Background: Physical activity of any amount results in substantial health benefits. However, public awareness of physical activity benefits in chronic diseases is inadequate in India. Prediabetes is a significant health issue on a global scale. Visceral fat (VF) is considered as an early predictor of prediabetes. Ethnicity and race have a substantial impact on VF. Hence, this study intended to evaluate the effect of a customized physical activity promotion program on VF and glycemic parameters in individuals with prediabetes. Methods: In the current, parallel group randomized controlled trial, a total of 158 participants were recruited: 79 in intervention and 79 in control group. The study included the prediabetes individuals based on American Diabetes Association criteria. Participants from the intervention group received the customized physical activity promotion program for 24 weeks. The primary outcome measures of the study were VF level and glycemic parameters that included fasting blood sugar and glycosylated hemoglobin. Two-way mixed analysis of variance was used to study the mean difference of an outcome between 2 groups over time. Results: The study found a statistically significant interaction between the intervention and times on VF level, F1,136 = 23.564, fasting blood sugar levels, F1,136 = 8.762, and glycosylated hemoglobin levels, F1,136 = 64.582 at the end of 24 weeks (P <.05). Conclusions: This study concluded that a customized physical activity promotion program was effective in reducing VF in individuals with prediabetes as compared with controls. Antioxidant-rich diets serve as protective factors in preventing obesity. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) represents a novel, comprehensive metric for assessing the antioxidant capacity of diets. Our objective is to investigate the relationship between the CDAI and obesity prevalence among adults in the United States. Dietary and anthropometric information about adults aged 20 years and older were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018. The CDAI was derived from six dietary antioxidants. Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI, kg/m2) ≥ 30 kg/m2, and abdominal obesity as a waist circumference (WC, cm) ≥ 102 cm for men and ≥ 88 cm for women. The relationship between CDAI and obesity, including abdominal obesity, was analyzed using logistic regression and subgroup analyses. A total of 25,553 participants were analyzed. With higher tertiles of the CDAI, both obesity (41.28% vs. 38.62 vs. 35.09%, P < 0.001) and abdominal obesity (63.75% vs. 59.54 vs. 52.09%, P < 0.001) prevalence notably declined. Adjusting for multiple confounders, the CDAI was found to be independently linked to obesity (OR = 0.980, 95%CI = 0.971–0.989, P < 0.001) and abdominal obesity (OR = 0.972, 95%CI = 0.963–0.982, P < 0.001) risks. Subgroup analyses revealed a stronger relationship between CDAI and obesity in non-hypertensive individuals and a more significant association with abdominal obesity in women and those without hypertension. Our findings reveal a negative relationship between CDAI levels and both general and abdominal obesity. Additional extensive research is necessary to investigate CDAI's contribution to obesity. The association between body shape and depressive symptoms has been reported in adults. The present study aimed to investigate the association between body shape-specific abdominal obesity and depressive symptoms among multi-regional Asian adults. The 2011–2012 China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study and 2022–2023 Hangzhou study were used as the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. Body shape was assessed by body mass index categories. Abdominal obesity was defined as a body shape index (ABSI) ≥ 75th centile. Depression was measured using 10-item Centre for Epidemiological Studies Depression Scale and Geriatric Depression Scale short 15-item version, respectively. General linear and multinomial logistic models were used to explore the association of ABSI, abdominal obesity with depressive scores and presence, respectively. A total of 12,229 and 1210 participants were included in the discovery and validation datasets, respectively. A non-linear reverse L-shaped association was found between ABSI and depressive scores. Participants with abdominal obesity had higher depressive scores (β = 0.05, 95%CI = 0.01–0.09; and β = 0.13, 95%CI = 0.01–0.24; respectively). Stratified analyses showed that abdominal obesity was associated with higher depressive scores (β = 0.09, 95%CI = 0.00–0.17; and β = 0.25, 95%CI = 0.05–0.46; respectively) and presence (OR = 1.46, 95%CI = 1.02–2.10; and OR = 3.95, 95%CI = 1.58–9.84; respectively) in overweight adults. Furthermore, abdominal obesity was associated with depressive symptoms among overweight females, but not among males. Causal links weren't addressed because of the observational study design. Abdominal obesity exhibited a positive association with depressive symptoms among Asian overweight adults, particularly in females. This study aimed to investigate the impact of physical activity indicators monitored by the POLAR accelerometer on body obesity indicators, metabolic syndrome parameters, and energy metabolism hormones in postmenopausal women. Was included 71 participants from this study program (68.8 ± 4.3 years). We divided participants into LPA and MVPA groups based on their level of moderate to vigorous physical activity per week; Physical activity levels over 7 days were assessed using a POLAR accelerometer, with daily step counts and sedentary time recorded. Measurements included waist circumference, visceral fat volume, body fat percentage, blood pressure, fasting blood glucose, triglyceride levels, HDL cholesterol, and energy metabolism hormone levels (leptin, resistin, adiponectin). The MVPA group displayed lower waist circumference, body fat percentage, abdominal fat, and BMI compared to the LPA group (p < 0.05). A significant negative correlation was observed between daily step count and obesity indicators, including waist circumference (r = -0.301), body fat percentage (r = -0.295), abdominal fat (r = -0.318), and BMI (r = -0.238). Conversely, sedentary time showed a positive correlation with obesity indicators such as waist circumference (r = 0.258), body fat percentage (r = 0.239), and abdominal fat (r = 0.244). Moreover, daily step count exhibited a significant negative correlation with leptin levels (r = -0.245), while sedentary time was positively correlated with the energy metabolic factor leptin (r = 0.279). Waist circumference demonstrated significant positive correlations with triglycerides, blood glucose, adiponectin, resistin, and leptin levels. Postmenopausal women who engage in at least 150 min of MVPA weekly show lower obesity indices. There is a significant correlation between physical activity levels and obesity indicators, which relate to metabolic syndrome and energy metabolism factors. Background: Obesity has emerged as an epidemic and is known to be associated with multiple co-morbidities, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Body-mass index (BMI) has been traditionally used to assess obesity in an individual but abdominal obesity markers are being claimed to have a stronger association with adverse cardiovascular outcome as compared to BMI. However, there are only a few studies that have evaluated these indices in Asian Indians. Aims and Objectives: The study was conducted to compare BMI and waist measurement based indices among hypertensive adults and their association with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The secondary objectives were to determine any gender-based differences among anthropometric indices and improved predictability on adding waistbased indices to BMI. Materials and Methods: An observational study was conducted to analyse association of anthropometric indices such as BMI, A body shape index (ABSI), Waist--hip ratio (WHR), Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), Lean body mass-to-weight ratio, and Waist circumference (WC), with risk of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and coronary artery disease (CAD) in Indian hypertensive adults. Results: In total, 400 participants were included and female subjects were noted to have higher prevalence of obesity in our study population. Only 33.25% patients had BMI in recommended range and the numbers were even lower for WHtR and WHR. BMI and ABSI were found to have a weak association with development of co-morbidities while measures of abdominal obesity such as WHR, WC, and WHtR were found to have consistently strong association with CVA and CAD with high sensitivity and negative predictive values. Conclusion: More accurate markers of abdominal obesity can help in better assessment of cardiovascular risk among high-risk population to improve the overall outcome. Background: Obesity is as an important risk factor for chronic diseases. Metabolically healthy obesity (MHO) is considered a benign state. The association between metabolic health and obesity categories and cancer risk remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between metabolic health status combined with obesity phenotypes and the risk of cancer. Methods: Data from 91,834 participants in the Kailuan cohort were analyzed, excluding individuals with a body mass index (BMI) < 18.5 kg/m² and those with a history of cancer. Obesity phenotypes were classified based on BMI and waist circumference (WC) combined with metabolic health status, resulting in six phenotypes. Cox proportional hazard regression models were used to assess the association between metabolic health and obesity phenotypes with cancer risk and all-cause mortality. Results: The prevalence of metabolically healthy obesity and metabolically unhealthy obesity defined by BMI was 6.86% and 12.18%, while that defined by WC was 20.79% and 25.76%, respectively. Compared to metabolically healthy participants, individuals with an unhealthy metabolic status had a significantly higher risk of cancer (HR, 1.09; 95% CI, 1.03–1.15; p=0.004). The hazard ratios for cancer were 1.19, 1.23, 1.20, and 1.55 for individuals with one, two, three, and four metabolic disorders, respectively. Among those classified as metabolically unhealthy, both overweight and obesity were associated with a protective effect on cancer risk (HR, 0.88; 95% CI, 0.80–0.96; p=0.006 for overweight; HR, 0.87; 95% CI, 0.78–0.97; p=0.010 for obesity). However, abdominal obesity significantly increased cancer risk in both metabolically healthy and unhealthy participants. In subgroup analysis, simple obesity showed a protective trend against cancer in those with respiratory cancers, while abdominal obesity consistently posed a risk for various cancer types. Conclusion: Metabolically unhealthy status and abdominal obesity are risk factors for cancer and all-cause mortality, whereas simple obesity offers protective effects against cancer and all-cause mortality in metabolically unhealthy individuals. Objectives: The aim of this research was to evaluate changes in body composition, adipokine levels, and dyslipidemia parameters in males with abdominal obesity following two distinct interventions: exercise alone and exercise combined with an ad libitum diet. Methods: This study included 44 males with abdominal obesity (mean age 34.7 ± 5.5 years, waist circumference [WC] 110.3 ± 8.5, BMI 32.0 ± 3.9), who were randomly assigned to three groups: an experimental group engaging in aerobic-resistance exercise (II, n = 16), an experimental group engaging in aerobic-resistance exercise combined with an ad libitum high-protein, low-glycemic index carbohydrate diet (III, n = 16), both interventions lasting 6 weeks, and a control group without interventions (I, n = 12). Body composition metrics (body mass index [BMI], waist circumference [WC], body fat [BF], abdominal fat [ABD]) and fat-free mass [FFM], along with biochemical blood analyses (irisin [IR], omentin [OMEN], glucose [GLU], insulin [INS], LDL- and HDL-cholesterol), were measured at baseline and after the 6-week intervention. The effects of the interventions on the analyzed variables across groups were assessed using mixed ANOVA tests with post-hoc comparisons. Effect size (ES) was also calculated using partial eta squared (ηp2). Results: The intervention in group III resulted in a significant decrease in IR (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.03) by 41% and LDL-C (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.02) by 14%. These effects were associated with a reduction in BF (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.02) by 14%, ABD (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.03) by 31%, and WC (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.01) by 3%. In group II, decreases after 6 weeks of intervention were noted only in WC (p = 0.02, ηp2 = 0.01) by 1% and in INS (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.04) by 47%. No differences were found between groups. The use of low-glycemic index carbohydrates (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.06) and increased protein intake (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.30) led to changes in the fiber-to-energy value of the diet ratio (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.18) and a reduction in dietary energy value (p < 0.01, ηp2 = 0.13) by 23%, resulting in a greater energy deficit than in the II group. Conclusions: These findings highlight the effect of combining dietary and exercise interventions to achieve significant changes in body composition and metabolic parameters, even over a short period of intervention. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), the leading cause of end-stage renal disease, is associated with several metabolic derangements. Considering insulin resistance, evidence has shown higher prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MeS) in CKD. The aim of this study was to investigate association between the CKD and MeS. In this cross-sectional study, 450 individuals were included. Required clinical and laboratory data were recorded in questionnaires. MeS and CKD were defined according to NHLBI/AHA and KDIGO 2022 guidelines respectively. Increasing or decreasing trend for MeS among the means across quartiles of glomerular filtration rate was determined. Two-hundred twenty women and 230 men with mean age of 46.6 years were entered in this study. Patients with CKD were younger (42 years old versus 52, P < 0.001) and more active (1459.5 metabolic equivalence/min/week versus 1113.0). There was an increase in trend for MeS with decreasing GFR (PTrend = 0.002), which remained significant after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, HOMA-IR, and physical activity (PTrend = 0.049). Background: This study aimed to assess the longitudinal association between dynapenic abdominal obesity and new-onset arthritis among the middle-aged and older Chinese population. Methods: We included 6863 participants from the 2011 and 2015 waves of the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Dynapenia was defined as handgrip strength < 28 kg for males, and < 18 kg for females. Abdominal obesity was defined as a waist circumference ≥ 90 cm for males and ≥ 85 cm for females. Based on the definitions, all participants were divided into four groups: no dynapenia and no abdominal obesity (ND/NAO), abdominal obesity alone (ND/AO), dynapenia alone (D/NAO), and dynapenia and abdominal obesity (D/AO). The association between dynapenic abdominal obesity and new-onset arthritis was assessed by sex using the Poisson regression models. Results: After a four-year follow-up, 1272 (18.53%) participants reported new-onset arthritis. Those in the D/AO group had a significantly increased risk of new-onset arthritis compared to those in the ND/NAO group (adjusted relative risk (RR): 1.34, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.01–1.77). In females, the ND/AO (RR: 1.21, 95% CI: 1.03–1.43) and D/AO (RR: 1.39, 95% CI: 1.01–1.93) groups were associated with a higher risk of arthritis. This significant association was not observed in males. Conclusions: Our results indicated that the combined effect of dynapenia and abdominal obesity significantly increased the risk of new-onset arthritis in females, but this association was not observed in males. Objective: Central/Abdominal obesity is an important health problem that is growing all over the world. Abdominal obesity has been recognized as a main risk factor for cardiovascular and metabolic events. There are various measurements ranging from anthropometric indices to imaging methods for the determination of abdominal obesity. However, anthropometric studies involving older adults are scarce in the literature. The purpose of this study is to compare the current anthropometric measures used to evaluate abdominal obesity in older adults. Material and Method: In total, 104 outpatients aged 65 years or older were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. For any reason, patients with an indication for Dual-energy-X-ray Absorptiometry (DXA) were included. Anthropometric and hemodynamic measurements were taken. DXA was used to measure body composition, especially fat ratio. Results: The mean age of patients was 74.6-6.9. The ratio of adiposity determined by DXA, which was used as reference/gold standard method, was in the range of 3.8-52.5%. Mean value of adiposity was 31.5-10.9%. When gender and anthropometric indicators were compared, body mass index (BMI), waistto-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and body adiposity index (BAI) were significant (p<0.05); conicity index (CI), a new body shape index (ABSI) and abdominal volume index (AVI) were not significant (p>0.05). The best three anthropometric indicators that estimating the fat ratio in participants were; BMI (r=0.718, p<0.05), WHtR (r=0.503, p<0.05), and AVI (r=0.480, p<0.05), respectively. Conclusion: Many advanced diagnostic methods and medical devices, can not be used in primary healthcare clinics. Therefore, practical approaches that are most compatible with advanced research are coming to the fore. Context Obesity has emerged as a global health issue for the pediatric population, increasing the need to investigate physiopathological aspects to prevent the appearance of its cardiometabolic complications. Chrononutrition is a field of research in nutritional sciences that investigates the health impact of 3 different dimensions of feeding behavior: regularity of meals, frequency, and timing of food intake. Objective We carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the association between chrononutrition in children and adolescents and the risk of overweight/obesity or a cluster of metabolic abnormalities related to glucose and lipid metabolism, blood pressure, and cardiovascular disease risk. Data Extraction A literature search was performed using PubMed, EMBASE, and The Cochrane Library for relevant articles published before August 2022. Data Analysis A total of 64 articles were included in the narrative synthesis (47 cross-sectional and 17 cohort studies), while 16 studies were included in the meta-analysis. Meta-analysis showed that non–daily breakfast consumers (≤6 d/wk) had a higher risk of overweight/obesity (odds ratio [OR], 1.45; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.08–1.82] compared with daily breakfast eaters (7 d/wk). Similarly, irregular breakfast consumption (only 0-to-3 times/wk) increased the risk of abdominal obesity (waist-to-height ratio ≥ 0.5) compared with regular consumption (5-to-7 times/wk) (OR, 1.38; 95% CI, 1.26–1.49). There was evidence to suggest that a regular frequency of meal consumption (≥4 times/d) is preventive against overweight/obesity development compared with fewer meals (≤3 times/d) (OR, 0.83; 95% CI, 0.70–0.97). In the narrative synthesis, snacking habits showed controversial results, while food timing was the most understudied dimension. Conclusion Overall, our data indicate a potential implication of chrononutrition in affecting pediatric metabolic health; however, the evidence of this association is limited and heterogeneous. Further prospective and intervention studies with a consistent approach to categorize the exposure are needed to elucidate the importance of chrononutrition for pediatric metabolic health. Our aim was to explore the potential relationship between SII and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. We utilized a weighted multivariable logistic regression model to investigate the relationship between SII and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. Generalized additive models were employed to test for non-linear associations. Subsequently, we constructed a two-piecewise linear regression model and conducted a recursive algorithm to calculate inflection points. Additionally, subgroup analyses and interaction tests were performed. A total of 7,880 U.S. adult participants from NHANES 2011-2018 were recruited for this study. In the regression model adjusted for all confounding variables, the odds ratios (95% confidence intervals) for the association between SII/100 and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity, were 1.03 (1.01, 1.06) and 1.04 (1.01, 1.08) respectively. There was a non-linear and reverse U-shaped association between SII/100 and obesity, as well as abdominal obesity, with inflection points at 7.32 and 9.98 respectively. Significant positive correlations were observed before the inflection points, while significant negative correlations were found after the inflection points. There was a statistically significant interaction in the analysis of age, hypertension, and diabetes. Moreover, a notable interaction is observed between SII/100 and abdominal obesity within non-Hispanic Asian populations. In adults from the United States, there is a positive correlation between SII and the high risk of obesity, as well as abdominal obesity. (1) Background: High blood pressure (HBP), overweight, and obesity are common, growing public health problems worldwide. The aim of this study was to evaluate associations between changes in body weight status and HBP among Lithuanian children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. (2) Methods: In this study, we analysed data on blood pressure and anthropometric measurements of 2430 children and adolescents aged 8–18 years, who participated in both the baseline study conducted before the COVID-19 pandemic (from November 2019 to March 2020) and the follow-up study during the COVID-19 pandemic (from November 2021 to April 2022). Multivariate logistic regression analysis was used to estimate the associations between changes in weight status categories and HBP. (3) Results: At baseline, 17.1% of the subjects had overweight, 5.9% had obesity, 5.6% had abdominal obesity, and 23.7% had HBP, whereas at the follow-up, these percentages increased to 20.1%, 8.2%, 6.8%, and 27.4%, respectively. Compared to schoolchildren who maintained normal weight from baseline to the follow-up period, subjects who newly developed overweight/obesity and those who remained with persistent overweight/obesity had increased odds of HBP, with adjusted odds ratios (aORs) of 1.95 (p < 0.001) and 2.58 (p < 0.001), respectively. In subjects who transitioned from overweight/obesity to normal weight, the odds of HBP were slightly increased, with an aOR of 1.14 (p = 0.598), but the change was not statistically significant (p > 0.05). (4) Conclusions: This study observed an increase in the prevalence of overweight, obesity, and HBP among schoolchildren during the COVID-19 pandemic. The study also suggested that changes from normal body weight status at baseline to overweight/obesity during follow-up, especially persistent overweight/obesity, were associated with higher odds of HBP in Lithuanian children and adolescents during the COVID-19 pandemic. Background and Objectives: Age at menarche is related to various biological and socioeconomic factors in childhood. The aim of the study was to examine the association of age at menarche with general and abdominal obesity in young women. Materials and Methods: A transversal anthropometric survey was conducted with 102 females from 21 to 25 years of age. The surveyed traits included height, weight, waist circumference (WC) and hip circumference (HC). General obesity was assessed using the body mass index (BMI) and abdominal obesity by WC, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR) and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR). A retrospective method was used for collecting age at menarche data. Results: The average age at menarche is 12.80 years. Early menarcheal age (<12 years) is detected in 25.5% of young females, while late onset of menarche (>14 years) is recorded for 20.6% of subjects. Early menarche age subjects exhibit significantly higher BMI, WC and WHtR in comparison with their late menarche age peers. There is a significant negative correlation between BMI, WC and WHtR values and menarcheal age. Late age at menarche is associated with higher probability of underweight status (BMI < 18.5 and/or WHtR < 0.4). Conclusions: Age at menarche has a negative correlation with general and abdominal obesity. Young women with early age at menarche show statistically higher values of BMI, WC and WHtR, while those with late menarcheal age show greater susceptibility to becoming underweight. Obesity has become a global health problem. In recent years, the influence of dietary microbes in the obese population has attracted the attention of scholars. Our study aimed to investigate the link between live microbe intake and obesity in adults. Participants (aged over 20 years) for this study were from the 1999–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants were categorised into low, medium and high dietary live microbe intake groups. Linear regression was used to analyse the link between live microbe intake and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). Logistic regression was used to analyse the link between live microbe intake and obesity and abdominal obesity prevalence. Restricted cubic spline curves (RCS) were used to check whether there was a non-linear relationship between live microbe intake and obesity. A total of 42,749 participants were included in this study and the number of obese reached 15,463. We found that live microbe intake was negatively linked to BMI and WC. In models adjusted for all confounders, the high live microbe intake group had lower obesity (OR = 0.812, 95%CI: 0.754–0.873) and abdominal obesity prevalence (OR = 0.851, 95%CI: 0.785–0.923) than the lowest intake group. Upon further quantification of live microbe intake, we found similar results. RCS analyses showed that live microbe intake was nonlinearly negatively correlated with BMI, WC, obesity, and abdominal obesity prevalence (P for non-linearity < 0.05). Background: Numerous reports indicate that both obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) are factors associated with cognitive impairment (CI). The objective was to assess the relationship between abdominal obesity as measured by waist-to-hip ratio adjusted for body mass index (WHRadjBMI) and CI in middle-aged and elderly patients with T2DM. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted, in which a total of 1154 patients with T2DM aged ≥ 40 years were included. WHRadjBMI was calculated based on anthropometric measurements and CI was assessed utilizing the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Participants were divided into CI group (n = 509) and normal cognition group (n = 645). Correlation analysis and binary logistic regression were used to explore the relationship between obesity-related indicators including WHRadjBMI, BMI as well as waist circumference (WC) and CI. Meanwhile, the predictive power of these indicators for CI was estimated by receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves. Results: WHRadjBMI was positively correlated with MoCA scores, independent of sex. The Area Under the Curve (AUC) for WHRadjBMI, BMI and WC were 0.639, 0.521 and 0.533 respectively, and WHRadjBMI had the highest predictive power for CI. Whether or not covariates were adjusted, one-SD increase in WHRadjBMI was significantly related to an increased risk of CI with an adjusted OR of 1.451 (95% CI: 1.261–1.671). After multivariate adjustment, the risk of CI increased with rising WHRadjBMI quartiles (Q4 vs. Q1 OR: 2.980, 95%CI: 2.032–4.371, P for trend < 0.001). Conclusions: Our study illustrated that higher WHRadjBMI is likely to be associated with an increased risk of CI among patients with T2DM. Background: Worsening renal function (WRF) is a frequent comorbidity of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF). However, its relationship with abdominal obesity in terms of HFpEF remains unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the value of waist circumference (WC) and body mass index (BMI) in predicting WRF and examine the correlation between abdominal obesity and the risk of WRF in the HFpEF population. Methods: Data were obtained from the Treatment of Preserved Cardiac Function Heart Failure with an Aldosterone Antagonist trial. Abdominal obesity was defined as WC ≥ 102 cm for men and ≥ 88 cm for women. WRF was defined as doubling of serum creatinine concentration from baseline. Restricted cubic splines and receiver operating characteristic curves were used to evaluate the value of WC and BMI in predicting WRF. Cumulative incidence curves and cox proportional-hazards models were used to compare patients with and without abdominal obesity. Results: We included 2,806 patients with HFpEF in our study (abdominal obesity, n: 2,065). Although baseline creatinine concentrations did not differ, patients with abdominal obesity had higher concentrations during a median follow-up time of 40.9 months. Unlike BMI, WC exhibited a steady linear association with WRF and was a superior WRF predictor. Patients with abdominal obesity exhibited a higher risk of WRF after multivariable adjustment (hazard ratio: 1.632; 95% confidence interval: 1.015–2.621; P: 0.043). • Higher intact fruit intake is inversely associated with visceral adipose tissue in US adults aged 18-59 years. • The nonlinear inverse association strengthens with intact fruit intake below 1.7 cups equivalent daily. • Our findings effectively characterize the typical American adult consumer using sample-weighted methodologies. Excess visceral adipose tissue (VAT) plays a crucial role in leading to obesity-related diseases. However, the association between fruit intake (excluding fruit juice) and VAT is not well-known. We aim to further explore this association in a large population. We hypothesized that higher intact fruit intake would be inversely associated with VAT. A total of 9582 adult participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey and the Food Patterns Equivalents Database 2011-2018 were included. Weighted linear regression models were utilized to evaluate the association between intact fruit intake (from two 24-hour dietary recalls) and VAT area (measured by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry). Subgroup analysis was conducted to test the robustness of the results. Restricted cubic spline analysis was performed to find the nonlinear association. The median of intact fruit intake was 0.32 cup-equivalent (eq)/d, and the mean of VAT was 104.87 ± 1.23 cm2. Intact fruit intake (increased by 1 cup-eq/d) demonstrated an inverse association with VAT area across three adjusted models, with β (95% confidence interval) values of –7(–8.49, –5.51), –6(–7.50, –4.51), and –3.02(–4.11, –1.94) in model 1, model 2, and model 3, respectively. Subgroup analysis revealed no interactions were found among age, sex, ethnicity, body mass index, and physical activity subgroups. Restricted cubic spline revealed the inverse association was more significant when intact fruit intake was less than 1.7 cups-eq/d. These findings suggest that increasing intact fruit consumption could be an effective public health strategy to mitigate VAT accumulation and associated health risks, advancing our understanding of dietary impacts on adiposity. A third of the pediatric population suffers from excess body weight and obesity, which are associated with such pathological conditions as hypertension, insulin resistance, hyperglycemia, type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, metabolic syndrome (MS) and early cardiovascular dysfunction. Waist circumference (WC) measurement is a simple noninvasive screening tool to identify children with abdominal obesity, MS, and increased cardiovascular risk. The purpose of the study was to develop age- and gender-specific WC percentiles for Ukrainian children aged 10–17 years and to determine possible WC cut-offs for detecting abdominal obesity. Materials and methods. 1566 children aged 10–17 were examined, 759 boys and 807 girls. According to the WHO protocol, WC was measured using a flexible centimeter tape in a standing position midway between the lower rib and the upper front edge of the ilium. The threshold point for detecting abdominal obesity was WC ≥ 90th percentile of the distribution according to age and sex (IDF Consensus, 2007). Results. Age and gender percentiles of WC and cut-off at the level of the 90th percentile in Ukrainian children and adolescents are presented. The importance of gender assessment of WC lies in the reliable difference of indicators in children aged 10–12 and 15–17 years and growth of parameters with age in both boys and girls. The need for age assessment of WC is due to increasing the 90th percentile indicators in girls aged 10–17 from 76 to 90.5 cm and in boys from 75.9 to 94 cm. The data obtained can serve as a source for screening and identifying children with abdominal obesity, increased metabolic risk and a better understanding of current trends in childhood obesity. It has been suggested that new WC reference values should be added to clinical examinations to help pediatricians and family physicians reduce cardiovascular risk in children. Conclusions. Abstract Background The global health crisis of obesity has prompted a need for better indicators of abdominal obesity than body mass index, with sagittal abdominal diameter emerging as a potential candidate. Nonetheless, the association between sagittal abdominal diameter-to-height ratio (SADHtR) and mortality remains inadequately established. Our objective was to contribute novel evidence to this association. Methods This study encompassed 12,572 participants aged 18–80 years from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011–2016. Mortality data were tracked until December 31, 2019. Weighted multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were employed to evaluate the association between SADHtR and all-cause mortality, with subgroup analyses conducted for result robustness. Results Following a median follow-up period of 69 months, each standard deviation (SD) increase in SADHtR was consistently associated with a higher risk of all-cause mortality across three models, yielding a hazard ratio (HR) and 95% confidence interval (CI) of 1.51(1.29,1.76) in model 3. Abstract Antioxidant-rich diets serve as protective factors in preventing obesity. The composite dietary antioxidant index (CDAI) represents a novel, comprehensive metric for assessing the antioxidant capacity of diets. Our objective is to investigate the relationship between the CDAI and obesity prevalence among adults in the United States. Dietary and anthropometric information about adults aged 20 years and older were obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 2007–2018. The CDAI was derived from six dietary antioxidants. Abstract Background Identifying children and adolescents with cardiometabolic risk at an early stage is crucial for effective treatment and prevention. From a practical perspective, this could be accomplished by assessing the presence of abdominal obesity, which serves as a surrogate indicator of increased cardiometabolic risk and is easy to measure. However, the assessment of abdominal obesity via waist circumference has not yet become a standard procedure in pediatric healthcare. The present study aimed to analyze the secular trends in increased cardiometabolic risk, as indicated by waist circumference among Spanish children and adolescents. Background: Obesity has emerged as an epidemic and is known to be associated with multiple co-morbidities, contributing to increased morbidity and mortality. Body-mass index (BMI) has been traditionally used to assess obesity in an individual but abdominal obesity markers are being claimed to have a stronger association with adverse cardiovascular outcome as compared to BMI. However, there are only a few studies that have evaluated these indices in Asian Indians. Aims and Objectives: The study was conducted to compare BMI and waist measurement based indices among hypertensive adults and their association with adverse cardiovascular outcomes. The secondary objectives were to determine any gender-based differences among anthropometric indices and improved predictability on adding waist-based indices to BMI. Materials and Methods: An observational study was conducted to analyse association of anthropometric indices such as BMI, A body shape index (ABSI), Waist–hip ratio (WHR), Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), Lean body mass-to-weight ratio, and Waist circumference (WC), with risk of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA) and coronary artery disease (CAD) in Indian hypertensive adults. Results: In total, 400 participants were included and female subjects were noted to have higher prevalence of obesity in our study population. Only 33.25% patients had BMI in recommended range and the numbers were even lower for WHtR and WHR. BMI and ABSI were found to have a weak association with development of co-morbidities while measures of abdominal obesity such as WHR, WC, and WHtR were found to have consistently strong association with CVA and CAD with high sensitivity and negative predictive values. Conclusion: More accurate markers of abdominal obesity can help in better assessment of cardiovascular risk among high-risk population to improve the overall outcome. Easy to use, outpatient-based markers such as WC, WHR, and WHtR appear to be better than BMI in risk assessment.

Background: Previously overweight and obesity are considered to be an issue of high-income countries but now increasingly becoming more prevalent in low-income and middle-income countries. Obesity and overweight are growing health issues in India. It is important to determine the quantum of the risk contribution by individual risk factor siuch as abdominal obesity. Aims: To find out the association of abdominal obesity and diabetes among the adult tribal population. Methods and Material: A cross-sectional study was conducted using multi-stage random sampling techniques. Using a pretested validated modified Stepwise questionnaire, a detailed interview with the participants aged above 30 years were performed. Random blood sugar and anthropometric parameters were estimated for all the participants. Chi-square test and multivariate regression analysis were used to study association. Results: Prevalence of abdominal obesity was 49.6% [211] among the study participants. Prevalence of diabetes was 7.8% [33] among the study population and 92.2% [392] of them were nondiabetic. Normal WHR was seen among 27.3% [9] of the diabetic individuals. High WHR was seen among 72.7% [24] of diabetic individuals. Gender, Illiterate, BMI, and waist-hip ratio shows significant association with diabetes. Conclusions: The prevalence of abdominal obesity was higher in the study population. As this burden among tribal people is on the increasing trend when compared with other general populations, effective strategies to prevent this have to be devised among the tribal population.

Abstract Background Preventing childhood obesity remains an important public health issue worldwide. Since visceral fat in particular is understood as an important risk factor for many chronic diseases, waist circumference is recommended as a measurement parameter for global obesity surveillance. This systematic review and meta-analysis focused on waist circumference as an outcome parameter for studies of school-based interventions to prevent overweight and obesity. Methods A systematic literature search was conducted at the end of 2019 in nine data bases, including Medline and Embase, in order to identify relevant studies evaluating interventions in schools aimed at preventing obesity. Eligibility criteria admitted randomised and non-randomised controlled trials. After screening titles, abstracts and full texts, the data of the identified studies were systematically extracted. Risk of bias was assessed according to study type with the appropriate Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool. The review gives a qualitative overview over all included studies structured by extracted data. Separate meta-analyses were done for the outcome mean difference in change in waist circumference, measured in cm or reported as z-score value, using an inverse variance random-effects model due to study design. Results A total of 2421 publications were screened based on titles, abstracts and full texts. Complemented by results of a former systematic literature search 44 studies were identified for inclusion, comprising a total of 39.837 participants (age range: 6 to 18 years). Nearly half of the studies were conducted in Europe, two-thirds combined diet and exercise-based interventions. Likewise two thirds of the studies were conducted as cluster-randomised trials. Most of the reported effects favoured the experimental groups, indicating the basic effectiveness of school-based measures. Based on reported data, only one third of the studies could be included in the meta-analyses. For the difference in mean change of the outcome parameter waist circumference measured in cm (95% CI), we found a pooled effect estimate of -0.95 (-1.87; -0.46). For the difference in mean change of the outcome parameter waist circumference reported as z-score value (95% CI), the pooled effect estimate was -0.10 (-0.15; -0.05). Objective: This study aims to examine the comparative effects of 75 min of volume-matched once-weekly and thrice-weekly high-intensity interval training (HIIT) on body adiposity in adults with central obesity. Methods: This assessor-blinded, three-arm, randomized controlled trial will recruit 315 physically inactive adults with central obesity (aged ≥18 years, body mass index ≥23, waist circumference ≥90 cm for men and ≥80 cm for women). Participants will be randomly allocated to the once-weekly HIIT, thrice-weekly HIIT or usual care control group. Participants in the HIIT groups will receive weekly exercise training sessions for 16 weeks, prescribed either once or three times weekly. Each HIIT session will consist of a supervised program of four 4-min high-intensity intervals at 85%–95% peak heart rate (HRpeak) interspersed with 3-min active recovery intervals at 50%–70% HRpeak. Participants in the once-weekly HIIT group will perform the 25-min HIIT bout three times with a break between each 25-min HIIT bout. The usual care control group will receive bi-weekly health education classes. The outcome assessments will be conducted at baseline, 16 weeks (post-intervention) and 32 weeks (follow-up). The primary outcome will be total body adiposity assessed by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA). The secondary outcome measures will include markers of cardiovascular and metabolic health (body composition, cardiorespiratory fitness, blood pressure, and blood lipids), mental health, cognitive performance, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, habitual physical activity, diet, medication, adverse events and adherence to the intervention. Impact of the project: The findings from this study are expected to consolidate the therapeutic efficacy of HIIT for the management of central obesity and inform the comparative compliance, feasibility and suitability of once-weekly and thrice-weekly HIIT as exercise strategies to manage obesity. In particular, the present study is expected to provide a novel perspective on the utility of low-frequency HIIT (i.e., once-weekly) as an effective and sustainable exercise strategy to tackle the obesity pandemic. The anticipated findings will hold substantial translational value by informing public health policies and enhancing exercise compliance in the physically inactive obese population. Abstract Obesity has become a global health problem. In recent years, the influence of dietary microbes in the obese population has attracted the attention of scholars. Our study aimed to investigate the link between live microbe intake and obesity in adults. Participants (aged over 20 years) for this study were from the 1999–2018 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Participants were categorised into low, medium and high dietary live microbe intake groups. Linear regression was used to analyse the link between live microbe intake and body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC). Logistic regression was used to analyse the link between live microbe intake and obesity and abdominal obesity prevalence. Restricted cubic spline curves (RCS) were used to check whether there was a non-linear relationship between live microbe intake and obesity. A total of 42,749 participants were included in this study and the number of obese reached 15,463. We found that live microbe intake was negatively linked to BMI and WC. In models adjusted for all confounders, the high live microbe intake group had lower obesity (OR = 0.812, 95%CI: 0.754–0.873) and abdominal obesity prevalence (OR = 0.851, 95%CI: 0.785–0.923) than the lowest intake group. Upon further quantification of live microbe intake, we found similar results. RCS analyses showed that live microbe intake was nonlinearly negatively correlated with BMI, WC, obesity, and abdominal obesity prevalence (P for non-linearity

BACKGROUND: Considering the role of visceral adipose tissue deposition in the pathogenesis of heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) and the positive effect of metformin on weight loss, the effect of this drug on adipose tissue compartments in patients with HFpEF is interest.AIM: To study the effect of extended-release metformin (XR) on various fat depots and parameters of insulin-glucose homeostasis in patients with HFpEF, prediabetes and abdominal obesity (AO).MATERIALS AND METHODS: Study design: single-center, open-ended, randomized, prospective, controlled. Objective To investigate the correlation between abdominal obesity and autoimmune thyroid disease in the view point of helper T cells and cytokines. Methods Clinical and laboratory data were collected from 108 patients with Hashimoto′s thyroiditis (HT) plus abdominal obesity and 122 patients of Hashimoto′s thyroiditis without abdominal obesity who visited the People′s Hospital of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region and also from the control population. Abdominal circumference was measured, and patients in the HT patients were grouped according to whether they were abdominally obese or not. The thyroglobulin antibody (TgAb) and thyroid peroxidase antibody (TPOAb) were detected, and the ratio of helper T cells and related cytokines were detected by flow cytometry and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Results The abdominal circumference of the TgAb-positive group was higher than that of the TgAb-negative group (P＜0.05). Correlation analysis suggested that abdominal circumference was significantly and positively correlated with TgAb and IL-4 but negatively correlated with Th1. After correcting for gender and age, and abdominal obesity and IL-4 were risk factors for TgAb antibody positivity OR=3.080(95% CI:1.022-9.284) and OR=1.296(95% CI:1.022-9.284), both with P＜0.05. Conclusions Abdominal obesity may be an influential factor in TgAb antibody positivity, with larger abdominal circumference having higher TgAb antibody titers, lower Th1 levels, and higher IL-4 levels. Abstract Background People with the metabolically obese normal weight (MONW) phenotype have been confirmed to significantly increase the risk of unfavorable health consequences. This study aimed to investigate the relationships between traditional and novel anthropometric indices with the MONW phenotype and compare the predictive ability of different anthropometric indices in identifying individuals with the MONW phenotype. Methods This cross-sectional study involved a total of 26,332 participants aged 18 years or older with a normal weight from Nanjing, China. Sociodemographic information, biochemical measurements, and anthropometric indices were collected. The novel body fat anthropometric indices included body shape index (ABSI), body roundness index (BRI), abdominal volume index (AVI), weight-adjusted-waist index (WWI), body adiposity index (BAI), conicity index (CI), waist-hip-height ratio (WHHR), as well as traditional indices such as waist circumference (WC), hip circumference (HC), body mass index (BMI), waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), and waist-to-height ratio (WHtR).The prevalence ratio (PR) from modified poisson regression and area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) were conducted to compare the association and predictive capacity of different obesity indicators for the MONW phenotype. Abstract Background The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) keeps increasing annually worldwide. Non-invasive assessment tools for evaluating the risk and severity of the disease are still limited. Insulin resistance (IR) and abdominal obesity (ABO) are closely related to NAFLD. Methods A retrospective large-scale, population-based study was conducted based on the data from the 2017–2018 cycle of the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Three ABO indices, namely lipid accumulation product (LAP), visceral obesity index (VAI), waist circumference-triglyceride index (WTI), and three IR indices, including triglyceride glucose index (TyG), homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) and metabolic score for insulin resistance (METS-IR), were analyzed and compared for their relationships with NAFLD based on weighted multivariable logistic regression, spearman correlation heatmap, smooth curve fittings. The area under the curve (AUC) of receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curve was used to evaluate the diagnostic capability of these indices for NAFLD. Differences among the AUCs were calculated and compared by Delong test. Results In total, 3095 participants were included in our study among which 1368 adults were diagnosed with NAFLD. All six indices presented positive associations with NAFLD. There was a claw-shaped curve between HOMA-IR, VAI, LAP and NAFLD while a smooth semi-bell curve was observed in TyG, METS-IR and WTI. LAP and HOMA-IR had the best diagnostic capability for NAFLD (LAP: AUC = 0.8, Youden index = 0.48; HOMA-IR: AUC = 0.798, Youden index = 0.472) while VAI (AUC = 0.728, Youden index = 0.361) showed the lowest predictive value. The correlation heat map indicated positive correlations between all six indices and liver function, hepatic steatosis and fibrosis severity. In the NAFLD group, IR indicators presented a stronger association with alanine aminotransferase (ALT) compared with ABO indices. Conclusions All six indices can screen NAFLD withLAP and HOMA-IR being possibly optimal predictors. IR indices may be more sensitive to identify acute hepatic injury in NAFLD patients than ABO indices.

Aim. To study the relationship and predictive value of integral metabolic indices of obesity in the identification of ectopic obesity.Material and methods. The study included 326 patients (146 men and 180 women, mean age 61±9 years). Anthropometric data, degree of obesity, body mass index (BMI), waist circumference (WC), sagittal abdominal diameter (SAD), body obesity index (BAI), visceral obesity index (VAI), lipid accumulation index (LAP), triglycerides-glucose index (TyG) was assessed. Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) volume, pericardial adipose tissue (PAT) volume and thickness of perirenal fat tissue (PRF) were assessed with CT.Results. Patients were divided into groups: with isolated ectopic obesity (iEO) (n=17); with isolated abdominal obesity (iAO) (n=74); with EO variants: pericardial (PCO) (n=31), perivascular (PVO) (n=22) or perirenal (PRO) (n=33) with AO; with mixed ectopic obesity and AO (mEO+AO) (n=117), and patients without obesity (n=32). Significantly higher BMI, WC, SAD, and BAI indices were found in individuals with PCO+AO, PRO+AO and mEO+AO. The highest values of LAP were found in groups: PCO+AO, PVO+AO, PRO+AO. There was a correlation between ectopic fat depots and WC (r=0,62 for PAT, r=0,55 for PVAT and r=0,39 for PRF, p=0,01) and SAD (0,429, 0,329 and 0,435, respectively, p=0,01). Correlation was established between PAT, PRF and LAP (0,425 and 0,319, respectively, p=0,01). The highest AUC values>0,8 had models of WC and SAD in identification of PCO (0,801 and 0,801, respectively) and PRO (0,826 and 0,826, respectively). For PCO, the cut-off point of WC was 100,5 cm (specificity 72,9%, sensitivity 70,2%, p=0,000), SAD — 25 cm (specificity 73%, sensitivity 70,2%, p=0,000). For PRO, the cut-off of WC was 101 cm (specificity 71,4%, sensitivity 72,7%, p=0,000), SAD — 25 cm (specificity 71,4%, sensitivity 72,7%, p=0,000).Conclusion. Еctopic fat depots are related to the risk of metabolic disorders. Potential informative value of simple and accessible integral metabolic indices was established. WC>100,5 cm, SAD>25 cm may indicate to the presence of PCO; WC>101 cm, SAD>25 cm — to the presence of PRO.

Abstract Background Recent studies on the association between Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and obesity have reported conflicting results. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to investigate the association of obesity, abdominal obesity, and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori infection. Methods A cross-sectional study of 1568 participants aged 20 to 85 was conducted using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) cycle 1999–2000. Logistic regression models were employed to evaluate the association of general obesity as defined by body mass index (BMI), abdominal obesity as defined by waist circumference (WC) and waist-height ratio (WHtR), and metabolic obesity phenotypes with H. pylori seropositivity. Abstract Purpose There is a major epidemic of obesity, and many obese patients suffer from respiratory symptoms and disease. However, limited research explores the associations between abdominal obesity and lung function indices, yielding mixed results. This study aims to analyze the association between waist circumference (WC), an easily measurable marker of abdominal obesity, and lung function parameters in middle-aged and older adults using the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods This study utilized data obtained from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) spanning 2007 to 2012, with a total sample size of 6089 individuals. A weighted multiple regression analysis was conducted to assess the relationship between WC and three pulmonary function parameters. Additionally, a weighted generalized additive model and smooth curve fitting were applied to capture any potential nonlinear relationship within this association. Results After considering all confounding variables, it was observed that for each unit increase in WC, in males, Forced Vital Capacity (FVC) increased by 23.687 ml, Forced Expiratory Volume in one second (FEV1) increased by 12.029 ml, and the FEV1/FVC ratio decreased by 0.140%. In females, an increase in waist circumference by one unit resulted in an FVC increase of 6.583 ml and an FEV1 increase of 4.453 ml. In the overall population, each unit increase in waist circumference led to a FVC increase of 12.014 ml, an FEV1 increase of 6.557 ml, and a decrease in the FEV1/FVC ratio by 0.076%. By constructing a smooth curve, we identified a positive correlation between waist circumference and FVC and FEV1. Conversely, there was a negative correlation between waist circumference and the FEV1/FVC ratio. Conclusions Our findings indicate that in the fully adjusted model, waist circumference, independent of BMI, positively correlates with FVC and FEV1 while exhibiting a negative correlation with FEV1/FVC among middle-aged and older adults in the United States. These results underscore the importance of considering abdominal obesity as a potential factor influencing lung function in American middle-aged and older adults.

Abstract Background To understand how body composition in those with elevated body mass index impacts left ventricular function decline during cancer treatment, we determined the association between baseline body mass index (BMI), intra-abdominal adipose tissue (IAT) and subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT) with baseline to 3-month left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) change among women receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy for breast cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoma. Methods Women underwent potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy, such as doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, paclitaxel, and trastuzumab, for treatment of breast cancer, lymphoma, or sarcoma. We obtained magnetic resonance images (MRIs) of body composition and cardiac function prior to treatment, and then a repeat MRI for cardiac function assessment at three months into treatment. Analyses and assessment of abdominal adipose tissue volumes and LVEF outcomes were conducted by independent reviewers blinded to all patient identifiers. A general linear model was created to examine associations between adipose tissue depots, BMI, and 3-month LVEF change. Results Women (n = 210) aged 56 ± 11 years with breast cancer, lymphoma, and sarcoma were enrolled (n = 195, 14, 1 respectively). Baseline BMI, IAT, and SAT fat were independently associated with 3-month LVEF declines (p = 0.001 to 0.025 for all). After adjusting for baseline cardiovascular disease risk factors, BMI, IAT, and SAT, BMI remained the only variable associated with 3-month LVEF decline (p = 0.047). Conclusions These results suggest that factors other than abdominal adipose tissue or traditional cardiovascular risk factors may contribute to 3-month declines in LVEF among women with elevated BMI receiving potentially cardiotoxic chemotherapy. Purpose: This study aimed to investigate the association between social jetlag (SJL) and obesity-related outcomes among adolescents from Valle de Ricote (Region of Murcia, Spain). We explored the relationship between SJL and body mass index (BMI) z-score, waist circumference, and body fat percentage, as well as the odds of having excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity in a sample of Spanish adolescents. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted using data from the Eating Healthy and Daily Life Activities (EHDLA) project, which included 847 Spanish adolescents aged 12–17 years. SJL was assessed based on the differences in sleep patterns between weekdays and weekends. Obesity-related indicators such as BMI z-score, waist circumference, body fat percentage, excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity were measured. Generalized linear models with a Gaussian or binomial distribution were used to analyze the associations between SJL and obesity-related outcomes, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: The analysis revealed significant associations between SJL and BMI z-score (unstandardized beta coefficient [B] = 0.15, 95% CI: 0.05 to 0.25, p = 0.003), waist circumference (B = 1.03, 95% CI: 0.39 to 1.67, p = 0.002), and body fat percentage (B = 0.83, 95% CI: 0.31 to 1.43, p = 0.008). Additionally, the odds ratios (ORs) for excess weight (OR = 1.35, 95% CI: 1.16 to 1.57; p < 0.001), obesity (OR = 1.59, 95% CI: 1.26 to 2.00; p < 0.001), and abdominal obesity (OR = 1.46, 95% CI: 1.23 to 1.72; p < 0.001) increased significantly with each 60 min increment in SJL. Conclusions: This study pointed out that the misalignment of sleeping times during weekdays and weekends (SJL) is significantly associated with higher BMI z-scores, waist circumference, body fat percentage, and higher odds of excess weight, obesity, and abdominal obesity among adolescents, being more significant in boys than in girls. These findings highlight the importance of addressing circadian misalignment in the prevention and management of obesity and its related metabolic disorders in this population. Objectives: The prevalence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) among patients with ischemic stroke is relatively high. The visceral fat area (VFA) is a predictor of MetS. This study aimed to estimate sex-specific optimal cut-off values of VFA and MetS risk factors among patients with ischemic stroke. Methods: A cross-sectional study including 851 patients with ischemic stroke was conducted between March 2019 and January 2020 in a tertiary hospital in the northeast of China. VFA was measured using the dual bioelectrical impedance method. Binary logistic regression analysis was used to investigate MetS risk factors, and the VFA cut-off value was assessed using receiver operating characteristic curve analysis. Results: The overall prevalence of MetS was 43.4%. After adjusting for potential confounders, female sex (odds ratio [OR] = 2.86, p < 0.001), the presence of visceral obesity according to VFA (OR = 7.45, p < 0.001), being overweight (OR = 2.75, p < 0.001) or obesity (OR = 6.00, p < 0.001) were associated with an increased risk of MetS. The correlation between VFA and MetS in patients with ischemic stroke was strongest with cut-off values of 104.3 cm2 (sensitivity 73.0%, specificity 83.1%) for men, and 94.1 cm2 (sensitivity 70.9%, specificity 72.9%) for women. Conclusion: MetS affected approximately a half of patients with ischemic stroke. Female sex, visceral obesity, and body mass index were independent risk factors for the development of MetS. Purpose of Review: The recent surge in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) cases has paralleled a significant rise in obesity and metabolic comorbidities rates. In this article, we explore the potential influence of obesity and associated metabolic comorbidities on disease progression, complications, treatment response, surgical outcomes, health economics, and the potential impact of obesity treatment on the course of IBD. Findings: Contrary to visceral adiposity, obesity does not consistently result in an increased risk of IBD-related complications. Patients with IBD have a higher risk of acute arterial events, likely linked to systemic inflammation. Substantial evidence suggests that obesity has a negative impact on the response to IBD treatment, with this effect being most thoroughly studied in biologics and immunomodulators. The rates of overall complications and post-operative infections are higher in patients who are obese. There are limited but promising data regarding the impact of weight loss techniques, including exercise, medications, and bariatric interventions, on the outcomes in IBD. Both obesity and diabetes have adverse effects on the overall quality of life and place an increased financial burden on the IBD population. Summary: A growing body of evidence indicates a connection between obesity and associated metabolic comorbidities and negative outcomes in IBD, yet further efforts are required to fully understand this relationship. Objective: In recent years, patients with celiac disease (CeD) have been reported to have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. We conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to assess the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in patients with CeD and effect of gluten-free diet in them. Methods: The PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library databases were searched for original studies upto November 18, 2022. We included full-text articles published in the English language after 1990 that used well-defined criteria for CeD, fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. A random effects model was used to calculate pooled prevalence. Results: Of 350 studies identified, 11 studies (n = 2578) were included in the analysis. On analysis of both cross-sectional and longitudinal studies, pooled prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome in treatment-naïve patients with CeD were 18.2% (95% CI 8.3–30.8%, n = 1237) and 4.3% (95% CI 2.4–6.7, n = 1239) and in those on GFD of varying duration was 28.2% (95% CI 20.7–36.4%, n = 1368) and 21.3% (95% CI 11.7–32.9%, n = 2193), respectively. There was no difference in the prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome between low- or high-income group countries. Conclusions: Patients with CeD have a high prevalence of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome which increases further with the initiation of GFD. Patients with CeD should thus be screened and monitored for development of fatty liver and metabolic syndrome. Aim: To study cross‐sectional relationships between step‐up height and waist circumference (WC), a potential proxy for sarcopenic obesity, in Swedish children and parents. Methods: Participants were recruited from Swedish schools in disadvantaged areas in 2017. Height, body weight, WC and maximal step‐up height were measured in 67 eight‐year‐old children and parents: 58 mothers, with a mean age of 38.5 and 32 fathers, with a mean age of 41.3. Sedentary time and physical activity were registered by an accelerometer. Associations between maximal step‐up height and WC were analysed using Pearson's correlation and adjusted linear regression. Results: Abdominal obesity, WC ≥ 66 centimetres (cm) in children, ≥88 cm in women and ≥102 cm in men, was observed in 13% and 35% of girls and boys, and in 53% and 34% among mothers and fathers, respectively. Negative associations between maximal step‐up height and WC were found for children (r = −0.37, p = 0.002) and adults (mothers r = −0.58, p < 0.001, fathers r = −0.48, p = 0.006). The associations remained after adjustments for height, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity in adults. Reduced muscle strength clustered within families (r = 0.54, p < 0.001). Background: Given the fundamental physiological differences between the sexes, this study aimed to investigate the effect of metabolic syndrome on ventilatory defects stratified by sex. Methods: We conducted a nationwide, pooled, cross-sectional study. Data from 45,788 participants (men, n = 15,859; women, n = 29,929) aged 30 years or more were obtained from the Taiwan Biobank. Age–sex-adjusted and multivariate logistic regression models were used to estimate the risk of developing impaired pulmonary function (restrictive or obstructive ventilatory defects) in individuals with or without metabolic syndromes. Separate models were also used to estimate the effect of metabolic syndrome scores and the effect of individual metabolic abnormalities on the risk of restrictive ventilatory defects. Results: The overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was estimated to be 15.9% in Taiwan, much higher in men than in women (18.6% versus 14.4%). A significant association was observed between metabolic syndromes and the risk of restrictive ventilatory defects. The risk of developing a restrictive ventilator defect was 35% higher in participants with metabolic syndromes (odds ratio, 1.35; 95% confidence interval, 1.26–1.45) than in those without metabolic syndromes. Elevated blood pressure and a triglycerides abnormality were important predictors of restrictive ventilator defects. Sex-stratified subgroup analyses of the individual metabolic abnormalities indicated that men with abdominal obesity and women with dysglycemia were more likely to develop restrictive ventilatory defects. Conclusions: Our study's evidence suggested that metabolic syndromes were important predictors of impaired pulmonary function and an increased risk of developing restrictive ventilatory defects, and its risk increased with increasing numbers of metabolic abnormalities.
