Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate the freeze-thawing method in reducing viral load of cytomegalovirus (CMV) in breast milk of mothers of preterm infants., Materials and Methods: In this study, 169 nursing mothers of preterm infants were evaluated serologically for CMV infection. We found 29 (17.15%) nursing mothers who had serologic evidence of CMV infections consistent with recent infection (N = 2, IgG + IgM +) or prior infection (N = 27 IgG + IgM-). Two to 6 weeks after delivery, breast milk of seropositive mothers (N = 29) was evaluated for CMV load by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR) before and after freezing at -20°C for 72 hours. All preterm infants with milk results positive for DNA particles of CMV (N = 25) were followed up for signs and symptoms of CMV infection until 3 months of age, together with urine testing for CMV by real-time PCR., Results: Examination of breast milk by real-time PCR of the seropositive mothers showed 25 of them with CMV DNA particles in their breast milk. After freezing and thawing, we found virus DNA in 4 of 25 (16%) of the breast milk samples and there was no CMV DNA particles in 21 (84%) of them. In these samples, mean viral load before freezing was 76.04 ± 34.08 copies/μL (20-135.00 copies/μL) and after freezing it was 6.75 ± 4.34 copies/μL (0.00-13.00 copies/μL). Freezing showed a significant decrease in viral load of the samples (p = 0.001)., Conclusion: The study showed that the freeze-thawing method is an effective method in reducing the CMV load in breast milk samples.

Background: Hydatid disease is one of the major world-wide health problems especially in endemic countries. Due to lack of statistics about this disease, various aspects of hydatidosis in children in North-West of Iran have been studied in this study., Materials and Methods: We studied 59 children with hydatidosis referring Tabriz Children Hospital, Tabriz, Iran from 2001 up to 2011. We surveyed chief complaint of patients, number, size and location of cysts in children and also we studied cysts as if they are infected or ruptured or not., Results: Average age of 59 patients (32 [54.2%] males and 27 [45.8%] females) was 7.93 ± 3.0. The most common chief complaints were cough and pain. Number of cysts was higher in females (2.00 ± 2.8 vs. 1.52 ± 1.0). The most common locations of cysts are lung and liver (52 patients); however, other organs had been also affected., Conclusions: Lung hydatidosis is more common than hepatic hydatidosis in children than adults and it is more frequent in males. Hydatid disease should be considered in differential diagnoses of liver and lung cystic lesions in children.

Meningitis is one of the hazardous and life threatening infections and is associated with mortality and morbidity. The aim of this study was to determine etiological agents of childhood bacterial meningitis. The culture, Gram staining, agglutination and PCR assays were used to examine CSF specimens from 277 patients with presumed bacterial meningitis for the occurrence of 4 most common infectious agents consist of N. meningitis, H. influnsae, S. pneumoniae and S. agalactiae between 2008 and 2009 at different wards of the Children Hospital of Tabriz. The mean age of patients was 35 ± 2 (Mean ± SEM) month, (minimum 11 days maximum 14 years), of all cases 59.6% male and 40.4% female. Overall the diagnosis was confirmed with a CSF culture in 11/277 (3.97%), by agglutination test in 14/277 (5.05%). The isolated bacteria included S. pneumoniae 5 cases, H. influnsae 2 cases, N. meningitis 3 cases and P. aeroginusae 1 case. A positive PCR assay allowed us to diagnose bacterial meningitis in 19 patients (6.8%). In the present study, we found PCR to be a useful and sensitive method for the detection of bacterial DNA in the CSF samples from suspected meningitis patients. Furthermore, to maximize management of meningitis cases, a combination of culture and PCR is necessary.
