1. Non-parametric Monitoring of Spatial Dependence

Abstract

In process monitoring applications, measurements are often taken regularly or randomly from different spatial locations in two or three dimensions. Here, we consider streams of regular, rectangular data sets and use spatial ordinal patterns (SOPs) as a non-parametric approach to detect spatial dependencies. A key feature of our proposed SOP charts is that they are distribution-free and do not require prior Phase-I analysis. We conduct an extensive simulation study, demonstrating the superiority and effectiveness of the proposed charts compared to traditional parametric approaches. We apply the SOP-based control charts to detect heavy rainfall in Germany, war-related fires in (eastern) Ukraine, and manufacturing defects in textile production. 2. Forecasting Macroeconomic Tail Risk in Real Time: Do Textual Data Add Value?

Abstract

We examine the incremental value of news-based data relative to the FRED-MD economic indicators for quantile predictions of employment, output, inflation and consumer sentiment in a high-dimensional setting. Our results suggest that news data contain valuable information that is not captured by a large set of economic indicators. We provide empirical evidence that this information can be exploited to improve tail risk predictions. The added value is largest when media coverage and sentiment are combined to compute text-based predictors. Methods that capture quantile-specific non-linearities produce overall superior forecasts relative to methods that feature linear predictive relationships. The results are robust along different modeling choices.

14. Die Bedeutung von Agrarterminmärkten als Absicherungsinstrument für die deutsche Landwirtschaft

Abstract

Die Zielsetzung der Studie besteht darin, durch Anwendung ökonometrischer Verfahren und Durchführung einer Primärerhebung fundierte Erkenntnisse zur Bedeutung von Agrarterminmärkten für Preisbildungsmechanismen auf deutschen Kassamärkten und Informationen zur Nutzung von Terminkontrakten in der deutschen Landwirt zu bekommen. Liefern beide konzeptionell unterschiedlichen Techniken widerspruchsfreie Ergebnisse, ist stichhaltige Evidenz zum Untersuchungsgegenstand gefunden und indirekte regulatorische Schlussfolgerungen ableitbar. Die empirische Untersuchung zum Zusammenhang von deutschen Agrarrohstoffkassa- und Agrarfuturespreisen basiert auf wöchentlichen Daten für die Periode von 1999 bis 2012. Untersucht werden die Agrarrohstoffe Mais, Raps und Weizen. Die empirischen Resultate verdeutlichen die zentrale Rolle des Futuresmarkts für die deutschen Kassapreise der drei Agrarrohstoffe. Die Ergebnisse sind zwar nicht vollständig widerspruchsfrei, deuten aber in ihrer Gesamtheit auf die dominante Verarbeitung neuer Informationen im Matif Futuresmarkt und einer zeitlich verzögerten Anpassung der Kassamärkte deutscher Agrarrohstoffe hin. Die Widerspruchsfreiheit der empirischen Ergebnisse ist vor dem Hintergrund der Datenqualität nicht zu erwarten. Der Zusammenhang zwischen der Futurespreisentwicklung der Börsen in Europa und den USA wird auf der Grundlage von Tagesdaten von 1999 bis 2013 analysiert. Zusammenfassend lassen die empirischen Ergebnisse auf einen direkten Einfluss US-amerikanischer auf europäische Agrarrohstofffuturespreise erkennen. In die umgekehrte Richtung ist die Transmission von Informationen als indirekt klassifizierbar. Informationen US-amerikanischer Futuresbörsen spielen somit eine wesentliche Rolle für die Preisbildung in Europa. Da Matif Futurespreise Informationen für Preisbildungsprozesse deutscher Agrarrohstoffkassapreise enthalten, spielen auch US-amerikanische Preisvorgaben für deutsche Kassapreise eine Rolle.

Abstract

ABSTRACT North American and European agricultural futures markets faced significant changes in recent years, i.e., the financialization which originated in the USA, the increase of futures trading in Europe and the recent price turmoils in international commodity markets. We analyse the long- and short-run dynamics between North American and European agricultural futures prices during these institutional changes. The empirical results show that the US markets lead in terms of price transmissions and volatility spillovers. US markets, however, predominantly react to deviations from the long-run equilibrium which indicates a rising impact of European agricultural markets on a global scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

It is still an unanswered question how much trading activity is needed for efficient price discovery in commodity futures markets. For this purpose, we investigate the price discovery process of two thinly traded agricultural futures contracts traded at the European Exchange in Frankfurt. Our empirical results show that the trading volume threshold which is necessary to facilitate efficient price discovery is very low. As our findings are based on constant and time-varying vector error correction models, we also show that neglecting time-variation in the parameters can lead to misleading results. © 2015 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
