Abstract Background Tree squirrels (Sciuridae, Sciurini), in particular the highly diverse Neotropical lineages, are amongst the most rapidly diversifying branches of the mammal tree of life but also some of the least known. Negligence of this group by systematists is likely a product of the difficulties in assessing morphological informative traits and of the scarcity or unavailability of fresh tissue samples for DNA sequencing. The highly discrepant taxonomic arrangements are a consequence of the lack of phylogenies and the exclusive phenotypic-based classifications, which can be misleading in a group with conservative morphology. Here we used high-throughput sequencing and an unprecedented sampling of museum specimens to provide the first comprehensive phylogeny of tree squirrels, with a special emphasis on Neotropical taxa. Results We obtained complete or partial mitochondrial genomes from 232 historical and modern samples, representing 40 of the 43 currently recognized species of Sciurini. Our phylogenetic analyses—performed with datasets differing on levels of missing data and taxa under distinct analytical methods—strongly support the monophyly of Sciurini and consistently recovered 12 major clades within the tribe. We found evidence that the diversity of Neotropical tree squirrels is underestimated, with at least six lineages that represent taxa to be named or revalidated. Ancestral state reconstructions of number of upper premolars and number of mammae indicated that alternative conditions of both characters must have evolved multiple times throughout the evolutionary history of tree squirrels. Conclusions Complete mitogenomes were obtained from museum specimens as old as 120 years, reinforcing the potential of historical samples for phylogenetic inferences of elusive lineages of the tree of life. None of the taxonomic arrangements ever proposed for tree squirrels fully corresponded to our phylogenetic reconstruction, with only a few of the currently recognized genera recovered as monophyletic. By investigating the evolution of two morphological traits widely employed in the taxonomy of the group, we revealed that their homoplastic nature can help explain the incongruence between phylogenetic results and the classification schemes presented so far. Based on our phylogenetic results we suggest a tentative supraspecific taxonomic arrangement for Sciurini, employing 13 generic names used in previous taxonomic classifications.

Tree squirrels (Sciurinae, Sciurini) represent a diverse radiation that successfully colonized Europe, Asia and the Americas during the Miocene-Pliocene, but information on their evolutionary history remains unclear. In the Neotropics, they have been shown to exhibit the highest rate of diversification amongst all arboreal squirrels, with strikingly high species accumulation rates in the past 3 Mya. In this study, we investigated the tempo and mode of diversification of tree squirrels using a mitogenome dataset that includes 43 Sciurini species. Our results corroborate the date of origin of the tribe Sciurini around 14 Mya (13.4–15.5) but suggest that their ancestral area was most likely in North America. This is in contrast to previous findings that suggested that the ancestors of this tribe occupied Eurasia. We estimated that cladogenetic events leading to the Eurasian lineages occurred twice at 10.5 and 9.7 Mya. Current North American genera originated in a temporal window from 6.2–2.3 Mya, and the origin of the Neotropical radiation was estimated to have occurred around 6 Mya in northwestern South America, in the Pacific dominion. Remarkably, our results indicate that tree squirrels entered South America at an earlier date than previously estimated. This could have happened either through a land corridor connecting the Caribbean islands or through the Panamanian land bridge. Most cladogenetic events in Eurasia and North America appear to have occurred either late in the Miocene or in the Pleistocene, while the majority of Neotropical cladogenetic events occurred along the Pliocene—right after the South American invasion. We found a fairly constant speciation rate for tree squirrels (averaging 0.29), which contrasts with the peak of lineage accumulation observed in the Pliocene. The absence of fluctuations in the diversification rate may be the result of several extinction events that were responsible for equalizing the number of lineages maintained over time. Finally, we conclude that the South American invasion was not as recent as previously inferred, but the diversification there was indeed very fast.

This study aims to examine, from a historical perspective, the relations between ethnic-racial diversity in Brazil and didactic-pedagogic treatment of Afro-Brazilian history and culture in two books, concerning History Brazil, issued in the first half of the twentieth century, assuming that these teaching materials also exercised in that period the function of transmitting values and behaviors desirable to that society. Moreover, it is important to highlight the complaints of the black movement in relation to the absence of school discussions about the African-Brazilian question and the reproduction of prejudices that contribute to alienate black people while restricting their access to material and cultural goods. This initiative culminated in the implementation of affirmative action policies by the government, in order to promote the recognition and appreciation of the many ethnic groups that make up Brazilian society.

Abstract This study aims to examine, from a historical perspective, the relations between ethnic-racial diversity in Brazil and didactic-pedagogic treatment of Afro-Brazilian history and culture in two books, concerning History Brazil, issued in the first half of the twentieth century, assuming that these teaching materials also exercised in that period the function of transmitting values and behaviors desirable to that society. Brilho das Águas is a center of the religion called Santo Daime, founded in Salvador, in 1995. It is recognized as the first Santo Daime center to be founded in the state of Bahia. This collective began at a time when Afro-Brazilian religions were going through a period known as Africanization, in which they sought to reconnect with their African matrixes that had been erased during the period called whitening. By studying the specific case of the church Brilho das Águas, this thesis questions how the conceptions and practices of this center relate to the period of Africanization. It was observed that Brilho das Águas was impacted by Africanization, through the dialogues established with the church Flor da Montanha, located in Nova Friburgo/RJ, founded by the late Ialorixá Arlete Coutinho (Baixinha). She founded Umbanda centers in the state of Rio de Janeiro and was confirmed in Candomblé. The Brilho das Águas also follows the work done by Dona Dinorá, in Sergipe. Dinorá, similarly to Baixinha, performs Umbanda, Candomblé and Santo Daime ceremonies. Although Brilho das Águas and Flor da Montanha are autonomous centers, they are influenced by the Igreja do Culto Eclético da Fluente Luz Universal Patrono Sebastião Mota de Melo (Church of the Eclectic Worship of Fluent Universal Light Patron Sebastião Mota de Melo) -ICEFLU, located in the Céu do Mapiá community, in the municipality of Pauini/AM. This Amazonian center has been close to Umbanda since the 1970s, and welcomes indigenous people and indigenists into its midst. One must take into account, in this context, that Santo Daime is an Afro-indigenous religion, and has reclaimed elements that were already part of its history, but that were forgotten during the whitening period. The first chapter of this thesis brings the history of the formation and foundation of Santo Daime by Raimundo Irineu Serra (Mestre Irineu) and his followers, as well as the stories of Sebastião Mota de Melo (Padrinho Sebastião) and Baixinha. The second chapter presents the history of Brilho das Águas, the church that is the focus of this study. In the third chapter, through an auto-ethnography and an ethnography, the author's experiences are told alongside those of other interlocuters from Brilho das Águas, Flor da Montanha and Céu do Mapiá, where he carried out field work and incursions. Some religious experiences lived by the author before joining the Santo Daime are also addressed. The fourth and last chapter brings a historical review of anthropological concepts related to syncretism, making them reverberate on the information presented in the first three chapters. For the analysis of the information, the notions of syncretism, whitening and Africanization, proposed by Prandi, were used. In the specific case of Santo Daime, the author makes use of these notions, considering the sociocultural context of the time in which they were being mobilized: Syncretism between 1890 and 1920, whitening between 1930 and 1970 and Africanization from 1980 until today.

PURPOSE: Evaluate the initial experience of laparoscopic ureteral reimplant for ureteral stenosis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: From January 2004 to June 2008, 10 patients underwent 11 laparoscopic reconstruction surgeries for ureteral stenosis. Seven cases of stenosis of the distal ureter, two at the level of iliac vessels, a case of bilateral distal stenosis and one in the medium third. Eight ureteroneocystotomies were performed by extravesical technique with anti-reflux mechanism, two cases of vesical reimplant with Boari technique and one case using the psoas hitch technique. RESULTS: The average surgical time was 166 minutes (115-245 min), mean blood loss was 162 mL (100-210 mL) and the average hospital stay was 2.9 days (2-4 days). There were two complications: a lesion of the sigmoid colon identified peroperatively and treated with laparoscopic sutures with good evolution, and a case of ureteral stone obstruction at the 30th day postoperative, treated by laser ureterolitotripsy. All patients had resolution of the stenosis at an average follow-up period of 18 months (3-54 months). CONCLUSIONS: Laparoscopic surgery represents a feasible, safe and low morbidity technique for ureteral reimplant in ureteral stenosis.

One of the main factors limiting agricultural production in tropical climate regions is mainly related to the presence of exchangeable aluminum (Al3+) in highly weathered acid soils. Four methods of Al3+ determination extracted with neutral 1 mol L¹ KCl solution were evaluated: three colorimetric methods (aluminon plus ascorbic acid, and eriochrome cyanine R by FIA) and the usual titrimetric method with back-titration. Surface samples from 20 soils of different Brazilian regions, with active acidity (0.01 mol L¹ CaCl2 pH) ranging from very high to medium (3.82 to 5.52), were used. The variance analysis revealed significant interaction among Al3+ determination methods and soil. Mean methods comparisons within each soil (Tukey, P < 0.05) indicated that, for most of the soils, the methods differed among each other, although there were high correlations between the obtained values. Al3+ values determined for soil samples by titration varied between 0.15 and 14.71 mmol c dm³. The colorimetric methods showed higher values than the titration method, mainly for those with aluminon (up to 18.75 mmol c dm-3). The Al3+ contents of colorimetric methods correlated quadraticaly with the titration values, for the soil samples with Al3+ > 10 mmol c dm³. Among colorimetric methods, in operational terms, the eriochrome with FIA method presented analytical performance up to 50 samples per hour, easiness and sensibility for routine Al analysis in soil samples. However, due to the specificity, the titration/back-titration method should be used, despite the moroseness, when the Al3+ ions are the objective.

In soils of tropical climate regions the high acidity and the presence of exchangeable aluminum (Al3+), associated to low fertility, are the main restrainting factors for agricultural production. A laboratory experiment was conducted using 26 soils of different Brazilian regions, to investigate soil acidity components, giving emphasis to Al and their relations with chemical properties. The pH correlated positively with P, Ca, Mg, K, BS, CEC and V% values, and negatively with Al saturation. The Al3+ was the predominant exchangeable cation in 32% of the soils with pH below 5.6. The KCl titratable H+ represents the hydroxi-Al(OH)x complex with low stability and the Wolf-Morgan extracted Al corresponds to the exchangeable + non-exchangeable Al species. The Al3+ and low stability hydroxi-Al decreased quickly with increasing pH up to 5.5. The non-exchangeable Al increased up to pH 4.5, then decreased to pH 5.5 and had a small increment from 7.0 to 7.5.

- Abstract
BACKGROUND: The ISARIC prospective multinational observational study is the largest cohort of hospitalized patients with COVID-19. We present relationships of age, sex, and nationality to presenting symptoms. METHODS: International, prospective observational study of 60 109 hospitalized symptomatic patients with laboratory-confirmed COVID-19 recruited from 43 countries between 30 January and 3 August 2020. Logistic regression was performed to evaluate relationships of age and sex to published COVID-19 case definitions and the most commonly reported symptoms. RESULTS: 'Typical' symptoms of fever (69%), cough (68%) and shortness of breath (66%) were the most commonly reported. 92% of patients experienced at least one of these. Prevalence of typical symptoms was greatest in 30- to 60-year-olds (respectively 80, 79, 69%; at least one 95%). They were reported less frequently in children (≤ 18 years: 69, 48, 23; 85%), older adults (≥ 70 years: 61, 62, 65; 90%), and women (66, 66, 64; 90%; vs. men 71, 70, 67; 93%, each P < 0.001). The most common atypical presentations under 60 years of age were nausea and vomiting and abdominal pain, and over 60 years was confusion. Regression models showed significant differences in symptoms with sex, age and country. INTERPRETATION: This international collaboration has allowed us to report reliable symptom data from the largest cohort of patients admitted to hospital with COVID-19. Adults over 60 and children admitted to hospital with COVID-19 are less likely to present with typical symptoms. Nausea and vomiting are common atypical presentations under 30 years. Confusion is a frequent atypical presentation of COVID-19 in adults over 60 years. Women are less likely to experience typical symptoms than men.

Tree squirrels (Sciurinae, Sciurini) represent a diverse radiation that successfully colonized Europe, Asia and the Americas during the Miocene-Pliocene, but information on their evolutionary history remains unclear. In the Neotropics, they have been shown to exhibit the highest rate of diversification amongst all arboreal squirrels, with strikingly high species accumulation rates in the past 3 My. In this study, we investigated the tempo and mode of diversification of tree squirrels using a mitogenome dataset that includes 43 Sciurini species. Our results corroborate the date of origin of the tribe Sciurini around 14 Mya (13.4-15.5) but suggest that their ancestral area was most likely in North America. This is in contrast to previous findings that suggested that the ancestors of this tribe occupied Eurasia. We estimated that cladogenetic events leading to the Eurasian lineages occurred twice at 10.5 and 9.7 Mya. Current North American genera originated in a temporal window from 6.2 to 2.3 Mya, and the origin of the Neotropical radiation was estimated to have occurred around 6 Mya in northwestern South America in the Pacific dominion.

Abstract Surgical site infection (SSI) has been indicated as the third cause of nosocomial infection. The present study aimed to determine the epidemiological profile of SSI and its association with the risk factors. It is a transversal study done at the São João Batista Hospital of Viçosa-MG and at the Surgery Service of the Small Animals Veterinary Hospital of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa-MG, from September 2012 to February 2013. Global SSI rates were 0.7% at the human and 3.46% at the veterinary hospitals. At the veterinary hospital, SSI rates were not related to contamination potential, with clean procedures presenting the greater rates. As for the type of surgery, orthopedic ones are the most common in both hospital and also the ones presenting the greater SSI rates. Surgeries during more than 120 minutes were 15.25% of the total of procedures at the human hospital and are even less common in the veterinary, with 1.26%. Rate of SSI does not seem to be related to surgery duration in this classification. Bacteria isolated from surgical wounds were multi-resistant and the obtained data indicated that no criteria of antibiotic prophylaxis existed, mainly for clean surgeries. This scenario shows that the action of a commission to control nosocomial infection are extremely relevant in order to guarantee reliable data so that the quality of service may be evaluated and thus, promoting a decrease the risk of in post-operative complications.

Our purpose is to present a new technique to evaluate arterial obstructions in the lower limbs by magnetic resonance using a single paramagnetic contrast agent double dose slowly administered using an infusion pump. The method is based on a software and hardware called Mobitrak available on the Philips high field magnetic resonance machines, which allows vascular evaluation of wide areas with continuous and segmentar high resolution acquisitions. An echo gradient sequence (FFE) was used, which allowed three simultaneous planning and had little overlapping on the intersections. This dynamic sequence is achieved in two phases, prior and during contrast injection, and allows signal subtraction of adjacent tissues and 3D reconstructions. The method has various advantages such as better visualization of the tibiofibular segments, study of the whole lower limb in a single patient visit, and reduction of the volume of contrast injected.

This paper takes as its starting point the Law 10.639/03, which establishes the compulsory teaching of African and African-Brazilian history and culture in educational institutions. Then, it goes back to the early twentieth century to understand how Negroes were treated in textbooks from that time, a period when legislation for these school supplies was consolidated in the country. At the same time, with the decline of racial theories in Brazil, it was intended to create a nation where all Brazilians would have a common identity. The object of research is the book of History of Brazil Nossa Patria: narração dos factos da História do Brasil, atraves da sua evolução com muitas gravuras explicativas, by Rocha Pombo (1925), whose publication was strong in schooling in the first half of twentieth century., Cet article prend comme point de départ la loi 10.639/03, laquelle établi comme obligatoire l'enseignement de l'histoire et de la culture africaine et afro-brésilienne dans les établissements scolaires.
