Aims: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID‐19) pandemic has resulted in more than 6 million deaths worldwide. Studies on the impact of obesity on patients hospitalized with COVID‐19 pneumonia have been conflicting, with some studies describing worse outcomes in patients with obesity, while other studies reporting no difference in outcomes. Previous studies on obesity and critical illness have described improved outcomes in patients with obesity, termed the "obesity paradox." The study assessed the impact of obesity on the outcomes of COVID‐19 hospitalizations, using a nationally representative database. Materials and Methods: ICD‐10 code U071 was used to identify all hospitalizations with the principal diagnosis of COVID‐19 infection in the National Inpatient Database 2020. ICD‐10 codes were used to identify outcomes and comorbidities. Hospitalizations were grouped based on body mass index (BMI). Multivariable logistic regression was used to adjust for demographic characteristics and comorbidities. Results: A total of 56,033 hospitalizations were identified. 48% were male, 49% were white and 22% were black. Patients hospitalized with COVID‐19 pneumonia in the setting of obesity and clinically severe obesity were often younger. Adjusted for differences in comorbidities, there was a significant increase in mortality, incidence of mechanical ventilation, shock, and sepsis with increased BMI. The mortality was highest among hospitalizations with BMI ≥60, with an adjusted odds ratio of 2.66 (95% Confidence interval 2.18–3.24) compared to hospitalizations with normal BMI. There were increased odds of mechanical ventilation across all BMI groups above normal, with the odds of mechanical ventilation increasing with increasing BMI. Conclusion: The results show that obesity is independently associated with worse patient outcomes in COVID‐19 hospitalizations and is associated with higher in‐patient mortality and higher rates of mechanical ventilation. The aim of this study was to evaluate the protective effects of Ginkgo biloba (GB) against testicular damage and oxidative stress as well as caudal sperm indices in a cisplatin- (CIS-) induced rodent model. Adult maleWistar rats were given vehicle, single i.p. dose of CIS alone (10mg/kg), GB alone (200 mg g/kg every day for five days), or single dose of CIS followed by GB (50, 100, or 200 mg/kg every day for five days). On day 6, after the first drug treatment oxidative and apoptotic testicular toxicity was evaluated. CIS-treated rats displayed decreased weights of testes and epididymis as well as caudal spermcount andmotility. This reproductive toxicity was accompanied with increased germ-cell degeneration in seminiferous tubules and increased germ-cell apoptosis, increased testicular MDA levels and MPO activity, and decreased SOD and CAT activities in testes. Intensive expressions of COX-2, iNOS, and NF-κ?B p65 in testicular tissues were detected in CIS-treated group. Oral GB administrations at all doses to CIS-treated rats effectively alleviated all of the CIS-induced toxicity in reproductive system. The present results provide further insights into the mechanisms of protection against CIS-induced reproductive toxicity and confirm the essential antioxidant potential of a GB extract. Trachoma is targeted for global elimination as a public health problem by 2030. Measurement of IgG antibodies in children is being considered for surveillance and programmatic decision-making. There are currently no guidelines for applications of serology, which represents a generalizable problem in seroepidemiology and disease elimination. We collated Chlamydia trachomatis Pgp3 and CT694 IgG measurements (63,911 children ages 1-9 years) from 48 serosurveys, including surveys across Africa, Latin America, and the Pacific Islands to estimate population-level seroconversion rates (SCR) along a gradient of trachoma endemicity. We propose a novel, generalizable approach to estimate the probability that population C. trachomatis transmission is below levels requiring ongoing programmatic action, or conversely is above levels that indicate ongoing interventions are needed.
