Transitional millisecond pulsars (tMSPs) are neutron-star systems that alternate between a rotation-powered radio millisecond pulsar state and an accretion-disk-dominated low-mass X-ray binary (LMXB)-like state on multi-year timescales. During the LMXB-like state, the X-ray emission from tMSPs switches between "low" and "high" X-ray brightness modes on a timescale of seconds to minutes (or longer), while the radio emission shows variability on timescales of roughly minutes. Coordinated VLA and Chandra observations of the nearby tMSP PSR J1023+0038 uncovered a clear anti-correlation between radio and X-ray luminosities such that the radio emission consistently peaks during the X-ray low modes. In addition, there are sometimes also radio/X-ray flares that show no obvious correlation. In this paper, we present simultaneous radio and X-ray observations of a promising tMSP candidate system, 3FGL J1544.6-1125, which shows optical, gamma-ray, and X-ray phenomena similar to PSR J1023+0038, but which is challenging to study because of its greater distance. Using simultaneous VLA and Chandra observations we find that the radio and X-ray emission are consistent with being anti-correlated in a manner similar to PSR J1023+0038. We discuss how our results help in understanding the origin of bright radio emission from tMSPs. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are transient radio signals of extragalactic origins that are subjected to propagation effects such as dispersion and scattering. It follows then that these signals hold information regarding the medium they have traversed and are hence useful as cosmological probes of the Universe. Recently, FRBs were used to make an independent measure of the Hubble Constant $H_0$, promising to resolve the Hubble tension given a sufficient number of detected FRBs. Such cosmological studies are dependent on FRB population statistics, cosmological parameters and detection biases, and thus it is important to accurately characterise each of these. In this work, we empirically characterise the sensitivity of the Fast Real-time Engine for Dedispersing Amplitudes (FREDDA) which is the current detection system for the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP). We coherently redisperse high-time resolution data of 13 ASKAP-detected FRBs and inject them into FREDDA to determine the recovered signal-to-noise ratios as a function of dispersion measure (DM). We find that for 11 of the 13 FRBs, these results are consistent with injecting idealised pulses. Approximating this sensitivity function with theoretical predictions results in a systematic error of 0.3$\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}\,$Mpc$^{-1}$ on $H_0$ when it is the only free parameter. Allowing additional parameters to vary could increase this systematic by up to $\sim1\,$km$\,$s$^{-1}\,$Mpc$^{-1}$. Fast radio burst (FRB) science primarily revolves around two facets: the origin of these bursts and their use in cosmological studies. This work follows from previous redshift-dispersion measure ($z$-DM) analyses in which we model instrumental biases and simultaneously fit population parameters and cosmological parameters to the observed population of FRBs. This sheds light on both the progenitors of FRBs and cosmological questions. Previously, we have completed similar analyses with data from the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) and the Murriyang (Parkes) Multibeam system. With this manuscript, we additionally incorporate data from the Deep Synoptic Array (DSA) and the Five-hundred-meter Aperture Spherical Telescope (FAST), invoke a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) sampler and implement uncertainty in the Galactic DM contributions. The latter leads to larger uncertainties in derived model parameters than previous estimates despite the additional data. We provide refined constraints on FRB population parameters and derive a new constraint on the minimum FRB energy of log$\,E_{\mathrm{min}}$(erg)=39.49$^{+0.39}_{-1.48}$ which is significantly higher than bursts detected from strong repeaters. This result may indicate a low-energy turnover in the luminosity function or may suggest that strong repeaters have a different luminosity function to single bursts. Precise millisecond pulsar (MSP) positions determined with very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) hold the key to building the connection between the kinematic and dynamic reference frames respectively used by VLBI and pulsar timing. The frame connection would provide an important pathway to examining the planetary ephemerides used in pulsar timing, and potentially enhancing the sensitivities of pulsar timing arrays used to detect stochastic gravitational-wave background at nano-Hz regime. We aim at significantly improving the VLBI-based MSP position from its current $\gtrsim1\,$mas precision level by reducing the two dominant components in the positional uncertainty -- the propagation-related uncertainty and the uncertainty resulting from the frequency-dependent core shifts of the reference sources. We introduce a new differential astrometry strategy of using multiple calibrators observed at several widely separated frequencies, which we call PINPT (Phase-screen Interpolation plus frequeNcy-dePendent core shifT correction; read as "pinpoint") for brevity. The strategy allows determination of the core-shift and mitigates the impact of residual delay in the atmosphere. We implemented the strategy on PSR J2222-0137, an MSP well constrained astrometrically with VLBI and pulsar timing. Using the PINPT strategy, we determined core shifts for 4 AGNs around PSR J2222-0137, and derived a VLBI-based pulsar position with uncertainty of 0.17 mas and 0.32 mas in right ascension and declination, respectively, approaching the uncertainty level of the best-determined timing-based MSP positions. Quantum sensors represent a new generation of sensors with improved precision, accuracy, stability, and robustness to environmental effects compared to their classical predecessors. After decades of laboratory development, several types of quantum sensors are now commercially available or are part-way through the commercialization process. This article provides a brief description of the operation of a selection of quantum sensors that employ the principles of atom-light interactions and discusses progress toward packaging those sensors into products. Fast radio bursts (FRBs) are brilliant short-duration flashes of radio emission originating at cosmological distances. The vast diversity in the properties of currently known FRBs, and the fleeting nature of these events make it difficult to understand their progenitors and emission mechanism(s). Here we report high time resolution polarization properties of FRB 20210912A, a highly energetic event detected by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) in the Commensal Real-time ASKAP Fast Transients (CRAFT) survey, which show intra-burst PA variation similar to Galactic pulsars and unusual variation of Faraday Rotation Measure (RM) across its two sub-bursts. The observed intra-burst PA variation and apparent RM variation pattern in FRB 20210912A may be explained by a rapidly-spinning neutron star origin, with rest-frame spin periods of ~1.1 ms. This rotation timescale is comparable to the shortest known rotation period of a pulsar, and close to the shortest possible rotation period of a neutron star. Curiously, FRB 20210912A exhibits a remarkable resemblance with the previously reported FRB 20181112A, including similar rest-frame emission timescales and polarization profiles. In addition to being the most magnetic objects in the known universe, magnetars are the only objects observed to generate fast-radio-burst-like emissions. The formation mechanism of magnetars is still highly debated, and may potentially be probed with the magnetar velocity distribution. We carried out a 3-year-long astrometric campaign on Swift J1818.0-1607 -- the fastest-spinning magnetar, using the Very Long Baseline Array. After applying the phase-calibrating 1D interpolation strategy, we obtained a small proper motion of 8.5 $\mathrm{mas~yr^{-1}}$ magnitude, and a parallax of $0.12\pm0.02$ mas (uncertainties at $1\,\sigma$ confidence throughout the Letter) for Swift J1818.0-1607. The latter is the second magnetar parallax, and is among the smallest neutron star parallaxes ever determined. From the parallax, we derived the distance $9.4^{+2.0}_{-1.6}$ kpc, which locates Swift J1818.0-1607 at the far side of the Galactic central region. Combined with the distance, the small proper motion leads to a transverse peculiar velocity $v_\perp=48^{+50}_{-16}$ $\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ -- a new lower limit to magnetar $v_\perp$. Incorporating previous $v_\perp$ estimates of seven other magnetars, we acquired $v_\perp=149^{+132}_{-68}$ $\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$ for the sample of astrometrically studied magnetars, corresponding to the three-dimensional space velocity $\sim190^{+168}_{-87}$ $\mathrm{km~s^{-1}}$, smaller than the average level of young pulsars. Additionally, we found that the magnetar velocity sample does not follow the unimodal young pulsar velocity distribution reported by Hobbs et al. at $>2\,\sigma$ confidence, while loosely agreeing with more recent bimodal young pulsar velocity distributions derived from relatively small samples of quality astrometric determinations., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 4 tables, accepted for publication in ApJL

PSR J0837-2454 is a young 629 ms radio pulsar whose uncertain distance has important implications. A large distance would place the pulsar far out of the Galactic plane and suggest it is the result of a runaway star, while a short distance would mean the pulsar is extraordinarily cold. Here we present further radio observations and the first deep X-ray observation of PSR J0837-2454. Data from the Parkes Murriyang telescope show flux variations over short and long timescales and also yield an updated timing model, while the position and proper motion (and, less strongly, parallax) of the pulsar are constrained by a number of low-significance detections with the Very Long Baseline Array. XMM-Newton data enable detection of X-ray pulsations for the first time from this pulsar and yield a spectrum that is thermal and blackbody-like, with a cool blackbody temperature ~70 eV or atmosphere temperature ~50 eV, as well as a small hotspot. The spectrum also indicates the pulsar is at a small distance of <~1 kpc, which is compatible with the marginal VLBA parallax constraint that favours a distance of >~330 pc. The low implied luminosity (~7.6x10^31 erg s^-1 at 0.9 kpc) suggests PSR J0837-2454 has a mass high enough that fast neutrino emission from direct Urca reactions operates in this young star and points to a nuclear equation of state that allows for direct Urca reactions at the highest densities present in neutron star cores., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures; published in PASA; style change to better match published version

The mergers of double neutron stars (DNSs) systems are believed to drive the majority of short $\gamma$-ray bursts (SGRBs), while also serving as production sites of heavy r-process elements. Despite being key to i) confirming the nature of the extragalactic SGRBs, ii) addressing the poorly-understood r-process enrichment in the ultra-faint dwarf galaxies (UFDGs), and iii) probing the formation process of DNS systems, the space velocity distribution of DNSs is still poorly constrained due to the small number of DNSs with well-determined astrometry. In this work, we determine new proper motions and parallaxes of two Galactic DNSs -- PSR J0509+3801 and PSR J1930-1852, using the Very Long Baseline Array, and estimate the transverse velocities $v_\perp$ of all the 11 isolated Galactic DNSs having proper motion measurements in a consistent manner. Our correlation analysis reveals that the DNS $v_\perp$ is tentatively correlated with three parameters: spin period, orbital eccentricity, and companion mass. With the preliminary $v_\perp$ distribution, we obtain the following findings. Firstly, the refined $v_\perp$ distribution is confirmed to agree with the observed displacements of the localized SGRBs from their host galaxy birth sites. Secondly, we estimate that around 11% and 25% of DNSs remain gravitationally bound to UFDGs with escape velocities of 15$\mathrm{~km~s^{-1}}$ and 25$\mathrm{~km~s^{-1}}$, respectively. Hence, the retained DNSs might indeed be responsible for the r-process enrichment confirmed so far in a few UFDGs. After more than a century of concerted effort, physics still lacks basic principles of spontaneous self-organization. To appreciate why, we first state the problem, outline historical approaches, and survey the present state of the physics of self-organization. This frames the particular challenges arising from mathematical intractability and the resulting need for computational approaches, as well as those arising from a chronic failure to define structure. Then, an overview of two modern mathematical formulations of organization -- intrinsic computation and evolution operators -- lays out a way to overcome these challenges. Together, the vantage point they afford shows how to account for the emergence of structured states via a statistical mechanics of systems arbitrarily far from equilibrium. FRB 20220610A is a high-redshift Fast Radio Burst (FRB) that has not been observed to repeat. Here, we present rest-frame UV and optical $\textit{Hubble Space Telescope}$ observations of the field of FRB 20220610A. The imaging reveals seven extended sources, one of which we identify as the most likely host galaxy with a spectroscopic redshift of $z$=1.017. We spectroscopically confirm at least three additional sources to be at the same redshift, and identify the system as a compact galaxy group with possible signs of interaction among group members. We determine the host of FRB 20220610A to be a star-forming galaxy with stellar mass of $\approx10^{9.7}\,M_{\odot}$, mass-weighted age of $\approx2.6$~Gyr, and star formation rate (integrated over the last 100 Myr) of $\approx1.7$~M$_{\odot}$~yr$^{-1}$. These host properties are commensurate with the star-forming field galaxy population at z~1 and trace their properties analogously to the population of low-$z$ FRB hosts. Based on estimates of the total stellar mass of the galaxy group, we calculate a fiducial contribution to the observed Dispersion Measure (DM) from the intragroup medium of $\approx 110-220$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (rest-frame). This leaves a significant excess of $500^{+272}_{-109}$ $\rm pc \, cm^{-3}$ (in the observer frame), with additional sources of DM possibly originating from the circumburst environment, host galaxy interstellar medium, and/or foreground structures along the line of sight. We have created an up-to-date catalogue of 214 brown dwarfs (BDs) in binaries with $P < 10^4$ d. This allows us to examine the population statistics of the brown dwarf desert. We searched $\textit{Gaia}$ DR3 NSS results for orbital inclinations of BD candidates, deriving 12 new masses. Three remain as desert BDs whereas nine candidates are found to be low-mass stars. We improved the RV solutions for three previously studied BD candidates. A further 19 BD masses with periods less than $\sim$ 1200 d were identified in the DR3 $\texttt{binary_masses}$ database. We confirm a valley in the mass distribution with a minimum around 30-35 M$_{\textrm{jup}}$, and find that periods $<$ 100 d are still under-populated in comparison to longer periods. The updated mass and eccentricity distribution of BDs still shows a marginally statistically significant split into high- and low-mass BD populations. This hints at two different parent distributions, and two potential origins $-$ either akin to planetary formation, or stellar. There are no low eccentricity BDs at periods around 100 d. The mass-metallicity distribution of BDs indicates that core accretion is not the dominant formation mechanism for BDs as they do not follow the same trends that giant exoplanets do with metallicity. We identify a diagonal envelope bounding the Gaia BDs in the mass-period plane due to the detection thresholds of the currently available NSS solutions from 34 months of data., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures. While mid-infrared optical frequency combs have been widely utilized in areas such as trace gas sensing, chemical kinetics, and combustion science, the relatively low power per comb tooth has limited acquisition times and sensitivities. We have developed a new approach in which an electro-optic frequency comb is utilized to pump a continuous-wave singly-resonant optical parametric oscillator in order to spectrally translate the comb into the mid-infrared. Through the use of electro-optic combs produced via chirped waveforms we have produced mid-infrared combs containing up to 2400 comb teeth. We show that a comb can be generated on the non-resonant idler when the pump modulation is non-synchronous, and we use these combs to perform high resolution spectroscopy on methane. In addition, we describe the underlying theory of this method and demonstrate that phase matching should allow for combs as broad as several THz to be spectrally translated to the mid-infrared. The high power and mutual coherence as well as the relatively low complexity of this approach should allow for broad application in areas such as chemical dynamics, quantum information, and photochemistry., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

An extensive library of symptom inventories has been developed over time to measure clinical symptoms, but this variety has led to several long standing issues. Most notably, results drawn from different settings and studies are not comparable, which limits reproducibility. Here, we present an artificial intelligence (AI) approach using semantic textual similarity (STS) to link symptoms and scores across previously incongruous symptom inventories. We tested the ability of four pre-trained STS models to screen thousands of symptom description pairs for related content - a challenging task typically requiring expert panels. Models were tasked to predict symptom severity across four different inventories for 6,607 participants drawn from 16 international data sources. The STS approach achieved 74.8% accuracy across five tasks, outperforming other models tested. This work suggests that incorporating contextual, semantic information can assist expert decision-making processes, yielding gains for both general and disease-specific clinical assessment.

FRB 20210912A is a fast radio burst (FRB), detected and localised to sub-arcsecond precision by the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder. No host galaxy has been identified for this burst despite the high precision of its localisation and deep optical and infrared follow-up, to 5-$\sigma$ limits of $R=26.7$ mag and $K_\mathrm{s}=24.9$ mag with the Very Large Telescope. The combination of precise radio localisation and deep optical imaging has almost always resulted in the secure identification of a host galaxy, and this is the first case in which the line-of-sight is not obscured by the Galactic disk. The dispersion measure of this burst, $\mathrm{DM_{FRB}}=1233.696\pm0.006~\mathrm{pc}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, allows for a large source redshift of $z>1$ according to the Macquart relation. It could thus be that the host galaxy is consistent with the known population of FRB hosts, but is too distant to detect in our observations ($z>0.7$ for a host like that of the first repeating FRB source, FRB 20121102A); that it is more nearby with a significant excess in $\mathrm{DM_{host}}$, and thus dimmer than any known FRB host; or, least likely, that the FRB is truly hostless. We consider each possibility, making use of the population of known FRB hosts to frame each scenario. The fact of the missing host has ramifications for the FRB field: even with high-precision localisation and deep follow-up, some FRB hosts may be difficult to detect, with more distant hosts being the less likely to be found. We present high-resolution 1.5 $-$ 6 GHz Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) optical and infrared observations of the extremely active repeating fast radio burst (FRB) FRB 20201124A and its barred spiral host galaxy. We constrain the location and morphology of star formation in the host and search for a persistent radio source (PRS) coincident with FRB 20201124A. We resolve the morphology of the radio emission across all frequency bands and measure a star formation rate SFR $\approx 8.9\,M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$, approximately $\approx 2.5-6$ times larger than optically-inferred SFRs, demonstrating dust-obscured star formation throughout the host. Compared to a sample of all known FRB hosts with radio emission, the host of FRB 20201124A has the most significantly obscured star formation. While HST observations show the FRB to be offset from the bar or spiral arms, the radio emission extends to the FRB location. We propose that the FRB progenitor could have formed in situ (e.g., a magnetar born from a massive star explosion). It is still plausible, although less likely, that the progenitor of FRB 20201124A migrated from the central bar of the host. We further place a limit on the luminosity of a putative PRS at the FRB position of $L_{\rm 6.0 \ GHz}$ $\lesssim$ 1.8 $\times 10^{27}$ erg s$^{-1}$ Hz$^{-1}$, among the deepest PRS luminosity limits to date. Engineering the local density of states with nanophotonic structures is a powerful tool to control light-matter interactions via the Purcell effect. At optical frequencies, control over the electric field density of states is typically used to couple to and manipulate electric dipole transitions. However, it is also possible to engineer the magnetic density of states to control magnetic dipole transitions. In this work, we experimentally demonstrate the optical magnetic Purcell effect using a single rare earth ion coupled to a nanophotonic cavity. We engineer a new single photon emitter, Er$^{3+}$ in MgO, where the electric dipole decay rate is strongly suppressed by the cubic site symmetry, giving rise to a nearly pure magnetic dipole optical transition. This allows the unambiguous determination of a magnetic Purcell factor $P_m=1040 \pm 30$. We further extend this technique to realize a magnetic dipole spin-photon interface, performing optical spin initialization and readout of a single Er$^{3+}$ electron spin. This work demonstrates the fundamental equivalence of electric and magnetic density of states engineering, and provides a new tool for controlling light-matter interactions for a broader class of emitters.

We present a new library of semi-empirical stellar population models that are based on the empirical MILES and semi-empirical sMILES stellar libraries. The models span a large range of age and metallicity, in addition to an [$\alpha$/Fe] coverage from $-$0.2 to $+$0.6 dex, at MILES resolution (FWHM=2.5$ \mathring {\mathrm A}$) and wavelength coverage (3540.5-7409.6$ \mathring {\mathrm A}$). These models are aimed at exploring abundance ratios in the integrated light from stellar populations in star clusters and galaxies. Our approach is to build SSPs from semi-empirical stars at particular [$\alpha$/Fe] values, thus producing new SSPs at a range of [$\alpha$/Fe] values from sub-solar to super-solar. We compare these new SSPs with previously published and well-used models and find similar abundance pattern predictions, but with some differences in age indicators. We illustrate a potential application of our new SSPs, by fitting them to the high signal-to-noise data of stacked SDSS galaxy spectra. Age, metallicity and [$\alpha$/Fe] trends were measured for galaxy stacks with different stellar velocity dispersions and show systematic changes, in agreement with previous analyses of subsets of those data. We use four observations with the European VLBI network to measure the first precise radio parallax of the Crab Pulsar. We found two in-beam extragalactic sources just outside the Crab Nebula, with one bright enough to use as a background reference source in our data. We use the Crab Pulsar's giant pulses to determine fringe and bandpass calibration solutions, which greatly improved the sensitivity and reliability of our images and allowed us to determine precise positional offsets between the pulsar and the background source. From those offsets, we determine a parallax of $\pi=0.53\pm0.06\rm{\;mas}$ and proper motion of $(\mu_{\alpha},\mu_{\delta})=(-11.34\pm0.06,2.65\pm0.14)\rm{\;mas\;yr^{-1}}$, yielding a distance of $d=1.90^{+0.22}_{-0.18}\rm{\;kpc}$ and transverse velocity of $v_{\perp}=104^{+13}_{-11}\rm{\;km\;s^{-1}}$.
