The peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) has been identified as having protective effects in UC.Aim: The study aimed to investigate the efficacy of fenofibrate, a PPARα agonist, in UC.Methods: A total of 70 patients with mild to moderate UC were allocated randomly and assigned to two groups (n = 35 each) from Gastroenterology Department, Faculty of Medicine, Menoufia University. The mesalamine group received a placebo along with 1 g of mesalamine three times daily, while the fenofibrate group received 1 g of mesalamine three times and fenofibrate 160 mg once daily. The study duration was for six months. A gastroenterologist assessed patients by non-invasive Partial Mayo Score (PMS) and the Inflammatory Bowel Disease Questionnaire (IBDQ) to evaluate clinical response and remission. The serum levels of silent information regulator 1 (SIRT1), NOD-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP3), and adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK), as well as fecal calprotectin levels were examined to determine the biological effect of fenofibrate.Results: After treatment, the fenofibrate group showed statistically significant reductions in PMS (p = 0.044) and improved digestive domain of IBDQ (p = 0.023). Additionally, there were significant decreases in serum NLRP3 (p = 0.041) and fecal calprotectin (p = 0.035), along with significant increases in SIRT1 (p = 0.002) and AMPK (p = 0.0003). The fenofibrate group also had higher response and remission rates compared to the mesalamine group.Conclusion: Fenofibrate may be a promising adjunct for improving clinical outcomes, quality of life, and modulating inflammation in mild to moderate patients with UC.Trial Registration Identifier: NCT05781698.Keywords: Ulcerative colitis, Fenofibrate, Mesalamine, NLRP3/AMPK, PPAR&#x03B1

We report the measurement of K∗0 meson at midrapidity (|y|< 1.0) in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, and 39 GeV collected by the STAR experiment during the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) beam energy scan program. The transverse momentum spectra, yield, and average transverse momentum of K∗0 are presented as functions of collision centrality and beam energy. The K∗0/K yield ratios are presented for different collision centrality intervals and beam energies. The K∗0/K ratio in heavy-ion collisions are observed to be smaller than that in small-system collisions (e+e and p+p). The K∗0/K ratio follows a similar centrality dependence to that observed in previous RHIC and Large Hadron Collider measurements. The data favor the scenario of the dominance of hadronic rescattering over regeneration for K∗0 production in the hadronic phase of the medium.

Measurements of mass and Λ binding energy of Λ4H and Λ4He in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV are presented, with an aim to address the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) problem in hypernuclei systems with atomic number A = 4. The Λ binding energies are measured to be 2.22±0.06(stat.)±0.14(syst.) MeV and 2.38±0.13(stat.)±0.12(syst.) MeV for Λ4H and Λ4He, respectively. The measured Λ binding-energy difference is 0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV for ground states. Combined with the γ-ray transition energies, the binding-energy difference for excited states is −0.16±0.14(stat.)±0.10(syst.) MeV, which is negative and comparable to the value of the ground states within uncertainties. These new measurements on the Λ binding-energy difference in A = 4 hypernuclei systems are consistent with the theoretical calculations that result in ΔBΛ4(1exc+)≈−ΔBΛ4(0g.s.+)

Quark interactions with topological gluon configurations can induce local chirality imbalance and parity violation in quantum chromodynamics, which can lead to the chiral magnetic effect (CME) - an electric charge separation along the strong magnetic field in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The CME-sensitive azimuthal correlator observable (Δγ) is contaminated by background arising, in part, from resonance decays coupled with elliptic anisotropy (v2). We report here differential measurements of the correlator as a function of the pair invariant mass (minv) in 20-50% centrality Au+Au collisions at sNN=200 GeV by the STAR experiment at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. Strong resonance background contributions to Δγ are observed. At large minv where this background is significantly reduced, the Δγ value is found to be significantly smaller. An event-shape-engineering technique is deployed to determine the v2 background shape as a function of minv. We extract a v2-independent and minv-averaged signal Δγsig=(0.03±0.06±0.08)×10-4, or (2±4±5)% of the inclusive Δγ(minv>0.4 GeV/c2)=(1.58±0.02±0.02)×10-4, within pion pT=0.2-0.8 GeV/c and averaged over pseudorapidity ranges of -1

We report the first multi-differential measurements of strange hadrons of K−, ϕ and Ξ− yields as well as the ratios of ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− in Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV with the STAR experiment fixed target configuration at RHIC. The ϕ mesons and Ξ− hyperons are measured through hadronic decay channels, ϕ→K+K− and Ξ−→Λπ−. Collision centrality and rapidity dependence of the transverse momentum spectra for these strange hadrons are presented. The 4π yields and ratios are compared to thermal model and hadronic transport model predictions. At this collision energy, thermal model with grand canonical ensemble (GCE) under-predicts the ϕ/K− and ϕ/Ξ− ratios while the result of canonical ensemble (CE) calculations reproduce ϕ/K−, with the correlation length rc∼2.7 fm, and ϕ/Ξ−, rc∼4.2 fm, for the 0-10% central collisions. Hadronic transport models including high mass resonance decays could also describe the ratios. While thermal calculations with GCE work well for strangeness production in high energy collisions, the change to CE at 3 GeV implies a rather different medium property at high baryon density.

We present high-precision measurements of elliptic, triangular, and quadrangular flow v2, v3, and v4, respectively, at midrapidity for identified hadrons π, p, K, φ, Ks, Λ as a function of centrality and transverse momentum in Au+Au collisions at the center-of-mass energy sNN=200 GeV. We observe similar vn trends between light and strange mesons which indicates that the heavier strange quarks flow as strongly as the lighter up and down quarks. The number-of-constituent-quark scaling for v2, v3, and v4 is found to hold within statistical uncertainty for 0-10%, 10-40%, and 40-80% collision centrality intervals. The results are compared to several viscous hydrodynamic calculations with varying initial conditions, and could serve as an additional constraint to the development of hydrodynamic models.

We report cumulants of the proton multiplicity distribution from dedicated fixed-target Au+Au collisions at sqrt[s_{NN}]=3.0  GeV, measured by the STAR experiment in the kinematic acceptance of rapidity (y) and transverse momentum (p_{T}) within -0.5

We report measurements of the longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, ALL, for inclusive jet and dijet production in polarized proton-proton collisions at midrapidity and center-of-mass energy s=510 GeV, using the high luminosity data sample collected by the STAR experiment in 2013. These measurements complement and improve the precision of previous STAR measurements at the same center-of-mass energy that probe the polarized gluon distribution function at partonic momentum fraction 0.015≲x≲0.25. The dijet asymmetries are separated into four jet-pair topologies, which provide further constraints on the x dependence of the polarized gluon distribution function. These measurements are in agreement with previous STAR measurements and with predictions from current next-to-leading-order global analyses. They provide more precise data at low dijet invariant mass that will better constrain the shape of the polarized gluon distribution function of the proton.

In high-energy heavy-ion collisions, partonic collectivity is evidenced by the constituent quark number scaling of elliptic flow anisotropy for identified hadrons. A breaking of this scaling and dominance of baryonic interactions is found for identified hadron collective flow measurements in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions. In this paper, we report measurements of the first- and second-order azimuthal anisotropic parameters, v1 and v2, of light nuclei (d, t, 3He, 4He) produced in sNN = 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at the STAR experiment. An atomic mass number scaling is found in the measured v1 slopes of light nuclei at mid-rapidity. For the measured v2 magnitude, a strong rapidity dependence is observed. Unlike v2 at higher collision energies, the v2 values at mid-rapidity for all light nuclei are negative and no scaling is observed with the atomic mass number. Calculations by the Jet AA Microscopic Transport Model (JAM), with baryonic mean-field plus nucleon coalescence, are in good agreement with our observations, implying baryonic interactions dominate the collective dynamics in 3 GeV Au+Au collisions at RHIC.

We report on the measurements of directed flow v1 and elliptic flow v2 for hadrons (π±, K±, KS0, p, ϕ, Λ and Ξ−) from Au+Au collisions at sNN=3 GeV and v2 for (π±, K±, p and p‾) at 27 and 54.4 GeV with the STAR experiment. While at the two higher energy midcentral collisions the number-of-constituent-quark (NCQ) scaling holds, at 3 GeV the v2 at midrapidity is negative for all hadrons and the NCQ scaling is absent. In addition, the v1 slopes at midrapidity for almost all observed hadrons are found to be positive, implying dominant repulsive baryonic interactions. The features of negative v2 and positive v1 slope at 3 GeV can be reproduced with a baryonic mean-field in transport model calculations. These results imply that the medium in such collisions is likely characterized by baryonic interactions.

The STAR collaboration presents jet substructure measurements related to both the momentum fraction and the opening angle within jets in p+p and Au+Au collisions at sNN =200GeV. The substructure observables include SoftDrop groomed momentum fraction (zg), groomed jet radius (Rg), and subjet momentum fraction (zSJ) and opening angle (θSJ). The latter observable is introduced for the first time. Fully corrected subjet measurements are presented for p+p collisions and are compared to leading-order Monte Carlo models. The subjet θSJ distributions reflect the jets leading opening angle and are utilized as a proxy for the resolution scale of the medium in Au+Au collisions. We compare data from Au+Au collisions to those from p+p which are embedded in minimum-bias Au+Au events in order to include the effects of detector smearing and the heavy-ion collision underlying event. The subjet observables are shown to be more robust to the background than zg and Rg. We observe no significant modifications of the subjet observables within the two highest-energy, back-to-back jets, resulting in a distribution of opening angles and the splittings that are vacuumlike. We also report measurements of the differential dijet momentum imbalance (AJ) for jets of varying θSJ. We find no qualitative differences in energy loss signatures for varying angular scales in the range 0.1< θSJ

Understanding gluon density distributions and how they are modified in nuclei are among the most important goals in nuclear physics. In recent years, diffractive vector meson production measured in ultraperipheral collisions (UPCs) at heavy-ion colliders has provided a new tool for probing the gluon density. In this Letter, we report the first measurement of J/ψ photoproduction off the deuteron in UPCs at the center-of-mass energy sqrt[s_{NN}]=200  GeV in d+Au collisions. The differential cross section as a function of momentum transfer -t is measured. In addition, data with a neutron tagged in the deuteron-going zero-degree calorimeter is investigated for the first time, which is found to be consistent with the expectation of incoherent diffractive scattering at low momentum transfer. Theoretical predictions based on the color glass condensate saturation model and the leading twist approximation nuclear shadowing model are compared with the data quantitatively. A better agreement with the saturation model has been observed. With the current measurement, the results are found to be directly sensitive to the gluon density distribution of the deuteron and the deuteron breakup process, which provides insights into the nuclear gluonic structure.

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) refers to charge separation along a strong magnetic field due to imbalanced chirality of quarks in local parity and charge-parity violating domains in quantum chromodynamics. The experimental measurement of the charge separation is made difficult by the presence of a major background from elliptic azimuthal anisotropy. This background and the CME signal have different sensitivities to the spectator and participant planes, and could thus be determined by measurements with respect to these planes. We report such measurements in Au+Au collisions at a nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider. It is found that the charge separation, with the flow background removed, is consistent with zero in peripheral (large impact parameter) collisions. Some indication of finite CME signals is seen in midcentral (intermediate impact parameter) collisions. Significant residual background effects may, however, still be present.

Measurement by the STAR experiment at RHIC of the cold nuclear matter (CNM) effects experienced by inclusive J/ψ at mid-rapidity in 0-100% p+Au collisions at sNN = 200 GeV is presented. Such effects are quantified utilizing the nuclear modification factor, RpAu, obtained by taking a ratio of J/ψ yield in p+Au collisions to that in p+p collisions scaled by the number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions. The differential J/ψ yield in both p+p and p+Au collisions is measured through the dimuon decay channel, taking advantage of the trigger capability provided by the Muon Telescope Detector in the RHIC 2015 run. Consequently, the J/ψ RpAu is derived within the transverse momentum (pT) range of 0 to 10 GeV/c. A suppression of approximately 30% is observed for pT

The chiral magnetic effect (CME) is predicted to occur as a consequence of a local violation of P and CP symmetries of the strong interaction amidst a strong electromagnetic field generated in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Experimental manifestation of the CME involves a separation of positively and negatively charged hadrons along the direction of the magnetic field. Previous measurements of the CME-sensitive charge-separation observables remain inconclusive because of large background contributions. To better control the influence of signal and backgrounds, the STAR Collaboration performed a blind analysis of a large data sample of approximately 3.8 billion isobar collisions of Ru4496+Ru4496 and Zr4096+Zr4096 at sNN=200 GeV. Prior to the blind analysis, the CME signatures are predefined as a significant excess of the CME-sensitive observables in Ru+Ru collisions over those in Zr+Zr collisions, owing to a larger magnetic field in the former. A precision down to 0.4% is achieved, as anticipated, in the relative magnitudes of the pertinent observables between the two isobar systems. Observed differences in the multiplicity and flow harmonics at the matching centrality indicate that the magnitude of the CME background is different between the two species. No CME signature that satisfies the predefined criteria has been observed in isobar collisions in this blind analysis.

Global hyperon polarization, P¯H, in Au+Au collisions over a large range of collision energy, sNN, was recently measured and successfully reproduced by hydrodynamic and transport models with intense fluid vorticity of the quark-gluon plasma. While naïve extrapolation of data trends suggests a large P¯H as the collision energy is reduced, the behavior of P¯H at small sNN

We present the first inclusive measurements of the invariant and softdrop jet mass in proton-proton collisions at s=200 GeV at STAR. The measurements are fully corrected for detector effects, and reported differentially in both the jet transverse momentum and jet radius parameter. We compare the measurements to established leading-order Monte Carlo event generators and find that STAR-tuned pythia-6 reproduces the data, while LHC tunes of pythia-8 and herwig-7 do not agree with the data, providing further constraints on parameter tuning. Finally, we observe that softdrop grooming, for which the contribution of wide-angle nonperturbative radiation is suppressed, shifts the jet mass distributions into closer agreement with the partonic jet mass as determined by both pythia-8 and a next-to-leading-logarithmic accuracy perturbative QCD calculation. These measurements complement recent LHC measurements in a different kinematic region, as well as establish a baseline for future jet mass measurements in heavy-ion collisions at RHIC.

We report a systematic measurement of cumulants, Cn, for net-proton, proton, and antiproton multiplicity distributions, and correlation functions, κn, for proton and antiproton multiplicity distributions up to the fourth order in Au+Au collisions at sNN=7.7, 11.5, 14.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 54.4, 62.4, and 200 GeV. The Cn and κn are presented as a function of collision energy, centrality and kinematic acceptance in rapidity, y, and transverse momentum, pT. The data were taken during the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan (BES) program (2010-2017) at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) facility. The measurements are carried out at midrapidity (|y|< 0.5) and transverse momentum 0.4

The beam energy scan (BES) program at the BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC) was extended to energies below sNN=7.7 GeV in 2015 by successful implementation of the fixed-target mode of operation in the STAR (Solenoidal Tracker At RHIC) experiment. In this mode, ions circulate in one ring of the collider and interact with a stationary target at the entrance of the STAR time projection chamber. The first results for Au+Au collisions at sNN=4.5 GeV are presented, demonstrating good performance of all the relevant detector subsystems in fixed-target mode. Results presented here include directed and elliptic flow of identified hadrons, and radii from pion femtoscopy. The latter, together with recent HADES results, reveal a long-sought peak structure that may be caused by the system evolving through a first-order phase transition from quark-gluon plasma to the hadronic phase. Directed and elliptic flow for pions are presented for the first time at this beam energy. Pion and proton elliptic flow show behavior which hints at constituent quark scaling, and demonstrate that a definitive conclusion will be achievable using the full statistics of the ongoing second phase of BES (BES-II). In particular, BES-II to date has recorded fixed-target data sets with two orders of magnitude more events at each of nine energies between sNN=3.0 and 7.7 GeV.

Introduction. Juvenile polyposis syndrome is a rare autosomal dominant disorder in children characterized by multiple polyps in the gastrointestinal tract. A variety of clinical features manifest, including prolapse of a polyp or entire rectum, gastrointestinal bleeding, anaemia, and intussusception. This condition if left unmanaged promptly leads to fatal complications including the development of cancer of the bowel. Case Presentation. A 13-year-old girl with a history of mass protrusion per anus associated with bloody diarrhea. Colonoscopy showed multiple polyps in her large bowel. She underwent total colectomy with ileorectal anastomosis and did clinically well post surgery with no complications. Conclusion. Juvenile polyposis syndrome is an inherited condition with significant morbidity and a high risk of colon malignancy. It is important for early screening and diagnosis and hence management in its early stages as there are no specific standard guidelines for children.

Many studies have attempted to identify an infectious etiology for idiopathic facial palsy (Bell's palsy). Human herpesvirus 6 (HHV-6) has been associated with neurologic diseases and is thought to be a possible causative agent of Bell's palsy. In this study, we have tested the sera of 16 patients with Bell's palsy for the presence of HHV-6 DNA. Only 2 specimens yielded positive results by polymerase chain reaction. This data suggests that HHV-6 viremia is rare in Bell's palsy, making the etiologic role of this virus less likely. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dicyandiamide (DCD) reacted with amino acids 1a-f to produce biguanides 2 and 4 and guanidine pyrazolones 3, 5, 6, 7, and 8, according to the reaction. DCD exhibited the following reactions: imidodicarbonimidicdiamide 9, diazocan-2-ylguanidine 10, methyl biguanidylthion 11, N-carbamothioylimidodicarbonimidicdiamide 12, 2-guanidinebenzoimidazole 13a, 2-guanidinylbenzoxazole 13b, and 2-guanidinylbenzothiazol 13c. These reactions were triggered by 6-amino caproic acid, thioacetamide, thiourea, o-aminophenol, o-aminothiophenol, and anthranilic acid, respectively. Compound 2 had the least antimicrobial activity, while compound 13c demonstrated the most antibacterial impact against all bacterial strains. Furthermore, in terms of antiglycation efficacy (AGEs), 12, 11, and 7 were the most effective AGE cross-linking inhibitors. As of the 7 th of July 2024, 775,754,322 confirmed cases of COVID-19, including 7,053,902 deaths worldwide, had been reported to the WHO (World Health Organization). Nevertheless, untill the 15 th of July 2024, a total of 13,578,710,228 vaccine doses had been administered, with almost no country spared from COVID-19 attacks. The pathophysiology of this virus is complicated, and several symptoms require a deep understanding of the actual mechanisms. It is unclear why some patients develop severe symptoms while others do not, although literature suggests a role for vitamin D. Vitamin D plays a crucial role in the infection or in ameliorating the severity of symptoms. The mechanism of action of vitamin D and vitamin D deficiency (VDD) is well understood. VDD is associated with increased hospitalization of severely ill patients and increased levels of COVID-19-caused mortality. Recent studies suggest that vitamin D levels and genetic variations in the vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene significantly impact the severity and outcomes of COVID-19, especially in the infections caused by Delta and Omicron variants. Furthermore, VDD causes immune system dysregulation upon infection with SARS-CoV-2, indicating that vitamin D sufficiency is crucial in fighting against COVID-19 infection. The therapeutic effect of vitamin D raises interest in its potential role as a prophylactic and treatment adjunct. We evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of vitamin D and its ability to enhance the efficacy of new antiviral drugs like molnupiravir and paxlovid against SARS-CoV-2. This review discusses the role of vitamin D sufficiency and VDD in COVID-19 initiation and progression, emphasizing the molecular mechanisms by which vitamin D exerts its actions as a proactive step for the next pandemic. However, there is still no clear evidence of vitamin D's impact on prevention and treatment, leading to contradictory findings. Therefore, large-scale randomized trials are required to reach a definitive conclusion. Background: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) has been identified as one of the top ten public health threats facing humanity. Aim: The purpose of this study was to assess the effect of an antimicrobial stewardship educational intervention on family caregivers' knowledge and practices in primary healthcare settings in Egypt. Methods: A quasi-experimental, one-group pretest-posttest design involving a sample of 300 family caregivers attending family health centers. The data were collected using questionnaires that assessed caregiver knowledge and self-reported practices regarding AMR before and after the intervention (primary outcomes). The intervention combined tailored knowledge and practice components that carefully evaluated participants' knowledge regarding AMR, health risk, antibiotic usage, and prevention of infection. Furthermore, their practice of using antibiotics, including previous antibiotic exposure, their antibiotic use during the past year, reasons for taking antibiotics, ways of obtaining antibiotics, and reasons for discontinuing of antibiotic therapy were also recorded. Results: The pre-intervention assessment revealed poor knowledge and practice regarding antibiotic use. Post-intervention, mean knowledge scores increased significantly from 18.36 to 23.28 (t = 19.5, p < 0.0001), while mean practice scores improved from 9.83 to 12.37 (t = 6.4, p < 0.0001). Conclusions: The intervention successfully improved caregivers' knowledge and practices regarding AMR. However, there are some limitations that could affect the generalization, and the impact of the results such as the relatively small sample size recruited from a single center, lack of a control group, reliance on self-reported data, and lack of long-term follow-up. Future studies should aim to address these constraints in order to assess the intervention's effectiveness.

Background: Despite global efforts, inequities in vaccine uptake remain, influenced by socioeconomic, geographic, cultural, and gender-related factors. In Eastern Sudan, gender disparities are acknowledged, particularly in livelihoods, but their impact on vaccination uptake is unclear. This study aimed to assess the effect of gender-biased parental perceptions on under-immunization among children in Kassala, Eastern Sudan., Methods: This study was a community-based cross-sectional in rural and urban districts of Kassala locality in Kassala State, Eastern Sudan in November 2022. Data were collected from parents using a pre-tested, structured questionnaire. The Chi-square or Fisher's exact test was conducted to assess the factors associated with under-immunization among children., Results: Data were collected from 400 parents. Our data reveal that most children were fully vaccinated with the three doses of the pentavalent vaccine (83%), while 14% were partially vaccinated. Findings showed that about one in five parents perceived male vaccination as more important than female vaccination. This parental perception of gender-based importance in vaccination was significantly associated with under-immunization among children ( p -value = 0.049). Additionally, males in our study are fully vaccinated 5% more often than females. Socio-economic factors, including mothers' education and households' income level, were also significantly associated with the vaccination status of the children., Conclusion: This study shed light on the effect of gender norms and related determinants on equitable access to vaccinations for boys and girls alike. Genetic disorders affect over 6% of the global population and pose substantial obstacles to healthcare systems. Early identification of these rare facial genetic disorders is essential for managing related medical complexities and health issues. Many people consider the existing screening techniques inadequate, often leading to a diagnosis several years after birth. This study evaluated the efficacy of deep learning-based classifier models for accurately recognizing dysmorphic characteristics using facial photos. This study proposes a multi-class facial syndrome classification framework that encompasses a unique combination of diseases not previously examined together. The study focused on distinguishing between individuals with four specific genetic disorders (Down syndrome, Noonan syndrome, Turner syndrome, and Williams syndrome) and healthy controls. We investigated how well fine-tuning a few well-known convolutional neural network (CNN)-based pre-trained models-including VGG16, ResNet-50, ResNet152, and VGG-Face-worked for the multi-class facial syndrome classification task. We obtained the most encouraging results by adjusting the VGG-Face model. The proposed fine-tuned VGG-Face model not only demonstrated the best performance in this study, but it also performed better than other state-of-the-art pre-trained CNN models for the multi-class facial syndrome classification task. The fine-tuned model achieved both accuracy and an F1-Score of 90%, indicating significant progress in accurately detecting the specified genetic disorders.

This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms and the neuroprotective effect of hyaluronic acid modified verapamil-loaded carbon quantum dots (VRH-loaded HA-CQDs) against an in-vitro Alzheimer's disease model induced by amyloid beta (Aβ) in SH-SY5Y and Neuro 2a neuroblastoma cells. Briefly, different HA-CQDs were prepared using hydrothermal method and optimized by Box-Behnken design to maximize quantum yield and minimize particle size. Serum stable negatively charged VRH-loaded HA-CQDs was successfully prepared by admixing the optimized HA-CQDs and VRH with association efficiency and loading capacity of 81.25 ± 3.65 % and 5.11 ± 0.81 %, respectively. Cells were pretreated with VRH solution or loaded-HA-CQDs followed by exposure to Aβ. Compared to the control group, amyloidosis led to reduction in cellular proliferation, mitochondrial membrane potential, expression of cytochrome P450, cytochrome c oxidase, CREB-regulated transcriptional coactivator 3, and mitotic index, along with marked increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammatory cytokines. Pretreatment with VRH, either free or loaded HA-CQDs, enhanced cell survival, mitochondrial membrane potential, mitotic index, and gene expression. It also reduced inflammation and ROS. However, VRH-loaded HA-CQDs exhibited superior effectiveness in the measured parameters. Background: Parkinson's disease (PD) is a neurological condition that typically shows up with aging. It is characterized by generalized slowness of movement, resting tremor or stiffness, and bradykinesia. PD patients' brains mostly exhibit an increase in inflammatory mediators and microglial response. Nevertheless, a variety of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications (NSAIDS) offered neuroprotection in animal models and preclinical trials. Aim: The current systematic review and meta-analysis were designed to try to resolve the debate over the association of NSAID use with the development of PD because the results of several studies were somehow contradictory. Methods: An intense search was performed on Scopus, PubMed, and Web of Science databases for articles relating the incidence of PD to the use of NSAIDs. Statistical analysis of the included studies was carried out using Review Manager version 5.4.1 by random effect model. The outcome was identified as the development of PD in patients who were on NSAIDs, ibuprofen only, aspirin only, and non-aspirin NSAIDs. This was analyzed using pooled analysis of odds ratio (OR) at a significance level of ≤0.05 and a confidence level of 95%. A statistically significant decreased risk of PD was observed in patients taking NSAIDs, Ibuprofen, and non-aspirin NSAIDs. Results: The ORs of PD occurrence in patients who took NSAIDs, Ibuprofen, and non-aspirin NSAIDs were 0.88 [95% CI (0.8-0.97), p = 0.01], 0.73 [95% CI (0.53-1), p = 0.05] and 0.85 [95% CI (0.75-0.97), p = 0.01]. Meanwhile, the risk of PD in patients who took aspirin was not statistically significant. Conclusion: In conclusion, Ibuprofen, non-aspirin NSAIDs, and other types of NSAIDs could be associated with a reduction in PD risk. Breast cancer detection at an early stage is crucial for improving patient survival rates. This work introduces an innovative thermal imaging prototype that incorporates compression techniques inspired by mammography equipment. The prototype offers a radiation-free and precise cancer diagnosis. By integrating compression and illumination methods, thermal picture quality has increased, and the accuracy of classification has improved. Essential components of the suggested thermography device include an equipment body, plates, motors, pressure sensors, light sources, and a thermal camera. We created a 3D model of the gadget using the SolidWorks software 2020 package. Furthermore, the classification research employed both cancer and normal images from the experimental results to validate the efficacy of the suggested system. We employed preprocessing and segmentation methods on the obtained dataset. We successfully categorized the thermal pictures using various classifiers and examined their performance. The logistic regression model showed excellent performance, achieving an accuracy of 0.976, F1 score of 0.977, precision of 1.000, and recall of 0.995. This indicates a high level of accuracy in correctly classifying thermal abnormalities associated with breast cancer. The proposed prototype serves as a highly effective tool for conducting initial investigations into breast cancer detection, offering potential advancements in early-stage diagnosis, and improving patient survival rates.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disease that badly impacts patients and their caregivers. AD is characterized by deposition of amyloid beta (Aβ) and phosphorylated tau protein (pTau) in the brain with underlying neuroinflammation. We aimed to develop a neuroprotective paradigm by loading verapamil (VRH) into hyaluronic acid-modified carbon quantum dots (CQDs) and comparing its effectiveness with the free form in an AD-like model in rats induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). The experimental rats were divided into seven groups: control, LPS, CQDs, early free VRH (FVRH), late FVRH, early verapamil carbon quantum dots (VCQDs), and late VCQDs. Characterizations of VCQDs, the behavioral performance of the rats, histopathological and immunohistochemical changes, some AD hallmarks, oxidative stress biomarkers, neuro-affecting genes, and DNA fragmentation were determined. VRH was successfully loaded into CQDs, which was confirmed by the measured parameters. VRH showed enhancement in cognitive functions, disruption to the architecture of the brain, decreased Aβ and pTau, increased antioxidant capacity, modifiable expression of genes, and a decline in DNA fragmentation. The loaded therapy was superior to the free drug. Moreover, the early intervention was better than the late, confirming the implication of the detected molecular targets in the development of AD. VRH showed multifaceted mechanisms in combating LPS-induced neurotoxicity through its anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, thereby mitigating the hallmarks of AD. Additionally, the synthesized nanosystem approach exhibited superior neuroprotection owing to the advantages offered by CQDs. However, finding new actionable biomarkers and molecular targets is of decisive importance to improve the outcomes for patients with AD.

Background: Neuroinflammation pathways have been associated with the development of major depressive disorders (MDD). The anti-inflammatory characteristics of statins have been demonstrated to have significance in the pathophysiology of depression., Aim: To investigate the mechanistic pathways of high dose atorvastatin in MDD., Patients and Methods: This trial included 60 patients with MDD who met the eligibility requirements. Two groups of patients (n = 30) were recruited by selecting patients from the Psychiatry Department. Group 1 received 20 mg of fluoxetine plus a placebo once daily. Group 2 received fluoxetine and atorvastatin (80 mg) once daily. All patients were assessed by a psychiatrist using the Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HDRS). A HDRS score of ≤7 indicates remission or partial remission [HDRS<17 and>7]. Response was defined as ≥ 50% drop in the HDRS score. The serum concentrations of nucleotide-binding domain, leucine-rich-containing family, pyrin domain-containing-3 (NLRP-3), interleukin-6 (IL-6), adenosine monophosphate activated protein kinase (AMPK), and signal transducer and activator of transcription factor-3 (STAT-3) were measured., Results: The atorvastatin group showed a significant reduction in the levels of all measured markers along with a statistical increase in the levels of AMPK when compared to the fluoxetine group. The atorvastatin group displayed a significant decrease in HDRS when compared to its baseline and the fluoxetine group. Neurological injury is a crucial problem that interferes with the therapeutic use of vinca alkaloids as well as the quality of patient life. This study was conducted to assess the impact of using loratadine or diosmin/hesperidin on neuropathy induced by vinca alkaloids. Patients were randomized into one of three groups as follows: group 1 was the control group, group 2 received 450 mg diosmin and 50 mg hesperidin combination orally twice daily, and group 3 received loratadine 10 mg orally once daily. Subjective scores (numeric pain rating scale, douleur neuropathique 4, and functional assessment of cancer therapy/gynecologic oncology group-neurotoxicity (FACT/GOG-Ntx) scores), neuroinflammation biomarkers, adverse drug effects, quality of life, and response to chemotherapy were compared among the three groups. Both diosmin/hesperidin and loratadine improved the results of the neurotoxicity subscale in the FACT/GOG-Ntx score ( p < 0.001, p < 0.01 respectively) and ameliorated the upsurge in neuroinflammation serum biomarkers. They also reduced the incidence and timing of paresthesia ( p = 0.001 and p < 0.001, respectively) and dysuria occurrence ( p = 0.042). Both loratadine and diosmin/hesperidin attenuated the intensity of acute neuropathy triggered by vinca alkaloids. Furthermore, they did not increase the frequency of adverse effects or interfere with the treatment response.

Ribonucleic acids (RNAs) are important regulators of gene expression and crucial for the progression of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). This study was designed to determine the diagnostic and prognostic utility of the circulating long miscellaneous RNAs; LINC01419, AK021443, and AF070632 in HCV-related HCC patients. Real-time PCR was used to measure their relative expression levels in the plasma of 194 HCV patients, 120 HCV-related HCC patients and 120 healthy controls. LINC01419 and AK021443 expression levels had significantly increasing linear trend estimates while AF070632 was dramatically downregulated in HCC compared to HCV. Interestingly, LINC01419 and AK021443 served as more significant diagnostic biomarkers for HCC than AF070632 and AFP. Multivariate analysis with cox regression revealed that the high expression of AK021443 [HR = 10.06, CI95%: 3.36-30.07], the high expression of LINC01419 [HR 4.13, CI95%: 1.32-12.86], and the low expression of AF070632 [HR = 2.70, CI95%: 1.07-6.81] were significant potential prognostic factors for HCC. Besides, the Kaplan-Meier analysis showed that HCC patients with high LIN01419 and AK021443 and low AF070632 expression levels had shorter OS. The circulating LINC01419 and AK021443 can be used as noninvasive potential biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis of HCV-related HCC patients than AF070632 providing new targets for limiting the progression of the disease.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder without effective treatment. Thymoquinone (TQ) has demonstrated potential in exhibiting anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, and antioxidant characteristics. Despite TQ's neuroprotection effect, there is a scarcity of information regarding its application in AD research, and its molecular trajectories remain ambiguous. Thus, the objective of the current investigation was to examine the potential beneficial effects and underlying mechanisms of TQ in scopolamine (SCOP)-induced neuronal injury to mimic AD in vivo model., Methods: Thirty mice were divided into normal, SCOP, and TQ groups. The Y-maze and pole climbing tests were performed to measure memory and motor performance. Afterwards, histopathological and immunohistochemical examinations were carried out. Furthermore, peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) signaling pathway-related proteins and genes were detected with an emphasis on the role of miR-9., Results: TQ has the potential to ameliorate cognitive deficits observed in SCOP-induced AD-like model, as evidenced by the improvement in behavioral outcomes, histopathological changes, modulation of the expression pattern of PPAR-γ downstream targets with a significant decrease in the deposition of amyloid beta (Aβ)., Conclusions: TQ provided meaningful multilevel neuroprotection through its anti-inflammatory and its PPAR-γ agonist activity. Consequently, TQ may possess a potential beneficial role against AD development.

Over the past several years, many children have died from suffocation due to being left inside a closed vehicle on a sunny day. Various vehicle manufacturers have proposed a variety of technologies to locate an unattended child in a vehicle, including pressure sensors, passive infrared motion sensors, temperature sensors, and microwave sensors. However, these methods have not yet reliably located forgotten children in the vehicle. Recently, visual-based methods have taken the attention of manufacturers after the emergence of deep learning technology. However, the existing methods focus only on the forgotten child and neglect a forgotten pet. Furthermore, their systems only detect the presence of a child in the car with or without their parents. Therefore, this research introduces a visual-based framework to reduce hyperthermia deaths in enclosed vehicles. This visual-based system detects objects inside a vehicle; if the child or pet are without an adult, a notification is sent to the parents. First, a dataset is constructed for vehicle interiors containing children, pets, and adults. The proposed dataset is collected from different online sources, considering varying illumination, skin color, pet type, clothes, and car brands for guaranteed model robustness. Second, blurring, sharpening, brightness, contrast, noise, perspective transform, and fog effect augmentation algorithms are applied to these images to increase the training data. The augmented images are annotated with three classes: child, pet, and adult. This research concentrates on fine-tuning different state-of-the-art real-time detection models to detect objects inside the vehicle: NanoDet, YOLOv6&#95;1, YOLOv6&#95;3, and YOLO7. The simulation results demonstrate that YOLOv6&#95;1 presents significant values with 96% recall, 95% precision, and 95% F1.

Receiver operating characteristic is a beneficial technique for evaluating the performance of a binary classification. The area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic is an effective index of the accuracy of the classification process. While nonparametric point estimation has been well-studied under the ranked set sampling, it has received little attention under ranked set sampling variations. In order to set out to fill this gap, this article deals with the problem of estimating the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic based on paired ranked set sampling. New estimators of the area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic based on paired ranked set sampling are proposed. Using the information supported by the concomitant variable, the additional area under the curve of the receiver operating characteristic estimators based on ranked set sampling as well as paired ranked set sampling are also introduced. It is shown either theoretically or numerically that the proposed estimators are consistent under the perfectness situation. It emerges that the concomitant-based estimators are shown to be superior to their competitors provided that the perfect assumption is not sharply violated. In contrast, kernel-based estimators are significantly superior relative to their rivals regardless of the quality of ranking. Finally, the application of the proposed procedures is also demonstrated by using empirical datasets in the context of medicine.

Objectives: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is one of the top causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. The review aimed to discuss and summarize the current evidence on the effectiveness of adjuvant neuroprotective treatments in terms of their effect on brain injury biomarkers in TBI patients. Methods: To identify relevant studies, four scholarly databases, including PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, and Google Scholar, were systematically searched using predefined search terms. English-language randomized controlled clinical trials reporting changes in brain injury biomarkers, namely, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), glial fibrillary acid protein (GFAP), ubiquitin carboxyl-terminal esterase L1 (UCHL 1 ) and/or S100 beta (S100 ß), were included. The methodological quality of the included studies was assessed using the Cochrane risk-of-bias tool. Results: A total of eleven studies with eight different therapeutic options were investigated; of them, tetracyclines, metformin, and memantine were discovered to be promising choices that could improve neurological outcomes in TBI patients. The most utilized serum biomarkers were NSE and S100 ß followed by GFAP, while none of the included studies quantified UCHL 1 . The heterogeneity in injury severity categories and measurement timing may affect the overall evaluation of the clinical efficacy of potential therapies. Therefore, unified measurement protocols are highly warranted to inform clinical decisions. Conclusion: Few therapeutic options showed promising results as an adjuvant to standard care in patients with TBI. Several considerations for future work must be directed towards standardizing monitoring biomarkers. Investigating the pharmacotherapy effectiveness using a multimodal biomarker panel is needed. Finally, employing stratified randomization in future clinical trials concerning potential confounders, including age, trauma severity levels, and type, is crucial to inform clinical decisions. Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is common with obesity. Metformin is a first-line therapy for this condition. However, it has only a minor impact on weight loss in some patients. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, tolerability, and safety of combining montelukast therapy with metformin in obese diabetic patients. Methods: One hundred obese diabetic adult patients were recruited and randomized into two equal groups. Group 1 received placebo plus metformin 2 g/d, and Group 2 received 2 g/d metformin plus 10 mg/d montelukast. Demographic, anthropometric measurements (e.g., body weight, body mass index [BMI], and visceral adiposity index), lipid profile, diabetes control measures (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin [HbA1c], and homeostatic model assessment for insulin resistance [HOMA-IR]), adiponectin, and inflammatory markers (e.g., TNF-α, IL-6, and leukotriene B4) were assessed and reported for each group at baseline and after 12 weeks of treatment. Results: Both interventions significantly reduced all the measured parameters, except for adiponectin and HDL-C, levels of which increased compared to baseline data ( p < 0.001). The montelukast group significantly improved in all parameters compared to the placebo group (ANCOVA test p < 0.001). The percentage changes in BMI, HbA1c, HOMA-IR, and inflammatory markers were 5%, 9%, 41%, and 5%-30%, respectively, in the placebo group compared to 8%, 16%, 58%, and 50%-70%, respectively, in the montelukast group. Conclusion: Montelukast adjuvant therapy was superior to metformin-only therapy in diabetes control and weight loss, most likely due to its increased insulin sensitivity and anti-inflammatory properties. The combination was tolerable and safe throughout the study duration. During the last decade, surveillance cameras have spread quickly; their spread is predicted to increase rapidly in the following years. Therefore, browsing and analyzing these vast amounts of created surveillance videos effectively is vital in surveillance applications. Recently, a video synopsis approach was proposed to reduce the surveillance video duration by rearranging the objects to present them in a portion of time. However, performing a synopsis for all the persons in the video is not efficacious for crowded videos. Different clustering and user-defined query methods are introduced to generate the video synopsis according to general descriptions such as color, size, class, and motion. This work presents a user-defined query synopsis video based on motion descriptions and specific visual appearance features such as gender, age, carrying something, having a baby buggy, and upper and lower clothing color. The proposed method assists the camera monitor in retrieving people who meet certain appearance constraints and people who enter a predefined area or move in a specific direction to generate the video, including a suspected person with specific features. After retrieving the persons, a whale optimization algorithm is applied to arrange these persons reserving chronological order, reducing collisions, and assuring a short synopsis video. The evaluation of the proposed work for the retrieval process in terms of precision, recall, and F1 score ranges from 83% to 100%, while for the video synopsis process, the synopsis video length compared to the original video is decreased by 68% to 93.2%, and the interacting tube pairs are preserved in the synopsis video by 78.6% to 100%.
