Abstract

This paper deals with a model of chemostat with two cross‐feeding species and involving two inhibitions. The excess of hydrogen inhibits the growth of acetogenic bacteria which, in turn, inhibit the growth of methanogenic hydrogenotrophic bacteria. The model is described by a system of four ordinary differential equations. We established the conditions of existence and stability of equilibria with respect to the operating parameters which are the dilution rate and the input substrate concentrations of the species of the model, then we illustrate the operating and bifurcation diagrams. This technique makes it easy to interpret different regions of operating diagrams. Inhibitions let some regions of stability rise and others vanish. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the ANUMAB project-"Approches numériques et mathématiques appliquées pour la bioéconomie et la REUSE". This project, under the patronage of the UNESCO International Water Center ICIREWARD in Montpellier aims at i) proposing the creation of a UNESCO chair on the valorization of wastewater, waste and nutrients at ENIT-LAMSIN, Tunisia, ii) creating a new research theme within the SIMEV UNESCO chair in Montpellier and iii) beginning research activities through the reinforcement of collaborations by relying on the network of collaborations federated within the Euro-Mediterranean research network TREASURE-"Treatment and sustainable reuse of wastewater in the Mediterranean rim". The main originality of the project lies in the fact that it advocates the adoption of an integrated multidisciplinary approach to meet the challenges of the circular economy.

Abstract

The Anaerobic Digestion (AD) is a natural process of biogas production from organicwastes. This gas can be used as a source of energy, hence the growing interest in processes allowing the optimization of biogas production. This work deals with the mathematical analysis of acontinuous process model of AD in a cascade of two different bioreactors. The aim is to stimulate theactivity of biomass, in order to produce a maximum rate of methane and hydrogen. The reactions aredescribed by two systems with an equal number of equations in both bioreactors. We determine theequilibrium points of these systems and we give necessary and sufficient conditions for their existenceand stability. Our results are illustrated by numerical simulations and operatory diagrams for a wellunderstanding of the process., La digestion anaérobie est un processus naturel de production de biogaz à partir de déchets organiques, en absence d'oxygène. Ce gaz peut être utilisé comme source d'énergie, d'où l'intérêt croissant aux procédés permettant l'optimisation de la production du biogaz. Ce travail présente un modèle mathématique correspondant à un processus de production de biogaz en deux phases, stimulant l'activité de la biomasse pour produire le maximum de méthane et d'hydrogène. Les deux phases du processus se déroulent dans deux bioréacteurs différents et sont décrites par deux systèmes avec un nombre égal d'équations. Nous nous proposons de faire l'analyse mathéma-tique de ces systèmes. Pour cela, nous déterminons les points d'équilibre et donnons les conditions de leur existence et de leur stabilité locale. Les résultats obtenus sont illustrés par des simulations et des diagrammes opératoires permettant de bien comprendre le processus.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we generalise a reduced anaerobic digestion model describing the anaerobic mineralisation of chlorophenol in a three-tiered food-web. The aim of the study is to take into account, the phenol and the hydrogen inflowing concentrations S ph,in and S H2,in , in addition of the chlorophenol input substrate. This case present interesting behaviours. We prove that the system can have eight types of steady-states, instead of only three types of steady-states as in the case S ph,in = S H2,in = 0. We give conditions for the existence and stability of the steady-states of the system without mortality terms. By means of operating diagrams, we illustrate the asymptotic behavior of the model.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, we study a model describing a syntrophic relationship of two microbial species with two input substrates, including both decay terms and inhibition of the first species by an excess of the second substrate. This model can be seen as a reduced and simplified version of the anaerobic digestion process. We discuss the existence and stability of all equilibria and we give necessary and sufficient conditions on the control parameters of the system (the dilution rate D and the input concentrations of the two substrates s in 0 and s in 1). By means of operating diagrams, we describe the asymptotic behavior of the model with respect to the control parameters and we illustrate the effect of the second input substrate.

Abstract

The aim of this work is the numerical study of Richards equation, which models the water flow in a partially saturated underground porous medium under the surface. We propose a discretization of this equation that combines Euler's implicit scheme in time and spectral methods in space. We prove optimal error estimates between the continuous and discrete solutions. Some numerical experiments confirm the interest of this approach. We present numerical experiments which are in perfect coherence with the analysis.

Abstract

We study a model of the chemostat with several species in competition on a single resource. We take into account the intra-specific interactions between individuals of the same population of microorganisms and we assume that the growth rates are increasing and the dilution rates are distinct. Using the concept of steady-state characteristic, we present a geometric characterization of the existence and stability of all equilibria. Moreover, we give the necessary and sufficient condition on the parameters such that the system has a positive equilibrium. Using a Lyapunov function, we give a global asymptotic stability result for the competition model of several species. The operating diagram describes the asymptotic behavior of this model with respect to control parameters and illustrates the effect of the intra-specific competition on the region of coexistence of several species.

Abstract

International audience; Anaerobic digestion is a biological process in which organic matter is transformed into methane and carbon dioxide (biogas) by microorganisms in the absence of oxygen. The search for models simple enough to be used for control design is of prior importance today to optimize fermentation processes and solve important problems such as the development of renewable energy from waste. Within the studies of microbiology, biochemistry and technology, the anaerobic digestion is generally considered as a three step process: hydrolysis and liquefaction of the large, insoluble organic molecules by extracellular enzymes, acid production by an acidogenic microbial consortium and a methane production stage realized by a methanogenic ecosystem. We propose a mathematical models describing these phenomena.

Abstract

In this work, we focus on the mathematical analysis of the model of chemostat with enzymatic degradation of a substrate (organic matter) that can partly be under a solid form [4]. The study of this 3-step model is derived from a smaller order sub-model since some variables can be decoupled from the others. We study the existence and the stability of equilibrium points of the sub-model considering monotonic growth rates and distinct dilution rates. In the classical chemostat model with monotonic kinetics, it is well known that only one equilibrium point attracts all solutions and that bistability never occurs [5]. In the present study, although (i) only monotonic growth rates are considered and (ii) the concentrations of input substrate concentration is less than the break-even concentration, it is shown that the considered sub-model may exhibit bistability., Dans ce travail, on s’intéresse à l’analyse mathématique d’un modèle du chémostat avec dégradation enzymatique du substrat (matière organique) qui peut être sous forme solide [4]. L’étude du modèle à trois étages est déduite du sous-modèle puisque certaines variables peuvent être découplées des autres. On étudie l’existence et la stabilité des points d’équilibre du sous-modèle pour des taux de croissance monotones et des taux de dilution distincts. Il est bien connu que le modèle classique du chémostat, avec des taux de croissance monotones, n’admet qu’un seul point d’équilibre globalement attractif. La bistabilité, c’est à dire l’existence de deux équilibres localement stables, ne peut pas se produire [5]. Cette bistabilité peut avoir lieu cependant pour une fonction de croissance non monotone, par exemple du type Haldane. Dans notre nouveau modèle on montre que, même si les taux de croissance sont monotones, alors le système peut présenter deux équilibres localement stables.

Abstract

Dans ce travail, on considère un modèle du chémostat avec dégradation enzymatique du substrat sous forme solide. On étudie l'existence et la stabilité des points d'équilibre. Selon la concentration du substrat à l'entrée du chémostat, on démontre l'existence d'au plus deux points d'équilibre positifs.
