Background: Accurate diagnostic and prognostic predictions of venous thromboembolism (VTE) are crucial for VTE management. Artificial intelligence (AI) enables autonomous identification of the most predictive patterns from large complex data. Although evidence regarding its performance in VTE prediction is emerging, a comprehensive analysis of performance is lacking. Aims: To systematically review the performance of AI in the diagnosis and prediction of VTE and compare it to clinical risk assessment models (RAMs) or logistic regression models. Methods: A systematic literature search was performed using PubMed, MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Web of Science from inception to April 20, 2021. Search terms included "artificial intelligence" and "venous thromboembolism." Eligible criteria were original studies evaluating AI in the prediction of VTE in adults and reporting one of the following outcomes: sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value, or area under receiver operating curve (AUC). Risks of bias were assessed using the PROBAST tool. Unpaired t‐test was performed to compare the mean AUC from AI versus conventional methods (RAMs or logistic regression models). Results: A total of 20 studies were included. Number of participants ranged from 31 to 111 888. The AI‐based models included artificial neural network (six studies), support vector machines (four studies), Bayesian methods (one study), super learner ensemble (one study), genetic programming (one study), unspecified machine learning models (two studies), and multiple machine learning models (five studies). Twelve studies (60%) had both training and testing cohorts. Among 14 studies (70%) where AUCs were reported, the mean AUC for AI versus conventional methods were 0.79 (95% CI: 0.74–0.85) versus 0.61 (95% CI: 0.54–0.68), respectively (p <.001). However, the good to excellent discriminative performance of AI methods is unlikely to be replicated when used in clinical practice, because most studies had high risk of bias due to missing data handling and outcome determination. Conclusion: The use of AI appears to improve the accuracy of diagnostic and prognostic prediction of VTE over conventional risk models; however, there was a high risk of bias observed across studies. Objectives. We compared the prevalence of risk factors for Black and White suicide decedents in Fulton County, Georgia, from 1988-2002. Methods. We used data from the Fulton County Medical Examiner's Office to compile information on suicides that occurred in Fulton County between 1988 and 2002. We used the [X.sup.2] test and logistic regression to identify associations between suicide risk factors and race. Results. Black suicide decedents were more likely than White suicide decedents to be male (odds ratio [OR] = 2.06; 95% confidence interval [Cl] = 1.38, 3.09), to be younger, ([less than or equal to]24 y [OR=4.74; 95% (31=2.88, 7.81]; 25-34 y [OR=2.79; 95% Cl=1.74, 4.47]; 35-44 y [OR= 1.86; 95% Cl=1.13, 3.07]), and to hurt others in a suicide (OR=4.22; 95% Cl=1.60, 11.15) but less likely to report depression (OR = 0.63; 95% Cl = 0.48, 0.83), to have a family history of suicide (OR = 0.08; 95% Cl=0.01, 0.61), or to leave a suicide note (OR=0.37; 95% Cl=0.26, 0.52). Conclusions. Future research should consider that Black suicide decedents are less likely to report depression than White suicide decedents. This suicide risk difference is important when developing effective suicide prevention programs.

Introduction: In the network of U.S. comprehensive haemophilia treatment centres (HTCs), von Willebrand disease (VWD) is the most common bleeding disorder other than haemophilia. Estimates of the size and characteristics of the VWD population receiving treatment are useful for healthcare planning. Aim: Estimate the prevalence and incidence of VWD among males and females receiving care at U.S. HTCs (HTC‐treated prevalence and incidence). Methods: During the period 2012–2019, de‐identified surveillance data were collected on all VWD patients who visited an HTC including year of birth, sex, race, Hispanic ethnicity, VWD type, and laboratory findings and used to calculate period HTC‐treated prevalence by VWD type and sex. Data from patients born 1995–1999 were used to estimate HTC‐treated incidence rates. Results: During the period, 24,238 patients with a diagnosis of VWD attended HTCs; for 23,479 (96.9%), VWD type was reported or could be assigned. Age‐adjusted HTC‐treated prevalence was 8.6 cases/100,000 (7.2/100,000 for Type 1, 1.2/100,000 for Type 2 and 1.7/million for Type 3) and was twice as high in women as men (4.8 vs. 2.4 cases/100,000) for Type 1 and similar by sex for Type 2 and Type 3. HTC‐treated Type 1 incidence increased over the period, averaging nearly threefold higher for women than men (26.2 vs. 9.9/100,000 live births). Sex differences were less for Type 2 (2.2 vs. 1.4 cases/100,000 births) and slight in Type 3. Conclusion: Prevalence and incidence of HTC‐treated VWD differ by sex and type and are likely strongly influenced by differences in rates of diagnosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
