1. Physico-mechanical Properties of Unsaturated Polyester Resin Reinforced Maize Cob and Jute Fiber Composites

Abstract

In this research, the composites of maize cob (MC)/unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) and composites of jute fiber (JF)/unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) were prepared using the hand lay-up technique. The study employed 5%, 10%, 15%, and 20% filler loadings for the preparation of the MC/UPR and JF/UPR composites. The composites were subsequently characterized to examine their mechanical and physical properties. The results reveal that the increase in percentage filler loading decreases the tensile strength, impact strength, flexural strength, hardness, and density, whereas the water absorption increases at higher filler loading. This observation could be ascribed to clumping, voids, and agglomeration formed during composites preparation for both fillers. The MC/UPR composite exhibited better flexural resistance of 31.41 Mpa to 28.88 Mpa compared to 25.72 Mpa to 22.14 Mpa for JF/UPR due to the excellent dispersion of MC, larger surface area, and intermolecular interactions between the particulate MC filler/matrix. The MC/UPR composites also exhibited higher density compared to the JF/UPR due to the larger surface area and reduced voids in the structure. Overall, the study demonstrated that the valorization of maize cob and jute fibers into composite materials is a sustainable and environmental approach to waste disposal and management.

Abstract

This article investigated the utilization of the Sammaz-14 variety of maize (Zea mays spp.) cobs for the isolation of nanocelluloses through chemical and mechanical methods. The extracted nanocelluloses were characterized by particle size analysis (PSA), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). Morphological analysis was performed through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FESEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM), whereas energy disperse X-ray (EDX) was used to determine the elemental composition. The isolated maize cob nanocrystals (MC-NC) and maize cob nanofibres (MC-NF) were obtained in nanoscale, as shown by PSA. Thermal analysis showed that MC-NF is more thermally stable when compared to MC-NC. FTIR revealed identical spectrums for MC-NC and MC-NF with minor deviation from the MC-UT due to the elimination of the 1700 cm−1 peak. Morphological studies showed MC-NC and MC-NF have needlelike structures, while the untreated maize cob (MC-UT) is plain due to the amorphous portion. MC-NC has higher crystallinity of 78% compared to 61% for MC-NF and 40% for MC-UT.

Abstract

AbstractReprocessing of synthetic fiber-reinforced thermoplastics for reuse in the design of structural components applications is important owing to their non-biodegradability. This study evaluates the effect of reprocessing on the service life properties of in-house polypropylene wastes reinforced with E-glass fiber. Composite materials containing 10 mm length glass fiber (GF) and recycled polypropylene were manufactured with 10 wt% GF and subjected to five reprocessing cycles via extrusion and compression molding under similar conditions. Properties such as mechanical, melt flow index (MFI), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, x-ray diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis were used to analyze the effect of reprocessing on the composites. The results obtained revealed that the composites’ properties diminished with successive reprocessing. The thermal study showed reductions in the thermal stabilities with a drop in onset degradation temperature from 338.07 to 245.15 °C after five runs, indicating an increase in the polymer chain molecular movement and less rigidity due to shorter chains provided by X-ray diffraction analysis with reduced peak intensities, average crystallite sizes, and degree of crystallinities but no destruction of the main functional groups was observed with the spectral studies. An increase in the MFI (6 g/10–17.88 g/10 min) indicated the possible loss of complex viscosity and damage in molecular weight for the reprocessed matrix. Reinforced in-house PP plastics can, therefore, be reprocessed twice only for the same product except with the addition of either virgin PP or other materials to compensate for the lost properties and help manufacturers save costs.

Abstract

The growing concerns about global warming and depleting petroleum reserves have made scientists/researchers focus more on the use of natural fibres such as Maize cob, bagasse, coir, sisal among others. About 180 kg of cobs are obtained from each ton of maize shelled which has little utilization or no utilization. This study utilizes maize cob from SAMMAZ-14 maize variety for the extraction of nano cellulose using Chemico-mechanical method. Alkaline hydrolysis was performed with 5% NaOH for 4hrs with MLR of 1:10. Ball milling was done for 5 hrs with BMR of 30:1. The extracted nanocellulose were characterized by thermal characterization (TG and DTG), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Energy Disperse X-ray (EDX) and atomic force microscopy (AFM), which confirmed the extracted Maize cob nano fibres (MC-NF) were in nano scale ranging from 1-100 and 1-200nm in diameter and length respectively. Thermal analysis showed MC-NF has more thermal stability than untreated maize cob (MC-UT) whose degradation was initiated at lower temperature with higher charred formation. Morphological studies showed MC-NF has spindle like structures while the untreated maize cob (MC-UT) is plain due to high amorphous portion on the cellulosic structure.

Abstract

Pineapple Leaf Fibre (PALF) is one of the natural fibres that have high potential in the industry. Natural fibres have become the main alternative source for reinforced polymer composites. The objective of this study is to observe the effect of chemical treatments using Sodium Hydroxide (NaOH) solution, Zinc chloride, Acetic Anhydride and Nitric acid on the mechanical properties of pineapple leaf fibre reinforced polypropylene composites. The tensile test was conducted by using the ASTM D638-10 to obtain the tensile strength (TS) and Young’s modulus (YM), Flexural properties were conducted to determine the flexural strength (FS) and flexural modulus (FM) of the reinforced composites using the ASTM D256-10 method, and impact test was conducted to determine the impact strength (IS) of the reinforced composites using the Izod ASTM D790-17 method. From the results obtained, the composites with surface modified PALF fillers show enhanced mechanical properties over the untreated PALF fillers in this order; for TS untreated composite C3H6O3 3. For YM untreated composite 3 C3H6O3 3 3H6O3. For FM, untreated reinforced PALF/PP composites C3H6O3 3. For IS, the untreated reinforced PALF/PP composites 3 C3H6O3. SEM analysis was carried out on the PALF before the compounding to analyze the effect of the surface modification agents.

Abstract

Date seeds were collected, washed, ground and sieved to 63 µm. A portion of the particles was subjected to alkaline treatment at 1, 3, 5, 7 and 10 %. FTIR analysis was carried out to assess the extent of chemical modification on the date seed particles. Waste polypropylene (wPP) / date seed particles (DSP) composites were fabricated by compounding and compression moulding using both the untreated and treated particles at 20 % filler loading. Tensile and flexural test, impact test and hardness (HV) of the composites were conducted and evaluated. The alkaline treatment improved tensile and flexural strength, elongation at break, impact strength and hardness while tensile and flexural modulus showed a decrease with increase in alkaline concentration.

Abstract

This research was carried out to study the thermal conductivity (TC) properties of pineapple leaf fibre (PALF) reinforced polypropylene (PP) composites. The pineapple leaf fibre dimensions were altered specifically at the macro, micro and nano dimensional states. It was considered that the thermal conductivity (TC) behavior of pineapple leaf fibre/polypropylene (PALF/PP) composites would be significantly higher when the pineapple leaf fibre which is the reinforcement agent undergoes dimensional changes. The study also considered the effect the fibre surface modification agents would have on the thermal behavior of the reinforced pineapple leaf fibre /polypropylene composites. The fibre surface modification agents used in this study are sodium hydroxide, zinc chloride, acetic anhydride and nitric acid. The guided plate steady state approach for determining thermal conductivity was used in this research. Results showed that the micro and nano fibrils of the reinforcing agent contributed to the enhanced thermal conductivity behavior of the reinforced pineapple leaf fibre/polypropylene composites. The results obtained also showed that the reinforced microfibrils pineapple leaf fibre /polypropylene composites and reinforced nanofibrils pineapple leaf fibre/polypropylene composites modified with nitric acid exhibits higher thermal conductivity than reinforced pineapple leaf fibre/polypropylene (PALF/PP) composites modified with acetic anhydride, zinc chloride, sodium hydroxide and the unmodified pineapple leaf fibre in descending order respectively.
