detailed examination of its planets. While the presence of Earth’s atmosphere has limited the spectral extent of such a study up to now, the Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (NIRISS) and the Near Infrared Spectrograph instruments aboard the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) can now yield the 0.6–5 μ m spectral energy distribution (SED) of the star. Here we translate TRAPPIST-1's SED into tight constraints on its luminosity ( L _bol = 0.000566 ± 0.000022 L _⊙ ), effective temperature ( T _eff = 2569 ± 28 K), and metallicity ([Fe/H] = 0.052 ± 0.073) and investigate the behavior of its gravity-sensitive indices. Through band-by-band comparisons of the NIRISS and ground-based spectra, TRAPPIST-1 exhibits a blend of both field source and intermediate-gravity spectral characteristics, suggesting that the star is likely a field-age source with spectral features reminiscent of young objects. We also employ photospheric modeling incorporating theoretical and JWST spectra to constrain stellar surface heterogeneities, finding that the limited fidelity of current stellar spectral models precludes definitive constraints on the physical parameters of the distinct spectral components giving rise to TRAPPIST-1's photospheric heterogeneity and variability. In addition, we find intermodel differences in the inferences of properties (e.g., the effective temperature) over one order of magnitude larger than the instrument-driven uncertainties (∼100 K vs. ∼4 K), pointing toward a model-driven accuracy wall. Our findings call for a new generation of stellar models to support the optimal mining of JWST data and further constraining stellar—and ultimately planetary—properties.

We present the discovery of 118 new ultracool dwarf candidates, discovered using a new machine-learning tool, named SMDET , applied to time-series images from the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer. We gathered photometric and astrometric data to estimate each candidate’s spectral type, distance, and tangential velocity. This sample has a photometrically estimated spectral class distribution of 28 M dwarfs, 64 L dwarfs, and 18 T dwarfs. We also identify a T-subdwarf candidate, two extreme T-subdwarf candidates, and two candidate young ultracool dwarfs. Five objects did not have enough photometric data for any estimations to be made. To validate our estimated spectral types, spectra were collected for two objects, yielding confirmed spectral types of T5 (estimated T5) and T3 (estimated T4). Demonstrating the effectiveness of machine-learning tools as a new large-scale discovery technique.

We present precise measurements of radial (RV) and projected rotational ( $v\sin i$ ) velocities of a sample of 258 M6 to L2 dwarfs with multiepoch, high-resolution ( λ /Δ λ = 22,500), near-infrared (1.514–1.696 μ m) spectroscopic observations reported in the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment Data Release 17. The spectra were modeled using a Markov Chain Monte Carlo forward-modeling method, which achieved median precisions of σ _RV = 0.4 km s ^−1 and ${\sigma }_{v\sin i}$ = 1.1 km s ^−1 . One-half of our sample (138 sources) are previously known members of nearby young clusters and moving groups, and we identified three new kinematic members of the Argus or Carina Near moving groups, 2MASS J05402570+2448090, 2MASS J14093200+4138080, and 2MASS J21272531+5553150. Excluding these sources, we find that the majority of our sample have kinematics consistent with the Galactic thin disk, and 11 sources are associated with the intermediate thin/thick disk. The field sample has a velocity dispersion of 38.2 ± 0.3 km s ^−1 , equivalent to an age of 3.30 ± 0.19 Gyr based on empirical age–velocity dispersion relations, and a median $v\sin i$ of 17 km s ^−1 . For 172 sources with multiepoch observations, we identified 37 as having significant RV variations, and determined preliminary orbit parameters for 26 sources with four or more epochs, nine of which are short-period binary candidates. For 40 sources with photometric variability periods from the literature less than 5 days and $v\sin i$ > 20 km s ^−1 , we find a decline in projected radii ( $R\sin i$ ) with age congruent with evolutionary models. Finally, we also present multiepoch RV and $v\sin i$ measurements for additional 444 candidate ultracool dwarfs.

Globular clusters contain vast repositories of metal-poor stars that represent some of the oldest stellar generations in the Universe. The archaeological footprint of early Galactic evolution may be retained in the measurable properties of globular clusters, such as their ages, mass functions, and chemical abundances. Until recently, all photometric studies of globular clusters were restricted to stellar members. Now, the sensitivity of JWST can extend this analysis to the substellar regime. If detected in sufficient numbers, brown dwarf members can provide tight constraints on the properties of their parent population. We present SANDee —a new grid of stellar models that accurately represent the color–magnitude diagrams of globular clusters across the hydrogen-burning limit at a wide range of metallicities. Using JWST NIRCam photometry and the new models, we identify three brown dwarfs in the globular cluster NGC 6397 with T _eff = 1300–1800 K, confirmed by both proper motion and model fitting. We use the observed luminosities of discovered brown dwarfs to obtain the first age estimate of a globular cluster from its substellar cooling sequence: 13.4 ± 3.3 Gyr. We also derive the local mass function of the cluster across the hydrogen-burning limit and find it to be top heavy, suggesting extensive dynamical evolution. We expect that the constraints on both age and mass function of NGC 6397 derived in this work can be greatly improved by a second epoch of NIRCam imaging in the same field.

We present the discovery of VHS J183135.58−551355.9 (hereafter VHS J1831−5513), an L/T transition dwarf identified as a result of its unusually red near-infrared colors ( J − K _S = 3.633 ± 0.277 mag; J − W 2 = 6.249 ± 0.245 mag) from the VISTA Hemisphere Survey and CatWISE2020 surveys. We obtain low-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of VHS J1831−5513 using the Magellan Folded port InfraRed Echellette spectrograph to confirm its extremely red nature and assess features sensitive to surface gravity (i.e., youth). Its near-infrared spectrum shows multiple CH _4 absorption features, indicating an exceptionally low effective temperature for its spectral type. Based on proper-motion measurements from CatWISE2020 and a photometric distance derived from its K _s -band magnitude, we find that VHS J1831−5513 is a likely (∼85% probability) kinematic member of the β Pictoris moving group. Future radial velocity and trigonometric parallax measurements will clarify such membership. Follow-up mid-infrared or higher-resolution near-infrared spectroscopy of this object will allow for further investigation as to the cause(s) of its redness, such as youth, clouds, and viewing geometry.

We present the discovery of 13 new widely separated T dwarf companions to M dwarf primaries, identified using Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer/NEOWISE data by the CatWISE and Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 projects (hereafter BYW). This sample represents an ∼60% increase in the number of known M + T systems, and allows us to probe the most extreme products of binary/planetary system formation, a discovery space made available by the CatWISE2020 catalog and the BYW effort. Highlights among the sample are WISEP J075108.79-763449.6, a previously known T9 thought to be old due to its spectral energy distribution, which was found by Zhang et al. (2021b) to be part of a common proper motion pair with L34-26 A, a well-studied young M3 V star within 10 pc of the Sun; CWISE J054129.32-745021.5 B and 2MASS J05581644-4501559 B, two T8 dwarfs possibly associated with the very fast-rotating M4 V stars CWISE J054129.32745021.5 A and 2MASS J05581644-4501559 A; and UCAC3 52-1038 B, which is among the widest late-T companions to main-sequence stars, with a projected separation of ∼7100 au. The new benchmarks presented here are prime JWST targets, and can help us place strong constraints on the formation and evolution theory of substellar objects as well as on atmospheric models for these cold exoplanet analogs.

We report the identification of 89 new systems containing ultracool dwarf companions to main-sequence stars and white dwarfs, using the citizen science project Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 and cross-reference between Gaia and CatWISE2020. 32 of these companions and 33 host stars were followed up with spectroscopic observations, with companion spectral types ranging from M7–T9 and host spectral types ranging from G2–M9. These systems exhibit diverse characteristics, from young to old ages, blue to very red spectral morphologies, potential membership to known young moving groups, and evidence of spectral binarity in nine companions. 20 of the host stars in our sample show evidence for higher-order multiplicity, with an additional 11 host stars being resolved binaries themselves. We compare this sample’s characteristics with those of the known stellar binary and exoplanet populations, and find our sample begins to fill in the gap between directly imaged exoplanets and stellar binaries on mass ratio–binding energy plots. With this study, we increase the population of ultracool dwarf companions to FGK stars by ∼42%, and more than triple the known population of ultracool dwarf companions with separations larger than 1000 au, providing excellent targets for future atmospheric retrievals.

A complete accounting of nearby objects—from the highest-mass white dwarf progenitors down to low-mass brown dwarfs—is now possible, thanks to an almost complete set of trigonometric parallax determinations from Gaia, ground-based surveys, and Spitzer follow-up. We create a census of objects within a Sun-centered sphere of 20 pc radius and check published literature to decompose each binary or higher-order system into its separate components. The result is a volume-limited census of ∼3600 individual star formation products useful in measuring the initial mass function across the stellar (

The James Webb Space Telescope is revealing a new population of dust-reddened broad-line active galactic nuclei (AGN) at redshifts z ≳ 5. Here we present deep NIRSpec/Prism spectroscopy from the Cycle 1 Treasury program Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) of 15 AGN candidates selected to be compact, with red continua in the rest-frame optical but with blue slopes in the UV. From NIRCam photometry alone, they could have been dominated by dusty star formation or an AGN. Here we show that the majority of the compact red sources in UNCOVER are dust-reddened AGN: 60% show definitive evidence for broad-line H α with a FWHM > 2000 km s ^−1 , 20% of the current data are inconclusive, and 20% are brown dwarf stars. We propose an updated photometric criterion to select red z > 5 AGN that excludes brown dwarfs and is expected to yield >80% AGN. Remarkably, among all z _phot > 5 galaxies with F277W – F444W > 1 in UNCOVER at least 33% are AGN regardless of compactness, climbing to at least 80% AGN for sources with F277W – F444W > 1.6. The confirmed AGN have black hole masses of 10 ^7 –10 ^9 M _⊙ . While their UV luminosities (−16 > M _UV > −20 AB mag) are low compared to UV-selected AGN at these epochs, consistent with percent-level scattered AGN light or low levels of unobscured star formation, the inferred bolometric luminosities are typical of 10 ^7 –10 ^9 M _⊙ black holes radiating at ∼10%–40% the Eddington limit. The number densities are surprisingly high at ∼10 ^−5 Mpc ^−3 mag ^−1 , 100 times more common than the faintest UV-selected quasars, while accounting for ∼1% of the UV-selected galaxies. While their UV faintness suggests they may not contribute strongly to reionization, their ubiquity poses challenges to models of black hole growth.

We report JWST/NIRSpec spectra of three distant T-type brown dwarfs identified in the Ultradeep NIRSpec and NIRCam ObserVations before the Epoch of Reionization (UNCOVER) survey of the Abell 2744 lensing field. One source was previously reported as a candidate T dwarf on the basis of NIRCam photometry, while two sources were initially identified as candidate active galactic nuclei. Low-resolution 1–5 μ m spectra confirm the presence of molecular features consistent with T dwarf atmospheres, and comparison to spectral standards infers classifications of sdT1, T6, and T8–T9. The warmest source, UNCOVER-BD-1, shows evidence of subsolar metallicity, and atmosphere model fits indicate T _eff = 1300 K and [M/H] ∼ −1.0, making this one of the few spectroscopically confirmed T subdwarfs known. The coldest source, UNCOVER-BD-3, is near the T/Y dwarf boundary with T _eff = 550 K, and our analysis indicates the presence of PH _3 in the 3–5 μ m region, favored over CO _2 and a possible indicator of subsolar metallicity. We estimate distances of 0.9–4.5 kpc from the Galactic midplane, making these the most distant brown dwarfs with spectroscopic confirmation. Population simulations indicate high probabilities of membership in the Galactic thick disk for two of these brown dwarfs, and potential halo membership for UNCOVER-BD-1. Our simulations indicate that there are approximately 5 T dwarfs and 1–2 L dwarfs in the Abell 2744 field down to F444W = 30 AB mag, roughly one-third of which are thick disk members. These results highlight the utility of deep JWST/NIRSpec spectroscopy for identifying and characterizing the oldest metal-poor brown dwarfs in the Milky Way.

Stellar streams form through the tidal disruption of satellite galaxies or globular clusters orbiting a host galaxy. Globular cluster streams are exciting since they are thin (dynamically cold) and therefore sensitive to perturbations from low-mass subhalos. Since the subhalo mass function differs depending on the dark matter composition, these gaps can provide unique constraints on dark matter models. However, current samples are limited to the Milky Way. With its large field of view, deep imaging sensitivity, and high angular resolution, the upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope (Roman) presents a unique opportunity to increase the number of observed streams and gaps significantly. This paper presents a first exploration of the prospects for detecting gaps in streams in M31 and other nearby galaxies with resolved stars. We simulate the formation of gaps in a Palomar 5–like stream and generate mock observations of these gaps with background stars in M31 and foreground Milky Way stellar fields. We assess Roman's ability to detect gaps out to 10 Mpc through visual inspection and with the gap-finding tool FindTheGap . We conclude that gaps of ≈1.5 kpc in streams that are created from subhalos of masses ≥5 × 10 ^6 M _⊙ are detectable within a 2–3 Mpc volume in exposure times of 1000 s to 1 hr. This volume contains ≈150 galaxies, including ≈eight galaxies with luminosities >10 ^9 L _⊙ . Large samples of stream gaps in external galaxies will open up a new era of statistical analyses of gap characteristics in stellar streams and help constrain dark matter models.

Despite their shared origin, members of globular clusters display star-to-star variations in composition. The observed pattern of element abundances is unique to these stellar environments and cannot be fully explained by any proposed mechanism. It remains unclear whether stars form with chemical heterogeneity or inherit it from interactions with other members. These scenarios may be differentiated by the dependence of chemical spread on stellar mass; however, obtaining a sufficiently large mass baseline requires abundance measurements on the lower main sequence, which is too faint for spectroscopy even in the nearest globular clusters. We developed a stellar modeling method to obtain precise chemical abundances for stars near the end of the main sequence from multiband photometry, and we applied it to the globular cluster 47 Tucanae. The computational efficiency is attained by matching chemical elements to the model components that are most sensitive to their abundance. We determined [O/Fe] for ∼5000 members below the main-sequence knee at the level of accuracy, comparable to the spectroscopic measurements of evolved members in the literature. The inferred distribution disfavors stellar interactions as the origin of chemical spread; however, an accurate theory of accretion is required to draw a more definitive conclusion. We anticipate that future observations of 47 Tucanae with the James Webb Space Telescope will extend the mass baseline of our analysis into the substellar regime. Therefore, we present predicted color–magnitude diagrams and mass–magnitude relations for the brown dwarf members of 47 Tucanae.

We present six epochs of optical spectropolarimetry of the Type II supernova (SN) 2023ixf ranging from ∼2 to 15 days after the explosion. Polarimetry was obtained with the Kast double spectrograph on the Shane 3 m telescope at Lick Observatory, representing the earliest such observations ever captured for an SN. We observe a high continuum polarization p _cont ≈ 1% on days +1.4 and +2.5 before dropping to 0.5% on day +3.5, persisting at that level up to day +14.5. Remarkably, this change coincides temporally with the disappearance of highly ionized “flash” features. The decrease of the continuum polarization is accompanied by a ∼70° rotation of the polarization position angle (PA) as seen across the continuum. The early evolution of the polarization may indicate different geometric configurations of the electron-scattering atmosphere as seen before and after the disappearance of the emission lines associated with highly ionized species (e.g., He ii , C iv , and N iii ), which are likely produced by elevated mass loss shortly prior to the SN explosion. We interpret the rapid change of polarization and PA from days +2.5 to +4.5 as the time when the SN ejecta emerge from the dense asymmetric circumstellar material (CSM). The temporal evolution of the continuum polarization and the PA is consistent with an aspherical SN explosion that exhibits a distinct geometry compared to the CSM. The rapid follow-up spectropolarimetry of SN 2023ixf during the shock ionization phase reveals an exceptionally asymmetric mass-loss process leading up to the explosion.

We report the discovery of the first brown dwarf binary system with a Y dwarf primary, WISE J033605.05−014350.4, observed with NIRCam on JWST with the F150W and F480M filters. We employed an empirical point-spread function binary model to identify the companion, located at a projected separation of 0.″084, position angle of 295°, and with contrasts of 2.8 and 1.8 mag in F150W and F480M, respectively. At a distance of 10 pc based on its Spitzer parallax, and assuming a random inclination distribution, the physical separation is approximately 1 au. Evolutionary models predict for that an age of 1–5 Gyr, the companion mass is about 4–12.5 Jupiter masses around the 7.5–20 Jupiter mass primary, corresponding to a companion-to-host mass fraction of q = 0.61 ± 0.05. Under the assumption of a Keplerian orbit the period for this extreme binary is in the range of 5–9 yr. The system joins a small but growing sample of ultracool dwarf binaries with effective temperatures of a few hundreds of Kelvin. Brown dwarf binaries lie at the nexus of importance for understanding the formation mechanisms of these elusive objects, as they allow us to investigate whether the companions formed as stars or as planets in a disk around the primary.

We report the detection of large-amplitude, rapid radial velocity (RV) variations and line-splitting in high-resolution Keck/NIRSPEC spectra of the M9 dwarf LP 413-53. We attribute these features to binary motion. Analyzing data spanning 15 yr, we infer a preliminary orbital period of 0.7106156 ± 0.0000002 days, an eccentricity of 0.0088 ± 0.0017, a primary RV semiamplitude of 23.70 ± 0.05 km s ^−1 , and a secondary RV semiamplitude of 28.41 ± 0.06 km s ^−1 , implying a system mass ratio M _secondary / M _primary = 0.8340 ± 0.0017. These measurements identify LP 413-53 as the shortest-period ultracool binary discovered to date, and one of the smallest separation main-sequence binaries known. The position and velocity of the system rule out previously reported membership in the Hyades Moving Group, and indicate that this is likely a pair of evolved (age ≳1 Gyr), very-low-mass stars. Assuming masses consistent with evolved late-M and L dwarfs, we estimate an orbital separation of 0.0081–0.0084 au or 17–19 stellar radii, and an orbital inclination angle of 24°, making it unlikely that this system exhibits eclipse events. The larger radii of these stars at young ages would have put them near contact at the system’s current separation, and we speculate that this system has undergone dynamical evolution, either through orbital angular momentum loss or ejection of a third component followed by tidal circularization. While further observations are needed to fully constrain the orbital and physical parameters of LP 413-53, this ultra-short-period ultracool dwarf binary system serves as a new test bed for formation and dynamical evolution models of very-low-mass multiples.

We present the discovery of CWISE J050626.96+073842.4 (CWISE J0506+0738), an L/T transition dwarf with extremely red near-infrared colors discovered through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 citizen science project. Photometry from UKIRT and CatWISE give a ( J − K ) _MKO color of 2.97 ± 0.03 mag and a J _MKO − W2 color of 4.93 ± 0.02 mag, making CWISE J0506+0738 the reddest known free-floating L/T dwarf in both colors. We confirm the extremely red nature of CWISE J0506+0738 using Keck/NIRES near-infrared spectroscopy and establish that it is a low-gravity, late-type L/T transition dwarf. The spectrum of CWISE J0506+0738 shows possible signatures of CH _4 absorption in its atmosphere, suggesting a colder effective temperature than other known, young, red L dwarfs. We assign a preliminary spectral type for this source of L8 γ –T0 γ . We tentatively find that CWISE J0506+0738 is variable at 3–5 μ m based on multiepoch WISE photometry. Proper motions derived from follow-up UKIRT observations combined with a radial velocity from our Keck/NIRES spectrum and a photometric distance estimate indicate a strong membership probability in the β Pic moving group. A future parallax measurement will help to establish a more definitive moving group membership for this unusual object.

We present the serendipitous discovery of a late T-type brown dwarf candidate in JWST NIRCam observations of the Early Release Science Abell 2744 parallel field. The discovery was enabled by the sensitivity of JWST at 4 μ m wavelengths and the panchromatic 0.9–4.5 μ m coverage of the spectral energy distribution. The unresolved point source has magnitudes F115W = 27.95 ± 0.15 and F444W = 25.84 ± 0.01 (AB), and its F115W−F444W and F356W−F444W colors match those expected for other known T dwarfs. We can exclude it as a reddened background star, high redshift quasar, or a very high redshift galaxy. Comparison with stellar atmospheric models indicates a temperature of T _eff ≈ 650 K and surface gravity $\mathrm{log}g\approx 5.25$ , implying a mass of 0.03 M _⊙ and age of 5 Gyr. We estimate the distance of this candidate to be 570–720 pc in a direction perpendicular to the Galactic plane, making it a likely thick disk or halo brown dwarf. These observations underscore the power of JWST to probe the very low-mass end of the substellar mass function in the Galactic thick disk and halo.

Synthesizing academic literature into new knowledge through writing is a core skill that doctoral students engaged in research must learn. However, developing efficacy in synthesis skills as an academic writer is a culturally and cognitively demanding process that occurs over many years, requires abstraction, and draws upon critical reading skills. Doctoral reading is an invisible part of training, despite large reading loads in doctoral coursework. Further, reading, writing, and researching skills are co-constructed at the doctoral level as previously described by Kwan (2008). The purpose of this essay is to describe how the primary author used her experience as an EdD student, science teacher, and writer to develop a method that addresses doctoral reading challenges. The novel method described here combines categorical reading strategies with social collaborative annotation (SCA). This method centers on active, categorial reading to deconstruct arguments in the primary literature by identifying claim, evidence, reasoning, implications, and context (CERIC), which can serve as a critical reading pedagogy in existing courses, reading clubs, and seminars. Combining CERIC with SCA tools—ranging from homemade variations of Google Suite to purposeful annotation software, such as Hypothes.is.—can support an efficient doctoral reading process. This essay illustrates several worked examples and explores how this process supports retrieval, engagement, collaboration, inclusion, and community, particularly in online learning environments. Significant implications of this work are to make hidden reading expectations explicit and transform professor-centered transmission models of learning to student-centered sociocultural models of learning. The essay proposes next steps for testing the approach's effectiveness in online doctoral learning.

We present three new brown dwarf spectral-binary candidates: CWISE J072708.09−360729.2, CWISE J103604.84−514424.4, and CWISE J134446.62−732053.9, discovered by citizen scientists through the Backyard Worlds: Planet 9 project. Follow-up near-infrared spectroscopy shows that each of these objects is poorly fit by a single near-infrared standard. We constructed binary templates and found significantly better fits, with component types of L7+T4 for CWISE J072708.09−360729.2, L7+T4 for CWISE J103604.84−514424.4, and L7+T7 for CWISE J134446.62−732053.9. However, further investigation of available spectroscopic indices for evidence of binarity and large amplitude variability suggests that CWISE J072708.09−360729.2 may instead be a strong variability candidate. Our analysis offers tentative evidence and characterization of these peculiar brown dwarf sources, emphasizing their value as promising targets for future high-resolution imaging or photometric variability studies.

Observations and statistical studies have shown that giant planets are rare around M dwarfs compared with Sun-like stars. The formation mechanism of these extreme systems has remained under debate for decades. With the help of the TESS mission and ground-based follow-up observations, we report the discovery of TOI-4201b, the most massive and densest hot Jupiter around an M dwarf known so far with a radius of 1.22 ± 0.04 R _J and a mass of 2.48 ± 0.09 M _J , about 5 times heavier than most other giant planets around M dwarfs. It also has the highest planet-to-star mass ratio ( q ∼ 4 × 10 ^−3 ) among such systems. The host star is an early M dwarf with a mass of 0.61 ± 0.02 M _⊙ and a radius of 0.63 ± 0.02 R _⊙ . It has significant supersolar iron abundance ([Fe/H] = 0.52 ± 0.08 dex). However, interior structure modeling suggests that its planet TOI-4201b is metal-poor, which challenges the classical core-accretion correlation of stellar−planet metallicity, unless the planet is inflated by additional energy sources. Building on the detection of this planet, we compare the stellar metallicity distribution of four planetary groups: hot/warm Jupiters around G/M dwarfs. We find that hot/warm Jupiters show a similar metallicity dependence around G-type stars. For M-dwarf host stars, the occurrence of hot Jupiters shows a much stronger correlation with iron abundance, while warm Jupiters display a weaker preference, indicating possible different formation histories.

Understanding differences between substellar spectral data and models has proven to be a major challenge, especially for self-consistent model grids that are necessary for a thorough investigation of brown dwarf atmospheres. Using the random forest supervised machine-learning method, we study the information content of 14 previously published model grids of brown dwarfs (from 1997 to 2021). The random forest method allows us to analyze the predictive power of these model grids, as well as interpret data within the framework of Approximate Bayesian Computation. Our curated data set includes three benchmark brown dwarfs (Gl 570D, ϵ Indi Ba, and Bb) as well as a sample of 19 L and T dwarfs; this sample was previously analyzed by Lueber et al. using traditional Bayesian methods (nested sampling). We find that the effective temperature of a brown dwarf can be robustly predicted independent of the model grid chosen for the interpretation. However, inference of the surface gravity is model-dependent. Specifically, the BT-Settl , Sonora Bobcat , and Sonora Cholla model grids tend to predict $\mathrm{log}g\sim 3$ –4 (cgs units) even after data blueward of 1.2 μ m have been disregarded to mitigate for our incomplete knowledge of the shapes of alkali lines. Two major, longstanding challenges associated with understanding the influence of clouds in brown dwarf atmospheres remain: our inability to model them from first principles and also to robustly validate these models.

Population III stars were the first stars to form after the Big Bang and are believed to have made the earliest contribution to the metal content of the universe beyond the products of the Big Bang nucleosynthesis. These stars are theorized to have had extremely short life spans and therefore would only be observable at high redshifts ( z ≥ 3–17) and faint apparent magnitudes ( m _AB ≳ 40). The direct detection of Population III stars therefore remains elusive. However, the recently launched James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) may be capable of detecting stars in the relevant magnitude range in the event of favorable gravitational lensing. Theoretical models are required to interpret these future observations. In this study, new evolutionary models and nonequilibrium model atmospheres were used to characterize the observable properties of zero-age main-sequence Population III stars. The calculated models cover a wide range of possible Population III stellar masses, from the minimum mass predicted by star formation studies to the maximum mass capable of maintaining hydrostatic equilibrium. Synthetic photometry and theoretical color–magnitude diagrams were calculated for the bands of the Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam) on the JWST. The final results are compared to the scales of known lensing events and JWST magnitude limits. The purpose of this study is to calculate the observable parameters of Population III stars in the most optimal JWST bands in order to provide a theoretical foundation for anticipated future observations of this stellar population.
