Abstract

Abstract Background Child healthcare services such as diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (DPT3) vaccination are known to reduce childhood mortality and morbidity. However, inequalities in access to these services in developing countries continue to constrain global efforts aimed at improving child health. This study examines the impact and equity effect of a community-based primary healthcare programme known as the Ghana Essential Health Intervention Programme (GEHIP) on improving the uptake of childhood DPT3 immunisation coverage in a remote rural region of Ghana. Methods Using baseline and end-line household survey data collected from mothers, the effect of GEHIP’s community-based healthcare programme on DPT3 immunisation coverage is evaluated using difference-in-differences multivariate logistic regression models. Household wealth index and maternal educational attainment were used as equity measures. Results At end-line, both intervention and comparison districts recorded increases in DPT3 immunisation coverage although intervention districts had a relatively higher coverage than comparison districts (90% versus 88%). While children resident in intervention areas had slightly higher rates than children resident in comparison areas, regression results show that this difference was not statistically significant (DiD = 0.038, p-value = 0.102). There were also no significant equity disparities in the coverage of DPT3 vaccination for both household wealth index and maternal educational attainment. Conclusion DPT3 vaccination coverage in both study arms met the global vaccine action plan targets. However, because estimated effects are not significantly higher among treatment area children than among comparison districts counterparts, no equity/inequity effects of the community-based healthcare programme on DPT 3 coverage is evident.

Abstract Background There is concern that rates of mental disorders may be increasing although findings disagree. Using an innovative design with a daughter-mother data set we assess whether there has been a generational increase in lifetime ever rates of major depressive disorder, generalised anxiety disorder, panic disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) experienced prior to 30 years of age. Methods Pregnant women were recruited during 1981–1983 and administered the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI) at the 27-year follow-up (2008–11). Abstract

Canine rabies poses a significant risk to humans and animals in Nigeria. However, the lack of reliable tools to evaluate the performance of existing canine rabies control programs to inform public health policy decisions poses a severe obstacle. We obtained canine rabies surveillance data from the National Veterinary Research Institute (NVRI) and supplemented these data with rabies diagnoses reported in the published studies from Nigeria. To uncover contextual factors (i.e., environmental and sociodemographic) associated with canine rabies evidence at the Local Government Area (LGA) level, we classified LGAs in Nigeria into four categories based on evidence availability (i.e., LGAs with NVRI data or published studies, both, or no evidence). We described the geographical and temporal variation in coverage. We fitted a multinomial regression model to examine the association between LGA level canine rabies evidence and potential sociodemographic and ecological determinants of canine rabies evidence. The effective annual testing during the 19 years was less than one dog/100,000 Nigerian resident-year. Our results showed that 58% of Nigerian LGAs (450/774) had not been targeted by the existing national rabies surveillance or studies on rabies, including ten states capitals with high human populations. While 16% (122/774) of Nigerian LGAs concentrated in Taraba, Adamawa, and Abia had canine rabies evidence from published studies, none of these LGAs was represented in the NVRI rabies surveillance data. We also observed an increasing trend in rabies evidence over time towards the eastern part of Nigeria. Our multinomial regression model indicated that education level, poverty, population density, land use and temperature were significantly associated with canine rabies evidence at the LGA level. This study underscores the value of combining canine rabies evidence from different sources to better understand the current disease situation for targeted intervention.

Abstract

High voltage (~2 kV) AlGaN-channel HEMTs were fabricated with 64% Aluminum composition in the channel. The average on-resistance was ~75 ohm. mm (~21 miliohm. cm^2) for LGD = 20 microns. Breakdown voltage reached >3 kV (tool limit) before passivation however it reduced to ~2 kV after SiN surface passivation and field plates. The apparent high breakdown voltage prior to passivation can possibly be attributed to the field plate effect of the charged trap states of the surface. The breakdown voltage and RON demonstrated a strong linear correlation in a scattered plot with ~50 measured transistors. In pulsed IV measurements with 100 microsecond pulse width and 40 V of off-state bias (tool limit), the dynamic RON increased by ~5% compared to DC RON and current collapse was <10%., Comment: 4 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Abstract Background The ability to distinguish resident microglia from infiltrating myeloid cells by flow cytometry-based surface phenotyping is an important technique for examining age-related neuroinflammation. The most commonly used surface markers for the identification of microglia include CD45 (low-intermediate expression), CD11b, Tmem119, and P2RY12. Methods In this study, we examined changes in expression levels of these putative microglia markers in in vivo animal models of stroke, cerebral amyloid angiopathy (CAA), and aging as well as in an ex vivo LPS-induced inflammation model. Results We demonstrate that Tmem119 and P2RY12 expression is evident within both CD45int and CD45high myeloid populations in models of stroke, CAA, and aging. Interestingly, LPS stimulation of FACS-sorted adult microglia suggested that these brain-resident myeloid cells can upregulate CD45 and downregulate Tmem119 and P2RY12, making them indistinguishable from peripherally derived myeloid populations. Importantly, our findings show that these changes in the molecular signatures of microglia can occur without a contribution from the other brain-resident or peripherally sourced immune cells. Conclusion We recommend future studies approach microglia identification by flow cytometry with caution, particularly in the absence of the use of a combination of markers validated for the specific neuroinflammation model of interest. The subpopulation of resident microglia residing within the “infiltrating myeloid” population, albeit small, may be functionally important in maintaining immune vigilance in the brain thus should not be overlooked in neuroimmunological studies.

Abstract

Background: Suicidal ideation and anxiety are common among adolescents although their prevalence has predominantly been studied in high income countries. This study estimated the population prevalence of suicidal ideation and anxiety and their correlates with peer support, parent-adolescent relationship, peer victimization, conflict, isolation and loneliness across a range of low-income, lower-middle-income, upper-middle-income countries and high-income countries (LMICHICs). Methods: Data were drawn from the Global School-based Student Health Survey (GSHS) of adolescents aged 12–17 years between 2003 and 2015 in 82 LM-HICs from the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions. For those countries with repeated time point data in this study, we used data from the most recent survey. We estimated weighted prevalence of suicidal ideation and anxiety by country, region and at a global level with the following questions:-“Did you ever seriously consider attempting suicide during the past 12 months?” and “During the past 12 months, how often have you been so worried about something that you could not sleep at night?”. We used multiple binary logistic regression to estimate the adjusted association between adolescent age, sex, socioeconomic status, peer support, parent-adolescent relationship, peer victimization, conflict, isolation and loneliness with suicidal ideation and anxiety. Findings: The sample comprised of 275,057 adolescents aged 12–17 years (mean age was 14.6 (SD 1.18) years of whom 51.8% were females). The overall 12 months pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation and anxiety were 14.0% (95% CI 10.0–17.0%) and 9.0% (7.0–12.0%) respectively. The highest pooled prevalence of suicidal ideation was observed in the Africa Region (21.0%; 20.0–21.0%) and the lowest was in the Asia region (8.0%, 8.0–9.0%). For anxiety, the highest pooled prevalence was observed in Eastern Mediterranean Region (17.0%, 16.0–17.0%) the lowest was in the European Region (4.0%, 4.0–5.0%). Being female, older age, having a lower socioeconomic status and having no close friends were associated with a greater risk of suicidal ideation and anxiety. A higher levels of parental control was positively associated with a greater likelihood of experiencing suicidal ideation (OR: 1.65, 1.45–1.87) and anxiety (1.53, 1.30–1.80). Parental understanding and monitoring were negatively associated with mental health problems. Similarly, the odds of experiencing suicidal ideation and anxiety were higher among adolescents who had been experiencing peer conflict (1.36, 1.24–1.50; 1.54, 1.40–1.70), peer victimization (1.26, 1.15–1.38; 1.13, 1.02–1.26), peer isolation (1.69, 1.53–1.86; 1.76, 1.61–1.92) and reported loneliness (2.56, 2.33–2.82; 5.63, 5.21–6.08). Interpretations: Suicidal ideation and anxiety are prevalent among adolescents although there is significant global variation. Parental and peer supports are protective factors against suicidal ideation and anxiety. Peer based interventions to enhance social connectedness and parent skills training to improve parent-child relationships may reduce suicidal ideation and anxiety. Research to inform the factors that influence country and regional level differences in adolescent mental health problems may inform preventative strategies. Funding: None

Summary: Background: Bullying victimisation is a global public health problem that has been predominantly studied in high income countries. This study aimed to estimate the population level prevalence of bullying victimisation and its association with peer and parental supports amongst adolescents across low and middle income to high income countries (LMICHICs). Methods: Data were drawn from the Global School-based Student Health Survey of school children aged 12–17 years, between 2003 and 2015, in 83 LMICHICs in the six World Health Organization (WHO) regions. We estimated the weighted prevalence of bullying victimisation at country, region and global level. We used multiple binary logistic regression models to estimate the adjusted association of age, gender, socioeconomic status, and parental support and peer support, and country level variables (GDP and government expenditure on education) with adolescent bullying victimisation. Findings: Of the 317,869 adolescents studied, 151,036 (48%) were males, and 166,833 (52%) females. The pooled prevalence of bullying victimisation on one or more days in the past 30 days amongst adolescents aged 12–17 years was 30·5% (95% CI: 30·2–31·0%). The highest prevalence was observed in the Eastern Mediterranean Region (45·1%, 44·3–46·0%) and African region (43·5%, 43·0–44·3%), and the lowest in Europe (8·4%, 8·0–9·0%). Bullying victimisation was associated with male gender (OR: 1·21; 1·11–1·32), below average socio-economic status (OR: 1·47, 1·35–1·61), and younger age (OR: 1·11, 1·0–1·24). Higher levels of peer support (0·51, 0·46–0·57), higher levels of parental support (e.g., understanding children's problems (OR: 0·85, 0·77–0·95), and knowing the importance of free time spent with children (OR: 0·77, 0·70–0·85)), were significantly associated with a reduced risk of bullying victimisation. Interpretations: Bullying victimisation is prevalent amongst adolescents globally, particularly in the Eastern Mediterranean and African regions. Parental and peer supports are protective factors against bullying victimisation. A reduction in bullying victimisation may be facilitated by family and peer based interventions aimed at increasing social connectedness of adolescents.

Abstract Background Leptospirosis morbidity and mortality rates in China have decreased since the 2000s. Further analyses of the spatiotemporal and demographic changes occurring in the last decade and its implication on estimates of disease burden are required to inform intervention strategies. In this study, we quantified the epidemiological shift and geographical heterogeneity in the burden of leptospirosis during 2005–2015 in China. Methods We used reported leptospirosis case data from 1st January 2005 to 31st of December 2015 that routinely collected by the China Information System for Disease Control and Prevention (CISDCP) to analyze the epidemiological trend and estimate the burden in terms of disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) over space, time, and demographical groups. Results A total of 7763 cases were reported during 2005–2015. Of which, 2403 (31%) cases were the laboratory-confirmed case. Since 2005, the notified incidence rate was gradually decreased (P 0.05). During 2005–2015, we estimated a total of 10 313 DALYs were lost due to leptospirosis comprising a total of 1804 years-lived with disability (YLDs) and 8509 years-life lost (YLLs). Males had the highest burden of disease (7149 DALYs) compared to females (3164 DALYs). The highest burden estimate was attributed to younger individuals aged 10–19 years who lived in southern provinces of China. Abstract

The article presents an illegal drug detector that utilizes photonic crystal fiber (PCF). The fiber structure of the H-PCF comprises a dodecagonal core and circular air gaps in cladding areas. We have analyzed the designed terahertz (THz) frequency range utilizing the Finite Element Method (FEM) and the COMSOL Multiphysics application. The revised design has a high sensitivity in detecting amphetamine (n = 1.518) and cocaine (n = 1.5022) at a frequency of 3 THz, via detection rates of 99.43% and 99.20%, correspondingly. Furthermore, the suggested fiber, which operates at a frequency of 3 THz, has a relatively tiny confinement loss of 4.93×10-08 dB/m and 6.16×10-09 dB/m and a minimal effective material loss of construction of 0.0032 cm-1. In conclusion, it may be stated that drug misuse not only leads to immediate repercussions but also has severe and enduring impacts on human health, potentially resulting in fatality. Abstract Amid China’s 2023 policy shift toward rural revitalization and agricultural modernization driven by a substantial agricultural population and the foundational role of agriculture in the national economy, there is an urgent need for the widespread adoption of new agricultural technologies to boost production quality, efficiency, and economic development. This study examines the determinants of technology adoption in agriculture among small rural farmers, focusing on the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology framework. Using a cross-sectional survey approach and a convenience sampling method, the study ultimately collected 326 responses from rural farmers. The collected data were analyzed using a structural equation modeling method with SmartPLS 4 software. The results reveal significant determinants of the intention to use new agricultural technology and the use of new agricultural technology, with performance expectancy, effort expectancy, and hedonic motivation exhibiting positive effects. Facilitating conditions have emerged as key factors influencing both the intention and usage of new agricultural technology. Although age does not moderate any of the relationships, using years moderates the relationship between performance expectancy and intention to use new agricultural technology as well as price value and intention to use new agricultural technology. Intention to use new agricultural technology has significant and positive mediating effects on the proposed relationships. The theoretical implications of this study underscore the significance of understanding the complex interplay of determinants, moderating factors, and mediating pathways within the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology framework to advance the knowledge of agricultural technology adoption. This study provides valuable perspectives for policymakers, practitioners, and researchers dedicated to promoting the adoption of sustainable technology in the agricultural sector.

Abstract

Abstract The rapid infrastructure development and the need to house the dense population of Bangladesh drive the construction business to transform from a low-rise to a medium-rise industry. In this transformation, steel–concrete composite has been prioritized for constructing high-rise buildings. It is crucial to look at how the steel industry has developed and what the future holds for the usage of steel–concrete composition in the construction sector of Bangladesh. Also, it is critical to understand the role of reinforced cement concrete (RCC) technology in this transformation process. The current study examined import and export promotion statistics for steel, iron, and cement to get insights into the development and transformation of the construction sector. To assess the existing state and prospects of the steel industry, this study also collected revenue data from the major steel companies of Bangladesh. Finally, a poll on the usage of steel–concrete composite construction has been conducted to better understand the public opinions about the steel industry. Findings from the Export Promotion Bureau (EPB) indicate that there has been a growing popularity of steel structures in the last 10 years boosting the financial revenue of Bangladesh. Import data revealed a moderately strong relationship, with cement imports accounting for 37.4% of the variation in steel and iron imports. Insights into public opinion show a generally positive attitude toward adopting steel–concrete composites, with 17.6% of the variation in willingness to pay premiums explained by factors like high cost, longevity, and cost-effectiveness. Nevertheless, the data suggests that cement has been more frequently utilized in the construction sector than steel. The findings of this study provide valuable information on the opportunities and challenges encountered by the steel industry. This information can aid policymakers in making informed investment and strategic planning decisions that will support the economic development of the country.

Abstract

Creep-induced cavitation is an important failure mechanism in steel components operating at high temperature. Robust techniques are required to observe and quantify creep cavitation. In this paper, the use of two complementary analysis techniques: small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), and quantitative metallography, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), is reported. The development of creep cavities that is accumulated under uniaxial load has been studied as a function of creep strain and life fraction, by carrying out interrupted tests on two sets of creep test specimens that are prepared from a Type-316H austenitic stainless steel reactor component. In order to examine the effects of pre-strain on creep damage formation, one set of specimens was subjected to a plastic pre-strain of 8%, and the other set had no pre-strain. Each set of specimens was subjected to different loading and temperature conditions, representative of those of current and future power plant operation. Cavities of up to 300 nm in size are quantified by using SANS, and their size distribution, as a function of determined creep strain. Cavitation increases significantly as creep strain increases throughout creep life. These results are confirmed by quantitative metallography analysis.

Abstract

Background: The recovery of ischemic skin flaps is a major concern in clinical settings. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of engineered exosomes derived from FGF1 pre-conditioned adipose-derived stem cells (FEXO) on ischemic skin flaps. Method: 6 patients who suffered from pressure ulcer at stage 4 and underwent skin flaps surgery were recruited in this study to screen the potential targets of ischemic skin flaps in FGF family. FGF1 was co-incubated with adipose stem cells, and ultracentrifugation was applied to extract FEXO. Transcriptome sequencing analysis was used to determine the most effective microRNA in FEXO. Animal skin flaps models were established in our study to verify the effects of FEXO. Immunofluorescence (IF), western blotting (WB) and other molecular strategy were used to evaluate the effects and mechanism of FEXO. Results: FGF1 was expected to be the therapeutic and diagnostic target of ischemic skin flaps, but there is still some deficiency in rescuing skin flaps. FEXO significantly improved the viability of RPSFs and endothelial cells by inhibiting oxidative stress and alleviating apoptosis and pyroptosis through augmenting autophagy flux. In addition, FEXO inhibited the over-activated inflammation responses. Transcriptome sequencing analysis showed that miR-183-5p was significantly elevated in FEXO, and inhibiting miR-183-5p resulted in impaired protective effects of autophagy in skin flaps. The exosomal miR-183-5p markedly enhanced cell viability, inhibited oxidative stress and alleviated apoptosis and pyroptosis in endothelial cells by targeting GPR137 through Pi3k/Akt/mTOR pathway, indicating that GPR137 could also be a therapeutic target of ischemic skin flap. It was also notabale that FGF1 increased the number of exosomes by upregulating VAMP3, which may be a promising strategy for clinical translation. Abstract

IntroductionMathematics anxiety (MA) is a distinct negative emotional state or trait that individuals experience when confronted with mathematical problems in everyday life and academic contexts. This study aims to identify the key predictors of MA among secondary-level students in Bangladesh.MethodsUtilizing a quantitative cross-sectional research design, data were collected from 486 students across 89 institutions. Later, the data were analyzed using Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS-SEM).ResultsThe findings revealed that math related negative past experiences (β = 0.241, t = 4.914, p < 0.001) and a perceived lack of teacher support (β = 0.234, t = 5.440, p < 0.001) significantly contribute to students’ low self-efficacy in mathematics. This low self-efficacy is further influenced by negative attitudes and test anxiety, ultimately leading to increased MA (β = 0.694, t = 22.695, p < 0.001). Additionally, cognitive challenges, particularly working memory difficulties, directly affect MA (β = 0.110, t = 2.659, p = 0.008). The study also found that negative attitudes (β = 0.347, t = 9.063, p < 0.001) and test anxiety (β = 0.251, t = 5.913, p < 0.001) independently exacerbate MA. Moreover, a lack of motivation in learning mathematics is directly influenced by this elevated level of MA (β = 0.384, t = 9.939, p < 0.001).DiscussionTaken together, the study proposes several key recommendations and policy implications to inform the development of synchronized policies by educational authorities aimed at combatting, reducing MA among secondary-level students in Bangladesh and similar contexts.

Abstract

Natural products have perennially served as a cornerstone for the genesis of novel medicinal compounds. Most clinical therapeutics originate from ancestral herbal remedies and their formulations. Scholars and practitioners have always aimed to extract better remedies to treat various ailments. Genus Ficus, consisting of over 800 varieties, is a substantial tree native to tropical regions, characterized by its deciduous or evergreen nature. Various parts of this plant, including its bark, roots, leaves, fruit, and latex, find extensive use in treating a multitude of ailments. This review aims to update the ethnopharmacology, chemistry, and potential clinical applications of extracts and active ingredients from the ten most prevalent Ficus species. Major databases like Chemical Abstracts, ScienceDirect, SciFinder, PubMed, Scopus, etc. have all been used to generate references for this review. According to a thorough review of the literature, the many species of Ficus have a wide range of biological properties, including antioxidant, cytotoxic, antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal, anti-inflammatory, antiallergenic, antiasthmatic, larvicidal, antiplasmodial, antidiabetic, hepatoprotective and cardioprotective activity. A bunch of different secondary metabolites, such as flavonoids, saponins, alkaloids, tannins, phenolic acids, phytosterols, etc., were also reported, which can be responsible for exerted medicinal actions as well as play a crucial role in the field of new drug discovery and development. However, most species are missing well-controlled and double-blind clinical investigations. Thus, we still recommend further extensive exploration of this miraculous genus.

Abstract

There are about 33,000 different species of fish and they are visually identified using variety of traits, i.e., size and shape of body, head's size and shape, skin pattern, fin pattern, mouth pattern, scale pattern, and eye pattern etc. In traditional manner, identifying these fish species is always difficult with necked eye. Identification and detection of fish species from images using deep learning and computer vision based techniques is challenging topic among researchers worldwide as an interesting problem. Automatic fish species classification and detection has practical importance for both smart aquaculture and fish industry. AI powered deep learning and computer vision based automatic fish species recognition and sorting system becoming significant factor for making aquaculture industry more productive and sustainable. However, the performance of machine learning classifier greatly depends on the size of image dataset and the quality of the images in the dataset. This article demonstrate BD-Freshwater-Fish, an image dataset contain 4389 images of 12 different species captured in natural environment using HD mobile camera from local fish market of Sylhet and Jessore district of Bangladesh. Twelve (12) different data classes are: Rohu (Labeo rohita), Catla (Catla catla), Mrigal (Cirrhinus cirrhosus), Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), Common Carp (Cyprinus carpio), Mirror Carp (Cyprinus carpio var. specularis), Black Rohu (Labeo calbasu), Silver Carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix), Striped Catfish (Pangasius pangasius), Nile Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), Long-whiskered Catfish (Sperata aor), Freshwater Shark (Wallago attu) has been included in the dataset with a different number of images of different species. Abstract

Denim has been elevated to the status of ''classic'' in the modern fashion cycle by numerous advancements and development efforts over the past few decades. Consumers today are interested in clothing comfort, environmental sustainability, and aesthetic appeals in addition to newborn designs and novel looks. Previous research works had only focused on evaluating the physical properties of denim samples after applying existing hazardous dry processes (whiskering, sandblasting, and PP {Potassium permanganate} spray), but those don’t portray scientific assessment regarding environmental impact assessment, chromatic values and vintage effects of denim. This research work explores sustainable alternative dry garment processes using sodium hydroxide and heat treatment with a view to achieving highly fashionable worn-out effects on sulfur-dyed denim, focusing on color fading. Process variables such as different sodium hydroxide concentrations (5 g/L, 10 g/L, 15 g/L, and 20 g/L) and heat treatment by stenter machine operating temperatures (140°C, 160°C, 180°C, and 200 °C) are used to conducting the research. Addressing a research gap, it evaluates Environmental Impact Measurement scores using EIM Software and chromatic parameters using Datacolor Spectrophotometer. Other examining factors such as color fastness (CF), and physical characteristics such as tensile and tear strength, shrinkage%, air permeability, and contact angle are evaluated. The alternative methods of dry process using are environmentally sustainable with scores of 7 and 1 (EIM software’s scoring system implies 0–33 for low impact, 34–66 for medium impact, and >66 for high impact) respectively. Evaluations indicate decreasing patterns in color strength and chromaticity with higher sodium hydroxide concentration like 20 g/L and heat treatment, leading to a light black or grayish hue at 200°C. Conversely, lower concentrations (5 g/L, 10 g/L) and temperatures (140°C and 160°C) show increased a* (red-green), b* (yellow-blue) values, and r% (reflectance %). Fabrics treated with lower sodium hydroxide concentrations and temperatures exhibit weaker resistance to color change and staining. The study provides a comprehensive assessment using metrics like EIM score, color strength, chromaticity, hue angle, CIELAB color space, reflectance%, and color fastness tests, including rubbing, washing, and light fastness.

Abstract

Tropical cyclones, including surge inundation, are a common event in the coastal regions of Bangladesh. The surge washes out the area within a very short period and remains in flooded condition for several days. Spatial analysis to understand the surge susceptibility level can assist the cyclone management system. Surge susceptibility analysis could be one of the most essential parts of disaster risk reduction through which cyclone vulnerability can be minimized. A Geographic Information Systems-based analytical hierarchy process (AHP) multi-criteria analysis and bivariate frequency ratio (FR) techniques were conducted to understand the surge susceptibility level of a cyclone-prone area on the Bangladesh coast. A total of 10 criteria were considered influential to surge flooding, i.e. Topographic Wetness Index, elevation, wind velocity, slope, distance from sea and rivers, drainage density, Land Use and Land Cover, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index, precipitation, and soil types. The final surge susceptibility maps were categorized into five classes, i.e. very low, low, moderate, high, and very high. Conferring to these susceptibility classes, policymakers can make decisions for future land use management and disaster risk reduction activities. According to this research, AHP showed better precision (Receiver Operating Characteristic) than FR for surge susceptibility prediction on the Bangladesh coast.

Abstract

To reduce the adverse impact of synthetic bags on carbon footprints, greenhouse gases, and global warming, there is a rising demand for biodegradable and sustainable packaging material, especially for packing crops and food. Bags made from natural fibers are the finest alternative to synthetic ones. Jute is one of the most in-demand natural fibers in the packaging industry. Nevertheless, the traditional production method is more process-oriented, requiring more time and resulting in more expensive bags. Bowing problems induced by side seams cause sack bundles to roll during transport, which is also another issue. This study describes a unique process for producing seamless jute bags and sacks, eliminating the current processes in favor of fewer processes. A mechanical left-handed dobby loom with a cutting arrangement for separating the sacks produced continuous sack weaving. The tensile and seam strength of the produced sacks were evaluated and found to be comparable to those of commercially available sacks. In addition, one-way ANOVA and regression studies demonstrated the results significance. This developed method will increase productivity while reducing energy consumption, resulting in inexpensive packaging products and a solution to the transportation issue.

Background Ocular disorders can arise in the advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD) for various reasons, including uraemia, biochemical abnormalities, hypertension and inadequate haemodialysis treatment.Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study at the Pediatric Nephrology Department, both inpatient and outpatient, of from January 2020 to July 2021. The study aimed to identify and compare ophthalmological changes among children at different stages of CKD to assess potential visual threats. A total of 92 children with advanced-stage CKD, aged 5–18 years, meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria, were included in the study. Comprehensive assessments, including medical history, physical examinations, relevant tests and detailed ophthalmological examinations, were conducted.Results The mean age of the participants was 12.1±3.68 years. Most of the children were boys (66%). Abstract

Domestic e-retailers acknowledge logistics service quality (LSQ) as a critical success factor in business excellence. However, exponential growth in cross-border e-commerce (CBEC) requires a re-evaluation of the relationship between LSQ and consumers repurchase intention. By integrating the technology acceptance model, this study investigates the impact of LSQ on repurchase intention based on the LSQ (experience)–satisfaction–repurchase intention consequence chain. Data were collected from 466 Chinese consumers who had engaged in online shopping with international vendors. Partial least squares structural equation modeling was employed to examine the effectiveness of the research model. The results reveal that delivery service quality, return logistics services, and cross-border online shopping experiences significantly influence customer satisfaction. Nevertheless, the relationships between delivery information service, delivery stability, price fairness, and customer satisfaction are not supported. Price fairness, cross-border online shopping experience, and customer satisfaction positively affect cross-border repurchase intentions. Additionally, customer satisfaction mediates the relationships between LSQ, price fairness, cross-border online shopping experience, and repurchase intention. The novelty of this study lies in its focus on the cross-border dimension, introducing additional factors, such as price fairness and cross-border online shopping experiences, including other variables that affect LSQ and customer satisfaction, in contrast to domestic e-commerce. This study contributes to the literature by providing new insights into the complex dynamics of LSQ in CBEC and highlighting the nuanced role of customer satisfaction as a mediator in different market contexts. It offers empirical findings and valuable insights into the multiple dimensions of LSQ and customer satisfaction, thus contributing to the body of knowledge.

Abstract

The emerging class of instance-optimized systems has shown potential to achieve high performance by specializing to a specific data and query workloads. Particularly, Machine Learning (ML) techniques have been applied successfully to build various instance-optimized components (e.g., learned indexes). This paper investigates to leverage ML techniques to enhance the performance of spatial indexes, particularly the R-tree, for a given data and query workloads. As the areas covered by the R-tree index nodes overlap in space, upon searching for a specific point in space, multiple paths from root to leaf may potentially be explored. In the worst case, the entire R-tree could be searched. In this paper, we define and use the overlap ratio to quantify the degree of extraneous leaf node accesses required by a range query. The goal is to enhance the query performance of a traditional R-tree for high-overlap range queries as they tend to incur long running-times. We introduce a new AI-tree that transforms the search operation of an R-tree into a multi-label classification task to exclude the extraneous leaf node accesses. Then, we augment a traditional R-tree to the AI-tree to form a hybrid "AI+R"-tree. The "AI+R"-tree can automatically differentiate between the high- and low-overlap queries using a learned model. Thus, the "AI+R"-tree processes high-overlap queries using the AI-tree, and the low-overlap queries using the R-tree. Abstract

Delay-tolerant networking (DTN) protocols play a vital role in enabling reliable communication in space networks, which are characterized by long delays, frequent disconnections, and high error rates. This research utilizes GNS3 simulations to evaluate the performance of DTN protocols under conditions that closely resemble deep-space communications. The study focuses on key features of DTN like store-and-forward mechanism and custody transfer to examine their effectiveness in maintaining data integrity and successful delivery during intermittent connectivity. The findings of this research demonstrate the remarkable resilience of DTN protocols, achieving a robust delivery ratio exceeding 90% even in scenarios with prolonged delays and random link failures. While latency is inherent to DTN due to its store-and-forward operations, the results suggest them to remain manageable within the constraints of space communications. Additionally, the research highlights the adaptive nature of DTN’s throughput optimization strategies, which dynamically adjust to network conditions, maximizing data transmission efficiency during periods of connectivity. The results of this study affirm the viability and resilience of DTN protocols for space missions, laying a solid foundation for their application in future space communication research. Furthermore, the potential applications of DTN in terrestrial environments during challenging network conditions especially in rural areas and disaster-stricken regions are stressed. The study also highlights the importance of continued research efforts in optimizing the scalability, resource management, and security aspects of DTN protocols, as such advancements will further lead to increased capabilities and robust communication infrastructures for both space and terrestrial networks.

Abstract

Agriculture has a crucial role in both the economy and food supply. However, the frequent occurrence of plant diseases can have a significant negative influence on the production of foods. Timely detection of a disease is important for its effective management, e.g., targeted use of pesticides. Conventional Plant Disease Detection (PDD) methods are manual, slow, tedious, and prone to errors, thereby increasing the risk of significant yield losses. Recently, various data-driven approaches, including Deep Learning and Computer Vision-based approaches, have been explored for PDD. However, the scarcity of large and annotated datasets and the limited scalability of these approaches have prompted researchers to turn to the Self-Supervised Learning (SSL) approach. In this review, we provide the very first conceptual grounding for the SSL approach in PDD. By reviewing a large body of recent related works in the literature, we thoroughly analyse and categorise them into generative, predictive, contrastive and hybrid SSL models. Moreover, this review analyses various recent datasets and performance metrics used in these models. Finally, we explain the research challenges and key research directions aimed at advancing PDD through the SSL approach.

Abstract

Due to shallow root systems, potato is a particularly drought-sensitive crop. To counteract these limitations, the application of plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPMs) is discussed as a strategy to improve nutrient acquisition and biotic and abiotic stress resilience. However, initial root colonization by PGPMs, in particular, can be affected by stress factors that negatively impact root growth and activity or the survival of PGPMs in the rhizosphere. In this study, perspectives for the use of commercial silicate-based soil conditioners (SCs) supposed to improve soil water retention were investigated. The SC products were based on combinations with lignocellulose polysaccharides (Sanoplant® = SP) or polyacrylate (Geohumus® = GH). It was hypothesized that SC applications would support beneficial plant–inoculant interactions (arbuscular mycorrhiza, AM: Rhizophagus irregularis MUCL41833, and Pseudomonas brassicacearum 3Re2-7) on a silty loam soil–sand mixture under water-deficit conditions (6–12 weeks at 15–20% substrate water-holding capacity, WHC). Although no significant SC effects on WHC and total plant biomass were detectable, the SC-inoculant combinations increased the proportion of leaf biomass not affected by drought stress symptoms (chlorosis, necrosis) by 66% (SP) and 91% (GH). Accordingly, osmotic adjustment (proline, glycine betaine accumulation) and ROS detoxification (ascorbate peroxidase, total antioxidants) were increased. This was associated with elevated levels of phytohormones involved in stress adaptations (abscisic, jasmonic, salicylic acids, IAA) and reduced ROS (H2O2) accumulation in the leaf tissue. In contrast to GH, the SP treatments additionally stimulated AM root colonization. Finally, the SP-inoculant combination significantly increased tuber biomass (82%) under well-watered conditions, and a similar trend was observed under drought stress, reaching 81% of the well-watered control. The P status was sufficient for all treatments, and no treatment differences were observed for stress-protective nutrients, such as Zn, Mn, or Si. By contrast, GH treatments had negative effects on tuber biomass, associated with excess accumulation of Mn and Fe in the leaf tissue close to toxicity levels. The findings suggest that inoculation with the PGPMs in combination with SC products (SP) can promote physiological stress adaptations and AM colonization to improve potato tuber yield, independent of effects on soil water retention. However, this does not apply to SC products in general.
