Abstract

This paper reports on the architectural, protocol, physical layer, and integrated testbed demonstrations carried out by the DISCUS FP7 consortium in the area of access-metro network convergence. Our architecture modeling results show the vast potential for cost and power savings that node consolidation can bring. The architecture, however, also recognizes the limits of long-reach transmission for low-latency 5G services and proposes ways to address such shortcomings in future projects. Abstract

Fiber to the premises has promised to increase the capacity in telecommunications access networks for well over 30 years. While it is widely recognized that optical-fiber-based access networks will be a necessity in the shortto medium-term future, its large upfront cost and regulatory issues are pushing many operators to further postpone its deployment, while installing intermediate unambitious solutions such as fiber to the cabinet. Such high investment cost of both network access and core capacity upgrade often derives from poor planning strategies that do not consider the necessity to adequately modify the network architecture to fully exploit the cost benefit that a fiber-centric solution can bring. DISCUS is a European Framework 7 Integrated Project that, building on optical-centric solutions such as long-reach passive optical access and flat optical core, aims to deliver a cost-effective architecture for ubiquitous broadband services. DISCUS analyzes, designs, and demonstrates end-to-end architectures and technologies capable of saving cost and energy by reducing the number of electronic terminations in the network and sharing the deployment costs among a larger number of users compared to current fiber access systems. Abstract

In this paper, we describe recent architectural and technological advances of the end to end optical network architecture proposed by the DISCUS project (the DIStributed Core for unlimited bandwidth supply for all Users and Services). The two main targets of DISCUS are the principle of equivalence in the access and the reduction of optical-to-electronic conversions in the metro-core network. Technological advances and techno-economic evaluation of Long-Reach Passive Optical Networks (LR-PON), as well as the optimal metro-core node architecture and the required network control plane framework are reported. Abstract

Photonic integrated circuits (PICs) are considered as the way to make photonic systems or subsystems cheap and ubiquitous. PICs still are several orders of magnitude more expensive than their microelectronic counterparts, which has restricted their application to a few niche markets. Recently, a novel approach in photonic integration is emerging which will reduce the R&D and prototyping costs and the throughput time of PICs by more than an order of magnitude. It will bring the application of PICs that integrate complex and advanced photonic functionality on a single chip within reach for a large number of small and larger companies and initiate a breakthrough in the application of Photonic ICs. The paper explains the concept of generic photonic integration technology using the technology developed by the COBRA research institute of TU Eindhoven as an example, and it describes the current status and prospects of generic InP-based integration technology

Abstract

We have demonstrated a low-cost high-bandwidth and high-responsivity evanescent waveguide unitravelling-carrier photodiode (PD) fabricated using all 2-in InP processing including on-wafer mirrors and coating. Optimization of the optical input waveguide was made using the method of the genetic algorithm associated with a beam propagation method. Optical fiber coupling to the PD is based on a diluted multimode waveguide allowing simple material epitaxial growth. The fabricated PDs exhibit simultaneously 0.76-A/W responsivity at 1.55 /spl mu/m, >50-GHz bandwidth, and more than 22-mA average saturation photocurrent at 50 GHz. The light polarization dependence is less than 0.1 dB

Abstract

A I W output power (2.8 W/mm) GaAs-based HBT with more than 56 % power added efficiency at 3 V operating bias for use in mobile communications is described. Device layout and technology are optimized to obtain high microwave performance with low thermal resistance and compact chip size. The fabricated sub-cell power HBTs with 3x30 urn2 emitter area yield a maximum current gain of 90 with fmax > 100 GHz. The power cell HBT, which has 12x3x30 um2 emitter area exhibits 3 W (8.4 W/mm) output power and 70 % power added efficiency at VCE=8 V while maintaining high performance at low supply bias of 3 V.
