We use 7 waves of the Health and Retirement Study and construct a social vulnerability index (SVI) for elderly U.S. Americans (born 1913-1966). We show that the SVI is mildly larger for men than for women and increases in age from above age 60 onwards for both genders. Social vulnerability of men (but not of women) is lower in the West and Midwest than in other regions and higher income mildly reduces the SVI for men (but not for women). In cohort analysis we find an increase of the SVI for individuals born in the late 1940s or later, which is, however, statistically significant only for women. In order to investigate the nexus between social vulnerability and aging, we construct a frailty index from the same data. We find that socially vulnerable persons display more health deficits at any age. Using the initial SVI (at first interview) we find that social vulnerability exerts a significant impact on subsequent accumulation of health deficits, which is of about the same size for men and women. We study biological aging of elderly U.S. Americans born 1904-1966. We use thirteen waves of the Health and Retirement Study and construct a frailty index as the number of health deficits present in a person measured relative to the number of potential deficits. We find that, on average, Americans develop 5% more health deficits per year, that men age slightly faster than women, and that, at any age above 50, Caucasians display significantly fewer health deficits than African Americans. We also document a steady time trend of health improvements. For each year of later birth, health deficits decline on average by about 1%. This health trend is about the same across regions and for men and women, but significantly lower for African Americans compared to Caucasians. In non-linear regressions, we find that regional differences in aging follow a particular regularity, akin to the compensation effect of mortality. Health deficits converge for men and women and across American regions and suggest a life span of the American population of about 97 years.

We investigate how the season of birth is related to human health and aging. For this purpose, we use five waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset and construct a health deficit index for 21 European countries. Results from log-linear regressions suggest that, on average, elderly European men age faster when they were born in spring and summer (compared to autumn). At any given age, they have developed about 3.5 percent more health deficits. These differences due to seasons of birth are not mediated by body height and education. In a subsample of Southern European countries, where the seasonal variation of sunlight is smaller, the birth season plays an insignificant role for health in old age. In a subsample of Northern countries, in contrast, the season of birth coefficients increase. At any given age, elderly Northern European men born in spring have developed, on average, 8.7 percent more health deficits than those born in autumn. We analyze how childhood hunger affects human aging for a panel of European individuals. For this purpose, we use six waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) dataset and construct a health deficit index. Results from log-linear regressions suggest that, on average, elderly European men and women developed about 20 percent more health deficits when they experienced a hunger episode in their childhood. The effect becomes larger when the hunger episode is experienced earlier in childhood. In non-linear regressions (akin to the Gompertz-Makeham law), we obtain greater effects suggesting that health deficits in old age are up to 40 percent higher for children suffering from hunger. The difference of health deficits between hungry and non-hungry individuals increases absolutely and relatively with age. We analyze human aging-understood as health deficit accumulation-for a panel of European individuals, using four waves of the Survey of Health, Aging and Retirement in Europe (SHARE data set) and constructing a health deficit index. Results from log-linear regressions suggest that, on average, elderly European men and women develop approximately 2.5 % more health deficits from one birthday to the next. In nonlinear regressions (akin to the Gompertz-Makeham model), however, we find much greater rates of aging and large differences between men and women as well as between countries. Interestingly, these differences follow a particular regularity (akin to the compensation effect of mortality) and suggest an age at which average health deficits converge for men and women and across countries. This age, which may be associated with human life span, is estimated as 102 ± 2.6 years.

Sustainable development and raising the domestic value-added rate of exports (DVARE) have become essential priorities in the pursuit of high-quality economic growth. An econometric spatial model is developed in this research using data on Chinese enterprises spanning 2008 to 2019. According to a study, exports' domestic value-added rate (DVAR) can be successfully increased using environmental, social, and governance (ESG) practices. Spatial spillover analysis demonstrates that adopting ESG practices boosts export DVAR both within and between regions. According to heterogeneity analysis, the sample's overall increase in DVARE as a result of ESG practices is mostly attributable to the mix and processing trade organizations, the eastern area, and large firms. An examination of the underlying mechanisms shows that businesses that implement advanced technologies are able to reinforce the favorable impact of ESG practices on DVARE. This article gives evidence from real-world studies that show how ESG practices help boost Chinese exports and advance sustainable development. As the first empirical study of the nonlinear effects of digital business on global value chains (GVC), we provide insight into the nonlinear effects of digital business on the global value chain (GVC) values. We employ four indicators, including the value of online selling, sales through E-commerce, and customer relationship management (CRM) usage, to capture the prevalence of digital business in the economy. By testing a sample of 25 European countries that have been analyzed using various econometric techniques over the period 2012–2019, our estimation results confirm that GVC values are a U-shaped function of digitalization. That is, an increase in digitalization pervasiveness initially induces more significant risks and uncertainties, hindering European countries from getting involved in or scale-up within the GVC. However, a rise in digitalization pervasiveness goes beyond a specific threshold, which facilitates GVC activities as more opportunities are created. Furthermore, our findings suggest that digital business contributes significantly to reducing the adverse influences of global uncertainty on the GVC values, while the marginal effects of digital business on GVC values become more pronounced in countries with the most advanced institutional structure. This study examines the effects of the rising live streaming e-commerce on the 3DP supply chain, employing system dynamics to develop separate models for pure polymer and polymer-metal mixed printing. The analysis focuses on optimizing the 3DP supply chain configuration. Results indicate that, based solely on printing time, cost, and quality metrics, Corporate-live-3DP services are optimal for live commerce scenarios. However, despite this, Private-live-3DP maintains a substantial consumer base in practice, as evidenced by literature data and case studies. Both models pose significant challenges to conventional supply chains, necessitating adaptation. For Corporate-live-3DP, optimization strategies may include technology advancements, digital transformation, agile manufacturing, global network optimization, innovative management, collaborative R&D, fine-tuned inventory control, quality system upgrades, talent development, and organizational restructuring. Conversely, Private-live-3DP can be optimized through consolidation of private 3D printing resources, demand prediction and order optimization, supply chain collaboration platforms, quality management extensions, inventory strategy adjustments, increased transparency, regulatory compliance, and risk mitigation measures. Introduction: Alcohol consumption is associated with unintended pregnancies among teenagers. Its role as a broader determinant of teenage fertility rates remains unclear. We investigate whether adolescent binge drinking affects the number of teenage births., Methods: Binge drinking data from 137,898 females aged 15-16 were collected in the HBSC study (2002-2018, 43 countries/regions) and 267,359 in the ESPAD study (1995-2019, 41 countries/regions). Age-specific fertility rates were from the Human Fertility Database and the World Health Organization. We examined changes over time in countries' average levels of binge drinking among female pupils aged 15-16 and population-level fertility rates for the same cohorts when aged 16-19 years., Results: Controlling for differences between countries and survey waves, we found an association between binge drinking and fertility rate, B = 0.019, 95% confidence interval [0.004, 0.034]. When accounting for the countries' time trends, the association was substantially reduced, B = 0.006, 95% confidence interval [-0.0062, 0.0174]. The relationship was not moderated by abortion rates and controlling for contraceptive use had no impact on the findings., Discussion and Conclusions: The association between adolescent binge drinking and fertility rates diminishes when accounting for country-specific time trends. Given the lack of clear mechanisms linking binge drinking to trends in fertility rates rather than shorter-term changes, the association likely reflects broader secular trends. Digital trade is an advanced form of digital transformation in the field of trade. China has made significant strides in the realm of digital trade, particularly in the domain of cross-border e-commerce. It is worthwhile to consider whether the dividend of digital trade benefits enterprises and fosters new competitive advantages at the micro level. This study constructs a framework for analyzing enterprise competitiveness under the background of digital trade. The digital trade development index is measured comprehensively across five dimensions with entropy weight method and TOPSIS, reflecting China's regional diversity. A two-way fixed effects (TWFE) model is utilized to verify the influence of digital trade on enterprise competitiveness based on panel data from Chinese A-share listed companies from 2011 to 2020. The study finds that digital trade has a positive effect on enterprise competitiveness, mainly strengthening the scale factor. Furthermore, the influence of digital trade on enterprises exhibits heterogeneous characteristics. Through moderation effect testing, it is found that the positive effect of digital trade is stronger for enterprises with high participation in digital trade and market competition, while it is weakened for enterprises with high proportion of overseas business. Enterprises in China that participate in and benefit from the digital trade are mainly from non-technology-intensive industries and located in regions with better digital innovation environments, where they are more likely to adapt to the development of digital trade. Both state-owned and non-state-owned enterprises are equally affected by digital trade. Through mechanism testing, the study finds that digital trade promotes enterprise competitiveness mainly through three channels: asset expansion, cost reduction, and efficiency improvement. We investigate occupation-specific aging patterns before and after retirement and test the level and rate effects of occupation predicted by the health capital model and the health deficit model. We use five waves of the Survey of Health, Aging, and Retirement in Europe (SHARE) and construct a frailty index for elderly men and women from 10 European countries. Occupational groups are classified according to low vs. high education, blue vs. white collar, and high vs. low physical or psychosocial job burden. Controlling for individual fixed effects, we find that, regardless of the classification used, workers from the first (low-status) group display more health deficits at any age and accumulate health deficits faster than workers from the second (high-status) group. We instrument retirement by statutory retirement ages ("normal" and "early") and find that the health of workers in low-status occupations benefits greatly from retirement, whereas retirement effects for workers in high-status occupations are small and frequently insignificant. Capital misallocation is a serious threat to economic growth, and digital economy may have the potential to help curb capital misallocation. Based on the provincial panel data from 2006 to 2019, this study calculates digital economy and capital misallocation in 30 provinces of China. The classical econometric model and the spatial panel model are used to test the impact of digital economy on capital misallocation. The moderating effect model is constructed to analyze the moderating effect of innovation environment (financial development and talent agglomeration). The results show that digital economy significantly inhibits capital misallocation, this conclusion still holds after a series of robustness tests. In addition, there is a spatial spillover effect of digital economy on capital misallocation. Digital economy can inhibit not only local capital misallocation, but also neighboring capital misallocation. Financial development and talent agglomeration have a moderating effect in the relationship between digital economy and capital misallocation. It is important for China to break the "low-end lock" of the manufacturing value chain worldwide by revealing how digital trade promotes and reallocates the export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry. Panel data for 30 provinces in China from 2011 to 2020 were employed to measure the digital trade development and export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry. Benchmark regression, intermediary effect regression, panel threshold and other models were used to test the promotion and reallocation of digital trade on the export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry. The findings are as follows: (1) Digital trade promotes the export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry, with significant regional heterogeneity (eastern, central and western regions), and the most obvious promotion in technology-intensive manufacturing. (2) Technological innovation and human capital play a reallocation role in the process of digital trade, affecting the technological complexity of manufacturing exports, with mediating effects of 14.19% and 8.61%, respectively. (3) Digital trade promotes and reallocates the export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry through industrial structure upgrading, and a nonlinear relationship was found. These results provide empirical support and a decision-making basis for digital trade in promoting the export technology complexity of the manufacturing industry. The development of digital trade should be encouraged; the differential development of digital trade in the eastern, central, and western regions should be boosted; importance should be attached to the intermediary incentive role of technological innovation and human capital; and the upgrading of the industrial structure should be promoted scientifically. Background: According to the World Population Outlook (2019), people over 65, usually accompanied by various chronic diseases, will make up 16% of the population in 2050. Therefore, the health problems of middle-aged and elderly people are becoming the focus of current global attention. Some scholars have found that the health of middle-aged and elderly people is related to the childhood socio-economic environment. Methods: Using the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS) data, this paper innovatively constructed four measurement dimensions of health (namely, self-rated health, physical health, emotional health, and mental health). Moreover, logistic regression was used to explore the impact of childhood socio-economic environment (such as parent's education level, work experience, etc.) on the health status of middle-aged and elderly people. Results: Compared with a poor childhood social-economic environment, a good childhood socio-economic environment is more advantageous to the self-rated health of middle-aged and elderly people, especially a childhood socio-economic environment close to the medium level; the psychological health of middle-aged and elderly people who have experienced an adverse childhood socio-economic environment was better than those who did not; the childhood socio-economic environment has no apparent impact on the cognitive situation of middle-aged and elderly people. Conclusions: Some policy implications can be drawn. For example, the government should vigorously introduce policies to help migrant workers' children receive education in cities and provide special education guarantees for migrant workers' children. We analyse the incidence of the productive capacity of twenty Latin America and Caribbean countries on their international competitiveness (IC) for the period 2000–2018. We propose two indicators of IC and measure productive capacity through seven of the eight indicators embodied in the productive capacity index of the UNCTAD. The evidence gathered reveals three areas that have played an important role in the competitiveness of the region; these are natural resources, energy, business regulations, and information and communications technology. It follows structural change and the quality of institutions. The availability of infrastructure has had a positive impact on regional competitiveness, especially in relation to energy. However, information and communication technologies as well as transport capabilities have had a minor effect. The outstanding performance verified by the variables identifying the quality of institutions and business regulations highlights the role that politicians and policymakers can play considering they hold the tools of a major transformation in their hands. Finally, our findings indicate that regional competitiveness is highly dependent on natural and energy resources and quite influenced by institutions and regulatory frameworks. As an emerging technology, industrial intelligence focus on the integration of artificial intelligence and production, which creates a new access to achieve the goal of carbon emissions reduction. Using data on provincial panel data from 2006 to 2019 in China, we empirically analyze the impact and spatial effects of industrial intelligence on industrial carbon intensity from multiple dimensions. Results show an inverse proportionality between industrial intelligence and industrial carbon intensity, and the mechanism is to promote green technology innovation. Our results remain robust after accounting for endogenous issues. Viewed from spatial effect, industrial intelligence can inhibit not only the industrial carbon intensity of the region but also the surrounding areas. More strikingly, the impact of industrial intelligence in the eastern region is more obvious than that in the central and western regions. This paper effectively complements the research on the influencing factors of industrial carbon intensity and provides a reliable empirical basis for industrial intelligence to reduce industrial carbon intensity, as well as a policy reference for the green development of the industrial sector. Although frailty is an important, well-characterized concept in the provision of medical care to older adults, it has not been linked to the concept of vulnerability developed in the humanities and social sciences. Here, we distinguish between the two main dimensions of vulnerability: a fundamental, anthropological dimension in which people are exposed to a risk of injury, and a relational dimension in which people depend on each other and on their environment. The relational notion of vulnerability might provide healthcare professionals with a better understanding of frailty (and its potential interaction with precarity). Precarity situates people in their relationship with a social environment that might threaten their living conditions. Frailty corresponds to individual-level changes in adaptation to a living environment and the loss of ability to evolve or react in that environment. Therefore, we suggest that by considering the geriatric notion of frailty as a particular form of relational vulnerability, healthcare professionals could better understand the specific needs of frail, older people—and thus provide more appropriate care. Sustainable Development Goal 9 targets (SDG 9 targets) are mainly tracked through the indicators of penetration of internet and mobile broadband subscription, logistic performance index, quality and ranking of the universities, investment in research and development initiatives, industrial reforms and emission control, and connectivity to rural areas. The attainment of many of these targets and tracking of indicators is confronted by challenges of poor awareness, funding issues, distorted policies, and implementation failures. This systematic review on achievements, challenges, and future scope in attaining SDG 9 consolidates the literature from the Web of Science, related to SDG 9 and indicators, since 2017; develops bibliometric patterns; conducts thematic analysis by focusing the leading indicators of SDG 9; and develops agenda for future research. The major limitations of this study include focusing on selected indicators and limited literature availability. This review recommends policymakers, researchers, and administrators to focus on promising themes such as tackling the digital divide and ensuring digital justice and digital equality; clean fuel and technology adoption; enhancing internet and mobile broadband subscription with reduced negative impacts, logistic sector reforms; industrial policy reforms and technology integration; improving the quality and sustainability of universities; and increasing funding and support for research and development initiatives and improving the rural connectivity. Turkey's inclusion in the Belt and Road Initiative in 2015 has raised the expectations of Turkish businesses and government concerning growth-generating investment from China. Existing studies on Chinese investments in Turkey lack sufficient data on the volume of investment, types of firms, and sectoral composition. Based on a novel dataset of Chinese investments in Turkey, this article contributes to filling this gap. We show that although Chinese investment in Turkey has increased considerably in recent years, it remains quite modest compared with investments from the West. Moreover, despite the expanding activities of Chinese technology companies, more than half of Chinese investment in Turkey consists of low value-added manufacturing, extraction of raw materials, and marketing of Chinese products. Social vulnerability refers to the attributes of society that make people and places susceptible to natural disasters, adverse health outcomes, and social inequalities. Using a social vulnerability index (SVI), we investigated social vulnerability prevalence and its relationship with food insecurity in South Africa (SA). In this nationally representative cross-sectional survey, we calculated SVI scores from 3402 respondents (median age, 35 (26–46) years) using an SVI developed by the United States (US) Centers for Disease Control and prevention (CDC) adapted for a South African context. We measured food insecurity using a modified Community Childhood Hunger Identification Project. Findings classified 20.6% and 20.4% of adults as socially vulnerable and food insecure, respectively. The risk of food insecurity was almost threefold higher in the social vulnerability group (OR 2.76, 95% CI 2.76–2.77, p < 0.001) compared to their counterparts. The SVI could be a useful tool to guide government and policymakers in the facilitation of social relief initiatives for those most vulnerable. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

To commemorate 40 years since the founding of the Journal of Business Ethics, the editors in chief of the journal have invited the editors to provide commentaries on the future of business ethics. This essay comprises a selection of commentaries aimed at creating dialogue around the theme Technology, Megatrends and Work. Of all the profound changes in business, technology is perhaps the most ubiquitous. There is not a facet of our lives unaffected by internet technologies and artificial intelligence. The Journal of Business Ethics established a dedicated section that focuses on Technology and Business Ethics, yet issues related to this phenomenon run right through all the sections. Kirsten Martin, editor of the Technology and Business Ethics section, joins our interim social media editor, Hannah Trittin-UIbrich, to advance a human-centric approach to the development and application of digital technologies that places Business Ethics at centre of the analysis. For Shuili Du, technology is the defining condition for a new era of Corporate Social Responsibility—CSR 3.0—which she defines as "a company's socially responsible strategies and practices that deal with key ethical and socio-technical issues associated with AI and related technologies on the one hand and leverage the power of AI and related technologies to tackle social and environmental problems on the other hand." It is not just technologies that are a determining feature of our lives but technology companies, an argument made by Glen Whelan as he examines Big Business and the need for a Big Business Ethics as we try to understand the impact of Big Tech on our post-work world. Indeed, as noted by Ernesto Noronha and Premilla D'Cruz, megatrends in addition to advancement in technologies, namely globalization, the greening of economies, and changes in demographics and migration, are shaping the future for workers in ways previously unimaginable. Contributing to this important debate, Praveen Parboteeah considers the influence of another longstanding but oft overlooked megatrend, the role of religion in the workplace. Given the enormity of the influence of technology and other megatrends in our world, it is not surprising that this essay introduces ground-breaking ideas that speak to the future of business ethics research. Land is a limited resource and essential to the provision of livelihoods. The per capita availability of cropland is constantly being reduced while the pressure for food and other raw materials increases. Therefore, agricultural land use must pursue cropping systems with higher levels of return per hectare. Since monetary return is one of the primary criteria for farmers' decision-making but other returns exist, the present study compares the financial returns per hectare on farms using organic farming system (OFS) and conventional farming system (CFS), discussing returns beyond the financial ones (social, economic, environmental). The financial flows of two farms were monitored for 4 (OFS) and 5 (CFS) years, and financial return indicators were calculated. In addition, other social, economic, and environmental returns were discussed based on the primary data and literature. The main results show that OFS has higher costs, revenues, and profits per hectare than CFS. Although both systems had positive financial returns, the average net profit of OFS (R$49,217 ha−1) was 21 times higher than that of CFS (R$2,329 ha−1). In addition, the OFS profitability index was 64% higher than CFS. OFS also presented better returns for the number of direct jobs, income distribution, food for healthy diets, value-added to GDP, risks, crop (bio)diversity, and land footprint, among others. In general, we concluded that OFS provided higher financial, social, economic, and environmental returns per unit of land despite only 0.5% of the Brazilian agricultural area is used for organic production. Highlights: 1. Organic and conventional systems present positive financial returns per hectare. 2. Costs, revenues, and profit are 9, 13, and 22 times higher in organic systems, respectively. 3. Organic system profitability was 64% higher than conventional. 4. Organic system is beneficial for other social, economic, and environmental returns. 5. BACKGROUND: Despite the great potential that technical solutions, based on the Internet of Things (IoT), offer for companies, especially small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), companies are hesitant to implement such solutions. Reasons for this lie in the resulting far-reaching change, which particularly affects working activities and communication between employees and IoT objects in their environment. OBJECTIVE: Our objective is to investigate (1) how the implementation of an IoT solution, consisting of multiple objects, might be integrated into daily working activities; (2) what reactions might occur at the individual level; and (3) what structural conditions should be established at the organizational level. METHODS: We applied a scenario-based design. Specifically, we conducted interviews to develop personas and scenarios describing human–machine interactions during implementation of the IoT solution in an initial phase. RESULTS: Regarding changing work activities, we identified three structural conditions that facilitate the implementation of IoT in SMEs: (1) the development of a support unit that bundles communication and training activities as well as internal and external knowledge; (2) the planning of an appropriate testing and adoption phase that enables participation and feedback; and (3) the creation of an incentive structure that includes social reward, empowerment, and recognition. CONCLUSION: IoT gives employees enhanced access to resources, information, and feedback, supporting an efficient way of working. To successfully implement IoT solutions, companies, especially SMEs, must actively address organizational change and empower their employees to manage technological innovations at an early stage. With China's rapidly aging population, this paper constructs a policy model using overlapping generation (OLG) model and the computable general equilibrium (CGE) modeling to analyze the second-child policy and delaying retirement policy. Our research findings suggest that considering the short-term effects, delaying the retirement age imposes a greater impact on the economy than the second-child policy. Its economic impact increases initially, but then decreases to a stable level showing a diminishing influence. In the long term, the second-child policy has greater ability to boost the economy than the delaying retirement age policy and its economic impact gets stronger. From an industrial output perspective, the two policies exert greater influence on agriculture, light industry, finance and service sector than on construction and heavy industries. From an industrial import and export perspective, the two policies have great influence on finance, electric power, and fossil energy more than they do on the agricultural sector. From a monetary perspective, the impacts are greater on household income followed by the government income and corporate income, respectively. The development of the digital economy is conducive to the innovative development of foreign trade and the formation of a "dual circulation" development pattern in China. Based on the panel data of 285 prefecture-level cities in China from 2005 to 2019, this paper examines the influence of the digital economy on urban export trade and its heterogeneity. And we use a mediating effect model to explore the possible mediating role of technological progress in the above influences. The results find that: (1) The improvement of the digital economy can promote cities export; (2) The promotion of the digital economy to the growth of city export scale is heterogeneous, which is more significant in the western and northeastern cities with relatively remote geographical locations, and the third-tier and lower cities with relatively backward economic development. (3) Technological progress has played a significant role in promoting the growth of export for the digital economy. Thus, it's of great importance for China to increase investment in digital economy infrastructure and pay more attention to the differences in diverse city development processes. Background Frailty can be operationalised using the deficit accumulation approach, which considers health deficits across multiple domains. We aimed to develop, validate and compare three different frailty indices (FI) constructed from self-reported health measures (FI-Self Report), blood-based biomarkers (FI-Blood) and examination-based assessments (FI-Examination). Methods Up to 30,027 participants aged 45–85 years from the baseline (2011–2015) comprehensive cohort of the Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging were included in the analyses. Following standard criteria, three FIs were created: a 48-item FI-Self Report, a 23-item FI-Blood and a 47-item FI-Examination. In addition a 118-item FI-Combined was constructed. Mortality status was ascertained in July 2019. Results FI-Blood and FI-Examination demonstrated broader distributions than FI-Self Report. FI-Self Report and FI-Blood scores were higher in females, whereas FI-Examination scores were higher in males. All FI scores increased nonlinearly with age and were highest at lower education levels. In sex and age-adjusted models, a 0.01 increase in FI score was associated with a 1.08 [95% confidence interval (CI): 1.07,1.10], 1.05 (1.04,1.06), 1.07 (1.05,1.08) and a 1.13 (1.11,1.16) increased odds of mortality for FI-Self Report, FI-Blood, FI-Examination and FI-Combined, respectively. Inclusion of the three distinct FI types in a single model yielded the best prognostic accuracy and model fit, even compared to the FI-Combined, with all FIs remaining independently associated with mortality. Conclusion Characteristics of all FIs were largely consistent with previously established FIs. To adequately capture frailty levels and to improve our understanding of the heterogeneity of ageing, FIs should consider multiple types of deficits including self-reported, blood and examination-based measures. It is well documented that the environment of the developing fetus, including availability of nutrients and presence of toxins, can have major impact on adult phenotype, age-related traits and risk of chronic disease. There is also accumulating evidence that postnatal environment can impact adult characteristics related to evolutionary fitness, health, and aging. To determine whether early life hormonal interventions can alter trajectory of aging, we have examined the effects of early life growth hormone (GH) replacement therapy in Prop1df (Ames dwarf) mice which are GH deficient and remarkably long lived. Twice-daily GH injections between the ages of two and eight weeks completely normalized ("rescued") a number of adult metabolic characteristics believed to contribute to extended longevity of these mutants. Importantly, longevity of Ames dwarf mice was reduced by early life GH treatment. This was associated with histone H3 modifications. We conclude that the trajectory of mammalian aging can be modified by early life interventions. Mechanistic links among interventions during postnatal development, adult metabolic characteristics, aging, and longevity, apparently involve epigenetic phenomena. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: Oral and maxillofacial surgery (OMFS) has undergone pioneering progress through the development of three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies. The aim of this study was to evaluate the use of 3D printing at OMFS university and non-university hospitals and private practices in Germany. Materials and methods: For explorative assessment, a dynamic online questionnaire containing 10–22 questions about the current use of 3D printing and the reasons behind it was sent to OMFS university and non-university hospitals and private practices in Germany by the study group from the German Association of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (DGMKG). Results: In total, 156 participants responded from university (23 [14.7%]) and non-university hospitals (19 [12.2%]) and private practices without (85 [50.5%]) and with 29 (18.6%) inpatient treatment facility. Highest applications of 3D printing were in implantology (57%), microvascular bone reconstructions (25.6%), and orthognathics (21.1%). Among the participants, 37.8% reportedly were not using 3D printing. Among the hospitals and private practices, 21.1% had their own 3D printer, and 2.5% shared it with other departments. The major reason for not having a 3D printer was poor cost efficiency (37.6%). Possessing a 3D printer was motivated by independence from external providers (91.3%) and rapid template production (82.6%). The preferred printing methods were stereolithography (69.4 %) and filament printing (44.4%). Conclusions: OMFS 3D printing is established in Germany with a wide range of applications. Clinical relevance: The prevalence of 3D printing in hospitals and private practices is moderate. This may be enhanced by future innovations including improved cost efficiency. In many human populations, especially those living in regions with pronounced climatic differences between seasons, the most sensitive (prenatal and neonatal) developmental stages occur in contrasting conditions depending on the season of conception. The difference in prenatal and postnatal environments may be a factor significantly affecting human development and risk for later life chronic diseases. Factors potentially contributing to this kind of developmental programming include nutrition, outdoor temperature, infectious exposures, duration of sunlight, vitamin D synthesis, etc. Month of birth is commonly used as a proxy for exposures which vary seasonally around the perinatal period. Season-of-birth patterns have been identified for many chronic health outcomes. In this review, the research evidence for the seasonality of birth in adult-life disorders is provided and potential mechanisms underlying the phenomenon of early life seasonal programming of chronic disease and longevity are discussed. Background: Previous studies have suggested associations between testosterone, genetic factors, and a series of complex diseases, but the associations with the lifespan phenotype, such as health span, remain unclear. Methods: In this prospective cohort study, we analyzed 145,481 men and 147,733 women aged 38–73 years old from UK Biobank (UKB) to investigate the sex-specific associations of total testosterone (TT), free testosterone (FT), or polygenic risk score (PRS) with health span termination (HST) risk. At baseline, serum testosterone levels were measured. HST was defined by eight events strongly associated with longevity. PRS, an efficient tool combining the effect of common genetic variants to discriminate genetic risk of complex phenotypes, was constructed by 12 single-nucleotide polymorphisms related to health span from UKB (P ≤ 5.0 × 10−8). We used multivariable Cox regression models to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Results: With a median follow-up time of 7.70 years, 26,748 (18.39%) men and 18,963 (12.84%) women had HST. TT was negatively associated with HST in men [HR per standard deviation (SD) increment of log-TT: 0.92, 95% CI: 0.88–0.97]. Inversely, both TT (HR per SD increment of log-TT: 1.05, 95% CI: 1.02–1.08) and FT (HR per SD increment of log-FT: 1.08, 95% CI: 1.05–1.11) presented an increased risk of HST in women. PRS was positively associated with HST risk (quintile 5 versus quintile 1, men, HR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.15–1.24; women, HR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.16–1.27). Moreover, men with high TT and low genetic risk showed the lowest HST risk (HR: 0.80, 95% CI: 0.73–0.88), whereas HST risk for women with both high TT and genetic risk increased obviously (HR: 1.32, 95% CI: 1.19–1.46). Similar joint effects were observed for FT in both genders. Conclusions: We observed sex-specific associations that testosterone was negatively associated with HST risk in men and positively associated with HST risk in women. Genetic factors increased the HST risk, suggesting that participants with both high genetic risk and abnormal testosterone levels (high level in women or low level in men) should be the target for early intervention. We study medical progress within a two-sector economy of overlapping generations subject to endogenous mortality. Individuals demand health care with a view to lowering mortality over their life-cycle. We characterise the individual optimum and the general equilibrium, and study the impact of a major medical innovation leading to an improvement in the effectiveness of health care. We find that general equilibrium effects dampen strongly the increase in health care usage following medical innovation. Moreover, an increase in savings offsets the negative impact on GDP per capita of a decline in the support ratio. Finally, we show that the reallocation of resources between the final goods and health care sector, following the innovation, plays a crucial role in shaping the general equilibrium impact.
