Given the vast diversity of bee species and the limited availability of taxonomy experts, bee species identification has become increasingly important, especially with the rise of apiculture practice. This review systematically explores the application of machine learning (ML) techniques in bee species determination, shedding light on the transformative potential of ML in entomology. Conducting a keyword-based search in the Scopus and Web of Science databases with manual screening resulted in 26 relevant publications. Focusing on shallow and deep learning studies, our analysis reveals a significant inclination towards deep learning, particularly post-2020, underscoring its ability to handle complex, high-dimensional data for accurate species identification. Most studies have utilized images of stationary bees for the determination task, despite the high computational demands from image processing, with fewer studies utilizing the sound and movement of the bees. This emerging field faces challenges in terms of dataset scarcity with limited geographical coverage. Additionally, research predominantly focuses on honeybees, with stingless bees receiving less attention, despite their economic potential. This review encapsulates the state of ML applications in bee species determination. It also emphasizes the growing research interest and technological advancements, aiming to inspire future explorations that bridge the gap between computational science and biodiversity conservation.

Latent toxoplasmosis could induce various hormonal and behavioural perturbations in infected hosts. We aimed to study the latent seroprevalence of Toxoplasma gondii (T. gondii) and the relationship between infection, knowledge and behaviour among 400 pregnant mothers. Plasma samples were tested for the presence of T. gondii IgG antibodies while a structured questionnaire was used to record respondents' socio-demographic characteristics, general information and knowledge on plausible risk factors, symptoms, timing of infection, and preventive knowledge and behaviour regarding toxoplasmosis. The seroprevalence of latent toxoplasmosis among respondents was at 31.8%. This study indicated that 69.5% of them had poor knowledge of toxoplasmosis but most of them (99.8%) practised preventive behaviours. Multiple logistic regression analysis showed that pregnant women with low education levels (aOR: 1.91, 95% CI 1.18, 3.10; p = 0.008) and past medical history (aOR: 2.32, 95% CI 1.32, 4.06; p = 0.003) were both twice as likely to have anti-T. gondii IgG seropositivity. Besides, women who were unsure regarding the transmission mode of the disease via blood transfusion were four times more likely (aOR: 3.93, 95% CI 1.54, 10.01; p = 0.004) to have chronic toxoplasmosis seroprevalence. Women who were unsure regarding the necessities of avoiding stray cats had aOR of 0.42 (95% CI 0.24, 0.71, p = 0.001) for chronic toxoplasmosis seroprevalence. Translating the knowledge on toxoplasmosis into the practice of preventive behaviour via a health education programme is crucial in reducing the risk of disease transmission especially among pregnant women. Conversational artificial intelligence (AI) is a type of artificial intelligence that uses machine learning techniques to understand and respond to user inputs. This paper presents a conversational chat system that uses an attention mechanism to respond to COVID-19 inquiries. The model is based on the Luong Attention Mechanism’s three scoring methodologies the Dot Attention Mechanism, the General Attention Mechanism, and the Concat Attention Mechanism. The results show that the accuracy of the dot attention mechanism is highest and is 87% when the test questions were obtained directly from the database, as determined by an examination of the results, compared to 38% when the attention mechanism is not used. Furthermore, when the questions are asked with natural variations, human verification accuracy is 63% compared to 16% when the attention mechanism is not used. The research suggests that chatbots can be used everywhere due to their accuracy and accessibility around the clock.

Automatic segmentation is essential for enhancing human activity recognition, especially given the limitations of publicly available datasets that often lack diversity in daily activities. This study introduces a novel segmentation method that utilizes skeleton data for a more accurate and efficient analysis of human actions. By employing an autoencoder, this method extracts representative features and reconstructs the dataset, using the discrepancies between the original and reconstructed data to establish a segmentation threshold. This innovative approach allows for the automatic segmentation of activity datasets into distinct segments. Rigorous evaluations against ground truth across three publicly available datasets demonstrate the method’s effectiveness, achieving impressive average annotation error, precision, recall, and F1-score values of 3.6, 90%, 87%, and 88%, respectively. This illustrates the robustness of the proposed method in accurately identifying change points and segmenting continuous skeleton-based activities as compared to two other state-of-the-art techniques: one based on deep learning and another using the classical time-series segmentation algorithm. Additionally, the dynamic thresholding mechanism enhances the adaptability of the segmentation process to different activity dynamics improving overall segmentation accuracy. This performance highlights the potential of the proposed method to significantly advance the field of human activity recognition by improving the accuracy and efficiency of identifying and categorizing human movements.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) poses a significant threat to visual health among the elderly, necessitating urgent preventive measures as the global population ages. Extensive research has implicated oxidative stress (OS)-induced retinal damage as a primary contributor to AMD pathogenesis, prompting investigations into potential therapeutic interventions. Among the various nutrients studied for their potential in AMD risk reduction, antioxidants have shown promise, with initial findings from the Age-Related Eye Disease Study suggesting a correlation between antioxidant supplementation and decreased AMD progression. This article explores the scientific foundation supporting the therapeutic efficacy of tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) as a viable candidate for slowing AMD progression, based on interventional studies. AMD is characterized by OS, inflammation, dysregulated lipid metabolism, and angiogenesis, all of which TRF purportedly addresses through its potent anti-inflammatory, lipid-lowering, antiangiogenic, and antioxidant properties. The review underscores TRF's promising attributes, aiming to deepen understanding of AMD pathogenesis and advocate for TRF-based pharmacological interventions to enhance therapeutic outcomes. Given the pressing need for effective AMD treatments, TRF represents a promising avenue for intervention, offering hope for improved vision outcomes and enhanced quality of life for individuals affected by this debilitating condition.

Endothelial dysfunction initiates the pathogenesis of a myriad of cardiovascular diseases, yet the precise underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Current model utilises mechanical denudation of arteries resulting in an arterial-injury model with onset of intimal hyperplasia (IH). Our study shows that 5 min enzymatic denudation of human umbilical artery (hUA) lumen at 37 °C efficiently denudes hUA while maintaining vessel integrity without significantly increase intima-media thickness after 7 days in culture. This ex-vivo model will be a valuable tool in understanding the mechanism of re-endothelialization prior to smooth muscle cells (SMC) activation thus placating IH at an early stage.

Purpose: Angiogenesis in diabetic retinopathy (DR) is associated with increased retinal expression of angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and protein kinase C (PKC). Tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF) has been shown to reduce the expression vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) in several experimental models. However, its effect against other angiogenic markers such as Ang-2 and PKC in rat model of diabetes remains unknown. Therefore, we investigated the effect of TRF on the retinal vascular changes and Ang-2 and PKC expressions in rats with streptozotocin (STZ)-induced DR., Methods: Sprague-Dawley rats were divided into normal control rats (N) which received vehicle, and diabetic rats which either received vehicle (DV) or 100 mg/kg of TRF (DT). Diabetes was induced with intraperitoneal injection of STZ (60 mg/kg body weight). Treatments were given orally, once daily, for 12 weeks after confirmation of hyperglycaemia. Fundus photographs were captured at baseline, 6- and 12-week post-STZ injection and average diameter of retinal veins and arteries were measured. At 12-week post-STZ injection, rats were euthanised, and retinae were collected for measurement of Ang-2 and PKC gene and protein expressions., Results: Retinal venous and arterial diameters were significantly greater in DV compared to DT at week 12 post-STZ injection (p < 0.001 and < 0.05, respectively). The vessel diameter measurements in DT were comparable to N and this effect of TRF was associated with significantly lower Ang-2 and PKC gene and protein expressions compared to DV., Conclusion: Oral TRF reduces the expression of retinal angiogenic markers and preserves the retinal vascular diameter of rats with STZ-induced DR., (© 2023. The rapid healing of oral ulcers is important to prevent secondary infection, especially for chronic oral ulcers. Platelet lysate (PL) is rich in growth factors for cell growth and promotes tissue regeneration. Hence, this study was performed to compare the effects of PL originating from umbilical cord blood (CB) and peripheral blood (PB) on oral mucosal wound healing. The PLs were molded into gel form in the culture insert with the addition of calcium chloride and conditioned medium for sustained release of growth factors. The CB-PL and PB-PL gels were found to degrade slowly in culture and their degradation percentages by weight were 5.28 ± 0.72% and 9.55 ± 1.82% respectively. The results from the scratch assay and Alamar blue assay showed that the CB-PL and PB-PL gels increased the proliferation (148 ± 3% and 149 ± 3%) and wound closure (94.17 ± 1.77% and 92.75 ± 1.80%) of oral mucosal fibroblasts compared to the control with no statistical differences between the two gels, respectively. Quantitative RT-PCR showed that mRNA expressions of collagen-I, collagen-III, fibronectin, and elastin genes in cells treated with CB-PL (11-, 7-, 2-, and 7-fold) and PB-PL (17-, 14-, 3-, and 7-fold) decreased compared with the control, respectively. The concentration of platelet-derived growth factor of PB-PL gel (1303.10 ± 343.96 pg/mL) showed a higher trend than CB-PL gel did (905.48 ± 69.65 pg/mL) from ELISA measurement. In summary, CB-PL gel is as effective as PB-PL gel in supporting oral mucosal wound healing, making it a potential new source of PL for regenerative treatment.

Objective: To describe the prevalence of menstrual problems (heavy menses bleeding, dysmenorrhoea and oligomenorrhoea) and its impact towards quality of life among adolescents in Klang Valley, Malaysia., Design: Cross-sectional study., Setting: Adolescent girls at secondary schools in the Klang Valley, Malaysia., Population: 729 adolescents aged between 13 and 18 years., Method: A questionnaire survey using Menorrhagia Questionnaire and Paediatric Quality of Life-Teen Report Ages 13-18 (PedsQL)., Main Outcome Measures: Self reports of menstrual bleeding patterns, morbidities and effect on quality of life., Results: The prevalence of menstrual problems among adolescents was 63.9% in the Klang Valley. Adolescents with menstrual problems had significant lower mean total score of PedsQL (70.23±13.53 vs 76.36±14.93, p=0.001), physical health summary score (74.10±16.83 vs 79.00±15.86, p<0.001) and psychosocial health summary score (68.05±14.27 vs 73.21±13.09, p=0.001) compared with those without menstrual problem. Adolescents experiencing heavy menses bleeding had the lowest physical and emotional function. Those with oligomenorrhoea had the lowest social function, whereas those with dysmenorrhoea had the lowest school function. Cigarette smoking, alcohol and medical illness had lower health-related quality of life, whereas taking oral contraceptive pills for menstrual problems was associated with higher scores in these adolescents., Conclusion: Menstrual problems among adolescents have a significant impact on their quality of life. Objectives: We compared cases of phenotypic female patients who presented with male karyotype and underwent prophylactic gonadectomy., Case Presentation: Five patients with female phenotypes presented in early adulthood with primary amenorrhoea with varying degrees of puberty. One was tall with breast development. Another was very short with clitoromegaly and multiple co-morbidities. The other three had no secondary sexual characteristics. They were examined, after which hormonal profile, karyotyping, ultrasound examination and magnetic resonance imaging were done to assess the site of gonads. Gonadectomy was performed once their 46 XY karyotype was confirmed. Results of histopathological examination of their gonads ranged from dysgenetic gonads to having testicular tissues and malignancy., Conclusion: Female patients with 46 XY karyotypes require prophylactic gonadectomy performed at different timings depending on diagnosis due to the malignancy risk. Background: Deep cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a reversible yet potentially serious thromboembolic event. A number of reports suggest a relationship between long-haul flights and thromboembolic events, mainly deep venous thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism (PE). It is rarely reported to cause deep cerebral venous sinus thrombosis. We report a case of a bilateral papilledema after long-haul flight secondary to deep cerebral venous sinus thrombosis with subsequent complete recovery post corticosteroid and anticoagulant therapy., Case: A case of a 21-year-old woman with no known medical illness who presented with gradual painless bilateral visual loss is described. She had a history of travelling on a long-haul flight 3 weeks prior to presentation. Examination showed presence of bilateral papilloedema, no vitritis, choroiditis and retinitis. Blood investigations showed raised international normalised ratio (INR). Otherwise, workup for infectious causes of optic disc swelling, connective tissue disease screening were normal. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and magnetic resonance venography (MRV) of the brain showed loss of flow signal in the right transverse sinus and the left sigmoid sinus. Blood workup for preexisting hypercoagulable state was normal. She was diagnosed with deep cerebral venous sinus thrombosis and showed complete recovery with oral corticosteroid and anticoagulant therapy., Conclusion: Deep cerebral venous sinus thrombosis is a potentially serious consequence of long-haul flights. A high index of suspicion along with radiological techniques is needed for early detection and initiation of anticoagulation for this reversible condition.

Background: This study investigates the health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of female patients with congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH) in Malaysia. The objectives were to attain socio-demographic and medical data on these Malaysian females with CAH and establish their health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in comparison to age matched diabetic controls., Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted over 6 months in the two main tertiary centres for CAH patients in Malaysia. Participants including 59 female-raised CAH patients (mean age ± SD = 16.3 ± 4.2 years, range 10-28 years) compared to 57 age-matched female diabetic patients (mean age ± SD = 16.5 ± 3.4 years, range 10-26 years). Socio-demographic and medical profiles was obtained through semi-structured interviews. HRQOL of participants were evaluated utilising validated, Malay translated questionnaires which were age appropriate: Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory (PedsQL v4.0) scales for Child (8-12) and Adolescent (13-18) and Medical Outcome Survey 36-item Short Form version. These were then compared to the diabetic controls., Results: The CAH participants consisted of children (ages 10-12 years, n = 12), adolescents (ages 13-17 years, n = 29) and adults (≥ 18 years, n = 18). The majority were Malays (64.4%) and had salt-wasting CAH (67.8%). There were no significant differences between the total mean score of the HRQOL of the combined children and adolescents CAH group (total mean score ± SD = 81.6 ± 17.9, 95% CI = 75.6-87.6) when compared to age-matched diabetic patients (total mean score ± SD = 80.8 ± 11.0, 95% CI = 77.0-84.5, P = 0.81, effect size = 0.05); no significant difference between the adult CAH and diabetic controls in the physical [median score (IQR) CAH vs diabetics; 49.3 (11.4) vs. 50.2 (6.1), P = 0.60, effect size = 0.09] and the mental composite scores [median score (IQR) CAH vs. diabetics; 47.8 (14.1) vs. 50.0 (10.8), P = 0.93, effect size = 0.01]., Conclusions: The HRQOL of the Malaysian CAH cohort were comparable to the diabetic controls.

The discovery of induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells in 2006 marked a major breakthrough in regenerative medicine, enabling reversal of terminally differentiated somatic cells into pluripotent stem cells. The embryonic stem (ES) cells-like pluripotency and unlimited self-renewal capability of iPS cells have granted them enormous potential in many applications, particularly regenerative therapy. Unlike ES cells, however, iPS cells exhibit somatic memories which were carried over from the tissue of origin thus limited its translation in clinical applications. This review provides an updated overview of the retention of various somatic memories associated with the cellular identity, age and metabolism of tissue of origin in iPS cells. The influence of cell types, stage of maturation, age and various other factors on the retention of somatic memory has been discussed. Recent evidence of somatic memory in the form of epigenetic, transcriptomic, metabolic signatures and its functional manifestations in both in vitro and in vivo settings also have been reviewed. The increasing number of studies which had adopted isogenic cell lines for comparisons in recent years had facilitated the identification of genuine somatic memories. These memories functionally affect iPS cells and its derivatives and are potentially tumorigenic thus, raising concerns on their safety in clinical application. Various approaches for memory erasure had since being reported and their efficacies were highlighted in this review.

Cerebral arteriovenous malformation (AVM) is a rare entity with an estimated prevalence of 0.01-0.05% in the general population. We reviewed hospital obstetric records during 2010-2017 and reported a case series of six patients with cerebral AVM in pregnancy, of which five patients had successful pregnancy, and one maternal mortality., (© 2019 The Author(s). Endometriosis is a benign, chronic inflammatory condition characterized by the presence and growth of endometrial implants outside the uterine cavity. The cause of endometriosis is multifactorial. It is due to the diversity of hypothesis and plausibility of hormonal alterations which could play a major role. Evidence has shown that progesterone resistance is a key factor for endometriosis sufferers. Medical therapy can avoid surgical intervention, which may lead to a reduced in ovarian reserve, and its effects of earlier menopause and reduced fecundity. Progesterone receptor isoform has provided new insight as the potential treatment. Progestin, anti-progestin and selective progesterone receptor modulators usage, which target these receptors, could avoid hypo-estrogenic side effects, which can be debilitating. Numerous types of these medications have been used on and off labeled to treat endometriosis with varying success. This review aims to consolidate series of clinical trials using progestins in endometriosis.

Endometriotic cysts a common benign gynaecological disease in women of reproductive age. We report an unusual case of ruptured endometrioma associated with increased CA 19-9. A 27-year-old woman presented with an acute abdomenal adnexal mass and elevated CA 19-9. The initial diagnosis of ovarian malignancy turned out to be a ruptured endometrioma, confirmed during surgery and in the histopathological report.

Background: The three-dimensional (3D) system is one of the important factors to engineer a biocompatible and functional scaffold for the applications of cell-based therapies for cartilage repair. The 3D alginate hydrogels system has previously been shown to potentially promote chondrogenesis. The chondrocytic differentiation of co-cultured adipose-derived stem cells (ADSCs) and nasal chondrocytes (NCs) within alginate constructs are hypothesized to be influenced by concentration of alginate hydrogel. In this study, we evaluated the effects of alginate concentration on chondrogenic differentiation of ADSCs and NCs co-cultured in a biological approach., Method: The co-cultured cells of 2:1 ADSCs-to-NCs ratio were encapsulated in alginate constructs in one of three concentrations (1.0%, 1.2% and 1.5%) and cultured under serum free conditions for 7 days. Cell viability, cell proliferation, immunohistochemical, gycosaminogylycans (GAG) synthesis, and gene expression were examined., Results: Overall, the 1.2% alginate concentration group was relatively effective in chondrocytic differentiation in comparable to other groups. The cell morphology, cell viability, and cell proliferation revealed initial chondrogenic differentiation by the formation of cell clusters as well as the high permeability for exchange of solutes. The formation of newly synthesis cartilage-specific extracellular matrix in 1.2% group was demonstrated by positive immunohistochemical staining of collagen type II. The co-cultured cells in 1.2% group highly expressed COL II, ACP and SOX-9, compared to 1.0% and 1.5% groups, denote the retention of cartilaginous-specific phenotype by suppressing the undifferentiation stem cell markers of SOX-2 and OCT-4. The study showed 1.2% group was less likely to differentiate towards osteogenesis by downregulating hyperthrophy chondrocytic gene of COL X and osseous marker genes of OSC and OSP., Conclusion: This study suggests that variations in the alginate concentration of co-cultured ADSCs and NCs influenced the chondrogenesis. The remarkable biological performance on chondrogenic differentiation in regulating the concentration of alginate 3D culture provides new insights into the cell cross-talk and demonstrates the effectiveness in regenerative therapies of cartilage defects in tissue engineering.

Background Back pain is a common presenting complaint during pregnancy and it is often being considered as part of the pregnancy process. The purpose of the study is to investigate the prevalence of back pain in pregnancy, risk factors and its impact on the quality of life in pregnant women. Materials and methods Three hundred and fifty-eight pregnant women who attended the antenatal clinic in Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) Medical Centre were recruited in this cross-sectional study from October 2011 until April 2012. The back pain was further classified into lumbar pain and posterior pelvic pain. The severity of back pain was assessed using visual analoque scale (VAS) and the functional limitation was assessed using the Oswestry Disability Questionnaire (ODQ). Result The prevalence of back pain in pregnancy was 84.6%. Occupation and previous history of back pain were associated with back pain in pregnancy. In terms of functional limitation disability, total ODQ score was statistically significant correlate with severity of pain (VAS score). Personal care, sitting, standing, sex life and social life were significantly affected. Conclusion The risk factors for back pain in pregnancy were type of occupation and history of back pain. The higher VAS score, the more ODQ will be affected. Personal care, sitting, standing, sex life and social life were significantly affected.

Objective To assess the efficacy of an exercise program towards reducing back pain in pregnant women. Methods In this prospective control study, 145 low risk pregnant women who scored more than 20 for functional limitation assessment were recruited. The severity of back pain was assessed using the visual analoque scale (VAS) and the functional limitation was assessed using the Oswestry disability questionnaire (ODQ). All participants were informed of back care measures and provided with Paracetamol as an adjunct analgesia. The intervention group will have a session with a trained physiotherapist. Subsequently, all participants will be required to fill in a similar questionnaire regarding pain intensity and functional limitation assessment after 6 weeks post-intervention. Results There was a significant reduction in the VAS score and improvement in functional ODQ score in the intervention group. The median usage of Paracetamol as an analgesia to control back pain in the control group was 500 mg higher than the intervention group. There was a weak association of age, parity, duration of back pain, and body mass index with functional ODQ score at 6 week following intervention. Conclusion The back pain exercise reducing program was effective in reducing back pain intensity and analgesia usage with a significant improvement in functional ability.

Wernicke's encephalopathy (WE) is a rare life-threatening complication following severe hyperemesis gravidarum. Early recognition of this condition and prompt thiamine administration is the key to preventing devastating sequelae. We report a successful delivery of a small-for-gestational-age (SGA) baby by a patient with WE and thyrotoxicosis in pregnancy.
