Safety learning during threat and adversity is critical for behavioral adaptation, resiliency, and survival. Using a novel mouse paradigm involving thermal threat, we recently demonstrated that safety learning is highly susceptible to social isolation stress. Yet, our previous study primarily considered male mice and did not thoroughly scrutinize the relative impacts of stress on potentially distinct defensive mechanisms implemented by males and females during the thermal safety task. The present study assessed these issues while considering a variety of defensive behaviors related to safety-seeking, escape, coping, protection, ambivalence, and risk-taking. After a two-week social isolation stress period, mice were required to explore a box arena that had thermal threat and safety zones (5 vs. 30°C, respectively). Since visuospatial cues clearly differentiated the threat and safety zones, the majority of the no-stress controls (69–75%) in both sexes exhibited optimal memory formation for the safety zone. In contrast, the majority of the stress-exposed mice in both sexes (69–75%) exhibited robust impairment in memory formation for the safety zone. Furthermore, while the control groups exhibited many robust correlations among various defensive behaviors, the stress-exposed mice in both sexes exhibited disorganized behaviors. Thus, stress severely impaired the proper establishment of safety memory and the structure of defensive behavior, effects that primarily occurred in a sex-independent manner.

Pulmonary mucociliary clearance (MCC) is an important defence mechanism of the respiratory system and clears pathogens and foreign particles from the airways. Understanding the effect of disease states, drugs, toxins and airway manipulations on MCC could be beneficial in preventing early pulmonary disease and developing new pulmonary therapeutics. This review summarises the current methods and future efforts to detect pulmonary MCC in vivo.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a significant public health concern in resource-constrained sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Efforts to combat this burden are hampered by the region’s wide variation in reported prevalence. This review aimed to systematically synthesize up-to-date data on PPD in SSA. The review was structured per the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses. Included in the review were studies that reported the prevalence of PPD in SSA. A search was undertaken of PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, and PsycINFO. A random-effect model was fitted to estimate the pooled burden of postpartum depressive symptoms in SSA. We conducted subgroup analyses to estimate the distribution of postpartum depressive symptoms based on important study characteristics: sample size, the timing of diagnosis, design, study setting/region, instrument, and income/ economy. Poor internet infrastructure limits the use of computer-based nursing process forms in rural areas. This study aimed to configure a computer‑based nursing process form to support nursing diagnosis and care evaluation in rural healthcare clinics in Africa. This study utilized a methodological design. The design process utilized a three-stage procedure involving planning, configuration, and testing. Seven faculty members volunteered to participate in the laboratory verification process. Each simulation session lasted 45 min and span from patient admission to exit. The experts independently scored the software functionality dichotomously as Not Suitable (score 0) and Suitable (score 1) for nursing practice. The agreement between the faculty volunteers was 0.857. The configuration of a readily available Microsoft Access computer application to support nursing diagnosis without internet service is possible. Health facilities in rural areas without internet connectivity should resort to such local configurations to maximize the benefits of electronic‑based documentation.

Abstract Aim This study aimed to develop generic quality nursing care indicators for a low‐ and middle‐income country’s quality nursing care measurement through a modified Delphi consensus. Design A three‐round modified Delphi process guided the items' development and acceptance consensus. Methods Twenty‐four academic and clinical nursing experts from different parts of Nigeria participated in the Delphi rounds. In the first round, 96 items (structure – 31, process – 38, and outcome – 27) were distributed to the panellists through e‐mail. The same method guided round 2. In round 3, the panellists reached a consensus on the number and structure of the items. Results In round 1, the initial items were reduced to 75 that met the Delphi consensus. In round 2, the items were modified further and reduced to 74. In round 3, the experts reached a consensus on 70 items (structure – 28, process – 32, and outcome – 10).

Objective: Airway replacement is a challenging surgical intervention and remains an unmet clinical need. Due to the risk of airway stenosis, anastomotic separation, poor vascularization, and necrosis, it is necessary to establish the gold-standard outcomes of tracheal replacement. In this study, we use a large animal autograft model to assess long-term outcomes following tracheal replacement. Methods: Four New Zealand White rabbits underwent tracheal autograft surgery and were observed for 6 months. Clinical and radiographic surveillance were recorded, and grafts were analyzed histologically and radiographically at endpoint. Results: All animals survived to the endpoint with minimal respiratory symptoms and normal growth rates. No complications were observed. Computed tomography scans of the post-surgical airway demonstrated graft patency at all time points. Histological sections showed no sign of stenosis or necrosis with preservation of the native structure of the trachea. Conclusion: We established benchmarks for airway replacement. Our findings suggest that a rabbit model of tracheal autograft with direct reimplantation is feasible and does not result in graft stenosis or airway collapse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this essay, I discuss the art of Missionary Mary Proctor, a contemporary folk artist from Tallahassee, Florida, in the context of the literary aesthetics of the renowned twentieth-century anthropologist and writer Zora Neale Hurston. In comparing these Southern-born African American women artists, I argue that both are rooted in an aesthetic praxis deriving from their shared womanist ethics. My goal in this inquiry is to highlight the faith-based aesthetic traditions of African American women and reveal the manner in which discourses of freedom intertwine with literary and visual aesthetics and faith-based practices in African American folk art and literature. To that end, I analyze the prevalence of themes of liberation within the spiritual discourses of Southern African American women artists such as Missionary Mary Proctor and theorize the manner in which a landscape of Black female liberation is envisioned within their works.

Postpartum depression (PPD) is a common mental health challenge in resource-constrained sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Characterizing its correlates will aid prediction, early detection, and pre-emptive interventions. This review aimed to systematically synthesize and stratify PPD correlates in sub-Saharan Africa. The review was structured as per the Preferred Reporting Item for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. We included studies that reported the correlates of PPD in SSA. We searched PubMed, Medline, CINAHL, Academic Search Complete, and PsycINFO for relevant peer-reviewed literature. The correlates of PPD constituted the primary outcome. A random effect model was fitted to estimate the pooled correlation coefficient per correlate. The clinical relevance of correlates was stratified based on strength of correlation (r) and recurrence (f). The mean age of the participants was 27.0 ± 6.0 years, and 68.6% of participants had completed at least secondary education. The correlates of PPD in SSA were intimate partner violence (IPV) ((risk weight (rw) = 2.8; r = 0.212 (confidence interval (CI): 0.11–0.31), poor social support (PSS) (rw = 1.9; r = 0.250 (0.133–0.361)), unwanted pregnancy (UP) (rw = 1.6; r = 0.279 (CI: 0.14–0.41); I 2 = 95.89), and maternal age (MA) (rw = 0.96; r = 0.27 (CI: 0.154–0.37)), among others. A cumulative risk weight of ⩾0.95 was predictive of PPD and marks the critical point at which preemptive interventions should be instituted. The stratification of risk PPD factors and computation of risk stability index are useful in identifying the clinical significant risk factors. The provision of critical risk point will simplify early detection thus facilitating cost-effectiveness. Of the correlates of PPD in SSA, IPV, PSS, UP, and MA are the most important. Targeted screening and pre-emptive interventions for women with high risk weight may be a reasonable strategy both in the short and long term.

Sealing of surfaces alters the natural hydrological conditions, thereby increasing the urban flood risk. Rainwater management in urban environments has traditionally been performed using conventional urban drainage systems (UDS). However, low impact development (LID) solutions have been recognised in recent decades as effective in controlling runoff. The present work aims to evaluate the efficiency of LID techniques in flood control in a closed basin characterised by high urbanisation for three extreme precipitation events in the city of Natal, Brazil, using 1D/2D modelling. Two techniques were tested, namely bioretention cells (BCs) and rain barrels (RBs) alone or combined. The existing UDS in the area proved unable to control flooding of the basin. Water depths exceeded 0.5 m in all events. The efficiency of the LID solutions evaluated was extremely low, with reductions of less than 1% for highest hazard class. Abstract Heart rate variability (HRV), blood pressure variability (BPV), and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) provide important information on cardiovascular autonomic control. However, little is known about the reorganization of HRV, BPV, and BRS after aerobic exercise. While there is a positive relationship between heart rate (HR) recovery rate and cardiorespiratory fitness, it is unclear whether there is a relationship between cardiorespiratory fitness and reorganization of cardiovascular autonomic modulation during recovery. Thus, this study aimed to investigate whether cardiorespiratory fitness influences the cardiovascular autonomic modulation recovery, after a cardiopulmonary exercise test. Sixty men were assigned into groups according to their cardiorespiratory fitness: low cardiorespiratory fitness (LCF = VO2: 22–38 mL kg−1 min−1), moderate (MCF = VO2: 38–48 mL kg−1 min−1), and high (HCF = VO2 > 48 mL kg−1 min−1). HRV (linear and non-linear analysis) and BPV (spectral analysis), and BRS (sequence method) were performed before and after a cardiopulmonary exercise test. The groups with higher cardiorespiratory fitness had lower baseline HR values and HR recovery time after the cardiopulmonary exercise test. On comparing rest and recovery periods, the spectral analysis of HRV showed a decrease in low-frequency (LF) oscillations in absolute units and high frequency (HF) in absolute and normalized units. It also showed increases in LF oscillations of blood pressure. Nonlinear analysis showed a reduction in approximate entropy (ApEn) and in Poincare Plot parameters (SD1 and SD2), accompanied by increases in detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA) parameters α1 and α2. However, we did not find differences in cardiovascular autonomic modulation parameters and BRS in relation to cardiorespiratory fitness neither before nor after the cardiopulmonary test. We concluded that cardiorespiratory fitness does not affect cardiovascular autonomic modulations after cardiopulmonary exercise test, unlike HR recovery.

Abstract Background Normotensive premenopausal women show a vagal predominance of cardiac autonomic modulation, whereas age-matched men show a predominance of sympathetic modulation. However, some women develop systemic arterial hypertension (SAH) even with preserved ovarian function. Our hypothesis is that these women may have cardiovascular autonomic parameters similar to those of hypertensive men, even when subjected to pharmacological treatment. We aimed to investigate cardiovascular autonomic control and baroreflex sensitivity (BRS) in hypertensive premenopausal women and age-matched men. Methods One hundred volunteers between 18 and 45 years of age were assigned to two groups (50 participants each): a hypertensive group including patients with a history of SAH for at least 6 months (25 men and 25 women), who were under treatment with monotherapy (losartan, 25–50 mg/kg); and a normotensive group (25 men and 25 women). Anthropometric, hemodynamic, metabolic, and autonomic cardiovascular assessments were performed focusing on BRS, autonomic modulation of heart rate variability (HRV), and blood pressure variability (BPV). Results On HRV analysis, women showed higher values of high-frequency (HF) oscillations in absolute and normalized units, lower values ​of low-frequency (LF) in normalized units, and lower LF/HF ratio, as compared with men. When the normotensive and hypertensive groups were compared, hypertensive groups showed lower values ​of total variance and of LF and HF bands in absolute units. On BRS, hypertensive groups showed lower values than the normotensive group. Conclusion Regardless of blood pressure control through pharmacological treatment, hypertensive patients continued to have reduced HRV compared to normotensive, and hypertensive men had more autonomic impairment than hypertensive premenopausal women.

O cenário da pandemia de Covid-19 estimulou a exposição de músicos em lives musicais. Artistas que já se faziam presentes em plataformas de streaming e em mídias sociais digitais buscaram espaço com vistas a superar a exigência de distanciamento social. O artigo observa a intrínseca relação entre o campo da música e os processos de midiatização e propõe-se a examinar como ocorre a inserção da música regional gaúcha em algumas das transmissões de maior audiência no período no streaming. Analisa-se especificamente o fenômeno de uma canção reconhecida como pertencente a uma identidade específica, a partir da relação entre letra, sonoridade e ritmo, e sua divulgação a partir de memes para audiências desterritorializadas. Constata-se que, a partir do linguajar de zombaria em temas já tratados pela narrativa mítica, a vertente musical galponeira assumida na canção manifesta o desprezo por formas cultas e críticas de expressão musical, e conquista por via midiatizada tanto audiências regionais como nichos regionalistas nacionais. Seu êxito expressa a busca catártica de superação da asfixia social determinada pelo contexto da pandemia.

Introduction: Aspilia africana is a plant commonly used to stop bleeding, heal wound, and manage various stomach complaints. This study aimed at evaluating the impact of aqueous and ethanol leaf extracts of A. africana on biochemical (liver function tests, renal function tests, and lipid profile), histopathological (kidney and liver) and haematological parameters of the female Wistar rats. Methods: To study acute toxicity, the median lethal dose (LD50) was determined by oral administration of different doses of the extract to 8 groups of 3 rats each and the animals were observed for 24 hours for signs of toxicity. To evaluate the toxicological effect of the extract, 3 groups of 5 animals each received 0.5 mL normal saline (control), 250 or 500 mg/kg of the extracts for 2 consecutive weeks. Results: Data revealed the LD50 of the extract to be >5000 mg/kg.bw. We found high awareness about the risk of Zika virus infection during pregnancy and about advisories to avoid travel to affected areas but moderate levels of discussions with healthcare providers.
