As disorder strength increases in quantum many-body systems a new phase of matter, the so-called anybody localization, emerges across the whole spectrum. This transition is energy dependent, a phenomenon known as mobility edge, such that the mid-spectrum eigenstates tend to localize at larger values of disorder in comparison to eigenstates near the edges of the spectrum. Many-body localization becomes more sophisticated in long-range interacting systems. Here, by focusing on several quantities, we draw the phase diagram as a function of disorder strength and energy spectrum, for a various range of interactions. Regardless of the underlying transition type, either second-order or Kosterlitz-Thouless, our analysis consistently determines the mobility edge, i.e. the phase boundary across the spectrum. We show that long-range interaction enhances the localization effect and shifts the phase boundary towards smaller values of disorder. In addition, we establish a hierarchy among the studied quantities concerning their corresponding transition boundary and critical exponents. Interestingly, we show that deliberately discarding some information of the system can mitigate finite-size effects and provide results in line with the analytical predictions at the thermodynamic limit., Comment: 10 pages, 6 Figures

Second order quantum phase transitions, with well-known features such as long-range entanglement, symmetry breaking, and gap closing, exhibit quantum enhancement for sensing at criticality. However, it is unclear which of these features are responsible for this enhancement. To address this issue, we investigate phase transitions in free-fermionic topological systems that exhibit neither symmetry-breaking nor long-range entanglement. We analytically demonstrate that quantum enhanced sensing is possible using topological edge states near the phase boundary. Remarkably, such enhancement also endures for ground states of such models that are accessible in solid state experiments. We illustrate the results with 1D Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chain and a 2D Chern insulator which are both experimentally accessible. While neither symmetry-breaking nor long-range entanglement are essential, gap closing remains as the major candidate for the ultimate source of quantum enhanced sensing. In addition, we also provide a fixed and simple measurement strategy that achieves near-optimal precision for sensing using generic edge states irrespective of the parameter value. The fate of many-body localization in long-range interacting systems is not fully settled. For instance, the phase boundary between ergodic and many-body localized regimes is still under debate. Here, we use Floquet dynamics which can induce many-body localization in a clean long-range interacting system through spatiotemporal disorder, which are realized by regular operation of random local rotations. The phase diagram has been determined for two types of uniform and nonuniform long-range couplings. Our Floquet mechanism shows more localizing power than conventional static disorder methods as it pushes the phase boundary in favor of the localized phase. Variational quantum algorithms (VQAs) are promising methods to demonstrate quantum advantage on near-term devices as the required resources are divided between a quantum simulator and a classical optimizer. As such, designing a VQA which is resource-efficient and robust against noise is a key factor to achieve potential advantage with the existing noisy quantum simulators. It turns out that a fixed VQA circuit design, such as the widely-used hardware efficient ansatz, is not necessarily robust against imperfections. In this work, we propose a genome-length-adjustable evolutionary algorithm to design a robust VQA circuit that is optimized over variations of both circuit ansatz and gate parameters, without any prior assumptions on circuit structure or depth. Remarkably, our method not only generates a noise-effect-minimized circuit with shallow depth, but also accelerates the classical optimization by substantially reducing the number of parameters. In this regard, the optimized circuit is far more resource-efficient with respect to both quantum and classical resources. As applications, based on two typical error models in VQA, we apply our method to calculate the ground energy of the hydrogen and the water molecules as well as the Heisenberg model. Simulations suggest that compared with conventional hardware efficient ansatz, our circuit-structure-tunable method can generate circuits apparently more robust against both coherent and incoherent noise, and hence is more likely to be implemented on near-term devices., Comment: 12 pages, 10 figures

Current quantum simulators suffer from multiple limitations such as short coherence time, noisy operations, faulty readout and restricted qubit connectivity in some platforms. Variational quantum algorithms are the most promising approach in near-term quantum simulation to achieve practical quantum advantage over classical computers. Here, we explore variational quantum algorithms, with different levels of qubit connectivity, for digital simulation of the ground state of long-range interacting systems as well as generation of spin squeezed states. We find that as the interaction becomes more long-ranged, the variational algorithms become less efficient, achieving lower fidelity and demanding more optimization iterations. In particular, when the system is near its criticality the efficiency is even lower. Increasing the connectivity between distant qubits improves the results, even with less quantum and classical resources. Our results show that by mixing circuit layers with different levels of connectivity one can sensibly improve the performance. Interestingly, the order of layers becomes very important and grouping the layers with long-distance connectivity at the beginning of the circuit outperforms other permutations. The Ground-state criticality of many-body systems is a resource for quantum-enhanced sensing, namely the Heisenberg precision limit, provided that one has access to the whole system. We show that for partial accessibility, the sensing capabilities of a block of spins in the ground state reduces to the sub-Heisenberg limit. To compensate for this, we drive the hamiltonian periodically and use a local steady-state for quantum sensing. Remarkably, the steady-state sensing shows a significant enhancement in precision compared to the ground state and even achieves super-Heisenberg scaling for low frequencies. The origin of this precision enhancement is related to the closing of the Floquet quasienergy gap. It is in close correspondence with the vanishing of the energy gap at criticality for ground state sensing with global accessibility. Quantum sensing is one of the key areas which exemplifies the superiority of quantum technologies. Nonetheless, most quantum sensing protocols operate efficiently only when the unknown parameters vary within a very narrow region, i.e., local sensing. Here, we provide a systematic formulation for quantifying the precision of a probe for multi-parameter global sensing when there is no prior information about the parameters. In many-body probes, in which extra tunable parameters exist, our protocol can tune the performance for harnessing the quantum criticality over arbitrarily large sensing intervals. For the single-parameter sensing, our protocol optimizes a control field such that an Ising probe is tuned to always operate around its criticality. This significantly enhances the performance of the probe even when the interval of interest is so large that the precision is bounded by the standard limit. For the multi-parameter case, our protocol optimizes the control fields such that the probe operates at the most efficient point along its critical line. Interestingly, for an Ising probe, it is predominantly determined by the longitudinal field. Finally, we show that even a simple magnetization measurement significantly benefits from our optimization and moderately delivers the theoretical precision., 4 pages + supplemental material, 5 figures

Transistors are key elements for enabling computational hardware in both classical and quantum domains. Here, we propose a voltage-gated spin transistor using itinerant electrons in the Hubbard model which acts at the level of single electron spins. Going beyond classical spintronics, it enables the controlling of the flow of quantum information between distant spin qubits. The transistor has two modes of operation, open and closed, which are realized by two different charge configurations in the gate of the transistor. In the closed mode, the spin information between source and drain is blocked while in the open mode we have free spin information exchange. The switching between the modes takes place within a fraction of the operation time which allows for several subsequent operations within the coherence time of the transistor. The system shows good resilience against several imperfections and opens up a practical application for quantum dot arrays., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

A key feature of the many-body localized phase is the breaking of ergodicity and consequently the emergence of local memory; revealed as the local preservation of information over time. As memory is necessarily a time dependent concept, it has been partially captured by a few extant studies of dynamical quantities. However, these quantities are neither optimal, nor democratic with respect to input state; and as such a fundamental and complete information theoretic understanding of local memory in the context of many-body localization remains elusive. We introduce the dynamical Holevo quantity as the true quantifier of local memory, outlining its advantages over other quantities such as the imbalance or entanglement entropy. We find clear scaling behavior in its steady-state across the many-body localization transition, and determine a family of two-parameter scaling ans\"atze which captures this behavior. One of the key applications for the emerging quantum simulators is to emulate the ground state of many-body systems, as it is of great interest in various fields from condensed matter physics to material science. Traditionally, in an analog sense, adiabatic evolution has been proposed to slowly evolve a simple Hamiltonian, initialized in its ground state, to the Hamiltonian of interest such that the final state becomes the desired ground state. Recently, variational methods have also been proposed and realized in quantum simulators for emulating the ground state of many-body systems. Here, we first provide a quantitative comparison between the adiabatic and variational methods with respect to required quantum resources on digital quantum simulators, namely the depth of the circuit and the number of two-qubit quantum gates. Our results show that the variational methods are less demanding with respect to these resources. However, they need to be hybridized with a classical optimization which can converge slowly. Therefore, as the second result of the paper, we provide two different approaches for speeding the convergence of the classical optimizer by taking a good initial guess for the parameters of the variational circuit. The time evolution of spin chains has been extensively studied for transferring quantum states between different registers of a quantum computer. Nonetheless, in most of these protocols only one pair of sender-receivers can share the channel at each time. This significantly limits the rate of communication in a network of many users as they can only communicate through their common data-bus sequentially and not all at the same time. Here, we propose a protocol in which multiple users can share a spin chain channel simultaneously without having crosstalk between different parties. This is achieved by properly tuning the local parameters of the Hamiltonian to mediate an effective interaction between each pair of users via a distinct set of energy eigenstates of the system. We introduce three strategies with different levels of Hamiltonian tuning, each might be suitable for a different physical platform. All the three strategies provide very high transmission fidelities with vanishingly small crosstalks. The study of quantum thermodynamics, i.e. equilibrium and non-equilibrium thermodynamics of quantum systems, has been applied to various many-body problems, including quantum phase transitions. An important question is whether out-of-equilibrium quantities from this emerging field, such as fluctuations of work, exhibit scaling after a sudden quench. In particular, it is very interesting to explore this problem in impurity models where the lack of an obvious symmetry breaking at criticality makes it very challenging to characterize. Here, by considering a spin emulation of the two impurity Kondo model and performing density matrix renormalization group computations, we establish that the irreversible work produced in a quench exhibits finite-size scaling at quantum criticality. Our approach predicts the equilibrium critical exponents for the crossover length and the order parameter of the model, and, moreover, implies a new exponent for the rescaled irreversible work.

The power of a quantum circuit is determined through the number of two-qubit entangling gates that can be performed within the coherence time of the system. In the absence of parallel quantum gate operations, this would make the quantum simulators limited to shallow circuits. Here, we propose a protocol to parallelize the implementation of two-qubit entangling gates between multiple users which are spatially separated, and use a commonly shared spin chain data-bus. Our protocol works through inducing effective interaction between each pair of qubits without disturbing the others, therefore, it increases the rate of gate operations without creating crosstalk. This is achieved by tuning the Hamiltonian parameters appropriately, described in the form of two different strategies. The tuning of the parameters makes different bilocalized eigenstates responsible for the realization of the entangling gates between different pairs of distant qubits. Remarkably, the performance of our protocol is robust against increasing the length of the data-bus and the number of users. Moreover, we show that this protocol can tolerate various types of disorders and is applicable in the context of superconductor-based systems. Quantum entanglement is nearly ubiquitous in equilibrium and non-equilibrium many-body states. Although it has been largely studied through the von Neumann entropy of a subsystem, which quantifies the entanglement between two complementary parts of a many-body system, this is not necessarily the only way. Here we review how some other measures can be fruitful in characterizing the entanglement content of many-body states. For example, we can look at the entangement between two individual spins through the concurrence or between two non-complementary, but in principle large, parts of a many-body system through the negativity. Alternatively, a quantity inspired through entanglement studies, but not itself a measure of entanglement, namely the Schmidt gap, can be effective as an order parameter for phase transitions in which only the entanglement structure of a many-body system changes. We exemplify using equilibrium states of short-range and impurity models and their quantum phase transitions.

Optomechanical systems are promising platforms for controlled light-matter interactions. They are capable of providing several fundamental and practical novel features when the mechanical oscillator is cooled down to nearly reach its ground state. In this framework, measuring the effective temperature of the oscillator is perhaps the most relevant step in the characterization of those systems. In conventional schemes, the cavity is driven strongly, and the overall system is well-described by a linear (Gaussian preserving) Hamiltonian. Here, we depart from this regime by considering an undriven optomechanical system via non-Gaussian radiation-pressure interaction. To measure the temperature of the mechanical oscillator, initially in a thermal state, we use light as a probe to coherently interact with it and create an entangled state. We show that the optical probe gets a nonlinear phase, resulting from the non-Gaussian interaction, and undergoes an incoherent phase diffusion process. To efficiently infer the temperature from the entangled light-matter state, we propose using a nonlinear Kerr medium before a homodyne detector. Remarkably, placing the Kerr medium enhances the precision to nearly saturate the ultimate quantum bound given by the quantum Fisher information. Furthermore, it also simplifies the thermometry procedure as it makes the choice of the homodyne local phase independent of the temperature, which avoids the need for adaptive sensing protocols., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures

Measurement is one of the key concepts which discriminates classical and quantum physics. Unlike classical systems, a measurement on a quantum system typically alters it drastically as a result of wave function collapse. Here we suggest that this feature can be exploited for inducing quench dynamics in a many-body system while leaving its Hamiltonian unchanged. Importantly, by doing away with dedicated macroscopic devices for inducing a quench -- using instead the indispensable measurement apparatus only -- the protocol is expected to be easier to implement and more resilient against decoherence. By way of various case studies, we show that our scheme also has decisive advantages beyond reducing decoherence -- for spectroscopy purposes and probing nonequilibrium scaling of critical and quantum impurity many-body systems., 6 pages, 5 figures

Many-body localization has become an important phenomenon for illuminating a potential rift between non-equilibrium quantum systems and statistical mechanics. However, the nature of the transition between ergodic and localized phases in models displaying many-body localization is not yet well understood. Assuming that this is a continuous transition, analytic results show that the length scale should diverge with a critical exponent $\nu \ge 2$ in one dimensional systems. Interestingly, this is in stark contrast with all exact numerical studies which find $\nu \sim 1$. We introduce the Schmidt gap, new in this context, which scales near the transition with a exponent $\nu > 2$ compatible with the analytical bound. We attribute this to an insensitivity to certain finite size fluctuations, which remain significant in other quantities at the sizes accessible to exact numerical methods. Additionally, we find that a physical manifestation of the diverging length scale is apparent in the entanglement length computed using the logarithmic negativity between disjoint blocks., Comment: 8 pages, 7 figures

Entanglement not only plays a crucial role in quantum technologies, but is key to our understanding of quantum correlations in many-body systems. However, in an experiment, the only way of measuring entanglement in a generic mixed state is through reconstructive quantum tomography, requiring an exponential number of measurements in the system size. Here, we propose a machine learning assisted scheme to measure the entanglement between arbitrary subsystems of size $N_A$ and $N_B$, with $\mathcal{O}(N_A + N_B)$ measurements, and without any prior knowledge of the state. The method exploits a neural network to learn the unknown, non-linear function relating certain measurable moments and the logarithmic negativity. We propose a general protocol for low-control refrigeration and thermometry of thermal qubits, which can be implemented using electronic spins in diamond. The refrigeration is implemented by a probe, consisting of a network of interacting spins. The protocol involves two operations: (i) free evolution of the probe; and (ii) a swap gate between one spin in the probe and the thermal qubit we wish to cool. We show that if the initial state of the probe falls within a suitable range, and the free evolution of the probe is both unital and conserves the excitation in the z direction, then the cooling protocol will always succeed, with an efficiency that depends on the rate of spin dephasing and the swap-gate fidelity. Furthermore, measuring the probe after it has cooled many qubits provides an estimate of their temperature. We provide a specific example where the probe is a Heisenberg spin chain, and suggest a physical implementation using electronic spins in diamond. Here, the probe is constituted of nitrogen vacancy (NV) centers, while the thermal qubits are dark spins. By using a novel pulse sequence, a chain of NV centers can be made to evolve according to a Heisenberg Hamiltonian. This proposal allows for a range of applications, such as NV-based nuclear magnetic resonance of photosensitive molecules kept in a dark spot on a sample, and it opens up possibilities for the study of quantum thermodynamics, environment-assisted sensing, and many-body physics. The emergence of a diverging length scale in many-body systems at a quantum phase transition implies that total entanglement has to reach its maximum there. In order to fully characterize this, one has to consider multipartite entanglement as, for instance, bipartite entanglement between individual particles fails to signal this effect. However, quantification of multipartite entanglement is very hard and detecting it may not be possible due to the lack of accessibility to all individual particles. For these reasons it will be more sensible to partition the system into relevant subsystems, each containing few to many spins, and study entanglement between those constituents as a coarse-grain picture of multipartite entanglement between individual particles. In impurity systems, famously exemplified by two-impurity and two-channel Kondo models, it is natural to divide the system into three parts, namely, impurities and the left and right bulks. By exploiting two tripartite entanglement measures, based on negativity, we show that at impurity quantum phase transitions the tripartite entanglement diverges and shows scaling behavior. While the critical exponents are different for each tripartite entanglement measure they both provide very similar critical exponents for the two-impurity and the two-channel Kondo models suggesting that they belong to the same universality class., Comment: 5 pages and 5 figures

Solid-state spin arrays are being engineered in varied systems, including gated coupled quantum dots and interacting dopants in semiconductor structures. Beyond quantum computation, these arrays are useful integrated analog simulators for many-body models. As entanglement between individual spins is extremely short ranged in these models, one has to measure the entanglement entropy of a block in order to truly verify their many-body entangled nature. Remarkably, the characteristic scaling of entanglement entropy, predicted by conformal field theory, has never been measured. Here we show that with as few as two replicas of a spin array, and capacitive double-dot singlet-triplet measurements on neighboring spin pairs, the above scaling of the entanglement entropy can be verified. This opens up the controlled simulation of quantum field theories, as we exemplify with uniform chains and Kondo-type impurity models, in engineered solid-state systems. A quantum phase transition is an unequivocal signature of strongly correlated many-body physics. Signatures of such phenomena are yet to be observed in ballistic transport through quantum wires. Recent developments in quantum wires have made it possible to enhance the interaction between the electrons. Here we show that hitherto unexplained anticrossing between conduction energy sub-bands, observed in such experiments, can be explained through a simple yet effective discretised model which undergoes a second order quantum phase transition within the Ising universality class. Accordingly, we observe how the charge distribution, transverse to the direction of the wire will vary across the phase transition. We show that data coming from three different samples with differing electron densities and gate voltages show a remarkable universal scaling behavior, determined by the relevant critical exponent, which is only possible near a quantum phase transition., 5 pages, 5 figures

The emerging field of quantum thermodynamics is contributing important results and insights into archetypal many-body problems, including quantum phase transitions. Still, the question whether out-of-equilibrium quantities, such as fluctuations of work, exhibit critical scaling after a sudden quench in a closed system has remained elusive. Here, we take a novel approach to the problem by studying a quench across an impurity quantum critical point. By performing density matrix renormalization group computations on the two-impurity Kondo model, we are able to establish that the irreversible work produced in a quench exhibits finite-size scaling at quantum criticality. We exploit the unique features of the entanglement in the gapless Kondo regime to show that a single local quench at one end of a Kondo spin chain may always induce fast and long lived oscillatory dynamics, which establishes a high quality entanglement between the individual spins at the opposite ends of the chain. This entanglement is a footprint of the presence of the Kondo cloud and may be engineered so as to attain — even for very large chains- a constant high value independent of the length; in addition, it is thermally robust. To better evidence the remarkable peculiarities of the Kondo regime, we carry a parallel analysis of the entanglement properties of the Kondo spin chain model in the gapped dimerised regime where these remarkable features are absent.

Two electronic channels competing to screen a single impurity spin, as in the two-channel Kondo model, are expected to generate a ground state with nontrivial entanglement structure. We exploit a spin-chain representation of the two-channel Kondo model to probe the ground-state block entropy, negativity, tangle, and Schmidt gap, using a density matrix renormalization group approach. In the presence of symmetric coupling to the two channels we confirm field-theory predictions for the boundary entropy difference, $\ln (g_{UV}/g_{IR})=\ln(2)/2$, between the ultraviolet and infrared limits and the leading $\ln(x)/x$ impurity correction to the block entropy. The impurity entanglement, $S_{\text{imp}}$, is shown to scale with the characteristic length $\xi_{2CK}$. We show that both the Schmidt gap and the entanglement of the impurity with one of the channels $-$ as measured by the negativity$-$ faithfully serve as order parameters for the impurity quantum phase transition appearing as a function of channel asymmetry, allowing for explicit determination of critical exponents, $\nu\!\approx\! 2$ and $\beta \!\approx\! 0.2$. Technological applications of many-body structures that emerge in gated devices under minimal control are largely unexplored. Here we show how emergent Wigner crystals in a semiconductor quantum wire can facilitate a pivotal requirement for a scalable quantum computer, namely transmitting quantum information encoded in spins faithfully over a distance of micrometers. The fidelity of the transmission is remarkably high, faster than the relevant decohering effects, independent of the details of the spatial charge configuration in the wire, and realizable in dilution refrigerator temperatures. The transfer can evidence near unitary many-body nonequilibrium dynamics hitherto unseen in a solid-state device.
