About 20% of the catch of the European fishing fleet is obtained from non-European waters. Access to these waters is often based on agreements with coastal states that allow the EU fleet to fish from surplus stocks in return for financing of infrastructure development in the fisheries sector. These agreements have been criticized, as these fisheries are often poorly regulated and management decisions are sometimes based on limited knowledge, compliance, and enforcement capabilities. It is also too often the case that trust between stakeholders is lacking. The aim of FarFish is to overcome these hurdles. The FarFish project is designed around six case study areas in which the European operators are actively engaged in fishing activities, including Cape Verde, Mauritania, Senegal and Seychelles, as well as the international seas in the southeast and southwest Atlantic. In this context of geographic, economic and cultural diversity, the project will gain insights into the sustainability commercially important species such as tuna, hake, mackerel, sardines, octopus, shrimp, and other relevant fisheries. The project will contribute to the exploitation at or below corresponding Maximum Sustainable Yields (MSY) for these fisheries. FarFish aims to improve sustainability and profitability of the European fishing fleet operating outside European waters. FarFish brings together 21 organisations and agencies across Europe, Africa and South America in addition to a number of international organizations. This plan for the dissemination of knowledge and exploitation of FarFish describes the project partners’ strategies and actions related to the exploitation, dissemination and communication of the project results. The plan will be revised and updated on a continuous basis. The FarFish consortium aims to disseminate and communicate the results and recommendations obtained from the project’s work to all relevant parties, including FarFish partners, stakeholders and the general public. The use of efficient and productive internal and external communication, actions, tools and participative events will ensure that all target groups are reached. This plan describes how the new knowledge and tools created will be exploited and disseminated, and defines a clear set of actions in the project timeline including; purpose, target groups, methods, vehicles, timing, indicators and success criteria.

Visualization materials, and other tools, that can assist operators and other stakeholders in developing Management Plan Recommendations (MPRs), are an important part of each case study in the FarFish project, as well as for the outcome of the project. The visualization tools will give information on important biological, ecological, economic and social issues that can be relevant for the MPR1 development and give information on potential effects of MPR1 implementation (what if? scenarios). For the project to be successful, as with any project of relevance, it is of utter importance to make sure that complex issues and concepts are broken down for additional understanding. This will lay the path for increased stakeholder involvement and will provide additional tools so that the co-creation is successful. It is said that “picture is worth a thousand words”. It is important to remember that sometimes visualization is the only way for successful dissemination of results. The visualization materials and other tools that will be available for the MPR1 development are likely to be "imperfect" given the timing, but will nevertheless provide important input to developing an applicable MPR alternative. The tools are likely to consist mainly of static maps and charts, as well as simple GIS. In this deliverable we list the possible visualization materials that are and can be available within the FarFish project. Both ideas and concrete examples will be listed on the use of visualisation tools for enhanced understanding and better use of the data created within the project., This project has received funding from the European Union's Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement no. 727891.

The FarFish Project website www.farfish.eu is the primary dissemination and communication platform of the project. The site gives project partners, stakeholders and the general public the opportunity to get information on the project and its progress. It also enables for easy linkage to social media. The content on the website is designed to be informative on main tasks in the project and to provide detailed information on the case studies, workshops, meetings and other activities, as well as progress. The website allows for those interested to sign up for a newsletter, which will be published regularly throughout the project lifetime. Once the FFDB (FarFish DataBase) is up-and-running it will be accessible through the webpage. The website does not have an internal / restricted access component, as project partners decided to use Dropbox for sharing and archiving of files and data. Selected stakeholders, reference group members and external advisors have been given access to Dropbox folders specially setup for them. The website was developed by Matís, which is also responsible for its hosting and maintenance. Selected project partners have been given editorial rights to the site. The website is set up in WordPress, which is simple and commonly used platform. The intention of Matís is to keep the page open “indefinitely” after the project end, at own cost, in order to facilitate that the project and its products will live on

This document reports on the developments needed to produce management tools that are relevant for each of the case studies in the FarFish project. The tools have been selected in coordination with the production of Management Plan zero for each case study (D4.1 - MP0 for each case study). It has shared with Work Package 4 the consultation process with partners of FarFish, including the case study leaders, and with external relevant bodies such as ICCAT or IOTC. The selected tools have been incorporated into the Management Plan Zero and have also been coordinated with Work Package 2 to feed through Deliverables 2.3 (Report on biological and ecological data in FFDB pilot version 1) and 2.6 (Report on biological and ecological data in FFDB pilot version 2), and the data these tools will demand. The tools are planned to use the data available from the FarFish database (D6.2 – FFDB pilot version 1, D6.5 – FFDB pilot version 2, D6.9 - FFDB) and to provide results that will be stored in the same database. They incorporate measures to explore better compliance through satellite advances in sensing and communication, models for semi-automatic stock assessment when needed or assessment of the role of the physical environment in creating stock fluctuations.
