Du Bois set in motion a great century-long debate with his observation at the end of the 19th century that the history of the 20th century would be struggles over the color line.1 More than a rhetorical debate it summed up political struggle on all levels, from local towns in Mississippi to the global dynamics of capital in unprecedented patterns of accumulation. At the beginning of the 21st century we can state that while the quality of life of the peoples of most of Asia, Africa, and Latin America remains essentially unchanged or has gotten worse, what has changed is the consensus about what to do. During colonialism, we had an anti-colonial movement for national liberation, we had consensus about the problems and solutions of the historical moment. Now we have been disoriented by neo-colonialism. When facing segregation, we built a civil rights movement. Now we have been disoriented with de jure civil rights covering up for de facto segregation and degradation. In earlier periods, white leadership dominated. This collection of articles concerning archaeological and historical investigations of New Philadelphia concludes with a commentary that discusses the heritage of Frank and Lucy McWorter and the town, and the challenges of such research endeavors from the perspective of a descendant and a scholar of Black agency and African American history. Like many other McWorter descendants, Abdul Alkalimat sees such an archaeological project as a way to promote, preserve, and further explore the story of that founding family and the town. The role of such research projects in expanding the base of support and knowledge is highly valuable. The legacy of freedom, a powerful story rooted in the history of Frank and Lucy McWorter, provides a profound and important message within American history.

Digital technology facilitates the networking together of cultural heritage information held by multiple institutions and individuals. Yet socio-digital inequalities at the level of local communities shape how this possibility develops in places. This paper presents a case study of one project to network African-American community cultural heritage information in the contexts of collaborative digitization, community informatics, and the widespread use of commercial social networking services. Analysis occurs through the lenses of social capital theory and the eBlack Studies framework. Findings illustrate the critical dialectic between bridging/instrumental and bonding/affective social capital in community digitization: communities need bridging social capital to become aware of collaborative digitization projects and possibilities; they also need to invest bonding social capital into such projects to produce a self-determined collective digital representation. Flows of economic capital inform how these alignments of social capital inform the production of digital cultural heritage.

Not only does he break ground in his insightful attention to the cultural basis of black politics, he also makes an important contribution to the critical appreciation of mass culture as distinct from the plethora of texts on lite behavior. Finally, he also can be commended for suggesting how black culture and politics can and should serve as a source of a new richer multicultural political discourse and practice. And in the process, he has laid the grounds for an expanded and more rewarding discourse and research in the field of political science itself.
