Abstract Water pollution is a pressing global concern, with per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) being considered as “forever contaminants.” Among them, perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) has received significant attention for its adverse effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems. This study aimed to design an innovative adsorbent for effective PFOS removal with exceptional water stability, improving its cost-performance trade-off. The current work simultaneously improved the stability of water of Cu-based metal–organic framework (CMOF) and increased its PFOS removal capacity by modifying it with amine-functionalized SiO2 nanoparticles (AF-CMOF). AF-CMOF presented a lower specific surface area of 999 m2 g−1 compared to CMOF with a surface area of 1098 m2 g−1. AF-CMOF showed remarkable PFOS uptake performance of 670 mg/g compared to the performance of the Cu-based MOF which exhibited a PFOS uptake capacity of only 22 mg/g. The most suitable pH for PFOS removal using both adsorbents was determined to be 3. In addition, AF-CMOF demonstrated excellent water stability, retaining its structural integrity even after seven days of water contact, while CMOF structure collapsed rapidly after four days of water exposure. Moreover, the study identified the significant pH influence on the PFOS uptake process, with electrostatic interactions between protonated amine functionalities and PFOS molecules identified as the dominant mechanism. The study’s findings present the potential of synthesized adsorbent as a superior candidate for PFOS uptake and contribute to the development of effective water treatment technologies.

Abstract This study delves into the realm of water treatment by conducting a comprehensive techno-economic evaluation of direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD) and nanofiltration (NF) processes. While previous research has explored the technical aspects of membrane distillation (MD) and nanofiltration, there remains a notable gap in economic analyses. Our research aims to bridge this gap by assessing the financial feasibility of employing MD and NF technologies for water desalination. Specifically, we scrutinize the performance of hydrophobic microporous flat sheet membranes crafted from polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) supported by non-woven polypropylene (PP) in desalinating brackish water through DCMD and NF processes. By varying operating conditions such as flow rate and feed temperature, we evaluate the membrane's efficacy. Employing an analytical model based on heat and mass transfer equations, we predict process performance across diverse scenarios. Our model demonstrates a high level of accuracy, with flux predictions deviating by less than 10% when utilizing the Knudsen-molecular mechanism model. Furthermore, through a detailed design and economic analysis of industrial-scale units for both processes, we reveal that the cost of permeated water is lower with NF compared to DCMD. Specifically, our calculations indicate a water cost of 1.34 USD/m3 for DCMD at a feed temperature of 65 °C with an 80% recovery rate, positioning it as a competitive option among conventional desalination methods. Notably, our financial assessment highlights that steam cost constitutes the primary expense in DCMD operations, contingent upon heating value and fuel prices. Noteworthy findings suggest that natural gas emerges as the most cost-effective fuel for steam production in a DCMD plant. This study underscores the economic viability and potential cost efficiencies associated with NF over DCMD in water treatment applications.

In this study, a new synthesized magnetic nanocomposite was used as an adsorbent for the removal of toxic cationic dye methylene blue (MB). The adsorbent incorporated three components to produce a nanocomposite named Fe 3 O 4 /GO/natural clay. The characterization techniques were used to study the physical and chemical properties of nanocomposite and approve the successful synthesis. XRD of the Fe 3 O 4 /GO/natural clay nanocomposite indicated the crystalline structure with the appearance of characteristic peaks of each component. Also, the FT-IR of Fe 3 O 4 /GO/clay nanocomposite showed a significant change in the peak intensity of natural clay after the addition of GO and magnetic NPs which attributed to the successful interaction between GO and magnetic NPs with the functional groups on the surface of clay. The TEM and SEM images of the nanocomposite showed that the magnetic NPs, clay, and GO excellently interacted in one appropriate structure with the deposition of clay and magnetic NPs on the GO surface which serves as a matrix holding them. The MB adsorption system was optimized by varying several parameters, including pH, adsorbent dosage, contact time, starting concentration, ionic strength, and competing ions. Furthermore, the adsorption isotherm showed that the highest adsorption capacities of 999.34 and 1108.54 mg/g for the Fe 3 O 4 /GO/natural clay and Fe 3 O 4 /natural clay nanocomposites, respectively, followed the Langmuir isotherm. Additionally, the kinetic analysis showed that a pseudo-second-order model better explained the adsorption on both nanocomposites. The nanocomposite can be reused for multiple cycles with a little drop in its initial performance, according to reusability research conducted up to six times using ethyl alcohol as the eluent. As a result, this reasonably priced adsorbent might be employed as a beneficial and effective dye adsorbent for the removal of MB from water while maintaining the safety of the water quality.

Nanotechnology and nanoparticles have gained massive attention in the scientific community in recent years due to their valuable properties. Among various AgNPs synthesis methods, microbial approaches offer distinct advantages in terms of cost-effectiveness, biocompatibility, and eco-friendliness. In the present research work, investigators have synthesized three different types of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), namely AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, by using Klebsiella pneumoniae (MBC34), Micrococcus luteus (MBC23), and Enterobacter aerogenes (MBX6), respectively. The morphological, chemical, and elemental features of the synthesized AgNPs were analyzed by using UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) and energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDX). UV-Vis absorbance peaks were obtained at 475, 428, and 503 nm for AgNPs-K, AgNPs-M, and AgNPs-E, respectively. The XRD analysis confirmed the crystalline nature of the synthesized AgNPs, having peaks at 26.2°, 32.1°, and 47.2°. At the same time, the FTIR showed bands at 599, 963, 1,693, 2,299, 2,891, and 3,780 cm−1 for all the types of AgNPs indicating the presence of bacterial biomolecules with the developed AgNPs. The size and morphology of the AgNPs varied from 10 nm to several microns and exhibited spherical to porous sheets-like structures. The percentage of Ag varied from 37.8% (wt.%) to 61.6%, i.e., highest in AgNPs-K and lowest in AgNPs-M. Furthermore, the synthesized AgNPs exhibited potential for environmental remediation, with AgNPs-M exhibiting the highest removal efficiency (19.24% at 120 min) for methyl orange dye in simulated wastewater. Further, all three types of AgNPs were evaluated for the removal of methyl orange dye from the simulated wastewater, where the highest dye removal percentage was 19.24% at 120 min by AgNPs-M. Antibacterial potential of the synthesized AgNPs assessment against both Gram-positive (GPB) Bacillus subtilis (MBC23), B. cereus (MBC24), and Gram-negative bacteria Enterococcus faecalis (MBP13) revealed promising results, with AgNPs-M, exhibiting the largest zone of inhibition (12 mm) against GPB B. megaterium. Such investigation exhibits the potential of the bacteria for the synthesis of AgNPs with diverse morphology and potential applications in environmental remediation and antibacterial therapy-based synthesis of AgNPs.

Abstract Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), a perfluoroalkyl substance, has engendered alarm over its presence in water sources due to its intrinsic toxicity. Hence, there is a pressing need to identify efficacious adsorbents capable of removing PFAS derivatives from water. To achieve this, batch adsorption studies under various circumstances were employed to tune amorphous polymer networks regarding their morphological configuration, heat durability, surface area and capacity to adsorb PFOS in water. A facile, one-pot nucleophilic substitution reaction was employed to synthesize amorphous polymer networks using triazine derivatives as building units for monomers. Notably, POP-3 exhibited a superlative adsorption capacity, with a removal efficiency of 97.8%, compared to 90.3% for POP-7. POP-7 exhibited a higher specific surface area (SBET) of 232 m2 g−1 compared to POP-3 with a surface area of 5.2 m2 g−1. Additionally, the study emphasizes the importance of electrostatic forces in PFOS adsorption, with pH being a significant element, as seen by changes in the PFOS sorption process by both polymeric networks under neutral, basic and acidic environments. The optimal pH value for the PFOS removal process using both polymers was found to be 4. Also, POP-7 exhibited a better thermal stability performance (300 °C) compared to POP-3 (190 °C). Finally, these findings indicate the ease with which amorphous polymeric frameworks may be synthesized as robust and effective adsorbents for the elimination of PFOS from waterbodies.

This review article provides useful information on TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts and their derivatives in removing organic contaminants such as dyes, hydrocarbons, pesticides, etc. Also, the reaction mechanisms of TiO2 and ZnO photocatalysts and their derivatives were investigated. In addition, the impact of adding metallic (e.g., Ag, Co, Pt, Pd, Cu, Au, and Ni) and non-metallic (e.g., C, N, O, and S) cocatalysts to their structure on the photodegradation efficiency of organic compounds was thoroughly studied. Moreover, the advantages and disadvantages of various synthesis procedures of ZnO and TiO2 nanocatalysts were discussed and compared. Furthermore, the impact of photocatalyst dosage, photocatalyst structure, contaminant concentration, pH, light intensity and wavelength, temperature, and reaction time on the photodegradation efficiency were studied. According to previous studies, adding metallic and non-metallic cocatalysts to the TiO2 and ZnO structure led to a remarkable enhancement in their stability and reusability. In addition, metallic and non-metallic cocatalysts attached to TiO2 and ZnO demonstrated remarkable photocatalytic efficiency in removing organic contaminants.

In this study, a novel method for the high-performance treatment of oily wastewater was introduced using a tungsten (VI) oxide (WO3)/MXene composite membrane based on poly (arylene ether sulfone) (PAES). Composite membranes were fabricated with superhydrophilic (SH) and superoleophobic (SO) characteristics, which allow for the high-performance treatment of oily wastewater. The fabricated composite membrane can also photodegrade organic types of pollutants with just a short period of UV, enabling self-cleaning and anti-fouling properties. Moreover, the comprehensive characterization of the composite membrane through FTIR, SEM, and XRD analyses yielded valuable insights. The FTIR analysis revealed the characteristic peaks of WO3, MXene, PAES, and the synthesized composite membrane, providing essential information on the chemical composition and properties of the materials. The XRD results demonstrated the crystal structures of WO3, MXene, PAES, and the synthesized composite membrane, further enhancing our understanding of the composite membrane. Additionally, the SEM images illustrated the surface and cross-section of the fabricated membranes, highlighting the differences in pore size and porosity between the PAES membrane and the WO3–MXene composite membrane, which directly impact permeate flux. The study showed that the composite membrane had a remarkable recovery time of only 0.25 h, and the efficiency of the separation process and water flux recovered to 99.98% and 6.4 L/m2.h, respectively. The joint influence of WO3 and MXene on composite membranes degraded contaminants into non-polluting substances after sunlight irradiation. This process effectively solves the treatment performance and decrease in permeate flux caused by contamination. The technology is membrane-based filtration, which is a simple and advanced method for treating polluted water. This innovative work offers promising solutions to address water pollution challenges and holds potential for practical applications from a self-cleaning and anti-fouling point of view.

Over the last decade there has been a huge increase in the green synthesis of nanoparticles. Moreover, there is a continuous increase in harnessing the potential of microorganisms for the development of efficient and biocompatible nanoparticles around the globe. In the present research work, investigators have synthesized TiO2 NPs by harnessing the potential of Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 (Gram-positive) bacteria. The formation and confirmation of the TiO2 NPs synthesized by bacteria were carried out by using UV-Vis spectroscopy, Fourier transforms infrared (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX/EDS). The size of the synthesized TiO2 NPs was 80–120 nm which was spherical to irregular in shape as revealed by SEM. FTIR showed the characteristic bands of Ti-O in the range of 400–550 cm−1 and 924 cm−1 while the band at 2930 cm−1 confirmed the association of bacterial biomolecules with the synthesized TiO2 NPs. XRD showed two major peaks; 27.5° (rutile phase) and 45.6° (anatase phase) for the synthesized TiO2 NPs. Finally, the potential of the synthesized TiO2 NPs was assessed as an antibacterial agent and photocatalyst. The remediation of Methylene blue (MB) and Orange G (OG) dyes was carried out under UV- light and visible light for a contact time of 150–240 min respectively. The removal efficiency for 100 ppm MB dye was 25.75% and for OG dye was 72.24% under UV light, while in visible light, the maximum removal percentage for MB and OG dye was 98.85% and 80.43% respectively at 90 min. Moreover, a kinetic study and adsorption isotherm study were carried out for the removal of both dyes, where the pseudo-first-order for MB dye is 263.269 and 475554.176 mg/g for OG dye. The pseudo-second-order kinetics for MB and OG dye were 188.679 and 1666.667 mg/g respectively. In addition to this, the antibacterial activity of TiO2 NPs was assessed against Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 (Gram-positive) and Escherichia coli MTCC 8933 (Gram-negative) where the maximum zone of inhibition in Bacillus subtilis MTCC 8322 was about 12 mm, and for E. coli 16 mm.

The primary goal of this experiment is to examine the effectiveness of Pseudomonas aeruginosa strain PAR as a rhizobacterium that promotes plant growth in mitigating the negative effects of fluoride-induced stress in tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill.) plants. A total of 16 rhizobacterial strains were tested for plant growth-promoting (PGP) attributes, with isolates S1, S2, and S3 exhibiting different characteristics. Furthermore, growth kinetics studies revealed that these isolates were resilient to fluoride stress (10, 20, 40, and 80 ppm), with isolate S2 exhibiting notable resilience compared to the other two strains. Phylogenetic analysis revealed isolate S2 as P. aeruginosa strain PAR. Physiological analyses demonstrated that P. aeruginosa strain PAR had a beneficial impact on plant properties under fluoride stress, comprising seed germination, root length, shoot height, relative water content, and leaf area, the strain also impacted the buildup of glycine betaine, soluble sugar, and proline, demonstrating its significance in enhancing plant stress tolerance. In P. aeruginosa strain PAR-treated plants, chlorophyll content increased while malondialdehyde (MDA) levels decreased, indicating enhanced photosynthetic efficiency and less oxidative stress. The strain modified antioxidant enzyme action (catalase, ascorbate, glutathione reductase, peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase), which contributed to improved stress resilience. Mineral analysis revealed a decrease in sodium and fluoride concentrations while increasing magnesium, potassium, phosphorus, and iron levels, emphasizing the strain’s significance in nutrient management. Correlation and principal component analysis revealed extensive correlations between physiological and biochemical parameters, underscoring P. aeruginosa strain PAR’s multifaceted impact on plant growth and stress response. This study offers valuable information on effectively utilizing PGPR, particularly P. aeruginosa strain PAR, in fluoride-contaminated soils for sustainable agriculture. It presents a promising biological strategy to enhance crop resilience and productivity.

An arid climate is a unique condition that has a significant impact on the growth of crops and natural vegetation. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is a crucial remotely sensed measurement of greenness due to its strong correlation with crop and vegetation growth and productivity. In the present study, the spatiotemporal dynamics of NDVI were analyzed from 2000 to 2021 in the segment of the arid western plain zone of Rajasthan, India. NDVI time-series data, as well as data related to climatic factors, viz., precipitation, soil moisture, evapotranspiration, and 2-m air temperature, were collected from Giovanni, the Goddard Earth Science dataset. The Mann–Kendall (MK) trend test and Sen’s slope depicted the long-term continuous time–frequency trend, while Karl Pearson’s correlation analysis depicted the significant relationship between all the factors except 2-m air temperature. The seasonal and mean monthly results of all the factors except 2-m air temperature showed considerable coherence with NDVI. The multiscale time–frequency decomposition or wavelet analysis depicted the fifth to the seventh month and the ninth to the 15th month of the cycle, showing the significance of the cropping pattern and the natural vegetation growth cycle. The cross-wavelet analysis further depicted important coherence, leading, and lagging phases among climatic factors and NDVI. Our research provided significant insights into the long-term variability and coherence of various climatic factors with NDVI that are applicable on regional and global scales.

Heavy metal pollution is a global problem that necessitates the development of innovative and environmentally friendly water treatment technologies. Polyoxazoline polymers, known for their biocompatibility, are explored for lead ion removal in water treatment. Poly 2-Methoxycarbonylpropyl-2-oxazoline is integrated into activated carbon via in situ polymer growth, optimizing loading through live polymerization. This study investigates intricate interactions between lead ions and functional groups, such as amide moieties and ester functionalities, in the resulting polyoxazoline-modified activated carbon composite (POZ-AC). This pioneering research opens avenues for the application of polyoxazoline polymers in water treatment, leveraging their established success in biomedical fields. The removal of lead ions by POZ-ACs followed the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The results showed that POZ-AC-20 had excellent adsorption capacity of 365 mg/g, achieved in a relatively short time of 37 min. Furthermore, the adsorbent maintained its performance for seven cycles, demonstrating its high reusability potential. However, the adsorption performance of POZ-ACs after seven adsorption–desorption cycles was gradually decreased due to polymer release into the water media because of the high degree of solubility of polyoxazoline polymers in water. This study provides critical insight into the potential use of polyoxazoline polymers, demonstrating their superior potential in water treatment applications, particularly since it is the first time these polymers have been explored for this purpose. Future research should focus on developing polyoxazoline polymers with less solubility in water while maintaining a high removal performance.

This study reports the enhancement of the physical adsorption of some insoluble lead compounds, from drinking water, onto polylactic acid (PLA) polymer and graphene oxide (GO) by filling with molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanoparticles (NPs). Based on the Lifshitz theory, we demonstrate the attractive nature of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions that are responsible for the physical adsorption between the cerussite (PbCO3), the pyromorphite (Pb5(PO4)3Cl), and the lead dioxide (PbO2) insoluble adsorbates and the GO/MoS2 and PLA/MoS2 adsorbent nanocomposites in water medium. Subsequently, we show an increase in the physical adsorption, at close and large separation distances ( Pb5(PO4)3Cl > PbCO3. Interestingly, we demonstrate that the physical adsorption strongly depended on the GO/MoS2 and PLA/MoS2 adsorbent type and weakly dependent to the lead compound adsorbates. For all “PbO2, Pb5(PO4)3Cl, and PbCO3” adsorbates, we demonstrate that the vdW adsorption potential and force were higher ∼6, ∼3.1, ∼2.2, and ∼1.9 times for GO than for PLA adsorbent for, respectively, filling ratios 0%, 10%, 20%, and 30% of MoS2 NPs.

A wide range of studies has been carried out to describe the equilibrium data of adsorption for the surface adsorption process. However, no extensive investigation has been carried out to evaluate the oil sludge based activated carbon surface adsorption. Therefore, the possibility of carbon active production using different oil sludges and consequently the adsorption mechanism of these kind of adsorbents is still unknown. In this study, a novel low-cost approach was introduced to synthesize the activated carbon using oil sludge applying a two-step process including carbonization and chemical activation. In this way, four different types of oil sludges were characterized and then applied to synthesize different carbon actives and their performance were investigated as an adsorbent. The results showed that all synthesized activated carbons, with about 6% ash and pH = 7 and the specific surface area of 110 m2/gr, have the ability to treatment of oily wastewater; which can be referred to the high carbon content (>80%). The iodine number and the efficiency of prepared activated carbon were obtained as 406.8 mg/g and 94%, respectively. The adsorption process was also studied at different process conditions such as temperature (308–338 K), pH value (3–9) and adsorbent amount (50–200 mg/L) to find the optimum condition for wastewater treatment. The results show that the pH value has an optimum in the adsorption rate (the maximum adsorption was measured at pH = 5) and the adsorption capacity can be reduced by increasing the temperature or decreasing the adsorbent amount. Moreover, three different adsorption isotherm models were applied, i.e., Langmuir, Temkin, and Freundlich isotherms; which the Langmuir equation was more suitable than others investigated isotherm models with R2 ≈ 0.999.

Removal of organic pollutants and metal ions from produced water by adsorption, using prepared activated carbon (AC) from sewage sludge, with chemical activations using NaOH, KOH and ZnCl2 separately and pyrolysis at different temperatures (500, 600 and 700 °C). Pure sludge and prepared ACs were analyzed using FTIR and XRD. The results showed 18% crystallinity compared to that of commercial AC, which has 44% crystallinity. The results of FTIR demonstrate that the properties of the post-treated affect the final products depending on the method used and that it contains similar functional groups to those present in the commercial AC, but at a higher peak intensity. Adsorption treatments were carried out at 25, 35 and 45 °C solution temperatures. The results showed that the removal of pollutants from produced water using prepared AC with all types of chemical activations reached 99.5%, such as commercial AC with 0.06 g dosage of adsorbent at pyrolysis temperatures of 500 and 600 °C and a solution temperature of 25 °C. The obtained results refer to the mechanism of exothermic reaction and physical adsorption. It was observed that despite the lower dosage of adsorbent of 0.01 g, a sufficient treatment of pollutants was achieved. This reveals the effectiveness of using sewage sludge as a cheap adsorbent. Also, using pure sewage sludge, the adsorption data showed a 95.2% removal of the pollutants. This result indicated that pure sludge has an efficient adsorption capacity and can be utilized as a cheap and environmentally friendly material. For the removal of manganese and cadmium metal ions from the produced water, the resultant data showed that more than 90% of manganese was adsorbed and more than 97% of cadmium was adsorbed, especially when using pure sewage sludge and prepared activated carbon with NaOH chemical activation at pyrolysis temperatures of 500 °C and 600 °C.

MCM-41, a mesoporous silica with a high surface area and hexagonal structure, was synthesized, and commercial nano-silicon dioxide (SiO2) was used as a solid adsorbed in post-combustion CO2 capture. The CO2 adsorption experiments were conducted in a fixed-bed adsorption system using 5–15 vol.% CO2/N2 at a flow rate of 100 mL/min at varying temperatures (20–80 °C) and atmospheric pressure. Analyses (X-ray diffraction, nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM)) revealed that the synthesized MCM-41 has mesoporous characteristics: a high surface area and large pore volumes. The CO2 adsorption capacity of MCM-41 and commercial nano-SiO2 increased considerably with increasing CO2 concentration and temperature, peaking at 60 °C. Below 60 °C, dynamics rather than thermodynamics governed the adsorption. Increasing the temperature from 60 to 80 °C decreased the adsorption capacity, and the reaction became thermodynamically dominant. Additionally, compared with commercial nano-SiO2, the MCM-41 sorbent demonstrated superior regenerability and thermal stability.

The disposal of biological waste into water bodies is a major global concern as it leads to water pollution resulting in the loss of plenty of revenue in the cleaning of water bodies. Here, in the present research work, sacred flowers were collected, segregated, sun-dried, and powdered. The dried floral powders (marigold and rose) were characterized by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), electron diffraction spectroscopy (EDS), Fourier transforms infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The microscopy revealed the irregular spherical shape of the sheet-like structure whose size varies in microns. The EDS revealed the elemental composition which was dominated by mainly carbon and oxygen. The XRD shows the presence of carbon (10-25ɵ) in the amorphous form and the absence of any crystalline phase in the biosorbents. The FT-IR showed peaks that conformed to the presence of functional groups like -OH and a carbonyl group. The dried powders were used as an economical and eco-friendly biosorbent for the removal of methyl red (MR) dye from the aqueous solutions by batch adsorption study. After 60 minutes of contact time, the marigold powder (MGP) and rose petal powder (RPP) showed decolorization of 61.16% and 56.08% for 2 ppm of MR dye. The kinetic revealed that the dye removal reaction does not follow the pseudo-first-order as well as the pseudo-second-order. The utilization of such waste-based biosorbents will minimize solid waste and also will provide an economical biosorbent for the removal of environmental pollutants.

This current study propose the use of crosslinked chitosan/nitrogen doped-graphene quantum dot nanocomposites (CS/NGQD) synthesized via glutaraldehyde as cross-linker to remove various pollutants including bacteria, proteins, fluoride, dyes, and pharmaceuticals. This nanomaterial was characterized using different techniques (FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, and Raman spectroscopy). This nanocomposite offered higher pollutants removal efficiencies compared to its component parts. Using CS/NGQD the removal reached 60% for proteins and 88% for the bacterial load. A significant removal enhancement was also obtained for pharmaceuticals (63% for chlorothiazide, 81% for carbamazepine, and 89% ranitidine), dyes (82% for Azo blue, 84% for methylene blue and 94% for orange G), and fluoride (42%). Interestingly, after 5 cycles of reuse, the nanocomposite remains efficient for the removal of pollutants from water.

This paper presents the theoretical and computation irreversibility investigation of the Ellis hybrid nanofluid flow (CuO-Al2O3 nanoparticles) model using both homogeneous and heterogeneous responses toward the horizontal porous stretching cylinder. The Joule heating, thermal radiation, and heat generation/absorption are all factors that affect thermal energy transport, all of which are explored. On the surface of the cylinder, the slip boundary conditions are enforced. Keeping in mind that the nonlinear partial differential equations (PDEs) are converted into nonlinear ordinary differential equations (ODEs), these ODEs are constructed from the mathematical flow model with the aid of proper transformations. With the help of the bvp4c MATLAB built-in method, the nonlinear system equations are tacked numerically. Graphical results are used to discuss the numerical aspects of different parameters. By increasing the curvature parameter, entropy generation increases while fluid velocity decreases. Elasticity and magnetic fields thin boundary layers. Realistically, as liquid porosity increases, momentum boundary layer diminishes.

ZnO is a semiconductor material that has important physical and chemical properties, which are frequently and significantly enhanced by the addition of impurities, such as doping. A study of the structural properties of pristine and functionalized (i.e., doped with Antimony and Tungsten) ZnO nanoparticles has been conducted for the photocatalyst-based degradation of methylene blue (MB) dye under both Ultraviolet (UV) and solar light. Authors have used a 1% concentration of dopant for doping purposes. The synthesized materials were characterized for structural analysis, functional group identification, spectroscopic measurements, and morphological examination using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform-infrared (FTIR), UV-Vis spectroscopy (UV-Vis), and Field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) techniques. XRD analysis confirmed that the synthesized-doped materials retained the wurtzite hexagonal structure with a purity of 99%. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) analysis data reveals the average size of pure ZnO-NPs was found to be 7 nm; after doping the size was found to be increased to 18 nm and 9.55 nm, respectively, for ZnO-W and ZnO-Sb. As per FESEM analysis results, minor morphological changes were observed after doping. The Ultraviolet Differential reflectance spectroscopy UV-DRS study revealed the confirmation of ZnO doping with antimony and tungsten, which exhibited a blue shift. The decrease in the band-gap on doping makes the ZnO-NPs more efficient for photocatalytic applications. The photocatalytic efficiency of pristine and doped ZnO-NPs catalysts for methylene blue photocatalytic degradation (PCD) was analyzed under both UV and solar irradiation. This study analyzed the effect of pH, nano-photocatalyst dose, and initial dye concentration (ICD) on the PCD of MB. The obtained analytical results showed that the ideal conditions for the PCD of MB dye are as follows: pH = 9, the quantity of the nano-photocatalyst used was 300 mg/L, and an initial MB dye dose of 10 ppm. These conditions lead to a PCD of about 91% of the MB dye by using ZnO-Sb nano-photocatalyst on exposure to solar radiation. The reusability study also revealed the stability of nano-photocatalysts. The current research may pave the way for the removal of hazardous dyes from wastewater discharged by many industries.

In this work, the capture of carbon dioxide using a dense hollow fiber membrane was studied experimentally and theoretically. The factors affecting the flux and recovery of carbon dioxide were studied using a lab-scale system. Experiments were conducted using a mixture of methane and carbon dioxide to simulate natural gas. The effect of changing the CO2 concentration from 2 to 10 mol%, the feed pressure from 2.5 to 7.5 bar, and the feed temperature from 20 to 40 °C, was investigated. Depending on the solution diffusion mechanism, coupled with the Dual sorption model, a comprehensive model was implemented to predict the CO2 flux through the membrane, based on resistance in the series model. Subsequently, a 2D axisymmetric model of a multilayer HFM was proposed to simulate the axial and radial diffusion of carbon dioxide in a membrane. In the three domains of fiber, the CFD technique was used to solve the equations for the transfer of momentum and mass transfer by using the COMSOL 5.6. Modeling results were validated with 27 experiments, and there was a good agreement between the simulation results and the experimental data. The experimental results show the effect of operational factors, such as the fact that temperature was directly on both gas diffusivity and mass transfer coefficient. Meanwhile, the effect of pressure was exactly the opposite, and the concentration of CO2 had almost no effect on both the diffusivity and the mass transfer coefficient. In addition, the CO2 recovery changed from 9% at a pressure equal to 2.5 bar, temperature equal to 20 °C, and a concentration of CO2 equal to 2 mol%, to 30.3% at a pressure equal to 7.5 bar, temperature equal to 30 °C, and concentration of CO2 equal 10 mol%; these conditions are the optimal operating point. The results also manifested that the operational factors that directly affect the flux are pressure and CO2 concentration, while there was no clear effect of temperature. This modeling offers valuable data about the feasibility studies and economic evaluation of a gas separation unit operation as a helpful unit in the industry.

Every year, a huge amount of water is polluted by various sources, out of which coal fly ash (CFA) is one of the major pollutants. CFA has a large number of toxic metals, which reaches water bodies by coming in contact with water or rain. Due to heavy-metal contamination, water becomes unfit for drinking for human beings, which in long term may cause several disorders. Thus, iron oxide nanoparticles (IONPs) recovered from waste, such as CFA, could be the most promising material for treating wastewater, due to their low-cost, recyclable nature and magnetic property. The synthesis of IONPs from CFA involves three sequential steps. The first step involves extraction of ferrous materials from CFA, followed by acidic treatment of ferrous materials to obtain acidic leachate, and lastly the precipitation of iron oxides by an alkali. The particle size of the synthesized IONPs varied from 30–70 nm and purity was about 90–93%, as confirmed by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and electron diffraction spectroscopy (EDS). Further, the synthesized IONPs were used for the remediation of various heavy metals, especially Pb and Cr ions from 20% CFA aqueous solutions. The heavy-metal removal efficiency of IONPs varied from 40–70%. The developed method suggests heavy-metal removal from wastewater by using an economical and greener route.

For the simultaneous removal of water contaminants, a novel nanocomposite has been produced. The iron oxide core with silica shell was used to prepare functional magnetic polymer Fe3O4/SiO2/glycidyl methacrylate (GMA)-S-SH nanocomposite. The sulfur functional nanocomposite is suitable for the immobilization of laccase enzyme. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using FT-IR spectroscopy, SEM, TEM, XRD, and magnetometer. The effect of pH, temperature, and storage time over free and immobilized enzyme was studied that indicating the higher stability of immobilized enzyme than that free one. The prepared novel nanocomposite showed high adsorption capacity toward Cd+2 ions in addition to the degradation of meloxicam and piroxicam anti-inflammatory drugs. The removal efficiency reached up to 94% ± 2%, 92% ± 2%, and 95% ± 2% for Cd+2 ions, meloxicam, and piroxicam, respectively at optimum pH and temperature. Also, the results show that this nanocomposite is recyclable. The efficient removal of Cd+2 ions and pharmaceuticals can be reached up to four cycles. We conclude that the prepared nanocomposite is promising for water treatment.

A hybrid composite based on metal-organic framework (MOF) was chemically fabricated by embedding the magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles within amino-functionalized porous La-MOF (MOF/NH2) to produce a highly efficient and reusable composite of MOF/NH2/Fe3O4. Different proper techniques were used for the characterization of surface morphology and chemical arrangement of the prepared MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite. The characterization results using various techniques including Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), Brunauer, Emmett, and Teller analysis (BET), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) approved the successful fabrication of MOF with amino arms on its surface besides the well magnetization using magnetic nanoparticles. The MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed enhanced adsorption capacity (618 mg/g) toward methyl orange (MO) anionic dye which is higher than many commercial reported adsorbents due to the presence of many types of adsorption sites (NH2 groups and lanthanum sites), large surface area of MOF, and the synergetic effect of magnetic nanoparticles. Moreover, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite showed selective adsorption of MO dye from dye mixtures owing to the electrostatic attraction. Also, the MOF/NH2/Fe3O4 composite retained over 90% of its efficiency for the dye removal even after six successive cycles. So, the present study provided a practical strategy for the design of functional MOF hybrid composites. Furthermore, due to the adaptability of its architectural form, it is a potential adsorbent material for industrial wastewater treatment uses.

Herein, we report the nanofabrication of magnetic calcium ferrite (CaFe2O4) with nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (N-GO) via facile ultrasonication method to produce CaFe2O4/N-GO nanocomposite for the potential removal of reactive orange 12 (RO12) dye from aqueous solution. The successful construction of the nanocomposite was confirmed using different characterization techniques including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The magnetic properties were studied using vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) indicating ferromagnetic behavior of the synthesized materials that facilitate their separation using an external magnetic field after adsorption treatment. The addition of N-GO to CaFe2O4 nanoparticles enhanced the BET surface area from 24 to 52.93 m2/g as resulted from the N2 adsorption-desorption isotherm. The adsorption of the synthesized nanomaterials is controlled by several parameters (initial concentration of dye, contact time, adsorbent dosage, and pH), and the RO12 dye removal on the surface of CaFe2O4 nanoparticles and CaFe2O4/N-GO nanocomposite was reached through the chemisorption process as indicated from the kinetic study. The adsorption isotherm study indicated that the adsorption process of RO12 dye was best described through the Langmuir isotherm approving the monolayer adsorption. According to the Langmuir model, the maximum adsorption capacity for RO12 was 250 and 333.33 mg/g for CaFe2O4 nanoparticles and CaFe2O4/N-GO nanocomposite, respectively. The adsorption capacity offered by CaFe2O4/N-GO nanocomposite was higher than reported in the literature for adsorbent materials. Additionally, the regeneration study indicated that CaFe2O4/N-GO nanocomposite is reusable and cost-effective adsorbent. Therefore, the nanofabricated CaFe2O4/N-GO hybrid material is a promising adsorbent for water treatment.

Provision of safe drinking water, devoid of aetiologies, is an all-time challenge due to the usage of unsafe chemicals in most of the water treatment processes. The main objective of the present paper is to evaluate the use of Moringa oleifera (MO) as a natural coagulant in coagulation/flocculation (C/F) followed by the ultrafiltration (UF) of Final Effluent Treatment Plant wastewater treatment which can also be employed as an alternative to the present conventional methods of treatment. Process efficiency was evaluated in terms of chemical oxygen demand (COD), biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), turbidity, total hardness, alkalinity, ammoniacal nitrogen, and zeta potential along with permeability and fouling behaviour of the membrane. A significant improvement in both the physical and chemical characteristics of the effluent quality is showing a clearer colour and a greater reduction in BOD (89.74%) and COD (63.80%) values, while pH was in the acceptable range for effluent disposal. The results indicate a lower membrane fouling rate (49%), an increase in permeate flow, and better quality of the permeate, proving that the C/F-UF treatment is an effective and efficient technique for wastewater treatment. Eventually, the treated wastewater obtained with this process generates better quality water and preserves the aquatic ecosystem.

The unique biological and physicochemical characteristics of biogenic (green-synthesized) nanomaterials (NMs) have attracted significant interest in different fields, with applications in the agrochemical, food, medication delivery, cosmetics, cellular imaging, and biomedical industries. To synthesize biogenic nanomaterials, green synthesis techniques use microorganisms, plant extracts, or proteins as bio-capping and bio-reducing agents and their role as bio-nanofactories for material synthesis at the nanoscale size. Green chemistry is environmentally benign, biocompatible, nontoxic, and economically effective. By taking into account the findings from recent investigations, we shed light on the most recent developments in the green synthesis of nanomaterials using different types of microbes and plants. Additionally, we cover different applications of green-synthesized nanomaterials in the food and textile industries, water treatment, and biomedical applications. Furthermore, we discuss the future perspectives of the green synthesis of nanomaterials to advance their production and applications.

Water resources management is one of the most important issues nowadays. The necessity of sustainable management of water resources, as well as finding a solution to the water shortage crisis, is a question of our survival on our planet. One of the most important ways to solve this problem is to use water purification systems for wastewater resources, and one of the most necessary reasons for the research of water desalination systems and their development is the problem related to water scarcity and the crisis in the world that has arisen because of it. The present study employs a carbon nanotube-containing nanocomposite to enhance membrane performance. Additionally, the rise in flow brought on by a reduction in the membrane’s clogging surface was investigated. The filtration of brackish water using synthetic polyamide reverse osmosis nanocomposite membrane, which has an electroconductivity of 4000 Ds/cm, helped the study achieve its goal. In order to improve porosity and hydrophilicity, the modified raw, multi-walled carbon nanotube membrane was implanted using the polymerization process. Every 30 min, the rates of water flow and rejection were evaluated. The study’s findings demonstrated that the membranes have soft hydrophilic surfaces, and by varying concentrations of nanocomposite materials in a prescribed way, the water flux increased up to 30.8 L/m2h, which was notable when compared to the water flux of the straightforward polyamide membranes. Our findings revealed that nanocomposite membranes significantly decreased fouling and clogging, and that the rejection rate was greater than 97 percent for all pyrrole-based membranes. Finally, an artificial neural network is utilized to propose a predictive model for predicting flux through membranes. The model benefits hyperparameter tuning, so it has the best performance among all the studied models. The model has a mean absolute error of 1.36% and an R2 of 0.98.

The reverse osmosis performance in removing nickel ions from artificial wastewater was experimentally and mathematically assessed. The impact of temperature, pressure, feed concentration, and feed flow rate on the permeate flux and Ni (II) rejection % were studied. Experiments were conducted using a SEPA CF042 Membrane Test Skid—TFC BW30XFR with applied pressures of 10, 20, 30, and 40 bar and feed concentrations of 25, 50, 100, and 150 ppm with varying operating temperatures of 25, 35, and 45 °C, while the feed flow rate was changed between 2, 3.2, and 4.4 L/min. The permeate flux and the Ni (II) removal % were directly proportional to the feed temperature and operating pressure, but inversely proportional to the feed concentration, where the permeate flux increased by 49% when the temperature was raised from 25 to 45 °C, while the Ni (II) removal % slightly increased by 4%. In addition, the permeate flux increased by 188% and the Ni (II) removal % increased to 95.19% when the pressure was raised from 10 to 40 bar. The feed flow rate, on the other hand, had a negligible influence on the permeate flux and Ni (II) removal %. The temperature correction factor (TCF) was determined to be directly proportional to the feed temperature, but inversely proportional to the operating pressure; nevertheless, the TCF was unaffected either by the feed flow rate or the feed concentration. Based on the experimental data, mathematical models were generated for both the permeate flux and nickel removal %. The results showed that both models matched the experimental data well.

In the present study, a ternary magnetic nanocomposite (SiO2/MnFe2O4/ZIF-8) was synthesized via the embedding of the SiO2/MnFe2O4 nanocomposite within the metal–organic framework (ZIF-8). The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using suitable techniques including FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TEM, VSM, and BET. The nanocomposite showed a high surface area (SBET = 831 m2·g−1) and superparamagnetic behavior (23.7 emu·g−1). All characterization techniques confirmed the successful combination of three nanocomposite parts (MnFe2O4, SiO2, and ZIF-8). The nanocomposite was examined for the adsorption of organic dyes, malachite green (MG) and methyl red (MR), from aqueous solutions. The adsorption conditions including ionic strength, contact time, pH, and adsorbent dosage were optimized by studying their change effect. The SiO2/MnFe2O4/ZIF-8 nanocomposite showed high adsorption capacities (1000.03 and 1111.12 mg/g) for the removal of MG and MR, respectively, from water. The isotherm and kinetics studies indicated that the adsorption of MG and MR dyes on the surface of the SiO2/MnFe2O4/ZIF-8 nanocomposite followed the Langmuir isotherm model and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, suggesting the monolayer chemisorption mechanism. The reusability study of up to five successive cycles indicated the successful reuse of the SiO2/MnFe2O4/ZIF-8 adsorbent for dye removal from wastewater. The comparison of the present adsorbent to the previously reported adsorbents indicated that it is a promising adsorbent for dye adsorption from wastewater and must be investigated in the future for the removal of additional pollutants.

In this study, a novel concept of nanofiltration process of drinking water based on capillary-driven nanofiltration is demonstrated using a bio-based nanocomposites’ nanofilter as free power: a green and sustainable solution. Based on Lifshitz and Young–Laplace theories, we show that the chitosan (CS), cellulose acetate (CLA), and Polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) polymer matrixes demonstrate hydrophobic behavior, which leads to the draining of water from nanopores when negative capillary pressure is applied and consequently prevents the capillary-driven nanofiltration process. By incorporating 10%, 20%, and 30% volume fraction of titanium dioxide (TiO2) nanoparticles (NPs) to the polymers’ matrixes, we demonstrate a wetting conversion from hydrophobic to hydrophilic behavior of these polymer nanocomposites. Subsequently, the threshold volume fraction of the TiO2 NPs for the conversion from draining (hydrophobic) to filling (hydrophilic) by capillary pressure were found to be equal to 5.1%, 10.9%, and 13.9%, respectively, for CS/TiO2, CLA/TiO2, and PVDF/TiO2 nanocomposites. Then, we demonstrated the negligible effect of the gravity force on capillary rise as well as the capillary-driven flow for nanoscale pore size. For nanofilters with the same effective nanopore radius, porosity, pore shape factor, and tortuosity, results from the modified Lucas–Washburn model show that the capillary rise as well as the capillary-driven water volume increase with increased volume fraction of the TiO2 NPs for all nanocomposite nanofilter. Interestingly, the capillary-driven water volume was in range (5.26–6.39) L/h·m2 with 30% volume fraction of TiO2 NPs, which support our idea for capillary-driven nanofiltration as zero energy consumption nano-filtration process. Correspondingly, the biodegradable CS/TiO2 and CLA/TiO2 nanocomposites nanofilter demonstrate capillary-driven water volume higher, ~1.5 and ~1.2 times, respectively, more than the synthetic PVDF/TiO2 nanocomposite.

In this paper, we assessed the ability of two strains of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, in viable and dead forms, to remove ochratoxin A (OTA) from an artificially contaminated synthetic grape juice medium (SGM) (10 µg OTA/L) and a naturally contaminated grape juice (6.64 µg OTA/L). The first strain, named Levulin FB, is a commercial yeast used in making wine. The second, named SC5, is an autochthonous strain isolated from table grapes. OTA concentrations in juices before and after their contact with yeast cells were assessed. A significant decrease in OTA level (p < 0.05) in the SGM medium and in the natural grape juice was observed after 1 h of adding yeast cells (20 g/L) in viable and heat-treated forms. It was inferred that the dead forms of the two strains were more able to eliminate OTA than their viable forms in both media. This study demonstrates the potential application of an autochthonous yeast for the natural decontamination of grape juice from fungal toxins.

Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) have become a major global concern due to their large amount of utilization every year and their calcitrant nature. Due to their continuous utilization and calcitrant nature, it has led to several environmental hazards. The conventional approaches are expensive, less efficient, laborious, time-consuming, and expensive. Therefore, here in this review the authors suggest the shortcomings of conventional techniques by using nanoparticles and nanotechnology. Nanotechnology has shown immense potential for the remediation of such POPs within a short period of time with high efficiency. The present review highlights the use of nanoremediation technologies for the removal of POPs with a special focus on nanocatalysis, nanofiltration, and nanoadsorption processes. Nanoparticles such as clays, zinc oxide, iron oxide, aluminum oxide, and their composites have been used widely for the efficient remediation of POPs. Moreover, filtrations such as nanofiltration and ultrafiltration have also shown interest in the remediation of POPs from wastewater. From several pieces of literature, it has been found that nano-based techniques have shown complete removal of POPs from wastewater in comparison to conventional methods, but the cost is one of the major issues when it comes to nano- and ultrafiltration. Future research in nano-based techniques for POP remediation will solve the cost issue and will make it one of the most widely accepted and available techniques. Nano-based processes provide a sustainable solution to the problem of POPs.

Olive manufacturing generates the most polluting wastewater. Olive mill wastewater (OMW) contains a large amount of organic and inorganic fractions. Olive-oil-producing countries have investigated several treatments and valorization processes for better management of this waste. The Tunisian government adopted OMW spreading on soil to manage the waste and improve the organic matter in the soil of olive groves. The examination of soil after OMW spreading was set up to assess the physicochemical changes and better comprehend the soil’s responses. An incubation of two types of artificial soil treated with 40 and 80 m3·ha−1 of OMW led to increased organic matter, phosphorus, nitrogen and potassium contents. The adsorption of the phenolic compounds in soil was dependent on the clay type and was shown by the behavior of the soil composed of bentonite clay. The germination index of tomato and alfalfa seeds recorded a positive test with OMW applied on soil, and it was in relation to the species utilized. This practice seems to be a solution for the management of OMW because it limits the use of chemical fertilizers and might be a convenient source of carbon in organic farming.

Heavy metals are toxic substances that pose a real danger to humans and organisms, even at low concentration. Therefore, there is an urgent need to remove heavy metals. Herein, the nanocellulose (NC) was synthesized by the hydrolysis of cellulose using sulfuric acid, and then functionalized using polypyrrole (ppy) through a polymerization reaction to produce polypyrrole/nanocellulose (ppy/NC) nanocomposite. The synthesized nanocomposite was characterized using familiar techniques including XRD, FT-IR, SEM, TEM, and TGA. The obtained results showed a well-constructed nanocomposite with excellent thermal stability in the nano-sized scale. The adsorption experiments showed that the ppy/NC nanocomposite was able to adsorb hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The optimum pH for the removal of the heavy metal was pH 2. The interfering ions showed minor effect on the adsorption of Cr(VI) resulted from the competition between ions for the adsorption sites. The adsorption kinetics were studied using pseudo 1st order and pseudo 2nd order models indicating that the pseudo second order model showed the best fit to the experimental data, signifying that the adsorption process is controlled by the chemisorption mechanism. Additionally, the nanocomposite showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 560 mg/g according to Langmuir isotherm. The study of the removal mechanism showed that Cr(VI) ions were removed via the reduction of high toxic Cr(VI) to lower toxic Cr(III) and the electrostatic attraction between protonated ppy and Cr(VI). Interestingly, the ppy/NC nanocomposite was reused for Cr(VI) uptake up to six cycles showing excellent regeneration results. Subsequently, Cr(VI) ions can be effectively removed from aqueous solution using the synthesized nanocomposite as reusable and cost-effective adsorbent.

Free laccase has limitations for its use in industrial applications that require laccase immobilization on proper support, to improve its catalytic activity. Herein, the nanoparticles of magnetic iron oxide (Fe3O4) and copper ferrite (CuFe2O4) were successfully used as support for the immobilization of free laccase, using glutaraldehyde as a cross-linker. The immobilization conditions of laccase on the surface of nanoparticles were optimized to reach the maximum activity of the immobilized enzyme. The synthesized free nanoparticles and the nanoparticle-immobilized laccase were characterized using different techniques, including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM), and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). CuFe2O4 nanoparticles, as support, enhanced laccase activity compared to free laccase and Fe3O4 nanoparticle-immobilized laccase that appeared during the study of pH, temperature, and storage stability on free and immobilized laccase. The CuFe2O4 and Fe3O4 nanoparticle-immobilized laccase showed superior activity in a wide pH range, temperature range, and storage period, up to 20 days at 4.0 °C, when compared to free laccase. Additionally, the synthesized nanobiocatalysts were examined and optimized for the biodegradation of the anionic dye Direct Red 23 (DR23). HPLC analysis was used to confirm the dye degradation. The reusability of immobilized laccases for the biodegradation of DR23 dye was investigated for up to six successive cycles, with a decolorization efficiency over 70.0%, which indicated good reusability and excellent stability.

The removal of heavy metals from drinking water has attracted great interest in water purification technology. In this study, a biocompatible Polyaniline (PANI) polymer filled with TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles (NPs) is considered as an adsorbent of cadmium iodide from water. Theoretical investigation of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions deduced from the Hamaker constant calculated on the basis of Lifshitz theory was presented. It was found that the surface energy as well as the work of adhesion between water and PANI/NPs across air increases with an increasing volume fraction of the TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles. Consequently, an increase in the Laplace pressure around the cavities/porosities was found, which leads to the enhancement of the specific contact surface between water and PANI/NPs. On the other hand, for the interactions between CdI2 particles and PANI/NPs surface across water, we show that the interactions are governed principally by the attractive London dispersion forces. The vdW energy and force increase proportionally with the augmentation of the volume fraction of nanoparticles and of the radius of the CdI2 particle. Particularly, the PANI/TiO2 has been proved to be a better candidate for adsorption of cadmium iodide from water than PANI/ZnO.

We report in the present study the in situ formation of magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4 or Fe) within porous N-doped carbon (Fe3O4/N@C) via simple impregnation, polymerization, and calcination sequentially. The synthesized nanocomposite structural properties were investigated using different techniques showing its good construction. The formed nanocomposite showed a saturation magnetization (Ms) of 23.0 emu g−1 due to the implanted magnetic nanoparticles and high surface area from the porous N-doped carbon. The nanocomposite was formed as graphite-type layers. The well-synthesized nanocomposite showed a high adsorption affinity toward Pb2+ toxic ions. The nanosorbent showed a maximum adsorption capacity of 250.0 mg/g toward the Pb2+ metallic ions at pH of 5.5, initial Pb2+ concentration of 180.0 mg/L, and room temperature. Due to its superparamagnetic characteristics, an external magnet was used for the fast separation of the nanocomposite. This enabled the study of the nanocomposite reusability toward Pb2+ ions, showing good chemical stability even after six cycles. Subsequently, Fe3O4/N@C nanocomposite was shown to have excellent efficiency for the removal of toxic Pb2+ ions from water.

Several trusted tasks use consensus algorithms to solve agreement challenges. Usually, consensus agreements are used to ensure data integrity and reliability in untrusted environments. In many distributed networking fields, the Proof of Work (PoW) consensus algorithm is commonly used. However, the standard PoW mechanism has two main limitations, where the first is the high power consumption and the second is the 51% attack vulnerability. In this paper, we look to improve the PoW consensus protocol by introducing several proof rounds. Any given consensus node should resolve the game of the current round Roundi before participating in the next round Roundi+1. Any node that resolves the game of Roundi can only pass to the next round if a predetermined number of solutions has been found by other nodes. The obtained evaluation results of this technique show significant improvements in terms of energy consumption and robustness against the 51% and Sybil attacks. By fixing the number of processes, we obtained an energy gain rate of 15.63% with five rounds and a gain rate of 19.91% with ten rounds.

The removal of heavy metals from water has become a global environmental problem. Various materials have been applied as adsorbent to remove metals from water. In this field, nanomaterials have been gaining increasing interest due to their exceptional properties. In this work, we discuss the synthesis of a core-shell structure nanocomposite by the modification of magnetic chitosan (CS) (Fe3O4/CS) with polyethylenimine (PEI) to produce Fe3O4/CS/PEI composite for the adsorption of arsenic ions (As(V) and As(III)) from aqueous solution. The synthesized materials were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM), and vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM). The results indicated the successful combination of three components of the nanocomposite. The adsorption conditions were optimized by studying the effect of different parameters included pH, contact time, initial concentration, and adsorbent dosage. The optimum adsorption pH was found to be 6.7 while the optimum adsorbent dosage was found to be 2.0 and 1.5 g/L for As(III) and As(V), respectively. The removal efficiency for the uptake of As(III) and As(V) ions over Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite at optimum conditions was found to be 99.5 and 99.7%, respectively. The experimental results were fitted using Freundlich’s and Langmuir’s isotherms. The data were more fitted to Langmuir isotherm providing a suggestion of monolayer adsorption with maximum adsorption capacity equal to 77.61 and 86.50 mg/g for the removal of As(III) and As(V), respectively. Moreover, linear regression coefficient (R2) indicated that the adsorption of arsenic ions over the synthesized magnetic nanocomposite obeyed pseudo 2nd order suggesting the chemisorption process. The reusability of the nanosorbent for arsenic uptake using sodium hydroxide as eluent was also assessed up to five cycles. Interestingly, Fe3O4/CS/PEI nanocomposite can be considered as a promising adsorbent for As ions’ removal from water and should be tested for the removal of other pollutants.

In the current work, the heat flux in nucleate pool boiling has been predicted using the macrolayer and latent heat evaporation model. The wall superheat (ΔT) and macrolayer thickness (δ) are the parameters considered for predicting the heat flux. The influence of operating parameters on instantaneous conduction heat flux and average heat flux across the macrolayer are investigated. A comparison of the findings of current model with Bhat’s decreasing macrolayer model revealed a close agreement under the nucleate pool boiling condition at high heat flux. It is suggested that conduction heat transfer strongly rely on macrolayer thickness and wall superheat. The wall superheat and macrolayer thickness is found to significantly contribute to conduction heat transfer. The predicted results closely agree with the findings of Bhat’s decreasing macrolayer model for higher values of wall superheat signifying the nucleate boiling. The predicted results of the proposed model and Bhat’s existing model are validated by the experimental data. The findings also endorse the claim that predominant mode of heat transfer from heater surface to boiling liquid is the conduction across the macrolayer at the significantly high heat flux region of nucleate boiling.

A magnetic polymer-based nanocomposite was fabricated by the modification of an Fe3O4/SiO2 magnetic composite with polypyrrole (PPy) via co-precipitation polymerization to form PPy/Fe3O4/SiO2 for the removal of Congo red dye (CR) and hexavalent chromium Cr(VI) ions from water. The nanocomposite was characterized using various techniques including X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), vibration sample magnetometer, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The results confirm the successful fabrication of the nanocomposite in the size of nanometers. The effect of different conditions such as the contact time, adsorbent dosage, solution pH, and initial concentration on the adsorption process was investigated. The adsorption isotherm suggested monolayer adsorption of both contaminants over the PPy/Fe3O4/SiO2 nanocomposite following a Langmuir isotherm, with maximum adsorption of 361 and 298 mg.g−1 for CR dye and Cr(VI), respectively. Furthermore, the effect of water type on the adsorption process was examined, indicating the applicability of the PPy/Fe3O4/SiO2 nanocomposite for real sample treatment. Interestingly, the reusability of the nanocomposite for the removal of the studied contaminants was investigated with good results even after six successive cycles. All results make this nanocomposite a promising material for water treatment.

Abstract: Plant-parasitic nematodes are very common on cereal crops and cause economic losses via reduction in grain quality and quantity. During 2014, 83 soil samples were collected from wheat and barley fields in 21 districts of 13 provinces across five regions (Central Anatolia, Marmara, Aegean, Southeast Anatolia, and Black Sea Region) of Turkey. Cyst-forming nematodes were found in 66 samples (80%), and the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) sequencing and species-specific PCR identified the species in 64 samples as Heterodera filipjevi, Heterodera latipons, and Heterodera avenae. The predominant pathogenic cereal cyst nematode was H. filipjevi, which was found in all five regions surveyed. H. avenae was only detected in Southeast Anatolia whereas H. latipons was detected in Southeast Anatolia and Central Anatolia. ITS-rDNA phylogenetic analyses showed that H. avenae isolates from China clustered with H. australis, and Turkish isolates were closely related to European and USA isolates of this species. H. filipjevi from Turkey and China were clustered closely with those from the UK, Germany, Russia, and the USA. The density of many of these populations exceeded or approached the maximum threshold level for economic loss. To our knowledge, this is the first report of H. filipjevi in Diyarbakir, Edirne, and Kutahya provinces, and the first report of H. avenae in Diyarbakir Province. These results exhibit the most rigorous analysis to date on the occurrence and distribution of Heterodera spp. in Turkey's major wheat-producing areas, thus providing a basis for more specific resistance breeding, as well as other management practices.

Nowadays, people over the world face severe water scarcity despite the presence of several water sources. Adsorption is considered as the most efficient technique for the treatment of water containing biological, organic, and inorganic contaminants. For this purpose, materials from various origins (clay minerals, modified clays, zeolites, activated carbon, polymeric resins, etc.) have been considered as adsorbent for contaminants. Despite their cheapness and valuable properties, the use of clay minerals as adsorbent for wastewater treatment is limited due to many factors (low surface area, regeneration, and recovery limit, etc.). However, clay mineral can be used to enhance the performance of polymeric materials. The combination of clay minerals and polymers produces clay-polymers nanocomposites (CPNs) with advanced properties useful for pollutants removal. CPNs received a lot of attention for their efficient removal rate of various organic and inorganic contaminants via flocculation and adsorption ability. Three main classes of CPNs were developed (exfoliated nanocomposites (NCs), intercalated nanocomposites, and phase-separated microcomposites). The improved materials can be explored as novel and cost-effective adsorbents for the removal of organic and inorganic pollutants from water/wastewater. The literature reported the ability of CPNs to remove various pollutants such as bacteria, metals, phenol, tannic acid, pesticides, dyes, etc. CPNs showed higher adsorption capacity and efficient water treatment compared to the individual components. Moreover, CPNs offered better regeneration than clay materials. The present paper summarizes the different types of clay-polymers nanocomposites and their effective removal of different contaminants from water. Based on various criteria, CPNs future as promising adsorbent for water treatment is discussed.

Cactus is cultivated in many regions over the world. Because of its chemical composition and its valuable nutritional and biological characteristics, cactus finds applications in different sectors such as the pharmaceutical and the food industries. Interestingly, cactus materials (cladodes, fruit seeds, peel, etc) have been explored for their probable use as adsorbents for the removal of toxic heavy metals and dyes from wastewater. Various preparations methods were used to produce cactus material-based biosorbents. These biosrbents have been investigated and successfully used for the elimination of both heavy metal and dyes from aqueous solutions. Related results showed very promising pollutant removal efficiency associated with an interesting adsorption capacity similar to other materials from various origins. This paper explores various cactus biosorbents preparations. Furthermore, their efficiency in depollution and factors controlling the adsorption capacity will be discussed.
