5. High-performance planar-type electron source based on a graphene-oxide-semiconductor structure

Abstract

A graphene-oxide-semiconductor (GOS) planar-type electron source was fabricated by direct synthesis of graphene on an oxide layer via low-pressure chemical vapor deposition. It achieved a maximum electron emission efficiency of 32.1% by suppressing the electron inelastic scattering within the topmost gate electrode using a graphene electrode. In addition, an electron emission current density of 100 mA/cm^2 was observed at an electron emission efficiency of 16.2%. The electron energy spread was well fitted to Maxwell-Boltzmann distribution, which indicates that the emitted electrons are the thermally equilibrium state within the electron source. The full-width at half-maximum energy spread of the emitted electrons was approximately 1.1 eV. The electron emission efficiency did not deteriorate after more than 42 h of direct current operation. Thus, the GOS planar-type electron source has the potential to be an excellent electron gun for electron microscopy., This article may be downloaded for personal use only. 7. The prognostic impact of pulmonary metastasectomy in recurrent gynecologic cancers: a retrospective single-institution study

Abstract

The aim was to examine the impact of pulmonary metastasectomy in patients with recurrent gynecologic cancers. Thirty-seven patients with isolated lung metastases (< 3 nodules) in recurrent epithelial gynecologic cancers were treated at Nagoya University Hospital between 1985 and 2013. The clinicopathological data for the 23 patients who underwent surgical resection were retrospectively analyzed, and their survival was compared with patients who received chemotherapy only. The median age at the time of surgery was 56 years (range 28–77). The studied population comprised 7 patients with 2 or 3 nodules and 8 patients with chemoresistant tumors, including fourteen cervical, 4 endometrial, and 5 ovarian primary tumors, with 5-year overall survivals (OSs) after surgery of 61, 100, and 100%, respectively. The survival of recurrence-free interval after initial treatment (>2 years) was significantly favorable (5-year OS 100% vs. 41.7%, p=0.006). Among the 6 patients with re-recurrence of lung metastases, 5 patients underwent a second pulmonary metastasectomy, and all of the patients are currently alive without disease. None of the 29 operations yielded severe complications. Although the survival rate showed a tendency to be higher in the surgery group than in the chemotherapy-only group, no significant difference was observed (5-year OS 81.7% vs. 49.5%, p=0.072). Our results indicate that pulmonary metastasectomy contributed to long-term survival with a low-risk of complications. Surgery to remove isolated lung metastases might provide a favorable prognosis for patients with long recurrence-free intervals and for patients with chemoresistant or re-recurrent tumors.

Abstract

The effects of compatibility of tackifier with polymer matrix and mixing weight ratio of triblock/diblock copolymers as the matrix on the adhesion property and phase structure of tackifier-added polystryrene triblock/diblock copolymer blends were investigated. For this purpose, polystyrene- block-polyisoprene- block-polystyrene triblock and polystyrene- block-polyisoprene diblock copolymers were used and the diblock weight ratio in the blend was varied from 0 to 1. Spherical polystyrene domains with a mean size of about 20 nm were dispersed in the polyisoprene (PI) continuous phase. In the case of the hydrogenated cycloaliphatic resin as tackifier having a good compatibility with PI and a poor compatibility with polystyrene, the peel strength increased with an increase of the tackifier content, and the degree of increase became significant above 40 wt % of tackifier. It was found that the nanometer-sized agglomerates of tackifier in the PI matrix were formed and the distance between the nearest neighbors of agglomerates was about 15 nm from SAXS measurement. The peel strength increased with an increase of the nanometer-sized agglomerates of tackifier from TEM observation. On the other hand, in the case of the rosin phenolic resin as tackifier having a good compatibility with both polystyrene and PI, the peel strength increased effectively at the lower tackifier content, while no significant increase at higher tackifier content was observed. The agglomerates of tackifier were never confirmed in this system. The higher peel strength was obtained at the diblock weight ratio in the blend of 0.5-0.7 for both tackifier-added systems. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
