Background: Physical activity of any amount results in substantial health benefits. However, public awareness of physical activity benefits in chronic diseases is inadequate in India. Prediabetes is a significant health issue on a global scale. Visceral fat (VF) is considered as an early predictor of prediabetes. Ethnicity and race have a substantial impact on VF. Hence, this study intended to evaluate the effect of a customized physical activity promotion program on VF and glycemic parameters in individuals with prediabetes. Methods: In the current, parallel group randomized controlled trial, a total of 158 participants were recruited: 79 in intervention and 79 in control group. The study included the prediabetes individuals based on American Diabetes Association criteria. Participants from the intervention group received the customized physical activity promotion program for 24 weeks. The primary outcome measures of the study were VF level and glycemic parameters that included fasting blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin. Two-way mixed analysis of variance was used to study the mean difference of an outcome between 2 groups over time. Results: The study found a statistically significant interaction between the intervention and times on VF level, F1,136 = 23.564, fasting blood sugar levels, F1,136 = 8.762, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels, F1,136 = 64.582 at the end of 24 weeks (P <.05). Conclusions: This study concluded that a customized physical activity promotion program was effective in reducing VF in individuals with prediabetes as compared with controls. Background: Numerous reports indicate that both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are factors associated with cognitive impairment (CI). The objective was to assess the relationship between abdominal obesity as measured by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI) and CI in middle-aged and elderly patients with T2DM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which a total of 1154 patients with T2DM aged ≥ 40 years were included. WHRadjBMI was calculated based on anthropometric measurements and CI was assessed utilizing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Participants were divided into CI group (n = 509) and normal cognition group (n = 645). Correlation analysis and binary logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between obesity-related indicators including WHRadjBMI, BMI as well as waist circumference (WC) and CI. Meanwhile, the predictive power of these indicators for CI was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: WHRadjBMI was positively correlated with MoCA scores, independent of sex. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for WHRadjBMI, BMI and WC were 0.639, 0.521 and 0.533 respectively, and WHRadjBMI had the highest predictive power for CI. Whether or not covariates were adjusted, one-SD increase in WHRadjBMI was significantly related to an increased risk of CI with an adjusted OR of 1.451 (95% CI: 1.261–1.671). After multivariate adjustment, the risk of CI increased with rising WHRadjBMI quartiles (Q4 vs. Q1 OR: 2.980, 95%CI: 2.032–4.371, P for trend < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study illustrated that higher WHRadjBMI is likely to be associated with an increased risk of CI among patients with T2DM. Background: Worsening renal function (WRF) is a frequent comorbidity of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, its relationship with abdominal obesity in terms of HFpEF remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the value of waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) in predicting WRF and examine the correlation between abdominal obesity and the risk of WRF in the HFpEF population. Methods: Data were obtained from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist trial. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC ≥ 102 cm for men and ≥ 88 cm for women. WRF was defined as doubling of serum creatinine concentration from baseline. Restricted cubic splines and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the value of WC and BMI in predicting WRF. Cumulative incidence curves and cox proportional-hazards models were used to compare patients with and without abdominal obesity. Results: We included 2,806 patients with HFpEF in our study (abdominal obesity, n: 2,065). Although baseline creatinine concentrations did not differ, patients with abdominal obesity had higher concentrations during a median follow-up time of 40.9 months. Unlike BMI, WC exhibited a steady linear association with WRF and was a superior WRF predictor. Patients with abdominal obesity exhibited a higher risk of WRF after multivariable adjustment (hazard ratio: 1.632; 95% confidence interval: 1.015–2.621; P: 0.043). • Higher intact fruit intake is inversely associated with visceral adipose tissue in US adults aged 18-59 years. • The nonlinear inverse association strengthens with intact fruit intake below 1.7 cups equivalent daily. • Our findings effectively characterize the typical American adult consumer using sample-weighted methodologies. Excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) plays a crucial role in leading to obesity-related diseases. However, the association between fruit intake (excluding fruit juice) and VAT is not well-known. We aim to further explore this association in a large population. We hypothesized that higher intact fruit intake would be inversely associated with VAT. A total of 9582 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Food Patterns Equivalents Database 2011-2018 were included. Weighted linear regression models were utilized to evaluate the association between intact fruit intake (from two 24-hour dietary recalls) and VAT area (measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry). Subgroup analysis was conducted to test the robustness of the results. Restricted cubic spline analysis was performed to find the nonlinear association. The median of intact fruit intake was 0.32 cup-equivalent (eq)/d, and the mean of VAT was 104.87 ± 1.23 cm2. Intact fruit intake (increased by 1 cup-eq/d) demonstrated an inverse association with VAT area across three adjusted models, with β (95% confidence interval) values of –7(–8.49, –5.51), –6(–7.50, –4.51), and –3.02(–4.11, –1.94) in model 1, model 2, and model 3, respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed no interactions were found among age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index, and physical activity subgroups. Restricted cubic spline revealed the inverse association was more significant when intact fruit intake was less than 1.7 cups-eq/d. These findings suggest that increasing intact fruit consumption could be an effective public health strategy to mitigate VAT accumulation and associated health risks, advancing our understanding of dietary impacts on adiposity. Objectives: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with ischemic stroke is relatively high. The visceral fat area (VFA) is a predictor of MetS. This study aimed to estimate sex-specific optimal cut-off values of VFA and MetS risk factors among patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 851 patients with ischemic stroke was conducted between March 2019 and January 2020 in a tertiary hospital in the northeast of China. VFA was measured using the dual bioelectrical impedance method. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate MetS risk factors, and the VFA cut-off value was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Results: The overall prevalence of MetS was 43.4%. After adjusting for potential confounders, female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 2.86, p < 0.001), the presence of visceral obesity according to VFA (OR = 7.45, p < 0.001), being overweight (OR = 2.75, p < 0.001) or obesity (OR = 6.00, p < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of MetS. The correlation between VFA and MetS in patients with ischemic stroke was strongest with cut-off values of 104.3 cm2 (sensitivity 73.0%, specificity 83.1%) for men, and 94.1 cm2 (sensitivity 70.9%, specificity 72.9%) for women. Conclusion: MetS affected approximately a half of patients with ischemic stroke. Female sex, visceral obesity, and body mass index were independent risk factors for the development of MetS. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between social jetlag (SJL) and obesity-related outcomes among adolescents from Valle de Ricote (Region of Murcia, Spain). We explored the relationship between SJL and body mass index (BMI) z-score, waist circumference, and body fat percentage, as well as the odds of having excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity in a sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project, which included 847 Spanish adolescents aged 12–17 years. SJL was assessed based on the differences in sleep patterns between weekdays and weekends. Obesity-related indicators such as BMI z-score, waist circumference, body fat percentage, excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity were measured. Generalized linear models with a Gaussian or binomial distribution were used to analyze the associations between SJL and obesity-related outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: The analysis revealed significant associations between SJL and BMI z-score (unstandardized beta coefficient [B] = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.25, p = 0.003), waist circumference (B = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.39 to 1.67, p = 0.002), and body fat percentage (B = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.31 to 1.43, p = 0.008). Additionally, the odds ratios (ORs) for excess weight (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.57; p < 0.001), obesity (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.26 to 2.00; p < 0.001), and abdominal obesity (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.23 to 1.72; p < 0.001) increased significantly with each 60 min increment in SJL. Conclusions: This study pointed out that the misalignment of sleeping times during weekdays and weekends (SJL) is significantly associated with higher BMI z-scores, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and higher odds of excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity among adolescents, being more significant in boys than in girls. These findings highlight the importance of addressing circadian misalignment in the prevention and management of obesity and its related metabolic disorders in this population. Background: The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) keeps increasing annually worldwide. Non-invasive assessment tools for evaluating the risk and severity of the disease are still limited. Insulin resistance (IR) and abdominal obesity (ABO) are closely related to NAFLD. Methods: A retrospective large-scale, population-based study was conducted based on the data from the 2017–2018 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Three ABO indices, namely lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral obesity index (VAI), waist circumference-triglyceride index (WTI), and three IR indices, including triglyceride glucose index (TyG), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), were analyzed and compared for their relationships with NAFLD based on weighted multivariable logistic regression, spearman correlation heatmap, smooth curve fittings. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic capability of these indices for NAFLD. Differences among the AUCs were calculated and compared by Delong test. Results: In total, 3095 participants were included in our study among which 1368 adults were diagnosed with NAFLD. All six indices presented positive associations with NAFLD. There was a claw-shaped curve between HOMA-IR, VAI, LAP and NAFLD while a smooth semi-bell curve was observed in TyG, METS-IR and WTI. LAP and HOMA-IR had the best diagnostic capability for NAFLD (LAP: AUC = 0.8, Youden index = 0.48; HOMA-IR: AUC = 0.798, Youden index = 0.472) while VAI (AUC = 0.728, Youden index = 0.361) showed the lowest predictive value. The correlation heat map indicated positive correlations between all six indices and liver function, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis severity. In the NAFLD group, IR indicators presented a stronger association with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared with ABO indices. Conclusions: All six indices can screen NAFLD withLAP and HOMA-IR being possibly optimal predictors. Objective To investigate the correlation between abdominal obesity and autoimmune thyroid disease in the view point of helper T cells and cytokines. Methods Clinical and laboratory data were collected from 108 patients with Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) plus abdominal obesity and 122 patients of Hashimoto's thyroiditis without abdominal obesity who visited the People's Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and also from the control population. Abdominal circumference was measured, and patients in the HT patients were grouped according to whether they were abdominally obese or not. The thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were detected, and the ratio of helper T cells and related cytokines were detected by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The abdominal circumference of the TgAb-positive group was higher than that of the TgAb-negative group (P<0.05). Correlation analysis suggested that abdominal circumference was significantly and positively correlated with TgAb and IL-4 but negatively correlated with Th1. After correcting for gender and age, and abdominal obesity and IL-4 were risk factors for TgAb antibody positivity OR = 3.080 (95% CI: 1.022-9.284) and OR = 1.296 (95% CI: 1.022-9.284), both with P<0.05. Conclusions Abdominal obesity may be an influential factor in TgAb antibody positivity, with larger abdominal circumference having higher TgAb antibody titers, lower Thl levels, and higher IL-4 levels. Purpose of Review: The recent surge in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cases has paralleled a significant rise in obesity and metabolic comorbidities rates. In this article, we explore the potential influence of obesity and associated metabolic comorbidities on disease progression, complications, treatment response, surgical outcomes, health economics, and the potential impact of obesity treatment on the course of IBD. Findings: Contrary to visceral adiposity, obesity does not consistently result in an increased risk of IBD-related complications. Patients with IBD have a higher risk of acute arterial events, likely linked to systemic inflammation. Substantial evidence suggests that obesity has a negative impact on the response to IBD treatment, with this effect being most thoroughly studied in biologics and immunomodulators. The rates of overall complications and post-operative infections are higher in patients who are obese. There are limited but promising data regarding the impact of weight loss techniques, including exercise, medications, and bariatric interventions, on the outcomes in IBD. Both obesity and diabetes have adverse effects on the overall quality of life and place an increased financial burden on the IBD population. Summary: A growing body of evidence indicates a connection between obesity and associated metabolic comorbidities and negative outcomes in IBD, yet further efforts are required to fully understand this relationship. Objective: In recent years, patients with celiac disease (CeD) have been reported to have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in patients with CeD and effect of gluten-free diet in them. Methods: The PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for original studies upto November 18, 2022. We included full-text articles published in the English language after 1990 that used well-defined criteria for CeD, fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. A random effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence. Results: Of 350 studies identified, 11 studies (n = 2578) were included in the analysis. On analysis of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, pooled prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in treatment-naïve patients with CeD were 18.2% (95% CI 8.3–30.8%, n = 1237) and 4.3% (95% CI 2.4–6.7, n = 1239) and in those on GFD of varying duration was 28.2% (95% CI 20.7–36.4%, n = 1368) and 21.3% (95% CI 11.7–32.9%, n = 2193), respectively. There was no difference in the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome between low- or high-income group countries. Conclusions: Patients with CeD have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome which increases further with the initiation of GFD. Patients with CeD should thus be screened and monitored for development of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. Aim: To study cross‐sectional relationships between step‐up height and waist circumference (WC), a potential proxy for sarcopenic obesity, in Swedish children and parents. Methods: Participants were recruited from Swedish schools in disadvantaged areas in 2017. Height, body weight, WC and maximal step‐up height were measured in 67 eight‐year‐old children and parents: 58 mothers, with a mean age of 38.5 and 32 fathers, with a mean age of 41.3. Sedentary time and physical activity were registered by an accelerometer. Associations between maximal step‐up height and WC were analysed using Pearson's correlation and adjusted linear regression. Results: Abdominal obesity, WC ≥ 66 centimetres (cm) in children, ≥88 cm in women and ≥102 cm in men, was observed in 13% and 35% of girls and boys, and in 53% and 34% among mothers and fathers, respectively. Negative associations between maximal step‐up height and WC were found for children (r = −0.37, p = 0.002) and adults (mothers r = −0.58, p < 0.001, fathers r = −0.48, p = 0.006). The associations remained after adjustments for height, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity in adults. Reduced muscle strength clustered within families (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). Conclusion: Associations between reduced muscle strength and abdominal obesity were observed in children and parents. Sarcopenic obesity may need more attention in children. Purpose: Dietary phytochemicals have been under examination as adjuvants for the prevention and treatment of obesity and diabetes. This study aimed at examining the potential associations of dietary "Phytochemical Index" (PI) and polyphenol intake with obesity and diabetes-related parameters. Materials and Methods: The case-control study involved 331 participants (156 overweight/obese and 175 normal weight), aged 18–50 years. Dietary intake was assessed using the 24-hr dietary recall method, and the PI score was calculated as the percentage of energy intake provided by phytochemical-rich foods. Polyphenol intakes were calculated using Phenol-Explorer and U.S. Department of Agriculture databases. Anthropometrical measurements were taken, serum glucose, insulin, and lipid profiles were analyzed, homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) was calculated, and blood pressure was measured. Linear regression analyses were used to examine the potential associations. Results: Participants with higher PI scores had higher total and some sub-classes polyphenol intakes compared with lower ones (P < 0.05, for each). Dietary PI score was not associated with any of the anthropometrical measurements; however, total polyphenol and flavonoids intakes were inversely associated with body mass index (β = −0.269, P = 0.049; β = −0.262, P = 0.048; respectively), waist circumference (β = −0.127, P = 0.021; β = −0.130, P = 0.016; respectively), and waist-to-hip ratio (β = −20.724, P = 0.032; β = −22.199, P = 0.018; respectively) after adjusting for potential confounders. Either dietary PI score or total and sub-class polyphenol intakes were not associated with a better metabolic profile, except for the lignan intake, which was inversely associated with HOMA-IR (β = −0.048, P = 0.011). Conclusions: Higher dietary polyphenol intake may have potential in the prevention of obesity and diabetes, and validated practical tools are essential for the assessment of polyphenol intake in clinical practice. Background: Given the fundamental physiological differences between the sexes, this study aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on ventilatory defects stratified by sex. Methods: We conducted a nationwide, pooled, cross-sectional study. Data from 45,788 participants (men, n = 15,859; women, n = 29,929) aged 30 years or more were obtained from the Taiwan Biobank. Age–sex-adjusted and multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of developing impaired pulmonary function (restrictive or obstructive ventilatory defects) in individuals with or without metabolic syndromes. Separate models were also used to estimate the effect of metabolic syndrome scores and the effect of individual metabolic abnormalities on the risk of restrictive ventilatory defects. Results: The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was estimated to be 15.9% in Taiwan, much higher in men than in women (18.6% versus 14.4%). A significant association was observed between metabolic syndromes and the risk of restrictive ventilatory defects. The risk of developing a restrictive ventilator defect was 35% higher in participants with metabolic syndromes (odds ratio, 1.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.26–1.45) than in those without metabolic syndromes. Elevated blood pressure and a triglycerides abnormality were important predictors of restrictive ventilator defects. Sex-stratified subgroup analyses of the individual metabolic abnormalities indicated that men with abdominal obesity and women with dysglycemia were more likely to develop restrictive ventilatory defects. Conclusions: Our study's evidence suggested that metabolic syndromes were important predictors of impaired pulmonary function and an increased risk of developing restrictive ventilatory defects, and its risk increased with increasing numbers of metabolic abnormalities. Background: Metabolic syndrome (MetSy) is characterized by the presence of obesity, hypertension, altered glucose metabolism, and/or increased non-HDL cholesterol. This study aimed at elucidating the association between obesity with subclinical target organ damage and biochemical parameters included in MetSy pathogenesis. Methods: This study included 130 apparently healthy subjects. Plasma levels of oxidized-LDL-cholesterol (ox-LDL-Chol), nitric oxide (NO) metabolites, inducible NO synthase (iNOS), and plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) were measured. Non-invasive assessment of liver disease included fatty liver index (FLI) and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) fibrosis score. Carotid artery plaques were assessed by color Doppler imaging. Results: A total of 65 patients with MetSy were included in the MetSy group, while 65 without MetSy entered the control group. Ox-LDL-Chol levels were higher in the MetSy group compared to the control group, regardless of obesity. Levels of NO metabolites were similar in obese and non-obese patients with MetSy, but lower than in the control group. Obese patients with MetSy had higher iNOS values compared to non-obese ones, with similar PAI-1 levels. NAFLD was present in all obese patients with MetSy compared to 70% of non-obese subjects. Hypertension, higher values of waist-to-hip ratio, PAI-1, and remnant cholesterol were associated with NAFLD. Finding of asymptomatic carotid plaques was associated with patients' age, hypertension, and higher waist-to-hip ratio. Conclusion: MetSy and obesity significantly alter the levels of NO metabolites, iNOS, ox-LDL-Chol, and PAI-1. Existing research shows an inconsistent correlation between whole-grain intake and obesity risk, with limited study on the dose–response relationship. Here, we aimed to examine this association and dose–response relationship among U.S. adults who participated in a NHANES (2003–2018). The intake of whole grain was collected and calculated from two rounds of 24 h dietary recall. Obesity was categorized based on body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). Weighted multivariable logistic regression models were used to calculate the odds of obesity according to whole-grain intake, and the dose–response relationship was modeled by restricted cubic spline regression. Among the 27,862 participants, 38.3% had general obesity, while 58.3% had abdominal obesity. After multivariate adjustment of potential confounders, the participants in the highest quintile of whole-grain intake had a lower prevalence of general obesity (OR 0.79; 95% CI 0.72–0.88) and abdominal obesity (OR 0.80; 95% CI 0.73–0.89) compared with those in the lowest category. Spline regression showed an inversely linear dose–response association between whole-grain intake and the prevalence of general obesity and abdominal obesity. In conclusion, a higher whole-grain intake was associated with lower odds of obesity, both general and abdominal. Background: Recent studies on the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and obesity have reported conflicting results. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the association of obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori infection. Methods: A cross-sectional study of 1568 participants aged 20 to 85 was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999–2000. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the association of general obesity as defined by body mass index (BMI), abdominal obesity as defined by waist circumference (WC) and waist-height ratio (WHtR), and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori seropositivity. Subgroup analyses stratified by age were conducted to explore age-specific differences in this association. Results: After grouping individuals according to their WHtR, the prevalence rate of WHtR ≥ 0.5 in H. pylori-seropositive participants was significantly higher than that in H. pylori-seronegative participants (79.75 vs. 68.39, P < 0.001). The prevalence of H. pylori seropositivity in non-abdominal obesity and abdominal obesity defined by WHtR was 24.97% and 31.80%, respectively (P < 0.001). In the subgroup analysis, the adjusted association between abdominal obesity, as defined by the WHtR, and H. pylori seropositivity was significant in subjects aged < 50 years (OR = 2.23; 95% CI, 1.24–4.01; P = 0.01) but not in subjects aged ≥ 50 years (OR = 0.84; 95% CI, 0.35–1.99; P = 0.66). Subjects older than 50 years old had an OR (95% CI) for metabolically healthy obesity of 0.04 (0.01–0.35) compared with the control group. H. pylori seropositivity was consistently not associated with obesity as defined by BMI. Introduction: Frequent use of thermally abused cooking oil (TACO) increases risk of obesity, hyperlipidemia, cancer, and hypertension due to the presence of hazardous compounds in TACO. These compounds are formed from the oxidation and hydrolysis processes with repeated heating of TACO. Public has less awareness of the detrimental effect of TACO. Thus, it is essential to investigate the levels of knowledge and practice related to TACO use and further determine its association with serum lipid profile, body composition, and waist circumference among hyperlipidemia patients. Materials and methods:: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 197 hyperlipidemia patients in Hospital Universiti Sains Malaysia. Parameters assessed were medical history, serum lipid profile, anthropometry, body composition, knowledge and practice of TACO. Serum lipid profiles were acquired from medical folder. Results: Out of 197 respondents, there were 84.3% of them had high level of knowledge but still 64.5% of them practising TACO moderately. There were significant association between total cholesterol and fat free mass as well as between HDL-cholesterol with fat mass, fat free mass and waist circumference. Significant association was also observed between the fat mass and waist circumference, as well as between fat free mass and waist circumference. However, there was no significant association between knowledge and practice of TACO, serum lipid profile, body composition, and waist circumference. Conclusion: Use of TACO was still high although respondents knew it was hazardous to health. Background: The leading cause of death in older people is cardiovascular diseases. Several studies have found that neck circumference (NC) is a simple anthropometric marker associated with adiposity. The aim of this study is to estimate and validate NC cut-off points as adiposity markers and analyze their association with cardiovascular and chronic metabolic diseases in older people. Methods: A cross-sectional study in 358 non-disabled, community-dwelling older people (71.7 ± 3.9 years) living in Santiago de Chile and participating in the HTSMayor study was conducted. Measurements of body composition and cardiovascular risks were evaluated. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves and multiple logistic regression models were used to evaluate the association of NC with cardiovascular and chronic metabolic diseases. NC cut-off points were obtained to predict obesity, abdominal obesity, and adiposity. Results: The best performance values of neck circumference relative to obesity and adiposity were obtained with respect to abdominal obesity (40.6 cm in men and 34.2 cm in women). Higher NC values were associated with a higher area under the curve (AUC) for men and women (men: AUC = 0.84; women: AUC = 0.86). NC was significantly associated with a higher risk for diabetes mellitus (OR = 1.95), hypertension (OR = 2.42), acute myocardial infarction (OR = 4.36), and comorbidities (OR = 2.01), and a lower risk for sarcopenia (OR = 0.35). Conclusions: This study shows that NC is a useful tool for detecting abdominal obesity, obesity, and adiposity in older people and that a higher NC increases the risk of chronic diseases. To assess the association between dietary advanced glycation end products (dAGEs) versus body composition and anthropometric variables. Body composition (dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry), anthropometry, and habitual food intake were cross-sectionally evaluated in women with excess body weight and body fat. Mean dAGEs content was estimated using a database containing the Nԑ-(carboxymethyl)lysine (CML) content of 549 foods, which was adjusted by mean energy intake, and categorized into low, medium, and high dAGEs, by the 10th and 50th percentiles of the sample. Associations were tested by linear regression adjusted for age, education, marital status, and physical activity level. Eighty participants had mean ± standard deviation dAGEs 7.85 ± 2.65 AGEs kU/kcal. Compared with high dAGEs, women with low dAGEs ingested more carbohydrate (62% vs. 50% of calories, p < 0.001) and fiber (≈25 g vs. ≈18 g, p = 0.027) and less protein (13% vs. 17% of calories, p = 0.006) and fat (26% vs. 33% of calories, p = 0.011). Women with low dAGEs had waist/hip ratio 0.05 higher than those with high dAGEs (R2 = 0.256, p = 0.005). Low dAGEs relative to medium (p = 0.009) and high (p = 0.002) dAGEs was associated with a ≈5% gynoid fat reduction (R2 = 0.164). Background: Childhood overweight and obesity is a global concern and has increased in Spain over the last decades. Combinations of lifestyle behaviors (i.e., diet, sleep, and sedentarism) are highly related to weight status. Therefore, this study aimed to identify lifestyle patterns among children from Madrid City, and analyze associations with the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and abdominal obesity, considering socio-economic factors. Methods: A cross-sectional analysis was conducted on 4545 children from the ENPIMAD study with data on diet, sleep, anthropometric, and socio-economic variables. K-means cluster analysis was used to identify lifestyle clusters, and logistic regressions were used to examine the associations between socio-economic indicators and cluster membership, and between clusters and weight status. Results: Findings show three lifestyle clusters (healthy, mixed, and unhealthy), with boys and older children more represented in the unhealthy cluster. Food insecurity and low socio-economic status were associated with unhealthier clusters in boys and girls. Children in unhealthier clusters were more likely to have obesity and abdominal obesity. However, these associations disappeared in girls after controlling for food insecurity. Conclusion: These results provide insight into the combination of behaviors and socioeconomic factors associated with childhood obesity that may aid in the design of future interventions. Abstract Background Worsening renal function (WRF) is a frequent comorbidity of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, its relationship with abdominal obesity in terms of HFpEF remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the value of waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) in predicting WRF and examine the correlation between abdominal obesity and the risk of WRF in the HFpEF population. Methods Data were obtained from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist trial. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC ≥ 102 cm for men and ≥ 88 cm for women. WRF was defined as doubling of serum creatinine concentration from baseline. Restricted cubic splines and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the value of WC and BMI in predicting WRF. Cumulative incidence curves and cox proportional-hazards models were used to compare patients with and without abdominal obesity. Results We included 2,806 patients with HFpEF in our study (abdominal obesity, n: 2,065). Although baseline creatinine concentrations did not differ, patients with abdominal obesity had higher concentrations during a median follow-up time of 40.9 months. Unlike BMI, WC exhibited a steady linear association with WRF and was a superior WRF predictor. Patients with abdominal obesity exhibited a higher risk of WRF after multivariable adjustment (hazard ratio: 1.632; 95% confidence interval: 1.015–2.621; P: 0.043). Abstract Background Numerous reports indicate that both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are factors associated with cognitive impairment (CI). The objective was to assess the relationship between abdominal obesity as measured by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI) and CI in middle-aged and elderly patients with T2DM. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which a total of 1154 patients with T2DM aged ≥ 40 years were included. WHRadjBMI was calculated based on anthropometric measurements and CI was assessed utilizing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Participants were divided into CI group (n = 509) and normal cognition group (n = 645). Correlation analysis and binary logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between obesity-related indicators including WHRadjBMI, BMI as well as waist circumference (WC) and CI. Meanwhile, the predictive power of these indicators for CI was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results WHRadjBMI was positively correlated with MoCA scores, independent of sex. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for WHRadjBMI, BMI and WC were 0.639, 0.521 and 0.533 respectively, and WHRadjBMI had the highest predictive power for CI. Whether or not covariates were adjusted, one-SD increase in WHRadjBMI was significantly related to an increased risk of CI with an adjusted OR of 1.451 (95% CI: 1.261–1.671). BACKGROUND: Considering the role of visceral adipose tissue deposition in the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and the positive effect of metformin on weight loss, the effect of this drug on adipose tissue compartments in patients with HFpEF is interest.AIM: To study the effect of extended-release metformin (XR) on various fat depots and parameters of insulin-glucose homeostasis in patients with HFpEF, prediabetes and abdominal obesity (AO).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study design: single-center, open-ended, randomized, prospective, controlled. The registration numbers of the study in the NARNIS register RNI.25.004. The study included 64 people (50% men, median age 58 [55.25; 59.75] years) with HFpEF, prediabetes and AO. Objective To investigate the correlation between abdominal obesity and autoimmune thyroid disease in the view point of helper T cells and cytokines. Methods Clinical and laboratory data were collected from 108 patients with Hashimoto′s thyroiditis (HT) plus abdominal obesity and 122 patients of Hashimoto′s thyroiditis without abdominal obesity who visited the People′s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and also from the control population. Abdominal circumference was measured, and patients in the HT patients were grouped according to whether they were abdominally obese or not. The thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were detected, and the ratio of helper T cells and related cytokines were detected by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The abdominal circumference of the TgAb-positive group was higher than that of the TgAb-negative group (P＜0.05). Correlation analysis suggested that abdominal circumference was significantly and positively correlated with TgAb and IL-4 but negatively correlated with Th1. After correcting for gender and age, and abdominal obesity and IL-4 were risk factors for TgAb antibody positivity OR=3.080(95% CI:1.022-9.284) and OR=1.296(95% CI:1.022-9.284), both with P＜0.05. Conclusions Abdominal obesity may be an influential factor in TgAb antibody positivity, with larger abdominal circumference having higher TgAb antibody titers, lower Th1 levels, and higher IL-4 levels. Visceral adiposity may exacerbate autoimmune damage of thyroid tissue by disruption of helper T cell pathway.

Abstract Background People with the metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) phenotype have been confirmed to significantly increase the risk of unfavorable health consequences. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between traditional and novel anthropometric indices with the MONW phenotype and compare the predictive ability of different anthropometric indices in identifying individuals with the MONW phenotype. Methods This cross-sectional study involved a total of 26,332 participants aged 18 years or older with a normal weight from Nanjing, China. Sociodemographic information, biochemical measurements, and anthropometric indices were collected. The novel body fat anthropometric indices included body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), abdominal volume index (AVI), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), body adiposity index (BAI), conicity index (CI), waist-hip-height ratio (WHHR), as well as traditional indices such as waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).The prevalence ratio (PR) from modified poisson regression and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) were conducted to compare the association and predictive capacity of different obesity indicators for the MONW phenotype. Abstract Background The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) keeps increasing annually worldwide. Non-invasive assessment tools for evaluating the risk and severity of the disease are still limited. Insulin resistance (IR) and abdominal obesity (ABO) are closely related to NAFLD. Methods A retrospective large-scale, population-based study was conducted based on the data from the 2017–2018 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Three ABO indices, namely lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral obesity index (VAI), waist circumference-triglyceride index (WTI), and three IR indices, including triglyceride glucose index (TyG), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), were analyzed and compared for their relationships with NAFLD based on weighted multivariable logistic regression, spearman correlation heatmap, smooth curve fittings. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic capability of these indices for NAFLD. Differences among the AUCs were calculated and compared by Delong test. Results In total, 3095 participants were included in our study among which 1368 adults were diagnosed with NAFLD. All six indices presented positive associations with NAFLD. There was a claw-shaped curve between HOMA-IR, VAI, LAP and NAFLD while a smooth semi-bell curve was observed in TyG, METS-IR and WTI. LAP and HOMA-IR had the best diagnostic capability for NAFLD (LAP: AUC = 0.8, Youden index = 0.48; HOMA-IR: AUC = 0.798, Youden index = 0.472) while VAI (AUC = 0.728, Youden index = 0.361) showed the lowest predictive value. The correlation heat map indicated positive correlations between all six indices and liver function, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis severity. In the NAFLD group, IR indicators presented a stronger association with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared with ABO indices. Conclusions All six indices can screen NAFLD withLAP and HOMA-IR being possibly optimal predictors. IR indices may be more sensitive to identify acute hepatic injury in NAFLD patients than ABO indices.

Aim. To study the relationship and predictive value of integral metabolic indices of obesity in the identification of ectopic obesity.Material and methods. The study included 326 patients (146 men and 180 women, mean age 61±9 years). Anthropometric data, degree of obesity, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), body obesity index (BAI), visceral obesity index (VAI), lipid accumulation index (LAP), triglycerides-glucose index (TyG) was assessed. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) volume, pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) volume and thickness of perirenal fat tissue (PRF) were assessed with CT.Results. Patients were divided into groups: with isolated ectopic obesity (iEO) (n=17); with isolated abdominal obesity (iAO) (n=74); with EO variants: pericardial (PCO) (n=31), perivascular (PVO) (n=22) or perirenal (PRO) (n=33) with AO; with mixed ectopic obesity and AO (mEO+AO) (n=117), and patients without obesity (n=32). Significantly higher BMI, WC, SAD, and BAI indices were found in individuals with PCO+AO, PRO+AO and mEO+AO. The highest values of LAP were found in groups: PCO+AO, PVO+AO, PRO+AO. There was a correlation between ectopic fat depots and WC (r=0,62 for PAT, r=0,55 for PVAT and r=0,39 for PRF, p=0,01) and SAD (0,429, 0,329 and 0,435, respectively, p=0,01). Correlation was established between PAT, PRF and LAP (0,425 and 0,319, respectively, p=0,01). The highest AUC values>0,8 had models of WC and SAD in identification of PCO (0,801 and 0,801, respectively) and PRO (0,826 and 0,826, respectively). For PCO, the cut-off point of WC was 100,5 cm (specificity 72,9%, sensitivity 70,2%, p=0,000), SAD — 25 cm (specificity 73%, sensitivity 70,2%, p=0,000). For PRO, the cut-off of WC was 101 cm (specificity 71,4%, sensitivity 72,7%, p=0,000), SAD — 25 cm (specificity 71,4%, sensitivity 72,7%, p=0,000).Conclusion. Еctopic fat depots are related to the risk of metabolic disorders. Potential informative value of simple and accessible integral metabolic indices was established. WC>100,5 cm, SAD>25 cm may indicate to the presence of PCO; WC>101 cm, SAD>25 cm — to the presence of PRO.

Abstract Background Recent studies on the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and obesity have reported conflicting results. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the association of obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori infection. Methods A cross-sectional study of 1568 participants aged 20 to 85 was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999–2000. Objective: This study aims to examine the comparative effects of 75 min of volume-matched once-weekly and thrice-weekly high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on body adiposity in adults with central obesity. Methods: This assessor-blinded, three-arm, randomized controlled trial will recruit 315 physically inactive adults with central obesity (aged ≥18 years, body mass index ≥23, waist circumference ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women). Participants will be randomly allocated to the once-weekly HIIT, thrice-weekly HIIT or usual care control group. Participants in the HIIT groups will receive weekly exercise training sessions for 16 weeks, prescribed either once or three times weekly. Each HIIT session will consist of a supervised program of four 4-min high-intensity intervals at 85%–95% peak heart rate (HRpeak) interspersed with 3-min active recovery intervals at 50%–70% HRpeak. Participants in the once-weekly HIIT group will perform the 25-min HIIT bout three times with a break between each 25-min HIIT bout. The usual care control group will receive bi-weekly health education classes. The outcome assessments will be conducted at baseline, 16 weeks (post-intervention) and 32 weeks (follow-up). The primary outcome will be total body adiposity assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The secondary outcome measures will include markers of cardiovascular and metabolic health (body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, blood pressure, and blood lipids), mental health, cognitive performance, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, habitual physical activity, diet, medication, adverse events and adherence to the intervention. Impact of the project: The findings from this study are expected to consolidate the therapeutic efficacy of HIIT for the management of central obesity and inform the comparative compliance, feasibility and suitability of once-weekly and thrice-weekly HIIT as exercise strategies to manage obesity. In particular, the present study is expected to provide a novel perspective on the utility of low-frequency HIIT (i.e., once-weekly) as an effective and sustainable exercise strategy to tackle the obesity pandemic. The anticipated findings will hold substantial translational value by informing public health policies and enhancing exercise compliance in the physically inactive obese population. The association between body shape and depressive symptoms has been reported in adults. The present study aimed to investigate the association between body shape-specific abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms among multi-regional Asian adults. The 2011–2012 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and 2022–2023 Hangzhou study were used as the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. Body shape was assessed by body mass index categories. Abdominal obesity was defined as a body shape index (ABSI) ≥ 75th centile. Depression was measured using 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale short 15-item version, respectively. General linear and multinomial logistic models were used to explore the association of ABSI, abdominal obesity with depressive scores and presence, respectively. A total of 12,229 and 1210 participants were included in the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. A non-linear reverse L-shaped association was found between ABSI and depressive scores. Participants with abdominal obesity had higher depressive scores (β = 0.05, 95%CI = 0.01–0.09; and β = 0.13, 95%CI = 0.01–0.24; respectively). Stratified analyses showed that abdominal obesity was associated with higher depressive scores (β = 0.09, 95%CI = 0.00–0.17; and β = 0.25, 95%CI = 0.05–0.46; respectively) and presence (OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.02–2.10; and OR = 3.95, 95%CI = 1.58–9.84; respectively) in overweight adults. Furthermore, abdominal obesity was associated with depressive symptoms among overweight females, but not among males. Causal links weren't addressed because of the observational study design. Abdominal obesity exhibited a positive association with depressive symptoms among Asian overweight adults, particularly in females. Context Obesity has emerged as a global health issue for the pediatric population, increasing the need to investigate physiopathological aspects to prevent the appearance of its cardiometabolic complications. Chrononutrition is a field of research in nutritional sciences that investigates the health impact of 3 different dimensions of feeding behavior: regularity of meals, frequency, and timing of food intake. Objective We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between chrononutrition in children and adolescents and the risk of overweight/obesity or a cluster of metabolic abnormalities related to glucose and lipid metabolism, blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease risk. Data Extraction A literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library for relevant articles published before August 2022. Data Analysis A total of 64 articles were included in the narrative synthesis (47 cross-sectional and 17 cohort studies), while 16 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that non–daily breakfast consumers (≤6 d/wk) had a higher risk of overweight/obesity (odds ratio [OR], 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08–1.82] compared with daily breakfast eaters (7 d/wk). Similarly, irregular breakfast consumption (only 0-to-3 times/wk) increased the risk of abdominal obesity (waist-to-height ratio ≥ 0.5) compared with regular consumption (5-to-7 times/wk) (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.26–1.49). There was evidence to suggest that a regular frequency of meal consumption (≥4 times/d) is preventive against overweight/obesity development compared with fewer meals (≤3 times/d) (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.70–0.97). In the narrative synthesis, snacking habits showed controversial results, while food timing was the most understudied dimension. Conclusion Overall, our data indicate a potential implication of chrononutrition in affecting pediatric metabolic health; however, the evidence of this association is limited and heterogeneous. Further prospective and intervention studies with a consistent approach to categorize the exposure are needed to elucidate the importance of chrononutrition for pediatric metabolic health. Our aim was to explore the potential relationship between SII and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. We utilized a weighted multivariable logistic regression model to investigate the relationship between SII and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. Generalized additive models were employed to test for non-linear associations. Subsequently, we constructed a two-piecewise linear regression model and conducted a recursive algorithm to calculate inflection points. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed. A total of 7,880 U.S. adult participants from NHANES 2011-2018 were recruited for this study. In the regression model adjusted for all confounding variables, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the association between SII/100 and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity, were 1.03 (1.01, 1.06) and 1.04 (1.01, 1.08) respectively. There was a non-linear and reverse U-shaped association between SII/100 and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity, with inflection points at 7.32 and 9.98 respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed before the inflection points, while significant negative correlations were found after the inflection points. There was a statistically significant interaction in the analysis of age, hypertension, and diabetes. Moreover, a notable interaction is observed between SII/100 and abdominal obesity within non-Hispanic Asian populations. In adults from the United States, there is a positive correlation between SII and the high risk of obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. Abstract Purpose There is a major epidemic of obesity, and many obese patients suffer from respiratory symptoms and disease. However, limited research explores the associations between abdominal obesity and lung function indices, yielding mixed results. This study aims to analyze the association between waist circumference (WC), an easily measurable marker of abdominal obesity, and lung function parameters in middle-aged and older adults using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods This study utilized data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2012, with a total sample size of 6089 individuals. A weighted multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between WC and three pulmonary function parameters. Additionally, a weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting were applied to capture any potential nonlinear relationship within this association. Results After considering all confounding variables, it was observed that for each unit increase in WC, in males, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) increased by 23.687 ml, Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) increased by 12.029 ml, and the FEV1/FVC ratio decreased by 0.140%. In females, an increase in waist circumference by one unit resulted in an FVC increase of 6.583 ml and an FEV1 increase of 4.453 ml. In the overall population, each unit increase in waist circumference led to a FVC increase of 12.014 ml, an FEV1 increase of 6.557 ml, and a decrease in the FEV1/FVC ratio by 0.076%. By constructing a smooth curve, we identified a positive correlation between waist circumference and FVC and FEV1. Conversely, there was a negative correlation between waist circumference and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Conclusions Our findings indicate that in the fully adjusted model, waist circumference, independent of BMI, positively correlates with FVC and FEV1 while exhibiting a negative correlation with FEV1/FVC among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. These results underscore the importance of considering abdominal obesity as a potential factor influencing lung function in American middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract Background To understand how body composition in those with elevated body mass index impacts left ventricular function decline during cancer treatment, we determined the association between baseline body mass index (BMI), intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) with baseline to 3-month left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) change among women receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy for breast cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoma. Methods Women underwent potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy, such as doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel, and trastuzumab, for treatment of breast cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoma. We obtained magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of body composition and cardiac function prior to treatment, and then a repeat MRI for cardiac function assessment at three months into treatment. Analyses and assessment of abdominal adipose tissue volumes and LVEF outcomes were conducted by independent reviewers blinded to all patient identifiers. A general linear model was created to examine associations between adipose tissue depots, BMI, and 3-month LVEF change. Results Women (n = 210) aged 56 ± 11 years with breast cancer, lymphoma, and sarcoma were enrolled (n = 195, 14, 1 respectively). Baseline BMI, IAT, and SAT fat were independently associated with 3-month LVEF declines (p = 0.001 to 0.025 for all). After adjusting for baseline cardiovascular disease risk factors, BMI, IAT, and SAT, BMI remained the only variable associated with 3-month LVEF decline (p = 0.047). Conclusions These results suggest that factors other than abdominal adipose tissue or traditional cardiovascular risk factors may contribute to 3-month declines in LVEF among women with elevated BMI receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy. Abstract Background Obesity is associated with chronic low-grade inflammation, which is linked to cancer development. Abdominal obesity (a body mass index, ABSI), however, has unusually been associated inversely with cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM), while general obesity (body mass index, BMI) is associated positively. Leucocytes participate in inflammation and are higher in obesity, but prospective associations of leucocytes with cutaneous malignant melanoma are unclear. Methods We examined the prospective associations of neutrophil, lymphocyte, and monocyte counts (each individually), as well as the prospective associations of ABSI and BMI, with cutaneous malignant melanoma in UK Biobank. We used multivariable Cox proportional hazards models and explored heterogeneity according to sex, menopausal status, age (≥ 50 years at recruitment), smoking status, ABSI (dichotomised at the median: ≥73.5 women; ≥79.8 men), BMI (normal weight, overweight, obese), and time to diagnosis. Results During a mean follow-up of 10.2 years, 2174 CMM cases were ascertained in 398,450 participants. There was little evidence for associations with neutrophil or lymphocyte counts. Monocyte count, however, was associated inversely in participants overall (HR = 0.928; 95%CI: 0.888–0.971; per one standard deviation increase; SD = 0.144*109/L women; SD = 0.169*109/L men), specifically in older participants (HR = 0.906; 95%CI: 0.862–0.951), and more clearly in participants with low ABSI (HR = 0.880; 95%CI: 0.824–0.939), or with BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2 (HR = 0.895; 95%CI: 0.837–0.958 for overweight; HR = 0.923; 95%CI: 0.848–1.005 for obese). ABSI was associated inversely in pre-menopausal women (HR = 0.810; 95%CI: 0.702–0.935; SD = 4.95) and men (HR = 0.925; 95%CI: 0.867–0.986; SD = 4.11). BMI was associated positively in men (HR = 1.148; 95%CI: 1.078–1.222; SD = 4.04 kg/m2). There was little evidence for heterogeneity according to smoking status. The associations with monocyte count and BMI were retained to at least 8 years prior to diagnosis, but the association with ABSI was observed up to 4 years prior to diagnosis and not for longer follow-up time. Conclusions Monocyte count is associated prospectively inversely with the risk of developing CMM in older individuals, while BMI is associated positively in men, suggesting a mechanistic involvement of factors related to monocytes and subcutaneous adipose tissue in melanoma development. An inverse association with ABSI closer to diagnosis may reflect reverse causality or glucocorticoid resistance.

Abstract Background Despite a growing body of observational studies indicating a potential link between metabolic syndrome and colorectal cancer, a definitive causal relationship has yet to be established. This study aimed to elucidate the causal relationship between metabolic syndrome and colorectal cancer through Mendelian randomization. Methods We screened for instrumental variables associated with metabolic syndrome and its diagnostic components and with colorectal cancer through the use of a genome-wide association study database, and conducted a preliminary Mendelian randomization analysis. To corroborate the dependability of our conclusions, an additional dataset was used for replication analysis in a Mendelian randomization method, which was further integrated with a meta-analysis. Results Preliminary analysis using the inverse variance weighted method revealed positive correlations between metabolic syndrome (OR [95% CI] = 1.37[1.15–1.63], P = 5.02 × 10–4) and waist circumference (OR [95% CI] = 1.39[1.21–1.61], P = 7.38 × 10–6) and the risk of colorectal cancer. Replication analysis also revealed the same results: metabolic syndrome (OR [95% CI] = 1.24[1.02–1.51], P = 0.030) and waist circumference (OR [95% CI] = 1.23[1.05–1.45], P = 0.013). A body shape index (ABSI) is a novel anthropometric index derived by specific algorithms based on measurements of height, weight, and waist circumference. Central obesity has become more important for predicting the occurrence and mortality of cardiovascular events with the increasing number of overweight and obese people. Obesity contributes to the development of cardiovascular diseases such as atherosclerosis, hypertension, coronary heart disease and even death by stimulating the production of inflammatory factors that induce chronic inflammatory responses, insulin resistance, metabolic disorders and oxidative stress pathways. ABSI is strongly related to abdominal obesity and can predict atherosclerosis in some populations, but it is also affected by population characteristics, such as the difference in the correlation between ABSI and atherosclerosis in populations of different regions, genders and ages. It is of great significance for early identification of high-risk populations and rational prevention and treatment of cardiovascular diseases to clarify the relationship between ABSI and atherosclerosis.
