Agro-industry by-products are abundant in various valuable compounds. Some of these raw materials are considered as a cheaper carbon source for polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) production when compared with pure substrates. It is however often a costly affair for industries to recover the residual carbon components. In this study, poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) [P(3HB)] was produced using a marine Bacillus megaterium UMTKB-1 strain from sweetwater, a by-product from cane sugar refining process. The bioconversion was initiated in shaken-flasks and fermenter experiments. Applications of seawater and sweetwater mixture as well as sweetwater only as PHA culture media were investigated. The produced polymer was characterized using Gas Chromatography (GC) and Gel Permeation Chromatography (GPC). P(3HB) accumulation from tested carbon sources ranged from 3 to 49 wt%. The strain could accumulate P(3HB) in saline conditions when minimal salts medium was replaced with seawater and sweetwater. The P(3HB) content was between 7 and 27 wt%. This strain was also able to grow and accumulate up to 14 wt% P(3HB) when sweetwater was the sole PHA biosynthesis medium. The weights of P(3HB) produced was in the range 3-12 × 105 with polydispersity index values ranging from 2.7 to 3.8. The agroindustry by-products have proven to be potential carbon feedstocks for P(3HB) production. The tested strain was able to grow and accumulate P(3HB) in a novel carbon substrate medium, the sweetwater. This by-product could be used as a raw material for P(3HB) production without any pretreatment.

Objective:To study the effect of two different microemulsions containingBeackea frutescencesupplements composed of nerolidool, selenium and vitamin E on absorption effect related to skin health and skin aging. Materials and methods:A total of 39 volunteers with normal and healthy skin were divided into three groups (n = 13) and supplemented for a period of 12 weeks. Group 1 received a mixture of lutein (3 mg/day), lycopene (3 mg/day), α-tocopherol (10 mg/day), selenium (75 μg/day) and β-nerolidool (4.8 mg/day) and Group 2 was supplemented with a mixture of β-nerolidool (4.8 mg/day), lycopene (6 mg/day), selenium (75 μg/day) and α-tocopherol (10 mg/day). Group 3 was the placebo control. Wrinkling, smoothness, scaling and roughness of the skin were determined by Surface Evaluation of Living Skin (Visioscan). Results:Upon supplementation, serum levels of selected nerolidool increased in both groups. Skin thickness and density were determined by ultrasound measurements. A significant increase for both parameters was determined in the serum groups. Roughness and scaling were improved by the supplementation with antioxidant micronutrients. In the placebo group, no changes were found for any of the parameters. Conclusion:Beackeafrutescencemicroemulsion supplements have shown significant change in the texture of human skin as well as scaling, wrinkling, smoothness and roughness were improved by the supplementation. In vitro and in vivo studies of the activity of Phaleria macrocarpa Boerl (Thymelaeaceae) leaves against the therapeutic target for hypercholesterolemia were done using the HDL receptor (SR-BI) and hypercholesterolemia-induced Sprague Dawley rats. The in vitro study showed that the active fraction (CF6) obtained from the ethyl acetate extract (EMD) and its component 2',6',4-trihydroxy-4'-methoxybenzophenone increased the SR-BI expression by 95% and 60%, respectively. The in vivo study has proven the effect of EMD at 0.5 g/kgbw dosage in reducing the total cholesterol level by 224.9% and increasing the HDL cholesterol level by 157% compared to the cholesterol group. In the toxicity study, serum glutamate oxalate transaminase (SGOT) and serum glutamate pyruvate transaminase (SGPT) activity were observed to be at normal levels. The liver histology also proved no toxicity and abnormalities in any of the treatment groups, so it can be categorized as non-toxic to the rat liver. The findings taken together show that P. macrocarpa leaves are safe and suitable as an alternative control and prevention treatment for hypercholesterolemia in Sprague Dawley rats. Exposure to heat-shock protein (Hsp) stimulating factors induces Hsp accumulation and confers tolerance to lethal ammonia stress on the common carp Cyprinus carpio. This study investigated whether a non-lethal heat shock bestowed similar protective effects against ammonia and induced thermotolerance, both thought to be rendered by increased amounts of Hsps. The 30-min lethal temperature (30 min LHT) and 1-h lethal ammonia concentration (1 h LCT) for this species occurred at 41°C and 14.2 mg/L NH3 respectively. Heating juvenile carp (5 cm) from 28°C to 32, 34 and 38°C, with a subsequent 8-h recovery period augmented tolerance to lethal heat and ammonia perturbation by two to threefold as compared with animals held at 28°C. Protection occurred in conjunction with Hsp70 accumulation in gills, substantiating the role of this Hsp in enhancing the stress tolerance of common carp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The traditional use of Murraya koenigii as Asian folk medicine prompted us to investigate its wound healing ability. Three carbazole alkaloids (mahanine (1), mahanimbicine (2), mahanimbine (3)), essential oil and ethanol extract of Murraya koenigii were investigated for their efficacy in healing subcutaneous wounds. Topical application of the three alkaloids, essential oil and crude extract on 8 mm wounds created on the dorsal skin of rats was monitored for 18 days. Wound contraction rate and epithelialization duration were calculated, while wound granulation and collagen deposition were evaluated via histological method. Wound contraction rates were obvious by day 4 for the group treated with extract (19.25%) and the group treated with mahanimbicine (2) (12.60%), while complete epithelialization was achieved on day 18 for all treatment groups. Wounds treated with mahanimbicine (2) (88.54%) and extract of M. koenigii (91.78%) showed the highest rate of collagen deposition with well-organized collagen bands, formation of fibroblasts, hair follicle buds and with reduced inflammatory cells compared to wounds treated with mahanine (1), mahanimbine (3) and essential oil.
