Assessing the fate of contaminants in the environment requires a deep understanding of intrinsic adsorption mechanisms on natural minerals such as Fe-oxyhydroxides. In this study, we proposed an innovative approach to probe site heterogeneities on the goethite surface by comparing the adsorption behavior of rare earth elements (REEs, including Sc, Y, and all lanthanides; Ln) except Pm, as well as Th and U. A surface loading-dependent adsorption of Ln and Y was observed, with a shift from (i) preferential middle to heavy REE adsorption and (ii) limited to substantial fractionation between Y and Ho as the loading increased. These observations are likely attributable to the formation of strong and weak complexes onto the (021) and (110)/(100) goethite faces at low and high loadings, respectively. Additionally, Ce-anomaly, characteristic of Ce(III) partial oxidation to Ce(IV), was observed only at high loading. By drawing an analogy with Th(IV) and Sc(III), Ce(IV) is expected to outcompete Ln(III) and Y adsorptions and stabilize primarily at the strong sites on the (021) face, even under conditions of high loading. The outcome of this study, supported by charge distribution-multisite complexation (CD-MUSIC) calculation, provides new insights into the impact of facet-dependent adsorption and redox processes on Fe-oxyhydroxides.

Characterizing radioactive aerosol particles released from actinide metals on fires represents a pivotal process in nuclear emergency response. However, the precise characterization of these particles and the deep understanding of their formation mechanism remain a daunting challenge due to the lack of in-situ measurement techniques. We presented the first real-time investigation of respirable particles with the size ranging from 2 nm to 10 μm, emitted from the combustion of cerium metal (CM) as surrogate for actinide counterparts. The evolution of such particles was revealed by the methodology combining scanning mobility particle sizer and optical particle sizer, showing the consistent generation of multimodal ultrafine particles with diameters of 2-100 nm during the combustion reaction. Numerous polydisperse 0.2-0.5 μm accumulated particles and a few 2-10 μm coarse particles were also produced via droplet dispersion and explosion during molten CM self-enhanced combustion. These particles were predominantly composed of CeO 2 and exhibited lognormal distributions. The spherical, aggregated, chain-like and fractured particles implied the evolution of particles including nucleation, coagulation, agglomeration and oxide layer cracking. Comparative analyses of particle size distributions reveal that bulk CM combustion predominantly generated ultrafine particles in the absence of CM droplet dispersion. Advanced used nuclear fuel (UNF) reprocessing strategies are limited by the complex radiochemical separations and engineering required to achieve the separation of actinides (An) from neutron scavenging lanthanides (Ln). The accessibility of the hexavalent oxidation state for the actinides (U - Am) provides a pathway to achieving a group hexavalent actinide separation from the trivalent lanthanides and Cm. The solid oxidant and ion exchanger, sodium bismuthate (NaBiO 3 ), has been demonstrated to quantitatively oxidize and separate Am from trivalent Cm in a column chromatographic system. This work expands on the use of NaBiO 3 chromatography to characterize the adsorption, kinetic, and elution behavior of U, Pu, and Eu. Separation factors over 200 with rapid kinetics were observed at dilute nitric acid concentrations with a complete An/Ln separation achieved in under an hour. Post-detonation nuclear forensics capabilities depend on the ability to rapidly isolate radionuclides to improve measurement quality. In this work an extraction chromatography resin was developed utilizing thenoyltrifluoroacetone and 1-octanol supported on Eichrom prefilter resin. The resin was tested in nitric and hydrochloric acid matrices. In nitric acid the resin was able to extract zirconium, while in hydrochloric acid matrices it was possible to extract iron and gallium. Two new extraction chromatographic resins (ECRs) were prepared by impregnating two exotic diglycolamide (DGA) ligands (having three or four DGA moieties tethered to aza-crown ether scaffolds) dissolved in an ionic liquid onto an inert solid support. A room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) was used for enhancing the performance of the ECRs. The ECR containing triaza-9-crown-3 functionalized with three DGA moieties (TAM-3-DGA), and tetraaza-12-crown-4 tethered with four DGA arms (TAM-4-DGA) were evaluated for the separation of Am 3+ and Pu 4+ from nitric acid solutions. The resin capacity for Eu 3+ was 9.52 mg/g and 7.24 mg/g for TAM-3-DGA and TAM-4-DGA resins, respectively. Similarly, the resin capacity for Pu 4+ was 7.44 mg/g and 5.72 mg/g for TAM-3-DGA and TAM-4-DGA resins, respectively. These maximum loading values corresponded to the formation of a 1:1 metal/ligand complex for the Eu 3+ ion and a 1:2 metal/ligand complex for the Pu 4+ ion. The sorption of Eu 3+ and Pu 4+ on the resins followed a chemisorption phenomenon on both resins. The chemical characterization of the heaviest elements at the farthest reach of the periodic table (PT) and the classification of these elements in the PT are undoubtedly crucial and challenging subjects in chemical and physical sciences. The elucidation of the influence of relativistic effects on their outermost electronic configuration is also a critical and fascinating aspect. However, the heaviest elements with atomic numbers Z ≳ 100 must be produced at accelerators using nuclear reactions of heavy ions and target materials. Therefore, production rates for these elements are low, and their half-lives are as short as a few seconds to a few minutes; they are usually available in a quantity of only a few atoms at a time. Here, we review some highlighted studies on heavy actinide and light transactinide chemical characterization performed at the Japan Atomic Energy Agency tandem accelerator facility. We discuss briefly the prospects for future studies of the heaviest elements.

Minor actinides are major contributors to the long-term radiotoxicity of nuclear fuels and other radioactive wastes. In this context, understanding their interactions with natural chelators and minerals is key to evaluating their transport behavior in the environment. The lanmodulin family of metalloproteins is produced by ubiquitous bacteria and Methylorubrum extorquens lanmodulin (LanM) was recently identified as one of nature's most selective chelators for trivalent f-elements. Herein, we investigated the behavior of neptunium, americium, and curium in the presence of LanM, carbonate ions, and common minerals (calcite, montmorillonite, quartz, and kaolinite). We show that LanM's aqueous complexes with Am(III) and Cm(III) remain stable in carbonate-bicarbonate solutions. Furthermore, the sorption of Am(III) to these minerals is strongly impacted by LanM, while Np(V) sorption is not. With calcite, even a submicromolar concentration of LanM leads to a significant reduction in the Am(III) distribution coefficient ( K d , from >10 4 to ∼10 2 mL/g at pH 8.5), rendering it even more mobile than Np(V). Thus, LanM-type chelators can potentially increase the mobility of trivalent actinides and lanthanide fission products under environmentally relevant conditions. Monitoring biological chelators, including metalloproteins, and their biogenerators should therefore be considered during the evaluation of radioactive waste repository sites and the risk assessment of contaminated sites.

The use of actinides for medical, scientific and technological purposes has gained momentum in the recent years. This creates a need to understand their interactions with biomolecules, both at the interface and as they become complexed. Calculation of the Gibbs binding energies of the ions to biomolecules, i. e., the Gibbs energy change associated with a transfer of an ion from the water phase to its binding site, could help to understand the actinides' toxicities and to design agents that bind them with high affinities. To this end, there is a need to obtain accurate reference values for actinide hydration, that for most actinides are not available from experiment. In this study, a set of ionic radii is developed that enables future calculations of binding energies for Pu 3+ and five actinides with renewed scientific and technological interest: Ac 3+ , Am 3+ , Cm 3+ , Bk 3+ and Cf 3+ . Reference hydration energies were calculated using quantum chemistry and ion solvation theory and agree well for all ions except Ac 3+ , where ion solvation theory seems to underestimate the magnitude of the Gibbs hydration energy. During the wide utilization of the actinides in medicine, energy, military, and other fields, internal contaminations can profoundly endanger human health and public security. Chelating decorporation agents are the most effective therapies to reduce internal contamination that includes radiological and chemical toxicities. This review introduces the structures of chelating decorporation agents including inorganic salts, polyaminocarboxylic acids, peptides, polyphosphonates, siderophores, calixarenes, polyethylenimines, and fullerenes, and highlights ongoing advances in their designs and mechanisms. However, there are still numerous challenges that block their applications including coordination properties, pharmacokinetic properties, oral bioavailability, limited timing of administration, and toxicity. Europium, as an easy-to-study analog of the trivalent actinides, is of particular importance for studying the behavior of lanthanides and actinides in the environment. Since different soil organisms can influence the migration behavior of these elements, a detailed knowledge of these interaction mechanisms is important. The aim of this study was to investigate the interaction of mycelia of selected wood-inhabiting (S. commune, P. ostreatus, L. tigrinus) and soil-inhabiting fungi (L. naucinus) with Eu(III). In addition to determining the Eu(III) complexes in the sorption solution, the formed Eu(III) fungal species were characterized using scanning transmission electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, chemical microscopy in combination with the time-resolved laser-induced fluorescence spectroscopy. Our data show that S. commune exhibited significantly higher Eu(III) binding capacity in comparison to the other fungi. Depending on fungal strain, the metal was immobilized on the cell surface, in the cell membranes, and within the membranes of various organelles, or in the cytoplasm in some cases. During the bioassociation process two different Eu(III) fungal species were formed in all investigated fungal strain. The phosphate groups of organic ligands were identified as being important functional groups to bind Eu(III) and thus immobilize the metal in the fungal matrix. Speciation of actinides, and more particularly bioligand-binding ability, influences in vivo behavior. Understanding these interactions is essential for estimation of radiological dose and improvement of decorporation strategies for accidentally contaminated victims. Because the handling of actinides imposes overwhelming difficulties, in vitro assays carried out in physiological conditions are lacking and data regarding such interactions are scarce. In this study, we used a bi-compartmental and dynamic assay, providing physiological conditions (presence of inorganic ions, pH, temperature) to explore interactions between the actinides plutonium (Pu) and americium (Am) and endogenous (proteins transferrin and ferritin) or exogenous ligands (the chelating agent diethylenetriaminpentaacetic acid, DTPA). In this assay, an agarose gel represents the retention compartment of actinides and a dynamic fluid phase, the transfer compartment. The proportion of actinides transferred from static to dynamic phase reflects interactions between Pu/Am and various ligands. The results show differences in the formation of actinide-protein or actinide-DTPA complexes in physiologically relevant media depending on which ligand is present and where. We observed differential behavior for Pu and Am similar to in vivo studies. Thus, our assay may be used to determine the ability of various actinides to interact with specific proteins or with drug candidates for decorporation in complex physiologically relevant environments.

The epithelial cell plays a key role in the transfer of radionuclides from lungs to blood following pulmonary exposure. The present study was designed to evaluate the transfer across human lung epithelial cells of various actinides (plutonium, americium and uranium), the influence of the physicochemical properties of plutonium compounds and of the chelating agent diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid (DTPA). To address this question, Calu-3 cells grown in a bicameral culture system were used. The integrity of the epithelial barrier was evaluated by measuring transepithelial electrical resistance (TEER) and the passage of a fluorescent marker, lucifer yellow. Activity measurement in basal compartment following periodic collection of culture medium was made from 2 h to seven days. To facilitate data handling and analysis, the statistical tool STATBIODIS was used. The results indicate differences in transfer for the different elements, and according to Pu physicochemical properties. Though to various extents, the chelating agent DTPA always increased the transfer of Pu and Am across the epithelial cells, without altering the integrity of the epithelial barrier. This in vitro cell culture model, by mimicking translocation of actinides from lungs to blood, can represent a valuable tool to further understand the underlying mechanisms and properties controlling this process., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. A dialkyl amide with branched alkyl group, viz. N,N-di(2-ethylhexyl)-propionamide (D2EHPrA) was used as the organic extractant in an extraction chromatographic resin prepared for the first time and evaluated for the separation of uranium from acidic feeds. The distribution coefficient measurements, carried out at varying HNO 3 concentrations, indicated an increase in the UO 2 2+ ion sorption with increasing nitric acid concentration. The UO 2 2+ ion sorption kinetics and sorption isotherms with this resin were investigated in details. The column studies indicated that 8.3 mg of uranium could be loaded on a 2.1 cm 3 column bed volume containing 0.35 g resin. Batch distribution data for other actinides such as Np 4+ and Pu 4+ indicated that the resin can also be used for effective separation of these metal ions from acidic feeds. Though the resin showed effectiveness for Np and Pu, detailed investigations dealing with macro concentrations of metal ions (in gm quantities) were restricted to uranium only due to hazardous nature of plutonium and limited availability of neptunium. Lanthanides and actinides are used in a wide variety of applications, from energy production to life sciences. To address toxicity issues due to the chemical, and often radiological, properties of these elements, methods to quantify and recover them from industrial waste are necessary. When used in biomedicine, lanthanides and actinides are incorporated in compounds that show promising therapeutic and/or bioimaging properties, but lack robust strategies to target cancer and other pathologies. Furthermore, current decorporation protocols to respond to accidental actinide exposure rely on intravenous injections of soluble chelating agents, which are inefficient for treatment of inhaled radionuclides trapped in lungs. In recent years, nanoparticles have emerged as powerful tools in both industry and clinical settings. Because some inorganic nanoparticles are sensitive to external stimuli, such as light and magnetic fields, they can be used as building blocks for sensitive bioassays and separation techniques. In addition, nanoparticles can be functionalized with multiple ligands and act as carriers for selective delivery of therapeutic and contrast agents. This review summarizes and discusses recent progress on the use of nanoparticles in lanthanide and actinide chemistry. We examine different types of nanoparticles based on composition, functionalization, and properties, and we critically analyze their performance in a comparative mode. Our focus is two-pronged, including the nanoparticles free of lanthanides and actinides that are used for the detection, separation, or decorporation of f-block elements, as well as the nanoparticles that enhance the inherent properties of lanthanides and actinides for therapeutics, imaging and catalysis.

Even 155 years after their first synthesis, Schiff bases continue to surprise inorganic chemists. Schiff-base ligands have played a major role in the development of modern coordination chemistry because of their relevance to a number of interdisciplinary research fields. The chemistry, properties and applications of transition metal and lanthanoid complexes with Schiff-base ligands are now quite mature. On the contrary, the coordination chemistry of Schiff bases with actinoid (5f-metal) ions is an emerging area, and impressive research discoveries have appeared in the last 10 years or so. The chemistry of actinoid ions continues to attract the intense interest of many inorganic groups around the world. Important scientific challenges are the understanding the basic chemistry associated with handling and recycling of nuclear materials; investigating the redox properties of these elements and the formation of complexes with unusual metal oxidation states; discovering materials for the recovery of trans -{U VI O 2 } 2+ from the oceans; elucidating and manipulating actinoid-element multiple bonds; discovering methods to carry out multi-electron reactions; and improving the 5f-metal ions' potential for activation of small molecules. The study of 5f-metal complexes with Schiff-base ligands is a currently "hot" topic for a variety of reasons, including issues of synthetic inorganic chemistry, metalosupramolecular chemistry, homogeneous catalysis, separation strategies for nuclear fuel processing and nuclear waste management, bioinorganic and environmental chemistry, materials chemistry and theoretical chemistry. This almost-comprehensive review, covers aspects of synthetic chemistry, reactivity and the properties of dinuclear and oligonuclear actinoid complexes based on Schiff-base ligands. Our work focuses on the significant advances that have occurred since 2000, with special attention on recent developments. The review is divided into eight sections (chapters). After an introductory section describing the organization of the scientific information, Sections 2 and 3 deal with general information about Schiff bases and their coordination chemistry, and the chemistry of actinoids, respectively. Section 4 highlights the relevance of Schiff bases to actinoid chemistry. Sections 5-7 are the "main menu" of the scientific meal of this review. The discussion is arranged according the actinoid (only for Np, Th and U are Schiff-base complexes known). Sections 5 and 7 are further arranged into parts according to the oxidation states of Np and U, respectively, because the coordination chemistry of these metals is very much dependent on their oxidation state. Two novel extraction chromatographic resins (EC), termed as RL-1 and RL-2, were prepared by impregnating two benzene-centered tripodal iglycolamide ligands (Bz-T-DGA) containing different spacer groups where the ligands are termed as L-1 and L-2, respectively. They were employed for the uptake of actinide and fission product ions, viz. Am 3+ , Eu 3+ , UO 2 2+ , Np 4+ , Pu 4+ , Sr 2+ , and Cs + , from acidic feeds. Weight distribution coefficient (K d ) values were measured by the batch method and the loaded metal ions were back extracted using a 0.01 M EDTA solution at pH 4. Kinetic modeling of the sorption data of Am(III) on both resins suggested pseudo-second order rate kinetics with rate constants of 1.68 × 10 -6 and 2.47 × 10 -6 g/cpm.min for the resins containing L-1 and L-2, respectively. Sorption isotherm studies indicated the Langmuir monolayer chemisorption phenomenon with Eu(III) experimentally determined saturation uptake capacities of 6.02 ± 0.11 and 5.49 ± 0.14 mg per g of RL-1 and RL-2 resins, respectively. As the batch uptake study results appeared encouraging, column studies were also carried out using both resins. The resin reusability data indicated a marginal change in the K d values for the RL-1 resin up to three repeat runs beyond which a steady decrease of the K d value was seen. Enterobactin (Ent) is a typical siderophore with strong iron affinity. Its dynamics in its intact form and holo state remains to be studied to understand its role in the in vivo behavior of metal ions and to facilitate its potential application in drug design and environmental remediation. Here, we report molecular dynamics simulations of both Ent enantiomers and their complexes with key actinides (Am3+, Cm3+, Th4+, U4+, Np4+ and Pu4+) to study the folding equilibria of Ent enantiomers and their binding affinity with actinides. For comparison, the ferric cation was also considered. In their neutral state, both enantiomers may exist in their folded and extended states in the aqueous phase with the former more stable owing to the favorable cation-π, π-π, and H-bond interactions. A helicity preference was observed in the folded states of Ent enantiomers, which was solidified when binding with Fe3+ while disrupted when binding with actinides. Upon binding with metal ions, the dynamics of Ent enantiomers exhibited dependence on the metal ions, and appeared to be more flexible in An3+/4+-Ent complexes than in Fe3+-Ent complexes. The conformational analysis and the energy decomposition of M3+/4+-Ent complexes indicated that their distinct conformational variations and dynamic fluxionality are enthalpy driven behaviors and dependent on the nature of the loaded metal ions. The Fe3+-Ent complexes had a more compact conformation, while the relatively loosely bound An3+/4+-Ent complexes allowed solvent water molecules to access the first coordination shell of An3+/4+ and weaken the interaction between An3+/4+ and Ent. This work is expected to enrich our knowledge of the folding equilibria of Ent enantiomers and their An3+/4+-Ent complexes, and contribute to communities that concern the in vivo and in vitro behaviors of Ent enantiomers and actinides.

An automated separation-direct analysis scheme has been developed to determine both the concentration and isotopic composition of a suite of elements down to the low picogram level in a complex silicon-based matrix. With the ultimate goal of performing rapid analysis of materials with non-natural isotopic compositions, RAPID (Rapid Analysis of Post-Irradiation Debris) consists of a high-pressure ion chromatography system directly coupled to an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer. The RAPID method achieves matrix exclusion and direct online analysis of the elementally separated components, yielding precise isotopic compositions for up to 40 elements in less than one hour per sample. When combined with isotope dilution, this approach shows the potential to yield elemental concentrations with low uncertainties, providing a rapid analytical method that encompasses group I and II metals, transition metals, refractory metals, platinum group metals, lanthanides, and actinides. Background: 44Sc is becoming attractive as a PET radionuclide due to its decay characteristics. It can be produced from 44Ca present in natural calcium with 2.08% abundance., Materials and Methods: The targets were mostly prepared from natural CaCO3 or metallic calcium in the form of pellets. After irradiation they were dissolved in 3 M hydrochloric acid and 44Sc was separated from excess of calcium by precipitation of scandium hydroxide using ammonia. Alternatively, targets were dissolved in 11 M hydrochloric acid and 44Sc was separated by extraction chromatography on UTEVA resin. As the next step, in both processes 44Sc was further purified on a cation exchange resin. Initially, the separation procedures were developed with 46Sc as a tracer. Gamma spectrometry with a high purity germanium detector was used to determine the separation efficiency. Finally, the CaCO3 pellet with 99.2% enrichment in 44Ca was activated with protons via 44Ca(p,n)44Sc nuclear reaction., Results: Altogether twenty two irradiations and separations were performed. The working procedures were developed and the quality of separated 44Sc solution was confirmed by radiolabeling of DOTATATE. The chemical purity of the product was sufficient for preclinical experiments. At the end of around 1 hour proton beam irradiation of CaCO3 pellet with 99.2% enrichment in 44Ca the obtained radioactivity of 44Sc was more than 4.8 GBq., Conclusion: 44Sc can be produced inexpensively with adequate yields and radionuclidic purity via 44Ca(p,n)44Sc nuclear reaction in small cyclotrons. The recovery yield in both investigated separation methods was comparable and amounted above 90%. The obtained 44Sc was pure in terms of radionuclide and chemical purity, as shown by the results of peptide radiolabeling.

The results presented in this paper highlight the complexity of adsorption and incorporation processes of Nd with dolomite and significantly improve upon previous work investigating trivalent actinide and lanthanide interactions with dolomite. Both batch and mini column experiments were conducted at variable ionic strength. These data highlight the strong chemisorption of Nd to the dolomite surface (equilibrium K d 's > 3000 mL/g) and suggest that equilibrium adsorption processes may not be affected by ionic strength based on similar results at 0.1 and 5.0 M ionic strength in column breakthrough and equilibrium batch (>5 days) results. Mini column experiments conducted over approximately one year also represent a significant development in measurement of sorption of Nd in the presence of flow as previous large-scale column experiments did not achieve breakthrough likely due to the high loading capacity of dolomite for Nd (up to 240 μg/g). Batch experiments in the absence of flow show that the rate of Nd removal increases with increasing ionic strength (up to 5.0 M) with greater removal at greater ionic strength for a 24 h sampling point. We suggest that the increasing ionic strength induces increased mineral dissolution and re-precipitation caused by changes in activity with ionic strength that lead to increased removal of Nd through co-precipitation processes., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Ltd. An extraction chromatographic resin material containing Aliquat 336 as the liquid anion exchanger extractant and Chromosorb W as the solid support was prepared and tested for the uptake of UO 2 2+ , Np 4+ , Pu 4+ , and Pu 3+ from nitric acid feed solutions. The resin beads were characterized by thermogravimetry/differential thermogravimetry (TG/DTG) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) surface morphology analysis. The uptake trend for the metal ions from 3 M HNO 3 was found to be Pu 4+ >> Np 4+ >> UO 2 2+ > Pu 3+ which clearly followed the trend of their ionic potentials. In view of the significant difference in the uptake of Np 4+ with respect to those of UO 2 2+ and Pu 3+ , a separation scheme was developed for the selective separation of Np from feeds containing U, Np and Pu in nitric acid. As an extension of actinide-rotaxane complexes from uranium to transuranium, we report the first crystal structure of a neptunium-rotaxane complex, NRCP-1, in which an interwoven neptunium(v)-rotaxane coordination network incorporating a mechanically-interlocked [c2]daisy chain unit is promoted via the simultaneous coordination of cucurbituril (CB6) and axle molecules in [2]pseudorotaxane to Np V .

The use of uranium and to a minor extent plutonium as fuel for nuclear energy production or as components in military applications is under increasing public pressure. Uranium is weakly radioactive in its natural isotopy but its chemical toxicity, combined with its large scale industrial utilization, makes it a source of concern in terms of health impact for workers and possibly the general population. Plutonium is an artificial element that exhibits both chemical and radiological toxicities. So far, uranium (under its form uranyl, U(vi)) or plutonium (as Pu(iv)) decorporation or protecting strategies based on molecular design have been of limited efficiency to remove the actinide once incorporated after human exposure. In all cases, after human exposure, plutonium and uranium are retained in main target organs (liver, kidneys) as well as skeleton although they exhibit differences in their biodistribution. Polymers could represent an alternative strategy as their tropism for specific target organs has been reported. We recently reported on the complexation properties of methylcarboxylated polyethyleneimine (PEI-MC) with uranyl. In this report we extend our work to methylphosphonated polyethyleneimine (PEI-MP) and to the comparison between actinide oxidation states +IV (thorium) and +VI (uranyl). As a first step, thorium (Th(iv)) was used as a chemical surrogate of plutonium because of the difficulty in handling the latter in the laboratory. For both cations, U(vi) and Th(iv), the uptake curve of PEI-MP was recorded. The functionalized PEI-MP exhibits a maximum loading capacity comprised of between 0.56 and 0.80 mg of uranium (elemental) and 0.15-0.20 mg of thorium (elemental) per milligram of PEI-MP. Complexation sites of U(vi) and Th(iv) under model conditions close to physiological pH were then characterized with a combination of Fourier transform Infra Red (FT-IR) and Extended X-Ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS). Although both cations exhibit different coordination modes, similar structural parameters with phosphonate functions were obtained. For example, the coordination sites are composed of fully monodentate phosphonate functions of the polymer chains. These physical chemical data represent a necessary basic chemistry approach before envisioning further biological evaluations of PEI-MP polymers towards U(vi) and Pu/Th(iv) contamination.

This work presents a comparison of three autoradiography techniques for imaging biological samples contaminated with actinides: emulsion-based, plastic-based autoradiography and a quantitative digital technique, the iQID camera, based on the numerical analysis of light from a scintillator screen. In radiation toxicology it has been important to develop means of imaging actinide distribution in tissues as these radionuclides may be heterogeneously distributed within and between tissues after internal contamination. Actinide distribution determines which cells are exposed to alpha radiation and is thus potentially critical for assessing absorbed dose. The comparison was carried out by generating autoradiographs of the same biological samples contaminated with actinides with the three autoradiography techniques. These samples were cell preparations or tissue sections collected from animals contaminated with different physico-chemical forms of actinides. The autoradiograph characteristics and the performances of the techniques were evaluated and discussed mainly in terms of acquisition process, activity distribution patterns, spatial resolution and feasibility of activity quantification. The obtained autoradiographs presented similar actinide distribution at low magnification. Out of the three techniques, emulsion autoradiography is the only one to provide a highly-resolved image of the actinide distribution inherently superimposed on the biological sample. Emulsion autoradiography is hence best interpreted at higher magnifications. However, this technique is destructive for the biological sample. Both emulsion- and plastic-based autoradiography record alpha tracks and thus enabled the differentiation between ionized forms of actinides and oxide particles. This feature can help in the evaluation of decorporation therapy efficacy. The most recent technique, the iQID camera, presents several additional features: real-time imaging, separate imaging of alpha particles and gamma rays, and alpha activity quantification. The comparison of these three autoradiography techniques showed that they are complementary and the choice of the technique depends on the purpose of the imaging experiment.

The threat of a dirty bomb which could cause internal contamination has been of major concern for the past decades. Because of their high chemical toxicity and their presence in the nuclear fuel cycle, uranium and neptunium are two actinides of high interest. Calmodulin (CaM) which is a ubiquitous protein present in all eukaryotic cells and is involved in calcium-dependent signaling pathways has a known affinity for uranyl and neptunyl ions. The impact of the complexation of these actinides on the physiological response of the protein remains, however, largely unknown. An isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) was developed to monitor in vitro the enzymatic activity of the phosphodiesterase enzyme which is known to be activated by CaM and calcium. This approach showed that addition of actinyl ions (AnO 2 n+ ), uranyl (UO 2 2+ ) and neptunyl (NpO 2 + ), resulted in a decrease of the enzymatic activity, due to the formation of CaM-actinide complexes, which inhibit the enzyme and alter its interaction with the substrate by direct interaction. Results from dynamic light scattering rationalized this result by showing that the CaM-actinyl complexes adopted a specific conformation different from that of the CaM-Ca 2+ complex. The effect of actinides could be reversed using a hydroxypyridonate actinide decorporation agent (5-LIO(Me-3,2-HOPO)) in the experimental medium demonstrating its capacity to efficiently bind the actinides and restore the calcium-dependent enzyme activation., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier Inc. Luminescent spectroscopy combined with the technique of luminescent probing with rare earth ions (europium, gadolinium, terbium) and an actinide ion (uranyl) was used to differentiate enantiopure and racemic alanine, the simplest chiral proteinogenic amino acid. Using the achiral luminescent probes, small differences between pure L and DL alanine in the solid state were strongly amplified. Based on the observed electronic transitions of the probes, the position of the triplet level of the coordinated alanine was estimated. Formation of homo- and heterochiral complexes between enantiomers of alanine and the metal ions is discussed as a possible mechanism of chiral self-discrimination., (© 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

A windowless silicon (Si) diode (4 mm(2)) was evaluated as alpha particle detector and spectrometer for field measurements. It was irradiated with alpha particles from a (241)Am (2.3 kBq) and a (210)Po (9 kBq) source at source-detector distances (SDD) of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.8 cm. The energy resolution in terms of full width at half maximum was 281, 148 and 113 keV for SDD of 0.5, 1.0 and 1.8 cm, respectively. The minimum detectable activity increased from 0.08 to 0.83 Bq when the SDD increased from 0.5 to 1.8 cm. The detector has the potential for several alpha spectrometric applications, such as monitoring for wound, skin and surface contamination at nuclear fuel facilities, nuclear power plants and facilities handling radioactive waste. There is still an evident need for selective and stable ligands able to separate actinide(III) from lanthanide(III) metal ions in view of the treatment of the accumulated radioactive waste and of the recycling of minor actinides. We have herein demonstrated that hydrophilic 2,6-bis-triazolyl-pyridines are able to strip all actinides in all the different oxidation states from a diglycolamide-containing kerosene solution into an acidic aqueous phase. The ascertained high actinide selectivity, efficiency, extraction kinetics, and chemical/radiolytic stability spotlight this hydrophilic class of ligands as exceptional candidates for advanced separation processes fundamental for closing the nuclear fuel cycle and solving the environmental issues related to the management of existing nuclear waste.

The permeable reactive barrier (PRB) technique has attracted an increasing level of attention for the in situ remediation of contaminated groundwater. In this study, the macroscopic uptake behaviors and microscopic speciation of Eu(III) on hydroxyapatite (HAP) were investigated by a combination of theoretical modeling, batch experiments, powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) fitting, and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS). The underlying removal mechanisms were identified to further assess the application potential of HAP as an effective PRB backfill material. The macroscopic analysis revealed that nearly all dissolved Eu(III) in solution was removed at pH 6.5 within an extremely short reaction time of 5 min. In addition, the thermodynamic calculations, desorption experiments, and PXRD and XAS analyses definitely confirmed the formation of the EuPO4·H2O(s) phase during the process of uptake of dissolved Eu(III) by HAP via the dissolution-precipitation mechanism. A detailed comparison of the present experimental findings and related HAP-metal systems suggests that the relative contribution of precipitation to the total Eu(III) removal increases as the P:Eu ratio decreases. The dosage of HAP-based PRB for the remediation of groundwater polluted by Eu(III) and analogous trivalent actinides [e.g., Am(III) and Cm(III)] should be strictly controlled depending on the dissolved Eu(III) concentration to obtain an optimal P:M (M represents Eu, Am, or Cm) ratio and treatment efficiency.

Human serum albumin (HSA), the most abundant soluble protein in blood plays critical roles in transportation of biomolecules and maintenance of osmotic pressure. In view of increasing applications of lanthanides- and actinides-based materials in nuclear energy, space, industries and medical applications, the risk of exposure with these metal ions is a growing concern for human health. In present study, binding interaction of actinides/lanthanides [thorium: Th(IV), uranium: U(VI), lanthanum: La(III), cerium: Ce(III) and (IV)] with HSA and its structural consequences have been investigated. Ultraviolet-visible, Fourier transform-infrared, Raman, Fluorescence and Circular dichroism spectroscopic techniques were applied to study the site of metal ions interaction, binding affinity determination and the effect of metal ions on protein unfolding and HSA conformation. Results showed that these metal ions interacted with carbonyl (CO..:)/amide(N..-H) groups and induced exposure of aromatic residues of HSA. The fluorescence analysis indicated that the actinide binding altered the microenvironment around Trp214 in the subdomain IIA. Binding affinity of U(VI) to HSA was slightly higher than that of Th(IV). Actinides and Ce(IV) altered the secondary conformation of HSA with a significant decrease of α-helix and an increase of β-sheet, turn and random coil structures, indicating a partial unfolding of HSA. A correlation was observed between metal ion's ability to alter HSA conformation and protein unfolding. Both cationic effects and coordination ability of metal ions seemed to determine the consequences of their interaction with HSA. Present study improves our understanding about the protein interaction of these heavy ions and their impact on its secondary structure. Because of their presence in the nuclear fuel cycle, neptunium and uranium are two actinides of main interest in case of internal contamination. Complexation of U(VI) and Np(V) by the target protein calmodulin (CaM(WT)) was therefore studied herein. Both actinides have two axial oxygen atoms, which, charge aside, makes them very similar structurally wise. This work combines spectroscopy and theoretical density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Structural characterization was performed by extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) at the L(III)-edge for each studied actinide. Models for the binding site of the protein were developed and then refined by using DFT to fit the obtained experimental EXAFS data. The effect of hydrolysis was also considered for both actinides (the uranyl experiment was performed at pH 3 and 6, while the neptunyl experiment was conducted at pH 7 and 9). The effect of the pH variation was apparent on the coordination sphere of the uranyl complexes, while the neptunyl complex characteristics remained stable under both studied conditions. The DFT calculations showed that at near physiological pH the complex formed by CaM(WT) with the neptunium ion is more stable than the one formed with uranyl.

In the case of an accidental nuclear event, contamination of human bodies by actinide elements may occur. Such elements have the particularity to exhibit both radiological and chemical toxicities that may induce severe damages at several levels, depending on the biokinetics of the element. In order to eliminate the actinide elements before they are stored in target organs (liver, kidneys, or bone, depending on the element), sequestering agents must be quickly injected. However, to date, there is still no ideal sequestering agent, despite the recent interest in this topic due to contamination concerns. DTPA (diethylene triamine pentaacetic acid) is currently generating interest for the development of oral or alternative self-administrable forms. Although biokinetics data are mostly available, molecular scale characterization of actinide-DTPA complexes is still scarce. Nevertheless, strong interest is growing in the characterization of An(IV)DTPA(-) complexes at the molecular level because this opens the way for predicting the stability constants of unknown systems or even for developing new analytical strategies aimed at better and more selective decorporation. For this purpose, Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (EXAFS) and Ab Initio Molecular Dynamics (AIMD) investigations were undertaken and compared with capillary electrophoresis (CE) used in a very unusual way. Indeed, it is commonly believed that CE is incapable of extracting structural information. In capillary electrophoresis, the electrophoretic mobility of an ion is a function of its charge and size. Despite very similar ratios, partial separations between An(IV)DTPA(-) species (An(IV) = Th, U, Np, Pu) were obtained. A linear relationship between the electrophoretic mobility and the actinide--oxygen distance calculated by AIMD was evidenced. As an example, the interpolated U-O distances in U(IV)DTPA(-) from CE-ICPMS experiments, EXAFS, AIMD, and the relationship between the stability constants and the ratio z/dAn-O, are all in agreement. This results in the capability to evaluate the stability constants for the formation of Pa(IV)DTPA(-), Am(IV)DTPA(-) or Bk(IV)DTPA(-).

With regard to environmental monitoring of certain nuclear facilities, pentavalent actinides, in particular neptunium and plutonium, play a key role, as the chief soluble, mobile forms of actinides. In the past five years, investigations carried out by hyphenating capillary electrophoresis to ICP-MS (CE-ICP-MS) have allowed a number of hitherto unknown thermodynamic data to be determined for Np(V) and Pu(V) interactions with the chief environmentally abundant anions. For the first time, data were provided for Pu(V) interactions with carbonate, sulfate, oxalate, chloride, and nitrate ions, allowing the Np(V)/Pu(V) analogy to be verified experimentally. Knowledge of Np(V) chemistry, especially in carbonate, and sulfate media, was also refined. The complexation of uranium and europium, in oxidation states +VI and +III, respectively, was investigated with pertinent bio-inorganic systems. Three aspartate-rich pentapeptides with different structural properties were selected for study to rationalize the structure-affinity relationships. Thermodynamic results, crosschecked by both isothermal titration calorimetry and time-resolved laser fluorescence spectroscopy, showed different affinity depending on the peptide for both Eu(III) and U(VI). The thermodynamic aspects were correlated to structural predictions, which were acquired by density functional theory quantum chemical calculations and from IR and extended X-ray absorption fine structure experiments. The combination of these microscopic properties revealed that carbonyl-metal interactions affected the entropy in the case of europium, while the larger uranyl cation was mostly affected by preorganization and steric effects, so that the affinity was enhanced through enthalpy. The approach described here revealed various microscopic aspects governing peptide actinide affinity. Highlighting these mechanisms should certainly contribute to the rational synthesis of higher affinity biomimetic aspartic ligands.

Polyethersulphone (PES) based composite polymeric beads (CPB) containing TODGA (N,N,N',N'-tetraoctyldiglycolamide) as the extractant were prepared by conventional phase inversion technique and were tested for the uptake of actinide ions such as Am(3+), UO2(2+), Pu(4+), Np(4+) and fission product ions such as Eu(3+) and Sr(2+). The CPBs containing 2.5-10wt.% TODGA were characterized by various physical methods and their porosity, size, surface morphology, surface area and the degradation profile by thermogravimetry were analyzed. The batch uptake studies involved kinetics of metal ion sorption, uptake as a function of nitric acid concentration, kinetic modelling and adsorption isotherms and most of the studies involved the Am(3+) ions. The batch saturation sorption capacities for Eu(3+) loading at 3M HNO3 were determined to be 6.6±0.02, 9.1±0.02 and 22.3±0.04mgg(-1) of CRBs with 2.5wt.%, 5wt.% and 10wt.% TODGA, respectively. The sorption isotherm analysis with Langmuir, D-R and Freundlisch isotherms indicated chemisorption monolayer mechanism. Chromatographic studies indicated breakthrough of Eu(3+) (using a solution containing Eu carrier) after about 0.75 bed volume (3.5-4mL). Synthesis of complexes with direct actinide-actinide (An-An) bonding is an experimental 'holy grail' in actinide chemistry. In this work, a series of actinide dimetallocenes An2Cp (Cp(*) = C5(CH3)5, An = Th-Pu) with An-An multiple bonds have been systematically investigated using quantum chemical calculations. The coaxial Cp(*)-An-An-Cp(*) structures are found to be the most stable species for all the dimetallocenes. A Th-Th triple bond is predicted in the Th2Cp complex, and the calculated An-An bond orders decrease across the actinide series from Pa to Pu. The covalent character of the An-An bonds is analyzed by using natural bond orbitals (NBO), molecular orbitals (MO), the quantum theory of atoms in molecules (QTAIM), and electron density difference (EDD). While Th 6d orbitals dominate the Th-Th bonds in Th2Cp, the An 6d-orbital characters decrease and 5f-orbital characters increase for complexes from Pa2Cp to Pu2Cp. All these actinide dimetallocenes are stable in the gas phase relative to the AnCp(*) reference at room temperature. Based on the reactions of AnCp and An, Th2Cp, Pa2Cp and possibly also U2Cp should be accessible as isolated molecules under suitable synthetic conditions. Our results shed light on the molecular design of ligands for stabilizing actinide-actinide multiple bonds.

Synthetic radionuclides, such as the transuranic actinides plutonium, americium, and curium, present severe health threats as contaminants, and understanding the scope of the biochemical interactions involved in actinide transport is instrumental in managing human contamination. Here we show that siderocalin, a mammalian siderophore-binding protein from the lipocalin family, specifically binds lanthanide and actinide complexes through molecular recognition of the ligands chelating the metal ions. Using crystallography, we structurally characterized the resulting siderocalin-transuranic actinide complexes, providing unprecedented insights into the biological coordination of heavy radioelements. In controlled in vitro assays, we found that intracellular plutonium uptake can occur through siderocalin-mediated endocytosis. We also demonstrated that siderocalin can act as a synergistic antenna to sensitize the luminescence of trivalent lanthanide and actinide ions in ternary protein-ligand complexes, dramatically increasing the brightness and efficiency of intramolecular energy transfer processes that give rise to metal luminescence. Our results identify siderocalin as a potential player in the biological trafficking of f elements, but through a secondary ligand-based metal sequestration mechanism. Beyond elucidating contamination pathways, this work is a starting point for the design of two-stage biomimetic platforms for photoluminescence, separation, and transport applications.

A new class of conformationally constrained 7-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-2,3-dicarboxamides (OBDA) of three secondary amines was synthesized, and their extraction behavior for trivalent and tetravalent actinides in HNO3 medium was studied. Amongst the diamides, N,N-bis-2-ethylhexyl substituted diamide showed the best results for actinide extraction. This diamide also exhibited a very low level of extraction for Sr(ii) and Ru(iii) which is desirable, thus providing higher selectivity for actinides. The stripping of extracted metal ions was achieved using 0.1 M oxalic acid for Pu(iv) or pH ∼ 2 solution for Am(iii). Third phase formation was not observed for the OBDA ligand even for a higher concentration of Eu up to 5 g L(-1) with retention of good DEu. The tridentate nature of the OBDA ligand was ascertained by studying the IR and NMR spectra of the Eu(iii) complex with the ligand. The OBDA showed the formation of a mixture of mono- and di-solvated species of Eu(iii) as indicated by the slope analysis method and ESI-MS. Density functional theoretical (DFT) study was carried out to determine the energy optimized structure of the free ligand and its Am(3+) complex.

The first actinide triple helices, including two supramolecular conformational isomers of uranium(VI), have been synthesized with the aid of a flexible V-shaped ligand and a rigid aromatic base. The isomers exhibit an intriguing pH-dependent structural evolution and a kinetically-controlled transformation via a novel conformational rearrangement of the organic base.

Four types of reaction mechanisms for the oxo ligand exchange of monomeric and dimeric neptunyl(VI) hydroxide in aqueous solution were explored computationally using density functional theory (DFT) and ab initio classical molecular dynamics. The obtained results were compared with previous studies on the oxo exchange of uranyl hydroxide, as well as with experiments. It is found that the stable T-shaped [NpO3(OH)3](3-) intermediate is a key species for oxo exchange in the proton transfer in mononuclear Path I and binuclear Path IV, similar to the case of uranyl(VI) hydroxide. Path I is thought to be the preferred oxo exchange mechanism for neptunyl(VI) hydroxide in our calculations, due to the lower activation energy (22.7 and 13.1 kcal mol(-1) for ΔG(‡) and ΔH(‡), respectively) of the overall reaction. Path II via a cis-neptunyl structure assisted by a water molecule might be a competitive channel against Path I with a mononuclear mechanism, owing to a rapid dynamical process occurring in Path II. In Path IV with the binuclear mechanism, oxo exchange is accomplished via the interaction between [NpO2(OH)4](2-) and T-shaped [NpO3(OH)3](3-) with a low activation energy for the rate-determining step, however, the overall energy required to fulfill the reaction is slightly higher than that in mononuclear Path I, suggesting a possible binuclear process in the higher energy region. The chemical bonding evolution along the reaction pathways was discussed by using topological methodologies of the electron localization function (ELF).

Most homogeneous catalysis relies on the design of metal complexes to trap and convert substrates or small molecules to value-added products. Organometallic lanthanide compounds first gave a tantalizing glimpse of their potential for catalytic C-H bond transformations with the selective cleavage of one C-H bond in methane by bis(permethylcyclopentadienyl)lanthanide methyl [(η(5) -C5 Me5 )2 Ln(CH3 )] complexes some 25 years ago. Since then, numerous metal complexes from across the periodic table have been shown to selectively activate hydrocarbon C-H bonds, but the challenges of closing catalytic cycles still remain; many f-block complexes show great potential in this important area of chemistry., (© 2015 WILEY-VCH Verlag GmbH & Co. Synchrotron radiation (SR) based techniques have been utilized with increasing frequency in the past decade to explore the brilliant and challenging sciences of actinide-based materials. This trend is partially driven by the basic needs for multi-scale actinide speciation and bonding information and also the realistic needs for nuclear energy research. In this review, recent research progresses on actinide related materials by means of various SR techniques were selectively highlighted and summarized, with the emphasis on X-ray absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction and scattering spectroscopy, which are powerful tools to characterize actinide materials. Purpose: Americium-241 ((241)Am) presents a potential risk for nuclear industry workers associated with reactor decommissioning and aging combustible materials. The purpose of this study was to investigate Am renal retention after actinide contamination by wounding in the rat., Materials and Methods: Anesthetized rats were contaminated with Mixed Oxide (MOX) (7.1% Plutonium [Pu] by mass and containing 27% Am as % total alpha activity), Pu or Am nitrate following an incision wound of the hind leg. Times of euthanasia ranged from 2 hours to 5 months after contamination. Pu and Am levels were quantified following radiochemistry and alpha-spectrophotometry., Results: Initial data show that over the experimental period the proportion of Am in kidneys as a fraction of total kidney alpha activity was elevated as compared to MOX powder indicating a specific retention in this organ. The percentage of Pu was similar to the powder. After MOX contamination, kidney to liver ratios appeared to increase more markedly for Am (from 0.2 at 7 days to 0.6 at 90 days) as compared with Pu (0.1 at 7 days to 0.2 at 90 days). In accordance with tissue actinide retention the dose from Am to the kidney increases with time. For comparison, the ratio of estimated equivalent doses due to Am to kidney is 1.5-fold greater than for Pu (around 90 versus 60 mSv)., Conclusion: After actinide contamination of wounds, Am is concentrated in the kidneys as compared to Pu leading to potential exposure of renal tissue to both alpha particles and gamma radiation.

Purpose: The actinides are chemical poisons and radiological hazards. One challenge to better appraise their toxicity and develop countermeasures in case of exposure of living organisms is to better assess pathways of contamination. Because of the high chemical affinity of those actinide elements for phosphate groups and the ubiquity of such chemical functions in biochemistry, nucleotides and in particular adenosine triphosphate nucleotide (ATP) may be considered critical target building blocks for actinides., Materials and Methods: Combinations of spectroscopic techniques (Fourier transformed Infra Red [FTIR], Electrospray Ionization Mass Spectrometry [ESI-MS], and Extended X-ray Absorption Fine Structure [EXAFS]) with quantum chemical calculations have been implemented in order to assess the actinides coordination arrangement with ATP., Results: We describe and compare herein the interaction of ATP with thorium and americium; thorium(IV) as a representative of actinide(IV) like plutonium(IV) and americium(III) as a representative of all heavier actinides. In the case of thorium, an insoluble complex is readily formed. In the case of americium, a behavior identical to that described previously for lutetium has been observed with insoluble and soluble complexes., Conclusions: The comparative study of ATP complexation with Th(IV) and Am(III) shows their ability to form insoluble complexes for which a structural model has been proposed by analogy with previously described Lu(III) complexes.

The hydration free energies, structures, and dynamics of open- and closed-shell trivalent lanthanide and actinide metal cations are studied using molecular dynamics simulations (MD) based on a polarizable force field. Parameters for the metal cations are derived from an ab initio bottom-up strategy. MD simulations of six cations solvated in bulk water are subsequently performed with the AMOEBA polarizable force field. The calculated first-and second shell hydration numbers, water residence times, and free energies of hydration are consistent with experimental/theoretical values leading to a predictive modeling of f-elements compounds.

A series of actinide (An) species of L-An-N compounds [An = Pa-Pu, L = [N(CH2CH2NSiPr(i)3)3](3-), Pr(i) = CH(CH3)2] have been investigated using scalar relativistic density functional theory (DFT) without considering spin-orbit coupling effects. The ground state geometric and electronic structures and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis of actinide compounds were studied systematically in neutral and anionic forms. It was found that with increasing actinide atomic number, the bond length of terminal multiple An-N1 bond decreases, in accordance with the actinide contraction. The Mayer bond order of An-N1 decreases gradually from An = Pa to Pu, which indicates a decrease in bond strength. The terminal multiple bond for L-An-N compounds contains one σ and two π molecular orbitals, and the contributions of the 6d orbital to covalency are larger in magnitude than the 5f orbital based on NBO analysis and topological analysis of electron density. This work may help in understanding of the bonding nature of An-N multiple bonds and elucidating the trends and electronic structure changes across the actinide series. It can also shed light on the construction of novel An-N multiple bonds.

A model is developed to describe solute transport and retention in fractured rocks. It accounts for advection along the fracture, molecular diffusion from the fracture to the rock matrix composed of several geological layers, adsorption on the fracture surface, adsorption in the rock matrix layers and radioactive decay-chains. The analytical solution, obtained for the Laplace-transformed concentration at the outlet of the flowing channel, can conveniently be transformed back to the time domain by the use of the de Hoog algorithm. This allows one to readily include it into a fracture network model or a channel network model to predict nuclide transport through channels in heterogeneous fractured media consisting of an arbitrary number of rock units with piecewise constant properties. More importantly, the simulations made in this study recommend that it is necessary to account for decay-chains and also rock matrix comprising at least two different geological layers, if justified, in safety and performance assessment of the repositories for spent nuclear fuel., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V. Recent advances (during the 2007-2014 period) in the coordination and organometallic chemistry of compounds containing natural and artificially prepared radionuclides (actinides and technetium), are reviewed. Radioactive isotopes of naturally stable elements are not included for discussion in this work. Actinide and technetium complexes with O-, N-, N,O, N,S-, P-containing ligands, as well π-organometallics are discussed from the view point of their synthesis, properties, and main applications. On the basis of their properties, several mono-, bi-, tri-, tetra- or polydentate ligands have been designed for specific recognition of some particular radionuclides, and can be used in the processes of nuclear waste remediation, i.e., recycling of nuclear fuel and the separation of actinides and fission products from waste solutions or for analytical determination of actinides in solutions; actinide metal complexes are also usefulas catalysts forcoupling gaseous carbon monoxide,as well as antimicrobial and anti-fungi agents due to their biological activity. Radioactive labeling based on the short-lived metastable nuclide technetium-99m ((99m)Tc) for biomedical use as heart, lung, kidney, bone, brain, liver or cancer imaging agents is also discussed. Finally, the promising applications of technetium labeling of nanomaterials, with potential applications as drug transport and delivery vehicles, radiotherapeutic agents or radiotracers for monitoring metabolic pathways, are also described.

Polymer inclusion membranes (PIM) containing TODGA (N,N,N',N'-tetra-n-octyl diglycolamide) were evaluated for the separation of actinide ions such as Am(3+), Pu(4+), UO2(2+) and Th(4+) from acidic feeds. The PIMs were prepared using cellulose triacetate (CTA) as the polymer matrix and 2-nitrophenyloctyl ether (NPOE) as the plasticizer along with the diglycolamide carrier extractants and were characterized by conventional techniques such as XRD, thermal analysis and AFM. The PIM composition was optimized by a series of studies which involved variation in the CTA, NPOE and carrier concentration which suggested 58% TODGA, 30% NPOE and 12% CTA to be optimum. The uptake studies were carried out using feed solutions containing varying concentrations of nitric acid and showed the trend: Am(3+)>Pu(4+)>Th(4+)>UO2(2+). Transport studies were carried out in a two-compartment cell where nitric acid concentration the feed was varied (1-3M) while the receiver compartment contained alpha-hydroxy-iso-butyric acid (AHIBA). The actinide ion transport efficiencies with TODGA containing PIMs followed the same trend as seen in the uptake studies. The AFM patterns of the PIMs changed when loaded with Eu(3+) carrier (used as a surrogate for Am(3+)) while the regenerated membranes have displayed comparable morphologies. Diffusion coefficient values were experimentally obtained from the transport studies and were found to be 8.89×10(-8) cm(2)/s for Am(3+) transport., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier B.V.
