The usage of tris(2-aminoethyl)amine-functionalized Fe3O4 nanoparticles as a novel magnetic sorbent for rapid extraction, preconcentration, and determination of trace amounts of silver and gold ions was investigated. The optimum conditions for sample pH, eluent parameters (type, concentration and volume) were obtained. The effect of various cationic interferences on the adsorption of silver and gold was evaluated. The analytical efficiency values of both silver and gold ions were higher than 98.0% in the optimum conditions. The limits of detection (LOD) were less than 0.8 and 0.5 ng ml-1 for silver and gold, respectively. The linear ranges for silver and gold were 1.5-1000 ng ml-1 and 1.0-1000 ng ml-1 respectively. The maximum capacity of the modified magnetic nanoparticles was more than 97.3 mg g-1 and 167 mg g-1 for silver, and gold ions, respectively. A carbon paste electrode was modified by dipyridile amine functionalized multiwalled carbon nanotubes for determination of trace amounts of lead(II) ions. The electrode composition was graphite powder 70%, paraffin 23%, and dipyridile amine modified MWCNTs 7% (W/W). The linear range for lead(II) was 9.5 x 10-8 to 2.5 x 10-3 mol L-1, and the limit of detection was obtained 7.0 x 10-8 mol L-1. The lifetime of the electrode was ten weeks, and a fast response time was observed. In this work, MCM-41 (Mobil Composition of Matter number 41) nanoporous silica has been synthesized and characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and IR spectroscopy. In the next step, poly-thiophene was coated on the nanoporous silica in order to increase its surface area. This composite was characterized by X-Ray powder diffraction, High resolution transmission electronic microscopy micrograph (HRTEM), elemental analysis (CHNS) and Thermal analysis (TG/DTA). The application of this composite was investigated in mercury ions removal from waste water prior to determination by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES). A carbon paste electrode for determination of mercury (II) ions in real samples was prepared. The main objective of the present study was to evaluate the concentration of mercury ions in different soil, water, plant, and animal muscle samples by utilizing modified carbon paste electrode. Functionalized nanoporous MCM-48 and multi-walled carbon nanotubes material were used in order to increase the efficiency and selectivity of the electrode for mercury ions determination. The electrode composition material was optimized as graphite powder 57%, Paraffin 22%, modified MCM-48 16% and MWCNTs 5% (W/W). The linear range of the electrode was calculated 5.0×10-8 to 1.0×10-3 mol L-1, and a detection limit was obtained 1.5×10-8 mol L-1. The potential slope was achieved 29.7±1.0 mV, and lifetime for the electrode was investigated about 5 months. A simple and sensitive solid phase extraction utilizing 9-acridinylamine functionalized alumina nanoparticles was developed, and their potential use for preconcentration and subsequent determination of gold by flame atomic absorption spectrometry (FAAS) was investigated. A number of parameters, namely, type, concentration, and volume of eluent, pH of the sample solution, flow rate of extraction, and volume of the sample, were evaluated. The effect of a variety of ions on preconcentration and recovery was also investigated. Gold ions were found to be recovered quantitatively at pH 3.0, with 0.1 mol L-1 thiourea in 2 mol L-1 H2SO4 as eluent. The limit of detection (LOD), defined as five times the standard deviation of the blank, was determined to be lower than 13.0 ppb. Under optimum conditions, the accuracy and precision (RSD%) of the method were >98.0 and <1.5%, respectively. To gauge its ability in terms of application to real samples, the proposed method was successfully applied for determination of gold concentration in waste water samples and one soil standard material, and satisfactory results were obtained.
