Motivated by recent inferred form of the halo occupation distribution (HOD) of X-ray selected AGNs, in the COSMOS field by Allevato et al. (2012), we investigate the HOD properties of moderate X-ray luminosity Active Galactic Nuclei (mXAGNs) using a simple model based on merging activity between dark matter halos (DMHs) in a $\Lambda$-CDM cosmology. The HODs and number densities of the simulated mXAGNs at $z=0.5$, under the above scenarios to compare with Allevato et al. (2012) results. We find that the simulated HODs of major and minor mergers, and the observed for mXAGNs are consistent among them. To date, 17 circumbinary planets have been discovered. In this paper, we focus our attention on the stability of the Kepler circumbinary planetary systems with only one planet, i.e. Kepler-16, Kepler-34, Kepler-35, Kepler-38, Kepler-64 and Kepler-413. In addition to their intrinsic interest, the study of such systems is an opportunity to test our understanding of planetary system formation and evolution around binaries. The investigation is done by means of numerical simulations. We perform numerical integrations of the full equations of motion of each system with the aim of checking the stability of the planetary orbit. The investigation of the stability of the above systems consists of three numerical experiments. In the first one we perform a long term (1Gyr) numerical integration of the nominal solution of the six Kepler systems under investigation. In the second experiment, we look for the critical semimajor axis of the six planetary orbits, and finally, in the third experiment, we construct two dimensional stability maps on the eccentricity-pericentre distance plane. Additionally, using numerical integrations of the nominal solutions we checked if this solutions were close to the exact resonance., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figure

It has been suggested that the ejection to interplanetary space of terrestrial crustal material, accelerated in a large impact, may result in the interchange of biological material between Earth and other Solar System bodies. In this paper, we analyze the fate of debris ejected from Earth by means of numerical simulations of the dynamics of a large collection of test particles. This allows us to determine the probability and conditions for the collision of ejecta with other planets of the Solar System. We also estimate the amount of particles falling-back to Earth as a function of time after being ejected. We find that, in general, the collision rates of Earth ejecta with Venus and the Moon, as well as the fall-back rates, are consistent with results reported in the literature. By considering a larger number of particles than in all previous calculations we have also determined directly the collision probability with Mars and, for the first time, computed collision probabilities with Jupiter. We find that the collision probability with Mars is greater than values determined from collision cross section estimations previously reported., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures & 1 table. We determine both representations of the Fundamental Plane [Re Sig^a Ie^b and Re (Sig^2/Ie)^lambda] and the luminosity-effective phase space density [L fe^(-gamma)] scaling relation for N-body remnants of binary mergers of spiral-like galaxies. The main set of merger simulations involves a mass-ratio of the progenitors in the range of about 1:1 to 1:5, harboring or not a bulge-like component, and are constructed using a cosmological motivated model. Equal-mass mergers are also considered. Remnants lead to average values for the scaling indices of ~1.6, ~0.6, ~0.7, and ~0.65. These values are consistent with those of K--band observations (Mobasher et al. 1999) of ellipticals: ~1.5, ~0.8, ~0.7, and ~0.60. The b index is, however, not well reproduced. This study does not allow us to establish a conclusive preference for models with or without a bulge as progenitors. Our results indicate that the L--fe and FP scalings might be determined to a large extent by dissipationless processes, a result that appears to be in contradiction to other dissipationless results., Comment: 8 pages and 2 figures. We model the interaction of the solar wind with the plasma tail of a comet by means of numerical simulations, taking into account the effects of viscous-like forces.A 2D hydrodynamical, two species, finite difference code has been developed for the solution of the time dependent continuity, momentum and energy conservation equations, as applied to the problem at hand. Velocity, density and temperature profiles across the tail are obtained. Several cases with different flow parameters are considered in order to study the relative importance of viscous-like effects and the coupling between species on the flow dynamics. Assuming a Mach number equal to 2 for the incident solar wind as it flows past the comet nucleus, the flow exhibits three transitions with location and properties depending on the Reynolds number for each species and on the ratio of the timescale for inter-species coupling to the crossing time of the free flowing solar wind. By comparing our results with the measurements taken in situ by the Giotto spacecraft during its flyby of comet Halley we constrain the flow parameters for both plasmas. In the context of our approximations, we find that our model is qualitatively consistent with the in situ measurements as long as the Reynolds number of the solar wind protons and of cometary H2O+ ions is low, less than 100, suggesting that viscous-like momentum transport processes may play an important role in the interaction of the solar wind and the plasma environment of comets., Comment: 26 pages, 11 figures, submitted to A&A

Sersic parameters characterising the density profiles of remnants formed in collision-less disc galaxy mergers are obtained; no bulge is included in our simulations. For the luminous component we find that the Sersic index is n ~ (1.5,5.3) with ~ 3 +/- 1 and an effective radius of R_e ~ (1.6,12.9) kpc with ~ 5 +/- 3 kpc. A strong correlation of n with the central projected density I_0 is found [n ~ I_0^(-0.14)] which is consistent with observations. No positive linear correlation between the size (R_e) and structure (n) of our remnants is found; we do not advocate the existence of this. The photometric plane (PHP) of the luminous component [n ~ R_e^(0.05) I_0^(0.15)] agrees well, within the uncertainties and the assumption of a constant mass-to-light ratio, with those observationally determined for ellipticals. We found that the surface defined by Sersic parameters (n, R_e, mu_0) in log-space is not a true plane, but a pseudo-plane with a small curvature at low values of n owed to intrinsic properties of the Sersic model. The dark haloes of the remnants have a 3-dimensional Sersic index of ~ 4 +/- 0.5 that are smaller than the ones obtained for dark haloes in LCDM cosmologies ~ 6 +/- 1. A tight dark Sersic ``plane'' (DSP) is also defined by the parameters of the remnants haloes with n \~ r_e^(0.07) rho_0^(0.10). We conclude that collision-less merger remnants of pure disc galaxies have Sersic properties and correlations consistent with those of observed in early-type galaxies and local remnants. It seems that a ``primordial'' bulge in spirals is not a necessary condition to form bona fide ellipticals on grounds of the Sersic properties of remnants., Comment: 10 pages, 10 figures, submitted to MNRAS

We present scaling relations between the virial velocity (V) and the one-dimensional central velocity dispersion (Sig0); the gravitational radius (Rv) and the effective radius (Re); and the total mass (M) and the luminous mass (ML) found in N-body simulations of binary mergers of spiral galaxies. These scalings are of the form V^2 ~ Sig0^alpha, Rv ~ Re^beta and M ~ ML^gamma. The particlar values obtained for (alpha,beta,gamma) depend on the method of fitting used [ordinary least-squares (ols) or orthogonal distance regression (odr)], the assumed profile [de Vaucouleurs (deV) or Sersic (S)], and the size of the radial interval where the fit is done. The alpha and gamma indexes turn out more sensitive to the fitting procedure, obtaining for the ols a mean alpha_ols=1.51 and gamma_ols=0.69, while for the odr alpha_odr=2.35 and gamma_odr=0.76. The beta index depends more on the adopted type of profile, with beta_deV=0.13 and beta_S=0.27. We conclude that dissipationless formed remnants of mergers have a strong breaking of structural and kinematical homology., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures. Accepted in RMxAA

Optical red spectra of a set of 18 bright barred spiral galaxies are presented. The study is aimed at determining the local kinematics, and the physical conditions of ionized gas in the compact nucleus (inside a diameter of 5") and in the circumnuclear regions (inside a diameter of 20"). Only 8 galaxies showed bright emission from their east and west side of the nucleus. The spectrum of each region was analized separately. In other 10 galaxies the line emission was so weak that we were only able to obtain an average spectrum of the central emission. No emission was detected in the remaining 8 galaxies. An estimate of the dynamical mass is presented based on the observed velocities in the circumnuclear regions. In NGC 4314 and NGC 6951, that show H_alpha emission distributed in circumnuclear ring structures, we determine the [NII]/H_alpha and [SII]/H_alpha ratios for the eastern and western regions of the rings. The velocity difference for the two sides is used to derive the rotation velocity of the gas around the compact nucleus. The ratio [NII]6583/H_alpha is a factor of 2 larger in the compact nucleus of NGC 6951 than in its western side. The two most common mass estimators that use velocity dispersions and positions of objects in a stellar system, the virial mass estimator (VME) and the projected mass estimator (PME), are revisited and tested using N-body experiments. We consider here only spherical, isolated, and isotropic velocity dispersion systems. We have found that the PME can overestimate masses by ~ 20%, for realistic cluster mass profiles, if applied only to regions around the total system's "effective" radius. The VME can yield a correct mass at different radii provided that the total potential energy term is correctly taken into account and the system is completely sampled; otherwise, it may lead to similar errors as the PME. A surface pressure (3PV) term recently alluded to be usually neglected when using the VME and therefore required as a correction term is here found not necessarily required, although it can be used to yield a reasonable correction term. The preferred method here, however, is the virial theorem due to its simplicity and better agreement with N-body experiments. The possible reasons for the mass discrepancies found when using the PME and the VME in some N-body simulations are also briefly discussed., Comment: 10 pages & 6 figures, uses epsf.sty.
