Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a frequently seen functional bowel disease. Although not lifethreatening, it impairs quality of life and leads to economic losses. IBS symptoms are widespread in dialysis patients. Psychopathological disorders are known to increase in both IBS and dialysis patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of IBS, IBS-related factors, and psychopathological disorders in patients.One hundred fifty patients followed-up in hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD) programs were included in this prospective study. Patients were divided into groups with and without diagnoses of IBS based on the Rome-III diagnostic criteria. The Symptom Check List Revised (SCL90-R) test was then applied to the patients. Patients with and without IBS were compared according to the scores obtained from the questionnaire.IBS was determined in 59 (39.3%) of the dialysis patients. The prevalence of IBS was significantly higher in women (P = .030). The presence of coronary artery disease (CAD) and use of erythropoietin (EPO) were significantly higher in patients with IBS (P = .029, P = .031). Somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, interpersonal sensitivity, depression, anxiety, phobic anxiety, psychoticism, and additional items were also higher in patients with IBS. Subscale scores for somatization, depression, and additional parameters in dialysis patients with IBS were above the threshold values for screening.IBS is common in dialysis patients. The presence of CAD or use of EPO were frequently observed in dialysis patients with IBS, and psychopathologies in depression, somatization, and additional subparameters were also higher in these patients.

WOS: 000411484400007, Objective: The incidence of colorectal cancer in developed countries has been found to increase with age. Early diagnosis and screening decrease the mortality rates in colorectal cancer. This study aimed to use inflammatory markers neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), and red blood cell distribution width (RDW)as new biomarkers for early diagnosis and screening in patients with colorectal cancer. Materials and Methods: A total of 59 patients with colorectal cancer and 59 age-and sex-matched healthy participants were included in the study. Localization, tumor node metastasis (TNM) stage, and preoperative hemoglobin levels, neutrophil counts, lymphocyte counts, platelet counts, and RDW values were obtained from medical records. Using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, the optimal cutoff levels of the biomarkers were determined. Results: NLR, PLR, and RDW were significantly higher in patients with colorectal cancer than in healthy participants (p< 0.001). According to ROC analysis, the cutoff value for NLR was 2.05 [area under the curve (AUC): 0.740, sensitivity: 78%, specificity: 66%]; the cutoff value for PLR was 130 (AUC: 0.702, sensitivity: 65%, specificity: 72%); and the cutoff value for RDW was 14 (AUC: 0.774, sensitivity: 68%, specificity: 73%). Conclusions: NLR, PLR, and RDW were found to be significantly higher in patients with colorectal cancer than in healthy participants. Therefore, it is recommended that these additional biomarkers can be used for early diagnosis and screening of colorectal cancer.

OBJECTIVE: Hypervolemia and malnutrition are often undiagnosed risk factors for hemodialysis (HD). Our aim was to investigate the long-term effects of hypervolemia and malnutrition evaluated by bioimpedance spectroscopy (BIS) on survival. (Clinical Trials. Gov Identifier: NCT01468363). MATERIAL and METHODS: A total of 431 Prevalent HD patients were followed for 32.2±14.4 months. The patients underwent BIS measurement, a medical history was obtained, and routine tests were analyzed at the baseline and at the end of the study. Hospitalizations and complications of HD were recorded. RESULTS: The mean age was 59.4±14.6 (10-92) years with a total of 431 (53.6% males) patients of which 125 died. The percentage of diabetics was 47%, erythropoietin use 67%, and diuretic use 40%. Predialysis systolic blood pressure (BP) was 133.4±25.8 and diastolic BP 79.2±12.4 mm Hg. The rate of diabetes, and the number of hospitalizations and blood transfusions were higher in the patients who died. Diastolic BP as a clinical hypervolemia finding, BIS hypervolemia indicator of over hydration (OH), and extracellular water (ECW) were all increased, and fat tissue index as a malnutrition finding was decreased in patients who died. There were significant rates of anemia and hypoalbuminemia in this group as well. The cumulative survival was lower in hypervolemic patients as assessed by relative hydration status OH/ECW. CONCLUSION: Hypervolemia and malnutrition are the long-term mortality indicators in hemodialysis. Early diagnosis and treatment is important. Clinical findings may not be sufficient and laboratory and BIS methods can be used for diagnosis.

Objectives: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) affects as many as 5-20% of individuals worldwide and causes a reduced quality of life. Approximately 50% of IBS patients have at least one co-morbid somatic complaint and many IBS patients meet diagnostic criteria for other functional disorders. In this study we aimed to evaluate lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and erectile function in men with IBS. Material and Methods: Between January 2012 and March 2013 fifty men diagnosed with IBS in gastorenterology clinic and 50 healhty male voulanters without any gastrointestinal disorders were included in this study. After routine urological examination, the IPSS, IIEF, OAB-V8 and BECK depression scale scores of the patients were evaluated. All patients underwent uroflowmetric evaluation. Qmax values and postvoidal residual urine volumes, measured with suprapubic USG, were recorded. The results were compared statistically. Results: Mean age of the patients was 44.1+/-14.3 in group 1 and 46.76+/-8.58 in group 2. Mean Qmax values and mean postvoid residual urine volumes in group 1 and group 2 were 20.52+/-8.69, 25.4+/-38.5 cc and 19.10+/-9.23, 15.6+/-19.29 cc, respectively. Mean IPSS scores were 10.61+/-6.15 in group 1 and 10.50+/-6.08 in group 2. While mean OAB-V8 scores of the groups were 9.1+/-5.78 and 5.24+/-3.28, mean IIEF scores were 19.92+/-7.08 ve 18.92+/-7.13, respectively. Overactive bladder was determined in 48% (n=24) in group 1 and 12% (n=12) in control group. There were no statistically significant difference between groups in terms of mean age, IIEF scores, IPSS scores, mean Qmax and mean postvoidal residual urine volumes (p>0.05). Terlipressin is a synthetic vasopressin analogue that is used in the treatment of bleeding esophageal varices and hepatorenal syndrome in patients with cirrhosis. Hepatorenal syndrome is a form of renal failure seen in patients with cirrhosis, with fatal outcomes. Ischemic adverse effects related to terlipressin are rarely observed. Herein, two cases who developed ischemic skin necrosis due to terlipressin usage are presented. Terlipressin therapy was started in two cirrhotic patients with presumptive hepatorenal syndrome. During the therapy, ecchymotic and necrotic changes were observed on the scrotal regions of both patients. Skin lesions were relieved after terlipressin therapy. Biopsy results were consistent with ischemia. Even if seen rarely, possible emergence of ischemic complications must be considered.

We aimed to determine the insulin resistance in women with PCOS patients who have normal oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) and to evaluate cardiovascular risk by measuring C-reactive protein (CRP) and carotid intimae-media thickness (CIMT).A total of 34 patients and age and body mass matched 20 healthy control subjects were included to this prospective study. Both of patients and control groups were consisted of normal oral glucose tolerance test. Insulin resistance (IR) was estimated using HOMA-IR method. CRP, lipid and hormone levels were measured. CIMT was measured by Carotid Artery B-Mode ultrasonography.There was no significant difference between patients and controls in BMI, and waist circumference, lipid, TSH, LH, FSH, estradiol, and prolactin levels. Serum insulin, testosterone, DHEAS, ferritin levels and HOMA values were significantly higher in patient group. We found that 64.7% (n = 22/34) patients with PCOS had insulin resistance. Both of CIMT and CRP levels were significantly higher in the PCOS patients had BMI over 25 kg/m². CRP levels was significantly higher in the PCOS patients had waist circumference greater than 80 cm.We found insulin resistance in the women with PCOS even if OGTT was normal. Our data were similar to literature, the women with PCOS have increased risk of premature atherosclerosis and metabolic syndrome.

Diabetes mellitus (DM) is associated with platelet dysfunction. In diabetic patients, alterations in platelet functions, especially increased platelet agregation, have been suggested to cause increasing in cardiovascular morbidity and mortality or in accelaretion of athersclerotic process. In this study, we aimed to investigate the platelet aggregation response alterations and the effects of DM duration, HbA1c, treatment options among the patients with Type 2 DM. Fortyfive patients (case group; 21 male, 24 female) with Type 2 DM and forty-eight healthy individuals (control group; 22 male, 26 female) were included in this study. Platelet aggregation was determinated with Chorono-log 500 (USA) named device by using Chorono-log/ADP, Chorono-log/ collagen and Chorono-log/epinephrine kits. ADP-induced platelet aggregation was significantly higher in the case group compared with control group (p 0.05). In conclusion, our findings supported that type 2 diabetes may interfere with platelet functions without any relationship age, gender, the treatment types and the regulation levels. These findings supports that existence potential new factors or mechanism affecting platelet agregation. The subject requires more detailed studies in the future.

This study was designed to investigate the effects of propofol on sheep SO. Methods: SO rings were mounted in a tissue bath and tested for changes in isometric tension in response to propofol (10(-8)-10(-4) M) in the presence or absence of L - NAME (3 X 10(-5) M), a non-specific inhibitor of nitric oxide (NO) synthase; indomethacin (10(-5) M), an inhibitor of cyclooxygenase; glibenclamide (10(-5) M), an inhibitor of ATP-sensitive potassium channels; tetraethylammonium (3 X 10(-4) M), inhibitors of calcium-activated potassium channels; 4-aminopyridine (10(-3) M), a voltage-dependent potassium channel blocker. Furthermore, we investigated the Ca2+ antagonist feature of propofol in precontracted SO rings by CaCl2. Results: Carbachol (10(-9)-10(-5) M) induced concentration-dependent contraction responses in the SO rings. Propofol (10(-8)-10(-4) M) produced concentration-dependent relaxation on isolated SO rings precontracted by carbachol (10(-6) M). Preincubation of SO rings by L - NAME ( 3 X 10(-5) M), indomethacin (10(-5) M), glibenclamide (10(-5) M), and 4-amino-pyridine (10(-3) M) did not produce a significant alteration on propofol-induced relaxation responses (p > 0.05), while preincubation by tetraethylammonium ( 3 X 10(-4) M) significantly decreased the propofol-induced relaxation responses (p < 0.05). Propofol (10(-8)-10(-4) M) induced concentration-dependently relaxations in precontracted isolated SO rings by CaCl2. Conclusion: The results suggest that propofol induced concentration-dependent relaxations in precontracted isolated SO rings. These relaxations are independent from NO, cyclooxygenase metabolites, and opened ATP-sensitive and voltage-dependent potassium channels. Opened Ca2+-sensitive K+ channels and inhibited L- type Ca2+ channels existing in smooth muscle by propofol can contribute to these relaxations. Propofol can be beneficial as alternative drugs for obtaining selective relaxation during SO manometry after controlled clinical studies. Copyright (c) 2007 S. Karger AG, Basel and IAP.

Tumour markers are used for diagnosis, staging, evaluation of response to treatment, prognosis and detection of recurrences in clinical oncology. In this study, we aim to investigate the levels of insulin-like growth factor (IGF)-I and IGF-binding protein (IGFBP)-III in cases with oesophageal carcinoma. We investigated their possible use as tumour markers and their relation to other tumour markers. Forty patients who were diagnosed as having oesophageal carcinoma by histopathological evaluation of endoscopic biopsies between January 2003 and July 2004 and 40 healthy people as the control group were included in the study. The serum levels of tumour markers including IGF-I, IGFBP-III, carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) and carbohydrate antigen (CA) 19-9 were measured in both groups. Data were compared statistically, and the importance of IGF-I and IGFBP-III levels were investigated in cases with oesophageal carcinoma. IGF-I levels were significantly higher in patients with oesophageal carcinoma when compared with the control group (p < 0.05), whereas IGFBP-III levels were significantly lower (p < 0.05). The increase in CEA levels was not statistically significant when compared with the control group. The increase in CA 19-9 levels was statistically significant when compared with the control group (p < 0.05). No correlation was detected between levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-III and levels of CEA and CA 19-9. We suggest that the serum IGF-I level may be used as a tumour marker in oesophageal carcinoma. A low level of serum IGFBP-III is also significant in cases with oesophageal carcinoma. We believe that drugs which inhibit IGF-I function or which stimulate the function of IGFBP-III may open new horizons in extra-surgical modalities for the treatment of oesophageal cancer.

However, it is not clear whether the NLR is a useful and simple indicator of clinical activity in UC after adjusting for the other inflammatory markers. We designed a retrospective study to evaluate the role of the NLR in estimating disease severity in UC patients. The study consisted of 71 patients with UC and 140 age- and sex-matched healthy individuals (control group). The NLR, erythrocyte sedimentation rate, C-reactive protein, and white blood cell count were measured. The NLR values of the active UC group were elevated compared with those of the patients with inactive UC and the controls (2.59 + 1.47, 2.03 + 1.07, and 1.98 + 0.85, respectively; p = 0.005). The receiver operating characteristic revealed that the optimum NLR cut-off point for active UC was 2.39. A multivariable logistic analysis showed that of the parameters studied, C-reactive protein was the only parameter able to significantly discriminate active from inactive UC (B: 0.222; p = 0.017; odds ratio: 1.248; 95% confidence interval: 1.041-1.497). Giant cell arteritis is a granulomatous vasculitis characterized by medium or large sized vessel involvement. Although extracranial branches of the carotid artery are typically involved, involvement of aorta and its major branches can also be seen. Cardiac involvement has been encountered less frequently and pericardial effusion is rarely encountered. In this paper, a case has been presented in which pericardial effusion was determined during the examination and diagnosis was giant cell arteritis.

Heterogenous and/or homozygous 32 base pair deletion in CCR5 gene (CCR5 432 bpdel) leads to reduced protein expression. Objectives: In the current case control study, we aimed to compare the histopathological findings of liver to the CCR5 432 bpdel mutation profiles, expression and some other clinical findings in patients with chronic HCV infection. Materials and Methods: Multiple Strip Assay reverse hybridisation and Real Time PCR techniques were used to determine the germline CCR5 mutations and immunohistochemical technique was used to evaluate the gene expression in targer tissue biopsies. Results: Target CCR5 WT/WT, WT/ Delta 32, and Delta 32/ Delta 32 genotypes were observed in 91.4%, 8.6% and 0.0% for HCV positive patients and 98.3%, 1.7% and 0.0% for control group respectively. The histologic activity index(HAI) was significantly lower(4.0 +/- 1.0) in the mutated group than the non-mutated group (5.7 +/- 1.0). Decreased fibrosis levels were detected in HCV positive mutated group. Conclusions: Results showed that CCR5 polymorphism was more frequent in HCV positive patients than in healthy population in Turkish population. Current results also showed that mutated CCR5 signalling pathway due to CCR5-Delta32 may potentially result in subtle reduction of HCV specifity to the drug responses due to the positive impact on liver inflammation, fibrosis levels and liver destruction in HCV infection.

Introduction: Studies conducted so far on the effect of hyperthyroidism on oxidative stress (OS) have employed blood and urine samples. Exhaled Breath Condensate (EBC) is a non-invasive technique used to take sample from lungs to determine many biological indications. The aim of the present study was determine the possibility of using 8- isoprostane levels in EBC as an indicator of OS in hyperthyroid patients. Methods: The present study was performed on 42 patients with hyperthyroidism and 42 healthy control subjects. Hyperthyroid patients included patients with newly diagnosed Graves’ disease, toxic multinodular goiter and toxic adenoma. Exhaled breath condensates were collected from patients in each group using a condensing device. 8- isoprostane levels as an indicator of OS in EBC were detected via immunoassay method. Results: Hyperthyroid patients and control groups had 8-isoprostane levels of 6.08±6.31 and 1.56±0.88 pg/ml, respectively. Lupus nephritis is an infl ammation of the kidney caused by systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Lupus nephritis is a frequent complication of SLE that increases mortality and morbidity. Minimal glomerular lesions, mesangial proliferative, focal proliferative, membranous and diffuse glomerulonephritis can be seen in renal biopsies of patients with lupus nephritis. It has been reported that non-lupus nephritis can also rarely occur in SLE. While non-lupus nephritis cases usually manifest as focal segmental glomerulosclerosis, they have been seen rarely as IgA nephropathy. WOS: 000328273000092, PubMed ID: 24175847, In the current study we aimed to show the common YMDD motif mutations in viral polymerase gene in chronic hepatitis B patients during lamivudine and adefovir therapy. Forty-one serum samples obtained from chronic hepatitis B patients (24 male, 17 female; age range: 34-68 years) were included in the study. HBV-DNA was extracted from the peripheral blood of the patients using an extraction kit (Invisorb, Instant Spin DNA/RNA Virus Mini Kit, Germany). A line probe assay and direct sequencing analyses (INNO-LIPA HBV DR v2; INNOGENETICS N.V, Ghent, Belgium) were applied to determine target mutations of the viral polymerase gene in positive HBV-DNA samples. A total of 41 mutations located in 21 different codons were detected in the current results. In 17 (41.5%) patients various point mutations were detected leading to lamivudin, adefovir and/or combined drug resistance. Wild polymerase gene profiles were detected in 24 (58.5%) HBV positive patients of the current cohort. Eight of the 17 samples (19.5%) having rtM204V/I/A missense transition and/or transversion point mutations and resistance to lamivudin. Six of the the mutated samples (14.6%) having rtL180M missense transversion mutation and resistance to combined adefovir and lamivudin. Three of the mutated samples (7.5%) having rtG215H by the double base substituation and resistance to adefovir. Three of the mutated samples (7.5%) having codon rtL181W due to the missense transversion point mutations and showed resistance to combined adefovir and lamivudin. Unreported novel point mutations were detected in the different codons of polymerase gene region in the current HBV positive cohort from Turkish population. The current results provide evidence that rtL180M and rtM204V/I/A mutations of HBV-DNA may be associated with a poor antiviral response and HBV chronicity during conventional therapy in Turkish patients.

Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHC) disrupts vascular structure and function, no matter the underlying causes. The risk of development of vascular disease is greater in diabetic patients with hyperhomocysteinemia than in patients with normal homocystein levels. The aim of the study was to investigate whether there are differences of homocystein levels in dipper and non-dippers patients with type 2 DM. Subjects and methods: We compared 50 patients (33 females, 17 males) with type 2 DM and 35 healthy individuals (18 females, 17 males 1 in a control group. Ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed and homocysteine levels were measured in all patients. Results: We found that the percentage of non-dipper pattern was 72% in patients with type 2 DM and 57% in control group. In diabetic and control individuals, homocystein levels were higher in non-dipper (respectively 13.4 +/- 8.1 mu mol/L and 11.8 +/- 5 mu mol/L) than in dipper subjects (respectively, 11.8 +/- 5.8 mu mol/L and 10.1 +/- 4.2 mu mol/L), but there was no significant difference between the two groups (respectively, p = 0.545, p = 0.294). Conclusion: In both groups, homocystein levels were higher in non-dipper than in dipper participants, but there was no significant difference between the groups. High homocystein levels and the non-dipper pattern increases cardiovascular risk. WOS: 000302272100023, Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the morbidity and mortality of cytoreductive surgery (CRS) plus hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) and early postoperative intraperitoneal chemotherapy (EPIC) with closed abdomen technique in the treatment of peritoneal surface malignancies. Material and Methods: Twenty-six patients (8 with ovarian cancer, 7 peritoneal mesothelioma, 6 colorectal cancer, 3 uterine sarcoma, 1 peritoneal carcinoma and 1 with gastric cancer) underwent 27 procedures. Peritonectomy was performed with complete removal of all the involved visceral and parietal peritoneum. HIPEC was performed with the closed abdominal technique using preheated (42.5 degrees C) perfusate for 60 minutes. EPIC was continued for postoperative 5 days. Results: All patients underwent resection of the lesions. Total pentonectomy was performed in 12 patients, while subtotal or partial peritonectomy was carried out in 14 according to the spread of carcinomatosis. Completeness of cytoreduction score of our patients was 0 in 18 patients, 1 in 6 patients and 2 in 2 patients. Major morbidity developed in 7 patients (27%). CRS+HIPEC+EPIC yielded acceptable morbidity and mortality rates. Of the 26 patients, 20 (77%) were alive without evidence of disease with a mean follow-up period of 13 6 months. Overall 1 year survival was 60%. Conclusion: Cytoreductive approach combined with intraperitoneal chemotherapy prolongs survival in selected patients with peritoneal carcinomatosis (PC) with acceptable morbidity and mortality.

L-carnitine deficiency may cause changes of NBP by leading to hyperglycemia, insulin resistance and endothelial dysfunction in patients with type-2 DM. The purpose of the study was to investigate whether there is a difference in levels of L-carnitine in dipper and nondippers patients with type 2 DM. Methods: This is a cross-sectional observational cohort study. We compared the 50 (33 females, 17 males) patients with type 2 DM and the 35 healthy persons (18 females, 17 males) as a control group. In all cases, ambulatory blood pressure monitoring (ABPM) was performed and L-carnitine was measured. The independent samples t test, Chi-square test, Mann-Whitney U test and Pearson correlation analysis were used in the statistical evaluation of data. WOS: 000284798000009, Objective: Markers of chronic inflammation, such as high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) or tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) and interleukin (IL)-6, are predictive for cardiovascular mortality and morbidity in patients with chronic renal failure. Leptin stimulates angiogenesis and accelerates vascular calcification and it plays an active role in the process of atherosclerotic disease. This study investigated the relationship between leptin and inflammatory markers (hs-CRP,TNF-alpha ve IL-6) and leptin as an inflammatory marker in dialysis patients. Material and Methods: We examined the relationship of serum leptin levels with inflammatory markers in dialyzed patients. Serum CRP or TNF-alpha, IL-6 and leptin levels were determined as well as other metabolic parameters. Correlation studies and multivariate regression analysis were performed among variables. Results: Our patients showed elevated serum leptin and inflammatory markers. Serum leptin levels were positively correlated with CRP, TNF-alpha, IL-6 and body mass index (BMI). Serum CRP levels were directly related to leptin levels. Conclusion: Both hemodialysis and continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis patients showed high levels of chronic inflammation markers. Serum leptin levels were elevated in dialysis patients and significantly correlated with inflammatory markers.

We aimed to examine the relationship of serum leptin levels with BMD values in dialysed patients. We also assessed whether leptin is a significant predictor of BMD in haemodialysed patients. Materials and Methods: Leptin levels were studied using commercially available kits and BMD values were calculated using dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) at femoral neck and distal radius in 74 (30 men and 44 women) haemodialysis patients. Results: BMD values at the femoral neck and distal radius did not differ significantly between the 2 genders. BMD at the distal radius correlated positively with bone alkaline phosphatase (BAP) (r =0.503, P=0.005) in male patients and correlated positively with phosphorus (r =0.343, P= 0.02) in female patients. The time on dialysis treatment was longer in men (59 +/- 48 vs 44 +/- 41) but the difference was not statistically significant. Leptin levels were negatively correlated with BNID at the distal radius (r=-0.250 and P=0.03) in all patients. Serum leptin levels were also correlated with body mass index (BMI) in all the patients (r = 0.749 and P=0.001) and in both genders (r=0.653 and P=0.001 in women, r=0.704 and P= 0.001 in men). In multivariate regression analysis, it was found that leptin level was not an independent determinant of BMD at all skeleton sites measured. Conclusions: There was significant difference between the 2 genders with reference to leptin levels, BMI, phosphorus and creatinine. Serum leptin levels are not significant predictors of BNID in the current study.

To describe the pattern of mushroom poisoning in adults.We investigated patients presenting at the Emergency Room, Medical School Hospital, Cumhuriyet University, Turkey between 1999 and 2003 with complaints of mushroom poisoning. They were kept under observation in the emergency unit and Anesthesia Department intensive care unit. We evaluated the demographical features of the patients, laboratory data, vital signs, and applied treatment and results.Seventy-eight patients aged between 19-72 (40.27 +/- 16.09) were studied, 52 were females (67%), and 26 were males (33%). It was established that 90% (70) of the patients had picked wild mushrooms, and 67.9% (53) had done so in springtime. Methods of cooking were as follows: 30 patients (38.4%) grilled the mushrooms, 28 patients (35.8%) stir fried, and 20 patients (25.6%) consumed mushrooms uncooked. Onset of symptoms was mostly (43.5%) within the first hour of consumption. The most common (42.3%) symptoms were gastrointestinal complaints. Upon examining laboratory results, 17.9% revealed variations in hematological parameters, impairment in renal functions in 6 patients (7.6%), hematuria in 10 patients (12.8%) and 15.3% had primarily elevated liver enzymes. Seventy-four patients (97%) completely recovered and were discharged. However, 2 patients (2.8%) who consumed raw mushrooms died due to acute hepatic failure. There was a 20-year-old patient at week 31 of her first pregnancy who had consumed uncooked wild mushrooms. She developed gastrointestinal symptoms and mild loss of consciousness within the first half hour. She received quadruple therapy and completely recovered.The results of the study indicated that the public, as well as the cultivators, were rather unconcerned and uneducated regarding this issue. Efforts aimed at overcoming this problem will decrease the number of mushroom poisoning cases, will help to save on treatment costs, and more importantly, reduce patient mortality.

The pathophysiology of migraine and other headaches is still unknown, and research is mostly done on neurotransmitter, biochemical and vascular mechanisms. The aim of this study was to examine the role of antioxidant enzymes in the pathophysiology of headache in the interictal period of the pain process.In this study, glutathione peroxidase, catalase and superoxide dismutase enzyme activities were investigated in 88 cases, which included 11 migraine cases with aura, 17 migraine without aura, 32 chronic type tension headache and 28 control cases.In migraine cases, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase enzyme activities were statistically lower than in the tension headache and control groups. The differences between tension-type headache and control groups were found statistically insignificant.Low intraerythrocytes, superoxide dismutase and glutathione peroxidase levels may play an important role in the etiology of migraine.

Aim. Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is a chronic, progressive, inflammatory disease. Oxidative stress and airway inflammation are its main pathophysiologic components. In this study, our aim was to investigate the effect of an angiotensin receptor blocker (ARB) telmisartan which also exerts antiinflammatory effects on inflammation and oxidative stress in COPD. Method. The study group consisted of 50 stable COPD patients including 25 telmisartan users. Exhaled breath condensate (EBC) samples of the cases were collected using an EBC collecting device (Ecoscreen, Jaeger, Germany). EBC samples were analyzed and 8-isoprostane levels were measured using an enzyme immunoassay method (Cayman Chemical Co. Michigan, USA). Results. Any intergroup difference as for mean age, distribution of gender and smoking were not found.
