Abstract

Static and mobile radiation detectors can be deployed in urban environments for a range of nuclear security applications, including radiological source search-and-tracking scenarios. Modeling detector performance for such applications is challenging, as it does not depend solely on the detector capabilities themselves. Many factors must be taken into consideration, including specific source and background signatures, the topology and constraints of the deployment environment, the presence of nuisance sources, and whether detectors are mobile or static. When considering the simultaneous deployment of multiple, heterogeneous detectors, assessment of the system-wide performance requires the simulation of the individual detectors, and a system-level analysis of the detection performance. In radiological source search-and-tracking scenarios, performance is mostly dominated by the probability of encounter, which depends on the specifics of a given deployment, e.g., static vs. mobile detectors or a combination of both modalities, the number of detectors deployed, the dynamic vs. static setting of false alarm rates, and individual vs. networked operation. The Urban Deployment Model (UDM) toolset was specifically developed to cover the gap in the available generic frameworks for the simulation of radiation detector deployments at city scales. UDM provides a unified and modular framework to support the simulation and performance characterization of heterogeneous detector deployments in urban environments. This paper presents the key components along the UDM workflow.

Abstract

Neutrinoless double beta decay searches play a major role in determining neutrino properties, in particular the Majorana or Dirac nature of the neutrino and the absolute scale of the neutrino mass. The consequences of these searches go beyond neutrino physics, with implications for Grand Unification and leptogenesis. The \textsc{Majorana} Collaboration is assembling a low-background array of high purity Germanium (HPGe) detectors to search for neutrinoless double-beta decay in $^{76}$Ge. The \textsc{Majorana Demonstrator}, which is currently being constructed and commissioned at the Sanford Underground Research Facility in Lead, South Dakota, will contain 44 kg (30 kg enriched in $^{76}$Ge) of HPGe detectors. Its primary goal is to demonstrate the scalability and background required for a tonne-scale Ge experiment. This is accomplished via a modular design and projected background of less than 3 cnts/tonne-yr in the region of interest. 3. The NA61/SHINE long target pilot analysis for T2K

Abstract

The NA61/SHINE collaboration performed measurements of pC interactions at 31 GeV/c beam momentum with a full size replica of the T2K target (1.9 interaction length) during a pilot run in 2007. Larger statistics runs were also conducted in 2009 and 2010. The NA61/SHINE setup consists in a large acceptance spectrometer located on the H2 beamline of the SPS at CERN. For the first time, the kinematical phase space of interest for an accelerator based neutrino experiment (i.e. kinematical phase space of pions/kaons exiting the target and producing neutrinos in the direction of the near and far detectors) is fully covered by a single hadron production experiment. In a first stage, yields of positively charged pions were measured at the surface of the target. The analysis of the 2007 data set presented here demonstrates that a) high quality long target data were successfully taken with the NA61/SHINE apparatus, and b) for the first time, the T2K neutrino flux predictions can effectively be re-weighted with the NA61/SHINE long target data.

4. NA61-SHINE: Hadron Production Measurements for Cosmic Ray and Neutrino Experiments

Abstract

As neutrino long baseline experiments enter a new domain of precision, important systematic errors due to poor knowledge of production cross-sections for pions and kaons require more dedicated measurements for precise neutrino flux predictions. The cosmic ray experiments require dedicated hadron production measurements to tune simulation models used to describe air shower profiles. Among other goals, the NA61-SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) experiment at the CERN SPS aims at precision measurements (5% and below) for both neutrino and cosmic ray experiments: those will improve the prediction of the neutrino flux for the T2K experiment at J-PARC and the prediction of muon production in the propagation of air showers for the Auger and KASCADE experiments. Motivations for new hadron production measurements are briefly discussed. NA61-SHINE took data during a pilot run in 2007 and in 2009 with different Carbon targets. The NA61-SHINE setup and preliminary spectra for positive and negative pions obtained with the 2007 thin (4% interaction length) Carbon target data are presented. Abstract

NA61/SHINE (SPS Heavy Ion and Neutrino Experiment) is a multi-purpose experimental facility to study hadron production in hadron-proton, hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. It recorded the first physics data with hadron beams in 2009 and with ion beams (secondary 7Be beams) in 2011. NA61/SHINE has greatly profited from the long development of the CERN proton and ion sources and the accelerator chain as well as the H2 beamline of the CERN North Area. The latter has recently been modified to also serve as a fragment separator as needed to produce the Be beams for NA61/SHINE. Numerous components of the NA61/SHINE set-up were inherited from its predecessors, in particular, the last one, the NA49 experiment. Important new detectors and upgrades of the legacy equipment were introduced by the NA61/SHINE Collaboration. Abstract

We present experimental results on inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of negatively charged pions produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/ c ( s√= 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively). The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN super proton synchrotron. Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and their collision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+p interactions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion program devoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required for interpretation of results on nucleus–nucleus and proton–nucleus collisions.

8. Constraining neutrino flux predictions with hadron production data: the NA61/SHINE measurements for the T2K experiment

Abstract

From hypothetical particles in the 30s, neutrinos have turned into the first hint for new physics beyond the Standard Model in the late 90s. The observation of a new phenomenon, referred to as neutrino oscillations, in which a neutrino of a given flavor transforms into a neutrino of another flavor after traveling over a sufficiently long distance, actually revealed properties of the leptonic sector of the Standard Model that were not described so far: neutrinos have mass, leptons mix, and consequently, there might be CP violation in the leptonic sector. The T2K experiment at Tokai, Japan, will allow us to probe neutrino oscillations with an unprecedented precision on the oscillation parameters in the three-neutrino model. The experiment is designed to perform a precise measurement of the numb to nue oscillation driven by the atmospheric mass squared splitting |∆ m^2_{23}| and the so far unknown mixing angle theta_{13}. To achieve a sensitivity down to sin^2(2 theta_{13})=0.006 at 90% CL and a precision of delta(∆m^2_{23})=10^{-4} eV^2, the T2K experiment needs a high intensity neutrino beam and a precise prediction of neutrino fluxes. The first point is achieved by using a high intensity proton beam on target with a design beam power of 0.75 MW, the second point by tuning the original predictions of the T2K beam simulation with hadron production data measured by the NA61/SHINE collaboration at the CERN SPS. The latter performed measurements of p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c beam momentum on both a thin (4% of the interaction length) target and a full-size (1.9 interaction length) replica of the T2K production target. The current neutrino flux predictions in T2K are based on the usual approach, which consists in tuning the particle multiplicities of the simulated primary interactions with inclusive hadron production cross section measurements. The goal of this thesis is to develop a complementary approach in which the tuning of the flux predictions is done at the level of both primary and secondary interactions by using long target measurements. Such a tuning would actually constrain a larger fraction of the neutrino flux, with a potentially better control of systematic uncertainties. The first chapter of this thesis is an overall introduction to neutrino physics and to the phenomenology of neutrino oscillations. The original beam simulation of the T2K experiment and corresponding flux predictions from different sources are presented in Chapter 2, together with modifications implemented in order to express the flux predictions in terms of hadron production measurements off thin and long targets. These studies stressed the importance of the long target measurements to constrain neutrino flux predictions. The first part of Chapter 3 is dedicated to the estimation of the statistics of the NA61/SHINE long target measurements based on the T2K physics requirements. The second part of the chapter presents the analysis of the NA61/SHINE 2007 long target data, which provides a direct comparison of the total pi+ production simulated by the T2K hadron production model to the measured production over the full-size replica of the T2K target. In Chapter 4, a first method is proposed to use the NA61/SHINE long target data within the T2K beam simulation and re-weight the neutrino flux predictions accordingly. Finally, the recent results of the T2K nue appearance analysis are reported in Chapter 5, in particular, the usage of the NA61/SHINE thin target data for the neutrino flux predictions.

Abstract

The development of a Gas Electron Multiplier (GEM) readout as an option for the TPC of the near detector of the T2K neutrino experiment is presented. The low track density and the wide range in polar angle of particles produced by neutrino interactions drive the initial choice of relatively large squared pads (8 mm) for the performance study. The physics requirements [T2K ND280 Conceptual Design Report, http://dpnc.unige.ch:8080/nu/Members/nabgrall/t2kge/t2kge_doc/cdr.pdf] are a momentum resolution better than 10 % at 1 GeV/c and a 3σ dE/dx separation between muons and electrons. Micro-pattern Gas Detectors (MPGDs) such as GEMs or Micromegas show several beneficial features compared to the traditional Multi-Wire Proportional Chambers. They have been tested in the HARP TPC environment at CERN. Preliminary results form the GEM tests are reported here.

Abstract

The NA61-SHINE experiment at CERN will accurately measure the hadroproduction from interactions of 30–50 GeV proton beams on a carbon target. The precise knowledge of the inclusive spectra of pions and kaons off the target will allow the absolute determination of the neutrino flux of the T2K long baseline experiment at J-PARC, Japan. This paper describes at first the T2K goals concerning the understanding of its neutrino beam and how the NA61 setup will help in providing data for accurate predictions. Abstract

The T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan needs precise predictions of the initial neutrino flux. The highest precision can be reached based on detailed measurements of hadron emission from the same target as used by T2K exposed to a proton beam of the same kinetic energy of 30 GeV. The corresponding data were recorded in 2007-2010 by the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS using a replica of the T2K graphite target. In this paper details of the experiment, data taking, data analysis method and results from the 2007 pilot run are presented. Abstract

Measurements of hadron production in p + C interactions at 31 GeV/ c are performed using the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2009 using a graphite target with a thickness of 4 % of a nuclear interaction length. Inelastic and production cross sections as well as spectra of π± , K± , p, KS0 and Λ are measured with high precision. These measurements are essential for improved calculations of the initial neutrino fluxes in the T2K long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. A comparison of the NA61/SHINE measurements with predictions of several hadroproduction models is presented.

Abstract

Measurements of particle emission from a replica of the T2K 90 cm-long carbon target were performed in the NA61/SHINE experiment at CERN SPS, using data collected during a high-statistics run in 2009. An efficient use of the long-target measurements for neutrino flux predictions in T2K requires dedicated reconstruction and analysis techniques. Fully-corrected differential yields of π± -mesons from the surface of the T2K replica target for incoming 31 GeV/ c protons are presented. A possible strategy to implement these results into the T2K neutrino beam predictions is discussed and the propagation of the uncertainties of these results to the final neutrino flux is performed.

Abstract

Spectra of K0S mesons and Λ hyperons were measured in p + C interactions at 31 GeV/c with the large acceptance NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The data were collected with an isotropic graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections, charged pion spectra, and charged kaon spectra were previously measured using the same data set. Results on K0S and Λ production in p + C interactions serve as a reference for the understanding of the enhancement of strangeness production in nucleus-nucleus collisions. Moreover, they provide important input for the improvement of neutrino flux predictions for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. Inclusive production cross sections for K0S and Λ are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 0 up to 240 mrad. The results are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. The K0S mean multiplicity in production processes ⟨nK0S⟩ and the inclusive cross section for K0S production σK0S were measured and amount to 0.127 ± 0.005 (stat) ± 0.022 (sys) and 29.0 ± 1.6 (stat) ± 5.0 (sys) mb, respectively.

19. Measurement of negatively charged pion spectra in inelastic p+p interactions at plab= 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c

Abstract

We present experimental results on inclusive spectra and mean multiplicities of negatively charged pions produced in inelastic p+p interactions at incident projectile momenta of 20, 31, 40, 80 and 158 GeV/c(√s= 6.3, 7.7, 8.8, 12.3 and 17.3 GeV, respectively). The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN super proton synchrotron. Two-dimensional spectra are determined in terms of rapidity and transverse momentum. Their properties such as the width of rapidity distributions and the inverse slope parameter of transverse mass spectra are extracted and their collision energy dependences are presented. The results on inelastic p+p interactions are compared with the corresponding data on central Pb+Pb collisions measured by the NA49 experiment at the CERN SPS. The results presented in this paper are part of the NA61/SHINE ion program devoted to the study of the properties of the onset of deconfinement and search for the critical point of strongly interacting matter. They are required for interpretation of results on nucleus–nucleus and proton–nucleus collisions.

Abstract

The T2K Collaboration reports evidence for electron neutrino appearance at the atmospheric mass splitting, vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar approximate to 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2). An excess of electron neutrino interactions over background is observed from a muon neutrino beam with a peak energy of 0.6 GeV at the Super-Kamiokande (SK) detector 295 km from the beam's origin. Signal and background predictions are constrained by data from near detectors located 280 m from the neutrino production target. We observe 11 electron neutrino candidate events at the SK detector when a background of 3.3 +/- 0.4(syst) events is expected. The background-only hypothesis is rejected with a p value of 0.0009 (3.1 sigma), and a fit assuming nu(mu) -> nu(e) oscillations with sin (2)2 theta(23) = 1, delta(CP) = 0 and vertical bar Delta m(32)(2)vertical bar = 2.4 X 10(-3) eV(2) yields sin (2)2 theta(13) = 0.088(-0.039)(+0.049)(stat + syst)., We thank the J-PARC accelerator team for the superb accelerator performance and CERN NA61 colleagues for providing essential particle production data and for their fruitful collaboration. Abstract

T2K has performed the first measurement of nu(mu) inclusive charged current interactions on carbon at neutrino energies of similar to 1 GeV where the measurement is reported as a flux-averaged double differential cross section in muon momentum and angle. The flux is predicted by the beam Monte Carlo and external data, including the results from the NA61/SHINE experiment. The data used for this measurement were taken in 2010 and 2011, with a total of 10.8 x 10(19) protons-on-target. The analysis is performed on 4485 inclusive charged current interaction candidates selected in the most upstream fine-grained scintillator detector of the near detector. The flux-averaged total cross section is (phi) = (6.91 +/- 0.13(stat) +/- 0.84(syst)) x 10(-39) cm(2)/nucleon for a mean neutrino energy of 0.85 GeV., We thank the J-PARC accelerator team for the superb accelerator performance and CERN NA61 colleagues for providing essential particle production data and for their fruitful collaboration. Abstract

The Tokai-to-Kamioka (T2K) experiment studies neutrino oscillations using an off-axismuon neutrino beam with a peak energy of about 0.6 GeV that originates at the Japan Proton Accelerator Research Complex accelerator facility. Interactions of the neutrinos are observed at near detectors placed at 280 m from the production target and at the far detector-Super-Kamiokande-located 295 km away. The flux prediction is an essential part of the successful prediction of neutrino interaction rates at the T2K detectors and is an important input to T2K neutrino oscillation and cross section measurements. A FLUKA and GEANT3-based simulation models the physical processes involved in the neutrino production, from the interaction of primary beam protons in the T2K target, to the decay of hadrons and muons that produce neutrinos. The simulation uses proton beam monitor measurements as inputs. The modeling of hadronic interactions is reweighted using thin target hadron production data, including recent charged pion and kaon measurements from the NA61/SHINE experiment. For the first T2K analyses the uncertainties on the flux prediction are evaluated to be below 15% near the flux peak. The uncertainty on the ratio of the flux predictions at the far and near detectors is less than 2% near the flux peak., We thank the J-PARC accelerator team for the superb accelerator performance and the J-PARC center for the continuous support of the T2K experiment. Abstract

We report a measurement of muon-neutrino disappearance in the T2K experiment. The 295-km muon-neutrino beam from Tokai to Kamioka is the first implementation of the off-axis technique in a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. With data corresponding to 1.43 × 10(20) protons on target, we observe 31 fully-contained single μ-like ring events in Super-Kamiokande, compared with an expectation of 104 ± 14(syst) events without neutrino oscillations. The best-fit point for two-flavor νμ → ντ oscillations is sin 2(2θ(23)) = 0.98 and |Δm(2)(32)| = 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2. The boundary of the 90% confidence region includes the points (sin2 (2θ(23)), |Δm(2)(32)|) = (1.0, 3.1 × 10(−3) eV2), (0.84, 2.65 × 10(−3) eV2) and (1.0, 2.2 × 10(−3) eV2)., Physical Review D, 85 (3), ISSN:1550-7998, ISSN:0556-2821, ISSN:1550-2368

Abstract

Precise measurement of neutrino beam direction and intensity was achieved based on a new concept with modularized neutrino detectors. INGRID (Interactive Neutrino GRID) is an on-axis near detector for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. INGRID consists of 16 identical modules arranged in horizontal and vertical arrays around the beam center. The module has a sandwich structure of iron target plates and scintillator trackers. INGRID directly monitors the muon neutrino beam profile center and intensity using the number of observed neutrino events in each module. The neutrino beam direction is measured with accuracy better than 0.4 mrad from the measured profile center. Abstract

The T2K experiment observes indications of $\nu_\mu\rightarrow \nu_e$ appearance in data accumulated with $1.43\times10^{20}$ protons on target. Six events pass all selection criteria at the far detector. In a three-flavor neutrino oscillation scenario with $|\Delta m_{23}^2|=2.4\times10^{-3}$ eV$^2$, $\sin^2 2\theta_{23}=1$ and $\sin^2 2\theta_{13}=0$, the expected number of such events is 1.5$\pm$0.3(syst.). Under this hypothesis, the probability to observe six or more candidate events is 7$\times10^{-3}$, equivalent to 2.5$\sigma$ significance. Abstract

The T2K experiment is a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment. Its main goal is to measure the last unknown lepton sector mixing angle {\theta}_{13} by observing {\nu}_e appearance in a {\nu}_{\mu} beam. It also aims to make a precision measurement of the known oscillation parameters, {\Delta}m^{2}_{23} and sin^{2} 2{\theta}_{23}, via {\nu}_{\mu} disappearance studies. Other goals of the experiment include various neutrino cross section measurements and sterile neutrino searches. The experiment uses an intense proton beam generated by the J-PARC accelerator in Tokai, Japan, and is composed of a neutrino beamline, a near detector complex (ND280), and a far detector (Super-Kamiokande) located 295 km away from J-PARC. Abstract

This document reports on the status and plans of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the CERN SPS. First, progress on detector upgrades and overviews of the 2009 and 2010 data taking periods are presented. Second, the advance in the NA61 software, the 2009 data calibration and the data analysis is reported. Finally, preliminary plans for the data taking in 2011, 2013 and 2014 are discussed in view of the scheduled stop of accelerators in 2012.

Abstract

This document presents the proposal for secondary ion beams and the updated data taking schedule of the NA61 Collaboration. The modification of the original NA61 plans is necessary in order to reach compatibility between the current I-LHC and NA61 schedules. It assumes delivery of primary proton beam in 2009–2012 and of primary lead beam in 2011–2013. The primary lead beam will be fragmented into a secondary beam of lighter ions. The modified H2 beam line will serve as a fragment separator to produce the light ion species for NA61 data taking. The expected physics performance of the NA61 experiment with secondary ion beams will be sufficient to reach the primary NA61 physics goals.

Abstract

Lattice QCD calculations locate the QCD critical point at energies accessible at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron (SPS). We present average transverse momentum and multiplicity fluctuations, as well as baryon and anti-baryon transverse mass spectra which are expected to be sensitive to effects of the critical point. The future CP search strategy of the NA61/SHINE experiment at the SPS is also discussed.

Abstract

Status of the new experimental program to study hadron production in hadron-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus collisions at the CERN SPS will be presented. Abstract

Spectra of positively charged kaons in p+C interactions at 31 GeV/c were measured with the NA61/SHINE spectrometer at the CERN SPS. The analysis is based on the full set of data collected in 2007 with a graphite target with a thickness of 4% of a nuclear interaction length. Interaction cross sections and charged pion spectra were already measured using the same set of data. These new measurements in combination with the published ones are required to improve predictions of the neutrino flux for the T2K long baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in Japan. In particular, the knowledge of kaon production is crucial for precisely predicting the intrinsic electron neutrino component and the high energy tail of the T2K beam. The results are presented as a function of laboratory momentum in 2 intervals of the laboratory polar angle covering the range from 20 up to 240 mrad. The kaon spectra are compared with predictions of several hadron production models. Using the published pion results and the new kaon data, the K+/\pi+ ratios are computed., Comment: 10 pages, 11 figures
