The indirect validation in increments (rings) counting by a precision analysis allowed to determine the daily deposition pattern in whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) otoliths during the larval and early juvenile stages. To compare the number of rings in each individual both sagittae otoliths (n= 71) and the readings by two independents readers (n= 27) were used. A slight variation of the optic focus allowed to eliminate sub-daily increments and obtain the best reading plane of the daily growth pattern. Between the 28th and 35th increment, approximately, the growing otoliths showed a rather diffuse zone where accessory nuclei around the main nucleus appeared. From the 35th increment onwards another deposition pattern markedly different from that of the accessory nuclei was noticed. The slopes of the linear regressions fitted between the otoliths of the pair and between the ones observed on the same otolith by the independent readers did not show significant differences with respect to 1. The analysis replicated and the intervention of two skilled independent readers constituted a consistent method to identify the daily deposition pattern in otoliths of the species larvae and early juveniles. This book reviews and summarizes the results and hypotheses raised by studies directly or indirectly dealing with the ecology of fronts and aims to identify the themes that connect them to produce a synthesis of this knowledge. Though not immediately perceived the ocean is highly structured and fronts are one of the most important components of its structural complexity. Marine fronts have been known since the early 20th Century, however, the more recent availability of high resolution satellite imagery, field measurements and numerical simulations have greatly advanced our understanding of their ecological impact. This work touches on topics such as front types, its biology and its comparisons with other bounderies at sea, as well as comparisons of fronts with terrestrial boundaries and the ‘ecotone’ concept. Furthermore, it also looks at the management and conservation of marine life.

Con el objetivo de caracterizar la zona de reproducción de peces de El Rincón, durante la Campaña EH-03/08 (noviembre de 2008) se capturaron peces adultos con una red de arrastre de fondo; se tomaron muestras de huevos y larvas de peces con una red Nackthai y se efectuaron mediciones de salinidad y temperatura empleando un CTD. La región se caracteriza por un frente oceanográfico formado por aguas diluidas por la descarga de los ríos Negro y Colorado; aguas de alta salinidad originadas en el Golfo San Matías; y aguas de salinidad intermedia de la plataforma continental. Se identificaron huevos y/o larvas de anchoíta; pez palo; mero; besugo; palometa; pampanito; lenguados y esciénidos; y hembras grávidas de pescadilla; besugo; pez palo; salmón; mero; palometa; lenguados; testolín; chanchito; trilla; cocherito y lucerna. En base a estos resultados y a la información existente, se propone que el establecimiento de un área de desove multiespecífica en la región está favorecido por la existencia de una celda de recirculación que produciría la retención de huevos y larvas en la zona, la abundancia de componentes del zooplancton que sirven de alimento a las larvas, y la cercanía con un área de cría de juveniles en la zona de marismas y canales de marea que va desde Bahía Blanca hasta la desembocadura del Río Negro. The whitemouth croaker, Micropogonias furnieri, is exploited by coastal fisheries in the Plata estuary. Its age structure shows the predominance of certain year classes, which are indicative of recruitment variability. The estuary is affected by river discharge variations associated with climatic signals (El Niño Southern Oscillation and others). We hypothesize that recruitment may correlate: (i) negatively with runoff (low runoff would promote the stronger retention of ichthyoplankton); (ii) positively with temperature (higher temperatures should enhance larvae survivorship and ⁄ or expand the spawning season); and (iii) positively with the wind zonal component (stronger onshore winds should facilitate the retention of ichthyoplankton). A time series of the relative cohort strengths was constructed for the 1938–2000 period from the age frequencies based on otolith readings. We performed a spectral analysis of the biological and physical series, and we searched for co-movements between them, which suggested the presence of mechanistic links. The results showed co-movements for recruitment, runoff and air temperature series at approximately 6.5, 3.4 and 2.4 yr; the temperature reinforced the runoff effects on recruitment at the 6.5- yr peak, and it weakened them at the 3.4- and 2.4-yr peaks. Wind variability was not relevant for the time scales studied. To explore the mechanisms of retention, we modeled the effects of the runoff fluctuations on the dispersal of the eggs. Both the statistical and modeling results supported the hypothesis that the effects of extreme river discharges on retention may regulate croaker recruitment by promoting high (low) recruitment during low (high) discharge periods. Estudamos a dieta da corvina (Micropogonias furnieri) (Pisces) em distintos regimes de salinidade e tipos de fundo no estuário do Rio da Prata e nas águas costeiras adjacentes do Uruguai. Analisamos 258 conteúdos estomacais de organismos com 6-67 cm de comprimento total (TL) e aplicamos um índice de importância relativa das presas (IA), com base na freqüência de ocorrência e biomassa. Análises multivariadas (ANOSIM, MDS) foram usadas para detectar diferenças nas dietas entre sítios amostrais. Micropogonias furnieri apresentou uma tendência de especialização em um único tipo de presas, no caso bivalves, embora se alimente secundariamente de outros invertebrados bênticos, como poliquetas e crustáceos. A dieta variou em função do tamanho dos organismos e das áreas amostrais. O bivalvo Mactra isabelleana foi a presa principal de corvinas maiores do que 10 cm TL (%IA = 96.68), enquanto misidáceos foram a presa principal de corvinas com menos de 10 cm TL (%IA = 85.3). As análises multivariadas definiram três grupos principais de corvinas alimentando-se principalmente de M. isabelleana (formas estuarinas e de fundos marinhos lamosos), misidáceos (fundos estuarinos lamosos) e Artemesia longinaris (fundos heterogêneos, marinhos ou estuarinos). Os três grupos correspondem às estratégias tróficas de especialização, generalização ou mista. A plasticidade no comportamento de alimentação pode ser um dos fatores responsáveis pela ampla distribuição geográfica da corvina-branca, viabilizada por distintos padrões de exploração das presas. We studied the diet of the whitemouth croaker (Micropogonias furnieri) (Pisces) in the Río de la Plata estuary and adjacent Uruguayan coastal waters. Fish were caught at different salinity ranges and bottom types. We analyzed 258 gut contents of whitemouth croaker (6-67 cm total length, TL) and calculated an index of relative importance of prey (IA) based on frequency of occurrence and biomass. Multivariate analyses were used to detect diet differences between sampling sites (ANOSIM, MDS). Micropogonias furnieri showed a tendency to specialization towards one single taxonomic prey type, bivalves, but also including other benthic invertebrates like polychaetes or crustaceans. The diet varied according to the size and area analyzed. The bivalve Mactra isabelleana was the main prey of croakers > 10 cm TL (%IA = 96.68), while mysids where the main prey of croakers < 10 cm TL (%IA = 85.3). Multivariate analyses defined three main groups of croakers which mainly feed on: M. isabelleana (estuarine and marine muddy bottoms), mysids (estuarine muddy bottoms) and Artemesia longinaris (marine and estuarine waters, heterogeneous bottoms). These three groups also represented distinct feeding behavior of croakers: specialization, generalization and mixed feeding strategies respectively. This plasticity in the feeding behavior could be one of the factors that allows for the extensive geographical distribution of whitemouth croaker, throughout different prey exploitation patterns.

El principal objetivo de esta tesis doctoral es analizar el flujo transoceánico entre los ecosistemas marinos alrededor del extremo sur de Sudamérica, utilizando observaciones hidrográficas históricas y recientes, y registros de especies de crustáceos (copépodos, anfípodos y eufáusidos). El análisis de las características e intercambio de las masas de agua entre las plataformas continentales del Pacífico SE y el Atlántico SO destaca el rol del océano Pacifico como principal fuente de dilución de aguas subantárticas a través del Estrecho de Magallanes (EM). Observaciones de alta resolución obtenidas a través de la boca oriental del EM sugieren que las aguas de baja salinidad características de la plataforma Atlántica proceden del margen norte de la boca atlántica del EM. El transporte geostrófico neto del Pacífico al Atlántico estimado a partir de dos relevamientos de alta resolución en esa región es 0.038-0.074 Sv (1 Sv = 10^6 m^3 s^-1). La distribución geográfica de las especies de crustáceos determinó nuevos patrones de distribución y áreas de endemismo en la Región Magallánica. Dicho análisis revela tres provincias biogeográficas y se reconocen nuevos distritos: Costa Atlántica (Golfo de San Jorge y de Cabo Blanco), Chiloé y Fueguía (Canales y Fiordos, Islas Malvinas, Banco Burdwood y zona de transición del Atlántico Sudoccidental). Este es el primer estudio que identifica áreas de endemismo para la región de Magallanes basadas en la fauna de crustáceos. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to analyze the transoceanic fluxes among marine ecosystems around the southern tip of South America, using historical and recent hydrographic observations and records of crustacean species (Amphipoda, Copepoda and Euphasida). The analysis of the caracteristics and exchange of water masses between the continental shelves of the SE Pacific and SW Atlantic underlines the role of the Pacific Ocean as the main source of dilution of subantarctic waters through the Magellan Strait (MS). The high resolution observations obtained through the eastern mouth of the MS suggest that the low salinity waters characteristic of the Atlantic shelf come from the northern margin of the Atlantic mouth of the MS. The geostrophic net transport from the Pacific to the Atlantic estimated from two high-resolution surveys in that region is 0.038-0.074 Sv (1 Sv = 10^6 m^3 s^-1). The geographical distribution of crustacean species determined new distribution patterns and areas of endemism in the Magellan region. This analysis reveals three biogeographic provinces and new districts are recognized: Atlantic Coast (Gulf of San Jorge and Cabo Blanco), Chiloé and Fueguía (Canals and Fjords, Malvinas Islands, Burdwood bank and Southwest Atlantic Transition Zone). Se estudiaron las interacciones bio-físicas de los estadios tempranos de corvina rubia en el estuario del plata para entender como toman ventaja de la dinámica estuarina mientras viajan desde el área de puesta a la de cría, durante la transición de larvas plantónicas a juveniles bentónicos. Los análisis usados incluyeron estudios de la distribución espacio-temporal; del crecimiento en busca de marcas de asentamiento en otolitos y del desarrollo relacionado con la metamorfosis y variaciones de la dieta y el nivel trófico. Las muestras y los datos provienen de muestreos verticales estratificados de 3 campañas oceanográficas (2005, 2006 y 2009). Los datos sobre distribución provienen también de una base de datos histórica. Los resultados demuestran que mecanismos de retención mantienen a las larvas y juveniles tempranos de corvina rubia (3-45 mm LE) moviéndose alternativamente a lo largo del frente salino de fondo, mezclando las clases de tallas.
