6. Knowledge, attitude and behaviour of undergraduate medical students towards mentally Ill patients-Suez Canal University, Egypt

Abstract

Background: Worldwide, studies show negative attitudes among medical students toward psychiatry and mental illness. The knowledge of the attitude and awareness of the undergraduate medical students toward mental health and psychiatric disorders are most important as they are going to be involved in the care of these patients either directly or indirectly during the years of their careers. Aim: To explore, the knowledge, attitude, and behavior of undergraduate medical students towards mentally ill Patients before their planned psychiatry rotation in the fourth year of undergraduate medical study, faculty of medicine, Suez Canal University, Ismailia, Egypt. Objectives: To assess mental health-related knowledge, attitudes and intended behavior of undergraduate medical students towards mentally ill patients. Subjects and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study, conducted on 120 fourth-year undergraduate medical students affiliated with the faculty of medicine-Suez Canal University. A comprehensive sample was used to include all of the students in the fourth year of undergraduate medical study, and the study group participants completed a semi-structured questionnaire including four parts to assess their knowledge, attitudes, and behavioral responses towards individuals with mental illnesses. The data of the study was collected in September-October 2019. Results: Based on the participants’ scores, the cut-off points estimated to dichotomize the responses as poor or good, for mental health-related knowledge, belief towards mental illness and intended behavior were, 17, 55 and 8.5 respectively. This study showed that the study participants had marginally poor mental health-related knowledge with a median score of 17, poor beliefs about mental illness with a median score of 49.5 and poor intended behavior towards the mentally ill with a median score of 7. Conclusion: In this study, undergraduate medical students showed marginally poor mental health-related knowledge, poor stigmatizing beliefs, and behavior towards mentally ill patients. More controlled studies are needed to eliminate the inherent response biases in survey studies and to measure the outcomes of anti-stigma educational and curricular interventions.

Abstract

Prostate specific antigen is a glycoprotein that liquefy the semen normally. It suppose to be in a very low level abnormally and increase in cases of infection of the prostrate, hyperplasia and tumor. Due to increase and decrease in many other cases not only a tumor and due to high percent of existence in many normal fluids and many other tumor, it somewhat reduce its specifity and sensitivity and so it supported by other test. Aim: it to predict whether that tumor marker is sufficient to the diagnosis of the prostate tumor. Nowadays it had been seen that this tumor marker is secreted from many other fluid beside the prostate gland and found in many other tumor beside the prostate tumor and so it is better to be supported by many other assessments and clinical and histological steps for making a definite decision. Abstract

REP typing system for Serratia marcescens supply probability for effective monitoring for the epidemiological inclusion of this potentially opportunistic pathogen. The aim of this study was conducted to compare rep-PCR and antibiogramtyping for the typing of Serratia marcescens in a number of hospitals in Baghdad, Iraq. All isolates underwent an antibiotic sensitivity test to assess their multiple antibiotic resistances. Then the isolates were typing according to the values of the inhibition zone around antibiotic discs called antibiogram-typing, and then compared to the genotyping method called rep-PCR. All the Serratia marcescens isolates were non Prodigiosin producer, which reflect the pathogenic behavior of these isolates. Multiple resistances to more than one antibiotic were noticed, these results pointed to dangerous truth that common antibiotics used loss, it is activity against S. marcescens bacteria and that need to a review of the treatment strategies. In this study, repPCR demonstrated a higher discriminatory power than Antibiogram typing in analyzing S. marcesance. These results indicated the S. marcescens isolates prevalence in Baghdad hospital was sharing the same genetic material, which reflects there are distributions from the same clone. Abstract

Purpose: To determine if a foam septum protector prevents nasal injury in preterm infants receiving nasal heated humidified oxygen. Design: A retrospective before and after comparative design was used. Sample: Medical records of 101 preterm infants receiving either nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive pressure ventilation (NIPPV) were reviewed; 50 were in the control group and 51 were in the intervention group that had the NeoSeal septum protector applied. The groups were not different in terms of gender, birth weight, gestational age, days intubated, or on days on NCPAP/NIPPV. Skin condition of nares was scored daily using the Neonatal Skin Risk Assessment Scale (NSRAS). Results: Infants who had the NeoSeal applied had significantly less nasal injuries, OR = 4.08; 95% confidence interval (Cl), 1.22-9.59; p = .01.
