Dynamic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) is nowadays one of the most interesting applications of SERS, in particular for single molecule studies. In fact, it enables the study of real-time processes at the molecular level. This review summarizes the latest developments in dynamic SERS techniques and their applications, focusing on new instrumentation, data analysis methods, temporal resolution and sensitivity improvements, and novel substrates. We highlight the progress and applications of single-molecule dynamic SERS in monitoring chemical reactions, catalysis, biomolecular interactions, conformational dynamics, and real-time sensing and detection. We aim to provide a comprehensive review on its advancements, applications as well as its current challenges and development frontiers.

Optical antennas have been extensively employed to manipulate the photophysical properties of single photon emitters. Coupling between an emitter and a given resonant mode of an optical antenna depends mainly on three parameters: spectral overlap, relative distance, and relative orientation between the emitter's transition dipole moment and the antenna. While the first two have been already extensively demonstrated, achieving full coupling control remains unexplored due to the challenges in manipulating at the same time both the position and orientation of single molecules. Here, we use the DNA origami technique to assemble a dimer optical antenna and position a single fluorescent molecule at the antenna gap with controlled orientation, predominately parallel or perpendicular to the antenna's main axis. We study the coupling for both conditions through fluorescence measurements correlated with scanning electron microscopy images, revealing a 5-fold higher average fluorescence intensity when the emitter is aligned with the antenna's main axis and a maximum fluorescence enhancement of ~ 1400-fold. A comparison to realistic numerical simulations suggests that the observed distribution of fluorescence enhancement arises from small variations in emitter orientation and gap size. This work establishes DNA origami as a versatile platform to fully control the coupling between emitters and optical antennas, trailblazing the way for self-assembled nanophotonic devices with optimized and more homogenous performance.

With sizable volatile envelopes but smaller radii than the solar system ice giants, sub-Neptunes have been revealed as one of the most common types of planet in the galaxy. While the spectroscopic characterization of larger sub-Neptunes (2.5-4R$_\oplus$) has revealed hydrogen-dominated atmospheres, smaller sub-Neptunes (1.6--2.5R$_\oplus$) could either host thin, rapidly evaporating hydrogen-rich atmospheres or be stable metal-rich "water worlds" with high mean molecular weight atmospheres and a fundamentally different formation and evolutionary history. Here, we present the 0.6--2.8$\mu$m JWST NIRISS/SOSS transmission spectrum of GJ 9827 d, the smallest (1.98 R$_\oplus$) warm (T$_\mathrm{eq, A_B=0.3} \sim 620$K) sub-Neptune where atmospheric absorbers have been detected to date. Our two transit observations with NIRISS/SOSS, combined with the existing HST/WFC3 spectrum, enable us to break the clouds-metallicity degeneracy. We detect water in a highly metal-enriched "steam world" atmosphere (O/H of $\sim 4$ by mass and H$_2$O found to be the background gas with a volume mixing ratio of >31%). We further show that these results are robust to stellar contamination through the transit light source effect. We do not detect escaping metastable He, which, combined with previous nondetections of escaping He and H, supports the steam atmosphere scenario. In water-rich atmospheres, hydrogen loss driven by water photolysis happens predominantly in the ionized form which eludes observational constraints. We also detect several flares in the NIRISS/SOSS light-curves with far-UV energies of the order of 10$^{30}$ erg, highlighting the active nature of the star. The Neptunian desert and savanna have been recently found to be separated by a ridge, an overdensity of planets in the $\simeq$3-5 days period range. These features are thought to be shaped by dynamical and atmospheric processes. However, their relative roles are not yet well understood. We intend to confirm and characterise the super-Neptune TESS candidate TOI-5005.01, which orbits a moderately bright (V = 11.8) solar-type star (G2 V) with an orbital period of 6.3 days. We confirm TOI-5005 b to be a transiting super-Neptune with a radius of $R_{\rm p}$ = $6.25\pm 0.24$ $\rm R_{\rm \oplus}$ ($R_{\rm p}$ = $0.558\pm 0.021$ $\rm R_{\rm J}$) and a mass of $M_{\rm p}$ = $32.7\pm 5.9$ $\rm M_{\oplus}$ ($M_{\rm p}$ = $0.103\pm 0.018$ $\rm M_{\rm J}$), which corresponds to a mean density of $\rho_{\rm p}$ = $0.74 \pm 0.16$ $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$. Our internal structure modelling indicates that the overall metal mass fraction is well constrained to a value slightly lower than that of Neptune and Uranus ($Z_{\rm planet}$ = $0.76^{+0.04}_{-0.11}$). We also estimated the present-day atmospheric mass-loss rate of TOI-5005 b but found contrasting predictions depending on the choice of photoevaporation model. At a population level, we find statistical evidence ($p$-value = $0.0092^{+0.0184}_{-0.0066}$) that planets in the savanna such as TOI-5005 b tend to show lower densities than planets in the ridge, with a dividing line around 1 $\rm g \, cm^{-3}$, which supports the hypothesis of different evolutionary pathways populating both regimes. TOI-5005 b is located in a key region of the period-radius space to study the transition between the Neptunian ridge and the savanna. It orbits the brightest star of all such planets, which makes it a target of interest for atmospheric and orbital architecture observations that will bring a clearer picture of its overall evolution., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A. Despite recent advances demonstrating vision-language models' (VLMs) abilities to describe complex relationships in images using natural language, their capability to quantitatively reason about object sizes and distances remains underexplored. In this work, we introduce a manually annotated benchmark, Q-Spatial Bench, with 271 questions across five categories designed for quantitative spatial reasoning and systematically investigate the performance of state-of-the-art VLMs on this task. Our analysis reveals that reasoning about distances between objects is particularly challenging for SoTA VLMs; however, some VLMs significantly outperform others, with an over 40-point gap between the two best performing models. We also make the surprising observation that the success rate of the top-performing VLM increases by 19 points when a reasoning path using a reference object emerges naturally in the response. Inspired by this observation, we develop a zero-shot prompting technique, SpatialPrompt, that encourages VLMs to answer quantitative spatial questions using reference objects as visual cues. By instructing VLMs to use reference objects in their reasoning paths via SpatialPrompt, Gemini 1.5 Pro, Gemini 1.5 Flash, and GPT-4V improve their success rates by over 40, 20, and 30 points, respectively. Context: Online collaborative creation of models is becoming commonplace. Collaborative modeling using chatbots and natural language may lower the barriers to modeling for users from different domains. Objective: We compare the perceived usability of two similarly online collaborative modeling tools, the SOCIO chatbot and the Creately web-based tool. Method: We conducted a crossover experiment with 66 participants. The evaluation instrument was based on the System Usability Scale (SUS). We performed a quantitative and qualitative exploration, employing inferential statistics and thematic analysis. Results: The results indicate that chatbots enabling natural language communication enhance communication and collaboration efficiency and improve the user experience. Conclusion: Chatbots need to improve guidance and help for novices, but they appear beneficial for enhancing user experience.

Context: Recent developments in natural language processing have facilitated the adoption of chatbots in typically collaborative software engineering tasks (such as diagram modelling). Families of experiments can assess the performance of tools and processes and, at the same time, alleviate some of the typical shortcomings of individual experiments (e.g., inaccurate and potentially biased results due to a small number of participants). Objective: Compare the usability of a chatbot for collaborative modelling (i.e., SOCIO) and an online web tool (i.e., Creately). Method: We conducted a family of three experiments to evaluate the usability of SOCIO against the Creately online collaborative tool in academic settings. Results: The student participants were faster at building class diagrams using the chatbot than with the online collaborative tool and more satisfied with SOCIO. Besides, the class diagrams built using the chatbot tended to be more concise -albeit slightly less complete. Conclusion: Chatbots appear to be helpful for building class diagrams. In fact, our study has helped us to shed light on the future direction for experimentation in this field and lays the groundwork for researching the applicability of chatbots in diagramming.

Context: The usability software quality attribute aims to improve system user performance. In a previous study, we found evidence of the impact of a set of usability characteristics from the viewpoint of users in terms of efficiency, effectiveness and satisfaction. However, the impact level appears to depend on the usability feature and suggest priorities with respect to their implementation depending on how they promote user performance. Objectives: We use a family of three experiments to increase the precision and generalization of the results in the baseline experiment and provide findings on the impact on user performance of the Abort Operation, Progress Feedback and Preferences usability mechanisms. Method: We conduct two replications of the baseline experiment in academic settings. We analyse the data of 367 experimental subjects and apply aggregation (meta-analysis) procedures. Results: We find that the Abort Operation and Preferences usability mechanisms appear to improve system usability a great deal with respect to efficiency, effectiveness and user satisfaction. Conclusions: We find that the family of experiments further corroborates the results of the baseline experiment. Most of the results are statistically significant, and, because of the large number of experimental subjects, the evidence that we gathered in the replications is sufficient to outweigh other experiments., Comment: 16 pages, IEEE Transaction on Software Engineering

The correct insertion of virtual objects in images of real-world scenes requires a deep understanding of the scene's lighting, geometry and materials, as well as the image formation process. While recent large-scale diffusion models have shown strong generative and inpainting capabilities, we find that current models do not sufficiently "understand" the scene shown in a single picture to generate consistent lighting effects (shadows, bright reflections, etc.) while preserving the identity and details of the composited object. We propose using a personalized large diffusion model as guidance to a physically based inverse rendering process. Our method recovers scene lighting and tone-mapping parameters, allowing the photorealistic composition of arbitrary virtual objects in single frames or videos of indoor or outdoor scenes. Wide-separation lensed quasars (WSLQs) are a rare class of strongly lensed quasars, magnified by foreground massive galaxy clusters, with typically large magnifications of the multiple quasar images. They are a relatively unexplored opportunity for detailed study of quasar host galaxies. The current small sample of known WSLQs has a median redshift of $z\approx 2.1$, larger than most other samples of quasar host galaxies studied to date. Here, we derive precise constraints on the properties of six WSLQs and their host galaxies, using parametric surface brightness fitting, measurements of quasar emission lines, and stellar population synthesis of host galaxies in six WSLQ systems. Our results, with significant uncertainty, indicate that these six hosts are a mixture of star-forming and quiescent galaxies. To probe for co-evolution between AGNs and host galaxies, we model the offset from the `local' ($z=0$) $M_{\rm{BH}}\unicode{x2013}M_\star$ relation as a simple power-law in redshift. Accounting for selection effects, a WSLQ-based model for evolution in the $M_{\rm{BH}}\unicode{x2013}M_\star$ relation has a power-law index of $\gamma_M=-0.42\pm0.31$, consistent with no evolution. Compared to several literature samples, which mostly probe unlensed quasars at $z<2$, the WSLQ sample shows less evolution from the local relation, at $\sim 4\sigma$. We find that selection affects and choices of $M_{\rm{BH}}$ calibration are the most important systematics in these comparisons. Given that we resolve host galaxy flux confidently even from the ground in some instances, our work demonstrates that WSLQs and highly magnified AGNs are exceptional systems for future AGN$\unicode{x2013}$host co-evolution studies., Comment: Submitted to ApJ. 25 pages + 7-page appendix, 12+4 figures. We study practical approximations to Kolmogorov prefix complexity (K) using IMP2, a high-level programming language. Our focus is on investigating the interpreter optimality for this language as the reference machine for the Coding Theorem Method (CTM). A method advanced to deal with applications to algorithmic complexity different to the popular traditional lossless compression approach based on the principles of algorithmic probability. The chosen model of computation is proven to be suitable for this task and a comparison to other models and methods is performed. Our findings show that CTM approximations using our model do not always correlate with results from lower-level models of computation. This suggests some models may require a larger program space to converge to Levin's universal distribution. Furthermore, we compare CTM with an upper bound to Kolmogorov complexity and find a strong correlation, supporting CTM's validity as an approximation method with finer-grade resolution of K., Comment: 17 pages, 3 tables and 3 figures

Controlling the light emitted by individual molecules is instrumental to a number of novel nanotechnologies ranging from super-resolution bio-imaging and molecular sensing to quantum nanophotonics. Molecular emission can be tailored by modifying the local photonic environment, for example by precisely placing a single molecule inside a plasmonic nanocavity with the help of DNA origami. Here, using this scalable approach, we show that commercial fluorophores experience giant Purcell factors and Lamb shifts, reaching values on par with those recently reported in scanning tip experiments. Engineering of plasmonic modes enables cavity-mediated fluorescence far detuned from the zero-phonon-line (ZPL) - at detunings that are up to two orders of magnitude larger than the fluorescence linewidth of the bare emitter and reach into the near-infrared. Our results evidence a regime where the emission linewidth is dominated by the excited state lifetime, as required for indistinguishable photon emission, baring relevance to the development of nanoscale, ultrafast quantum light sources and to the quest toward single-molecule cavity-QED. We propose a quantum analogue of the Huygens clock, in which the phases of two spins achieve synchronization through their interaction with a shared environment. The environment functions analogously to the escapement mechanism in a mechanical clock, regulating the gear train and permitting the advancement of timing in discrete intervals. In our proposed model, the relative phase of the two spins become synchronized through interaction with a mutual, correlated, environment. We show that for a system of qubits, several arguments can be made that significantly reduce the cardinality of the set of allowed measurements and, hence, the complexity of the problem. We present a numerically efficient method to calculate the degree of quantumness that exists in the correlations of our final density matrix. This method also provides a tight upper bound for when the system is described by rank-3 and rank-4 density matrices.

A Laurent polynomial in two variables is tempered if its edge polynomials are cyclotomic. Variation of coefficients leads to a family of smooth complete genus $g$ curves carrying a canonical algebraic $K_2$-class over a $g$-dimensional base $S$, hence to an extension of admissible variations of MHS (or normal function) on $S$. We prove that the $\mathbb{R}$-split locus of this extension is finite. We investigate the transmission of scalar, electromagnetic, and linearized odd-parity gravitational waves in a static spacetime characterized by a spherical distribution of matter in the form of thin concentric equidistant shells of equal mass. These shells connect Schwarzschild spacetimes of different masses between themselves, and they satisfy the Israel junction conditions with a polytropic-type equation of state for the surface energy-momentum tensor. We assume that the central region has zero mass, and we verify that the resulting spacetime is stable with respect to small perturbations of the shell radii as long as the gravitational field is sufficiently weak. We focus on the transmission of monochromatic waves emitted from the center and propagating through a succession of $N$ shells. To this purpose, we neglect the self-gravity of the waves and solve the Regge-Wheeler equation in the weak field limit of the background field. Analytical expressions for the transmission and reflection coefficients are obtained and their dependency on the frequency, the number of shells and their mutual distance is analyzed. In particular, in the high-frequency limit, we observe that the reflection coefficient decays with the fourth power of the frequency. Increasing the number of shells initially produces oscillations in the transmission coefficient; however, as $N$ grows, this coefficient rapidly stabilizes at a constant positive value. The metal mass fractions of gas giants are a powerful tool to constrain their formation mechanisms and evolution. The metal content is inferred by comparing mass and radius measurements with interior structure and evolution models. In the midst of the JWST, CHEOPS, TESS, and the forthcoming PLATO era, we are at the brink of obtaining unprecedented precision in radius, age and atmospheric metallicity measurements. To prepare for this wealth of data, we present the GAS gianT modeL for Interiors (GASTLI), an easy-to-use, publicly available Python package. The code is optimized to rapidly calculate mass-radius relations, and radius and luminosity thermal evolution curves for a variety of envelope compositions and core mass fractions. Its applicability spans planets with masses $17 \ M_{\oplus} < M < 6 \ M_{Jup}$, and equilibrium temperatures $T_{eq} < 1000$ K. The interior model is stratified in a core composed of water and rock, and an envelope constituted by H/He and metals (water). The interior is coupled to a grid of self-consistent, cloud-free atmospheric models to determine the atmospheric and boundary interior temperature, as well as the contribution of the atmosphere to the total radius. We successfully validate GASTLI by comparing it to previous work and data of the Solar System's gas giants and Neptune. We also test GASTLI on the Neptune-mass exoplanet HAT-P-26 b, finding a bulk metal mass fraction between 0.60-0.78 and a core mass of 8.5-14.4 $M_{\oplus}$. Finally, we explore the impact of different equations of state and assumptions, such as C/O ratio and transit pressure, in the estimation of bulk metal mass fraction. These differences between interior models entail a change in radius of up to 2.5% for Jupiter-mass planets, but more than 10\% for Neptune-mass. Experiments are a commonly used method of research in software engineering (SE). Researchers report their experiments following detailed guidelines. However, researchers do not, in the field of test-driven development (TDD) at least, specify how they operationalized the response variables and the measurement process. This article has three aims: (i) identify the response variable operationalization components in TDD experiments that study external quality; (ii) study their influence on the experimental results;(ii) determine if the experiment reports describe the measurement process components that have an impact on the results. Sequential mixed method. The first part of the research adopts a quantitative approach applying a statistical an\'alisis (SA) of the impact of the operationalization components on the experimental results. The second part follows on with a qualitative approach applying a systematic mapping study (SMS). The test suites, intervention types and measurers have an influence on the measurements and results of the SA of TDD experiments in SE. The test suites have a major impact on both the measurements and the results of the experiments. The intervention type has less impact on the results than on the measurements. While the measurers have an impact on the measurements, this is not transferred to the experimental results. On the other hand, the results of our SMS confirm that TDD experiments do not usually report either the test suites, the test case generation method, or the details of how external quality was measured. A measurement protocol should be used to assure that the measurements made by different measurers are similar. It is necessary to report the test cases, the experimental task and the intervention type in order to be able to reproduce the measurements and SA, as well as to replicate experiments and build dependable families of experiments.

Terahertz (THz) radiation, spanning from 0.3 to 3x10^12 Hz, fills the crucial gap between the microwave and infrared spectral range. THz technology has found applications in various fields, from imaging and sensing to telecommunication and biosensing. However, the full potential of these applications is often hindered by the need for precise control and manipulation of the frequency and polarization state, which typically requires external THz modulators. Here, we demonstrate a hybrid THz source that overcomes this limitation. Our device consists of two THz emitters integrated into one single device, enabling pulse shaping and chirality control of the emitted radiation without additional external components. The two sources are a spintronic emitter and a semiconductor photoconductive antenna (PCA). Using a combination of dual-wavelength excitation, allowing for control of the relative time delay between the two laser excitation pulses, and tuning external parameters for each emitter (i.e., biasing voltage for the PCA and magnetic field for the spintronic THz emitter) enables precise control of the mixing of the two signals and results in frequency, polarization, and chirality control of the overall THz radiation. This on-chip hybrid emitter provides an essential platform for engineered THz radiation with wide-ranging potential applications.

PLATO (PLAnetary Transits and Oscillations of stars) is ESA's M3 mission designed to detect and characterise extrasolar planets and perform asteroseismic monitoring of a large number of stars. PLATO will detect small planets (down to <2 R_(Earth)) around bright stars (<11 mag), including terrestrial planets in the habitable zone of solar-like stars. With the complement of radial velocity observations from the ground, planets will be characterised for their radius, mass, and age with high accuracy (5 %, 10 %, 10 % for an Earth-Sun combination respectively). PLATO will provide us with a large-scale catalogue of well-characterised small planets up to intermediate orbital periods, relevant for a meaningful comparison to planet formation theories and to better understand planet evolution. It will make possible comparative exoplanetology to place our Solar System planets in a broader context. In parallel, PLATO will study (host) stars using asteroseismology, allowing us to determine the stellar properties with high accuracy, substantially enhancing our knowledge of stellar structure and evolution. The payload instrument consists of 26 cameras with 12cm aperture each. For at least four years, the mission will perform high-precision photometric measurements. Here we review the science objectives, present PLATO's target samples and fields, provide an overview of expected core science performance as well as a description of the instrument and the mission profile at the beginning of the serial production of the flight cameras. PLATO is scheduled for a launch date end 2026. This overview therefore provides a summary of the mission to the community in preparation of the upcoming operational phases.

Planets orbiting binary systems are relatively unexplored compared to those around single stars. Detections of circumbinary planets and planetary systems offer a first detailed view into our understanding of circumbinary planet formation and dynamical evolution. The BEBOP (Binaries Escorted by Orbiting Planets) radial velocity survey plays a special role in this adventure as it focuses on eclipsing single-lined binaries with an FGK dwarf primary and M dwarf secondary allowing for the highest-radial velocity precision using the HARPS and SOPHIE spectrographs. We obtained 4512 high-resolution spectra for the 179 targets in the BEBOP survey which we used to derive the stellar atmospheric parameters using both equivalent widths and spectral synthesis. We furthermore derive stellar masses, radii, and ages for all targets. With this work, we present the first homogeneous catalogue of precise stellar parameters for these eclipsing single-lined binaries., Comment: accepted for publication in MNRAS

We demonstrate coherent control of a three-electron exchange-only spin qubit with the quantum dots arranged in a close-packed triangular geometry. The device is tuned to confine one electron in each quantum dot, as evidenced by pairwise charge stability diagrams. Time-domain control of the exchange coupling is demonstrated and qubit performance is characterized using blind randomized benchmarking, with an average single-qubit gate fidelity F = 99.84%. The compact triangular device geometry can be readily scaled to larger two-dimensional quantum dot arrays with high connectivity.

Datasets are critical for scientific research, playing an important role in replication, reproducibility, and efficiency. Researchers have recently shown that datasets are becoming more important for science to function properly, even serving as artifacts of study themselves. However, citing datasets is not a common or standard practice in spite of recent efforts by data repositories and funding agencies. This greatly affects our ability to track their usage and importance. A potential solution to this problem is to automatically extract dataset mentions from scientific articles. In this work, we propose to achieve such extraction by using a neural network based on a Bi-LSTM-CRF architecture. Our method achieves F1 = 0.885 in social science articles released as part of the Rich Context Dataset. We discuss the limitations of the current datasets and propose modifications to the model to be done in the future.

Obtaining funding is an important part of becoming a successful scientist. Junior faculty spend a great deal of time finding the right agencies and programs that best match their research profile. But what are the factors that influence the best publication--grant matching? Some universities might employ pre-award personnel to understand these factors, but not all institutions can afford to hire them. Historical records of publications funded by grants can help us understand the matching process and also help us develop recommendation systems to automate it. In this work, we present \textsc{GotFunding} (Grant recOmmendaTion based on past FUNDING), a recommendation system trained on National Institutes of Health's (NIH) grant--publication records. Our system achieves a high performance (NDCG@1 = 0.945) by casting the problem as learning to rank. By analyzing the features that make predictions effective, our results show that the ranking considers most important 1) the year difference between publication and grant grant, 2) the amount of information provided in the publication, and 3) the relevance of the publication to the grant. We discuss future improvements of the system and an online tool for scientists to try.

Scientist learn early on how to cite scientific sources to support their claims. Sometimes, however, scientists have challenges determining where a citation should be situated -- or, even worse, fail to cite a source altogether. Automatically detecting sentences that need a citation (i.e., citation worthiness) could solve both of these issues, leading to more robust and well-constructed scientific arguments. Previous researchers have applied machine learning to this task but have used small datasets and models that do not take advantage of recent algorithmic developments such as attention mechanisms in deep learning. We hypothesize that we can develop significantly accurate deep learning architectures that learn from large supervised datasets constructed from open access publications. In this work, we propose a Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network with attention mechanism and contextual information to detect sentences that need citations. We also produce a new, large dataset (PMOA-CITE) based on PubMed Open Access Subset, which is orders of magnitude larger than previous datasets. Our experiments show that our architecture achieves state of the art performance on the standard ACL-ARC dataset ($F_{1}=0.507$) and exhibits high performance ($F_{1}=0.856$) on the new PMOA-CITE. Moreover, we show that it can transfer learning across these datasets. We further use interpretable models to illuminate how specific language is used to promote and inhibit citations. We discover that sections and surrounding sentences are crucial for our improved predictions. We further examined purported mispredictions of the model, and uncovered systematic human mistakes in citation behavior and source data. This opens the door for our model to check documents during pre-submission and pre-archival procedures. We make this new dataset, the code, and a web-based tool available to the community.

Polariton condensation relies on the macroscopic occupation of the lowest-energy polariton state beyond a critical density. The mechanisms driving the occupation and depopulation of this state all rely on multi-particle scattering, whose dynamics determine the extent to which condensates can form spontaneously. To pinpoint many-body processes hindering polariton condensation in two-dimensional metal-halide semiconductors, we examine the exciton-polariton dynamics in a Fabry-P\'erot microcavity over timescales involving polariton ($\bm{\ll 1}$\,ps) and exciton scattering ($\bm{\gg 1}$\,ps). We find enhanced nonlinear exciton-exciton interactions in the microcavity versus the bare semiconductor and ultrafast polariton scattering depopulating the lowest-energy polariton state. We posit that the complex scattering landscape between the exciton reservoir and polaritons limits the formation of polariton condensates in these semiconductors, and we discuss the generality of our conclusions for highly polar materials in which the lattice mediates multi-particle correlations., Comment: 27 pages, 6 figures, plus supplementary material document. Neural reconstruction approaches are rapidly emerging as the preferred representation for 3D scenes, but their limited editability is still posing a challenge. In this work, we propose an approach for 3D scene inpainting -- the task of coherently replacing parts of the reconstructed scene with desired content. Scene inpainting is an inherently ill-posed task as there exist many solutions that plausibly replace the missing content. A good inpainting method should therefore not only enable high-quality synthesis but also a high degree of control. Based on this observation, we focus on enabling explicit control over the inpainted content and leverage a reference image as an efficient means to achieve this goal. Specifically, we introduce RefFusion, a novel 3D inpainting method based on a multi-scale personalization of an image inpainting diffusion model to the given reference view. The personalization effectively adapts the prior distribution to the target scene, resulting in a lower variance of score distillation objective and hence significantly sharper details. Our framework achieves state-of-the-art results for object removal while maintaining high controllability. Enhancing semantic grounding abilities in Vision-Language Models (VLMs) often involves collecting domain-specific training data, refining the network architectures, or modifying the training recipes. In this work, we venture into an orthogonal direction and explore whether VLMs can improve their semantic grounding by "receiving" feedback, without requiring in-domain data, fine-tuning, or modifications to the network architectures. We systematically analyze this hypothesis using a feedback mechanism composed of a binary signal. We find that if prompted appropriately, VLMs can utilize feedback both in a single step and iteratively, showcasing the potential of feedback as an alternative technique to improve grounding in internet-scale VLMs. Furthermore, VLMs, like LLMs, struggle to self-correct errors out-of-the-box. However, we find that this issue can be mitigated via a binary verification mechanism. Finally, we explore the potential and limitations of amalgamating these findings and applying them iteratively to automatically enhance VLMs' grounding performance, showing grounding accuracy consistently improves using automated feedback across all models in all settings investigated. Overall, our iterative framework improves semantic grounding in VLMs by more than 15 accuracy points under noise-free feedback and up to 5 accuracy points under a simple automated binary verification mechanism. Niobium carbide (NbC) is a high-field Type II superconductor with a critical temperature ($T_C$) of 11.1 K, just above that of pure Nb ($T_C = 9$ K). Downsizing NbC to the nanoparticle scale introduces significant alterations in its critical field and/or the superconducting temperature. Here we report on superconducting NbC nanoparticles with $T_C \approx$ 10 K synthesized by laser ablation in acetone, using the lens-target distance (laser fluence) and centrifugation as control parameters of the particle size. X-ray diffraction analyses certified the cubic NbC phase and electron microscopy images revealed spherical particles with average size near 8 nm, with no apparent size dependence on fluence. Besides, magnetization curves exhibited magnetic loops featuring a saturation magnetization around $10^{-3} \mu_B$/molecule along with a small and typical superconducting loop for all investigated samples. We also observed a suppression of the diamagnetic behavior below $T_C$ upon decreasing laser fluence. Moreover, all samples exhibited a weak electron spin resonance (ESR) Curie-like signal at $g\approx2.0$ probably associated with localized defects in the particle's surface. The intriguing coexistence of superconductivity and magnetism in nanoparticles has recently garnered significant research attention. This complex scenario and unique properties are due to the substantial increase of surface-to-volume ratio in these superconducting NbC nanoparticles and further investigation would be crucial to unveil novel material properties and shed new light on our understanding of the superconducting phenomenon in this new morphology.

As the academic consortia members of the EU Horizon project SONATA ("Situation-aware OrchestratioN of AdapTive Architecture"), we respond to the workshop call for "Office Wellbeing by Design: Don't Stand for Anything Less" by proposing the "Adaptive Workplace" concept. In essence, our vision aims to adapt a workplace to the ever-changing needs of individual occupants, instead of that occupants are expected to adapt to their workplace.

We report the confirmation and mass determination of a mini-Neptune transiting the M3.5 V star TOI-4438 (G 182-34) every 7.44 days. A transit signal was detected with NASA's TESS space mission in the sectors 40, 52, and 53. In order to validate the planet TOI-4438 b and to determine the system properties, we combined TESS data with high-precision radial velocity measurements from the CARMENES spectrograph, spanning almost one year, and ground-based transit photometry. We found that TOI-4438 b has a radius of Rb = 2.52 +/- 0.13 R_Earth (5% precision), which together with a mass of Mb=5.4 +/- 1.1 M_Earth (20% precision), results in a bulk density of rho = 1.85+0.51-0.44 g cm-3 (28% precision), aligning the discovery with a volatile-rich planet. Our interior structure retrieval with a pure water envelope yields a minimum water mass fraction of 46% (1-sigma). TOI-4438 b is a volatile-rich mini-Neptune with likely H/He mixed with molecules, such as water, CO_2, and CH_4. The primary star has a J-band magnitude of 9.7, and the planet has a high transmission spectroscopy metric (TSM) of 136 +/- 13. Taking into account the relatively warm equilibrium temperature of T_eq = 435 +/- 15 K, and the low activity level of its host star, TOI-4438 b is one of the most promising mini-Neptunes around an M dwarf for transmission spectroscopy studies., Comment: Accepted for publication on Astronomy & Astrophysics

Even though sub-Neptunes likely represent the most common outcome of planet formation, their natures remain poorly understood. In particular, planets near 1.5-2.5$\,R_\oplus$ often have bulk densities that can be explained equally well with widely different compositions and interior structures, resulting in grossly divergent implications for their formation. Here, we present the full 0.6-5.2$\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ JWST NIRISS/SOSS+NIRSpec/G395H transmission spectrum of the 2.2$\,R_\oplus$ TOI-270d ($4.78\,M_\oplus$, $T_\mathrm{eq}$=350-380 K), delivering unprecedented sensitivity for atmospheric characterization in the sub-Neptune regime. We detect five vibrational bands of CH$_4$ at 1.15, 1.4, 1.7, 2.3, and 3.3$\,\mu$m (9.4$\sigma$), the signature of CO$_2$ at 4.3$\,\mu$m (4.8$\sigma$), water vapor (2.5$\sigma$), and potential signatures of SO$_2$ at 4.0$\,\mu \mathrm{m}$ and CS$_2$ at 4.6$\,\mu\mathrm{m}$. Intriguingly, we find an overall highly metal-rich atmosphere, with a mean molecular weight of $5.47_{-1.14}^{+1.25}$. We infer an atmospheric metal mass fraction of $58_{-12}^{+8}\%$ and a C/O of $0.47_{-0.19}^{+0.16}$, indicating that approximately half the mass of the outer envelope is in high-molecular-weight volatiles (H$_2$O, CH$_4$, CO, CO$_2$) rather than H$_2$/He. We introduce a sub-Neptune classification scheme and identify TOI-270d as a "miscible-envelope sub-Neptune" in which H$_2$/He is well-mixed with the high-molecular-weight volatiles in a miscible supercritical metal-rich envelope. For a fully miscible envelope, we conclude that TOI-270d's interior is $90_{-4}^{+3}\,$wt$\,\%$ rock/iron, indicating that it formed as a rocky planet that accreted a few wt % of H$_2$/He, with the overall envelope metal content explained by magma-ocean/envelope reactions without the need for significant ice accretion.
