Despite the proven benefits of motorized lifting devices in reducing the physical stresses experienced by nurses during patient transfers, the low adoption of these devices remains limited. The study aimed to assess the perceptions of nurses regarding the new motorized lifting device (NEAR-1) in terms of their perceived workload and usability during patient transfers. A cross-sectional study was conducted to evaluate the perceptions of nurses (n = 45) and students (n = 6) when performing patient transfers from bed to wheelchair and vice versa using the NEAR-1 compared to an existing floor lift, walking belt, and manual transfer. Participants filled out surveys evaluating the perceived task demands and usability of the NEAR-1, as well as open-ended interviews. The use of the NEAR-1 significantly reduced the mean of all NASA-TLX constructs (p < 0.001) when compared to manual transfer. When comparing with other existing lifting devices, the NEAR-1 (24.4 ± 3.0) recorded the lowest overall score of NASA-TLX perceived workload, followed by the existing floor lift (26.1 ± 11.6), a robotic-assisted transfer device (28.3 ± 6.8) and mechanical floor lift (31.5 ± 9.3). The participants recorded a usability score of 76.86, indicating positive perceptions of the nurses towards the technology. Overall, the NEAR-1 has the potential to reduce the physical stresses on nurses and decrease the likelihood of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs). The NEAR-1 may represent a promising new intervention for transferring patients that is capable of minimizing the nurses' perceived workload in clinical and non-clinical settings. Objectives. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of patient transfer assistive devices in reducing the risk of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) among nurses. Methods. PubMed, Scopus, Google Scholar and the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews were searched to identify studies with a quantitative assessment of the efficacy of patient transfer assistive devices on the incidence and injury claims of WMSDs as compared to the manual lifting of patients. A health impact analysis of the pre–post intervention of assistive device implementation was performed. The percentage of the reduction of forces, incidence of WMSDs, number of missed workdays and injury compensation claims were calculated, pooled and presented as boxplots. Results. A total of 25 studies met the inclusion criteria. The best post-intervention outcomes of assistive devices deployment in the healthcare setting included a reduction in WMSD incidence by 59.8%, missed workdays by 90.0% and workers' compensation claims by 95.0%. Additionally, hand force declined by 71% (p < 0.05) and 70% (p < 0.05) with the use of air-assisted devices and ceiling lifts respectively. Conclusions. Overall, the evidence suggests that patient transfer assistive devices, notably ceiling lifts and air-assisted devices, are effective in reducing the risk of WMSDs among nurses. A "no-lift" policy in healthcare discourages manual patient lifting to reduce worker injuries. This study explores modifications to a floor lift (NEAR-1) to align with this policy. NEAR-1 features a shorter lower lifting arm and a redesigned sling, enabling patients to (a) transfer in a sitting position, unlike a floor lift's semi-reclining position, and (b) feel more in control by removing the sling's rotational degree of freedom and letting the patient's feet rest on the lifter base. The device also reduced patient weight-bearing, compared to sit-to-stand lifts. Biomechanical analysis was done to map the risk to the nurses and capture the patient's experience with the modified lift (NEAR-1). Thirteen subjects carried out patient transfer tasks using both the NEAR-1 and the manual transfer approach, and this comparison will provide the baseline data for future systematic reviews. From the results, NEAR-1 significantly reduced the L5-S1 compression, the mediolateral shear forces, and the anteroposterior shear forces, with the exception of the muscle activities in the lower back, the shoulder, and the biceps. Moreover, patients felt safer and more comfortable with the device. Overall, the NEAR-1 lifter presents a biomechanically beneficial and user-friendly option for patients with limited weight-bearing capability.

Accurate diagnosis of strongyloidiasis is crucial for effective treatment and prevention of complications. We reviewed the current landscape of diagnostic assays used in detecting Strongyloides infection in Southeast Asia. A literature search was performed using Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases spanning the last three decades. Based on the exclusion and inclusion criteria, 52 papers were included in this review. We outlined the diagnostic methods used and their advantages and drawbacks. Insensitive parasitological methods were commonly used, thus underscoring the underestimation of Strongyloides infection rates in Southeast Asia. A combination of diagnostic methods (i.e., microscopy, molecular techniques, and serology) is preferred because it leads to more effective detection and higher prevalence rates. New approaches have been developed, including urine ELISAs and rapid lateral flow tests. Improving and standardizing diagnostics and making them more accessible can improve Strongyloides prevalence estimates and facilitate control efforts.

A high prevalence of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) has been reported among nurses as a result of the injuries caused by patient transfer and handling. This review examines the impact of motorised and non-motorised lifting devices on reducing physical stress during wheelchair transfers among nurses. Systematic electronic database searches were performed, and the review was prepared according to the PRISMA guidelines. The results of 20 studies on biomechanical stresses related to WMSDs were synthesised qualitatively, and 13 were analysed quantitatively using meta-analysis. Motorised lifting devices significantly decreased biomechanical stress among nurses [SMD -0.68; 95% CI -1.02 to -0.34], whereas non-motorised counterparts showed no significant change [SMD - 0.23; 95% CI -0.59 to 0.13]. This study underscores the effectiveness of motorised lifting devices in mitigating WMSD risk during wheelchair transfers. The findings provide practical guidance for hospital administrators, policymakers, and experts seeking suitable devices to prevent WMSDs in nursing professionals., Practitioner Summary: This study investigated the impact of motorised and non-motorised lifting devices on nurses during wheelchair transfers. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) hold tremendous potential for therapeutic use in stem cell-based gene therapy. Ex vivo genetic modification of MSCs with beneficial genes of interest is a prerequisite for successful use of stem cell-based therapeutic applications. However, genetic manipulation of MSCs is challenging because they are resistant to commonly used methods to introduce exogenous DNA or RNA. Herein we compared the effectiveness of several techniques (classic calcium phosphate precipitation, cationic polymer, and standard electroporation) with that of microporation technology to introduce the plasmid encoding for angiopoietin-1 (ANGPT-1) and enhanced green fluorescent protein (eGFP) into human adipose-derived MSCs (hAD-MSCs). The microporation technique had a higher transfection efficiency, with up to 50% of the viable hAD-MSCs being transfected, compared to the other transfection techniques, for which less than 1% of cells were positive for eGFP expression following transfection. The capability of cells to proliferate and differentiate into three major lineages (chondrocytes, adipocytes, and osteocytes) was found to be independent of the technique used for transfection. These results show that the microporation technique is superior to the others in terms of its ability to transfect hAD-MSCs without affecting their proliferation and differentiation capabilities. Therefore, this study provides a foundation for the selection of techniques when using ex vivo gene manipulation for cell-based gene therapy with MSCs as the vehicle for gene delivery.
