The medical books that CHENG Dan ' an once studied and collected are the significant physical evidence of his educational experiences of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture. Some of these books are stored in Jiangsu Museum of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Through systematic collation, it is found that the collection of books is closely related to his experiences in education, teaching and medicine communication. Aimed to the research and education, these books serve for the clinical effects of acupuncture, cover the knowledge in both Chinese and western medicine. CHENG Dan ' an 's collection of books is of diversity and global. It reflects that CHENG Dan ' an emphasizes the classics, places the the equal importance on Chinese and western medicine and assimilates new knowledge of the philosophy on traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture education. It enriches the biographical information of CHENG Dan ' an and has great significance for the today's education of traditional Chinese medicine acupuncture by learning from the past.

The paper explores the thoughts and manipulations of tuina at "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" for the treatment of acute pharyngitis based on "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" in Huangdi Neijing (Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic). "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions" refer to the special acupoints of yang meridians, mostly located at the neck region. It is the "window" of the head and neck, acting on dispersing wind and regulating qi and blood by opening the "window". Acute pharyngitis is caused by the invasion of exogenous wind and heat to the throat or by re-attack of exogenous factors and heat accumulation in the lung and stomach. Pathogenic wind and heat is the chief causative factor. Based on the theory and location of "Tianyou (TE 16) and five regions", the manipulations of tuina , i.e. point-pressing, plucking and smoothing, are operated to open " huyou " (door and window) of the head and face, combined by bleeding at the ear apex so that the path is opened for pathogen elimination. As a result, the pathogenic wind and heat are dispelled, qi movement is promoted and the throat is benefited.

Objectives: To sum up clinical researches and the rule of acupoint selection on the treatment of psoriasis by acupuncture and moxibustion in the past 20 years, so as to provide new ideas and reference for improving the clinical effect of acupuncture for psoriasis., Methods: Research papers, published from January 1, 2002 to December 31, 2022 in both Chinese and English, were searched from databases of China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Wanfang Data Knowledge Service Platform (WanFang), and Chinese Science and Technology Journal (CSTJ), PubMed, Embase and Web of Science by using key words of psoriasis, psoriases, psoriasis vulgaris, acupuncture, needle, acupoint and moxibustion. Then, Microsoft Excel 2021 was used for data entry, extraction and sorting of the included literature, data extraction mainly includes diagnostic criteria, treatment methods, treatment frequency, total course of treatment, selection of acupoints, efficacy evaluation and outcomes. SPSS Modeler 18.1 software was used to make analysis on the association rules of acupoints., Results: A total of 26 papers were included, and the diagnostic criteria of clinical studies on acupuncture treatment of psoriasis are constantly updated. Of the 26 clinical studies, 23 had both treatment group and control group, 21 were randomized controlled trials. The main methods for treatment of psoriasis included fire needle, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, acupuncture combined with moxibustion or fire needle, fire needle plus western medicines, etc. with the acupuncture combined with moxibustion, and fire needle combined with western medicines being most frequently used. The observation index and clinical efficacy evaluation were effective rate, psoriasis area and severity index, dermatology life quality index, Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome score, etc., with the effective rate being about 40% to 100%. Comparison of clinical efficacy of acupuncture in treating psoriasis showed that the simple fire needle, simple acupuncture, acupuncture combined with moxibustion, fire needle or acupuncture combined with western medicines were superior to simple western medicines, etc. In regard to acupoint selection, a total of 35 acupoints were found in the 26 studies included, among which the top 5 frequently used were Ashi points (skin lesion region), Geshu (BL17), Feishu (BL13), Ganshu (BL18) and Quchi (LI11), and there were strong association rules among BL17, BL13, BL18 and Shenshu (BL23)., Conclusions: Acupuncture is safe and effective in the treatment of psoriasis, and acupuncture combined with moxibustion and fire acupuncture needle combined with western medicines are recommended as the main intervention method, with Ashi-point, BL13, BL17, BL18 and BL23 as the main acupoints.

Ancient acupuncture medical cases not only possess historical literary value but also hold significant clinical importance. To enhance the utilization of ancient acupuncture medical cases and to guide the excavation of acupuncture theory and its clinical application, this study constructs an indexing template for "Ancient Acupuncture Medical Cases" based on the knowledge element theory and the fine-grained indexing requirements of ancient acupuncture texts. This template includes two levels, 7 categories, 28 knowledge element data, 31 semantic types, and 15 semantic relationships. These element data construct the interconnections of knowledge in ancient acupuncture medical cases, serving as a basis for fine-grained indexing of acupuncture medical case literature.

The semi-structured interview was adopted to in-depth interview Professor SUN Shentian , a Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine, on the integration and development of acupuncture and neurology. In the interview, we traced the first "ward of acupuncture and neurology" in China, established by Professor SUN Shentian and the origin of his proposal, "transcranial repeated needling stimulation therapy", aiming at advancing the development of acupuncture discipline. Professor SUN Shentian explained that the ward of acupuncture and neurology was established under specific historical conditions, on account of the relationship between acupuncture and nerves and the characteristics of the neurological diseases, as well as the personal practical knowledge and his unique clinical experience. In order to specify the point selection of scalp acupuncture and further expound its mechanism, he innovated "transcranial repeated needling stimulation therapy" that is advantageous at preciser operation, clearer theoretic foundation and better therapeutic effect of scalp acupuncture. Professor SUN Shentian pointed out that the deepening development of acupuncture is firmly based on "inheritance, practice and innovation", and constant exploration practice along with inheriting the experience of predecessors to propel the innovation and development of acupuncture and move towards a new historical stage.

The paper summarizes Professor JI Laixi 's academic thought on acupuncture and moxibustion. Professor JI Laixi inherits and carries forward the theory and technical system of Shanxi "new nine needles", deepens its academic connotation, and promotes clinical practice. He advocates the integration of Chinese and western medicine, and the inclusion of multiple disciplines, e.g. acupuncture and moxibustion of Chinese medicine and modern anatomy. He takes the lead in proposing a new approach to the treatment of meridian diseases of limbs, "treating the neck region for the diseases of head, treating the abdominal region for the diseases of the lumbar region, and treating the lumbar region for the disease of knees". He proposes the acupoint prescription being standardized and simplified, explores the system of acupoint prescription and establishes the prescriptions for gastric diseases, intestinal diseases and antihypertension.

The jingjin (sinews/fascia) theory of Huangdi Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor's Inner Classic ) has a profound systematic theoretical structure of the rehabilitation for tendon disease. On the basis of jingjin system, it puts forward the ideological system of acupuncture rehabilitation for tendon disease, in which, " bi " (impediment) is the main syndrome, and "swift insertion of heated needles, the frequency of needling decided by the effects and taking tender sites as acupoints" (referring to diagnosis, acupoint selection and treatment) is the basic principle. It is believed after recognizing the above theory and principle that the tendon disease should be differentiated according to the four seasons and twelve months so as to timely adjust yin and yang . Through analyzing the statement of deviation of the mouth corner (facial paralysis) in Huangdi Neijing , the paper expounds the main symptoms, etiology and pathogenesis, and the effect of treatment for this disease. It is the specific clinical representation of acupuncture rehabilitation ideological system for tendon disease.

Based on Huangdi Neijing ( Yellow Emperor's Internal Classic ), combined with the Huangdi Mingtang Jing JiJiao ( Compilation and Correction of Yellow Emperor's Mingtang Classic ) and unearthed Tianhui Yijian ( Tianhui Medical Bamboo Slips ), it is recognized that the therapeutic indications of Fenglong (ST 40) were recorded repeatedly in many medical works of the Qin and Han dynasties; and the treatments mostly focus on "upward reversion of qi ". In Huangdi Mingtang Jing ( Yellow Emperor's Mingtang Classic ), a part of symptoms were re-described textually, which affects the understanding on the indications of Fenglong (ST 40) in the medical works of the later generations. On the basis of the construction of phlegm theory in the Sui and Tang dynasties, the scholars of Song, Jin and Yuan dynasties had placed the emphasis on the relationship between phlegm and qi movement. In acupuncture works by Dou Hanqing , Fenglong (ST 40) was selected in treatment of phlegm dampness and phlegm-induced asthma, which is also based on the pathogenesis, "upward reversion of qi ", rather than "phlegm" itself. This view can be understood by the proof of "reducing Zusanli (ST 36) for eliminating wind". The relationship between Fenglong (ST 40) and phlegm was emphasized in Yulong Ge ( Jade Dragon Verse ) and Zhenfang Liuji ( Six Sets of Acupuncture Methods ), after which, the understanding, " Fenglong (ST 40), the key point for phlegm disorders", had been formed gradually since the Ming dynasty. The formation and evolution of the therapeutic indications of Fenglong (ST 40) are influenced comprehensively by the errors in textual duplication, cultural background, changes in the term expressions of disorders, and the clinical experience of medical practitioners.

The theory of Huatuo Jiaji (EX-B 2) is the representative of the knowledge construction of ancient anatomy, reflecting the academic thought of Huatuo 's school. Through deeply analyzing the classic theory of acupuncture and its cultural and historical materials, it is believed that the five-body constituents are the structural basis of Huatuo Jiaji (EX-B 2), qi and blood are the material one, while biaoben (the sites where meridian qi gathers and diffuses) and qijie (the common pathways through which meridian qi gathers) indicate its functions. Huatuo Jiaji (EX-B 2) reveals the rules of the transverse distribution of meridian points and the relevant indications, providing the theoretic foundation for acupuncture treatment. It highlights the importance of the anatomical knowledge in acupuncture effect and proposes a new idea for establishing an effective classification system of meridian points.

Chinese traditional medicine is long in the natural history, which focuses on herbal medicine, but has less discussion on acupuncture. On the basis of exploring the body knowledge in Huangdi Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor ' s Inner Canon ) from the perspective of the natural history, especially through the investigation of the evolution of acupoint knowledge, the route of the natural history of body in Huangdi Neijing have been detected in the aspects of observation, record, nomination and classification. In Huangdi Neijing , the natural history of body is characterized by the object annotation, the interaction between the nature and things, and the practicability. Launching the natural history of body is of great significance to understanding the generation of classical body knowledge and constructing acupuncture theory.

Since the anatomical location of acupoints was recorded in The latest Practice of Western Acupuncture in 1915, and Lecture Notes on Advanced Acupuncture in 1931, the Japanese acupuncture works of Chinese translation version, the location of Dazhui (GV 14) (under the spinous process of the 7th cervical vertebra) and Yaoyangguan (GV 3) (under the spinous process of the 4th lumbar vertebra) had rarely been questioned for nearly a century. In order to confirm the above statement, the writers have reviewed ancient literature, combined with the modern anatomical knowledge and searched the evidences from the core arguments of the acupuncture Mingtang chart and the bronze acupuncture statue. It is believed that Dazhui （GV 14） should be positioned under the spinous process of the 1st thoracic vertebra, and Yaoyangguan（GV 3） be under the spinous process of the 5th lumbar vertebra. Accordingly, all of the other acupoints of these meridians should be moved down by 1 vertebra, i.e. those on the governor vessel from Dazhui (GV 14) to Yaoyangguan (GV 3), those on the 1st lateral line of the bladder meridian of foot- taiyang from Dazhu (BL 11) to Baihuanshu (BL 30) and those on the 2nd lateral line of the bladder meridian from Fufen (BL 41) to Zhibian (BL 54).

This paper collects professor ZHOU Mei-sheng 's academic thought, "three-phases moxibustion sensation" and expounds its clinical value. Proposed by professor ZHOU , in accordance with the occurrence and development characteristics of the moxibustion propagated sensation, three time phases of moxibustion propagated sensation are divided, i.e. directional conduction phase (the first time phase), effect onset phase (the second time phase), and descending suspension and along-meridian re-transmission phase (the third time phase). In terms of the different characteristics among these three time phases, the clinical therapeutic regimens are designed accordingly. It provides a novel approach to the clinical application of moxibustion.

The paper introduces professor GAO Shu-zhong 's understanding on "seeking yin from yang needling method" and its clinical application on the basis of " qi street" and "four seas" theories. Through professor GAO's clinical practice for years, he integrates and extendes the theories of "seeking yin from yang ", " qi street" and "four seas" in Huangdi Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor ' s Inner Classic ). In this specific acupuncture method, in reference with the theories of " qi street" and "four seas", acupuncture is exerted on yang part of body, e.g. the back and lumber region to treat the diseases of yin parts, e.g. the chest and abdomen, which is differentiated as yin-yang imbalance in pathogenesis. In order to fully explain the clinical curative effect of "seeking yin from yang needling method", the common diseases in clinic, e.g. the disorders of heart, spleen and stomach systems, as well as the gynecology are taken as examples in the paper.

Professor WU Lian-zhong 's experience in treating spasmodic torticollis by Kaiqiao Shunjin method (resuscitation and regulating muscle) is summarized in this paper. The pathogenesis of spasmodic torticollis is the occluded brain orifices and delirium, qi disorder of meridian tendons, specifically divided into five categories: damp-heat, liver- yang hyperactivity, liver-kidney yin deficiency, deficiency of the governor vessel, excess of the governor vessel. The treatment should be based on the symptoms and the root causes, the symptoms should be the main treatment, and the root cause should be treated based on syndrome differentiation. The main treatment is Kaiqiao Shunjin method (resuscitation and regulating muscle), and to take the chief (five heart acupoints-Shuigou [GV 26], Laogong [PC 8], Yongquan [KI 1]), deputy (Yintang [GV 24 + ], Shangxing [GV 23] through Baihui [GV 20], Ximen [PC 4]), assistant (Fenglong [ST 40], Lianquan [CV 23], combined with tongue needle prick), envoy (Hanyan [GB 4]) as the basic main acupoints, at the same time cooperate with local acupoints to remove knots and accumulation. Finally, syndrome differentiation is adopted to dredge meridians and disperse knots, regulate the governor vessel, and nourish yin and dispel wind.

Acupuncture is characterized by the insertion of a fine metal needle through the skin of the human body at an acupuncture point (acupoint) in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). It is an ancient form of therapy, and has a long history of prosperity and decline. Due to the persistent efforts of TCM practitioners, a number of well-designed clinical trials regarding acupuncture have been published in the past decade. Besides, numerous basic researches aiming to reveal the mechanisms of acupuncture have also been conducted. Several scientific explanations have been obtained to interpret the arcane TCM theory. To sort out and summarize the evaluationmethods on the efficacy by acupuncture and moxibustion in ancient literature. The evaluation methods by ancient medical experts could be divided into two categories: one is according to the change of patient's conditions before and after treatment, including the subjective symptoms, the information getting from the four examination methods in TCM; the other is according to the characteristics of different interventions. For example, evaluating acupuncture by the "arrival of qi " "getting qi "; evaluating pricking collaterals-bloodletting therapy by the colour of blood; evaluating moxibustion by the skin colour and the feeling on the suppurated sore. This paper analyzed and discussed the particularity of acupuncture and moxibustion and the historical and technical reasons embodied in these methods, and then further expounded the enlightenment significance of these methods for clinical evaluation research for the contemporary acupuncture and moxibustion.

As a discipline, the independent knowledge system of acupuncture-moxibustion has been established in Wei - Jin Dynasties, while the education and management institutes have tended to be formalized since Northern and Southern Dynasties and continue to late imperial period. In the period of the Republic of China, acupuncture-moxibustion discipline began to be constructed intentionally, and the knowledge system, education institutes and institution have changed significantly with the characteristics of modern science. Now acupuncture has fully met the conditions of modern subjects. The study of the history of acupuncture-moxibustion discipline needs the perspective of internal and external history integration, focusing on the differences from academic history and educational history. In addition, four important topics in the current research of the history of acupuncture-moxibustion discipline are suggested: the relationship between acupuncture- moxibustion discipline and related disciplines, scientific value and technology philosophy, international recognition and branch disciplines.

Through mining and collecting the compiling thought of Miraculous Pivot (《》) and Plain Questions (《》), which were handed down from ancient times, it is discovered that these two ancient works refer to two components of one integrity book. With regard to the character and relationship, Miraculous Pivot is the main section and the essence, focusing on theoretic innovation. "Writing" is predominated in its statement. Plain Questions is the supplementary opinions to the main section, containing clinical application and material collection. "Compiling" is predominated in its statement. Both of two works were completed between the late Western Han Dynasty and the Eastern Han Dynasty. The author was a leading scholar and had worked in a national library for a long time. Before the Song Dynasty, Plain Questions had been widely circulated, while the spreading of Miraculous Pivot was limited. In the process of inheritance, some of the content of these two works were lost or supplemented, and the chapters were disarranged or adjusted artificially. But, in general, the original is not distorted seriously, especially the essential section, Miraculous Pivot .

Background: Acupuncture anesthesia was used instead of intubation anesthesia in the 1970s and 1980s in West Germany and West Berlin. In East Germany acupuncture played no decisive role., Sources: Different articles and papers in journals, in daily press, statements of contemporary witnesses, films, records in archives., Results: As in other Western countries, acupuncture was hugely popular in the Federal Republic of Germany in the 1970s. Chief triggers were the state visits to China of the American President Richard Nixon in 1972 and shortly thereafter of West German Foreign Minister Walter Scheel and his wife Mildred, an x-ray technician. During that period observation of an operation under acupuncture anesthesia was an obligatory element in the agenda of a foreign delegation. Following this showcasing, acupuncture was widely adopted in Western surgery as an alternative to the previously exclusive employment of intubation anesthesia. While the alternative method was soon abandoned in the frontline city of West Berlin, it continued to prevail in other West German cities, e.g. Gießen and Munich. Following the Chinese example, the acupuncture effect was normally enhanced electrically. In accordance with the animosity between the USSR and the People's Republic of China, exchange between the German Democratic Republic and China was very restricted through the late 1980s. This made it easier for East German acupuncture sceptics to reject the procedure and brand it as unscientific. The common opinion is that in Europe acupuncture was introduced in China at the end of the XVII century. However there are some publications, which describe the similar treatment method in the Stone Age Europe. From ancient to late middle century theoretical and practical aspects of medieval medicine in Europe were very similar to the Tradition Chinese medicine. So it is possible that historical phlebotomy in Europe (bloodletting) played the same role as the acupuncture in the Chinese therapy and they had one scientific source. In this article we are comparing the modern acupuncture with some Bohemian medical tractates (Practica medicinalis by Sigismundus Albicus from 1408-1424, De sanguinis minucione by Cristannus de Prachaticz from 1430). We can see the close relationship between localizations and indications of medieval phlebotomy and modern acupuncture points. 40% of the bloodletting points have close localization with the modern acupuncture points and 57% of their indications are common or very similar. The similarity of two methods may be explained in two ways. First is a common scientific source and intensive interaction and crosscultural transmission of knowledge during medical development in China and Europe up to the beginning of the XV century. This possibility indicates also some linguistic coincidences. On the other hand, both methods could have been developed separately based on common clinical empire and objective neuro-physiological patterns of human body., (Copyright © 2019. The literature study and physical measurement were adopted to analyze the origin and relevant texture information of a box of French golden acupuncture needles stored in Yunnan University of CM. In 1901 the French vice-consul George Soulié de Morant went to China, based on his Chinese linguistic skills, he studied with several Chinese medicine masters during that time. After returning to France, he researched clinic acupuncture with western medical doctors and published articles and books on it, which led him to be a Nobel Prize nominee. He made a box of acupuncture needles, collected by Yunnan University of CM, in which nine needles made by the gold-copper and silver-zinc alloy, decorated with ruby and sapphire representing tonification and dispersion. The parameter of material, thickness and length match well to the description in Zhengjiufa ( Chinese Acupuncture ). Being the golden box with needles of its kind in the whole world, it has more value of medicine, education, historical and cultural relics than jewellery, which is the wisdom and innovation stimulated by ancient Chinese medical theory in the western world.

The bamboo slips of acupuncture prescriptions unearthed from the Han Dynasty Tomb at Laoguanshan include both theoretical elaborations and formulae. Specifications for diagnosis and treatment, standards for needles and a variety of acupuncture techniques are discussed. The 40 acupuncture prescriptions recorded are based on presupposed summaries of theory and experience, rather than empirical formulae. Among them, 28 have needling sites that are maishu (vessel points), with proper names and specific locations. The names of these maishu adopt the pattern of 'the name of the site + the name of one of the three yin and three yang meridians'. Needling numbers are indicated for the majority of the sites of acupuncture stimulation, no matter whether for maishu or for sites at pathological areas. These statements fully embody the distinct characteristics of Bianque acupuncture.

It is believed that acupuncture science of Buddhist medicine has a long history and great characteristics after the investigation, research and analysis on the historic literature of acupuncture in Chinese Buddhist Canon. The writers tried to give the statements from 4 aspects. 1. Science of acupuncture in the time of Buddha. Firstly, the Buddhist acupuncture was mentioned in the time of Buddha, including substantial acupuncture, finger acupuncture and mental acupuncture. The substantial acupuncture refers to metal needle, plant needle, stone needle, bone needle, etc. Finger acupuncture means taking finger as a needle. Mental acupuncture implies that the Buddhism idea is considered in acupuncture. Secondly, the Buddhist medicine is the combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine. The needle box had become the necessity of the medical scholars in traveling. 2. Achievements of medical Buddhists in dynasties. In the paper, 33 medical Buddhists were listed, such as AN Shigao, YU Fakai , etc. They made the great contributions to the development of Buddhist medicine of acupuncture. 3. The characteristics of Buddhist acupuncture in clinical diagnosis and treatment. 1) The combination of acupuncture and herbal medicine and this mutual supplementation; 2) Mutual treatment of acupuncture and psychological therapy; 3) Remarkable therapeutic effects of specific acupuncture techniques, such as Yan needling technique and acupotomy; 4) Medical cases of Buddhist acupuncture; and 5) Precaution of misdiagnosis and prevention of mistreatment. 4. The penetrating statement of acupuncture techniques by the Buddhists in dynasties. 1) The cause-effect theory is introduced in treatment and diagnosis by medical Buddhists. The effectiveness is achieved through causality system. 2) Cataract is treated with gold needle. 3) The medical master is not qualified if nothing to know on acupuncture. The authors believe that the substantial acupuncture techniques need to be further studied and the non-substantial one requests us to be perceived.

This article discusses the development of early acupuncture needles as demonstrated by the artifacts excavated from the Northern part of the Yanji district, Jilin, China, during the Japanese colonial era (reported in 1941). Numerous bone needles, stone needles, and other medical devices were found in the Xiaoyingzi excavation. The stone needles from Xiaoyingzi can be categorized into three grades, based on length, of 8cm, 12-15cm, and 18cm. A set of round stones for massage were also discovered, along with obsidian blades. These relics were carefully stored in the middle of the body in the stone coffin. In addition to Xiaoyingzi, stone needles were also excavated along the lower valley region of the Tuman (Tumen, ) River. These facts indicate that the owner was involved in medical practice, and that medical procedures using stone needles were quite popular at the time. This article carefully investigates that the relics have nothing to do with weaving textile or military use. Current research on the origin of acupuncture has been confined either to stone needles from the prehistoric age or to bronze needles, as well as to literature from the Warring States period to the Han China, during which acupuncture technology was considerably expanded. However, substantial knowledge on the "gap" between stone needles and metal needles has been procured through the analysis of Xiaoyingzi, Yanji. The findings of Xiaoyingzi are also significant in providing a more detailed reconstruction of the development of acupuncture in East Asia and emergence of acupuncture throughout history. A large amount of medical items (stone and bone needles, cases for needles, massage stone type bianshi, and etc.), have been excavated from Xiaoyingzi and other neighbouring sites, Along with geographic and ecological factors, this archeological data strongly suggests the medical tradition of using acupuncture needles was practiced around Tumen River basin in the Bronze Age (10th century B.C.).

Background: The use of acupuncture has gained popularity in the USA. The number of acupuncture users and licensed acupuncturists increased by 50% and 100%, respectively, between 2002 and 2012, coinciding with increasing acknowledgement of the importance and efficacy of acupuncture over this time period., Methods: This paper presents new findings from the complementary health approaches section of the 2012 National Health Interview Survey (n=33 373 respondents). In particular, data on the use of acupuncture and user characteristics were compared against data collected from an earlier survey in 2002. Statistical analyses included weighted distribution, logistical regression and Pearson's χ 2 tests., Results: The profile of the most common acupuncture users comprised the following sociodemographics age 41-65 years (47.4%); female gender (69.6%); and non-Hispanic (85.3%) and/or white (78.1%) ethnicity. Respondents also tended to be US citizens (92.1%) with some college education (57.1%) and in very good to excellent health (60.8%). The proportion of respondents using acupuncture for treatment of a specific health problem, as opposed to promotion of general wellness, was 84.7% in 2002 and 55.3% in 2012., Conclusions: Our data suggest a growing development of acupuncture in the USA. The painted red lines on the wooden carved acupuncture statue of Western Han Dynasty in Laoguanshan, illustrate the running courses of the"eleven meridians"on the body surface in the early meridian doctrine. The carved white lines show the body surface running courses of the"twelve meridians"in the meridian doctrine and the Sanjiao images in Sanjiao doctrine. The dots on the wooden carved acupuncture statue are of two categories, one of them is of regulatory, round and concave spots, which are carved before the process of lacquer undercoat. The other category is of different sizes and in irregular forms, which are carved simultaneously with those white lines. Altogether there are over one hundred dots in these two categories, representing the mai shu (transport point of vessels). The wooden carved acupuncture statue reflects the distinct characteristics on the running courses of meridians, Sanjiao doctrine, the nomenclature and localization of" mai shu "in Bianque medicine, which provides the most powerful evidence for the confirmation of the correlation between Laoguanshan excavated documents and Bianque medicine.

This paper reviews the history of acupuncture's dissemination to Japan, France, and England in the modern period. In particular, it examines how Chinese acupuncture methods were modified in each of these countries and how these modifications were theoretically justified based on new readings of classical texts. In each country, these currents of acupuncture practice all claimed to be transmitting true traditional acupuncture, even as they developed along different trajectories and created new and different theories and practices of acupuncture. Some of these foreign methods were re-exported back to China, where they, in turn, have influenced the development of Chinese acupuncture.

As an analogy, a prototype of "bell-striking" is proposed in the present paper for exploring the basic properties, major elements, and potential mechanisms of acupuncture stimulation. On the strength of analysis on the physiological basis of acupuncture effect, several fundamental aspects of acupuncture are summarized as a) the body-surface stimulating characters, b) general and local effects, and c) triggering the auto-regulative function of the organism, which mimics the "bell-striking" response. Namely, when stroke, bell will chime, otherwise, chiming will not be heard. During analyzing special contents of acupuncture theory, its formative background should not be separated, and it is improper to take, modern medical theory of the human body as the guiding thinking way for researching the ancient Chinese medical literature.

The reinforcing and reducing technique based on the speed of needle insertion and withdrawal is the important acupuncture technique recorded in Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine ). Regarding the speed of needle insertion and withdrawal, the timing of needle insertion and withdrawal is one of the key factors to judge the therapeutic effects. In the paper, the origin was studied on the two methods of waiting for qi recorded in Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor's Classic of Internal Medicine ), e.g. "waiting for respiratory qi " and "waiting for qi beneath needle"; and its application progression and clinical significance were explained. Of them, the "waiting for qi beneath needle" is mostly used to decide the timing of needle withdrawal and closely related to the therapeutic effects of reinforcing and reducing technique; and its application is fully developed in later generations. In Nanjing ( Treaties on Difficult Questions ), it stresses the needle insertion after waiting for qi with the assistant hand, lifting and thrusting manipulation is followed after arrival of qi beneath needle. This technique brings the impacts on the reinforcing and reducing technique of acupuncture in later generations.

Reinforcing and reducing manipulation is the elite of traditional acupuncture needling methods. Abundant records could be found in Neijing ( The Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon ) and Nanjing ( The Classic on Medical Problems ) at early times. In the present paper, the author collates and compares the recordation of reinforcing and reducing acupuncture manipulation in these two classics on the basis of the principle and connotation of the two manipulations and from three key factors as stimulus location,manipulation technique and needling time. Based on objective analysis of the original text,distinct differences were found in above three aspects. Therefore, the conclusion is that Neijing and Nanjing resemble different medical school of thoughts at an early phase of acupuncture theories.

The ancient classic work Yellow Emperor's Inner Canon has abundant expositions about the relationship between the acupuncture needle manipulation and pulse diagnosis. However, the relevant imparting and inheritance situations are relatively weaker nowadays probably due to the rapid development of modern diagnosis-therapeutic techniques and some faults or careless omission in understanding classical medical works. Qi , a core concept of the abundant expositions in Inner Canon , has seldom been thoroughly interpreted about its connotations. For this reason, in the present paper, the authors make a careful explanation about the connotations of Qi in Inner Canon from 1) the concept of Qikou (a superficial window of the body reflecting the functional state of internal organs), 2) pulse conditions, 3) its relationship with meridian-collateral diagnosis, and 4) the link between acupuncture needle stimulation and pulse diagnosis based on the scriptures and words description in combination with many scholars' doctrines, trying to explore its profound significance. In addition, the authors also expound its association with the effectiveness of distant treatment of acupuncture and the characteristics in relation to ancient medical scholars' thoughts.

It has always been considered that Zhenjiu Dacheng ( Compendium of Acupuncture and Moxibustion ) printed by ZHAO Wenbing is the earliest version. In comparative study, it is found that there are two versions in the Ming dynasty, one is the original, stored in the Library of China Academy of Sciences and another one is the revision, stored in the Library of Tianjin University of TCM, Zhejiang Provincial Library and the Library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences. The last item, Chengjiang (CV 24) in the Acupoint Indication of Conception Vessel in volume 7 is included in the revised edition, but not covered in the original one, which is the difference between the two versions. Both of the versions were in the Ming dynasty, rather than the block-printed one in the Qing dynasty.

Acupuncture-moxibustion material found in Dunhuang stone chamber shows academic value on research of acupuncture-moxibustion in Tang Dynasty and before. In the paper we summarize its medical prescriptions and the existing acupoint application contents. It is considered that its acupoint application is widely clinically used in dermatological department, cosmetology department, ophthalmology and otorhinolaryngology departments, paediatrics department, gynaecology department, anorectal department, orthopedics and traumatology department. It achieves remarkable effects in dermatological department, orthopedics and traumatology department. Medical literature of Dunhuang is a treasure of TCM with distinctive feature and it deserves to be further explored so as to serve the clinic and promote the inheritance and development of Dunhuang medicine, such as finding out high effect prescription.

Battlefield acupuncture is a unique auricular acupuncture procedure which is being used in a number of military medical facilities throughout the Department of Defense (DoD). It has been used with anecdotal published positive impact with warriors experiencing polytrauma, post-traumatic stress disorder, and traumatic brain injury. It has also been effectively used to treat warriors with muscle and back pain from carrying heavy combat equipment in austere environments. This article highlights the history within the DoD related to the need for nonpharmacologic/opioid pain management across the continuum of care from combat situations, during evacuation, and throughout recovery and rehabilitation. The article describes the history of auricular acupuncture and details implementation procedures. Training is necessary and partially funded through DoD and Veteran's Administration (VA) internal Joint Incentive Funds grants between the DoD and the VA for multidisciplinary teams as part of a larger initiative related to the recommendations from the DoD Army Surgeon General's Pain Management Task Force. Finally, Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences School of Medicine and Graduate School of Nursing faculty members present how this interdisciplinary training is currently being integrated into both schools for physicians and advanced practice nurses at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences. Through systematic review of the literature on the treatment of different clinical conditions or illnesses with acupuncture and moxibustion therapies in the 20 th century, the authors of the present paper analyzed the evolution process of classification of related clinical disorders. It was found that the classification and nomenclature of clinical disorders or illnesses are defined in terms of traditional Chinese medicine or western medicine, which undergoes an evolutionary process from western medicine to Chinese medicine and back to western medicine. This evolution process is due to the intrinsic requirement' of clinical practice such as thinking ways of diagnosis and treatment or to be influenced by extrinsic factors including introduction of western medicine at the Republic period, policies of"advanced studies of traditional Chinese physcians" and "western medicine doctors" lear-ning from traditional Chinese medicine, and the leading role of western medicine,etc. The former issue about the diagnosis and treatment of clinical problems needs being researched further.

WANG Zhizhong , born in the Southern Song Dynasty, was proficient in TCM theory and enjoyed summarizing proved prescriptions. During his spare time, he wrote Experience on Acupuncture and Moxibustion Therapy with scientific writing structure, wide quote of references and attached medical reports, which modified and enriched the content of acupoint therapy. This book played an important role as a link between past and future; it included a considerable number of moxibustion methods and was considered as the greatest medical achievement before Song Dynasty. In addition, this book contained the greatest number of proved prescriptions among the ancient acupuncture books, so its academic value was self-evident. However, when examining and correcting the acupoints, WANG ignored the fact that acupuncture physicians had different clinical experience and their understanding on the body structure was discrepant, so the contradictions of location and indications of acupoints appeared in the book.

Anatomical dissection has begun to reveal striking similarities between gross anatomical structures and the system of nomenclature used in traditional Chinese acupuncture. This paper argues that acupuncture point nomenclature is rooted in systematic anatomical investigation of cadaveric specimens, and that acupuncture points and meridians are purposefully named to reflect observable physical form. Two types of evidence are compared: observations of physical structures based on anatomical dissection, and translation and analysis of original Chinese texts. Evidence is contextualized through in-depth practical understanding of acupuncture. Points designated as [Chinese character] tian (heavenly/superior), [Chinese character] xia (below/inferior), [Chinese character] liao (bone-hole), [Chinese character] fei (flying), [Chinese character] wei (bend), and [Chinese character] xi (mountain stream/ravine) are investigated. These acupuncture point names: (a) specify position; (b) reflect function and/or form; (c) indicate homologous structures; (d) mark unusual structures; and/or (e) describe the physical appearance of a deep (dissected) structure by likening it to a homologous everyday object. Results raise intriguing possibilities for developing an understanding of acupuncture points and meridians firmly based in the material and functional anatomy of the human body. Such an understanding has the potential to open new fields of thought about functional anatomy. By analyzing the acupuncture taboos in Neijing (Internal Classic) on clinical application of mind conduction of acupuncture therapy in going against the actual situation, astronomy and others, it is found that the relevant acupuncture taboo implies many subtle mysteries of human body, qi, mind and astronomy, which have not been discovered yet in modern science and are very significant in qi protection. In Neijing, the acupuncture physicians have been highly required in the mind treatment, in which, accurately regulating qi circulation is the target in the treatment. The mind conduction is used for qi circulation to accomplish accurately the reinforcing or reducing in the deficiency or excess condition. All of the taboos are provided to normalize the accuracy of reinforcing and reducing technique of acupuncture therapy and avoid the damage of qi in human body. Hence, those taboos must be obeyed so as to prevent from serious consequence and ensure the safety of this acupuncture therapy.

Qijie theory is one of the important components of TCM meridian and collateral system. It is the shortcut for the communication from the exterior to the interior and for the transverse connection, strengthens the therapeutic effects of acupuncture and moxibustion on the disorders of internal organs and enlarges the indications of acupoints. Professor LAI Xinsheng originally creats Tongyuan acupuncture technique. It is a kind of acupuncture therapeutic methods, including promoting the circulation of the governor vessel, regulating the mind and conducting qi to the origin. In order to analyze the connection between Tongyuan acupuncture technique and traditional meridian and collateral theory, the connotations of Tongyuan acupuncture technique and qijie, as well as the in-terrelationship between them are taken as the basis in the paper. By tracing the literature records, the original concept of qijie is detected. Through proving clinically Tongyuan acupuncture technique, it is revealed that qijie is the arrowhead on the main road of meridian qi circulation and is the essential connotation of the direct path of the body surface connecting with the deep layers of the body as well as the zangfu organs and tissues. It is summarized that the traditional qijie theory provides the powerful theoretic evidence for the treatment with Tongyuan acupuncture technique.

Professor GAO Weibin academically advocates, based on basic theory of TCM and theories of different schools, modern science technology should be used for the methods and principles of acupuncture and Chinese medicine for neuropathy, so as to explore and summarize the rules, characteristics and advantages of TCM for nervous system disease, especially bulbar paralysis. During the treatment of bulbar paralysis, professor GAO creatively proposes the effective acupuncture points such as Gongxue, Tunyan-1, Tunyan-2, Fayin, Tiyan and Zhifanliu from the aspects of neuroanatomy, and analyzes their anatomical structure and action mechanism.

Numerology has a long history in China and has the profound impacts on every academic field in TCM, with acupuncture involved. In this paper, the impacts on acupuncture were discussed in different aspects such as the numbers of meridians, the length of meridian, the time taboo of acupuncture, acupuncture manipulation and time acupuncture. It was found that numerology had laid the critical impact on acupuncture and had the profound imprint nowadays. It is of great significance to study the numerology theory in its impacts on acupuncture, in the exploration on the theories behind acupuncture as well as the comprehensive understanding of acupuncture.

Mr ZHENG Yugui, a distinguished acupuncturist in Qilu area, is one of the successors of Chengjiang acupuncture school in Shandong province. Through collecting the papers and works concerning Mr ZHENG, the academic thoughts are summarized, including careful and clear differentiation of syndrome, specific and precise selection of acupoints, reinforcing and reducing methods based on qi, and gentle and soft manipulation of needles. He has discovered new acupoints such as Fengyan point, etc. He also focuses on moxibustion and creates Taiyang moxibustion method. In addition, to develop acupuncture education, Mr ZHENG has played a deep and important role in spreading Chengjiang acupuncture school in Shandong province.

By analyzing the articles in Huangdi Neijing (Inner Canon of Yellow Emperor), combined with the verification of consciousness in vitro in clinic and modern science, it is found Huangdi Neijing has made special requirements of treating spirit for physicians using spirit-qi acupuncture. The physicians consciously use different methods to motivate the spirit of physician and patients, especially patients, to transform it to the physiological effect of patients, which could minimize the psychological factors that make negative influence on treatment; also the psychotherapy is considered as the most important principle of treating spirit. The reinforcing and reducing methods in later generations, mainly lifting-thrusting twirling method, unintentionally lead patients into a basic or strong status of treating spirit or keeping spirit during the process of achieving stimulation and needle sensation. To partially perform the special role of treating spirit for physicians in Huangdi Neijing on patients could cause the chages including patient-based using spirit to move qi. It not only inspires the body's natural resistance to disease and self-healing, but also motivates the self-protection mechanism of keeping spirit.

With literature of professor CHEN Yinglong such as Medical Notes of Doctor CHEN Yinglongfor Taiwan Compatriots,the'experience of doctor CHEN Yinglong treating common diseases in Fujian and Tai-wan is summarized. The diseases in the paper are constipation, retention of urine, asthma, vec6rdia, bi syndromeinsomnia, thoracic obstruction, pediatric obesity and freckle of face, etc. It is discovered that professor CHENYinglong treated diseases with combination of acupuncture and medication and accurate acupoints according to thefeature of climate in Fujian and Taiwan.

Professor JIA Chunsheng believes that "Dongyuan's acupuncture therapy" proposed by GAO Wu could not entirely reflect LI Dongyuan's academic thought of acupuncture and moxibustion. Hence, we collected all of the academic works of LI Dongyuan and extracted the texts relevant with acupuncture-moxibustion therapy, titled as Dongyuan's acupuncture-moxibustion therapy. This process contributed to the deeper study on Dongyuan's acupuncture and moxibustion academic thought. By the influence of Dongyuan's acupuncture-moxibustion academic thought, in association with his clinical experience for dozens of years, Professor JIA Chunsheng proposed that acupuncture and moxibustion should pay attention to the regulation and tonification of spleen and kidney. In clinical practice, Zhongwan (CV 12), bilateral Tianshu (ST 25), Qihai (CV 6) and Guanyuan (CV 4) are commonly selected to consolidate the root, cultivate the primary and treat the spleen and kidney simultaneously. The locations of the above selected points are distributed like a star. This "star-like point selection method" points to the importance of the spleen and kidney (the primary qi). For many diseases, especially the disorders of internal injury, the star-like acupuncture therapy is commonly used and the relevant acupoints are supplemented. The good clinical efficacy has been achieved.

Trigerninal neuralgia is a common refractory disease in clinic. Professor FANG Jianqiao has rich experience through diagnosing and treating the disease for many years. In the first diagnosis, professor FANG underlines the position of damaged neuron and syndrome differentiation. He considers acupuncture should be implemented by stages,namely according to whether the patients are in the period of pain attack, different acupuocture prescriptions are made. Acupuncture manipulation and needle-retention time should be adjusted according to the condition of disease. And the appropriate application of electroacupuncture and transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation can strengthen the effect.

The accurate annotation of ashi points depends on the understanding of ashi. The main reasons for the divergence of current three viewpoints on the annotation of ashi are the literature basis and its different interpretations. By conducting a comprehensive collection of ancient and modern literature and analyzing different interpretation methods, the original meaning of ashi is studied, so as to explain the understanding of ashi points and ashi method.

In 1962, Bonghan Kim in North Korea published a report on a new vascular system in mammals, which he claimed as the acupuncture meridian. He soon named it the Bonghan System. Between 1962 and 1965, he published five reports, with detailed descriptions on the system. Kim also described the self-regenerating nature of a unique cell type Sanals in the system and these cells are now confirmed to be a type of stem cells. According to his findings, the system appears to have vital roles in maintaining mammalian lives. Kim disappeared in around 1965 and the research on this system also completely stopped. In 2002, Kwang-Sup Soh reported re-discovery of the system and, since then, his team has been leading the research on the system. The Soh team has confirmed many of Kim's findings to be valid, although so many of Kim's results are still to be verified. In 2010, the system was renamed the Primo Vascular System (PVS). Soh and researchers trained by Soh have also been reporting new scientific facts on the system. The PVS exists throughout the entire body, including inside the blood and lymphatic vessels. Recent reports revealed more evidence for it to be the acupuncture meridian, where some acupuncture therapies are applied for the blood pressure control. Thus, the PVS is expected to have roles in the oxygen transport in tissues. Many study results also suggest that the PVS may have roles in body homeostasis and regeneration. This article chronologically reviews Kim's scientific findings on the Bonghan System, which were verified by the PVS scientists (after 2000), and also the new findings reported by the PVS scientists.
