Abstract Background Enteric infections are hypothesized to be associated with intussusception in children. A small increase in intussusception following rotavirus vaccination has been seen in some settings. We conducted post-marketing surveillance for intussusception following rotavirus vaccine, Rotavac introduction in India and evaluated association of intussusception with enteric pathogens. Methods In a case-control study nested within a large sentinel hospital-based surveillance program in India, stool samples from 272 children aged less than 2 years admitted for intussusception and 272 age-, gender- and location-matched controls were evaluated with Taqman array card based molecular assays to detect enteric viruses, bacterial enteropathogens and parasites. Matched case-control analysis with conditional logistic regression evaluated association of enteropathogens with intussusception. Population attributable fractions (PAF) were calculated for enteropathogens significantly associated with intussusception. Results The most prevalent enteropathogens in cases and controls were enteroaggregative Escherichia coli, adenovirus 40/41, adenovirus C serotypes and enteroviruses. Children with intussusception were more likely to harbor adenovirus C serotypes (adjusted odds-ratio (aOR) = 1.74; 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.06–2.87) and enteroviruses (aOR = 1.77; 95% CI 1.05–2.97) than controls. Rotavirus was not associated with increased intussusception risk. Adenovirus C (PAF = 16.9%; 95% CI 4.7% − 27.6%) and enteroviruses (PAF = 14.7%; 95% CI 4.2% − 24.1%) had the highest population attributable fraction for intussusception. Conclusion Adenovirus C serotypes and enteroviruses were significantly associated with intussusception in Indian children. Rotavirus was not associated with risk of intussusception.

Fracture blisters are a relatively uncommon complication of fractures in locations of the body, such as the ankle, wrist elbow and foot, where skin adheres tightly to bone with little subcutaneous fat cushioning. The blister that results resembles that of a second degree burn.These blisters significantly alter treatment, making it difficult to splint or cast and often overlying ideal surgical incision sites. Review of the literature reveals no consensus on management; however, most authors agree on early treatment prior to blister formation or delay until blister resolution before attempting surgical correction or stabilization. Introduction: Polyetheretherketone, also known as PEEK, is a semicrystalline thermoplastic material with many advantages. Since its grey material, it has to veneering with composite resin to enhance its aesthetic appeal. Bonding PEEK and composite veneers poses challenges due to its inert surface. Aim: To assess and compare the Shear Bond Strength (SBS) between various polyetheretherketone materials and veneering composites following various surface treatments. Materials and Methods: The in-vitro study was conducted at KSR Dental College and Hospital in Tiruchengode, Tamil Nadu, India, over a period of three months from December 2022 to February 2023. A total of 108 PEEK discs were prepared for the study, divided into three groups: unfilled PEEK, 30% carbon reinforced PEEK, and 10% carbon + 10% graphite + 10% Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) reinforced PEEK. The specimens underwent different surface treatments, including no treatment, sandblasting with 110 um alumina particles, and acid etching with 98% sulphuric acid. Additionally, 108 composite discs were prepared and bonded to the PEEK specimens using adhesive and resin cement. The bonded specimens were immersed in distilled water for 24 hours, and the Shear Bond Strength (SBS) was determined using a universal testing machine. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA, and mean values were compared using posthoc tests. BackgroundThe impact of the 2017 American College of Cardiology (ACC)/American Heart Association (AHA) guidelines for diagnosis and management of hypertension on the prevalence of hypertension in India is unknown.MethodsWe analyzed data from the Cardiac Prevent 2015 survey to estimate the change in the prevalence of hypertension. The JNC8 guidelines defined hypertension as a systolic blood pressure of ≥140 ​mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 ​mmHg. The 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines define hypertension as a systolic blood pressure of ≥130 ​mmHg or diastolic blood pressure of ≥80 ​mmHg. We standardized the prevalence as per the 2011 census population of India. We also calculated the prevalence as per the World Health Organization (WHO) World Standard Population (2000-2025).ResultsAmong 180,335 participants (33.2% women), the mean age was 40.6 ​± ​14.9 years (41.1 ​± ​15.0 and 39.7 ​± ​14.7 years in men and women, respectively). Among them, 8,898 (4.9%), 99,791 (55.3%), 35,694 (11.9%), 23,084 (12.8%), 9,989 (5.5%) and 2,878 (1.6%) participants belonged to age group 18-19, 20-44, 45-54, 55-64, 65-74 and ​≥ ​75 years respectively. The prevalence of hypertension according to the JNC8 and 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines was 29.7% and 63.8%, respectively- an increase of 115%. With the 2011 census population of India, this suggests that currently, 486 million Indian adults have hypertension according to the 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines, an addition of 260 million as compared to the JNC8 guidelines.ConclusionAccording to the 2017 ACC/AHA guidelines, 3 in every 5 Indian adults have hypertension.

Background: External ventricular drain (EVD)-related infection (ERI) is a common complication in cranial neurosurgery practice with high mortality. The risk factors associated with ERI are not well studied in low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) like India. Identifying the risk variables is a necessity to design robust evidence-based care bundles for ERI prevention. Materials and methods: This is a single-center prospective cohort study. Patients with and without ERI during the 2-year study period were analyzed along with literature review to identify the risk variables associated with ERI. The Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) comprehensive flowchart was used to develop the concept care bundle for ERI prevention. Results: A total of 211 EVD were inserted during the study period. 15 ERI (7.1%) were identified based on IDSA criteria, with an average infection rate of 11.12 per 1000 EVD days. Gram negative bacteria (GNB) were the predominant pathogen (12/15, 80%), with Klebsiella pneumoniae (6/15, 40%) being the most common bacteria isolated. In multivariate analysis, the risk variables associated with ERI were use of broad spectrum pre-surgical antimicrobial prophylaxis for long duration, choice of posterior craniometric points for EVD insertion, EVD duration >7 days, EVD leak and surveillance cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) sampling at periodic intervals. Based on the risk variables identified in this study and literature review, a consensus decision on the care elements for the insertion and maintenance phases was chosen for the concept care bundle for ERI prevention. Conclusion: An evidence-based concept care bundle for ERI prevention is proposed for further multicentric evaluation and validation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
