Owing to the correlation between acetone in human's exhaled breath (EB) and blood glucose, the development of EB acetone gas-sensing devices is important for early diagnosis of diabetes diseases. In this article, a noninvasive blood glucose detection device through acetone sensing in EB, based on an α-Fe 2 O 3 -multiwalled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) nanocomposite, was successfully developed. Different amounts of α-Fe 2 O 3 were added to the MWCNTs by a simple solution method. The optimized acetone gas sensor showed a response of 5.15 to 10 ppm acetone gas at 200 °C. Also, the fabricated sensor showed very good sensing properties even in an atmosphere with high relative humidity. Since the EB has high humidity, the proposed sensor is a promising device to exactly detect the amount of acetone in EB with high humidity. The sensor was powered by a 3200 mAh battery with the possibility of charging using mains electricity. To increase the reliability and calibration of the sensing device, a practical test was taken to detect acetone EB from 50 volunteers, and a deep learning algorithm (DLA) was used to detect the effect of various factors on the amount of acetone in each person's acetone EB. The proposed device with ±15 errors had almost 85% correct responses. Also, the proposed device had excellent response, short response time, good selectivity, and good repeatability, leading it to be a suitable candidate for noninvasive blood glucose sensing.

Wearable sweat sensors are reshaping healthcare monitoring, providing real-time data on hydration and electrolyte levels with user-friendly, noninvasive devices. This paper introduces a highly portable two-channel microfluidic device for simultaneous sweat sampling and the real-time detection of volatile organic compound (VOC) biomarkers. This innovative wearable microfluidic system is tailored for monitoring diabetes through the continuous and noninvasive tracking of acetone and ammonia VOCs, and it seamlessly integrates with smartphones for easy data management. The core of this system lies in the utilization of carbon polymer dots (CPDs) and carbon dots (CDs) derived from monomers such as catechol, resorcinol, o -phenylenediamine, urea, and citric acid. These dots are seamlessly integrated into hydrogels made from gelatin and poly(vinyl alcohol), resulting in an advanced solid-state fluorometric sensor coating on a cellulose paper substrate. These sensors exhibit exceptional performance, offering linear detection ranges of 0.05-0.15 ppm for acetone and 0.25-0.37 ppm for ammonia, with notably low detection limits of 0.01 and 0.08 ppm, respectively. Rigorous optimization of operational parameters, encompassing the temperature, sample volume, and assay time, has been undertaken to maximize device performance. Furthermore, these sensors demonstrate impressive selectivity, effectively discerning between biologically similar substances and other potential compounds commonly present in sweat. As this field matures, the prospect of cost-effective, continuous, personalized health monitoring through wearable VOC sensors holds significant potential for overcoming barriers to comprehensive medical care in underserved regions. This highlights the transformative capacity of wearable VOC sweat sensing in ensuring equitable access to advanced healthcare diagnostics, particularly in remote or geographically isolated areas.

A non-invasive capacitance instrument was embedded in the base of a vacuum-drying tray to monitor continuously the residual amount of solvent left in a pharmaceutical powder. Proof of concept was validated with Microcrystalline Cellulose laced with water, as well as water/acetone mixtures absorbed in a spray-dried Copovidone powder. To illustrate the role of impermeability of the base, we derive a model of vapor sorption that reveals the existence of a kinetic limit when solids are thinly spread, and a diffusion limit with greatly diminished effective diffusivity at large powder thickness. By monitoring the residual solvent content of powders, this new in situ technique offers advantages over indirect methods like mass spectrometry of vapor effluents, but without complications associated with probe fouling. Aim: To systematically examine the sample suitability and stability for volatile alcohols (methanol, ethanol and isopropanol with its metabolite acetone) and glycols (ethylene/propylene glycols, EG/PG) in different collection tubes., Method: Two pools of whole blood were created and spiked with two levels of volatile alcohols and EG/PG. The spiked whole blood was added to six different blood collection tubes and were kept at different storage conditions. An aliquot was prepared from baseline replicates. Concentrations of volatile alcohols and glycols were analysed by gas chromatography., Results: All blood collection tubes have demonstrated similar performance over different storage conditions, that is, to be statistically insignificant (p>0.05) with the only exception of PG at the high concentration of day 7 at 4°C condition (p<0.05 but clinically insignificant as

Human-borne acetone is a potent marker of lipid metabolism. Here, an enzyme immobilization method for secondary alcohol dehydrogenase (S-ADH), which is suitable for highly sensitive and selective biosensing of acetone, was developed, and then its applicability was demonstrated for spatiotemporal imaging of concentration distribution. After various investigations, S-ADH-immobilized meshes could be prepared with less than 5% variation by cross-linking S-ADH with glutaraldehyde on a cotton mesh at 40 °C for 15 min. Furthermore, high activity was obtained by adjusting the concentration of the coenzyme nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) solution added to the S-ADH-immobilized mesh to 500 μM and the solvent to a potassium phosphate buffer solution at pH 6.5. The gas imaging system using the S-ADH-immobilized mesh was able to image the decrease in NADH fluorescence (ex 340 nm, fl 490 nm) caused by the catalytic reaction of S-ADH and the acetone distribution in the concentration range of 0.1-10 ppm-v, including the breath concentration of healthy people at rest. The exhaled breath of two healthy subjects at 6 h of fasting was quantified as 377 and 673 ppb-v, which were consistent with the values quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry.

A variety of organic compounds in human exhaled breath were measured online by mass spectrometry using the fifth (206 nm) and fourth (257 nm) harmonic emissions of a femtosecond ytterbium (Yb) laser as the ionization source. Molecular ions were enhanced significantly by means of resonance-enhanced, two-color, two-photon ionization, which was useful for discrimination of analytes against the background. The limit of detection was 0.15 ppm for acetone in air. The concentration of acetone in exhaled breath was determined for three subjects to average 0.31 ppm, which lies within the range of normal healthy subjects and is appreciably lower than the range for patients with diabetes mellitus. Many other constituents, which could be assigned to acetaldehyde, ethanol, isoprene, phenol, octane, ethyl butanoate, indole, octanol, etc., were observed in the exhaled air. Therefore, the present approach shows potential for use in the online analysis of diabetes mellitus and also for the diagnosis of various diseases, such as COVID-19 and cancers.

Purpose: Determine the correct mathematical phase description for balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) signals in multi-compartment systems., Theory and Methods: Based on published bSSFP signal models, different phase descriptions can be formulated: one predicting the presence and the other predicting the absence of destructive interference effects in multi-compartment systems. Numerical simulations of bSSFP signals of water and acetone were performed to evaluate the predictions of these different phase descriptions. For experimental validation, bSSFP profiles were measured at 3T using phase-cycled bSSFP acquisitions performed in a phantom containing mixtures of water and acetone, which replicates a system with two signal components. Localized single voxel MRS was performed at 7T to determine the relative chemical shift of the acetone-water mixtures., Results: Based on the choice of phase description, the simulated bSSFP profiles of water-acetone mixtures varied significantly, either displaying or lacking destructive interference effects, as predicted theoretically. In phantom experiments, destructive interference was consistently observed in the measured bSSFP profiles of water-acetone mixtures, supporting the theoretical description that predicts such interference effects. The connection between the choice of phase description and predicted observation enables unambiguous experimental identification of the correct phase description for multi-compartment bSSFP profiles, which is consistent with the Bloch equations., Conclusion: The study emphasizes that consistent phase descriptions are crucial for accurately describing multi-compartment bSSFP signals, as incorrect phase descriptions result in erroneous predictions., (© 2024 The Authors. For hazardous gas monitoring and non-invasive diagnosis of diabetes using breath analysis, porous foams assembled by Co 3 O 4 nanoparticles were designed as sensing electrode materials to fabricate efficient yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ)-based acetone sensors. The sensitivity of the sensors was improved by varying the sintering temperature to regulate the morphology. Compared to other materials sintered at different temperatures, the porous Co 3 O 4 nanofoams sintered at 800 °C exhibited the highest electrochemical catalytic activity during the electrochemical test. The response of the corresponding Co 3 O 4 -based sensor to 10 ppm acetone was -77.2 mV and it exhibited fast response and recovery times. Moreover, the fabricated sensor achieved a low detection limit of 0.05 ppm and a high sensitivity of -56 mV/decade in the acetone concentration range of 1-20 ppm. The sensor also exhibited excellent repeatability, acceptable selectivity, good O 2 /humidity resistance, and long-term stability during continuous measurements for over 30 days. Moreover, the fabricated sensor was used to determine the acetone concentration in the exhaled breaths of patients with diabetic ketosis. The results indicated that it could distinguish between healthy individuals and patients with diabetic ketosis, thereby proving its abilities to diagnose and monitor diabetic ketosis. We investigated the applicability of proton transfer reaction-time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-TOF-MS) for quantitative analysis of mixtures comprising glycerin, acetol, glycidol, acetaldehyde, acetone, and propylene glycol. While PTR-TOF-MS offers real-time simultaneous determination, the method selectivity is limited when analyzing compounds with identical elemental compositions or when labile compounds present in the mixture produce fragments that generate overlapping ions with other matrix components. In this study, we observed significant fragmentation of glycerin, acetol, glycidol, and propylene glycol during protonation via hydronium ions (H 3 O + ). Nevertheless, specific ions generated by glycerin ( m / z 93.055) and propylene glycol ( m / z 77.060) enabled their selective detection. To thoroughly investigate the selectivity of the method, various mixtures containing both isotope-labeled and unlabeled compounds were utilized. The experimental findings demonstrated that when samples contained high levels of glycerin, it was not feasible to perform time-resolved analysis in H 3 O + mode for acetaldehyde, acetol, and glycidol. To overcome the observed selectivity limitations associated with the H 3 O + reagent ions, alternative ionization modes were investigated. The ammonium ion mode proved appropriate for analyzing propylene glycol ( m / z 94.086) and acetone ( m / z 76.076) mixtures. Concerning the nitric oxide mode, specific m / z were identified for acetaldehyde ( m / z 43.018), acetone ( m / z 88.039), glycidol ( m / z 73.028), and propylene glycol ( m / z 75.044). It was concluded that considering the presence of multiple product ions and the potential influence of other compounds, it is crucial to conduct a thorough selectivity assessment when employing PTR-TOF-MS as the sole method for analyzing compounds in complex matrices of unknown composition.

Health risks to humans after "fume and smell events", short-term incidents on aircrafts that are accompanied by unpleasant odour or visible smoke, remain a subject of controversy. We assessed exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOC) and organophosphorus compounds (OPC) by biomonitoring in 375 aircrew members after self-reported "fume and smell events" and in 88 persons of the general population. A total of 20 parameters were analysed in blood and urine by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry. Median levels of acetone in blood and urine and 2-propanol in blood were elevated in aircrews compared to controls (p < 0.0001). Additionally, elevated peak exposures, best estimated by the 95th percentiles, were observed in aircrews for n-heptane and n-octane in blood, and acetone, 2,5-hexanedione and o-cresol in urine. Only the maximum observed levels of 2,5-hexandione in urine (768 μg/L) and toluene in blood (77 μg/L) in aircrew members were higher than the current biological exposure indices (BEI® levels) (500 and 20 μg/L, respectively) of the American Conference of Governmental Industrial Hygienists (US-ACGIH) for workers occupationally exposed to n-hexane and toluene, two well-accepted human neurotoxicants. Low-level exposures to n-hexane and toluene could be also observed in controls. The majority of OPC parameters in urine, including those of neurotoxic ortho-isomers of tricresylphosphate, were below the limit of quantitation in both aircrews and controls. Diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA) is a life-threatening acute complication of diabetes characterized by the accumulation of ketone bodies in the blood. Breath acetone, a ketone, directly correlates with blood ketones. Therefore, monitoring breath acetone can significantly enhance the safety and efficacy of diabetes care. In this work, the design and fabrication of an InP/Pt/chitosan nanowire array-based chemiresistive acetone sensor is reported. By incorporation of chitosan as a surface-functional layer and a Pt Schottky contact for efficient charge transfer processes and photovoltaic effect, self-powered, highly selective acetone sensing is achieved. The sensor has exhibited an ultra-wide acetone detection range from sub-ppb to >100 000 ppm level at room temperature, covering those in the exhaled breath from healthy individuals (300-800 ppb) to people at high risk of DKA (>75 ppm). The nanowire sensor has also been successfully integrated into a handheld breath testing prototype, the Ketowhistle, which can successfully detect different ranges of acetone concentrations in simulated breath samples. Background: Acetone, isoprene, and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in exhaled breath have been shown to be biomarkers for many medical conditions. Researchers use different techniques for VOC detection, including solid phase microextraction (SPME), to preconcentrate volatile analytes prior to instrumental analysis by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). These techniques include a previously developed method to detect VOCs in breath directly using SPME, but it is uncommon for studies to quantify exhaled volatiles because it can be time consuming due to the need of many external/internal standards, and there is no standardized or widely accepted method. The objective of this study was to develop an accessible method to quantify acetone and isoprene in breath by SPME GC-MS., Results: A system was developed to mimic human exhalation and expose VOCs to a SPME fiber in the gas phase at known concentrations. VOCs were bubbled/diluted with dry air at a fixed flow rate, duration, and volume that was comparable to a previously developed breath sampling method. Identification of acetone and isoprene through GC-MS was verified using standards and observing overlaps in chromatographic retention/mass spectral fragmentation. Calibration curves were developed for these two analytes, which showed a high degree of linear correlation. Acetone and isoprene displayed limits of detection/quantification equal to 12 ppb/37 ppb and 73 ppb/222 ppb respectively. Quantification results in healthy breath samples (n = 15) showed acetone concentrations spanned between 71 ppb and 294 ppb, and isoprene varied between 170 ppb and 990 ppb. The application of artificial intelligence to point-of-care testing (POCT) disease detection has become a hot research field, in which breath detection, which detects the patient's exhaled VOCs, combined with sensor arrays of convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms as a new lung cancer detection is attracting more researchers' attention. However, the low accuracy, high-complexity computation and large number of parameters make the CNN algorithms difficult to transplant to the embedded system of POCT devices. A lightweight neural network (LTNet) in this work is proposed to deal with this problem, and meanwhile, achieve high-precision classification of acetone and ethanol gases, which are respiratory markers for lung cancer patients. Compared to currently popular lightweight CNN models, such as EfficientNet, LTNet has fewer parameters (32 K) and its training weight size is only 0.155 MB. LTNet achieved an overall classification accuracy of 99.06% and 99.14% in the own mixed gas dataset and the University of California (UCI) dataset, which are both higher than the scores of the six existing models, and it also offers the shortest training (844.38 s and 584.67 s) and inference times (23 s and 14 s) in the same validation sets. Compared to the existing CNN models, LTNet is more suitable for resource-limited POCT devices.

Sensitive and selective acetone detection is of great significance in the fields of environmental protection, industrial production, and individual health monitoring from exhaled breath. To achieve this goal, bimetallic Au@Pt core-shell nanospheres (BNSs) functionalized-electrospun ZnFe 2 O 4 nanofibers (ZFO NFs) are prepared in this work. Compared to pure NFs-650 analogue, the ZFO NFs/BNSs-2 sensor exhibits a stronger mean response (3.32 vs 1.84), quicker response/recovery speeds (33 s/28 s vs 54 s/42 s), and lower operating temperature (188 vs 273 °C) toward 0.5 ppm acetone. Note that an experimental detection limit of 30 ppb is achieved, which ranks among the best cases reported thus far. Besides the demonstrated excellent repeatability, humidity-enhanced response, and long-term stability, the selectivity toward acetone is remarkably improved after BNSs functionalization. Through material characterizations and DFT calculations, all these improvements could be attributed to the boosted oxygen vacancies and abundant Schottky junctions between ZFO NFs and BNSs, and the synergistic catalytic effect of BNSs. This work offers an alternative strategy to realize selective subppm acetone under high-humidity conditions catering for the future requirements of noninvasive breath diabetes diagnosis in the field of individual healthcare.

The plants that we consume in our daily diet and use as a risk preventer against many diseases have many biological and pharmacological activities. In this study, the phytochemical fingerprint and biological activities of Beta vulgaris L. leaf extract, which are widely consumed in the Black Sea region, were investigated. The leaf parts of the plant were dried in an oven at 35 °C and then ground into powder. The main constituents in B. vulgaris were identified by LC-MS/MS and GC-MS analyses. Phenolic content, betaxanthin and betacyanin levels were investigated in the extracts obtained using three different solvents. The biological activity of the extract was investigated by anti-microbial, anti-mutagenic, anti-proliferative and anti-diabetic activity tests. Anti-diabetic activity was investigated by in vitro enzyme inhibition and in-silico molecular docking was performed to confirm this activity. In the LC-MS analysis of B. vulgaris extract, a major proportion of p&#95;coumaric acid, vannilin, protecatechuic aldehyde and sesamol were detected, while the major essential oils determined by GC-MS analysis were hexahydrofarnesyl acetone and phytol. Among the solvents used, the highest extraction efficiency of 2.4% was obtained in methanol extraction, and 36.2 mg of GAE/g phenolic substance, 5.1 mg/L betacyanin and 4.05 mg/L betaxanthin were determined in the methanol extract. Beta vulgaris, which exhibited broad-spectrum anti-microbial activity by forming a zone of inhibition against all tested bacteria, exhibited anti-mutagenic activity in the range of 35.9-61.8% against various chromosomal abnormalities. Beta vulgaris extract, which did not exhibit mutagenic, sub-lethal or lethal effects, exhibited anti-proliferative activity by reducing proliferation in Allium root tip cells by 21.7%. 50 mg/mL B. vulgaris extract caused 58.9% and 55.9% inhibition of α-amylase and α-glucosidase activity, respectively. The interactions of coumaric acid, vanniline, hexahydrofarnesyl acetone and phytol, which are major compounds in phytochemical content, with α-amylase and α-glucosidase were investigated by in silico molecular docking and interactions between molecules via various amino acids were determined. Binding energies between the tested compounds and α-amylase were obtained in the range of - 4.3 kcal/mol and - 6.1 kcal/mol, while for α-glucosidase it was obtained in the range of - 3.7 kcal/mol and - 5.7 kcal/mol. The biological activities of B. vulgaris are closely related to the active compounds it contains, and therefore studies investigating the phytochemical contents of plants are very important. Background: Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) have been shown as promising biomarkers for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) diagnosis. We aimed to investigate the performance of VOCs for diagnosing early-stage HCC in patients at-risk for HCC., Methods: VOCs were identified in exhaled breath samples collected from 87 early-stage HCC patients, 90 cirrhotic patients, and 72 HBV-infected patients using thermal desorption-gas chromatography/field-asymmetric ion mobility spectrometry. The VOC levels were compared between the three groups. An association between VOCs and HCC was determined using logistic regression analysis. Diagnostic performance of VOCs was estimated using the AUROC and compared to serum alpha-fetoprotein (AFP)., Results: The levels of acetone monomer, dimethyl sulfide, 1,4-pentadiene, isopropyl alcohol, and acetone dimer were significantly different between the three groups. After adjusting for liver function test and AFP, acetone dimer was significantly associated with HCC. Acetone dimer significantly outperformed AFP with 86.2 % vs. 61.2 % sensitivity, 87.6 % vs. 66.2 % specificity, 86.9 % vs. 63.5 % for accuracy, and AUROC of 0.908 vs. 0.665, p = 0.007, <0.001, <0.001, and 0.001, respectively, for differentiating between HCC and cirrhosis., Conclusion: Acetone showed a better performance than AFP for diagnosing early HCC in at-risk patients. Breath analysis using gas sensors is an emerging method for disease screening and diagnosis. Since it is closely related to the lipid metabolism and blood ketone concentration of the body, the detection of acetone content in exhaled breath is helpful for the screening and monitoring of diabetes and ketosis. The development of an acetone sensor with high selectivity, stability, and low detection limit has been the research focus for this purpose. Here, we developed a mixed potential type acetone sensor based on Gd 2 Zr 2 O 7 solid electrolyte and CoSb 2 O 6 sensing electrode. The developed sensor exhibits an extremely low detection limit of 10 ppb, enabling linear detection for acetone in an extremely wide range of 10 ppb-100 ppm. The good results of systematic evaluation on selectivity, repeatability, and stability prove the superior reliability of the sensor, which is a prerequisite for the application in actual breath detection. The ability of the sensor to distinguish healthy people from diabetic ketosis patients was confirmed by using the sensor to detect the breath of healthy people and diabetic patients, proving the feasibility of the sensor in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetic ketosis.

Background and Aims: In recent years, noninvasive techniques are becoming conspicuous for diabetes detection. Sweat, tear, saliva, urine and breath-based methods showing prominent results in breath acetone detection which is considered as a biomarker of diabetes. A concrete relationship between breath acetone and BG helps in the development of devices for diabetes detection., Methods: The primary source for this study includes scholarly publications that primarily focus on the development of biosensors and systems for diabetes detection using acetone present in breath. Articles were analysed to examine various types of biosensors with their sensing materials to provide acetone detection limits. Recent noninvasive systems and products have been investigated and determine the relationship between breath acetone and BG levels., Results: Breath-based biosensor technologies are capable for diabetes detection. The acetone biosensor detection ranges from 100 ppb to 100 ppm, and it can applicable from room temperature to 400 °C. In healthy volunteers, acetone level ranges from 0.32 to 2.19 ppm, while patients with diabetes exhibit a wider range of 0.22-21 ppm depending on the biosensor, detection method, and clinical circumstances of patients and lab conditions., Conclusion: This manuscript presents an extensive analysis of breath-based biosensors and their potential for detection of diabetes. Acetone detection methods are promising but unable to provide concrete correlation between breath acetone and blood glucose levels. Exhaled breath analysis is evolving into an increasingly important non-invasive diagnostic tool. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath contain information about health status and are promising biomarkers for several diseases, including respiratory infections caused by bacteria. To monitor the composition of VOCs in breath or the emission of VOCs from bacteria, sensitive analytical techniques are required. Next to mass spectrometry, ion mobility spectrometry (IMS) is considered a promising analytical tool for detecting gaseous analytes in the parts per billion by volume to parts per trillion by volume range. This work presents a new, dual coupling of thermal desorption gas chromatography to a quadrupole mass spectrometer (MS) and an IMS by operating a simple splitter. Nearly identical retention times can be reached in the range of up to 30 min with slight deviations of 0.06 min-0.24 min. This enables the identification of unknown compounds in the IMS chromatogram using unambiguous mass spectral identification, as there are still no commercially available databases for IMS. It is also possible to discriminate one of the detectors using the splitter to improve detection limits. Using a test liquid mixture of seven ketones, namely 2-butanone, 2-pentanone, 2-hexanone, 2-heptanone, 2-octanone, 2-nonanone, and 2-decanone with a concentration of 0.01 g l -1 reproducibilities ranging from 3.0% to 7.6% for MS and 2.2%-5.3%, for IMS were obtained, respectively. In order to test the system optimized here for the field of breath analysis, characteristic VOCs such as ethanol, isoprene, acetone, 2-propanol, and 1-propanol were successfully identified in exhaled air using the dual detector system due to the match of the corresponding IMS, and MS spectra. The paper reports the designing and fabrication aspects of a high "Q = 492.3" Helmholtz photoacoustic (PA) cell employed for the trace level detection of acetone, a biomarker by using 266 nm- UV, Mid-IR (5.4-10.6 micron) and 0.11 Terahertz (THz) sources. The designed Helmholtz PA cell is made of Aluminum and possesses a natural frequency tunable between 1.4 to 4.4 kHz range using a movable piston arrangement of the microphone sensor. Numerous types of disorders, including diabetes, asthma, lung cancer, etc., can be diagnosed using the acetone concentration obtained through breath analysis. The comparative study is related to the response of different types of excitation mechanisms contributed by electronics, vibrational and rotational modes of acetone. The low-level detection (LoD) limit for acetone is of the order of 5.06 & 7.92 ppbV, and 15.3 pptV, respectively, in UV, Mid-IR, and THz region. A gas sensor array was developed and evaluated using four high-frequency quartz crystal microbalance devices (with a 30 MHz resonant frequency in fundamental mode). The QCM devices were coated with ethyl cellulose (EC), polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA), Apiezon L (ApL), and Apiezon T (ApT) sensing films, and deposited by the ultrasonic atomization method. The objective of this research was to propose a non-invasive technique for acetone biomarker detection, which is associated with diabetes mellitus disease. The gas sensor array was exposed to methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone biomarkers in four different concentrations, corresponding to 1, 5, 10, and 15 µL, at temperature of 22 °C and relative humidity of 20%. These samples were used because human breath contains them and they are used for disease detection. Moreover, the gas sensor responses were analyzed using principal component analysis and discriminant analysis, achieving the classification of the acetone biomarker with a 100% membership percentage when its concentration varies from 327 to 4908 ppm, and its identification from methanol, ethanol, and isopropanol.

Study aims were to investigate associations of hyperketolactia (HYKL) status of Holstein dairy cows between 6 and 60 d in milk (DIM), defined by milk acetone (mACE) and β-hydroxybutyrate (mBHB) content, with daily milk yield and composition. Milk samples (∼5.0 million) were collected over a 5-yr period (2014-2019) within the milk recording system in Poland. Concentrations of mACE and mBHB determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy were used to categorize samples into 4 ketolactia groups. Based on threshold values of ≥0.15 mmol/L mACE and ≥0.10 mmol/L mBHB, ketolactia groups were normoketolactia (NKL; mACE <0.15 mmol/L and mBHB <0.10 mmol/L), BHB hyperketolactia (HYKL BHB ; mACE <0.15 mmol/L and mBHB ≥0.10 mmol/L), ACE hyperketolactia (HYKL ACE ; mACE ≥0.15 mmol/L and mBHB <0.10 mmol/L), and ACE and BHB hyperketolactia (HYKL ACEBHB ; mACE ≥0.15 mmol/L and mBHB ≥0.10 mmol/L). To investigate ketolactia association with production outcomes, a linear model was developed, including ketolactia group, DIM, parity, their interactions, year-season as fixed effects, and random effects of herd and cow. Among all milk samples, 31.2% were classified as HYKL, and of these, 52.6%, 39.6%, and 7.8% were HYKL ACEBHB , HYKL BHB , and HYKL ACE , respectively. Ketolactia groups differed for all traits studied in all parities and DIM. Among HYKL groups, lowest milk yield was found in HYKL ACEBHB cows, except for 6 to 30 DIM in first- and second-lactation cows. Milk yield of HYKL BHB cows was higher than that of NKL cows until 20 to 30 DIM, and then it was lower than NKL cows. Milk yield of HYKL ACE cows was mostly lower than NKL cows. Energy-corrected milk (ECM) yield of HYKL ACEBHB cows was higher than that of NKL cows until 30 to 35 DIM for second lactation and third lactation or greater, and in the whole study period for first lactation. The yield of ECM for HYKL BHB cows was mostly higher than that of NKL cows, whereas HYKL ACE cows had higher ECM than NKL cows until 15 to 25 DIM and then was lower for the HYKL ACE group. Milk composition differed among HYKL groups. Highest milk fat (MF) and lowest milk lactose (ML) contents were observed in HYKL ACEBHB cows. Cows in HYKL ACEBHB and HYKL BHB groups had higher MF and lower milk protein (MP; except in 6-8 DIM in first lactation) and ML content than NKL cows. Milk fat content was higher in HYKL ACE than NKL cows in first lactation and during the first 30 to 40 DIM in older cows. Lactose content was lower in HYKL ACE than in NKL cows within 30 to 40 DIM; afterward it was higher in NKL cows. Lower MP content was found in HYKL ACE than in NKL cows, except during 6 to 9 DIM for cows in first lactation and third lactation or greater. In conclusion, HYKL is associated with altered milk production in all parities, but a range of these negative relations depends on ketone status addressing both ACE and BHB contents. Human skin emits a unique set of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). These VOCs can be probed in order to obtain physiological information about the individuals. However, extracting the VOCs that emanate from human skin for analysis is troublesome and time-consuming. Therefore, we have developed "Mass Specthoscope"─a convenient tool for rapid sampling and detecting VOCs emitted by human skin. The hand-held probe with a pressurized tip and wireless button enables sampling VOCs from surfaces and their transfer to the atmospheric pressure chemical ionization source of quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer. The system was characterized using chemical standards (acetone, benzaldehyde, sulcatone, α-pinene, and decanal). The limits of detection are in the range from 2.25 × 10 -5 to 3.79 × 10 -5 mol m -2 . The system was initially tested by detecting VOCs emanating from porcine skin spiked with VOCs as well as unspiked fresh and spoiled ham. In the main test, the skin of nine healthy participants was probed with the Mass Specthoscope. The sampling regions included the armpit, forearm, and forehead. Numerous skin-related VOC signals were detected. In the final test, one participant ingested a fenugreek drink, and the participant's skin surface was probed using the Mass Specthoscope hourly during the 8 h period. The result revealed a gradual release of fenugreek-related VOCs from the skin. We believe that this analytical approach has the potential to be used in metabolomic studies and following further identification of disease biomarkers─also in noninvasive diagnostics.

Analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOC) within exhaled breath is subject to numerous sources of methodological and physiological variability. Whilst breathing pattern is expected to influence the concentrations of selected exhaled VOCs, it remains challenging to investigate respiratory rate and depth accurately in awake subjects. Online breath sampling was performed in 20 mechanically ventilated patients using proton transfer reaction time-of-flight mass spectrometry (PTR-ToF-MS). The effect of variation in respiratory rate (RR) and tidal volume (TV) on the VOC release profiles was examined. A panel of nineteen VOCs were selected, including isoprene, acetone, propofol, volatile aldehydes, acids and phenols. Variation in RR had the greatest influence on exhaled isoprene levels, with maximum and average concentrations being inversely correlated with RR. Variations in RR had a statistically significant impact on acetone, C3-C7 linear aldehydes and acetic acid. In comparison, phenols (including propofol), C8-C10 aldehydes and C3-C6 carboxylic acids were not influenced by RR. Isoprene was the only compound to be influenced by variation in TV. These findings, obtained under controlled conditions, provide useful guidelines for the optimisation of breath sampling protocols to be applied on awake patients.

Background: Tomato seed oil (TSO) was obtained using a combined method of pre-keeping in solvent and Soxhlet extraction. A considerable oil yield could not be obtained using samples without drying or grinding, with dried or non-dried seeds, which were not kept in solvent (<2%). For this purpose, oil yield, physicochemical properties, oxidation values, spectrophotometric indices and fatty acid composition of the samples extracted with acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and petroleum ether were determined., Results: Oils obtained by the extraction of petroleum ether (20.36 meq g O 2 kg -1 ) and ethyl acetate (11.16 meq g O 2 kg -1 ) were found to have very high peroxide values. Besides, a high-quality edible oil should have an anisidine value (p-AnV) of less than 10. Samples extracted with chloroform alone had a p-AnV of 8.86, while slightly higher values were found for other samples (P < 0.05). Chloroform (20.50) and acetone (23.06) both gave the best results and met the expected value, with total oxidation value below 30. Finally, the highest levels of primary fatty acids observed were linoleic acid (32.77-41.95%), palmitic acid (23.75-32.27%), oleic acid (16.17-24.52%), and stearic acid (7.76-12.82%)., Conclusion: This process is applicable to recycling tomato sauce waste and essential oil. Carbonyl compounds are critical components of volatile organic compounds, which significantly participate in the photochemical formation of atmospheric ozone and thus threaten human health. Here we measured 15 C 1 -C 8 carbonyl compounds at an urban site in Linyi, a typically industrialised city in the North China Plain (NCP). Formaldehyde (3.89 ppbv), acetaldehyde (1.66 ppbv) and acetone (2.03 ppbv) were found to be the top three carbonyl compounds, accounting for 76.11% of the total concentration of carbonyl compounds. Anthropogenic secondary formation was recognised as the main source of the top five carbonyl compounds, which included formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, acetone, butyraldehyde and benzaldehyde, and accounted for 46-54% of all sources. Alkenes were the most important precursors of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde, suggesting that reducing the emission of alkenes from anthropogenic sources is an effective way to control carbonyl compound pollution in Linyi. Furthermore, the photolysis of carbonyl compounds played a significant role (68-75%) as sources of HO 2 • and RO 2 • and thus made a significant contribution (14.6%) to the photochemical formation of O 3 . The present study shows the chemical profile, antimicrobial, antiproliferative, and apoptotic effects of Stemodia viscosa extracts. Thirteen bioactive compounds were identified in the 80 % ethanolic extract by GC/MS analysis. The acetone extract exhibited a higher content of flavonoids and phenols of 805.10 μg QE/mg DW and 89.31 μg GAE/mg DW extracts, respectively. Furthermore, the acetone extract possessed the highest antioxidant activity (IC 50 =9.96 μg/mL). The 80 % ethanolic extract exhibited significant antimicrobial activity; the highest activity was observed against Staphylococcus aureus with a zone of inhibition of 25±0.51 mm, MIC value of 4 mg/mL, and MBC value of 8 mg/mL. The antiproliferative results revealed the presence of anticancer activity with an IC 50 =91.562 and 74.362 μg/mL against the B16F10 skin and COLO205 colon cancer cells, respectively. The flow cytometric analysis shows that the plant extracts cause cancer cell death through the induction of apoptosis. Liver diseases (e.g., cirrhosis, cancer) cause more than two million deaths per year worldwide. This is partly attributed to late diagnosis and insufficient screening techniques. A promising biomarker for noninvasive and inexpensive liver disease screening is breath limonene that can indicate a deficiency of the cytochrome P450 liver enzymes. Here, we introduce a compact and low-cost detector for dynamic and selective breath limonene sensing. It comprises a chemoresistive sensor based on Si/WO 3 nanoparticles pre-screened by a packed bed Tenax separation column at room temperature. We demonstrate selective limonene detection down to 20 parts per billion over up to three orders of magnitude higher concentrated acetone, ethanol, hydrogen, methanol, and 2-propanol in gas mixtures, as well as robustness to 10-90% relative humidity. Most importantly, this detector recognizes the individual breath limonene dynamics of four healthy volunteers following the ingestion (swallowing or chewing) of a limonene capsule. Limonene release and subsequent metabolization are monitored from breath measurements in real time and in excellent agreement ( R 2 = 0.98) with high-resolution proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry. This study demonstrates the potential of the detector as a simple-to-use and noninvasive device for the routine monitoring of limonene levels in exhaled breath to facilitate early diagnosis of liver dysfunction.

A nano-enabled low-trace monitoring system for acetone has the potential to revolutionize breath omics-based non-invasive diagnosis of human diabetes and environmental monitoring technologies. This unprecedented study presents the state-of-the-art facile and economic template-assisted hydrothermal route to fabricate novel CuMoO 4 nanorods for room temperature breath and airborne acetone detection. Physicochemical attribute analysis reveals the formation of crystalline CuMoO 4 nanorods with diameters ranging from 90 to 150 nm, and an optical band gap of approximately 3.87 eV. CuMoO 4 nanorods-based chemiresistor demonstrates excellent acetone monitoring performance, with a sensitivity of approximately 33.85 at a concentration of 125 ppm. Acetone detection is rapid, with a response time of 23 s and fast recovery within 31 s. Furthermore, the chemiresistor exhibits long-term stability and selectivity towards acetone, compared to other interfering volatile organic compounds (VOCs) commonly found in human breath such as ethanol, propanol, formaldehyde, humidity, and ammonia. The linear detection range of acetone from 25 to 125 ppm achieved by the fabricated sensor is well-suited for human breath-based diagnosis of diabetes. This work represents a significant advancement in the field, as it offers a promising alternative to time-consuming and costly invasive biomedical diagnostics, with the potential for application in cleanroom facilities for indoor contamination monitoring. The objective of this study was to evaluate phytochemicals present in the resin of Garcinia indica (Gamboge). We assessed the phytochemical constituents and antioxidant potential of acetone, methanol, and water extracts of resin. Acetone and methanol extracts contain a high amount of phenolics (183.90 and 182.85 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalent)/g) and flavonoids (72.65 and 71.33 mg QE (quercetin equivalent)/g), respectively, whereas methanol extract had the highest 7.62 mg AE (atropine equivalent)/g of alkaloid. GC-MS analysis of acetone extract identified 15 compounds and the majority of them were terpenoids, and 9,19-cyclo-25,26-epoxyergostan-3-ol,4,4,14-trimethyl-, acetate was the major compound among all terpenoids. Both acetone and methanol extracts showed excellent antioxidant activity as assessed by DPPH, total antioxidant activity, and FRAP assays. Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are byproducts from metabolic pathways that can be detected in exhaled breath and have been reported as biomarkers for different diseases. The gold standard for analysis is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS), which can be coupled with various sampling methods. The current study aims to develop and compare different methods for sampling and preconcentrating VOCs using solid-phase microextraction (SPME). An in-house sampling method, direct-breath SPME (DB-SPME), was developed to directly extract VOCs from breath using a SPME fiber. The method was optimized by exploring different SPME types, the overall exhalation volume, and breath fractionation. DB-SPME was quantitatively compared to two alternative methods involving the collection of breath in a Tedlar bag. In one method, VOCs were directly extracted from the Tedlar bag (Tedlar-SPME) and in the other, the VOCs were cryothermally transferred from the Tedlar bag to a headspace vial (cryotransfer). The methods were verified and quantitatively compared using breath samples ( n = 15 for each method respectively) analyzed by GC-MS quadrupole time-of-flight (QTOF) for compounds including but not limited to acetone, isoprene, toluene, limonene, and pinene. The cryotransfer method was the most sensitive, demonstrating the strongest signal for the majority of the VOCs detected in the exhaled breath samples. However, VOCs with low molecular weights, including acetone and isoprene, were detected with the highest sensitivity using the Tedlar-SPME. On the other hand, the DB-SPME was less sensitive, although it was rapid and had the lowest background GC-MS signal. Overall, the three breath-sampling methods can detect a wide variety of VOCs in breath. The cryotransfer method may be optimal when collecting a large number of samples using Tedlar bags, as it allows the long-term storage of VOCs at low temperatures (-80 °C), while Tedlar-SPME may be more effective when targeting relatively small VOCs. The DB-SPME method may be the most efficient when more immediate analyses and results are required.

Urinary acetone in urine is produced from fat metabolism in human body, which can be accelerated in diabetic patients because of insufficient utilization and storage of glucose. In this study, we tried to develop a novel diagnosis method of type 2 diabetes (T2D) through sniffing urinary acetone by a proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry (PTR-MS). A total of 180 T2D patients and 180 healthy volunteers were recruited from three hospitals for multicenter study. Urine samples were collected in the morning when donators were fasting and stored in glass bottles. Acetone in the headspace of these bottles was qualitatively and quantitatively detected by the PTR-MS in 8 h. Using a threshold of 690.1 ppbv, a diagnostic model was established using urinary acetone with an accuracy of 81.3% (sensitivity: 73.3%, specificity: 89.3%) in hospital Ⅰ. In the verification studies, the accuracies were 92.5% (sensitivity: 88.7%, specificity: 96.2%) in hospital Ⅱ and 83.7% (sensitivity: 76.9%, specificity: 90.4%) in hospital Ⅲ, respectively. The accuracy is comparable to that of clinically used diagnosis methods, fasting plasma glucose (FPG), oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT), and glycosylated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) test. The sensitivity for 35 newly diagnosed patients was 85.7%. The newly developed technology is completely non-invasive and much more rapid than clinical FPG, OGTT, and HbA1c tests. It has a promising prospect in clinical use. The stilbene-rich acetone fraction in high yield (6.6 %, PEAS) of Passiflora edulis Sims was prepared and evaluated for neuroprotective activity in murine Alzheimer's disease model induced by aluminum chloride and D-galactose. The phytochemical and HPLC-DAD-MS analysis of the polyphenolic stilbene-rich acetone fraction showed that it contained different stilbenes including trans-piceatannol, scirpusins A-B and cassigarol E. The total phenolic content (TPC) of PEAS was 413.87±1.71 mg GAE eqv/g. The neuroprotective activity of PEAS is typically presented in the Morris water maze-reference Spatial Memory test, where the Alzheimer's mice treated at 100 mg/kg (Alz-ED1) and 200 mg/kg (Alz-ED2) spent less than 47 % and 66 % of the time, respectively, than the Alzheimer's model mice (Alz). Two simple stilbenes, trans-piceatannol and trans-resveratrol, showed selectively inhibitory activity in silico against acetylcholinesterase (AChE). Two stilbene dimers, cassigarol E and scirpusin A, exhibited low nanomolar inhibitory potential against AChE and butyrylcholinesterase (BChE), significantly lower than those of the positive control, donepezil and tacrine. These findings suggest that the stilbenes from P. edulis seeds, particularly the stilbene dimers, warrant further investigation as potential neuroprotective candidates in the prevention of cognitive deficits associated with Alzheimer's disease., (© 2023 Wiley-VHCA AG, Zurich, Switzerland.)

Petioles of betel leaf (BLP) are the major industrial by-products of betel leaf industries sold at throwaway prices or used as cattle feed. The present work was taken up to evaluate suitable solvent based on yield, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties to isolate extract of BLP using the Shannon entropy-TOPSIS method. Four solvents were chosen for the extraction process: hexane, toluene + ethanol (2:1), acetone, and ethanol. The findings showed that ethanol-based BLP extract had the highest TPC value, measuring 2193.71 ± 0.17 mg of gallic acid equivalence/g of dry extract, while acetone-based extracts had the highest TFC value, measuring 8.03 mg of quercetin equivalent/g of dry extract. Radical scavenging activities like DPPH (IC 50  = 52.44 μg/mL), ABTS (IC 50  = 62.41 μg/mL), and FRAP (8.03 mg QE/g of dry extract) were found best for acetone extract. The antibacterial study of the extracts revealed that acetone extract was more sensitive to Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial strains followed by ethanol, toluene + ethanol, and hexane extracts. Among five foodborne bacteria, B. subtilis showed the highest susceptibility against all extracts. GC-MS analysis showed that acetoxychavicol acetate (31.27%) (PubChem ID: 119,104), germacrene D (7.24%) (PubChem Id: 531,750), isoxylic acid (22.56%) (PubChem ID: 11,892), and cis-1,2-indandiol (43.92%) (PubChem ID: 20,758) are four major compounds among 22 components. TOPSIS analysis revealed that acetone extract had the highest relative closeness value (0.71) followed by ethanol (0.65), toluene + ethanol (0.53), and hexane (0.32). These results indicate that acetone extract of BLP can be considered an alternative to synthetic active ingredients in the future. Field measurements of atmospheric carbonyl compounds (carbonyls) and essential precursors of O 3 were carried out in the urban area of Linfen City (Linfen) where serious O 3 pollution has occurred in recent years due to its unique terrain. Carbonyls were sampled using an automatic carbonyl sampler in August 2019 to determine their pollution characteristics and sources. An average concentration of ten carbonyls was 27 ± 5.7 μg m -3 detected using an HPLC-UV system. The concentrations of most detected carbonyls in August were significantly higher than those in the winter months in China. Acetone, formaldehyde and acetaldehyde were the most abundant species, accounting for 73% of all detected carbonyls. Formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and methacrolein (MACR) were the most significant contributors to OH• reactivity and ozone generation, indicating that these three carbonyls were the key species influencing the production of O 3 . The concentrations of formaldehyde, acetaldehyde, and MACR showed similar diurnal variations on most days, with high values during the daytime reaching a peak at 10:00. However, the concentrations of the latter two species varied less than that of formaldehyde during the day. The acetone concentration generally increased continuously from morning to night, with the maximum value around 22:00. The C1/C2 ratio in summer was higher than that in winter. These results indicated that the carbonyls in Linfen were not only affected by anthropogenic sources such as vehicle exhaust but also by secondary photochemical production. The results of formaldehyde source apportionment showed that the contributions of background, primary, and secondary sources to the observed formaldehyde concentration were 27.6%, 36.6%, and 35.8%, respectively. Breath acetone (BrAC) detection presents a promising scheme for noninvasive monitoring of metabolic health due to its close correlation to diets and exercise-regulated lipolysis. Herein, we report a Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene-based wireless facemask for on-body BrAC detection and real-time tracking of lipid metabolism, where Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene serves as a versatile nanoplatform for not only acetone detection but also breath interference filtration. The incorporation of in situ grown TiO 2 and short peptides with Ti 3 C 2 T x MXene further improves the acetone sensitivity and selectivity, while TiO 2 -MXene interfaces facilitate light-assisted response calibration. To further realize wearable breath monitoring, a miniaturized flexible detection tag has been integrated with a commercially available facemask, which enables facile BrAC detection and wireless data transmission. Through the hierarchically designed filtration-detection-calibration-transmission system, we realize BrAC detection down to 0.31 ppm (part per million) in breath. On-body breath tests validate the facemask in dynamically monitoring of lipid metabolism, which could guide dieter, athletes, and fitness enthusiasts to arrange diets and exercise activities. The abatement of indoor volatile organic compounds (VOCs) represents a major challenge due to their environmental risk, wide nature and concentration variability. Biotechnologies represent a cost-effective, robust and sustainable platform for the treatment of hazardous VOCs at low and fluctuating concentrations. However, they have been scarcely implemented for indoor air purification. Thus, little is known about the influence of the reactor configuration or the VOC nature and concentration variability on the removal, resilience and the microbial population of bioreactor configurations susceptible to be implemented, both in indoors and industrial environments. The present study aims at comparing the removal performance of four VOCs with different hydrophobicity and molecular structure -acetone, n-hexane, α-pinene and toluene-at two inlet concentrations (5 and 400 mg m -3 ), which mimics the concentrations of contaminated indoor and industrial air. To this aim a stirred tank, flat biofilm and latex-based biocoated flat bioreactor were comparatively evaluated. The results demonstrated the superior performance of the stirred tank reactor for the removal of hydrophilic VOCs at high inlet concentrations, which achieved removals >99% for acetone and toluene. At low concentrations, the removal efficiencies of acetone, toluene and α-pinene were >97% regardless of the bioreactor configuration tested. The most hydrophobic gas, n-hexane, was more efficiently removed in the flat biofilm reactor without latex. The microbial community analyses showed that the presence of VOCs as the only carbon and energy source didn't promote the growth of dominant bacterial members and the populations independently evolved in each reactor configuration and operation mode. Calycopteris floribunda Lam. is a potent medicinal woody climber that belongs to Combretaceae. This plant is usually found in dry deciduous tropical forests and is used in various medicinal practices like Ayurveda, Unani and Sidda. Whole plant and its different parts like leaves, flowers and stem are used in the treatment of diarrhoea, dysentery, jaundice and malaria. It is also have anthelminthic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, hepatoprotective and anticancerous activities. Knowing its medicinal properties, the present study is undertaken to investigate the preliminary phytochemical constituents and bioactive compounds of flower extracts by GC-MS. GC-MS analysis of flower extracts revealed the presence of over all 41 compounds, of which, acetone and ethanol extracts showed the presence of 13 compounds each, chloroform extract 8 and petroleum ether extract 7 compounds. Some compounds were common in two and three extracts only. The significant bioactive compounds identified are 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic acid (59.81%) in chloroform extract, triterpene lupeol (34.98%) in ethanol extract, tetratetracontane (26.99%) in petroleum ether extract and gamma sitosterol (22.04%) in acetone extract., (© 2022. In the quest for effective gas sensors for breath analysis, magnetoelastic resonance-based gas sensors (MEGSs) are remarkable candidates. Thanks to their intrinsic contactless operation, they can be used as non-invasive and portable devices. However, traditional monitoring techniques are bound to slow detection, which hinders their application to fast bio-related reactions. Here we present a method for real-time monitoring of the resonance frequency, with a proof of concept for real-time monitoring of gaseous biomarkers based on resonance frequency. This method was validated with a MEGS based on a Metglass 2826 MB microribbon with a polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) nanofiber electrospun functionalization. The device provided a low-noise (RMS = 1.7 Hz), fast (<2 min), and highly reproducible response to humidity (Δf = 46−182 Hz for 17−95% RH), ammonia (Δf = 112 Hz for 40 ppm), and acetone (Δf = 44 Hz for 40 ppm). These analytes are highly important in biomedical applications, particularly ammonia and acetone, which are biomarkers related to diseases such as diabetes. Furthermore, the capability of distinguishing between breath and regular air was demonstrated with real breath measurements. In this work, hydrophobic magnetic deep eutectic solvents (HMDESs) were used in the development of a simple and rapid dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) approach coupled to high performance liquid chromatography with UV detection (HPLC-UV) for the determination of ten organic contaminants including five polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, four UV filters, and a pesticide from water at trace levels. The HMDESs were prepared by mixing a hydrogen bond acceptor, metal halide salt, and hydrogen bond donor in suitable molar ratios. Two HMDESs, 2 tetraoctylammonium bromide ([N 8888 + ][Br - ]): cobalt chloride (CoCl 2 ): 4 octanoic acid (OA) and 3 trioctylphosphine oxide (TOPO): neodymium chloride (NdCl 3 ): 3 OA, offered the highest analyte extraction efficiency overall and were chosen as suitable solvents for validation of the microextraction method. Under optimized extraction conditions, the method required 30 µL of HMDES as extraction solvent, acetone (87.5 µL) as disperser solvent, a NaCl concentration of 30% (w/v), and an extraction time of 120 s at 20°C. Enrichment factors of the analytes ranged from 44.6 for 3-(4-methylbenzylindene) camphor to 66.0 for 2-ethylhexyl-4-(dimethyl)aminobenzoate. The method provided low limits of detection (LODs) ranging from 0.5 to 4.5 µg L -1 , and acceptable precision, with RSD values lower than 9.6%. Many solid-phase microextraction (SPME) sorbents have been developed from aerogels because of their low densities, large surface areas, and high porosities. Melamine-formaldehyde (MF) aerogel, made from melamine and formaldehyde by a sol-gel reaction, is one of the typical organic aerogels. MF aerogel has better mechanical strength, chemical stability and extraction performance than inorganic aerogels. The performance of the aerogel is limited in some fields, while composite aerogels can meet different requirements such as good mechanical strength and strong adsorption performance. Graphene oxide (GO) is a two-dimensional nanomaterial composed of a single layer of carbon atoms and provides π-π interaction by a large π-electron. In addition, the oxygen-containing groups at the edge of the lamellar structure improve the hydrophilicity of the material and can interact with various compounds. To improve the extraction performance of MF aerogel for polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), GO/MF aerogels were prepared by functionalizing MF aerogel with GO. In this study, 1.2612 g of melamine and 80 mg of sodium carbonate were dissolved in 30 mL of water, and the mixture was heated to 80 ℃ under stirring. Then, 2.8 mL formaldehyde solution (37%) was slowly added, and a clear solution was obtained gradually. Next, 50 mg of GO powder was ultrasonically dispersed in 10.0 mL of water and evenly mixed with the above solution. After adjusting the pH to 1.5, the sol-gel process was performed for 48 h, then the gel was aged at room temperature for 24 h. The gel was then soaked in ethanol, acetone, and cyclohexane in turn to replace the solvent. Finally, the GO/MF aerogel was obtained by freeze-drying for 24 h. The GO/MF aerogel was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photoelectric spectroscopy (XPS), confirming that GO was successfully introduced into MF aerogel, while retaining its three-dimensional network and porous structure. GO/MF aerogel was coated onto the surface of a stainless steel wire to be used as sorbent. Four such wires were placed into a polyetheretherketone (PEEK) tube (0.75 mm i. d., 30 cm length) for in-tube (IT) SPME. The tube was combined with a high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) unit to construct an IT-SPME-HPLC online system. When the six-way valve was in the Load state, sample solution achieved online enrichment with analytes while it flowed through the extraction tube. After extraction, the valve was turned to the Inject state, and the analytes were eluted into the chromatographic column by the mobile phase at a flow rate of 1.0 mL/min for separation and detection with the detector. Under the same extraction conditions (sampling volume=30 mL, sampling rate=1.00 mL/min, and concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs, viz. naphthalene (Nap), acenaphthylene (Acy), acenaphthene (Ace), fluorine (Flu), phenanthrene (Phe), anthracene (Ant), fluoranthene (Fla) and pyrene (Pyr))=5.00 μg/L), GO/MF aerogel-based tube was compared with that of MF aerogel-based tube. GO enhanced the enrichment efficiency of MF aerogel towards PAHs from 1.1 to 2.5 times, due to the increased number of adsorption sites and enhanced π-π interaction with PAHs. IT-SPME was affected by the sampling volume, sampling rate, concentration of organic solvent in sample, desorption solvent, desorption rate, and desorption time. To obtain accurate results, the main extraction and desorption conditions (sampling volume, sampling rate, organic solvent concentration, desorption time) were investigated carefully. As the sampling volume in the extraction tube was increased, the extraction efficiency was found to increase gradually until saturation. In this study, the extraction efficiency was investigated for sampling volumes ranging from 30 to 80 mL, and 70 mL was selected as a suitable sampling volume to achieve satisfactory extraction efficiency. The sampling rate affects not only the extraction efficiency, but also the extraction time. When the sample flows through the extraction tube at a low rate, it requires a long test time. Although the increase in sampling rate reduces the extraction time, it often decreases extraction efficiency. In addition, large sampling rate leads to high pressure in the tube, which in turn reduces the service life of the tube. Therefore, the effect of sampling rate (1.25-2.50 mL/min) on extraction efficiency was investigated, and good extraction efficiency and short test time were achieved when the sampling rate was 2 mL/min. High hydrophobic PAHs have poor solubility in water. An appropriate amount of organic solvent in the sample solution can improve the solubility of PAHs to obtain accurate analytical results. However, the extraction efficiency was affected by the added organic solvent. Thus, the effect of volume fraction of methanol (0, 0.5%, 1%, 2%, 3%, and 5%, v/v) on the extraction efficiency was investigated. The sample solution without methanol afforded better extraction efficiency and satisfactory repeatability. After online extraction, the desorption directly affects the desorption efficiency. The peak areas of the eight PAHs were investigated with different desorption times (0.2, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1.0, and 2.0 min), and a desorption time of 2.0 min was required to fully desorb all analytes and reduce their residuals. The IT-SPME-HPLC-DAD method was established under the optimized conditions, and the limits of detection (LODs), linear equations, linear ranges, and correlation coefficients were obtained. The LODs of the eight PAHs were in the range of 0.001-0.005 μg/L, the quantitative ranges of the analytes were 0.003-15.0 μg/L for Fla and Pyr, 0.010-20.0 μg/L for Phe and Ant, and 0.017-20.0 μg/L for Nap, Acy, Ace and Flu, the enrichment factors were in the range of 2029-2875, and the analytical precision was satisfactory (intra-day RSD%≤4.8%, and inter-day RSD≤8.6%). Compared with some reported methods, the method reported herein provided higher sensitivity, wider linear range, and shorter test time. This method was applied to the detection of PAHs in common drinking water, including bottled mineral water and water from drinking fountain. The satisfactory recovery (76.3%-132.8%) obtained proves that the method is suitable for the determination of trace PAHs in real water samples, with high sensitivity, rapid testing, online detection, and good accuracy. The extraction tube also exhibited satisfactory durability and chemical stability.

A microfluidic paper-based analytical device (µ-PAD) is a promising new technology platform for the development of extremely low-cost sensing devices. However, it has low sensitivity that might not enable to measure maximum allowable concentration of various pollutants in the environment. In this study, a dispersive liquid-liquid microextraction (DLLME) was developed as a preconcentration method to enhance the sensitivity of the µ-PAD for trace analysis of selected pesticides. Four critical parameters (volume of n-hexane and acetone, extraction time, NaCl amount) that affect the efficiency of DLLME have been optimized using response surface methodology. An acceptable mean recovery of 79-97% and 83-93% was observed at 1 µg L -1 and 5 µg L -1 fortification level, respectively, with very good repeatability (2.2-6.01% RSD) and reproducibility (5.60-10.41% RSD). Very high enrichment factors ranging from 317 to 1471 were obtained. The limits of detection for the studied analytes were in the range of 0.18-0.41 µg L -1 which is much lower than the WHO limits of 5-50 µg L -1 for similar category of analytes. Therefore, by coupling DLLME with µ-PAD, a sensitivity that allows to detect environmental threat and also that surpassed most of the previous reports have been achieved in this study. Alcohol intoxication has a dangerous effect on human health and is often associated with a risk of catastrophic injuries and alcohol-related crimes. A demand to address this problem adheres to the design of new sensor systems for the real-time monitoring of exhaled breath. We introduce a new sensor system based on a porous hydrophilic layer of submicron silica particles (SiO 2 SMPs) placed on a one-dimensional photonic crystal made of Ta 2 O 5 /SiO 2 dielectric layers whose operation relies on detecting changes in the position of surface wave resonance during capillary condensation in pores. To make the active layer of SiO 2 SMPs, we examine the influence of electrostatic interactions of media, particles, and the surface of the crystal influenced by buoyancy, gravity force, and Stokes drag force in the frame of the dip-coating preparation method. We evaluate the sensing performance toward biomarkers such as acetone, ammonia, ethanol, and isopropanol and test sensor system capabilities for alcohol intoxication assessment. We have found this sensor to respond to all tested analytes in a broad range of concentrations. By processing the sensor signals by principal component analysis, we selectively determined the analytes. We demonstrated the excellent performance of our device for alcohol intoxication assessment in real-time.

Moringa oleifera Lam (syn. M. ptreygosperma Gaertn .) leaves are globally acclaimed for their nutritional content and mitigation of malnutrition. In most impoverished rural communities including Limpopo, Mpumalanga and KwaZulu Natal of South Africa, powdered leaves of Moringa oleifera are applied as a nutritional supplement for readily available food such as porridge for malnourished children and even breast-feeding mothers. Widely practiced and admired is also the use of the plant seed in the do-it-yourself purification of water by rural South Africans. This study aimed at identifying the chemical and nutritional marker compounds present in South African Moringa oleifera seed oils using high resolution 1-2-dimension gas chromatography in order to give scientific validation to its uses in cosmetics and particularly in culinary practices. Results obtained from two-dimension tandem mass spectrometry chemical signature revealed over 250 compounds, five times more than those reported from one-dimension gas chromatography. Whereas previous reports from gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis reported oleic acid (70-78%) as the major compound from oil samples from other countries, M. oleifera seed oil from South Africa is marked by cis- 13-octadeaconic acid with 78.62% and 41.9% as the predominant monounsaturated fatty acid in the hexane and dichloromethane extracts respectively. This was followed by cis- vaccenic acid, an isomer of oleic acid at 51% in the acetone extract, 9-octadecanoic acid-(z)-methyl ester at 39.18%, 21.34% and 10.06% in dichloromethane, hexane and acetone extracts respectively. However, a principal component analysis with R 2 = 0.98 of the two-dimension tandem mass spectrometry cum chemometric analysis indicated n-hexadecanoic acid, oleic acid, 9-octadecanoic acid-(z)-methyl ester and cis -vaccenic acid with a probability of 0.96, 0.88, 0.80 and 0.79 respectively as the marker compounds that should be used for the quality control of moringa seed oils from South Africa. This study demonstrates that South African Moringa oleifera oils contain C-18 monounsaturated fatty acids similar to oils from Egypt (76.2%), Thailand (71.6%) and Pakistan (78.5%) just to mention but a few. These fatty acids are sunflower and olive oil type-compounds and therefore place moringa seed oil for consideration as a cooking oil amongst its other uses.

As the most widely used gas sensors, metal oxide semiconductor (MOS)-based chemiresistors have been facing great challenges in achieving ppb-level and selective detection of the target gas. The rational design and employment of bimetallic nanocatalysts (NCs) are expected to address this issue. In this work, the well-shaped and monodispersed AuPt NCs (diameter ≈ 9 nm) were functionalized on one-dimensional (1D) In 2 O 3 nanofibers (NFs) to construct efficient gas sensors. The sensor demonstrated dual-selective and ppb-level detection for ozone (O 3 ) and acetone (C 3 H 6 O) at different optimal working temperatures. For the possible application exploitation, a circuit was designed to monitor O 3 concentration and provide warnings when the concentration safety limit (50 ppb) was exceeded. Moreover, simulated exhaled breath measurements were also carried out to diagnose diabetes through C 3 H 6 O concentration. The selective detection for O 3 and C 3 H 6 O was further analyzed by principal component analysis (PCA). The drastically enhanced sensing performances were attributed to the synergistic catalytic effect of AuPt NCs. Both the "spillover effect" and the Schottky barrier at the interfaces of AuPt NCs and In 2 O 3 NFs promoted the sensing processes of O 3 and C 3 H 6 O.

Breath acetone (BrAce) has been reported to be useful for monitoring the pathophysiology of patients with diabetes. However, devices that measure BrAce are expensive, complex and uncommon. The FM-001, originally designed to monitor a marker of weight loss in healthy people, is a device for measuring BrAce. The FM-001 is a loading semiconducting gas sensor that is a simple and reusable device. The aim of this study was to evaluate the correlation between blood total ketone bodies (TKB) and BrAce measured with the FM-001 in patients with diabetes. Furthermore, through evaluation of that correlation, we sought to detect patients at high risk of developing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA). Thirty-five participants (age 52 [40-57], T2DM 32, T1DM 3) were enrolled. Scatter plots and linear regression lines relating BrAce to TKB and the correlation coefficients were calculated. Receiver-operating characteristic analysis was performed to determine the cut-off for predicting patients prone to DKA. The results showed that BrAce strongly correlates with TKB ( R = 0.828), and the correlation was stronger in patients whose serum C-peptide was not low. The optimal BrAce cut-off for predicting risk of developing DKA was 3400 ppb (AUC 0.924, sensitivity 73.3%, specificity 100%), which corresponds to a TKB ⩾ 1000 µ mol l -1 . BrAce also weakly correlated with free fatty acid. Thus, BrAce levels measured with the FM-001 strongly correlate with TKB, even in patients with diabetes. Several studies highlighted a correlation between exhaled air volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and some pathological conditions, such as chronic kidney disease (CKD), chronic liver disease, etc. In fact, in literature has been reported that CKD is characterized by an increased concentration of ammonia, trimethylamine (TMA) and isoprene compared to healthy subjects. Currently, there is not a validate and standardized method to detect VOCs. For this purpose, we examined the utility of selected ion flow tube-mass spectrometry (SIFT-MS) to measure VOCs in CKD patients and we evaluated the possible correlation between VOCs and the presence of CKD and its stage. We enrolled 68 CKD patients under conservative therapy and 54 healthy subjects. The analysis of the VOCs of the exhaled air of the enrolled subjects was performed by SIFT-MS. Among all the VOCs analyzed, the most relevant results by ROC curves were observed for TMA, acetone, ammonia and dimethyl sulfide. We found that a breath TMA concentration superior to 26 ppbv characterizes a 6.11 times greater risk of CKD, compared to subjects with lower levels. Moreover, we detected an increased concentration of acetone and ammonia in CKD patients compared to healthy subjects. Some human exhaled volatile organic compounds (VOCs) can be employed to diagnose related human endogenous diseases as characteristic biomarkers, which is expected to be applied to rapid screening and grading because of their non-invasive and cost-effective advantages. In this study, we developed a compact gas chromatography (GC) platform mainly composed of an integrated silicon-based micro-column chip using micro-electromechanical system techniques and a miniaturized metal oxide semiconductor gas detector. In addition, the sampling/switching valve with related components and embedded microcontrollers was used for airflow control. The fabricated system selectively detected the five VOCs (pentane, acetone, toluene, octane, and decane) considered the typical endogenous disease biomarkers. In the experiments, the functional parameters of the system were investigated, and the optimum temperature conditions of the system for separation were determined. The results show that the system can successfully test the studied five VOCs as low as 1 ppm. In addition, the influence of interfering gas (carbon dioxide and ammonia) on the system for the VOC mixture is also investigated. Moreover, to prove the possibility of breath analysis of the fabricated system, the detection performance of isoprene and acetone at the ppb level is studied. Then, the concentration changes of the isoprene at the ppb concentration for human breath are successfully detected in the system. Therefore, we believe that the prepared compact GC system has potential applications in the human endogenous disease diagnosis for the VOC biomarkers.

Dye-sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) were devised with the sensitizers prepared from the leaves and flowers of Amaranthus cruentus. Fresh and dried leaves were employed for extracting the dye sensitizers. Acetone, ethanol, and deionized water were used as solvents for the extraction process. A sum of nine dyes was prepared. For all the extracted dyes, spectroscopic studies (UV-visible & FTIR) were performed to ensure that the dyes are suitable to be used as sensitizers for DSSC. XRD and SEM were recorded for the TiO 2 paste used. Nine DSSCs were fabricated with the extracted dyes as sensitizers, TiO 2 as semiconductor oxide, I - /I 3- as electrolyte, and graphene-coated FTO as counter electrode. J-V characterization study was done for each cell showed that the cell with dye taken from the fresh leaves using acetone exhibited the highest efficiency of 0.816%. Cataluminescence sensor was useful for rapid determination of acetone in exhaled breath, which was a biomarker of diabetes. In Pt NPs@NU-901 nanocomposite, Pt NPs were dispersed in the elliptical structure of NU-901 successfully, and the original structure of NU-901 was kept intact. The CTL signal of acetone indicated that Pt NPs@NU-901 has the best catalytic performance. The introduction of Pt NPs improves the catalytic performance of nanocomposites effectively, and the coordination with acetone increased the adsorption energy by more than 8 times. Pt NPs@NU-901 integrated rapid capture, catalysis with detection of acetone, then the CTL method based on Pt NPs@NU-901 was established for rapid determination of acetone content in exhaled breath, the linear range was 0.50-70.0 mg/L, limit of detection was 0.23 mg/L (S/N = 3). RSDs for repeatability and reproducibility experiments were 4.8% and 4.5%, respectively. Acetone content in exhaled breath samples was detected by the method with recoveries from 90.6% to 107%.
