One of the main unknowns in galaxy evolution is how gas flows into and out of galaxies in the circumgalactic medium (CGM). Studies observing the CGM in absorption using multiple or extended background objects suggest a high degree of variation on relatively small ($\lesssim 1$ kpc) spatial scales. Similarly, high-resolution simulations generally exhibit small-scale substructure in the gas around galaxies. We examine the small-scale structure of the $z = 1$ CGM using simulations from the FOGGIE (Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo) project. We select gaseous substructures ("clumps") by their local overdensity and investigate their physical properties, including temperature, metallicity, and kinematics with respect to the galaxy and the nearby surroundings. FOGGIE resolves clumps down to sphericalized radii $R \sim 0.25$ kpc at $z = 1$. The distribution of clumps peaks at $\sim 10^5$ $\rm M_{\odot}$ and $10^{4}$ K, consistent with relatively condensed, cool gas with a slight preference for inflow-like velocities. Many clumps show internal temperature and density variations, and thus internally varying ionization levels for key diagnostic ions such as HI, MgII, and OVI. The average metallicity in clumps is about a factor 1.5--2$\times$ lower in metallicity than nearby gas, suggesting that the metals are not well-mixed between structured and diffuse CGM, which may have implications for observational metallicity estimations of dense CGM clouds. We estimate the survivability of CGM clumps and find that structures larger than 0.5 kpc are generally long-lived. We investigate the co-evolution of the angular momentum of Milky Way-like galaxies, their circumgalactic gas, and their dark matter halos using zoom-in simulations from the Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies in Enzo (FOGGIE) suite. We examine how the magnitude and orientation of the angular momentum varies over time within the halo and between the components of mass. From z~2 to today, and in general across the simulated halos, the specific angular momenta of the central galaxies and the cool gas in their circumgalactic media (T < 10^5 K) increase together. Over that same period, the specific angular momenta of the hot (>10^6 K) and dark components of the halo change minimally. By z~1, the central galaxies have generally lost association with the angular momentum of their full dark matter halo -- both in magnitude and orientation. We find a wide distribution of angular momentum orientations in the halo, varying by up to 180 degrees over small (~tens of kpc) scales and between the different components of mass. The net angular momenta of the galaxies, their circumgalactic gas, and their dark matter halos are generally misaligned with one another at all cosmic times. The present-day orientation of the central galaxies are established at late times (after z=1), after the rates of cosmic accretion and mergers decline and the disks are able to settle and stabilize their orientation., Comment: 35 pages, 14 figures, submitted to ApJ

Gas-phase metallicity gradients are a crucial element in understanding the chemical evolution of galaxies. We use the FOGGIE simulations to study the metallicity gradients ($\nabla Z$) of six Milky Way-like galaxies throughout their evolution. FOGGIE galaxies generally exhibit steep negative gradients for most of their history, with only a few short-lived instances reaching positive slopes that appear to arise mainly from interactions with other galaxies. FOGGIE concurs with other simulation results but disagrees with the robust observational finding that flat and positive gradients are common at $z>1$. By tracking the metallicity gradient at a rapid cadence of simulation outputs ($\sim 5$--10 Myr), we find that theoretical gradients are highly stochastic: the FOGGIE galaxies spend $\sim 30-50$\% of their time far away from a smoothed trajectory inferred from analytic models or other, less high-cadence simulations. This rapid variation makes instantaneous gradients from observations more difficult to interpret in terms of physical processes. Because of these geometric and stochastic complications, we explore non-parametric methods of quantifying the evolving metallicity distribution at $z > 1$. We investigate how efficiently non-parametric measures of the 2-D metallicity distribution respond to metal production and mixing. Our results suggest that new methods of quantifying and interpreting gas-phase metallicity will be needed to relate trends in upcoming high-$z$ {\it JWST} observations with the underlying physics of gas accretion, expulsion, and recycling in early galaxies., Comment: Submitted to ApJ

We present the discovery of a unique Lyman-continuum (LyC) emitter at z=3.088. The LyC emission were detected using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) WFC3/UVIS F336W filter, covering a rest-frame wavelength range of 760-900 Angstrom. The peak signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of LyC emission is 3.9 in a r=0.24'' aperture and is spatially offset by 0.29''+/-0.04'' (~ 2.2+/-0.3 kpc) from the rest-UV emission peak (F606W). By combining imaging and spectroscopic data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) JADES, FRESCO and JEMS surveys, along with VLT/MUSE data from the MXDF survey, we estimate that the probability of random alignment with an interloper galaxy causing the LyC emission is less than 6x10^-5. The interstellar medium (ISM) conditions in the galaxy are similar to other LyC emitters at high redshift (12+log(O/H)=7.79+/-0.06, logU =-3.27+/-0.14, O32 = 3.65+/-0.22), although the single-peaked Lyman-alpha profile and lack of rest-UV emission lines suggest an optically thick ISM. We think that LyC photons are leaking through a narrow cone of optically thin neutral ISM, most likely created by a past merger (as evidenced by medium-band F210M and F182M images). Using the escape fraction constraints from individual leakers and a simple model, we estimate that the opening half-angle of ionization cones can be as low as 16^deg (2% ionised fraction) to reproduce some of the theoretical constraints on the average escape fraction for galaxies. The circumgalactic medium (CGM) is often assumed to exist in or near hydrostatic equilibrium with the regulation of accretion and the effects of feedback treated as perturbations to a stable balance between gravity and thermal pressure. We investigate global hydrostatic equilibrium in the CGM using four highly-resolved $L^*$ galaxies from the Figuring Out Gas & Galaxies In Enzo (FOGGIE) project. The FOGGIE simulations were specifically targeted at fine spatial and mass resolution in the CGM ($\Delta x \lesssim 1$ kpc $h^{-1}$ and $M \simeq 200M_\odot$). We develop a new analysis framework that calculates the forces provided by thermal pressure gradients, turbulent pressure gradients, ram pressure gradients of large-scale radial bulk flows, centrifugal rotation, and gravity acting on the gas in the CGM. Thermal and turbulent pressure gradients vary strongly on scales of $\lesssim5$ kpc throughout the CGM. Thermal pressure gradients provide the main supporting force only beyond $\sim 0.25R_{200}$, or $\sim50$ kpc at $z=0$. Within $\sim0.25R_{200}$, turbulent pressure gradients and rotational support provide stronger forces than thermal pressure. More generally, we find that global equilibrium models are neither appropriate nor predictive for the small scales probed by absorption line observations of the CGM. Local conditions generally cannot be derived by assuming a global equilibrium, but an emergent global equilibrium balancing radially inward and outward forces is obtained when averaging over the non-equilibrium local conditions on large scales in space and time. In addition to the well-known gas phase mass-metallicity relation (MZR), recent spatially-resolved observations have shown that local galaxies also obey a mass-metallicity gradient relation (MZGR) whereby metallicity gradients can vary systematically with galaxy mass. In this work, we use our recently-developed analytic model for metallicity distributions in galactic discs, which includes a wide range of physical processes -- radial advection, metal diffusion, cosmological accretion, and metal-enriched outflows -- to simultaneously analyse the MZR and MZGR. We show that the same physical principles govern the shape of both: centrally-peaked metal production favours steeper gradients, and this steepening is diluted by the addition of metal-poor gas, which is supplied by inward advection for low-mass galaxies and by cosmological accretion for massive galaxies. The MZR and the MZGR both bend at galaxy stellar mass $\sim 10^{10} - 10^{10.5}\,\rm{M_{\odot}}$, and we show that this feature corresponds to the transition of galaxies from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime. We also find that both the MZR and MZGR strongly suggest that low-mass galaxies preferentially lose metals entrained in their galactic winds. While this metal-enrichment of the galactic outflows is crucial for reproducing both the MZR and the MZGR at the low-mass end, we show that the flattening of gradients in massive galaxies is expected regardless of the nature of their winds., Comment: 3 figures, 1 appendix, 12 pages. We present a new model for the evolution of gas phase metallicity gradients in galaxies from first principles. We show that metallicity gradients depend on four ratios that collectively describe the metal equilibration timescale, production, transport, consumption, and loss. Our model finds that most galaxy metallicity gradients are in equilibrium at all redshifts. When normalized by metal diffusion, metallicity gradients are governed by the competition between radial advection, metal production, and accretion of metal-poor gas from the cosmic web. The model naturally explains the varying gradients measured in local spirals, local dwarfs, and high-redshift star-forming galaxies. We use the model to study the cosmic evolution of gradients across redshift, showing that the gradient in Milky Way-like galaxies has steepened over time, in good agreement with both observations and simulations. We also predict the evolution of metallicity gradients with redshift in galaxy samples constructed using both matched stellar masses and matched abundances. Our model shows that massive galaxies transition from the advection-dominated to the accretion-dominated regime from high to low redshifts, which mirrors the transition from gravity-driven to star formation feedback-driven turbulence. Lastly, we show that gradients in local ultraluminous infrared galaxies (major mergers) and inverted gradients seen both in the local and high-redshift galaxies may not be in equilibrium. For studies of galaxy formation and evolution, one of the major benefits of the James Webb Space Telescope is that space-based IFUs like those on its NIRSpec and MIRI instruments will enable spatially resolved spectroscopy of distant galaxies, including spectroscopy at the scale of individual star-forming regions in galaxies that have been gravitationally lensed. In the meantime, there is only a very small subset of lensed sources where work like this is possible even with the Hubble Space Telescope's Wide Field Camera 3 infrared channel grisms. We examine two of these sources, SDSS J1723+3411 and SDSS J2340+2947, using HST WFC3/IR grism data and supporting spatially-unresolved spectroscopy from several ground-based instruments to explore the size of spatial variations in observed strong emission line ratios like O32, R23, which are sensitive to ionization parameter and metallicity, and the Balmer decrement as an indicator of reddening. We find significant spatial variation in the reddening and the reddening-corrected O32 and R23 values which correspond to spreads of a few tenths of a dex in ionization parameter and metallicity. We also find clear evidence of a negative radial gradient in star formation in SDSS J2340+2947 and tentative evidence of one in SDSS J1723+3411, though its star formation is quite asymmetric. Finally, we find that reddening can vary enough spatially to make spatially-resolved reddening corrections necessary in order to characterize gradients in line ratios and the physical conditions inferred from them, necessitating the use of space-based IFUs for future work on larger, more statistically robust samples., Comment: 24 pages, including references, 6 tables, 17 figures, and appendix. Metallicity gradients are important diagnostics of galaxy evolution, because they record the history of events such as mergers, gas inflow and star-formation. However, the accuracy with which gradients can be measured is limited by spatial resolution and noise, and hence measurements need to be corrected for such effects. We use high resolution (~20 pc) simulation of a face-on Milky Way mass galaxy, coupled with photoionisation models, to produce a suite of synthetic high resolution integral field spectroscopy (IFS) datacubes. We then degrade the datacubes, with a range of realistic models for spatial resolution (2 to 16 beams per galaxy scale length) and noise, to investigate and quantify how well the input metallicity gradient can be recovered as a function of resolution and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) with the intention to compare with modern IFS surveys like MaNGA and SAMI. Given appropriate propagation of uncertainties and pruning of low SNR pixels, we show that a resolution of 3-4 telescope beams per galaxy scale length is sufficient to recover the gradient to ~10-20% uncertainty. The uncertainty escalates to ~60% for lower resolution. Inclusion of the low SNR pixels causes the uncertainty in the inferred gradient to deteriorate. Our ability to study the properties of the interstellar medium (ISM) in the earliest galaxies will rely on emission line diagnostics at rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) wavelengths. In this work, we identify metallicity-sensitive diagnostics using UV emission lines. We compare UV-derived metallicities with standard, well-established optical metallicities using a sample of galaxies with rest-frame UV and optical spectroscopy. We find that the He2-O3C3 diagnostic (He II 1640 / C III 1906,1909 vs. O III 1666 / C III 1906,1909) is a reliable metallicity tracer, particularly at low metallicity (12+log(O/H) < 8), where stellar contributions are minimal. We find that the Si3-O3C3 diagnostic (Si III 1883 / C III 1906,1909 vs. O III 1666 / C III 1906,1909) is a reliable metallicity tracer, though with large scatter (0.2-0.3 dex), which we suggest is driven by variations in gas-phase abundances. We find that the C4-O3C3 diagnostic (C IV 1548,1550 / O III 1666 vs. O III 1666 / C III 1906,1909) correlates poorly with optically-derived metallicities. We discuss possible explanations for these discrepant metallicity determinations, including the hardness of the ionizing spectrum, contribution from stellar wind emission, and non-solar-scaled gas-phase abundances. We derive new self-consistent theoretical UV, optical, and IR diagnostics for the ISM pressure and electron density in the ionized nebulae of star-forming galaxies. Our UV diagnostics utilize the inter-combination, forbidden and resonance lines of silicon, carbon, aluminum, neon, and nitrogen. We also calibrate the optical and IR forbidden lines of oxygen, argon, nitrogen and sulfur. We show that line ratios used as ISM pressure diagnostics depend on the gas-phase metallicity with a residual dependence on the ionization parameter of the gas. In addition, the traditional electron density diagnostic [S II] {\lambda}6731/[S II] {\lambda}6717 is strongly dependent on the gas-phase metallicity. We show how different emission-line ratios are produced in different ionization zones in our theoretical nebulae. The [S II] and [O II] ratios are produced in different zones, and should not be used interchangeably to measure the electron density of the gas unless the electron temperature is known to be constant. We review the temperature and density distributions observed within H II regions and discuss the implications of these distributions on measuring the electron density of the gas. Many H II regions contain radial variations in density. We suggest that the ISM pressure is a more meaningful quantity to measure in H II regions or galaxies. Specific combinations of line ratios can cover the full range of ISM pressures (4 < log(P/k) < 9). As H II regions become resolved at increasingly high redshift through the next generation telescopes, we anticipate that these diagnostics will be important for understanding the conditions around the young, hot stars from the early universe to the present day., Comment: 21 figures, 3 tables, 43 pages

We examine the diagnostic power of rest-frame ultraviolet (UV) nebular emission lines, and compare them to more commonly used rest-frame optical emission lines, using the test case of a single star-forming knot of the bright lensed galaxy RCSGA 032727-132609 at redshift z~1.7. This galaxy has complete coverage of all the major rest-frame UV and optical emission lines from Magellan/MagE and Keck/NIRSPEC. Using the full suite of diagnostic lines, we infer the physical properties: nebular electron temperature (T_e), electron density (n_e), oxygen abundance (log(O/H)), ionisation parameter (log(q)) and interstellar medium (ISM) pressure (log(P/k)). We examine the effectiveness of the different UV, optical and joint UV-optical spectra in constraining the physical conditions. Using UV lines alone we can reliably estimate log(q), but the same is difficult for log(O/H). UV lines yield a higher (~1.5 dex) log(P/k) than the optical lines, as the former probes a further inner nebular region than the latter. For this comparison, we extend the existing Bayesian inference code IZI, adding to it the capability to infer ISM pressure simultaneously with metallicity and ionisation parameter. We report the detection of extended Lyman-$\alpha$ emission from the host galaxy of SDSS~J2222+2745, a strongly lensed quasar at $z = 2.8$. Spectroscopic follow-up clearly reveals extended Lyman-$\alpha$ in emission between two images of the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). We reconstruct the lensed quasar host galaxy in the source plane by applying a strong lens model to HST imaging, and resolve spatial scales as small as $\sim$200 parsecs. In the source plane we recover the host galaxy morphology to within a few hundred parsecs of the central AGN, and map the extended Lyman-$\alpha$ emission to its physical origin on one side of the host galaxy at radii $\sim$0.5-2 kpc from the central AGN. There are clear morphological differences between the Lyman-$\alpha$ and rest-frame ultraviolet stellar continuum emission from the quasar host galaxy. Furthermore, the relative velocity profiles of quasar Lyman-$\alpha$, host galaxy Lyman-$\alpha$, and metal lines in outflowing gas reveal differences in the absorbing material affecting the AGN and host galaxy. These data indicate the presence of patchy local intervening gas in front of the central quasar and its host galaxy. This interpretation is consistent with the central luminous quasar being obscured across a substantial fraction of its surrounding solid angle, resulting in strong anisotropy in the exposure of the host galaxy to ionizing radiation from the AGN. The Epoch of Reionization (EoR) 21-cm signal is expected to become increasingly non-Gaussian as reionization proceeds. We have used semi-numerical simulations to study how this affects the error predictions for the EoR 21-cm power spectrum. We expect $SNR=\sqrt{N_k}$ for a Gaussian random field where $N_k$ is the number of Fourier modes in each $k$ bin. We find that non-Gaussianity is important at high $SNR$ where it imposes an upper limit $[SNR]_l$. For a fixed volume $V$, it is not possible to achieve $SNR > [SNR]_l$ even if $N_k$ is increased. The value of $[SNR]_l$ falls as reionization proceeds, dropping from $\sim 500$ at $\bar{x}_{HI} = 0.8-0.9$ to $\sim 10$ at $\bar{x}_{HI} = 0.15 $ for a $[150.08\, {\rm Mpc}]^3$ simulation. We show that it is possible to interpret $[SNR]_l$ in terms of the trispectrum, and we expect $[SNR]_l \propto \sqrt{V}$ if the volume is increased. For $SNR \ll [SNR]_l$ we find $SNR = \sqrt{N_k}/A $ with $A \sim 0.95 - 1.75$, roughly consistent with the Gaussian prediction. We present a fitting formula for the $SNR$ as a function of $N_k$, with two parameters $A$ and $[SNR]_l$ that have to be determined using simulations. Our results are relevant for predicting the sensitivity of different instruments to measure the EoR 21-cm power spectrum, which till date have been largely based on the Gaussian assumption., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letters.
