1. Robust detection and refinement of saliency identification

Abstract

Abstract Salient object detection is an increasingly popular topic in the computer vision field, particularly for images with complex backgrounds and diverse object parts. Background information is an essential factor in detecting salient objects. This paper suggests a robust and effective methodology for salient object detection. This method involves two main stages. The first stage is to produce a saliency detection map based on the dense and sparse reconstruction of image regions using a refined background dictionary. The refined background dictionary uses a boundary conductivity measurement to exclude salient object regions near the image's boundary from a background dictionary. In the second stage, the CascadePSP network is integrated to refine and correct the local boundaries of the saliency mask to highlight saliency objects more uniformly. Using six evaluation indexes, experimental outcomes conducted on three datasets show that the proposed approach performs effectively compared to the state-of-the-art methods in salient object detection, particularly in identifying the challenging salient objects located near the image's boundary. These results demonstrate the potential of the proposed framework for various computer vision applications.

4. Shifting Paradigms in Environmental Research Methods through the Visual Arts

Abstract

Arts-based research offers a potentially valuable approach for students trained in the positivist tradition of environmental issues to expand their repertoire. This article traces the experience of students in an undergraduate course that examines the US food system through immersive photography, using arts-based research as the core methodological theme of exploration and inquiry. The research approach to assessing student growth and integration of this model builds on both quantitative and qualitative designs, offering a triangulated look at interdisciplinarity. The article contemplates the ways in which situated learning through visual immersion helps students construct new ways of understanding the world around them. Further, this research promotes opportunities for research-grounded paradigm shifts with the help of supportive environments, scaffolding embodied knowledge through creative experience.

Abstract

Language production has often been described as impaired in psychiatric diseases such as in psychosis. Nevertheless, little is known about the characteristics of linguistic difficulties and their relation with other cognitive domains in patients with a first episode of psychosis (FEP), either affective or non-affective. To deepen our comprehension of linguistic profile in FEP, 133 patients with FEP (95 non-affective, FEP-NA; 38 affective, FEP-A) and 133 healthy controls (HC) were assessed with a narrative discourse task. Speech samples were systematically analyzed with a well-established multilevel procedure investigating both micro- (lexicon, morphology, syntax) and macro-linguistic (discourse coherence, pragmatics) levels of linguistic processing. Executive functioning and IQ were also evaluated. Both linguistic and neuropsychological measures were secondarily implemented with a machine learning approach in order to explore their predictive accuracy in classifying participants as FEP or HC. Compared to HC, FEP patients showed language production difficulty at both micro- and macro-linguistic levels. As for the former, FEP produced shorter and simpler sentences and fewer words per minute, along with a reduced number of lexical fillers, compared to HC. At the macro-linguistic level, FEP performance was impaired in local coherence, which was paired with a higher percentage of utterances with semantic errors. Linguistic measures were not correlated with any neuropsychological variables. No significant differences emerged between FEP-NA and FEP-A (p≥0.02, after Bonferroni correction). Machine learning analysis showed an accuracy of group prediction of 76.36% using language features only, with semantic variables being the most impactful. Such a percentage was enhanced when paired with clinical and neuropsychological variables. Abstract

In this paper, we propose an effective saliency detection method based on dense and sparse representation in-terms of an optimized background template. Firstly, the input image is divided into compact and uniform super-pixels. Then, the optimized background template is produced by introducing boundary conductivity measurement to improve the dense and sparse representation of the image's super-pixels in terms of the optimized background, where the reconstruction error represents a saliency measure. Based on the optimized template, two saliency maps are generated by dense and sparse representation. Finally, the Bayesian framework used to integrate the two saliency maps to obtain the final one. Experimental results show that the proposed method performs favorably against eight state-of-the-art methods. In addition, the proposed method is shown to be more effective in highlighting the challenging salient objects that touch the image boundary.

Abstract

Arts-based research offers a potentially valuable approach for students trained in the positivist tradition of environmental issues to expand their repertoire. This article traces the experience of students in an undergraduate course that examines the US food system through immersive photography, using arts-based research as the core methodological theme of exploration and inquiry. The research approach to assessing student growth and integration of this model builds on both quantitative and qualitative designs, offering a triangulated look at interdisciplinarity. The article contemplates the ways in which situated learning through visual immersion helps students construct new ways of understanding the world around them. Further, this research promotes opportunities for research-grounded paradigm shifts with the help of supportive environments, scaffolding embodied knowledge through creative experience.

Abstract

Tagged and cine magnetic resonance imaging (tMRI and cMRI) techniques are used for evaluating regional and global heart function, respectively. Measuring global function parameters directly from tMRI is challenging due to the obstruction of the anatomical structure by the tagging pattern. The purpose of this study was to develop a method for processing the tMRI images to improve the myocardium-blood contrast in order to estimate global function parameters from the processed images. The developed method consists of two stages: (1) removing the tagging pattern based on analyzing and modeling the signal distribution in the image’s k-space, and (2) enhancing the blood-myocardium contrast based on analyzing the signal intensity variability in the two tissues. The developed method is implemented on images from twelve human subjects. Ventricular mass measured with the developed method showed good agreement with that measured from gold-standard cMRI images. Further, preliminary results on measuring ventricular volume using the developed method are presented. The promising results in this study show the potential of the developed method for evaluating both regional and global heart function from a single set of tMRI images, with associated reduction in scan time and patient discomfort.

Electric utility managers were surveyed to determine the factors that would influence their decisions in adopting new innovations to improve utility operations. The technological innovation considered was photovoltaics or solar cells. A path analysis revealed that the inadequacy of technical knowledge is the main precursor to adoption of photovoltaics by utility managers. Other factors include motivation, experience and familiarity.

Abstract

A study investigated the extent to which instructional films by themselves can teach a body of factual information. Three comparable groups of ninth-grade students were taught a course in general science. One group saw a series of 44 films and received no other instruction. The second group saw the films and studied specially prepared short study guides. The third group was taught by teachers using a standard textbook and customary teaching techniques, other than films. Test results showed that intermethod differences were small and generally not significant. The three methods were of almost equal effectiveness, where the learning of factual information was the sole criterion. (Author/JK)

PurposeThis paper aims to evaluate leadership diffusion in a federal agency within the context of organizational learning and culture change.Design/methodology/approachUsing an innovative 360 degree survey assessment method, the impact of the United States Geological Survey (USGS) Leadership Program (LP) was examined. A series of statistical tests was performed to analyze the role of familiarity and exposure in predicting leadership behavior and to compare the level of leadership behavior among co‐workers based on exposure to the LP.FindingsThe findings indicate that familiarity is a critical predictor of behavior change across all co‐worker subgroups. Increased exposure to the LP results in stronger, more consistent predictive models. Finally, co‐workers with higher exposure to the LP have increased levels of leadership behavior.Research limitations/implicationsThe results in the study suggest that, in order to promote leadership and organizational learning, familiarity with leadership skills is essential. Furthermore, the greater the familiarity with leadership through at‐work interaction, the more likely co‐workers are to learn and apply leadership techniques.Originality/valueThe study is especially unique and valuable due to the advanced 360 degree assessment which acts as a tool to measure the diffusion of leadership principles from LP participants to co‐workers, while also analyzing the role of participant interaction with co‐workers following their participation in a leadership class.

Abstract

Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging (tMRI) is considered to be the gold standard for quantitative assessment of the cardiac local functions. However, the tagging patterns and low myocardium-to-blood-pool contrast of tagged images bring great challenges to cardiac image processing and analysis tasks such as myocardium segmentation and tracking. Hence, there has been growing interest in techniques for removing tagging lines. In this work, a method for removing tagging patterns in tagged MR images using a coupled dictionary learning (CDL) model is proposed. In this model, identical sparse representations are assumed for image patches in the tagged MRI and corresponding cine MRI image spaces. First, we learn a dictionary for the tagged MRI image space. Then, we compute a dictionary for the cine MRI image space so that corresponding tagged and cine patches have the same sparse codes in terms of their respective dictionaries. Finally, in order to produce the de-tagged (cine version) of a test tagged image, the sparse codes of the tagged patches and the trained cine dictionary are used together to construct the de-tagged patches. We have tested this tag removal method on a dataset of tagged cardiac MR images. Our experimental results compared favorably with a recently proposed tag removal method that removes tags in the frequency domain using an optimal band-stop filter of harmonic peaks.

Background Global measures of heart function, e.g. LV mass (LVM) and ejection fraction (EF), are usually measured from cine CMR images. On the other hand, regional measures of myocardial contractility are obtained from tagged images. The acquisition of both datasets consumes most of the CMR exam duration. In this study, we present a method for estimating measures of global heart function from the tagged images after applying a series of mathematical operations to remove the taglines and enhance the myocardium-blood contrast.

Abstract

Tagged Magnetic Resonance Imaging (tMRI) is considered the gold standard for quantitative assessment of the cardiac regional function. However, quantification of the global function from tMRI is challenging due to the low contrast between myocardium and blood in these images, and hence, prevents the accurate segmentation of the myocardium. In this work, a method for enhancing the myocardium-to-blood contrast in tagged MR images is presented. First, the tag pattern in tMRI is removed by accurately suppressing the frequency components of the tag pattern to produce tagless images. Then, the image contrast is enhanced by estimating the local standard deviation and using it to suppress the blood signal intensity. The proposed method is applied on a dataset for 12 patients to calculate the global cardiac functional parameters. The results are then compared to those calculated from standard cine MRI image sequences of the same patients. The results show that the proposed method can be used to accurately estimate the left ventricular volume and mass.

Abstract

Electric utility managers are accustomed to technology choices, both in day-to-day load dispatching decisions and in the selection of new innovations to support utility operations. Conventional innovation management decision models may no longer apply in a confusing world of resource scarcity and industry deregulation. This research addresses the implications of a likely scenario: utilities will inevitably shift to a renewable base for electricity generation. How will managers become interested in solar energy? Does the conventional adoption decision model provide a solid foundation for understanding the factors that influence their interest? This study suggests not. Building on a national survey of utility managers in the US, a path analysis demonstrates the inadequacy of technical knowledge as a sufficient precursor to adoption interest. Three additional variables—motivation, experience, and familiarity—are offered as critical influences of interest in photovoltaics, the most ready innovation in the spectrum of renewable technologies. These findings have significant implications for commercialization efforts, as well as for management of utility operations. Through small wins, experimentation, and groping along, solar power can be diffused far more effectively and with far greater ultimate success than is expected through the conventional wisdom of large-scale research and development.

Abstract

Conventional views of the innovation adoption process promote knowledge, and technical knowledge in particular, as a key precursor to generating interest among potential adopters. “The more you know, the better” serves as a generic rule of thumb. In commercializing photovoltaics (PVs) in the utility sector, this approach deserves serious questioning. This research provides a parallel study of utility adopters of PVs (N=65) and non-adopters (N=317) to demonstrate how different the two groups are. The statistical analysis demonstrates strong support for the hypothesis that familiarity is a critical link in predicting interest toward photovoltaics for the non-adopter group, while technical knowledge figures much more prominently for the adopters. Photovoltaics have been heralded widely as the future of electricity generation, and commercialization efforts to date have over-emphasized factors that affect early adopters while ignoring softer influences that may incite non-adopters to invest. By invoking programs that promote small scale experiments and risk reduction by following the lead of other successful trials, the chances of long term success are much improved.

This paper describes a rigorous undergraduate course on environmental dispute resolution. Students get hands-on experience in negotiation cases, developing skills and building theoretical understanding through a series of exercises. With this foundation, the students advance to an extended role-playing case study on oil exploration in the Ecuadorian rain forest. The course provides an integration function both in terms of understanding environmental issues, but also in modeling reality, encouraging action, and building process tools that are essential in addressing environmental and social challenges facing the planet.

Abstract

Background Multi-element interventions for first-episode psychosis (FEP) are promising, but have mostly been conducted in non-epidemiologically representative samples, thereby raising the risk of underestimating the complexities involved in treating FEP in ‘real-world’ services. Methods/Design The Psychosis early Intervention and Assessment of Needs and Outcome (PIANO) trial is part of a larger research program (Genetics, Endophenotypes and Treatment: Understanding early Psychosis - GET UP) which aims to compare, at 9 months, the effectiveness of a multi-component psychosocial intervention versus treatment as usual (TAU) in a large epidemiologically based cohort of patients with FEP and their family members recruited from all public community mental health centers (CMHCs) located in two entire regions of Italy (Veneto and Emilia Romagna), and in the cities of Florence, Milan and Bolzano. The GET UP PIANO trial has a pragmatic cluster randomized controlled design. The randomized units (clusters) are the CMHCs, and the units of observation are the centers’ patients and their family members. Patients in the experimental group will receive TAU plus: 1) cognitive behavioral therapy sessions, 2) psycho-educational sessions for family members, and 3) case management. Patient enrolment will take place over a 1-year period. Several psychopathological, psychological, functioning, and service use variables will be assessed at baseline and follow-up. The primary outcomes are: 1) change from baseline to follow-up in positive and negative symptoms’ severity and subjective appraisal; 2) relapse occurrences between baseline and follow-up, that is, episodes resulting in admission and/or any case-note records of re-emergence of positive psychotic symptoms. The expected number of recruited patients is about 400, and that of relatives about 300. Owing to the implementation of the intervention at the CMHC level, the blinding of patients, clinicians, and raters is not possible, but every effort will be made to preserve the independency of the raters. We expect that this study will generate evidence on the best treatments for FEP, and will identify barriers that may hinder its feasibility in ‘real-world’ clinical settings, patient/family conditions that may render this intervention ineffective or inappropriate, and clinical, psychological, environmental, and service organization predictors of treatment effectiveness, compliance, and service satisfaction. 46. Acupuncture prophylaxis of cancer chemotherapy-induced sickness.

Abstract

In a multi-facet study we evaluated the efficacy of P6 electroacupuncture (10 Hz applied for 5 min) as an antiemetic in patients receiving a variety of cancer chemotherapy drugs. The study involved 130 (15 in an open pilot study, 10 in a randomized placebo controlled crossover study and 105 in a definitive study) patients who had a history of distressing sickness after previous treatment, and who, on the basis of a previous survey, would be expected to have a 96% chance of this with subsequent therapy. Sickness was either completely absent or reduced considerably in 97% of patients and no side effects were encountered. The limited crossover study, using a 'dummy' acupuncture (ACP) point showed that the beneficial effects were limited to the P6 point. Logistic and ethical considerations excluded the possibility of carrying out a larger placebo-controlled study.
