This study aimed to examine the psychometric properties of the Arabic version of a short version of the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory of Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ-S) among a sample of 700 patients with anxiety disorders (53.1% were female). Participants completed the RST-PQ-S, NEO-FFI, Positive Mental Health (PMH), and Kessler Psychological Distress scale. Both Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) and Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) were employed to test the construct validity of the scale. This study also utilized a network perspective, incorporating Exploratory Graph Analysis (EGA) and centrality measures. As a result of the EFA and CFA, it was determined that the scale consists of 22 items and six subdimensions. These subdimensions were named as follows: "Flight Fight-Freeze System", "Behavioral Inhibition System", "Reward Interest", "Reward Reactivity", "Goal-Drive Persistence", and "Impulsivity". Additionally, the network analysis's findings confirmed the six-factor structure derived from the construct validity assessment. The results of this study demonstrated that the Arabic version of the personality scale is a valid and reliable tool for assessing personality in Arabic-speaking individuals with anxiety disorders. It has the potential to serve as an important diagnostic instrument in clinical and research settings. Introduction: The current study aimed to evaluate the relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV) and suicidal ideation among women using a network analysis approach., Method: Secondary data including 440 women (mean age ± SD = 32.78 ± 8.09) who experienced IPV in the last 6 months were used. The Revised Composite Abuse Scale-Short Form, Columbia-Suicide Severity Rating Scale and Revised Scale of Economic Abuse were used to assess IPV and suicidal ideation. Network analysis, centrality measures and bridge centrality were applied to understand the interplay between IPV and suicide risk factors., Results: The strongest association in the network analysis was found between 'Wish to be Dead' (S.1) and 'Non-Specific Active Suicidal Thoughts' (S.2) with a weight of 0.523, indicating a substantial correlation between general suicidal thoughts and particular desires to die. IPV symptoms, particularly economic exploitation and psychological abuse, showed strong links to suicidal ideation. 'Active Suicidal Ideation with Specific Plan and Intent' (S.5) was significantly related to 'Make you take out a loan or buy something on credit when you didn't want to' (EA.11) with a weight of 0.276. Additionally, centrality analysis showed that 'Wish to be Dead' (S.1) was the most central node in the network of suicidal ideation, with the highest centrality score (betweenness = 2.625)., Conclusion: These findings suggest that IPV, mainly psychological abuse, plays a pivotal role in suicidal ideation among women. Mental health interventions should focus on addressing IPV-related psychological abuse. Research has developed the Big-Five Aspect Scale (BFAS), supporting a five-domain model that includes 10 related aspects. In Arabic societies, there is currently a lack of validation evidence for a scale with these 10 aspects. Thus, this study develops and examines the psychometric properties of the short version of the BFAS (BFAS-SV) within Libyan Arab adults. The sample (N = 1136; 74.6% women, Mage = 25.30, SDage = 8.44) completed the original BFAS and the Arabic version of the International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) to assess the BFAS-SV's convergent validity. Confirmatory Factor Analysis (CFA) was applied. The findings provide strong support for the presence of 10 distinct aspects within the Big Five personality domains. Additionally, a robust positive and negative correlation was found among the 10 BFAS-SV aspects, as well as between the BFAS-SV domains of Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Introversion, and Openness/Intellect and their corresponding dimensions in the IPIP, further confirming its concurrent and discriminant validity. Furthermore, the Cronbach's alpha coefficients for the five domains and their respective 10 aspects ranged from 0.61 to 0.85, indicating good internal consistency. Significant gender differences were observed in the Neuroticism domain, particularly in its two aspects (Volatility and Withdrawal), as well as in the Openness/Intellect domain and the Politeness aspect, with women scoring higher in all cases.In conclusion, this study establishes the reliability, validity, and applicability of the Arabic BFAS among the Libyan Arab population. The aim of the study was to investigate the mediating roles of resilience, posttraumatic growth (PTG) and religiosity between the impact of hurricane trauma and psychological distress. Using a cross-sectional design, the study involved 101 Libyan participants with an average age of 30.43 years (SD = 9.59), of whom 72% were women. Participants completed validated tests, including the Impact of Event Scale (IES), Brief Resilience Scale, Muslim Religiosity Scale and Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ). The results indicated that posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) were not associated with PTG (r = 0.04, p > 0.05) or religiosity (r = 0.02, p > 0.05) but were negatively associated with resilience (r = -0.39, p < 0.001) and positively associated with psychological distress including anxiety (r = 0.72, p < 0.001) and depression (r = 0.69, p < 0.001). Structural equation modelling (SEM) revealed that only resilience positively mediated the association between PTSS and anxiety (indirect effect = 0.04, p = 0.031), while PTSS positively predicted psychological distress (β = 0.037, p < 0.001). Network analysis identified parent loss is strongly connected with intrusion (r = 0.121), as most central node, while partner loss was associated with hyperarousal (r = 0.063), irritability (r = 0.036) and both share the same connection with numbing, while interestingly partner and friends loss share connection with resilience (r = 0.177). The study concludes that urgent clinical interventions, such as trauma-focused cognitive behavioural therapy, are required for the affected individuals, with a focus on enhancing resilience as a protective factor against PTSS., (© 2024 The Author(s). The current paper aimed to investigate the network structure and centrality indexes of hypersensitive narcissism using the hypersensitive Narcissism Scale (HSN). Additionally, we aimed to explore its relationships with dark triad personality aspects. A globally diverse sample of "53,981" participants (47.9% non-United States responders) completed the HSN and Dark Triad Dirty Dozen scale (DTD). We estimated the network structure across genders to determine the core characteristics of hypersensitive narcissism. Additionally, bridge and central nodes (characteristics) were identified. All analyses were performed using R-Studio programming software. The network comparison test indicated significant differences in the network structures between males and females (Network-Invariance: 0.0489, P < 0.01; Global Strength Invariance: 0.101, P < 0.01). In the network of HSN for male participants, characteristics with the highest strength centrality were "Highly affected by criticism" (HSN.2, strength = 1.08) and "Self-absorbed in personal pursuits" (HSN.8, strength = 1.28). For female participants, "Self-absorbed in personal pursuits" (HSN.8, strength = 1.32) and "privately annoyed by others' needs" (HSN.10, strength = 1.21) were the highest central characteristics. The assessment of bridge strength indicated that nodes HSN.2 (Highly sensitive to criticism), scoring 0.42, and DTD.1 (Tendency to manipulate for gain, a component of Machiavellianism), scoring 0.428, showed the highest bridge strength values. The current study identified core characteristics of hypersensitive narcissism and its correlation with dark triad personality, revealing gender-specific patterns and bridging symptoms between the two constructs. Background: The Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory of Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ) originated from the Revised Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory of Personality. This study was conducted to assess the psychometric properties of the Persian version of the RST-PQ among a group of Iranian adults., Method: The cross-sectional study was carried out among 600 Iranian adults utilizing a convenient sampling method, following specific participant selection criteria to enhance the study methodology's transparency (including the age range between 18 and 35 years' participants without major psychiatric diagnoses). Participants completed both the Iranian version of the Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory Personality Questionnaire (RST-PQ) and the Five-Factor NEO-FFI questionnaire. Confirmatory factor analysis, employing the multiple indicators model (MIMIC) approach, was utilized in this study to control for demographic variables such as age and gender., Results: The confirmatory factor analysis results showed an acceptable fit of the proposed six-factor model based on the English version of RST-PQ (CFI = 0.905; RMSEA = 0.053). Also, Cronbach's alpha values confirmed the internal consistency of the proposed structure. In addition, competing models were also used to select the best-proposed model. In this way, different models were evaluated, assuming a change in the correlation intensity between BIS and the Fight-Flight-Freeze System (FFFS)., Conclusions: The convergent validity results with the Five-Factor Personality measure provided further support and were consistent with previous research findings. Background: The aim of this study was to evaluate hyperemesis gravidarum in pregnant women and its psychological impact., Methods: This retrospective study included 109 pregnant females suffering from hyperemesis gravidarum admitted during 2019-2020 at Maternity Ain shams university hospital., Results: Disease severity and laboratory investigations such as Na and K levels ( P  = 0.007 and < 0.001, respectively) and serum creatinine level ( P  < 0.001) were significantly positively correlated. Gestational trophoblastic disease is not an uncommonly encountered pathology in clinical practice. The rate of post-molar neoplastic transformation is around 5-20% with higher rates after complete versus partial molar pregnancies. Recently, a role for molecular and genetic markers in the prediction of neoplastic transformation has emerged. We read with interest the article by St. Laurent et al. published in this issue of Reproductive Sciences. The authors compared miRNA profiles between complete hydatidiform moles (CHMs) and pre-gestational trophoblastic neoplasia CHM samples at three distinct tropho-miRNA clusters, 14q32, C19MC, and miR-371-3, as well as the expression of the contiguous DLK1, DIO3, and RTL1 genes. They found significant differences in expression of the 14q32 miRNA cluster and a fivefold decrease in protein expression of DIO3 but no difference in DIO3 mRNA expression. We reviewed the literature for similar studies looking at predictive tools for neoplastic transformation. We encourage future randomized controlled trials using these 2 novel risk predictors postulated by St. Laurent et al. to validate and guide future prophylactic chemotherapy for prevention of post-molar GTN., (© 2021. Kuwait is a small Arabian Gulf country with a high rate of consanguinity and where a national newborn screening program was expanded in October 2014 to include a wide range of endocrine and metabolic disorders. A retrospective study conducted between January 2015 and December 2020 revealed a total of 304,086 newborns have been screened in Kuwait. Six newborns were diagnosed with classic homocystinuria with an incidence of 1:50,000, which is not as high as in Qatar but higher than the global incidence. Molecular testing for five of them has revealed three previously reported pathogenic variants in the CBS gene, c.969G>A, p.(Trp323Ter); c.982G>A, p.(Asp328Asn); and the Qatari founder variant c.1006C>T, p.(Arg336Cys). This is the first study to review the screening of newborns in Kuwait for classic homocystinuria, starting with the detection of elevated blood methionine and providing a follow-up strategy for positive results, including plasma total homocysteine and amino acid analyses. Further, we have demonstrated an increase in the specificity of the current newborn screening test for classic homocystinuria by including the methionine to phenylalanine ratio along with the elevated methionine blood levels in first-tier testing. Here, we provide evidence that the newborn screening in Kuwait has led to the early detection of classic homocystinuria cases and enabled the affected individuals to lead active and productive lives.

Background/objectives: The aim of this article was to study the lower punctum parameters in patients with acquired punctal stenosis using spectral-domain anterior segment optical coherence tomography., Subjects/methods: This was a prospective nonrandomized study that included two groups. Group 1 was composed of 32 puncta from 32 subjects (11 males and 21 females, aged 40-62 years) with epiphora and clinically diagnosed punctal stenosis. Group 2 (control group) included 30 puncta from 30 normal subjects (10 males and 20 females, aged 43-63 years). Anterior segment optical coherence tomography was employed to evaluate lower punctum parameters in all subjects; the inner and outer punctal diameters as well as punctal depth were measured., Results: External punctal diameter (mean: 466.1 ± 120.3 μm), internal punctal diameter (mean: 173.4 ± 55.6 μm) and punctal depth (mean: 188.4 ± 67 μm) values in Group 1 were statistically significantly lower than those in Group 2 (mean: 745.7 ± 156.9 μm, mean: 384 ± 119.1 μm, and mean: 284.9 ± 57.7 μm, respectively)., Conclusion: Anterior segment optical coherence tomography could possibly be used as a noncontact and noninvasive diagnostic modality for evaluating and measuring the lower punctum in patients with punctal stenosis. Further research is required to develop a normative database and grading system for stenosed puncta and to correlate the degree of stenosis with the severity of epiphora.

Metacognition is the ability of learners to take necessary steps to plan suitable strategies for solving the problems they face, to evaluate consequences and outcomes and to modify the approach as needed, based on the use of their prior knowledge. Metacognition helps learners to successfully achieve a personal goal by choosing the right cognitive tool for this purpose. The study, therefore, aims to explain the relationship and impact of metacognitive awareness and academic motivation on student's academic achievement. This descriptive and correlational study design has included 200 students (60 males) studying sociology in the College of Mass Communication and Humanities at Ajman University, UAE. Academic intrinsic motivations scale and the metacognitive awareness inventory were used as instruments. PLS-SEM was used to examine the relationship between metacognitive awareness and academic motivation, and their impact on academic achievement. Females obtained significantly higher levels than males on the two scales of metacognitive awareness, as shown in metacognitive knowledge. Females reported a higher-level academic extrinsic motivation than males. There is a highly significant correlation between the students' academic achievement and academic motivation; academic achievement and academic intrinsic motivation; academic achievement and academic extrinsic motivation. Fabrication of nanocomposite biofilms with enhanced mechanical and antibacterial properties was successfully achieved from hyaluronan (HA) and partially deacetylated chitin nanowhiskers (ChNWs) by a casting-evaporation method. The hydrolysis process of chitin showed an important role in the dimensions, stability, and the crystallinity of extracted ChNWs in a time-dependent manner. The volume fraction of ChNWs nanofiller varying from (0.001 to 0.5) exhibited a great influence on the mechanical properties of the biofilms (young modulus, strength) was enhanced by the high load-bearing capacity of NWs compared with net HA film. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposite biofilms exhibited significant bactericidal activity against different types of bacteria (-/+ gram). HA/ChNWs Nanocomposite biofilms did not show any toxicity against normal human dermal fibroblasts (NHDF) and human primary osteogenic sarcoma (Saos-2) cell lines. The new biofilms with unique properties like edibleness, environmental friendliness, high mechanical properties, antibacterial performance, and non-cytotoxicity that could be used in skin tissue regenerations, and drug delivery applications., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier Ltd. Introduction: The levonorgestrel intrauterine system (LNG-IUS) is a long-acting hormone-releasing uterine device that has many non-contraceptive benefits. The study aims to assess the safety and efficacy of LNG-IUS in the management of adenomyosis., Material and Methods: We searched the following bibliographic databases: MEDLINE via PubMed, SCOPUS, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), EMBASE and Google Scholar for the relevant studies which used LNG-IUS in management of patients with clinically or ultrasonographic diagnosed adenomyosis.The main outcome measures are pain score at the end of follow-up, bleeding, symptomatic relief, uterine volume (mL), endometrial thickness (mm) and/or hemoglobin level., Results: Ten prospective studies (patients n = 551) were included. The overall effect estimates showed that the LNG-IUS led to significant reductions in pain score after 12 months (standardized mean difference [SMD[ -3.87, 95% confidence interval [CI] -5.51 to -2.23, P < .001), 24 months (SMD -5.56, 95% CI -9.80 to -1.32, P = .01) and 36 months of insertion (SMD -3.81, 95% CI -4.27 to -3.36, P < .001). Similarly, the Pictorial Blood Assessment Chart (PBAC) showed significant reduction up to 36 months after LNG-IUS insertion (SMD -2.32, 95% CI -2.91 to -1.73, P < .001). The LNG-IUS led to significant reductions in the uterine volume 12 months (SMD -.60, 95% CI -0.88 to -.31, P < .001) and 36 months after insertion (SMD -0.42, 95% CI -0.69 to -0.14, P = .003)., Conclusions: LNG-IUS is a promising and effective option for the management of adenomyosis. Objective: To assess the diagnostic accuracy of maternal serum pentraxin 3 (PTX3) in identifying pathological intrauterine fetal growth restriction (IUFGR) among women presented in the third trimester of pregnancy with a small for gestational age (SGA) fetus., Study Design: This case control study was conducted in Ain-Shams University Maternity Hospital, Abbasiya Square, Cairo, Egypt and included women diagnosed at the third trimester of pregnancy as having a SGA fetus. Cases included pregnant women with pathological IUFGR, while women with physiologically SGA fetus were included in the control group. Diagnosis of antenatal SGA fetus was based on the presence of abdominal circumference <10th percentile. Pathological IUFGR was provisionally diagnosed antenatally by the presence of falling percentiles on serial ultrasound scans and then the definitive diagnosis was established postnatally after comprehensive neonatal evaluation. Maternal venous blood samples were collected from the eligible participants, once at the time of enrollment, to assess serum PTX3 levels using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Both groups were then followed up till delivery to confirm the diagnosis., Results: Among the 68 pregnant included in the study, PTX3 was found to be significantly elevated in women with SGA fetus due to pathological IUFGR (n=34) than those with physiologically SGA fetus (n=34) [6.5 ng/ml (2.5-11.0) versus 1.2 ng/ml (0.8-2.5) respectively], with a best cutoff value of ≥1.3 ng/ml [sensitivity of 85.3% (95% confidence interval (CI), 68.9-95.0) and a specificity of 73.5% (95% CI, 55.6-87.1)]. Using multivariable binary logistic regression model, amniotic fluid index (AFI) (P=0.010), estimated fetal weight (EFW) (P=0.016), PTX3 level (P=0.041), and umbilical artery pulsatility index (UA-PI) (P=0.027) were all found to be independent diagnostic markers for pathological IUFGR., Conclusion: PTX3 is a promising marker that deserves further evaluation as it may differentiate normal and abnormal fetal growth among women presenting at third trimester of pregnancy with a SGA fetus., (Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Ireland Ltd. Purpose: To evaluate the use of gold weight implantation in the upper eyelid in the treatment of upper eyelid retraction caused by thyroid ophthalmopathy as regards the cosmetic and functional results and the safety of the procedure., Patients and Method: This is a surgical intervention case series study. The study was carried out in Ophthalmology Department in El-Minya University Hospital between January 2013 and January 2014. The study was approved by the ethical committee board of El-Minya University. Test weights were applied to the skin of the upper eyelid using special adhesive tape in the sitting position to determine the suitable implantable weight. Three interrupted nonabsorbable sutures (5/0 Dacron) were used to secure the gold weight to the tarsus. The orbicularis was closed using interrupted 6/0 vicryl sutures. The skin was closed using interrupted 6/0 nylon sutures., Results: As regards the postoperative results, by the end of the follow-up period, improvement of eyelid retraction was present in all cases. Normal upper eyelid margin position (covering 2 mm of the cornea) was attained in 10 eyelids (76.92%). Undercorrection was observed in 3 eyelids (23.07%). Two eyelids covered 1 mm of the cornea, and 1 eyelid rested at the upper limbus. All patients (100%) were satisfied as regards the cosmetic results, with the degree of satisfaction ranging between very good for 3 patients and excellent for 4 patients. One patient had bilateral brick-shaped appearance., Conclusions: Gold weight implantation for treatment of thyroid-related upper eyelid retraction markedly improves the cosmetic appearance of the patient and, to a lesser extent, improves the manifestations of exposure with high patient satisfaction, and it is a relatively easy and safe procedure.
