Abstract

With the increasing number of internet-based resources and applications, the amount of attacks faced by companies has increased significantly in the past years. Likewise, the techniques to test security and emulate attacks need to be constantly improved and, as a consequence, help to mitigate attacks. Among these techniques, penetration test (Pentest) provides methods to assess the security posture of assets, using different tools and methodologies applied in specific scenarios. Therefore, this study aims to present current methodologies, tools, and potential challenges applied to Pentest from an updated systematic literature review. As a result, this work provides a new perspective on the scenarios where penetration tests are performed. Also, it presents new challenges such as automation of techniques, management of costs associated with offensive security, and the difficulty in hiring qualified professionals to perform Pentest., Comment: 11 pages, 2 figures. Abstract

We show that an infinite group $G$ definable in a $1$-h-minimal field admits a strictly $K$-differentiable structure with respect to which $G$ is a (weak) Lie group, and show that definable local subgroups sharing the same Lie algebra have the same germ at the identity. We conclude that infinite fields definable in $K$ are definably isomorphic to finite extensions of $K$ and that $1$-dimensional groups definable in $K$ are finite-by-abelian-by-finite. Along the way we develop the basic theory of definable weak $K$-manifolds and definable morphisms between them.

Abstract

Obtaining per-beat information is a key task in the analysis of cardiac electrocardiograms (ECG), as many downstream diagnosis tasks are dependent on ECG-based measurements. Those measurements, however, are costly to produce, especially in recordings that change throughout long periods of time. However, existing annotated databases for ECG delineation are small, being insufficient in size and in the array of pathological conditions they represent. This article delves has two main contributions. First, a pseudo-synthetic data generation algorithm was developed, based in probabilistically composing ECG traces given "pools" of fundamental segments, as cropped from the original databases, and a set of rules for their arrangement into coherent synthetic traces. The generation of conditions is controlled by imposing expert knowledge on the generated trace, which increases the input variability for training the model. Second, two novel segmentation-based loss functions have been developed, which attempt at enforcing the prediction of an exact number of independent structures and at producing closer segmentation boundaries by focusing on a reduced number of samples. The best performing model obtained an $F_1$-score of 99.38\% and a delineation error of $2.19 \pm 17.73$ ms and $4.45 \pm 18.32$ ms for all wave's fiducials (onsets and offsets, respectively), as averaged across the P, QRS and T waves for three distinct freely available databases. The excellent results were obtained despite the heterogeneous characteristics of the tested databases, in terms of lead configurations (Holter, 12-lead), sampling frequencies ($250$, $500$ and $2,000$ Hz) and represented pathophysiologies (e.g., different types of arrhythmias, sinus rhythm with structural heart disease), hinting at its generalization capabilities, while outperforming current state-of-the-art delineation approaches.

Abstract

Introduction: The 2019 novel coronavirus pandemic has caused significant disruptions in the clinical operations of hospitals as well as clinical education, training, and research at academic centers. New York State was among the first and largest epicenters of the pandemic, resulting in significant disruptions across its 29 emergency medicine (EM) residency programs. We conducted a cross-sectional observational study of EM residency programs in New York State to assess the impact of the pandemic on resident education and training programs.Methods: We surveyed a cross-sectional sample of residency programs throughout New York State in June 2020, in the timeframe immediately after the state’s first “wave” of the pandemic. The survey was distributed to program leadership and elicited information on pandemic-prompted curricular modifications and other educational changes. The survey covered topics related to disruptions in medical education and sought details on solutions to educational issues encountered by programs.Results: Of the 29 accredited EM residency programs in New York State, leadership from 22 (76%) responded. Of these participating programs, 11 (50%) experienced high pandemic impact on clinical services, 21 (95%) canceled their own trainees’ off-service rotations, 22 (100%) canceled or postponed visiting medical student rotations, 22 (100%) adopted virtual conference formats (most within the first week of the pandemic wave), and 11 (50%) stopped all prospective research (excluding COVID-19 research), while most programs continued retrospective research.Conclusion: This study highlights the profound educational impact of the pandemic on residency programs in one of the hardest- and earliest-hit regions in the United States. Specifically, it highlights the ubiquity of virtual conferencing, the significant impact on research, and the concerns about canceled rotations and missed training opportunities for residents, as well as prehospital and non-physician practitioner trainees. This data should be used to prompt discussion regarding the necessity of alternate educational modalities for pandemic times and the sequelae of implementing these plans.

Abstract

PremiseAn informatics approach was used for the construction of an Axiom genotyping array from heterogeneous, high-throughput sequence data to assess the complex genome of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda).MethodsHigh-throughput sequence data, sourced from exome capture and whole genome reduced-representation approaches from 2698 trees across five sequence populations, were analyzed with the improved genome assembly and annotation for the loblolly pine. A variant detection, filtering, and probe design pipeline was developed to detect true variants across and within populations. From 8.27 million variants, a total of 642,275 were evaluated and 423,695 of those were screened across a range-wide population.ResultsThe final informatics and screening approach delivered an Axiom array representing 46,439 high-confidence variants to the forest tree breeding and genetics community. Based on the annotated reference genome, 34% were located in or directly upstream or downstream of genic regions.DiscussionThe Pita50K array represents a genome-wide resource developed from sequence data for an economically important conifer, loblolly pine. It uniquely integrates independent projects that assessed trees sampled across the native range. The challenges associated with the large and repetitive genome are addressed in the development of this resource.
