Nuclear fission is still one of the most complex physical processes due to the interplay between macroscopic and microscopic nuclear properties that decide the output. An example of this coupling is the presence of nuclear dissipation as an important ingredient that contributes to drive the dynamics and has a clear impact on the time of the process. However, different theoretical interpretations and scarce experimental data make it poorly understood. At low excitation energy, the relative yields of fragments even and odd atomic numbers show a clear difference, which can be quantified with the so-called even-odd effect. This seemingly mundane property can be used to obtain information about the energy dissipated during the process and the role of structure in its dynamics. In this paper, the study of the even-odd effect for elasticand transfer-induced fission data is discussed. A clear connection with particular fragment shells and the dissipation energy is found, as detailed in Ref. [1]. In addition, preliminary results from quasi-fission data show the formation of a relatively large even-odd effect, which suggests a process with low dissipation mainly consisting in the exchange of nucleon pairs.

During the last decade, the use of inverse kinematics in the experimental study of fission is bringing a wealth of new observables obtained in single measurements, allowing their analysis and their correlations. An ongoing application of this technique is the basis of a series of experiments performed with the variable-mode, large-acceptance VAMOS++ spectrometer at GANIL. A recent experiment has been focused on the survival of the nuclear structure effects at high excitation energy in fission and quasi-fission. The full isotopic identification of fragments, the fission dynamics and the ratio between the production of fragments with even and odd atomic numbers, the so-called proton even-odd effect, are shown. The latter shows a different mechanism for fission and quasi-fission that could be used to separate fission from quasi-fission.

Over the past decade, inverse kinematics has been increasingly employed in experimental studies of fission. This approach has yielded a wealth of new observables that can be obtained in single measurements, enabling their analysis and correlations. One ongoing application of this technique involves a series of experiments performed at GANIL using the variable-mode, large-acceptance VAMOS++ spectrometer. A recent experiment focused on examining the survival of nuclear structure effects at high excitation energy in both fission and quasi-fission. The results of the study involved a full isotopic identification of fragments, as well as an analysis of the elemental yields their relation to fission dynamics. The results indicate that fission and quasi-fission involve different mechanisms, which could be exploited to distinguish between the two phenomena.

Fission at low excitation energy, is a process in which both macroscopic and microscopic aspects are involved. Some features in the total kinetic energy and in the N/Z distributions of the fragments, commonly associated with shell effects, came out in a series of recent experiments with high excitation energy fusionfission reactions in inverse kinematics. In the latest experiment of this campaign, a study of high-energy fission and quasi-fission between a 238U beam and a series of light targets was carried out by using the aforementioned technique, in order to probe the role of the shell structure in these processes.

Multineutron and multiproton transfer channels, populated in the inverse kinematics reaction 197Au+130Te at Elab=1.07 GeV, were measured at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro using the presently heaviest ion beam delivered by the PIAVE-ALPI accelerator complex and detecting both projectile-like and targetlike ions. To this end the large solid angle magnetic spectrometer PRISMA was coupled to a second arm for the detection of the heavy fragments in kinematic coincidence with the light ones selected and identified with the spectrometer. The data analysis is still in progress and will allow to compare the yields of both light and heavy partner with theoretical predictions performed with the GRAZING code to get quantitative information on transfer channels and the effect of evaporation and fission on the production rate of primary fragments. The mass integrated Z distribution, extracted from the experimental data, evidenced the population of proton pickup channels that, in conjunction with the neutron stripping ones from the 130Te, open the path for the production of neutron-rich heavy nuclei. In the following, we will present some preliminary results as well as details on the experimental configuration and perspectives for future investigations in the neutron-rich heavy region.

The fission process still remains a main factor that determines the stability of the atomic nucleus of heaviest elements. Fission half-lives vary over a wide range, 10−19−1024 s. Present experimental techniques for the synthesis of the superheavy elements that usually measure α-decay chains are sensitive only in a limited range of half-lives, often 10−5−103 s. In the past years, measurement techniques for very short-lived and very long-lived nuclei were significantly improved at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA at GSI Darmstadt. Recently, several experimental studies of fission-related phenomena have successfully been performed. In this paper, results on 254−256Rf and 266Lr are presented and corresponding factors for retarding the fission process are discussed.

In the last period, two classes of experiments have been carried out with the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer PRISMA. In particular, the one- and two-neutron transfer processes at energies ranging from the Coulomb barrier to deep below it and the population of exotic neutron rich nuclei in the A~130 and A~200 mass regions have been studied. Both kinds of experiments have been performed in inverse kinematics identifying in A, Z and velocity the light target-like recoils with PRISMA placed at very forward angles in order to have, at the same time, high efficiency and good energy and mass resolutions.

Spin distribution measurements were performed for the reaction 64Ni + 100Mo at three beam energies ranging from 230 to 260 MeV. Compound nucleus (CN) spin distributions were obtained channel selective for each evaporation residue populated by the de-excitation cascade. A comparison of the spin distribution at different beam energies indicates that its slope becomes steeper and steeper with increasing beam energy. This change in slope of the spin distribution is mainly due to the onset of fission competition with particle evaporation at higher beam energies.

Nuclides that are considered to be isotopes of element Z = 115 were produced in the reaction 48Ca + 243Am at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung Darmstadt. The detector setup TASISpec was used. It was mounted behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. Thirty correlated α-decay chains were found, and the energies of the particles were determined with high precision. Two important spectroscopic aspects of the offline data analysis are discussed in detail: the handling of digitized preamplified signals from the silicon strip detectors, and the energy reconstruction of particles escaping to upstream detectors relying on pixel-by-pixel dead-layer thicknesses.

Fission fragment mass distributions were measured in heavy-ion induced fissions using 238U target nucleus. The measured mass distributions changed drastically with incident energy. The results are explained by a change of the ratio between fusion and qasifission with nuclear orientation. A calculation based on a fluctuation dissipation model reproduced the mass distributions and their incident energy dependence. Fusion probability was determined in the analysis, and the values were consistent with those determined from the evaporation residue cross sections.

Fragment mass distributions for fission after full momentum transfer were measured in the reactions of 30Si,34,36 S,31P,40Ar + 238U at bombarding energies around the Coulomb barrier. Mass distributions change significantly as a function of incident beam energy. The asymmetric fission probability increases at sub-barrier energy. The phenomenon is interpreted as an enhanced quasifission probability owing to orientation effects on fusion and/or quasifission. The evaporation residue (ER) cross sections were measured in the reactions of 30Si + 238U and 34S + 238U to obtain information on fusion. In the latter reaction, significant suppression of fusion was implied. This suggests that fission events different from compound nucleus are included in the masssymmetric fragments. The results are supported by a model calculation based on a dynamical calculation using Langevin equation, in which the mass distribution for fusion-fission and quasifission fragments are separately determined.

The influence of the nuclear structure of projectile and target nuclei on the capture cross-sections was investigated in the fusion reactions 34S+204,206,208Pb and 36S+204,206,208Pb. Capture cross-sections were deduced from the fission fragments measured with multi-wire proportional counters. Significantly enhanced capture-fission cross-sections were observed for the 34S induced reactions compared to 36S at beam energies below the interaction barriers. The experimental results were compared to a coupled-channel calculation. The enhancement was explained by strong couplings to vibrational states of the 34S with 204,206,208Pb. The capture and evaporation residue cross-sections of 34S+208Pb and 36S+206Pb reactions which lead to the same compound nucleus 242Cf are compared and discussed.

The heaviest currently known nuclei, which have up to 118 protons, have been produced in Ca48 induced reactions with actinide targets. Among them, the element tennessine (Ts), which has 117 protons, has been synthesized by fusing Ca48 with the radioactive target Bk249, which has a half-life of 327 d. The experiment was performed at the gas-filled recoil separator TASCA. Two long and two short α decay chains were observed. The long chains were attributed to the decay of Ts294. The possible origin of the short-decay chains is discussed in comparison with the known experimental data. They are found to fit with the decay chain patterns attributed to Ts293. The present experimental results confirm the previous findings at the Dubna Gas-Filled Recoil Separator on the decay chains originating from the nuclei assigned to Ts.

Decay energies and times from pile-up events were extracted with a tailor-made pulse-shape analysis routine and specific α-decay chains were identified in a correlation analysis. Decay chains starting with the even-even Ra220 and its odd-A neighbors, Fr219, and Ra221,219, with a focus on the Ra219→Rn215 decay, were studied by means of α-γ spectroscopy. A revised α-decay scheme of Ra219 is proposed, including a new decay branch from a previously not considered isomeric state at 17 keV excitation energy. Conclusions on nuclear structure are drawn from the experimental data, aided by Geant4 simulations and a discussion on theoretical calculations.

Products of the fusion-evaporation reaction 48Ca + 243Am were studied with the TASISpec set-up at the gas-filled separator TASCA at the GSI Helmholtzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. Amongst the detected thirty correlated α-decay chains associated with the production of element Z=115, two recoil-α-fission and five recoil-α-α-fission events were observed. The latter five chains are similar to four such events reported from experiments performed at the Dubna gas-filled separator, and three such events reported from an experiment at the Berkeley gas-filled separator. The four chains observed at the Dubna gas-filled separator were assigned to start from the 2n-evaporation channel 289115 due to the fact that these recoil-α-α-fission events were observed only at low excitation energies. Contrary to this interpretation, we suggest that some of these recoil-α-α-fission decay chains, as well as some of the recoil-α-α-fission and recoil-α-fission decay chains reported from Berkeley and in this article, start from the 3n-evaporation channel 288115.

Produced in the reaction 48Ca+243Am, thirty correlated α-decay chains were observed in an experiment conducted at the GSI Helmholzzentrum für Schwerionenforschung, Darmstadt, Germany. The decay chains are basically consistent with previous findings and are considered to originate from isotopes of element 115 with mass numbers 287, 288, and 289. A set-up aiming specifically for high-resolution charged particle and photon coincidence spectroscopy was placed behind the gas-filled separator TASCA. For the first time, γ rays as well as X-ray candidates were observed in prompt coincidence with the α-decay chains of element 115.

To identify the atomic number of superheavy nuclei produced in 48Ca-induced fusion-evaporation reactions, an experiment aiming at measuring characteristic X-rays is being prepared at GSI, Darmstadt, Germany. The gas-filled separator TASCA will be employed, sending the residues towards the multi-coincidence detector setup TASISpec. Two ionoptical modes relying on differing magnetic polarities of the quadrupole magnets can be used at TASCA. New simulations and experimental tests of transmission and background suppression for these two focusing modes into TASISpec are presented.

The deformed doubly magic nucleus Hs270 has so far only been observed as the four-neutron (4n) evaporation residue of the reaction Mg26+Cm248, where a maximum cross section of 3 pb was measured. Theoretical studies on the formation of Hs270 in the 4n evaporation channel of fusion reactions with different entrance channel asymmetry in the framework of a two-parameter Smoluchowski equation predict that the reactions Ca48+Ra226 and S36+U238 result in higher cross sections due to lower reaction Q values, in contrast to simple arguments based on the reaction asymmetry, which predict opposite trends. Calculations using hivap predict cross sections for the reaction S36+U238 that are similar to those of the Mg26+Cm248 reaction. Here, we report on the first measurement of evaporation residues formed in the complete nuclear fusion reaction S36+U238 and the observation of Hs270, which is produced in the 4n evaporation channel, with a measured cross section of 0.8-0.7+2.6 pb at 51-MeV excitation energy. The one-event cross-section limits (68% confidence level) for the 3n, 4n, and 5n evaporation channels at 39-MeV excitation energy are 2.9 pb, while the cross-section limits of the 3n and 5n channel at 51 MeV are 1.5 pb. This is significantly lower than the 5n cross section of the Mg26+Cm248 reaction at similar excitation energy. © 2010 The American Physical Society.
