Metal-ceramic crowns and bridges provide a stable and aesthetic tooth reconstruction. Hot pressing of veneering ceramics to metal substructure minimizes the formation of pores. Within the oral cavity, prosthetic structures are exposed to thermal stress. The study examines the influence of temperature changes on the quality and durability of the metal-ceramic bond using thermocyclic loading. Prior to the ceramic pressing, 40 cylindrical alloy specimens (height: 15 mm, diameter: 7 mm) were treated with abrasive blasting using Al2O3 (250 µm) or SiC (250 µm). They were divided into four groups: two control groups (sandblasted with Al2O3 or SiC) and two groups subjected to thermocyclic simulation. The ceramic-to-metal bond strength was measured with a shear test before and after thermocyclic loading. A statistically significant reduction in the bond strength between the metal substructure and the pressed ceramic was found after thermocyclic exposure. The bond strength decreased by 57% for Al2O3 sandblasted specimens and 36% for those sandblasted with SiC, as against the control group. This indicates that thermocycling weakens the bond between the metal alloy and pressed ceramic. The SiC blasting of the cobalt-chromium alloy results in a higher shear bond strength of the material connection after thermocyclic stimulation than the abrasive blasting with Al2O3. The article presents the results of numerical and experimental studies of a working nozzle for jet-abrasive machining of material surfaces. Nozzle designs with variable geometry were investigated. The aim of the study was to identify reserves for increasing the efficiency of the nozzle to ensure the energy efficiency of the jet-abrasive installation for sustainable production in the context of Industry 5.0. The implementation of numerical modeling made it possible to carry out a series of calculations for the considered nozzle designs using an air-abrasive mixture with flow visualization. The technological parameters of jet-abrasive machining were analyzed. A series of numerical and experimental studies were conducted using the principles of Industry 4.0. Two software packages were used for numerical studies. The results of the calculations that were obtained coincided quite well. Overall, the obtained results made it possible to adjust the settings of the pneumo-abrasive unit in order to get the proper roughness of the processed surface, opt for proper working nozzle design, and determine proper pressure and air consumption for the highest unit efficiency. In a series of studies, the authors proposed a mathematical model for determining the values of mass flow rates of the working medium in the nozzle. The analytical coefficients of the developed model have been obtained. In addition, an approach to determining the main parameters of abrasive blasting based on experimental data was developed. The results obtained were verified by comparing them with the results of experimental studies. It was found that to increase the efficiency of the Venturi nozzle, the outlet cross-section of the considered nozzles should be reduced, and the mass flow rate of the dispersed phase should not significantly affect the speed of the grains of sand at the nozzle outlet. The solder burrs on the 304V wire surface can easily scratch the vascular tissue during interventional treatment, resulting in complications such as medial tears, bleeding, dissection, and rupture. Abrasive blasting is often used to remove solder burr and obtain a smooth surface for the interventional device. This study conducted an abrasive blasting experiment to explore the effects of process parameters (air pressure, lift-off height, abrasive volume, and abrasive type) on processing time, surface roughness, and mechanical properties to reveal the material removal mechanism. The results indicated that the resin abrasive can remove the SAC burr and keep the 304V integrity due to the proper hardness and Young's module. Impaction pits are the main material removal mode in abrasive blasting. The processing time decreases with the increase in air pressure. The surface roughness increases with the increase in abrasive volume. The primary and secondary factors affecting the surface roughness of the 304V wire after abrasive blasting are the abrasive type and air pressure, followed by the abrasive volume and lift-off height. Blasting leads to a decrease in yield strength, and Young's modulus and the hardness of the abrasive will affect the tensile strength. Abstract Cubic boron nitride (cBN) grinding wheels play a pivotal role in precision machining, serving as indispensable tools for achieving exceptional surface quality. Ensuring the sharpness of cBN grains and optimizing the grinding wheel's chip storage capacity are critical factors. This paper presents a study on the metal-bonded segments and single cBN grain samples using the vacuum sintering method. It investigates the impact of blasting parameters—specifically silicon carbide (SiC) abrasive size, blasting distance, and blasting time—on the erosive wear characteristics of both the metal bond and abrasive. The findings indicate that the abrasive size and blasting distance significantly affect the erosive wear performance of the metal bond. Following a comprehensive analysis of the material removal rate of the metal bond and the erosive wear condition of cBN grains, optimal parameters for the working layer are determined: a blasting distance of 60 mm, a blasting time of 15 s, and SiC particle size of 100#. Furthermore, an advanced simulation model investigates the dressing process of abrasive blasting, revealing that the metal bond effectively inhibits crack propagation within cBN abrasive grains, thereby enhancing fracture toughness and impact resistance. Additionally, a comparative analysis is conducted between the grinding performance of porous cBN grinding wheels and vitrified cBN grinding wheels. The results demonstrate that using porous cBN grinding wheels significantly reduces grinding force, temperature, and chip adhesion, thereby enhancing the surface quality of the workpiece.

Grit particles remaining on the substrate surface after grit blasting are generally considered to impair the thermal performance of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs). However, the specific mechanisms by which these particles degrade the multilayer structure of TBCs during thermal cycling have not yet been fully elucidated. In this study, the superalloy substrate was grit-blasted using various processing parameters, followed by the deposition of thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) consisting of a metallic bond coat (BC) and a ceramic top coat (TC). After thermal shock tests, local thinning or discontinuities in the thermally grown oxide (TGO) layer were observed in TBCs where large grit particles were embedded at the BC/substrate interface. Moreover, cracks originated at the concave positions of the TGO layer and propagated vertically towards BC; these cracks may be associated with additional stress imposed by the foreign grit particles during thermal cycling. Denture fractures are a common problem in dental practice, and their repair is considered a first option to restore their functional properties. However, the inter-material resistance may become compromised. Typically, the bond between these materials weakens. Therefore, various surface treatment methods may be considered to enhance their mechanical properties. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) heat-polymerized resin (HPR) was used as the repaired material, cold-polymerized material (CPR) for the repairs, and different variants of alumina abrasive blasting (AB), methyl methacrylate (M), ethyl acetate (EA), methylene chloride (CH), and isopropyl alcohol (IA) treatments were applied. Finally, combined surface treatments were chosen and analyzed. Surface morphologies after treatments were observed by scanning electron microscopy and the flexural, shear, and impact strengths were tested. AB and chemical treatment with CH, M, and EA was used to improve all mechanical properties, and further improvement of the properties could be achieved by combining both types of treatments. Varied changes in surface morphologies were observed. Treatment with IA yielded less favorable results due to the low impact strength. The best results were achieved for the combination of AB and CH, but during the application of CH it was necessary to strictly control the exposure time. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The industries of energy, transportation, and other engineering components all benefit greatly from the use of medium carbon (C) steel EN8. For these applications, welding is typically used to join the material. Conventionally welded joints, however, struggle to meet the exacting standards of industrial applications. In this comprehensive study, the tensile strength, microhardness, and microstructure of joints made of medium C EN8 steel using manual metal arc (MMA), metal inert gas (MIG), tungsten inert gas (TIG), and submerged arc (SAW) welding were investigated. These weld joints were then subjected to the shot blasting method to determine the effect on the mechanical properties of these weldments, Different response characteristics have been studied in relation to the shot blasting with various time periods. A detailed characterisation of the samples has been carried out optical microscopy, surface electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), optical emission spectroscopy (OES), microhardness, and tensile testing with fractographical analysis. The maximum percentage increase in the microhardness in fusion zone (FZ) occurred in case of TIG welded specimens, i.e. 29.63% after 25 min of abrasive blasting period. However, the maximum change in the tensile strength, i.e. 10.53% has been observed for MMA welded specimens after 15 min of abrasive blasting period. Microstructural analysis revealed TIG has a columnar dendritic structure, MIG and SAW have an equiaxed dendritic structure. MMA has a cellular dendritic structure. The process of roughing surfaces by sandblasting before the coating is essential to obtain consistently high tensile strength between coating and substrate, for carbon-deposit elimination, and to remove some flaws such as piston cracks and minor chips in the top crown. This work aims to investigate the effect of sandblasting pressure and alumina volume on the roughness of the AK12MMgN alloy substrate and the roughness of the deposited galvanic plasma modification (GPM) coatings after blast cleaning, and the adhesion strength of these coatings. Many technological factors, such as grain size, pressure and time of blasting, distance to the abrasive, angle of blasting, and the hardness of the surface parts subjected to blasting, determine the magnitude and nature of surface roughness. Thus, the sandblasting process must be controlled appropriately in order to obtain a high GPM coating with a high coating-to-substrate adhesion value. More importantly, the process parameters must be optimized. The results indicate the importance of the roughness of the base after sandblasting of the AK12MMgN alloy and the roughness of the subsequently applied coatings in determining the bond strength value. Injection moulding (IM) is a manufacturing technique used to produce intricately detailed plastic components with various surface finishes, enabling the production of high-tolerance functional parts at scale. Conversely, stereolithography (SLA) three-dimensional (3D) printing offers an alternative method for fabricating moulds with shorter lead times and reduced costs compared to conventional manufacturing. However, fabrication in a layer-by-layer fashion results in anisotropic properties and noticeable layer lines, known as the stair-step effect. This study investigates post-processing techniques for plaques with contrasting stair-step effects fabricated from commercially available SLA high-temperature resin, aiming to assess their suitability for IM applications. The results reveal that annealing significantly enhances part hardness and heat deflection temperature (HDT), albeit with a trade-off involving reduced flexural strength. Experimental findings indicate that the optimal stage for abrasive surface treatment is after UV curing and before annealing. Plaques exhibiting contrasting stair-step effects are characterized and evaluated for weight loss, dimensional accuracy, and surface roughness. The results demonstrate that abrasive blasting effectively removes the stair-step effect without compromising geometry while achieving polished surface finishes with roughness average (RA) values of 0.1 μm through sanding. Overall, a combination of abrasive blasting and sanding proves capable of precisely defining surface roughness without significant geometry loss, offering a viable approach to achieving traditional IM finishes suitable for both functional and aesthetic purposes. Objective. This study investigated the effect of air-abrasion and erbium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser treatments on push-out bond strength (PBS) between hard relining material and metal housing of an overdenture attachment system. Material and Methods. A total of 36 metal housings were randomly divided into 3 subgroups according to surface pretreatments (n=12): Control (no surface treatment; C), air-abrasion (A), and Er:YAG laser (L). Surface roughness (Ra) of specimens was determined using a profilometer. One additional specimen per group was evaluated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The hard relining material was bonded to metal housings, and a PBS test was performed using a universal testing machine. Data were statistically analyzed using 1-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), Tukey's honestly significant difference (HSD), and Tamhane's T2 tests (α=.05). Results. C and L groups showed the lowest and highest Ra values, respectively. The mean Ra of the A group was statistically different from the mean values of the C and L groups (P<.001). The L group showed higher PBS values than the C group (P<.05), whereas the A group exhibited statistically similar PBS values to both C and L groups (P>.05). Conclusions. Air-abrasion did not significantly increase the bond strength between the metal housing and hard relining material. Purpose: To investigate the impact of pretreatment and conditioning on shear bond strength (SBS), surface free energy (SFE) and surface roughness (SR) between polyetheretherketone (PEEK) and cold-cured polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA). Materials and Methods: PEEK substrates (Dentokeep PEEK Disc, nt-trading) were air abraded with Al2O3 particles of different grain sizes applied with varying pressure at 1) 0.2 MPa - 50 μm Al2O3; 2) 0.4 MPa - 50 μm Al2O3; 3) 0.2 MPa - 110 μm Al2O3; 4) 0.4 MPa - 110 μm Al2O3; or 5) without air abrasion (n = 172/group). Surface properties were quantified using SFE and SR (n = 10/group), and scanning electron microscope imaging (n = 2/group). Substrates were conditioned with a) Visio.link (VL, Bredent); b) Scotchbond Universal (SU, 3M Oral Care); c) Bonding Fluid (BF, Schütz Dental); or d) without conditioning (WC; n = 40/subgroup) and bonded to the polymer (Futura Jet, Schütz Dental). SBS and fracture types were determined before and after 10,000 thermal cycles (n = 20/subgroup). Univariate ANOVA, Kruskal-Wallis test, Mann-Whitney U-test, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates, and Weibull distribution were computed (p < 0.05). Ciba-Geigy tables and the chi-squared test were used to analyze fracture type distributions. Results: An increase in particle size and pressure resulted in similar or increased SBS, Weibull characteristic strength, and Weibull moduli (p < 0.001 - 0.046). The lowest results were observed for the control group (without air abrasion), while pretreatment with 0.4 MPa - 110 μm Al2O3 presented the highest values (p < 0.001). In comparison with the other conditioning procedures, VL showed high (p < 0.001 - 0.03), and SU and WC low SBS (p < 0.001 - 0.006). Although it did not influence SFE, an increase in particle size and pressure led to an increased SR (p < 0.001). Conclusion: Pretreatment with 0.4 MPa - 110 μm Al2O3 can be recommended to increase bonding properties between PEEK and PMMA. Application of adhesives such as VL can enhance SBS further. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of pre-treatment air abrasion of surfaces using bioactive glass 45S5 on the progression of erosion in bovine enamel induced by a common soft drink.Materials and Methods: Twelve intact bovine incisors were selected and 24 enamel samples were prepared and randomly assigned to two groups (n = 12): 1. control group, no anti-erosive treatment; 2. experimental group: samples were air abraded with bioglass 45S5 before the erosive challenge. The enamel samples were submitted to erosive cycling using a common soft drink. Enamel surface loss was evaluated using optical profilometry; surface microhardness and roughness changes were determined using Vickers method and Vertical Scanning Interferometry, respectively. In addition, SEM observations and EDS analysis were performed to detect any alterations in surface morphology and mineral content. The data were statistically analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc test at a significance level of α = 0.05.Results: The experimental group exhibited less (18.7%) surface loss than did the control group (p < 0.05), while also presenting a statistically significantly smaller decrease in surface microhardness compared to the control group after erosive cycling (p < 0.05). However, neither group showed a statistically significant change in surface roughness (p > 0.05). After the treatments, changes in surface morphology and mineral content of enamel were observed.Conclusions: Surface pre-treatment using air abrasion bioglass 45S5 may help prevent enamel erosion induced by excessive consumption of soft drinks. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of surface conditioning methods and aging on the repair bond strength between resin composite and nanoceramic CAD/CAM resin. Materials and Methods: Twenty-four blocks of nanoceramic CAD/CAM resin (NCR) (Lava Ultimate, 3M Oral Care) (10 x 5 x 2 mm3) and resin composite (Filtek Z350, 3M Oral Care) (RC) were made, embedded in acrylic resin, polished (#600, #800, #1200) and randomly divided into 8 groups (n = 12 each) according to surface conditioning methods (air abrasion with 30-μm CoJet [CJ] or air abrasion with 50-μm Al2O3 [AB]) and aging prior to repair (without aging, 24 h in water at 37°C; with aging 6 months in water at 37°C). The blocks were air abraded (20 s, 2.5 bar, 10 mm) using a standardized device. A layer of adhesive resin (Scotchbond Universal) was applied (20 s) and photopolymerized for 20 s. RC cylinders (Ø = 2 mm; h = 2 mm) were then bonded to the NCR substrates using a Teflon matrix and photopolymerized for 40 s. All specimens were thermocycled (10,000 cycles, 5°C-55°C) and submitted to the shear bond test (50 kgf, 0.5 mm/min) to measure repair strength. Data (MPa) were analyzed using 3-way ANOVA and Tukey's test (α = 0.05). Failure analysis was performed using stereomicroscopy (20X). Results: ANOVA revealed a significant effect of only the "material" factor (p = 0.00). The group NCR6mCJ presented bond strengths (29.37 ± 5.41) which were significantly higher than those of the NCR24hCJ (20.88 ± 5.74) and RC groups (p < 0.05). The group RC24hCJ (19.71 ± 4.21) presented the lowest shear bond strength (p < 0.05). Failure analysis revealed predominantly type B mixed failures (adhesive+cohesive in the substrate material) except for the groups NCR24hCJ and NCR6mAB, where mainly type C failure (adhesive+cohesive at the RC) was observed. Conclusion: Air abrasion with Al2O3 particles or silicatization with CoJet followed by adhesive resin application are effective surface conditioning methods for the repair of nanoceramic CAD/CAM resin with resin composite. Purpose: The air-particle-abrasion on zirconia in the gingival area of connectors and pontics in fixed partial dentures appears to increase fracture resistance. This study evaluated 'in situ' biofilm formation on the zirconia surface after different air-particle-abrasion protocols.Materials and Methods: Ninety sintered blocks (5 × 5 × 2 mm) of yttrium partially stabilised zirconia (Y-TZP) were obtained and randomised among nine groups according to the factors 'type of particle' (Alumina 50 and 110 µm; Cojet and Rocatec) and 'pressure' (2.5 and 3.5 bar) used for sandblasting for 10 s. The surface roughness (Ra/Rz) was measured before and after sandblasting. For the in-situ analyses, custom-made removable intraoral devices n = 10 with one sample of each group attached to the buccal area were used by volunteers for 8 h at night. The specimens were analysed under confocal microscopy to quantify both biovolume and thickness of the initial biofilm formed. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Dunnett's tests were performed (5%).Results: The roughness values ranged from 0.05 to 0.39 µm for Ra and from 0.35 to 2.11 µm for Rz, p = 0.00. Mean biofilm thickness ranged from 0.06 and 0.54 µm (p = 0.005), while the biovolume values were between 0.02 and 0.61 µm3/µm2 (p = 0.002). Values statistically significant for biofilm thickness and biovolume were found in groups sandblasted with Rocatec using 3.5 bar.Conclusion: In order to increase the fracture resistance of zirconia fixed partial dentures (FPDs), the air particle abrasion of zirconia with SiO2 (110 μm/3.5 bar), in the gingival area of connectors and pontics, should be avoided. Purpose: To evaluate the influence of new air-abrasion powders with different silica concentrations (silica-coated aluminum oxide) and aging on the bond strength between composite cement and Y-TZP ceramic. Materials and Methods: Ceramic slices (7 x 6.3 x 2 mm³) were randomly allocated into 8 groups (n = 20) considering different surface treatments (SiC: silica-coated aluminum oxide particles; AlOx: aluminum oxide particles; 7% Si and 20% Si: experimental powders consisting of 7% and 20% silica-coated of AlOx respectively) and aging (baseline: 24 h at 37°C in water; aged: 90 days at 37°C in water + 12,000 thermal cycles). A blinded researcher per- r formed the air-abrasion procedure for 10 s (identical parameters for all groups). Composite resin cylinders (Ø = 3 mm) were cemented onto the silanized ceramic surfaces, light cured, and subjected to shear bond-strength testing (wire loop Ø = 0.5 mm). The topography of the powders and air-abraded surfaces was analyzed using SEM and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The elemental composition of the powders and air-abraded surfaces was analyzed with energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and surface wetting of the air-abraded surfaces was also determined by contact-angle measurements. Results: Under baseline conditions, all groups presented similar bond strengths, but only SiC and 7% Si yielded unaltered bond strength after aging. SiC and 7% Si presented lower contact angles. All groups presented similar surface topographies. The silica content was also similar among groups, except for AlOx. Conclusion: 7% Si and SiC presented similar bond strength and better bonding performance after aging than AlOx and 20% Si. Abrasive blast cleaning is often done for steel structures before applying various protective coatings, which produces rough surfaces with changes in fatigue properties. This problem has been addressed in the low- and high-cycle fatigue regimes; however, the effect of surface roughness in combination with different loading parameters on the ultra-low cycle fatigue (ULCF) life has not been reported thus far. To this aim, a total of 59 ULCF tests on designed specimens of SM400 steel with five levels of surface roughness were performed under various loading frequencies and displacement amplitudes. The analysis of experimental results indicates a substantial reduction in fatigue life with an increase in the surface roughness and loading amplitude and a decrease in the loading frequency. Additionally, the strength degradation, dissipation energy, and load–displacement curves are discussed in detail. With the use of experimental data, a new life prediction model characterizing the combined effects of surface roughness, loading frequency, and loading amplitude on the ULCF life is proposed. Moreover, the proposed model is validated by predicting the fatigue life under variable and constant loading amplitude patterns. Comparison between experimental and theoretical results shows that the proposed model accurately estimates the ULCF life within an error band of ±15%, with a reasonable selection of model parameters. This study compares subtractive manufacturing (SM) and additive manufacturing (AM) techniques in the production of stainless-steel parts with non-stick coatings. While subtractive manufacturing involves the machining of rolled products, additive manufacturing employs the FFF (fused filament fabrication) technique with metal filament and sintering. The applied non-stick coatings are commercially available and are manually sprayed with a spray gun, followed by a curing process. They are an FEP (fluorinated ethylene propylene)-based coating and a sol–gel ceramic coating. Key properties such as surface roughness, water droplet sliding angle, adhesion to the substrate and wear resistance were examined using abrasive blasting techniques. In the additive manufacturing process, a higher roughness of the samples was detected. In terms of sliding angle, variations were observed in the FEP-based coatings and no variations were observed in the ceramic coatings, with a slight increase for FEP in AM. In terms of adhesion to the substrate, the ceramic coatings applied in the additive process showed a superior behavior to that of subtractive manufacturing. On the other hand, FEP coatings showed comparable results for both techniques. In the wear resistance test, ceramic coatings outperformed FEP coatings for both techniques. In summary, additive manufacturing of non-stick coatings on stainless steel showed remarkable advantages in terms of roughness, adhesion and wear resistance compared to the conventional manufacturing approach. Additively manufactured (AMed) titanium products are typically produced by electron beam melting (EBM), since oxidation of titanium alloy surface can be suppressed in vacuum environment. The surface roughness of AMed titanium products becomes more than 200 µm Rz, and the very rough surface would lead to reduction in fatigue strength. Therefore, a post surface finishing process is required. Abrasive blasting is one of the common surface smoothing processes of AMed metal products. Large surface roughness can be decreased, and compressive residual stress can be introduced to the surface. However, there is a limitation to reduction of surface roughness to several µm Rz. On the other hand, it was recently found that AMed metal surface produced by powder bed fusion with laser beam could be smoothed by large-area electron beam (LEB) irradiation. However, it is difficult to smooth surface with large initial surface roughness, and a tensile residual stress may be generated on the surface. In this study, surface smoothing and change in residual stress of AMed titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4 V) were proposed by combination of grit blasting and LEB irradiation. Surface roughness of AMed Ti-6Al-4 V alloy significantly decreases from 265 to about 2.0 µm Rz by combination of grit blasting and LEB irradiation. Reduction rate of surface roughness by LEB irradiation linearly increases with decreasing mean width of blasted surface. Influence of the mean width on smoothing effect by LEB irradiation can be explained by thermo-fluid analysis. Background: Is abrasive blasting accompanied by the phenomenon of driving abrasive particles into the conditioned material? Methods: Three hundred and fifteen cylindrical disks of three types of metal alloy (chromium/cobalt, chromium/nickel, titanium, and sintered zirconium dioxide) were divided into four groups (n = 35) and sandblasted at pressures of 0.2, 0.4, or 0.6 MPa with aluminum oxide (Al2O3), grain size 50, 110, or 250 μm. Then, the surface topography was examined using a scanning microscope, and the amount of embedded grain was measured using quantitative metallography. For each group, five samples were randomly selected and subjected to Vickers hardness testing. In the statistical analyses, a three-factor analysis of variance was carried out, considering the type of material, the size of gradation of the abrasive, and the amount of pressure. Results: The smallest amounts of embedded abrasive (2.62) were observed in the ZrO2 treatment, and the largest (38.19) occurred in the treatment of the Ti alloy. An increase in the gradation and the pressure were a systematic increase in the amount of embedded grain. Conclusions: After abrasive blasting, abrasive particles were found on the surface of the materials. The amount of driven abrasive depends on the hardness of the processed material. Abrasive blasting, sometimes known as sandblasting, is a method used to change the surface condition of materials, clean surfaces, and prepare surfaces for applications such as paint, bonding, coating, etc. The abrasive materials used in abrasive blasting are applied to the surface with compressed air or water and vary according to the purpose of application. The abrasive materials used have negative effects on the environment and human health. So far, organic materials have been used in limited applications in abrasive blasting. However, these materials have a high potential of usage since they are environmentally friendly, safe for human health, and have non-toxic and sustainable properties. In this study, the usability of three different organic wastes (walnut shell, olive pomace and mussel shell) recovered by recycling in abrasive blasting was investigated. In addition, the effect of blasting distance (5, 10 and 15 mm), blasting time (10, 20 and 30 s), powder type (mussel shell, olive pomace and walnut shell) and grain size (38, 45 and 63 µm) on surface roughness have been investigated using the Taguchi L9 experimental design. Regression models were built using ANOVA (Analysis of Variance). Moreover, the surface condition after abrasive blasting was examined using an Al2O3 abrasive and compared with other samples. As a result, 5 mm, 30 s, mussel shell and 45 µm test sets were recommended for "larger is better" and it was determined that the blasting time had the greatest effect on the surface roughness by 50.19%. On the other hand, 10 mm, 20 s, walnut shell and 63 µm test sets were recommended for "smaller is better", and it was determined that blasting time had the greatest effect on the surface roughness by 39.02%. While there was an increase compared to the surface roughness values before abrasive blasting in the first set of experiments, it was determined that the organic material had a polishing rather than an abrasion effect in the second set of experiments. Purpose: Numerous approaches have been proposed for the treatment of peri-implantitis, but to date, none has been identified as the most effective. This study compared the efficacy of implantoplasty and glycine air polishing for the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. Materials and Methods: This prospective, randomized, parallel-group trial included 31 patients presenting with 42 implants with peri-implantitis. Patients underwent surgical treatment by implantoplasty (test group, n = 22) or glycine air polishing (control group, n = 20). Clinical parameters (Plaque Index), bleeding on probing (BOP), suppuration on probing (SOP), probing pocket depth (PPD), relative attachment level (RAL), and mucosal recession were assessed before surgery (baseline), and at 3 months and 6 months after surgery. Bone loss was recorded at baseline and 6 months. Two composite outcomes were also evaluated, according to the following definitions: (1) mean PPD reduction ≥ 0.5 mm + no further loss of bone; (2) PPD ≤ 5 mm, absence of BOP/SOP, and no additional mean bone loss ≥ 0.5 mm. Results: Plaque Index remained low (< 0.5) in both groups for the duration of the study. Mean BOP, SOP, PPD, and RAL were greatly reduced at 3 months in both groups, and remained low between 3 months and 6 months. Bone loss was stable in the implantoplasty group, and slight bone gain (0.5 mm) was observed in the glycine airpolishing group. There were no significant differences between the two groups in any parameter, and composite treatment outcomes were similar in both groups, irrespective of the definition. Conclusion: Within the limitations of this 6-month follow-up study, implantoplasty is as effective as glycine air polishing for the surgical treatment of peri-implantitis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The objective was to assess the effect of fissure depth and enamel surface preparation protocols on penetration of resin-based, giomer and glass-ionomer fissure sealants.Materials and Methods: Ninety extracted third molars were assigned into three groups according to the material used. All three groups were subsequently divided depending on tooth preparation: no pretreatment or surface preparation with 10% polyacrylic acid, 37% phosphoric acid, or self-etching adhesive. In addition, Er,Cr:YSGG laser or air abrasion were employed in all subgroups. The penetration was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy.Results: The groups that were pretreated with an appropriate acid resulted in superior penetration of glass-ionomer and resin-based sealants when compared with other surface preparation protocols (p < 0.05). The exception was teeth treated with both air abrasion and acid etching. Both preparation protocol and fissure depth significantly affected the sealant penetration (p < 0.05), but fissure depth had a greater impact on fissure penetration than did enamel surface pretreatment.Conclusion: All investigated materials exhibit similar properties regarding sealant penetration. Penetration of a fissure sealant is significantly influenced by the fissure depth. In regard to enamel surface preparation protocol, a pretreatment with phosphoric acid in resin-based and polyacrylic acid in glass-ionomers appears to be essential in obtaining the adequate penetration of a sealing material. The purpose of this in vitro study was to determine the effect of airborne-particle abrasion process parameters on the strength of the Ni-Cr alloy–ceramic bond. One hundred and forty-four Ni-Cr disks were airborne-particle abraded with 50, 110 and 250 µm Al2O3 at a pressure of 400 and 600 kPa. After treatment, the specimens were bonded to dental ceramics by firing. The strength of the metal–ceramic bond was determined using the shear strength test. The results were analyzed with three-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and the Tukey honest significant difference (HSD) test (α = 0.05). The examination also considered the thermal loads (5000 cycles, 5–55 °C) to which the metal–ceramic joint is subjected during exploitation. There is a close correlation between the strength of the Ni-Cr alloy–dental ceramic joint and the alloy roughness parameters after abrasive blasting: Rpk (reduced peak height), Rsm (the mean spacing of irregularities), Rsk (skewness of the profile) and RPc (peak density). The highest strength of the Ni-Cr alloy surface bonding with dental ceramics under operating conditions is provided by abrasive blasting under 600 kPa pressure with 110 µm Al2O3 particles (p < 0.05). Both the abrasive blasting pressure and the particle size of the Al2O3 abrasive significantly affect the joint's strength (p < 0.05). The most optimal blasting parameters are 600 kPa pressure with 110 µm Al2O3 particles (p < 0.05). They allow the highest bond strength between the Ni-Cr alloy and dental ceramics to be achieved. The interaction between implanted materials and body tissues at the cellular level is a critical factor for the success of biomedical implants. Surface modifications, including grinding, polishing, abrasive blasting, and chemical etching together with the application of bioactive coatings such as calcium phosphates are commonly employed to improve implant performance. Each surface treatment alters the topology, roughness, and residual mechanical stresses in the material which can affect cellular responses. In this study, we examine the impact of various surface treatments on the surface morphology, stress state, and elemental composition of titanium alloy samples comparable to commercially available implants. The residual stress values, measured using XRD, have been found to be 400 ± 5 MPa for polished samples, 350 ± 10 MPa for rolled samples, 345 ± 5 MPa for abrasive blasted samples, 215 ± 3 MPa for etched samples, and 260 ± 10 MPa for coated samples. Given the potential influence of residual stress gradients on cell behavior, it is important to consider the stress state as a criterion for implant biocompatibility. Further investigation into the relationship between the residual stress and the cellular responses will contribute to the development of more effective implant materials and surface treatments, ultimately enhancing osseointegration and overall implant performance. This study highlights the need for a comprehensive understanding of the role of the residual stress in implant biocompatibility and suggests a novel direction for future research in this field. [Display omitted] Abrasive-blasted steel surfaces exhibit a complex, multi-substrate environment. Adsorption to contaminant substrates can reduce the amount of available corrosion inhibitor and decrease its efficiency. Knowledge of where inhibitors preferentially adsorb is required. The quantitative extent and strength of adsorption of the representative corrosion inhibitor benzotriazole (BTAH) from toluene to particular substrates is given, including corrections for solution self-association, and complemented by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), sum-frequency generation spectroscopy (SFG), and quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) measurements. All substrates show adsorbed BTAH layers. Based on the adsorption strength, preferential adsorption is found to be in the order steel > iron oxide > calcium carbonate and garnet > silica – this is relevant when there is limited BTAH. However, with ample BTAH, the amounts adsorbed in the plateau regions of the isotherm are more relevant and the order is calcium carbonate and silica > iron oxide > garnet > steel. Although the contaminant substrates deplete the BTAH concentration, the steel should still have a complete monolayer of BTAH inhibitor. One of the objectives of the circular economy is solving the world's plastic pollution crisis and recycling of materials by ensuring less waste. The motivation of this study was to demonstrate the possibility of recycling two types of wastes with a high risk of pollution, such as plastic based polypropylene and abrasive blasting grit wastes in asphalt roads. The effects of adding together polypropylene based microplastics and grit waste in asphalt mixture for wear layer performance have been shown in this study. The morphology and elemental composition of the hot asphalt mixture samples before and after freeze–thaw cycle were examined by SEM–EDX and the performance of the modified asphalt mixture was determined with laboratory tests including Marshall stability, flow rate, solid–liquid report, apparent density, and water absorption. A hot asphalt mixture suitable for making wear layer in road construction, containing aggregates, filler, bitumen, abrasive blasting grit waste and polypropylene based microplastics is also disclosed. In the recipe of modified hot asphalt mixtures were added 3 proportions of polypropylene-based microplastics such as 0.1%, 0.3% and 0.6%. An improvement of the mixture performance is shown at the asphalt mixture sample with 0.3% of polypropylene. In addition, polypropylene-based microplastics are bond with aggregates from mixture well, so the polypropylene-modified hot asphalt mixture can effectively decrease the appearance of cracks during sudden temperature changes. Surface topography in general is not easy to characterize due to a great number of different features that appear on it. It is still more challenging for machined textured surfaces that are of high functional significance for tribological purposes. For practical reasons, there is a need to describe such surfaces using only a small number of parameters. Which of them represent surface details the best is still an open issue. To find out which parameters can be the most suitable in that case, three groups of machined textured surfaces were prepared. They were plateau-honed cylinder surfaces made of gray cast iron, steel, and bronze surfaces with isolated dimples and steel surfaces after abrasive blasting followed by lapping. All of them were measured by means of a white light interferometer. Different parameters and relationships were evaluated and based on them correlation and regression analyses were used. The basic description contained statistically independent parameters that can be used in production control, while the wider description in scientific research. In general, parameters of random surfaces were more intercorrelated than those of surfaces with isolated dimples. As was found for the basic description of random two-process surfaces, five parameters were enough while description of textured surfaces with isolated oil pockets needed six. In wider, scientific description, regardless the surface type seven parameters contained the necessary information about the surface. It was also proved that a pair of parameters, the emptiness coefficient Sp/Sz and Sq/Sa, can describe the shape of the ordinate distribution of machined textured surfaces better than, for example, skewness Ssk and kurtosis Sku, commonly used for that purpose. This study determined some physical changes that occur on wood surfaces aged in a marine environment resulting from the removal of coatings using environmentally friendly media blasting. Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) wood coated with water-borne and synthetic paints was exposed to a marine environment for 100 days. The aged paint layers were removed using five different media (sodium bicarbonate, hazelnut shell granules, corncob granules, walnut shell granules, and apricot kernel granules), varying blasting angles (45° and 90°), blasting distances (7 and 10 cm), air pressures (2 and 2.5 bar), and nozzle diameters (0.5 and 0.8 mm) using an automated blasting cabinet. The results showed that corn cob granules and sodium bicarbonate were less effective than other media for removing paint layers at the application parameters. The samples were tested for hardness, gloss, and total color change. Samples exhibited a remarkable total color change and gloss increase when the blasting distance was increased from 7 cm to 10 cm, while their hardness decreased. The highest gloss value was obtained on surfaces blasted with a nozzle diameter of 0.5 cm. Surfaces blasted with a nozzle diameter of 8 mm, however, yielded the highest total color change and hardest values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through-wall corrosion damage in pipelines can be repaired using a bonded metallic patch. Several parameters influence the repair performance, such as the surface preparation. Offshore oil platforms are restricted areas, and sparkling derived from surface preparation can have drastic consequences. Additionally, an industrial climber is required to access some areas that are difficult in the repairing process. In this work, the influence of alternative, easy to apply in the field, surface preparation methods on the burst pressure in pipes with defects repaired by a bonded metallic patch is investigated. Three different methods were considered: treatment with an abrasive-free rotating bristle machine and the application of a special primer directly on the oxidized surface without any additional mechanical treatment; and wet abrasive blasting. Initially, to verify the difference between these different systems, bonded single-lap joints are analyzed and then, hydrostatic tests in 6" diameter specimens with a circular hole of 1". Although the use of a rotating bristle machine gives the best roughness and strength results, the other alternative methods are less time-consuming, assure reasonable strength, and are easier to be used in the field. Ledeburitic tool steel X210Cr12 was processed by passing through a semi-solid state with subsequent forming on a hydraulic press, thus achieving a fine-grained martensitic matrix, uniformly dispersed fine precipitates, and removal of sharp-edged primary chromium carbides. The hardness value was over 700 HV10. The decomposition of austenite and the promotion of further carbide precipitation were carried out by cryogenic treatment or a combination of cryogenic treatment and tempering. Transmission electron microscopy showed that tempering after cryogenic treatment also led to the precipitation of needle-like M3C carbide, unlike the previous regimes. Furthermore, after the combined treatment, the microstructures showed a significant wear resistance, which was detected both by a waterjet abrasive blast test and a laboratory pin on disk test. Both tests showed a significant increase in wear resistance compared to the initial condition and special high wear resistance steels, such as Hardox 450 and Hardox 600. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To investigate the impact of pretreatment and conditioning on bonding behavior of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) to methylmethacrylate(MMA)- and dimethacrylate(DMA)-based polymers. Materials and Methods: 1200 PEKK substrates (Pekkton ivory) were fabricated, air abraded (110 µm, Al2O3) and divided into 8 pretreatment groups as follows: 1. Visio.link (VL); 2. VL+ opaquer; 3. Pekk Bond (PB); 4. PB + opaquer; 5. plasma; 6. plasma + opaquer; 7. plasma + VL+ opaquer; 8. plasma + PB + opaquer. A low-density cold oxygen plasma was used to treat specimens in groups 5-8. All pretreated PEKK substrates were bonded with either MMA-based polymers (denture acrylic: "Anaxdent acryline") or DMA-based polymers (veneering composites: flowable "Anaxdent dentin flow" or packable "Anaxdent dentin paste"). On denture acrylic, the anaxgum opaquer paste was applied, and on veneering composites, the anaxblend opaquer paste. All specimens were stored in water for 24 h at 37°C, and 20 specimens of each subgroup were additionally thermocycled (5°C/55°C, 10,000x). Tensile bond strength (TBS) was measured and analyzed with the general linear model analysis, Kaplan-Meier survival estimates, and Breslow-Gehan tests. Results: The combination of plasma and VL showed the highest TBS results, followed by VL and the combination of plasma and PB. The lowest TBS was observed among PEKK specimens treated with plasma and without pretreatment, followed by specimens conditioned with PB. The application of an opaquer layer increased the TBS. Bonding to PEKK with MMA-based polymers showed higher TBS results than with DMA-based polymers. Among DMA-based polymers, the flowable polymer bonded significantly better to PEKK compared to paste polymer. After thermocycling, the TBS decreased. Among a broad spectrum of AM technologies, electron beam melting (EBM) is widely applied in AM process for producing titanium alloy parts. In general, AMed metal products have very rough surface of more than 200µm R z, since relatively large beads are arranged on their surface by scanning electron beam. Moreover, surface irregularities such as spatter and cavity are also generated on the surface. Rough surface and surface irregularities would lead to reduction in surface strength and poor appearance. Therefore, post surface finishing processes are required to smooth the surface of AMed metal products. One of the common surface smoothing processes is abrasive blasting. Large surface roughness can be decreased by abrasive blasting, and compressive residual stress can be introduced to the surface. However, there is a limitation to reduction of surface roughness. However, it is not easy to smooth surface with large initial surface roughness, and a tensile residual stress may be generated on the surface. In this paper, surface smoothing of AMed titanium alloy by combination of abrasive blasting and large-area EB irradiation was proposed. At first, the AMed titanium alloy surface was blasted to reduce the initial large surface roughness to some extent and change the surface topography. Then, large-area EB was irradiated to the blasted surface. It is made clear that surface roughness significantly decreases when large-area EB is irradiated to the blasted surface with small mean width. Moreover, tensile residual stress generated in large-area EB irradiation can be reduced by abrasive blasting. Therefore, combination of abrasive blasting and large-area EB irradiation is effective for efficient reduction of large surface roughness of AMed titanium alloy. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
