Semiconductors, featuring tunable electrical transport, and magnets, featuring tunable spin configurations, form the basis of many information technologies. A long-standing challenge has been to realize materials that integrate and connect these two distinct properties. Two-dimensional (2D) materials offer a platform to realize this concept, but known 2D magnetic semiconductors are electrically insulating in their magnetic phase. Here we demonstrate tunable electron transport within the magnetic phase of the 2D semiconductor CrSBr and reveal strong coupling between its magnetic order and charge transport. This provides an opportunity to characterize the layer-dependent magnetic order of CrSBr down to the monolayer via magnetotransport. Exploiting the sensitivity of magnetoresistance to magnetic order, we uncover a second regime characterized by coupling between charge carriers and magnetic defects. The magnetoresistance within this regime can be dynamically and reversibly tuned by varying the carrier concentration using an electrostatic gate, providing a mechanism for controlling charge transport in 2D magnets.

Achieving electrostatic control of quantum phases is at the frontier of condensed matter research. Recent investigations have revealed superconductivity tunable by electrostatic doping in twisted graphene heterostructures and in two-dimensional (2D) semimetals such as WTe$_2$. Some of these systems have a polar crystal structure that gives rise to ferroelectricity, in which the interlayer polarization exhibits bistability driven by external electric fields. Here we show that bilayer $T_d$-MoTe$_2$ simultaneously exhibits ferroelectric switching and superconductivity. Remarkably, a field-driven, first-order superconductor-to-normal transition is observed at its ferroelectric transition. Bilayer $T_d$-MoTe$_2$ also has a maximum in its superconducting transition temperature ($T_\textrm{c}$) as a function of carrier density and temperature, allowing independent control of the superconducting state as a function of both doping and polarization. We find that the maximum $T_\textrm{c}$ is concomitant with compensated electron and hole carrier densities and vanishes when one of the Fermi pockets disappears with doping. We argue that this unusual polarization-sensitive 2D superconductor is driven by an interband pairing interaction associated with nearly nested electron and hole Fermi pockets.

Dirac semimetals show nontrivial physical properties and can host exotic quantum states like Weyl semimetals and topological insulators under suitable external conditions. Here, by combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements (ARPES) and first-principle calculations, we demonstrate that Zintl-phase compound SmMg$_2$Bi$_2$ belongs to the close proximity to a topological Dirac semimetallic state. ARPES results show a Dirac-like band crossing at the zone-center near the Fermi level ($E_\mathrm {F}$) which is further confirmed by first-principle calculations. Theoretical studies also reveal that SmMg$_2$Bi$_2$ belongs to a $Z_2$ topological class and hosts spin-polarized states around the $E_\mathrm {F}$. Zintl's theory predicts that the valence state of Sm in this material should be Sm$^{2+}$, however we detect many Sm-4$f$ multiplet states (flat-bands) whose energy positions suggest the presence of both Sm$^{2+}$ and Sm$^{3+}$. It is also evident that these flat-bands and other dispersive states are strongly hybridized when they cross each other. Due to the presence of Sm$^{3+}$ ions, the temperature dependence of magnetic susceptibility $\chi(T)$ shows Curie-Weiss-like contribution in the low temperature region, in addition to the Van Vleck-like behaviour expected for the Sm$^{2+}$ ions. Achieving electrostatic control of quantum phases is at the frontier of condensed matter research. Recent investigations have revealed superconductivity tunable by electrostatic doping in twisted graphene heterostructures and in two-dimensional semimetals such as WTe

Magic-angle twisted trilayer graphene (TTG) has recently emerged as a platform to engineer strongly correlated flat bands. We reveal the normal-state structural and electronic properties of TTG using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at twist angles for which superconductivity has been observed. Real trilayer samples undergo a strong reconstruction of the moiré lattice, which locks layers into near–magic-angle, mirror symmetric domains comparable in size with the superconducting coherence length. This relaxation introduces an array of localized twist-angle faults, termed twistons and moiré solitons, whose electronic structure deviates strongly from the background regions, leading to a doping-dependent, spatially granular electronic landscape. The Fermi-level density of states is maximally uniform at dopings for which superconductivity has been observed in transport measurements.

The ability to create nanometer-scale lateral p-n junctions is essential for the next generation of two-dimensional (2D) devices. Using the charge-transfer heterostructure graphene/α-RuCl

Graphene moiré superlattices display electronic flat bands. At integer fillings of these flat bands, energy gaps due to strong electron–electron interactions are generally observed. However, the presence of other correlation-driven phases in twisted graphitic systems at non-integer fillings is unclear. Here, we report the existence of three-fold rotational (C3) symmetry breaking in twisted double bilayer graphene. Using spectroscopic imaging over large and uniform areas to characterize the direction and degree of C3 symmetry breaking, we find it to be prominent only at energies corresponding to the flat bands and nearly absent in the remote bands. We demonstrate that the magnitude of the rotational symmetry breaking does not depend on the degree of the heterostrain or the displacement field, being instead a manifestation of an interaction-driven electronic nematic phase. We show that the nematic phase is a primary order that arises from the normal metal state over a wide range of doping away from charge neutrality. The optical properties of transition metal dichalcogenides have previously been modified at the nanoscale by using mechanical and electrical nanostructuring. However, a clear experimental picture relating the local electronic structure with emission properties in such structures has so far been lacking. Here, we use a combination of scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and near-field photoluminescence (nano-PL) to probe the electronic and optical properties of single nano-bubbles in bilayer heterostructures of WSe2 on MoSe2. We show from tunneling spectroscopy that there are electronic states deeply localized in the gap at the edge of such bubbles, which are independent of the presence of chemical defects in the layers. We also show a significant change in the local bandgap on the bubble, with a continuous evolution to the edge of the bubble over a length scale of ~20 nm. Nano-PL measurements observe a continuous redshift of the interlayer exciton on entering the bubble, in agreement with the band to band transitions measured by STM. We use self-consistent Schr\"odinger-Poisson (SP) simulations to capture the essence of the experimental results and find that strong doping in the bubble region is a key ingredient to achieving the observed localized states, together with mechanical strain.

The ability to perform nanometer-scale optical imaging and spectroscopy is key to deciphering the low-energy effects in quantum materials, as well as vibrational fingerprints in planetary and extraterrestrial particles, catalytic substances, and aqueous biological samples. These tasks can be accomplished by the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy (s-SNOM) technique that has recently spread to many research fields and enabled notable discoveries. Herein, it is shown that the s-SNOM, together with scanning probe research in general, can benefit in many ways from artificial-intelligence (AI) and machine-learning (ML) algorithms. Augmented with AI- and ML-enhanced data acquisition and analysis, scanning probe optical nanoscopy is poised to become more efficient, accurate, and intelligent.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials can host stable, long-range magnetic phases in the presence of underlying magnetic anisotropy. The ability to realize the full potential of 2D magnets necessitates systematic investigation of the role of individual atomic layers and nanoscale inhomogeneity ($\textit{i.e.}$, strain) on the emergence and stability of both intra- and interlayer magnetic phases. Here, we report multifaceted spatial-dependent magnetism in few-layer CrSBr using magnetic force microscopy (MFM) and Monte Carlo-based magnetic simulations. We perform nanoscale visualization of the magnetic sheet susceptibility from raw MFM data and force-distance curves, revealing a characteristic onset of both intra- and interlayer magnetic correlations as a function of temperature and layer-thickness. We demonstrate that the presence of a single uncompensated layer in odd-layer terraces significantly reduces the stability of the low-temperature antiferromagnetic (AFM) phase and gives rise to multiple coexisting magnetic ground states at temperatures close to the bulk N\'eel temperature ($\textit{T}$$_N$). Furthermore, the AFM phase can be reliably suppressed using modest fields (~300 Oe) from the MFM probe, behaving as a nanoscale magnetic switch. Our prototypical study of few-layer CrSBr demonstrates the critical role of layer parity on field-tunable 2D magnetism and provides vital design criteria for future nanoscale magnetic devices. Two-dimensional semiconductors, including transition metal dichalcogenides, are of interest in electronics and photonics but remain nonmagnetic in their intrinsic form. Previous efforts to form two-dimensional dilute magnetic semiconductors utilized extrinsic doping techniques or bulk crystal growth, detrimentally affecting uniformity, scalability, or Curie temperature. Here, we demonstrate an in situ substitutional doping of Fe atoms into MoS2 monolayers in the chemical vapor deposition growth. The iron atoms substitute molybdenum sites in MoS2 crystals, as confirmed by transmission electron microscopy and Raman signatures. We uncover an Fe-related spectral transition of Fe:MoS2 monolayers that appears at 2.28 eV above the pristine bandgap and displays pronounced ferromagnetic hysteresis. The microscopic origin is further corroborated by density functional theory calculations of dipole-allowed transitions in Fe:MoS2. Using spatially integrating magnetization measurements and spatially resolving nitrogen-vacancy center magnetometry, we show that Fe:MoS2 monolayers remain magnetized even at ambient conditions, manifesting ferromagnetism at room temperature., Ferromagnetism with a Curie temperature above room temperature in 2D materials is highly desirable for practical spintronics applications. Here, the authors demonstrate such phenomenon in monolayer MoS2 via in situ iron-doping and measured local magnetic field strength up to 0.5 ± 0.1 mT.

High-temperature cuprate superconductors exhibit extremely local nanoscale phenomena and strong sensitivity to doping. While other experiments have looked at nanoscale interfaces between layers of different dopings, we focus on the interplay between naturally inhomogeneous nanoscale regions. Using scanning tunneling microscopy to carefully track the same region of the sample as a function of temperature, we show that regions with weak superconductivity can persist to elevated temperatures if bordered by regions of strong superconductivity. This suggests that it may be possible to increase the maximum possible transition temperature by controlling the distribution of dopants.

Identifying the mechanism of superconductivity in the high-temperature cuprate superconductors is one of the major outstanding problems in physics. We report local measurements of the onset of superconducting pairing in the high-transition temperature (Tc) superconductor Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+delta using a lattice-tracking spectroscopy technique with a scanning tunneling microscope. We can determine the temperature dependence of the pairing energy gaps, the electronic excitations in the absence of pairing, and the effect of the local coupling of electrons to bosonic excitations. Our measurements reveal that the strength of pairing is determined by the unusual electronic excitations of the normal state, suggesting that strong electron-electron interactions rather than low-energy (0.1 volts) electron-boson interactions are responsible for superconductivity in the cuprates.
