A heavy orographic precipitation event associated with the postfrontal sector of a midlatitude cyclone over the Australian Snowy Mountains (ASM) was analyzed using field observations and numerical simulations. This event, observed during a 2018 intensive field campaign, was of particular interest as three distinct precipitation episodes were identified within a prolonged postfrontal period. Deep mixed-phase clouds (MPCs) characterized by cold cloud-top temperatures (colder than −30°C) and the presence of updrafts extending 3.5–4.5 km above the boundary-layer height, produced the three enhanced precipitation events over the windward slopes of the ASM. The presence of conditional instabilities and deep updrafts were also found in the sounding and Doppler velocity observations respectively, while the cloud radar observations show the deep MPCs with cloud tops reaching to 6–7 km a.s.l. Orographic convection invigoration was found to be the main mechanism producing the precipitation enhancement over the windward slopes and higher terrain. Using the Weather Research/Forecasting model, we analyzed the rates of microphysical processes to explicitly account for the enhancement of precipitation formation processes in these MPCs. This analysis showed that the precipitation formation processes were further enhanced through depositional and riming growth of ice-phase hydrometeors during the three precipitation events. Deposition is simulated at higher levels (above the −15°C level) and most likely enabled by deep convective updrafts through the midtroposphere, whereas riming is stronger at lower levels (below −10°C level) due to the persistent production of feeder supercooled liquid water clouds sustained by the orographic lifting.

Marine atmospheric boundary layer (MABL) clouds cover vast areas over the ocean and have important radiative effects on the Earth's climate system. These radiative effects are known to be sensitive to the local organization, or structure, of the mesoscale cellular convection (MCC). A convolutional neural network model is used to identify the two idealized classes of MCC clouds, namely open and closed, over the Southern Ocean (SO) and Northwest Pacific (NP) from high-frequency geostationary Himawari-8 satellite observations. The results of the climatology show that MCC clouds are evenly distributed over the mid-latitude storm tracks for both hemispheres, with peaks poleward of the 40∘ latitude. Open-MCC clouds are more prevalent than closed MCC in both regions. An examination of the presumed meteorological forcing associated with open- and closed-MCC clouds is conducted to illustrate the influence of large-scale meteorological conditions. We establish the importance of the Kuroshio western boundary current in the spatial coverage of open and closed MCC across the NP, presumably through the supply of strong heat and moisture fluxes during marine cold-air outbreaks events. In regions where static stability is higher, we observe a more frequent occurrence of closed MCCs. This behavior contrasts markedly with that of open MCCs, whose formation and persistence are significantly influenced by the difference in temperature between the air and the sea surface. The occurrence frequency of closed MCC over the SO exhibits a significant diurnal cycle, while the diurnal cycle of closed MCC over the NP is less noticeable.

Southern Ocean (SO) air is amongst the most pristine on Earth, particularly during winter. Historically, there has been a focus on biogenic sources as an explanation for the seasonal cycle in cloud condensation nuclei concentrations (NCCN). NCCN is also sensitive to the strength of sink terms, although the magnitude of this term varies considerably. Wet deposition, a process encompassing coalescence scavenging (drizzle formation), is one such process that may be especially relevant over the SO. Using a boundary layer cloud climatology, NCCN and precipitation observations from Kennaook/Cape Grim Observatory (CGO), we find a statistically significant difference in NCCN between when the upwind meteorology is dominated by open mesoscale cellular convection (MCC) and closed MCC. When open MCC is dominant, a lower median NCCN (69 cm−3) is found compared to when closed MCC (89 cm−3) is dominant. Open MCC is found to precipitate more heavily (1.72 mm day−1) and more frequently (16.7% of the time) than closed MCC (0.29 mm day−1, 4.5%). These relationships are observed to hold across the seasonal cycle with maximum NCCN and minimum precipitation observed during Austral summer (DJF). Furthermore, the observed MCC morphology strongly depends on meteorological conditions. The relationship between NCCN and precipitation can be further examined across a diurnal cycle during the summer season. Although there was again a negative relationship between precipitation and NCCN, the precipitation cycle was out of phase with the NCCN cycle, leading it by ~3 hours, suggesting other factors, specifically the meteorology play a primary role in influencing precipitation.

This study presents the first numerical simulations of seeded clouds over the Snowy Mountains of Australia. WRF-WxMod®, a novel glaciogenic cloud seeding model, was utilized to simulate the cloud response to winter orographic seeding under various meteorological conditions. Three cases during the 2018 seeding periods were selected for model evaluation, coinciding with an intensive ground-based measurement campaign. The campaign data were used for model validation and evaluation. Comparisons between simulations and observations demonstrate that the model realistically represents cloud structures, liquid water path, and precipitation. Sensitivity tests were performed to pinpoint key uncertainties in simulating natural and seeded clouds and precipitation processes. They also shed light on the complex interplay between various physical parameters/processes and their interaction with large-scale meteorology. Our study found that in unseeded scenarios, the warm and cold biases in different initialization datasets can heavily influence the intensity and phase of natural precipitation. Secondary ice production via Hallett-Mossop processes exerts a secondary influence. On the other hand, the seeding impacts are primarily sensitive to aerosol conditions and the natural ice nucleation process. Both factors alter the supercooled liquid water availability and the precipitation phase, consequently impacting the AgI nucleation rate. Furthermore, model sensitivities were inconsistent across cases, indicating no single model configuration optimally represents all three cases. This highlights the necessity of employing an ensemble approach for a more comprehensive and accurate assessment of the seeding impact.

Marine atmospheric boundary layer clouds cover vast areas of the Southern Ocean (SO), where they are commonly organized into mesoscale cellular convection (MCC). Using 3 years of Himawari-8 geostationary satellite observations, open and closed MCC structures are identified using a hybrid convolutional neural network. The results of the climatology show that open MCC clouds are roughly uniformly distributed over the SO storm track across midlatitudes, while closed MCC clouds are most predominant in the southeast Indian Ocean, with a second maximum along the storm track. The ocean polar front, derived from ECMWF-ERA5 sea surface temperature gradients, is found to be aligned with the southern boundaries for both MCC types. Along the storm track, both closed and open MCCs are commonly located in post-frontal, cold air masses. The hourly classification of closed MCC reveals a pronounced daily cycle, with a peak occurring late night/early morning. Seasonally, the diurnal cycle of closed MCC is most intense during the summer months (December–February; DJF). Conversely, almost no diurnal cycle is evident for open MCC.

Product care describes consumers' activities to prolong the lifetime of a product, such as repair, maintenance or careful handling. By keeping the product in a functional state, replacement can be postponed. Previous research has identified eight design strategies that can foster product care among consumers. To use these design strategies to their full potential, a deeper understanding of their effectiveness is needed. The current study aimed to evaluate the design strategies with consumers. We conducted interviews with 15 consumers and discussed the effectiveness of our strategies for product care in the consumers’ daily life. Results indicate that the effectiveness of our strategies varies over products and product categories. A combination of strategies seems to be the most promising approach for fostering product care among consumers. Taking care of products is a relevant approach to prolong products’ lifetimes and retain their desired level of performance, and is thus an important aspect of sustainable consumer behaviour. Although consumers have a general motivation to take care of their products, previous research has shown that they struggle to repair, maintain or treat their products carefully in daily life. Design has the potential to increase consumers’ product care activities, but designers need more knowledge and distinct strategies to evoke this product care behaviour with consumers. Product care is defined as all activities initiated by consumers that encourage an extension of product lifetimes, such as repair, maintenance, and/or careful handling. A product care scale was developed and validated in a set of four related studies. In study 1, we asked experts to examine the face validity of a set of 35 items. In study 2, we reduced the initial set of items to 10 items using exploratory factor analysis. A subsequent confirmatory factor analysis supported a three-factor solution. Study 3, a nomological network study, demonstrated that the construct measured by our scale is related but still distinguishable from existing concepts, such as frugality, use innovativeness and attachment towards the product. Study 4 was a known-groups test with participants from two different countries and with various previous experiences in repairing. Understanding the key dynamical and microphysical mechanisms driving precipitation in the Snowy Mountains region of southeast Australia, including the role of orography, can help improve precipitation forecasts, which is of great value for efficient water management. An intensive observation campaign was carried out during the 2018 austral winter, providing a comprehensive range of ground-based observations across the Snowy Mountains. We used data from three vertically pointing rain radars, cloud radar, a PARSIVEL disdrometer, and a network of 76 pluviometers. The observations reveal that all of the precipitation events were associated with cold front passages. About half accumulated during the frontal passage associated with deep, fully glaciated cloud tops, while the rest occurred in the postfrontal environment and were associated with clouds with supercooled liquid water (SLW) tops. About three-quarters of the accumulated precipitation was observed under blocked conditions, likely associated with blocked stratiform orographic enhancement. Specifically, more than a third of the precipitation resulted from moist cloudless air being lifted over stagnant air, upwind from the barrier, creating SLW-top clouds. These SLW clouds then produced stratiform precipitation mostly over the upwind slopes and mountain tops, with hydrometeors reaching the mountain tops mostly as rimed snow. Two precipitation events were studied in detail, which showed that during unblocked conditions, orographic convection invigoration and unblocked stratiform enhancement were the two main mechanisms driving the precipitation, with the latter being more prevalent after the frontal passage. During these events, ice particle growth was likely dominated by vapor deposition and aggregation during the frontal periods, while riming dominated during the postfrontal periods.

Product-service systems are circular business models that can potentially extend product lifetimes and reduce resource consumption. However, consumer product care is crucial in these business models. We explore consumer product care of newly bought, second-hand, and accessed bicycles and washing machines through an online survey (n = 212). Our analysis shows lower consumer product care of accessed products compared to ownership. Product care is defined as all activities initiated by the consumer that lead to the extension of a product’s lifetime. It includes repair and maintenance, as well as preventive measures or general careful handling of a product. Product care is one way to extend a product’s lifetime, as it keeps the product in a usable and maintained state for a longer period of time, thereby postponing its replacement. An issue with product care is that it heavily relies on consumers’ behaviour once the product is in use. Therefore, the main research question of this thesis is: How can design foster product care among consumers? We present the current state of product care among consumers, a scale to measure product care, and design strategies to foster product care. In addition, we explore product care in access-based product-service systems. Using the insights identified in this PhD project, designers can create and redesign products in such a way that care activities will be more likely to be performed., Marketing and Consumer Research

We simulate the two Coupled Model Intercomparison Project scenarios RCP4.5 and RCP8.5, to assess the effects of melt‐induced fresh water on the Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC). We use a newly developed climate model with high resolution at the coasts, resolving the complex ocean dynamics. Our results show an AMOC recovery in simulations run with and without an included ice sheet model. We find that the ice sheet adds a strong decadal variability on the freshwater release, resulting in intervals in which it reduces the surface runoff by high accumulation rates. This compensating effect is missing in climate models without dynamic ice sheets. Therefore, we argue to assess those freshwater hosing experiments critically, which aim to parameterize Greenland's freshwater release. We assume the increasing net evaporation over the Atlantic and the resulting increase in ocean salinity, to be the main driver of the AMOC recovery.

DNA-protein crosslinks (DPCs) are highly cytotoxic lesions that obstruct essential DNA transactions and whose resolution is critical for cell and organismal fitness. However, the mechanisms by which cells respond to and overcome DPCs remain incompletely understood. Recent studies unveiled a dedicated DPC repair pathway in higher eukaryotes involving the SprT-type metalloprotease SPRTN/DVC1, which proteolytically processes DPCs during DNA replication in a ubiquitin-regulated manner. Here, we show that chemically induced and defined enzymatic DPCs trigger potent chromatin SUMOylation responses targeting the crosslinked proteins and associated factors. Consequently, inhibiting SUMOylation compromises DPC clearance and cellular fitness. We demonstrate that ACRC/GCNA family SprT proteases interact with SUMO and establish important physiological roles of Caenorhabditis elegans GCNA-1 and SUMOylation in promoting germ cell and embryonic survival upon DPC formation. Our findings provide first global insights into signaling responses to DPCs and reveal an evolutionarily conserved function of SUMOylation in facilitating responses to these lesions in metazoans that may complement replication-coupled DPC resolution processes.

Taking care of products is an important aspect of sustainable consumer behaviour, because it is an appropriate approach to prolong products' lifetimes. Although consumers in general agree on this and demonstrate a general motivation to take care of their products, previous research has shown that they struggle to repair, maintain or treat their products carefully in daily life. Design has the potential to increase consumers' product care activities, but more knowledge and distinct strategies are needed by designers to purposefully design for this behaviour. We used three different approaches – a workshop with design students, an analysis of already existing products and services that have implemented aspects of product care, and an ideation session – to create eight strategies and 24 substrategies that can stimulate product care through design. These eight strategies are informing, enabling, social connections, appropriation, control, awareness, antecedents & consequences, and reflecting. To support designers in the implementation of these strategies, we transferred these strategies into a toolkit, which can be used in the product development process of different kinds of products. To contribute to a more sustainable way of consumption, products should stay usable as long as possible. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of products. Product care should be understood as any action that helps prolonging the lifetime of a product, such as maintenance, repair etc. These product care activities can be conducted by the consumer or by a service. Our interview study helps to understand consumers’ current product care behaviour towards products of different categories. Our study is based on Fogg’s behaviour model, which states that motivation, ability and triggers have to be present at the same time to lead to certain behaviour. We were able to identify different motivators (e.g. pleasure, price, functionality), ability factors (e.g. tools, time and effort) and triggers (e.g. appearance triggers, social triggers) for product care. Based upon the findings of this study, strategies that enhance product care are suggested and relevant aspects for future research are proposed., Marketing and Consumer Research

While the effect of sulphur on c-ZrO2 is often considered in application of advanced solid oxide fuel cells and biomass gasification cleanup, there has been little study on the effect of sulphur on general structure of c-ZrO2. In this work a study of the structural, energetic, electronic and elastic properties of doped c-ZrO2-xSx, t-ZrO2xSx and m-ZrO2-xSx solid solutions has been carried out using ab-initio total energy calculation of the density functional theory under plane wave pseudopotential method within generalized gradient approximation using the self-consistent virtual crystal approximation (VCA). It has been shown that all the calculated properties obtained after relaxation are in good agreement with available experimental and other calculated values, particularly at x=0. Furthermore, the formation and cohesive energies were calculated to determine the relative stability of all three non-sulphated and sulphated polymorphs of ZrO2. The density of states and band structures have been computed for x = 0.0 - 0.5, and the actual size of the band gap of ZrO2 compounds narrowed with partial replacement of oxygen by sulphur, while peaks above Fermi level move towards the Fermi level. The material changes its insulating properties to semiconductor material as a function of sulphur concentration, which might be useful for potential application. We also investigated and calculated, for the first time, the effect composition variation on mechanical stability, the independent elastic constants and other elastic parameters of the sulphated compounds. The polycrystalline bulk moduli, shear moduli, Young and Poisson’s ratio have been deduced by using Voight-Reuss-Hill (VRH) approximation. In addition we also show the geometric and electronic structure of pure ZrOS and ZrS2 and compare them with the obtained geometric and electronic structures of ZrO2-xSx.
