Abstract

Biodiversity should not be understood in biological terms only and as a thing apart from society, but rather as biocultural diversity present in the social world and in various cultures. Such a perspective might allow to relieve social conflicts as well as abuses of power, and slow the appropriation of the biosphere. This volume of the Handbook »The Anthropocene as Multiple Crisis« focuses on biodiversity in the main macro-regions of Latin America from the colonial regime to the contemporary era of the Anthropocene. The contributions enrich contemporary debates surrounding the genealogy of the Anthropocene in Latin America with critical perspectives from the social sciences and the humanities.

7. Hallux Rigidus

Abstract

Hallux rigidus is a degenerative arthritic condition affecting the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Prevalence in patients aged 50 years and above is estimated at 20% to 30%, with a portion being symptomatic. Conservative treatment's efficacy is linked to initial pain levels; though shoe modifications and insoles are commonly recommended, their true effectiveness lacks strong evidence. Injection therapy, including corticosteroids and hyaluronic acid, demonstrates varied outcomes, with about 50% of patients undergoing surgery within 1 to 2 years. The condition's etiology remains elusive, but recent biomechanical hypotheses hold promise.

Abstract

Klimawandel, Artensterben, massive Ressourcenausbeutung, Umweltverschmutzung, der Verbrauch nicht erneuerbarer, aber lebenswichtiger Elemente, all das sind Symptome einer planetarischen Krise, die die Ökosysteme – und damit auch den Menschen – gegenwärtig in ihrer Existenz bedrohen. Trotz ihrer globalen Dimensionen hat diese Krise regional, sozial und politisch sehr unterschiedliche Auswirkungen. Im Band werden die globalen Facetten dieser multiplen Umweltkrisen aus der Perspektive Lateinamerikas betrachtet. Dabei werden – gerade was den mit der Krise zusammenhängenden Konsum angeht – auch die Verflechtungen mit Europa betont. Zugleich diskutieren die Beiträge konkrete Lösungen und kreative Antworten auf die globale ökologische Krise aus lateinamerikanischer Perspektive.
