Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a widely used, noninvasive diagnostic tool in clinical practice, with millions of scans performed annually. Despite its safety profile, MRI is associated with several potential side effects, including rare but serious complications such as thermal burns. These burns typically result from the interaction of radiofrequency (RF) energy with conductive materials in contact with the skin, or from improper positioning during the scan. This case report details a 76-year-old female who developed a thermal burn on her left elbow after undergoing an MRI of her right shoulder. The patient initially experienced localized heat, redness, and mild tenderness at the site, which later developed into an open wound, leading to a diagnosis of cellulitis. However, further evaluation revealed the wound to be a stage III burn, likely resulting from RF energy exposure during the MRI procedure. The patient had a history of diabetes, a condition that may have contributed to impaired thermoregulation, increasing her risk for thermal injury. The burn was managed with wound debridement, antibiotics, and regular follow-up care, ultimately healing over an 8-week period. This case underscores the importance of understanding the mechanisms of MRI-induced burns, the need for stringent safety protocols, and the role of postprocedure patient education. It also highlights the potential for delayed diagnosis of MRI-related burns, which can be mistaken for other conditions such as cellulitis. Early recognition and appropriate management are critical to preventing complications and ensuring optimal patient outcomes.

BackgroundAzraq Syrian refugee camp, located in Jordan, is where the challenges of managing the COVID-19 epidemic meet the vulnerabilities of displaced people. This study aimed to investigate the epidemiological characteristics, incidence, risk factors, and outcomes of COVID-19 among Azraq camp residents.MethodsCOVID-19 data from Azraq camp were collected by International Medical Corps clinics and analyzed retrospectively from August 1, 2020, to August 31, 2022. Data included demographics, risk factors, testing history, contact tracing, and vaccination profiles. We estimated COVID-19 incidence and analyzed risk factors using Poisson and multilevel logistic regression.ResultsA total of 2,468 confirmed COVID-19 cases were identified, with a prevalence of 5.6 per 100 residents. The camp's monthly incidence rate was more than 50% lower than the national rate, with a 1.7% monthly decrease. Females had a higher incidence than males (6.4% vs. 4.9%, p < 0.001), while the elderly bore the greatest disease burden. Home-based isolation was the main strategy, except during the second wave. Vaccination coverage reached 31.6%, primarily with Pfizer (49.8%). Symptomatic cases made up 44.0% of confirmed cases, with 10.4% requiring hospitalization. Factors independently associated with hospitalization included age, comorbidity, and vaccination status.ConclusionThe study highlights the need for robust surveillance, targeted healthcare interventions, equitable resource allocation, and vaccination campaigns to manage COVID-19 and future epidemics in refugee camps.

Deep vein thrombosis is an uncommon yet significant complication of percutaneous coronary interventions. Prolonged manual compression at the access site, a common practice for achieving hemostasis, can inadvertently exacerbate thrombosis risks, including venous stasis and endothelial injury. We present the case of an 84-year-old female with coronary artery disease who underwent staged percutaneous coronary intervention with stent placement in the left circumflex and left anterior descending arteries. After the procedure, manual pressure was applied to the femoral access site for over 30 minutes, after which the patient developed hypotension and leg pain. Point-of-care ultrasound revealed a large deep vein thrombosis in the right femoral vein, extending into the profunda and saphenous veins. The patient was treated with a heparin drip and monitored without surgical intervention. Her condition improved, and follow-up imaging confirmed resolution of the deep vein thrombosis. This case underscores the risks associated with extended manual compression and highlights the importance of adhering to guidelines for post percutaneous coronary intervention care. The use of vascular closure devices may reduce the likelihood of such complications. Additionally, early recognition and management of deep vein thrombosis is critical in preventing further thromboembolic events and improving patient outcomes.

ABSTRACT Background Iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism is a common cause of postthyroidectomy hypocalcaemia. It has varying incidence rates after neck surgery in Saudi Arabia, ranging from 0.07% to 65.30%. Hypoparathyroidism can manifest with a spectrum of symptoms, ranging from mild to severe and life‐threatening. This study aimed to assess the rate and predictors of iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism after thyroid surgery and its natural course. Methods This retrospective cohort study used a data collection form to extract patient information from the electronic healthcare system (Best‐Care) for patients treated from 2017 to 2022. Patients' demographics, surgical specifics and biochemical profiles were recorded for subsequent analysis. Results Among the 343 patients who underwent thyroidectomy, 130 (37.9%) developed hypoparathyroidism, primarily within the first day after surgery. Calcium or vitamin D supplementation before surgery did not significantly influence hypoparathyroidism development. Notably, extensive combined lymph node dissection was significantly associated with postoperative hypoparathyroidism development (p = 0.0004). More patients who underwent central and lateral lymph node dissection (n = 19, 79.17%) developed hypoparathyroidism than patients who underwent central (n = 18, 40.91%) or lateral (n = 8, 38.10%) dissection alone. Permanent hypoparathyroidism was observed in 40 patients (11.66%). Conclusion This study revealed a high incidence of iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism and high rates of permanent hypoparathyroidism. Further research is warranted to better comprehend the risk factors and optimise management strategies for iatrogenic hypoparathyroidism. Overall, our findings emphasise the need for vigilant monitoring and effective management of patients undergoing thyroidectomy and the significance of postoperative replacement therapies.

Abstract Background Pulmonary carcinoid is a rare diagnosis with surgery remaining the standard treatment of choice. However, resection may impact patients’ daily activities due to decreased lung volume reserve and postoperative pain. Our study aims to compare the impact of different types of surgical resection on the post-operative quality of life with the application of a strict peri-operative pulmonary care program. Methods Patients who underwent surgery for bronchopulmonary carcinoid tumors in a tertiary cancer center between August, 2017 and March, 2020 were identified and demographic data was collected. Patients were contacted via phone for the qualitative and quantitative assessment of pain and quality of life, utilizing the Arabic version of Short-form McGill Pain Questionnaire and Activity of Daily Living (ADL) instrument respectively. Lung reserve was assessed before and after surgery. Statistical analysis used Chi-Square for categorical variables and ANOVA for continuous variables. Results A total of 16 patients underwent different type of resection. The majority were male (n = 10; 63%) with a mean age of 44 years (19–81). Most common clinical stage was stage I (n = 12, 75%) with typical carcinoid features recorded in more than half of the cases (n = 11, 69%). Almost all patients underwent surgical excision (n = 15, 94%) with negative resection margin and no major post-operative complications. Bilobectomy was the most frequent procedure (n = 6, 40%) and video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was utilized in 8 patients (50%). Expected changes were recorded in pre- and postoperative pulmonary function test with an average drop of 10 in FEV1 and 14 mL/min/mmHg in DLCO. The majority of patients (n = 15, 94%) were totally independent doing daily activities. Mild intermittent pain was found in 7 patients (44%) who scored an average intensity of 1.6 out of 10. Conclusions Excellent long-term outcomes can be achieved following surgical resection of pulmonary carcinoid tumors with little to no effect on patients’ lung function and quality of life in regard to performance status and post-operative pain when a good peri-operative pulmonary, physical rehabilitation, and pain management programs are adopted and strictly implemented.

BackgroundThis study aims to evaluate real-world (rw) outcomes of immunotherapy (IO) for advanced stage NSCLC at King Hussein Cancer Center (KHCC) in Jordan.MethodsAdvanced stage NSCLC patients who received IO at KHCC between 2017 and 2022 were included. The data were retrospectively collected. PFS and OS were estimated for patients with ECOG performance status (ECOG PS) 0-1. Cox regression analyzed predictors of OS in first-line (1L) IO, regardless of performance status.ResultsThe total number of patients included was 244. Out of those, 160 (65%), 67 (28%), and 17 (7%) patients received IO as 1L, second-line (2L), or third-line or beyond (3L or beyond), respectively. The median age for all patients was 59 years. Male were 88%, and 77% were smokers. The median follow-up time was 12.5 months. The median PFS and OS for 1L IO were 7 [95% CI 5.8 – 10.3] and 11.8 [95% CI 8.8 – 14.4], months, respectively. In the first 3 months after starting 1L IO, 34/160 (21%) patients had died. For those who survived beyond 3 months after starting 1L IO, the median PFS and OS were 11.3 [95% CI 8.3 – 16.5] and 15.4 [95% CI 13.2 – 21] months, respectively. In the Cox regression model of 1L IO patients with any performance status, ECOG PS 2 was predictive of worse OS compared to ECOG PS 0-1 (p= 0.005).ConclusionThis real-world study of advanced-stage NSCLC patients treated with immunotherapy at KHCC reveals outcomes that fall short of those anticipated from clinical trials. The inclusion of Middle Eastern patients in lung cancer trials is essential to ensure adequate representation of various ethnicities in clinical research.

Abstract Background Regardless of its rare occurrence, Thymoma remains the most frequently encountered primary tumor of the anterior mediastinum comprising about 50% of all masses in the region. Surgical resection, via thymectomy, remains the mainstay treatment modality. In locally advanced and borderline resectable tumors, neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) may be utilized to increase the chance of R0 resection, raising the question of its efficacy and safety. Methods Demographic and clinical data from patients who presented to a tertiary cancer center between January 2015–October 2021 with a diagnosis of thymoma and underwent curative surgical resection was collected. Computed tomography scan was used to delineate clinical staging, tumor size and to detect post-therapeutic variations in tumor burden. The response evaluation criteria in solid tumors (RECIST) was used to classify the effect of NACT on tumor burden. The pathological response was determined by measuring the percentage of necrotic tissue. Results A total of 23 patients were diagnosed with thymoma. Most patients were male with a mean age 46 (± 15) years at diagnosis. The most common clinical stage was stage II with 5 patients (22%). A total of 12 patients had NACT as compared to 11 patients who had upfront surgery. Roses are increasingly being grown in soilless systems to increase productivity and reduce the challenges associated with soil-based cultivation. This study investigates the effects of using cocopeat and volcanic tuff substrates, the particle size of tuff, and substrate depth on the growth and flower quality of roses (Rosa hybrida L. cv. top secret) grown under greenhouse conditions. The treatments were cocopeat, tuff, cocopeat–tuff mixture, and tuff of particle size of 2 to 4 mm, 0 to 4 mm, and 0 to 8 mm at depths of 20 cm and 40 cm. The results showed that cocopeat had the highest water-holding capacity and photosynthetic rate. Tuff substrates had higher chlorophyll content throughout the growing season. Although flower numbers per plant in cocopeat and tuff from 0 to 8 mm at a depth of 20 cm were statistically similar, tuff from 0 to 8 mm had longer flowering stems and larger post-harvest flower diameters than cocopeat. An increase in the tuff depth from 20 to 40 cm decreased the flower number and main stem diameter. In conclusion, while cocopeat promotes rapid initial growth, volcanic tuff substrates, particularly tuff from 0 to 8 mm at a depth of 20 cm, provide long-term benefits for flower quality and plant health.

The internet has considerably changed the landscape of communication in the 21st century. People no longer have to leave their homes to engage in meaningful interpersonal communication. More importantly, individuals who have an inherent fear of human interaction seek solace and comfort in communication technologies. This study investigated how individual's 'fear of human interaction' affects technology acceptance. A proposed framework was built based on the extended unified theory of acceptance and use of technology (UTAUT2). The model postulates that performance expectancy, effort expectancy, social influence, facilitating conditions, hedonic motivation, perceived value, fear of physical interaction (FOPI), and social anxiety (SA) can significantly predict an individual's technology acceptance. Results failed to support the role of social influence and fear of physical interaction. All other variables were significant predictors of behavioural intentions. Data analysis included comparing means of SA and FOPI items to understand our major model extension. More details are reported in the paper.

The present study aims to develop an innovative hybrid system powered by solar energy to dry plants and produce pure water, suitable for remote regions that suffer from power problems and the problem of lack of pure drinking water. This was done by integrating a two-stage dryer unit with modified solar still with an air injection system and external condenser to dry plants as well as produce pure water. The integration of the modified solar still and external condenser with the two-stage dryer unit aims to increase the rates of pure water productivity, by injecting the hot humid air that leaves the drying unit into the modified solar still. The performance of the developed and innovative hybrid system was studied theoretically, and the mathematical models were validated using the previously published experimental results. The results presented that, the suggested two stages of the dryer with reheating represent an excellent design that improved the mass of water that was removed from the products by 72.65% as compared to only the first stage of the dryer unit. The proposed innovative developed hybrid system can be produced cumulative pure water with a rate reaching 49.94 liter/day, with an improvement of 592.65% as compared to only modified solar still with air injection. Also, the proposed innovative developed hybrid system represents a good choice which improved the gain output ratio by 177.93% on average as compared to only a two-stage dryer unit with reheating.

Among the online communities, Reddit is a promising online platform that connects millions of people to each other. It is a fruitful online platform that offers business firms to reach the maximum audience. In this paper, we introduce a new extended form of the generalized Rayleigh distribution to model the Reddit advertising and breast cancer data sets. The proposed model is called a new generalized Rayleigh distribution and possesses heavy-tailed properties. The maximum likelihood estimators along with certain mathematical properties are obtained. Finally, the new generalized Rayleigh distribution is applied to the Reddit advertising and breast cancer data sets and its comparisons are done with the other generalized forms of the Rayleigh distribution.

Our study examined the spread and impact of COVID-19 within this camp from August 2020 to August 2022. We collected and analyzed data on the residents' demographics, health risks, testing, and vaccination status. We found that COVID-19 spread less rapidly in the camp than in the general Jordanian population, with the monthly infection rate decreasing over time. Women and older residents were particularly affected, with the elderly experiencing the most severe cases. While most patients were treated at home, some required hospitalization, especially those who were older or had underlying health conditions. Vaccination played a crucial role in managing the pandemic, with nearly one-third of the camp's population receiving the vaccine. Our findings emphasize the need for ongoing health monitoring, tailored medical interventions, and increased vaccination efforts to protect vulnerable communities like those in refugee camps from current and future health crises. Abstract Background Video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is a safe and effective surgical approach for pulmonary resection. VATS can be accomplished with only a single incision, resulting in less postoperative pain and paresthesia, better cosmetic results, and greater patient satisfaction. Single-port VATS (spVATS) has become increasingly common for lung resection. We assess the early surgical and oncological outcomes after adopting this new technique at our tertiary cancer center as the first institution to do so in the country. Method Medical records for 257 patients in a tertiary cancer center, with a diagnosis of non-small cell lung cancer, pulmonary metastasis, or other chest-confined pathology, were accessed to obtain perioperative outcomes, pathologic results, post-operative follow-up data, and early surgical and oncological outcomes. All patients underwent spVATS for limited or major lung resection. Simple descriptive analysis was utilized. Results spVATS was either performed with curative intent (79.8%, N = 205), or as a diagnostic procedure (20.2%, N = 52). Resection types were subcategorized for curative intent group as limited (73.6%, N = 151), lobectomy (16.6%, N = 34), and complex (9.7%, N = 20). Resection with a negative margin (R0) rate was 100% for the primary lung cancer (PLC) patients and 97% for the pulmonary metastasectomy (PM) group. The complication rate was 5%. Three-year disease-free survival was 87% and 68.5% for PLC and PM group, respectively. The 3-year overall-survival was 91.3% for the PLC and 82.8% for PM. Operation duration showed a downtrend over the study period in each curative subcategory with a borderline difference in the limited resection (P value = 0.05). Conclusion All the spVATS procedures were successfully performed without perioperative severe complications or mortality, regardless of complexity. R0 resection was excellent. Middle- and long-term efficacies of spVATS for lung cancer require further follow-up. With proper training, appropriate indication and meticulous application, adopting spVATS is safe and feasible technique that does not compromise surgical and oncological outcomes.

Objective To investigate if the implementation of enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) pathways could be effective in paediatric patients undergoing appendectomy. Methods This retrospective study analysed the data from patients aged ≤18 years that underwent appendectomies. The data collected included age, sex, application of enhanced recovery concepts (ERCs) and clinical outcomes. Results A total of 93 paediatric patients were retrospectively categorized into two groups: patients in group 1 did not experience the use of ERCs during their appendectomies; and patients in group 2 had ERCs applied during their appendectomies. Patients in both groups were exposed to some elements of ERAS, including preoperative patient/parent counselling, limited fasting durations, antibiotic prophylaxis and no bowel preparations. Duration of hospital stay was significantly longer in group 1 compared with group 2 (3.47 ± 1.81 days versus 2.24 ± 1.52 days, respectively. There were no significant differences between the two groups in term of postoperative pain control, hospital cost, readmissions, reoperations and emergency room visits. Conclusion Implementing ERCs in paediatric patients undergoing appendectomies provided a significant improvement in patient recovery with a shorter hospital stay, with no increase in postoperative pain, hospital cost, rate of readmission and reoperation.

Universities use learning management systems (LMS) to support teaching practices and add value to the educational system. A leading university in the gulf region (XYZ) provides support for faculty members (FMs) through its Center of Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL), where experts respond to their enquiries on how to use the LMS features. This study analyzed data available from such interactions and concluded that FMs preferred office (face-to-face) contacting method, assessment is the major generator of FMs enquiries, and also the majority of enquiries were clustered into five major dimensions. Information technology and the Internet has enabled faculty and educational institutions to implement new teaching methods to enrich the educational environment. The flipped classroom (FC) method changed the teaching practices and encouraged active learning. Using pre-class videos made the class time available for active discussions. This study utilized two samples to compare student perceptions on the challenges and benefits of such a method. The first sample included 200 students from a leading university in one of the Gulf Region countries, and the second sample included 114 students in Jordan. Results indicated a domination of higher means for the Jordanian sample, and the for males sample. Results partially supported the model for the Gulf university students and overall sample, but fully for the Jordanian sample. The strongest predictor of FC was perceived enjoyment and the weakest predictor was relative advantage. More results and discussion are reported at the end.
