Groundwater is the primary water source for irrigating and drinking in dry seasons. This work was examined to assess groundwater potential area underlain by basement complex with GIS based approach of selected locations in Osogbo. The soil samples were taken and soil textural and permeability analyses were done in the laboratory. Supervised classification analysis was done on LandSAT imagery to generate Land use and a lineament map, surface analyst algorithm was applied on ASTER dam to generate elevation map. Hydraulic conductivity and overburden thickness maps were generated from the Borehole data parameters. Interpolation method was used to generate spatially spread clay, silt, sand, rainfall and hydraulic conductivity. Multi-criteria analysis was used to generate groundwater potential zone map in the study area. Specific factors were considered for groundwater potential zone. Reclassification was done on each of the considered factors and AHP model was used to assign weight to all the factors. The results of the various factors responsible for groundwater potential include lineament density 0-0.0028; sand 67.2-89.60%, silt 9.00-30.00%, clay 0.17-2.80%, permeability 0.000010-0.00002, rainfall 1304.02-1469.06mm/yr, hydraulic conductivity 0.21-0.96m/min, land use consisting of degraded forest 48.65%, riparian forest 13.05%, built up 38.29%, and water body 0.001%. However, ground water potential of the study area was assessed and classified into fair, good and very good with the coverage of 2%, 80% and 18% respectively. Conclusively, the groundwater recharge potential is very good at Ofatedo, Gbonmi and Oke-Oro locations, good at Awosuru, Gbodofon and Dagbolu locations, but fair at Mallam Tope location in Osogbo

Background & objectives: Sandflies are important carriers of Leishmania parasites. Leishmaniasis, spread by sandfly vectors, is a major public health problem worldwide particularly in the tropics and the subtropics. The parasite transmission capacity of vectors, life cycle of parasites in the body of vectors, disease transmission, and the physiology and behavior of carrier vectors can be extensively studied by establishing insect colonies in the insectarium. In addition, response of vectors to repellents and insecticides, mating behaviors, blood feeding habits, interaction between parasites, and vectors, and taxonomic studies can be investigated by establishing insect colonies. The goal of the present study was to establish a colony of Phlebotomus papatasi in the insectarium in a zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis endemic area in Kerman Province of Iran. Methods: The Killick-Kendrick and Killick-Kendrick method (1991) was used for individual rearing and the volf and volfa (2011) method was used for mass rearing of the collected sandflies. The larvae were fed by a diet with liver powder, which is the recommended diet for Phlebotomus papatasi larvae. Adult sandflies were allowed to feed on BALB/c mice blood in the laboratory. Results: Eighty sandflies specimens (75 female + 5 male) were collected with aspirator and reared for f1 and f2 generations in the laboratory. Interpretation & conclusion: Phlebotomus sandflies were colonized in laboratory condition. Then sandflies successfully maintained for the first time as a laboratory species in Kerman Province.

Background: Cardiovascular disease is a leading cause of illness and death globally, primarily due to atherosclerosis. This disease reduces blood flow and oxygen delivery to organs, and when it affects the carotid arteries, it can lead to cognitive impairment and dementia. In a population of 104 individuals, comprising both healthy controls and individuals at elevated risk for developing cardiovascular diseases (CVD) due to identified risk factors, we used PET imaging with 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to assess cerebral glucose metabolism and 18F-sodium fluoride (NaF) to detect atherosclerotic calcification. Our statistical analysis revealed significant differences in metabolic activity between healthy and at-risk individuals in specific brain regions. 18F-FDG uptake in the brain varied inversely with respect to the clinical assessment of cardiovascular risk in regions such as the cuneus (β = −0.030, SE = 0.014, p = 0.035), middle occipital gyrus (β = −0.032, SE = 0.011, p = 0.005), and posterior cingulate gyrus (β = −0.032, SE = 0.015, p = 0.044). In contrast, areas including the basis pontis (β = 0.025, SE = 0.012, p = 0.038) and the pons (β = 0.034, SE = 0.013, p = 0.008) exhibited direct correlations. Notably, carotid 18F-NaF uptake had inverse associations with 18F-FDG uptake in the cerebellum (β = −0.825, SE = 0.354, p = 0.021), medulla (β = −0.888, SE = 0.405, p = 0.029), and posterior cingulate gyrus (β = −1.253, SE = 0.567, p = 0.028), while increased carotid calcification influenced metabolic activity in the fusiform gyrus (β = 1.660, SE = 0.498, p = 0.001) and globus pallidus (β = 1.505, SE = 0.571, p = 0.009). We observed that atherosclerotic plaque accumulation, especially in the carotid arteries, has potential implications for metabolic changes in brain regions governing cognition, emotion, sensory perception, and motor activities. Our findings underscore the possible early interventions that can be used to preempt or delay cognitive deterioration linked with cardiovascular ailments.

Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH) is a complex disorder characterized by the clonal proliferation of Langerhans cells, primarily affecting children and adolescents. This condition exhibits a wide spectrum of clinical presentations, necessitating a multidisciplinary approach for diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up. Cutaneous manifestations of LCH are significant, mimicking common dermatoses and posing diagnostic challenges. [18F]Fluorodeoxyglucose-Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET) has emerged as an important tool in the evaluation of pediatric LCH, offering insights into disease activity, extent, and therapeutic response. Moreover, FDG-PET provides a non-invasive means to distinguish between active LCH skin lesions and other dermatological conditions with similar clinical appearances, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and aiding in disease monitoring. This educational review summarizes the utility of nuclear imaging techniques, with a focus on PET scans, in the diagnosis and management of cutaneous pediatric LCH. A comprehensive literature search identified seven relevant articles, including retrospective studies and case reports. These studies highlight the efficacy of FDG-PET in localizing active LCH skin lesions, monitoring disease activity, and guiding treatment decisions. FDG-PET represents a valuable imaging modality for dermatologists, oncologists, and pediatricians managing pediatric LCH patients with cutaneous involvement. This non-invasive technique contributes to improved diagnostic accuracy and facilitates early intervention, ultimately enhancing patient care and outcomes.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination has become the most effective countermeasure in the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) pandemic. However, vaccination is associated with side effects. This narrative review focuses on central nervous system (CNS) manifestations following COVID-19 vaccination and provides a summary of the potential underlying mechanisms and methods of diagnosis and management of the vaccination-related CNS manifestations. Headache, myalgia, optic neuritis, seizure, multiple sclerosis, acute disseminated encephalomyelitis and encephalitis, delirium, acute transverse myelitis, and stroke have been reported after COVID-19 vaccination. Constant headache and myalgia are common manifestations that may necessitate further clinical investigation for stroke. To limit consequences, it is imperative to follow standard treatment protocols for each neurological disorder following COVID-19 vaccination. Immunosuppressive medication can be helpful in the treatment of seizures following vaccination since the immune response is involved in their etiology. Clinicians should be aware of the manifestations after COVID-19 vaccination to respond promptly and effectively. Clinical guidelines for the management of CNS manifestations following COVID-19 vaccination are in high demand and would be useful in each new SARS-CoV-2 variant pandemic.

This educational review article aims to discuss growing evidence from PET studies in the diagnosis and treatment of depression. PET has been used in depression to explore the neurotransmitters involved, the alterations in neuroreceptors, non-neuroreceptor targets (e.g., microglia and astrocytes), the severity and duration of the disease, the pharmacodynamics of various antidepressants, and neurobiological mechanisms of non-pharmacological therapies like psychotherapy, electroconvulsive therapy, and deep brain stimulation therapy, by showing changes in brain metabolism and receptor and non-receptor targets. Studies have revealed alterations in neurotransmitter systems such as serotonin, dopamine, GABA, and glutamate, which are linked to the pathophysiology of depression. Overall, PET imaging has furthered the neurobiological understanding of depression. Despite these advancements, PET findings have not yet led to significant changes in evidence-based practices. Addressing the reasons behind inconsistencies in PET imaging results, conducting large sample size studies with a more standardized methodological approach, and investigating further the genetic and neurobiological aspects of depression may better leverage PET imaging in future studies.

Abstract Renewable energy research has received tremendous attention in recent years in a quest to circumvent the current global energy crisis. This study carefully selected and simulated the copper indium sulfur ternary compound semiconductor material with cadmium sulfide owing to their advantage in photovoltaic applications. Despite the potential of the materials in photovoltaic devices, the causes of degradation in the photovoltaic efficiency using such compound semiconductor materials have not really been investigated. However, electrical parameters of the materials such as open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, and fill factor have been extensively studied and reported as major causes of degradation in materials’ efficiency. Furthermore, identifying such electrical characteristics as a primary degradation mechanism in solar cells, this study work is an ardent effort that investigates the materials' electrical behavior as a cure to the degradation associated with compound semiconductor-based photovoltaic. In this study, we numerically characterized the electrical properties such as fill factor, open circuit voltage, short circuit current density, power conversion efficiency, net recombination rate, net generation rate, generation current density, recombination current density, hole current density, electrons current density, energy band diagram, capacitance–voltage, electric field strength of the heterostructured CIS/CdS compound semiconductor material using SCAP-1D. We also investigated the effect of temperature on the electrical properties of heterostructured materials. The obtained results reveal the uniformity of the total current density in the material despite the exponential decrease in the electron current density and the exponential increase in hole current density. The extracted solar cell parameters of the heterostructured CIS/CdS at 300 K are 18.6% for PCE, 64.8% for FF, 0.898 V for V oc, and 32 mA cm−2 for J sc. After the investigation of the effect of temperature on the CIS/CdS compound semiconductor material, it was observed that the solar cell was most efficient at 300 K. The energy band gap of the CIS/CdS compound semiconductor material shrinks with an increase in temperature. The highest net recombination rate and recombination current is at 400 K, while the net generation rate and generation current density are independent of temperature. The study, on the other hand, gave insights into the potential degradation process, and utilizing the study’s findings could provide photovoltaic degradation remediation.

Abstract Background The prevalence of chronic kidney diseases (CKD) is higher in patients with diabetes. The American diabetes association (ADA) provides components of diabetes care, treatments, and guidelines to diagnose diabetic patients at risk of CKD. Herein we followed the ADA diagnosis guidelines to identify the Type 2 Diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients at risk of CKD which is underestimated in the region. The study main objectives are to investigate the CKD prevalence and association with risk factors according to the ADA classification, and also to identify the T2DM patients at risk of renal diseases. A descriptive retrospective study was conducted. The data were collected using face-to-face interviews and through accessing patients’ medical records from Endocrinology and Cardiology clinics in an academic tertiary care hospital. Results About 40% of the 331 T2DM outpatients were at risk of developing CKD. The majority were in CKD Stage 3, then Stage 2. The estimated GFR (eGFR) values were significantly reduced in the T2DM patients who are; older than 50 years; have diabetes for more than 10 years; and have abnormally high serum and urine creatinine, proteinuria, and albumin to creatinine ratio. Further, the eGFR values were negatively associated with; the duration of T2DM; serum creatinine, proteinuria; and albumin to creatinine ratio. Conclusions This study provides evidence of the increasing risk of CKD among T2DM patients in the region. Hence, T2DM patients especially elders and those with the long onset of diabetes need to go under regular checks on their clinical parameters to prevent CKD progression.

Abstract Background Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is a major component of the total tuberculosis cases reported by the World Health Organization. This is a study conducted to compare microscopy and molecular techniques to determine the prevalence of Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex (MTBC) in EPTB patients. Methods Smear microscopy and genotype MTBDRplus line probe assay (LiPA) were applied to concentrated extrapulmonary clinical specimens from different anatomic sites to determine the presence of M. tuberculosis and their susceptibility to isoniazid (INH) and/or rifampin (RIF). Results A total of 251 specimens comprising 108 (43%) ascitic fluid, 54 (21.5%) pleural aspirate, 24 (9.6%) gastric lavage, 15 (6.0%) pus, 9 (3.6%) synovial fluid, 5 (2%) cerebrospinal fluid, 2 (0.8%) breast aspirate and 34 (13.5%) aspirates from unindicated sites obtained from patients with suspected EPTB attending the Tamale Teaching Hospital were analysed. Microscopically, acid fast bacilli (AFB) were detected in one ascitic fluid and a pus specimen. Using the LiPA, MTBC was observed in four (2.6%) samples; three (3) ascitic fluid and one aspirate. Conclusion M. tuberculosis complex was confirmed in four (2.6%) patients. The most common specimens suspected of EPTB were ascitic fluid, pleural aspirate and gastric lavage. However, MTBC was predominantly detected in ascitic fluid. This result indicates that the LiPA can improve the detection of EPTB in the region and similar settings globally.

Cerebrovascular disease (CVD) is a global health concern, and early detection is crucial for effective intervention. This case report presents a 31-year-old male patient with multiple cardiac risk factors who underwent positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with 18F-sodium fluoride (NaF) and 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) to evaluate for the presence and degree of atherosclerosis in the aorta, carotid arteries, coronary arteries, iliac arteries, and the femoral arteries. Elevated NaF uptake within the bilateral carotid arteries signified substantial ongoing vascular microcalcification. Reduced global brain metabolism and region-specific hypometabolism measured with FDG PET indicated potential cerebrovascular mechanisms that may be influencing neurological function. The findings highlight the potential of emerging PET tracers, such as NaF, to improve the diagnostic accuracy and therapeutic management of CVD. This case emphasizes the importance of a comprehensive diagnostic approach as well as continued investigation into CVD pathophysiology using PET-based techniques, which may guide the development of innovative therapeutic strategies.

Light-Emitting Diodes (LEDs) exhibit a typical Lambertian emission, raising the need for secondary optics to tailor their emission depending on specific applications. Here, we introduce plasmonic metasurfaces to InGaN green emitting quantum wells for LEDs to control their far-field emission directionality and enhance the collection efficiency. The proposed mechanism is based on surface lattice resonances (SLRs) and relies on the near-field coupling between the InGaN multiple quantum wells (MQWs) and periodic arrays of aluminum (Al) nanodisks. Fourier microscopy measurements reveal that the angular photoluminescence emission pattern depends on the lattice constant of the metasurfaces. We demonstrate that integrating Al metasurfaces in LED wafers can enhance the collected outcoupled light intensity by a factor of 5 compared to the same sample without metasurfaces. We have also performed numerical calculations of the far-field emission based on the reciprocity principle and obtained a very good agreement with the experimental data. The proposed approach controls the emission directionality without the need for secondary optics and it does not require post-etching of the GaN, which makes it a potential candidate to control and enhance the generated light from micro-LEDs.

Abstract Cerebrospinal meningitis (CSM) is a public health burden in Ghana that causes up to 10% mortality in confirmed cases annually. About 20% of those who survive the infection suffer permanent sequelae. The study sought to understand the predictive signs and symptoms of bacterial meningitis implicated in its outcomes. Retrospective data from the Public Health Division, Ghana Health Service on bacterial meningitis from 2015 to 2019 was used for this study. A pre-tested data extraction form was used to collect patients’ information from case-based forms kept at the Disease Control Unit from 2015 to 2019. Data were transcribed from the case-based forms into a pre-designed Microsoft Excel template. The data was cleaned and imported into SPSS version 26 for analysis. Between 2015 and 2019, a total of 2446 suspected bacterial meningitis cases were included in the study. Out of these, 842 (34.4%) were confirmed. Among the confirmed cases, males constituted majority with 55.3% of the cases. Children below 14 years of age were most affected (51.4%). The pathogens commonly responsible for bacterial meningitis were Neisseria meningitidis (43.7%) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (53.0%) with their respective strains Nm W135 (36.7%), Nm X (5.1%), Spn St. 1 (26.2%), and Spn St. 12F/12A/12B/44/4 (5.3%) accounting for more than 70.0% of the confirmed cases. The presence of neck stiffness (AOR = 1.244; C.I 1.026–1.508), convulsion (AOR = 1.338; C.I 1.083–1.652), altered consciousness (AOR = 1.516; C.I 1.225–1.876), and abdominal pains (AOR = 1.404; C.I 1.011–1.949) or any of these signs and symptoms poses a higher risk for testing positive for bacterial meningitis adjusting for age. Patients presenting one and/or more of these signs and symptoms (neck stiffness, convulsion, altered consciousness, and abdominal pain) have a higher risk of testing positive for bacterial meningitis after statistically adjusting for age.

Abstract In traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients, a complex cascade of inflammatory responses are frequently observed following trauma. Numerous dietary agents have long been found to have potential in modulating inflammatory responses. This pilot study, designed an enteral formula with low inflammatory properties based on the dietary inflammatory index (DII®) and evaluated its effect on inflammatory and metabolic factors in critically ill TBI patients. This single‐blind randomized controlled pilot study was conducted at the Neurosurgical ICU of Shahid Kamyab Hospital (Mashhad, Iran). A total of 20 TBI patients were randomly assigned to receive either low‐DII score or standard formula at the intensive care unit (ICU). The primary outcomes of the study included clinical status, inflammatory biomarkers, APACHE II, SAPS II, SOFA, and NUTRIC scores. The trial groups did not differ significantly in baseline values. Following 14 days of intervention, there was a statistically significant decrease in the APACHE II, SAPS II, and NUTRIC scores and a significant increase in the GCS score in the low‐DII score formula group compared to the standard formula group. Over 2 weeks, high sensitivity C‐reactive protein (hs‐CRP) values of −2.73 (95% CI: −3.67, −1.79) mg/dL in the low‐DII score formula group versus 0.65 (95% CI: −0.29, 1.58) mg/dL in controls were obtained. Moreover, the length of hospital stay was longer for the standard formula group than for the low‐DII score formula group. The low‐DII score formula improves inflammatory factors (serum hs‐CRP) and metabolic biomarkers (LDL‐c and FBS). Furthermore, clinical outcomes, including the length of hospital stay and disease severity, appear to be enhanced.

Abstract Background Serogroup A Neisseria meningitidis was the major cause of meningococcal meningitis epidemics in the African meningitis belt before 2010 when the monovalent meningococcal A conjugate vaccine (MenAfriVac) was introduced in the region. Therefore, this study aimed to establish the trends in N. meningitidis serogroups from 2016 to 2020 in Ghana’s meningitis belt. Methods Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) confirmed laboratory results of suspected cases of cerebrospinal meningitis from January, 2016 to March, 2020 were obtained from the Tamale Public Health Laboratory. The data were subjected to trend analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences version 25. Differences between discrete variables were analyzed using the Cochran–Armitage trend test. This study examines the relationship between exchange rate fluctuations and external reserves in Nigeria, focusing on the inflation rate, interest rate, and public debt as independent variables. It aims to analyze how these factors collectively influence external reserve management, with specific objectives involving the impact of the inflation rate, the influence of interest rate, and the effects of public debt. Using a causal research design and time series data from 2001 to 2021, sourced from the Central Bank of Nigeria Statistical Bulletin, Eviews 12 facilitates analysis. using ordinary least square Method, Descriptive statistics, regression analysis, and diagnostic tests like the Breusch-Godfrey Serial Correlation LM Test and Heteroscedasticity Test provide insights into external reserves, inflation rate, interest rate, and public debt characteristics. Findings reveal a negative relationship between external reserves and the independent variables, emphasizing the roles of inflation rate, interest rate, and public debt. Regression analysis confirms statistical significance, except for public debt. The R2 value of 0.542050 suggests that 54% of external reserve changes are explained by the selected variables. Diagnostic tests confirm model reliability, holding implications for policymakers and stakeholders in understanding factors influencing external reserve management. In conclusion, the study underscores the critical importance of sound macroeconomic policies in managing Nigeria's external reserves. Negative relationships observed emphasize the need for strategic interventions. Recommendations include maintaining price stability, optimizing interest rate policies, practicing prudent debt management, diversifying funding sources, serving as a guide for policymakers to navigate economic challenges, and enhancing Nigeria's external reserves' resilience.

Introduction Atherosclerosis, the occlusion of arteries due to the accumulation of fatty substances, cholesterol, calcium, and fibrin in the arterial walls, can result in reduced blood flow and a subsequent decrease in oxygen delivery to the organs supplied by the affected artery, including the brain. Positron emission tomography‐computed tomography (PET‐CT) utilizing 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) and 18F‐Sodium Fluoride (NaF) have demonstrated efficacy in the assessment of cerebral glucose metabolism and atherosclerotic calcification, respectively. However, the reported literature has not clearly correlated arterial disease throughout the body with cerebral hypometabolism. Utilizing a novel integration of FDG and NaF PET/CT imaging, our study explores the link between cardiovascular risk factors and regional cerebral metabolism. Methods We compared 79 healthy controls (mean age 44.5 ± 13.8 years, 53.2% males) and 40 individuals (mean age 55.9 ± 11.9 years, 50% males) at increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) as assessed by the systematic coronary risk evaluation (SCORE) tool. All subjects underwent whole‐body FDG‐PET/CT imaging. [18F]fluoride PET/CT imaging was performed using hybrid PET/CT scanners with image correction and reconstruction processes following standard protocols. The quantitative regional analysis of PET images was performed using MIMneuro version 7.1.5 (MIM Software, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio). 70 whole brain structures were analyzed in each subject. MIMneuro provided region‐based analysis, with z‐scores generated by comparing the patient to the selected age‐matched set of normal controls. Using OsiriX MD software, [18F]fluoride PET/CT scans were analyzed with regions of interest (ROIs) manually drawn to assess carotid calcification and standardized uptake value mean (SUVmean), along with ROI volume values. Correlations between the degree of molecular calcification and cerebral FDG uptake in patients with cardiovascular risk factors were evaluated using Pearson’s R, with the significance threshold set at P < 0.05. Results Unhealthy patients demonstrated significant negative correlations between increased calcification in the carotid arteries, as assessed by NaF‐PET, and metabolic activity in the anterior cingulate (r = ‐0.42, p = 0.008) and cingulate regions (r = ‐0.34, p = 0.036). Conversely, healthy patients exhibited significant positive correlations in the pons (r = 0.25, p = 0.042) and pontine tegmentum (r = 0.34, p = 0.005), suggestive of a compensatory mechanism to maintain autonomic and motor functions. Conclusion The present study provides insight regarding the interplay between arterial calcification and neural metabolic activity, particularly as it pertains to regions supplied by the anterior cerebral artery. Our investigation suggests that calcification in the carotid arteries, which give rise to the ACA, has a deleterious impact on the function of the cingulate gyrus. Additionally, the observed positive correlation in the pons and pontine tegmentum in healthy individuals raises intriguing questions regarding potential compensatory mechanisms that may help maintain autonomic and motor functions despite vascular impediments. Understanding the temporal progression of vascular calcification allows for the optimization of surgical strategy and timing, potentially reducing stroke risk and improving patient outcomes. These findings underscore the necessity of persistent surveillance and targeted management strategies concerning carotid calcification.

Introduction Patients with cognitive impairment often have a history of cardiovascular disease (CVD) or multiple cardiovascular risk factors (CRFs) such as hypertension, obesity, and hypercholesterolemia. The literature reports that CVD with CRFs may increase the risk of developing vascular dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease. 18F‐fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography (FDG‐PET) allows for the in vivo study of cerebral glucose metabolism, and can detect metabolic alterations in several neurological diseases. As we age, the brain undergoes both structural and functional changes; the regional distribution of these alterations mirrors cognitive decline. This study aims to assess the effect of aging on regional glucose uptake in subjects with known cardiovascular risk factors. Methods In total, 40 subjects (mean age 55.9 ± 11.89 years, 50% males) with known cardiovascular risk factors underwent FDG‐PET scanning, and 70 whole brain structures were analyzed in each subject. Participants were recruited from a group of patients with chest pain syndromes who were referred for coronary CT angiography. All subjects underwent whole‐body FDG‐PET/CT imaging 180 minutes after the administration of 4.0 MBq/kg dose of FDG. The quantitative regional analysis of PET images was performed using MIMneuro version 7.1.5 (MIM Software, Inc., Cleveland, Ohio). MIMneuro provides region‐based analysis, with z‐scores generated by comparing the patient to the selected age‐matched set of normal controls. Pearson’s R was calculated and evaluated for significance in all variables. The threshold for significance was set at P < 0.05. Results Various significant associations between age and FDG uptake across all 70 brain regions of interest were observed. In particular, age was found to have an inverse correlation with regional metabolism in the middle temporal gyrus (r= ‐0.364, p=0.021), superior frontal gyrus (r= ‐0.433, p=0.005), superior parietal lobule (r= ‐0.354, p=0.025), supplementary motor area (r= ‐0.436, p=0.005), and temporal operculum (r= ‐0.370, p=0.019). Conclusion The results demonstrate a significant inverse correlation between age and FDG uptake in five regions among individuals with cardiovascular risk factors. This information may be useful in the determination of whether such scans might be useful in the evaluation of patients with a history of CVD/CRF or with mild cognitive impairment (MCI). Previous literature has reported that increased medial temporal gyrus atrophy is a predictor of dementia in subjects with MCI, and alterations within this lobe mark the beginning of the disease process. Our strongest inverse correlation, the superior frontal gyrus, has been shown to be related to working memory; hypometabolism in this region has previously correlated with severity of cognitive impairments in attention, executive function, and language. Further research is needed to determine the potential for using FDG‐PET imaging as a tool for early detection and intervention for cognitive decline. If patients with CVD or CRFs can be properly diagnosed, if there exists a metabolic signature of regional functional change, intervention may prove highly beneficial for cognitive function, quality of life, and overall well‐being.

Introduction Atherosclerosis, the hardening and narrowing of the arteries, occurs due to the buildup of plaque on the inner walls of the arteries which can result in reduced blood flow to the organs and tissues. Risk factors such as smoking, chronic kidney disease, and aging can contribute to plaque formation. The gradual loss of elasticity in arterial walls and the presence of other risk factors, such as high blood pressure and diabetes, contribute to the increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) observed in aging populations. Early detection through sensitive and specific imaging methods is important for the detection and treatment of CVD. 18F‐Sodium Fluoride positron emission tomography/computerized tomography (NaF‐PET/CT) can be utilized to detect and quantify molecular calcification and therefore early atherosclerosis in patients with CVD. Research has shown a positive correlation between NaF uptake in the common carotid arteries/thoracic aorta and cardiovascular/thromboembolic risk. This study aims to assess the effect of aging on NaF uptake in the left common carotid artery (LCC) in subjects with known cardiovascular risk factors. Methods In total, 36 subjects (mean age 55.4 ± 12.3 years, 50% males) with known cardiovascular risk factors underwent FDG‐PET/CT. Participants were recruited from a group of patients with chest pain syndromes who were referred for coronary CT angiography. Individuals who were not taking any blood pressure medications and who had a greater than 1% increased risk of fatal CVD, estimated by the systematic coronary risk evaluation tool, were eligible for inclusion into the at‐risk for CVD group. NaF PET/CT was performed 90 min after the intravenous injection of 2.2 MBq of NaF/kg. NaF uptake in the LCC was quantitatively assessed by measuring the blood‐pool‐corrected maximum standardized uptake value (SUVmean) on each axial slice. Pearson’s R was calculated and evaluated for significance in all variables. The threshold for significance was set at P < 0.05. Results A significant association between age in patients with cardiovascular risk factors and NaF uptake in the LCC artery was found. Age positively correlated with NaF uptake (r=0.472, p= 0.004) across all 36 patients. Conclusion Our results demonstrate that NaF uptake increases in the LCC with age in subjects with known cardiovascular risk factors. The strong association between age and calcification of the carotid arteries within a population of individuals with unfavorable cardiovascular and thromboembolic risk profiles demonstrates the potential of NaF PET/CT. NaF PET/CT may allow physicians to evaluate effectiveness of treatment and determine a patient's risk for CVD. However, additional trials are needed to further evaluate the associations found in this study and determine relevance in a clinical setting.

Introduction Cerebrovascular disease (CVD), particularly carotid artery atherosclerosis, contributes substantially to global morbidity and mortality. The ability to precisely detect atherosclerosis is crucial, as it directly influences patient management, including decisions regarding surgical interventions. Given the high prevalence and severe outcomes of CVD, there is an urgent need for improved early detection methods. Utilizing a novel approach, this study pioneers the use of 18F‐sodium fluoride (NaF) PET/CT imaging for the early identification of microcalcification, a key marker of atherosclerosis. A nuanced understanding of vascular calcification's temporal progression may aid in optimally timing surgical interventions, such as carotid endarterectomy or carotid artery stenting, thereby reducing stroke risk. Methods Our study participant is a 31‐year‐old male with atrial fibrillation, multiple cardiovascular risk factors, and class 2 obesity, enrolled in the Cardiovascular Molecular Calcification Assessed by 18F‐NaF PET/CT (CAMONA) study. The patient underwent both FDG‐PET/CT and NaF‐PET/CT imaging. We utilized OsiriX MD software v.13.0.1 (Pixmeo SARL, Bernex, Switzerland), to compute the standardized uptake value (SUVmean), serving as a measure of disease progression in both the global brain and the bilateral carotid arteries. Subsequently, we employed MIMneuro version 7.1.5 (MIM Software, Inc., Cleveland, OH, USA) to conduct a comprehensive regional brain metabolism analysis, harnessing the power of an integrated anatomical atlas. Results NaF‐PET/CT imaging revealed elevated NaF uptake in the bilateral carotid arteries (z‐score = 0.012), suggesting notable microcalcification. Conversely, FDG‐PET/CT imaging revealed low FDG uptake in the carotid arteries, with an average SUVmean of 0.66 for both right and left carotids and a z‐score of −2.32. Analysis of global brain metabolism demonstrated decreased FDG uptake detected by FDG‐PET/CT (z‐score = ‐2.32). Concurrently, we identified a decline in regional brain metabolism, with prominent decreases observed in regions including the brainstem (z score = −1.95), medial temporal lobe (z‐score = −1.81), cerebellum (z–score = −2.13), hippocampus (z‐score = −2.13), inferior frontal gyrus (z‐score = −3.53), lateral orbital gyrus (z‐score = −3.24), and putamen (z‐score = −2.47) (Figure 1). Conclusion Our findings highlight the potential of NaF‐PET/CT imaging to enhance early detection of carotid artery atherosclerosis and cerebral hypometabolism. These results highlight the subtle, yet potent, potential of NaF‐PET/CT scans to detect active, asymptomatic cases where FDG‐PET/CT scans may not indicate high activity. The findings suggest that NaF‐PET could play a pivotal role in diagnosing and managing CVD where traditional tracers encounter limitations. Early recognition of these alterations facilitates clinical decision‐making, including determining the necessity and timing of surgical intervention. This advanced diagnostic tool presents an opportunity to improve pre‐operative assessments by providing insights into disease progression prior to macrocalcification development, a clear advantage over existing imaging modalities. The correlation between vascular calcification and decreased cerebral metabolism enhances our understanding of CVD pathophysiology, thereby paving the way for transformative therapeutic interventions. While these findings provide preliminary insight, further research is crucial to corroborate our results and delineate their potentially transformative implications on patient care, particularly in the context of surgical interventions.

Glioblastomas (GBM) are highly invasive, malignant primary brain tumors. The overall prognosis is poor, and management of GBMs remains a formidable challenge, necessitating novel therapeutic strategies such as dendritic cell vaccinations (DCVs). While many early clinical trials demonstrate an induction of an antitumoral immune response, outcomes are mixed and dependent on numerous factors that vary between trials. Optimization of DCVs is essential; the selection of GBM-specific antigens and the utilization of 18F-fludeoxyglucose Positron Emission Tomography (FDG-PET) may add significant value and ultimately improve outcomes for patients undergoing treatment for glioblastoma. This review provides an overview of the mechanism of DCV, assesses previous clinical trials, and discusses future strategies for the integration of DCV into glioblastoma treatment protocols. To conclude, the review discusses challenges associated with the use of DCVs and highlights the potential of integrating DCV with standard therapies.

BackgroundCOVID-19 vaccines continue to save people’s lives around the world; however, some vaccine adverse events have been a major concern which slowed down vaccination campaigns. Anecdotal evidence pointed to the vaccine effect on menstruation but evidence from the adverse event reporting systems and the biomedical literature was lacking. This study aimed to investigate the physiological changes in women during menstruation amid the COVID-19 vaccination.MethodsA cross-sectional online survey was distributed to COVID-19 vaccinated women from Nov 2021 to Jan 2022. The results were analyzed using the SPSS software.ResultsAmong the 564 vaccinated women, 52% experienced significant menstrual irregularities post-vaccination compared to before regardless of the vaccine type. The kind of menstrual irregularity varied among the vaccinated women, for example, 33% had earlier menstruation, while 35% reported delayed menstruation. About 31% experienced heavier menstruation, whereas 24% had lighter menstrual flow. About 29% had menstruation last longer, but 13% had it shorter than usual. Noteworthy, the menstrual irregularities were more frequent after the second vaccine shot, and they disappeared within 3 months on average. Interestingly, 24% of the vaccinated women reported these irregularities to their gynecologist.ConclusionThe COVID-19 vaccine may cause physiological disturbances during menstruation. Luckily, these irregularities were short-termed and should not be a reason for vaccine hesitancy in women. Further studies are encouraged to unravel the COVID-19 vaccine adverse effect on women’s health.

This research was conducted with the aim of identifying and prioritizing indicators of educational inequality in primary schools in Tehran and it is an exploratory type of research. The statistical population under investigation is all public elementary schools in Tehran. The statistical sample in the qualitative section includes 14 experts and experts in the field of public education, who were selected by snowball sampling, and in the quantitative section, principals, assistants and experts of primary schools in Tehran, who were selected in a multi-stage cluster. . Data collection tools include semi-structured interview, researcher made checklist. The results showed that the educational inequality at the level of primary schools in Tehran includes 7 components, 28 indicators, which are: input component including 4 indicators, school process component including 6 indicators, family background component including 6 indicators, output component including 8 Index, individual context of inequality including 4 indicators, social and political effects of inequalities in education including 4 indicators, geographical indicators. Also, in terms of the influence of components and indicators The amount of benefit from education, and the next priorities in the order of human resources (good teachers), family cultural capital, students' educational aspirations, small family population, school management, parents' expectations and aspirations, parents' educational status, educational progress , the acceptance status of students in model schools, sports, cultural and scientific authorities, the handling of educational trustees, the education of descent, the level of attention of teachers to students, attention to the quality of education.

Colonization of SARS-CoV-2 with specific bacteria may either protect or increase the risk of disease severity. This study aimed to identify microbial organisms in the lower respiratory tract and their association with SARS-CoV-2 infection. This was a cross-sectional study conducted between May 2020 and August 2021 at the Tamale Public Health Laboratory in the Northern part of Ghana. RT-PCRs for SARS-CoV-2 and bacteriological cultures were performed on sputum samples collected from suspected COVID-19 patients. Biochemical identification and antimicrobial susceptibility tests were performed on the bacterial isolates. A total of 380 participants were recruited into the study. Most participants were within the 21–30 years age group (29.6%). RT-PCR testing detected SARS-CoV-2 in 118 (31.1%) patients. Headache was found to be associated with SARS-CoV-2 (p = 0.033). Sputum cultures yielded 187 (49.2%) positive bacteria growths. Klebsiella spp. (20.5%), Moraxella catarrhalis (7.9%), and Pseudomonas spp. (6.3%) were the most commonly isolated bacteria. M. catarrhalis, Serratia spp., and Stenotrophomonas maltophilia were significantly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection. Most of the isolates were resistant to 3rd generation cephalosporins. This study has demonstrated the association between specific bacteria and SARS-CoV-2 infection. Clinicians should investigate possible bacterial co-infections in the management of COVID-19 cases.

The amyloid cascade hypothesis for Alzheimer’s disease is still alive, although heavily challenged. Effective anti-amyloid immunotherapy would confirm the hypothesis’ claim that the protein amyloid-beta is the cause of the disease. Two antibodies, aducanumab and lecanemab, have been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, while a third, donanemab, is under review. The main argument for the FDA approvals is a presumed therapy-induced removal of cerebral amyloid deposits. Lecanemab and donanemab are also thought to cause some statistical delay in the determination of cognitive decline. However, clinical efficacy that is less than with conventional treatment, selection of amyloid-positive trial patients with non-specific amyloid-PET imaging, and uncertain therapy-induced removal of cerebral amyloids in clinical trials cast doubt on this anti-Alzheimer’s antibody therapy and hence on the amyloid hypothesis, calling for a more thorough investigation of the negative impact of this type of therapy on the brain.

Externally bonded wet-layup carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) strengthening systems are extensively used in concrete structures but have not found widespread use in deficient steel structures. To address the challenges of the adhesive bonding of wet-layup CFRP to steel substrates, this study investigated the effect of core–shell rubber (CSR) nanoparticles on the curing kinetics, glass transition temperature (Tg) and mechanical properties of ambient-cured epoxy/CSR blends. The effects of silane coupling agent and CSR on the adhesive bond properties of CFRP/steel joints were also investigated. The results indicate that CSR nanoparticles have a mild catalytic effect on the curing kinetics of epoxy under ambient conditions. The effect of CSR on the Tg of epoxy was negligible. Epoxy adhesives modified with 5 to 20%wt. of CSR nanoparticles were characterized with improved ductility over brittle neat epoxy; however, the addition of CSR nanoparticles reduced tensile strength and modulus of the adhesives. An up to 250% increase in the single-lap shear strength of CFRP/steel joints was accomplished in CSR-modified joints over neat epoxy adhesive joints.

We review the rationale, methodology, and clinical utility of quantitative [18F] sodium fluoride ([18F]NaF) positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) imaging to measure bone metabolic flux (Ki, also known as bone plasma clearance), a measurement indicative of the local rate of bone formation at the chosen region of interest. We review the bone remodelling cycle and explain what aspects of bone remodelling are addressed by [18F]NaF PET-CT. We explain how the technique works, what measurements are involved, and what makes [18F]NaF PET-CT a useful tool for the study of bone remodelling. We discuss how these measurements can be simplified without loss of accuracy to make the technique more accessible. Finally, we briefly review some key clinical applications and discuss the potential for future developments. We hope that the simplified method described here will assist in promoting the wider use of the technique.

Background: Integrated diagnostic networks, which are themselves dependent on robust specimen transport solutions, are fundamental to effective healthcare systems. Objective: This study aimed to pilot an online marketplace for the transport of specimens throughout a laboratory network in Ghana. Methods: Independent drivers were matched with health facilities that required specimen transport using a suite of mobile applications and web portals developed for this study. This marketplace was piloted with seven drivers, two laboratories, and five health facilities in Ghana’s Northern region from March 2019 to October 2019. Results: During the pilot, 182 deliveries were completed for 691 patients, including 4118 laboratory tests for antenatal care, disease surveillance, and clinical testing. Testing included 34 tests for communicable and non-communicable diseases. All but two specimens (laboratory cancellations) were successfully delivered and tested. The median time from request to encrypted emailing of results was 19.7 h, while that for a drop-off request was 0.9 h. In the midwife registry, the median time from patient visit to result recording was 1 day, compared to 4 days in the same months in 2018, and the number of mothers without documented testing decreased from 41 to 3. Similarly, the proportion of tuberculosis specimen deliveries from Buipe Polyclinic to Tamale Zonal Laboratory taking over 1 day fell from 62% at baseline to 3% during the pilot. Conclusion: An online marketplace successfully orchestrated the delivery of laboratory specimens under a variety of clinical circumstances, reducing overall turn-around time without diminution of the overall specimen delivery process. What this study adds: This study established the efficacy of an online marketplace to orchestrate timely and high-quality delivery of specimens within a laboratory network.

Abstract Background This study aimed to compare the maxillary sinus dimensions and surface area in accordance with skeletal malocclusion, gender and ethnicity factors in a sample of Chinese and Yemeni patients. Methods This cross-sectional study analysed 180 maxillary sinuses using 180 lateral cephalometric radiographs. The patients were subdivided into two ethnic groups: Chinese and Yemeni. Each ethnic group comprised 90 patients, and men and women were divided equally. Each ethnic group was classified into three skeletal classes using ANB and Wits appraisal (skeletal Classes I, II and III). Pearson’s correlation coefficient was also used to assess the relationship between maxillary sinus dimensions and cephalometric parameters. Results Men had larger maxillary sinuses than women; skeletal Class II had a higher length and surface area increase than other skeletal classes, although skeletal Classes I and II were almost equal in height. Except for the maxillary sinus length, none of these findings were statistically significant. The maxillary sinuses in Chinese are larger than those in Yemenis (P = 0.000). These variables were positively correlated with SNA, SNB and Co–A. The maxillary sinus length and Co–Gn were positively correlated. The NA–APO and NA–FH angles were also correlated with the maxillary sinus surface area. However, the gonial and GoGn–Sn angles negatively affected the maxillary sinus dimension and surface area. Conclusions Men had larger maxillary sinuses than women in both ethnic groups, and Chinese individuals had larger maxillary sinuses than Yemenis. Skeletal Class II malocclusion of both ethnicities had larger maxillary sinus dimensions. Furthermore, the maxillary sinus dimensions correlated with cephalometric parameters.

Interventional oncologists provide several effective treatment options for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC), including embolization and ablation-based techniques. Molecular imaging methods such as positron emission tomography (PET) can play an important role in managing mCRC patients. In this review, we aim to highlight the role of molecular imaging in mCRC management by interventional oncologists including: initial staging and pretreatment planning; predicting molecular subtypes, prognosis, and treatment outcomes; intraprocedural guidance; and assessing treatment response and post-procedural monitoring.

In recent years, due to the importance of paying attention to the development of women's affairs, this group has been considered as one of the main target groups in the programs of organizing margins and empowering the marginalized metropolises of Iran. Although about half of the marginalized population in these metropolises are women, despite the high emphasis on informal settlement issues, unfortunately, the social and cultural beliefs system of this group, such as the subculture of poverty in the margins, women's beliefs about participation, neighborly relationships, attitudes to social harms, family, childbearing and lifestyle has been neglected by urban managers. The aim of this study was to evaluate and measure the mental health of women living in the city in two marginal areas and the main text of the city and the impact of Slum on them. The type of applied research and the method used descriptive-analytical and for data collection, library and field methods (questionnaires) have been used. The statistical comprehensive of this study is women living in four cities that based on Cochran's formula, 384 questionnaires were distributed in Tehran, Mashhad, Tabriz and Kermanshah randomly in two marginal regions and the main text of the city. In addition to descriptive and inferential tests, logit model has been used to analyze the effect of Slum on women's mental health. The findings showed that mental health status in the main text of the city is higher than the margins of the city. The average of the main text of the city from the perspective of urban women is 2.79 and for urban margins is 2.22. Also, the results of logit model showed that with increasing Slum of mental health of women in the first situation (disease) increases by 35%, but in border condition this variable is effective and the amount of this variable in normal mental health is 0.29%, which indicates that if the person is in normal mental health condition. The effect of Slum on it is less than the state of disease.

Abstract It is an established fact that the Covid-19 pandemic had a persistent economic uncertainty effect than health uncertainty. In this study, the researchers examined the effects of expanding sales online on the financial resilience of enterprises in sub-Sahara Africa (SSA) during the economic downturn. The researchers measured financial resilience by the extent of sales and cash-flows decline during the pandemic. The researchers collected 4751 unweighted data from the World Bank’s Enterprise Survey and it Covid-19 follow-up survey. Findings from the bivariate probit model and the predictive margin probabilities showed that most enterprises in SSA adopted or expanded proportion of sales online during the pandemic. Increasing the proportion of online sales exerted a decreasing effect on sales and cash-flow declines and thus improved financial resilience at a threshold of 40% during the pandemic. Large enterprises were observed to be more resilient than small and medium enterprises, yet domestic and foreign enterprises had the same level of financial resilience during the pandemic. For enterprises in Africa to realise the 40% threshold of online sales, the researchers encourage enterprises to invest in advertisement for product legitimacy.

The level of Nigerian Commercial Banks Credit availability to Rural Customers with the influence of Monetary Policy Instruments motivated this study. The study examined the relationship between Monetary Policy Instruments and Rural Financing by Commercial Banks in Nigeria. The main objective of this study is to investigate the effect of Monetary Policy Instruments on Commercial Banks Rural Loans. Regression analysis was used to analyze the data collected. Data were sourced from the Central Bank of Nigerian Statistical Bulletin. Findings revealed that the correlation coefficient was positively correlated. Findings also revealed that there is no significant relationship between Monetary Policy Instruments and Commercial Banks Rural Loans. The study concluded that the availability of credit to rural bank customers was affected by monetary policy instruments during the analysis period. The study therefore recommends that Commercial banks’ lending rate should be reduced in order for investors to see commercial banks as number one source of finance, Central Bank of Nigeria should increase the minimum reserve of Commercial banks in order to facilitate an adequate credit to commercial banks customers/ investors, Commercial banks should promote a higher level of liquidity to increase their ability to cover withdrawals from their clients and to increase loans and advances to clients.

تضمن البحث الحالي هدفان هما :1.إعداد تمرينات باٌستخدام مسافات أقل من مسافة السباق لتطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص وإنجاز ركض 400 متر للناشئين .2.التعرف على تأثير هذه التمرينات باٌستخدام مسافات أقل من مسافة السباق لتطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص وإنجاز ركض 400 متر للناشئين .ولقد استخدم الباحث المنهج التجريبي لملاءمته وطبيعة البحث ، وتكونت عينة البحث من (12) عداءً ممن يتدربون في جانب الرصافة في مراكز ملعب الشعب ومركز حي أور ومركز ملعب الكشافة وذلك لتوافق العينة لشروط البحث من حيث العمر والانتظام والتواصل بالتدريب ، إذ كانت أعمارهم تتراوح بين 14– 16 سنة ، واختار الباحث اختبار تحمل السرعة ركض 300 متر لقياس قدرة تحمل السرعة الخاصة لفعالية ركض 400 متر واختبار انجاز ركض 400 متر ، وقد استعان الباحث باستخراج النتائج بالمعالجات الإحصائية .واستنتج الباحث ما يأتي :1.إنَّ استخدام تمرينات أقل من مسافة السباق يعمل على تطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص لركض 400 متر كذلك إنجازها .2.إنَّ خصوصية التدريب النوعية من اٌختبار حمل تدريب ملائم ومسافات معينة مقاربة ومشابه للأداء الفعلي للسباق نفسه وقدرات بدنية لها اٌرتباط بركض 400 متر ولها تأثير إيجابي في تطوير مستوى أداء اللاعبين .وأوصى الباحث بالأتي : 1. اٌستخدام التمرينات بمسافات أقل من مسافة السباق في تطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص وإنجاز ركض 400 متر ويكون التركيز على المسافات الأقل .2.إجراء بحث مشابه على المسافات المتوسطة 800 و 1500 متر والحواجز 400 متر.3.اٌستخدام المدة الزمنية الملائمة والشدة العالية في تطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص .4.يوصي الباحث بأنه كلما قرب السباق يفضل أن تكون المسافات المقطوعة لتطوير تحمل السرعة الخاص أقل من مسافة السباق لخصوصية فعالية 400 متر .

This paper presents a numerical simulation using SCAPS 3201 and an electrometer for the investigation of electrical behavior at the interface of heterostructured Cadmium telluride and cadmium sulfide thin films. The paper also explicitly compares the theoretical and experimental results of the synthesized materials via the electrodeposition route. Parameters such as electrical conductivity types and energy band gaps used in the simulation were obtained from the various analytical procedure employed in contrast to the conventional mode of application of the SCAPS simulation. In most research works on CdTe/CdS-based solar cells, the conductivity type, p-type, and n-type used in the SCAPS simulation were based on assumption. However, in this study, photoelectrochemical (PEC) cell measurement of the material's conductivity type helped in the identification of p-type CdTe and n-type CdS. The material's properties were examined using an X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), ultraviolet–visible spectrophotometer (UV-VIS), (PEC), and electrometer. The energy band gaps at varied cathodic potentials and the grain size of the CdTe thin films were estimated as 1.47–1.89 eV and 56 nm while that of the CdS was estimated at 2.37–2.46 eV and 115 nm. The results indicate a noticeable drastic improvement in the performance of electrodeposited p-CdTe and n-CdS thin film-based solar cells, which aid the tuning of the growth potential. The extracted electrical parameters (JSC = 15.22, Voc = 749, FF = 0.82 and QE = 9.0% at 520 nm) using SCAPS and electrometer are evidence of the improvement made and the results from both the SCAPS and electrometer are in tandem.

Background: Penetrating injuries to the brain are rare and have a mortality rate of 40% if they are high velocity. They could occur accidentally or intentionally from suicidal or homicidal attempts. Impalement head injuries could be complicated by intracranial hemorrhage, neurological deficits, infection, and epilepsy but usually have good prognosis. A craniotomy is the preferred surgical intervention for such injuries. Case summary: A 20-year-old male with bipolar disorder presented to a primary-care facility with a nail at the vertex of the head, presumed to be self-inflicted, and was referred to Tamale Teaching Hospital. The GCS was 14/15 with no focal neurological deficits. All other examinations remained normal. A skull x-ray and head computed tomography (CT) scan revealed the position of the nail and aided in diagnosis. A delayed mini craniectomy was performed on the 11th day of admission and the nail was successfully removed with no complications. Conclusion: Nail impalement brain injury is a complex injury whose management can pose challenges to the neurosurgeon in a low-resource center.

Alterations in cerebral glucose metabolism can be indicative of both normal and pathological aging processes. In this retrospective study, we evaluated global and regional neurological glucose metabolism in 73 healthy individuals (mean age: 35.8 ± 13.1 years; 82.5% female) using 18F-Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT). This population exhibited a low prevalence of comorbidities associated with cerebrovascular risk factors. We utilized 18F-FDG-PET/CT imaging and quantitative regional analysis to assess cerebral glucose metabolism. A statistically significant negative correlation was found between age and the global standardized uptake value mean (SUVmean) of FDG uptake (p = 0.000795), indicating a decrease in whole-brain glucose metabolism with aging. Furthermore, region-specific analysis identified significant correlations in four cerebral regions, with positive correlations in the basis pontis, cerebellar hemisphere, and cerebellum and a negative correlation in the lateral orbital gyrus. These results were further confirmed via linear regression analysis. Our findings reveal a nuanced understanding of how aging affects glucose metabolism in the brain, providing insight into normal neurology. The study underscores the utility of 18F-FDG-PET/CT as a sensitive tool in monitoring these metabolic changes, highlighting its potential for the early detection of neurological diseases and disorders related to aging.

Atherosclerosis, a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide, involves inflammatory processes that result in plaque formation and calcification. The early detection of the molecular changes underlying these processes is crucial for effective disease management. This study utilized positron emission tomography/computed tomography (PET/CT) with [18F] sodium fluoride (NaF) as a tracer to visualize active calcification and inflammation at the molecular level. Our aim was to investigate the association between cardiovascular risk factors and [18F] NaF uptake in the left and right common carotid arteries (LCC and RCC). A cohort of 102 subjects, comprising both at-risk individuals and healthy controls, underwent [18F] NaF PET/CT imaging. The results revealed significant correlations between [18F] NaF uptake and cardiovascular risk factors such as age (β = 0.005, 95% CI 0.003–0.008, p < 0.01 in LCC and β = 0.006, 95% CI 0.004–0.009, p < 0.01 in RCC), male gender (β = −0.08, 95% CI −0.173–−0.002, p = 0.04 in LCC and β = −0.13, 95% CI −0.21–−0.06, p < 0.01 in RCC), BMI (β = 0.02, 95% CI 0.01–0.03, p < 0.01 in LCC and β = 0.02, 95% CI 0.01–0.03, p < 0.01 in RCC), fibrinogen (β = 0.006, 95% CI 0.0009–0.01, p = 0.02 in LCC and β = 0.005, 95% CI 0.001–0.01, p = 0.01), HDL cholesterol (β = 0.13, 95% CI 0.04–0.21, p < 0.01 in RCC only), and CRP (β = −0.01, 95% CI −0.02–0.001, p = 0.03 in RCC only). Subjects at risk showed a higher [18F] NaF uptake compared to healthy controls (one-way ANOVA; p = 0.02 in LCC and p = 0.04 in RCC), and uptake increased with estimated cardiovascular risk (one-way ANOVA, p < 0.01 in LCC only). These findings underscore the potential of [18F] NaF PET/CT as a sensitive tool for the early detection of atherosclerotic plaque, assessment of cardiovascular risk, and monitoring of disease progression. Further research is needed to validate the technique’s predictive value and its potential impact on clinical outcomes.

The incessant nature of electrical power supplies in a developing country like Nigeria, the dependence on dry cell batteries for varying domestic applications such as transistor radios, torchlights, remote controls, amongst others continues to rise unabated. Improper disposal of these batteries poses serious adverse effect on the environment and human health. In this study, over 1000 dry cell batteries were collected from different locations in Ede, Osun State sorted and sectioned to harvest the carbon rods which is a key component of the battery cell. The rods were pulverized for about 15 hours and screened into different particle sizes using standard sieves. The microstructural characterization was investigated using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Energy Displacer Spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray Diffractometer (XRD), and Ultraviolet (UV) Spectroscopy. High yield graphite powders (98%) were obtained from the processing. Absorption peak was observed at 272.5 nm by UV spectroscopy while XRD plots yielded a narrow peak of 26.60. The characterization results show good agreement with those available in literature.

In humans two distinct lineages of DCs exist: DC1 and DC2. Efforts to explore the role of DCs in acute graft-versus-host disease (aGVHD) after allogeneic peripheral blood stem–cell transplantation (PBSCT) are gaining traction. However, further research is needed to identify particular lineages and their values in terms of developing an evidence-based aGVHD- or relapse-prevention strategy. We monitored DC counts and subsets in PBSC grafts while harvesting stem cells in recipients to elucidate their value in anticipating disease relapse or aGVHD.Methods: We enrolled 29 participants. Using fluorescence-activated cell sorting, total counts/kg of CD34+, DCs, and DC subsets were analyzed in 29 PBSC-graft components using CMRF44, CD11c, and CD4 monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs).Results: In the 29 grafts, we detected a significant positive correlation (P< 0.01) between DCs and both DC1 and DC2. Significantly higher counts (P< 0.01) of DCs and DC1 in those who had developed aGVHD (nine cases) were also observed. Relapsed cases (two) were also associated with higher counts of DCs and DC2. A significant positive correlation (P< 0.05), was recorded between DCs and DC1 counts and the day of myeloid engraftment, while this was not detected on the day of platelet engraftment. Myeloid engraftment transpired earlier in patients without aGVHD. Increased DC-graft numbers, particularly DC1 measured by CD11c Moabs, were associated with aGVHD. Recipients of higher numbers of CD4bright DCs had an increased risk of relapse after allogeneic PBSCT.Conclusion: This study analyzed DCs in PBSC grafts, using novel specific MoAbs and flow cytometry. Our data showed that higher donor DC1 counts were linked to the incidence of aGVHD and DC2 with relapse. Background: Head lice is one of the threats to public health in advanced and developing societies. In previous studies in Kerman Province, the rate of head lice infection was reported to be 3.8%. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence of head lice infection among female students of elementary schools of Kerman, and to identify the factors involved. Methods: This study was a descriptive cross-sectional study from September 2019 to March 2019. The statistical population in the present study was female students from first to sixth grade of elementary school in districts one and two of Kerman. In selected schools, 2850 female students were examined by census. 179 people were randomly selected from different classes and after the examination; a questionnaire was completed for each of them. Objective (s): despite the efforts made by biomedical investigators in the past three decades to develop an appropriate model and measurement for cultural competence for health care professionals, a comprehensive cultural competencies of medical graduates and its components does not exist in Iran. Therefore, the main aim of the present study was to develop a model for identifying the necessary cultural competencies among graduates of medical sciences. Methods: This was a qualitative study. First we reviewed the literature. Then, semi-structured interviews were conducted with 15 key informants on the field of cultural competence of medical graduates. Finally, a focus group discussion was conducted with the presence of five experts and the findings were obtained. Results: The initial model with the central component of transcendent motivation and three main components of awareness, knowledge, and cultural skills was achieved. Finally, a matrix in three levels of individual (human), university (graduate) and medical professions and three horizontal levels of emotional domain (transcendental motivation), cognitive domains (cultural knowledge and knowledge in general), and behavioral domain (cultural skills). Conclusion: The current model can be used to assess the cultural competencies of graduates of various medical sciences in Iranian universities (while modifying the educational curriculum in universities).

The performance of biomaterials in biological systems is of critical significance for advancing biomedical implants. Duplex Stainless Steel alloys are the major biomaterials due to their significant characteristics. Many functional coatings are deposited on DSS alloy surfaces utilizing numerous surface coating techniques to improve their bioactivity and protect them from corrosion degradations. Coatings of titanium dioxide (TiO2), Hydroxyapatite (HA), and zinc oxide (ZnO) have received considerable attention in the field of surface bioactive modification of DSS alloy implants. The coating techniques play a key role in increasing the required biological characteristics of DSS alloys, such as biocompatibility, mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. In this regard, HA-ZnO, HA-TiO2, and TiO2–ZnO from each coating group are divided into single, double, and triple layers. These coatings were prepared by cold spray and deposited on the surface of the DSS alloy, followed by a heat treatment at 250 °C. The surface morphology of coated surfaces was analyzed utilizing field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), atomic force microscopic (AFM), microhardness test, corrosion test in Ringer solution, and antibacterial test. The coatings showed nano-scale surface morphology with advanced crystallization and homogeneous structures; in the corrosion characteristics utilizing potentiodynamic polarization, triple layers of HA-ZnO coatings displayed advanced nanostructures with higher hardness values (514.75HV). The antibacterial test showed the triple layers of HA-TiO2 and two layers of TiO2–ZnO sensitivity to positive bacteria.

Agricultural productivity is significantly impacted by soil properties, which vary spatially from a small to a larger area. This variation may be caused by a combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors, including human activities like soil management practices. The aim of the current study was to analyze soil spatial variability, create a Digital Soil Map (DSM), and test map information with crop in Southern Ethiopia. A total of 18 geo-referenced surface soil samples at depth of 20 cm were collected. Selected soil Physico-chemical properties such as soil texture, pH, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (av. P), sulfur (S), exchangeable bases [calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K)], soil micronutrients [boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn) and zinc (Zn)] and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were analyzed. The results revealed clay texture with a mean pH value of 4.6 (strong acidity). About 50% of essential nutrients [N, P, S, Ca, Mg, B & Fe] were deficient. The geostatistical analysis has shown that the best-fitted models were exponential for (OC, TN, available P, S, Mg, CEC, B, Fe, and Zn), spherical for (pH, Ca, Cu and Mn), and Gaussian for (C:N, K, K:Mg, and PBS). The range of all soil properties varied from 50 m to 84 m which was above the actual distance between soil samples (i.e., 46 m). The result showed that the spatial dependence values for soil properties of [OC, TN, CEC, PBS, ESP, and Cu]; [pH, C: N ratio, available P, S, Ca, Mg, K, Na, K: Mg ratio and Zn] and [B, Fe, M n] were strong (75%) and moderate (25%–75%), respectively. Model performance using indicators such as prediction mean error (PME), root mean square standardized error (RMSSE), mean standard error (MSE), and root-mean-square error (RMSE) also confirmed the acceptable prediction. The DSM demonstrated the limitation of N, P, S, and B nutrients for intervention. The DSM information was tested under field conditions using haricot bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) with lime and organic fertilizers as treatments. Soil quality serves as the basis for both food security and environmental sustainability. To optimize production and implement soil management interventions, understanding the state of the soil quality is fundamental. Thus, this study was conducted to assess the soil quality of arable lands situated in the Nitisols and Luvisols using different assessment techniques. A total of 57 georeferenced soil samples were taken at a depth of 20 cm (18 from Nitisols and 39 from Luvisols land). The soil samples were analyzed for particle size distribution (PSD), texture, pH, organic carbon (OC), total nitrogen (TN), available phosphorus (P), sulfur (S), exchangeable bases (calcium (Ca), magnesium (Mg), and potassium (K)), soil micronutrients (boron (B), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), and zinc (Zn)), and cation exchange capacity (CEC). The techniques used to estimate soil quality includes principal component analysis (PCA), a normalized PCA, and common soil parameters (soil texture, pH, OC, N, P, and K). The results were expressed in terms of soil quality index (SQI). In addition, the soil fertility/nutrient/index (NI) approach was used. The study aimed to investigate the personality traits of students and their preferred teaching methods at the University of Ghana and Huzhou Normal University. The study specifically aimed at identifying personality traits that apply to psychology students, the kinds of teaching methods students preferred, and ascertaining the relationship between personality traits and preferred teaching methods. A descriptive cross-sectional design was used to conduct the research. The sample size of two hundred and five (205) students from UG and Huzhou University was used. In this study, the researchers collected the data with the help of structured questionnaires. Research Question 1 and Question 2 will be analyzed using frequencies and percentages. Null hypothesis (There is no relationship between personality traits and teaching methods), Hypothesis 1 (There is a relationship between personality traits and teaching methods) will be analyzed using the Chi-Square. Data that will be collected will be analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (*SPSS). The study found that the conscientiousness personality trait among students at both University of Ghana and Huzhou University is the dominant personality trait. The preferred teaching method of students at both University of Ghana and Huzhou University is the cooperative learning method other than teaching methods. There is a relationship between personality traits and teaching methods: There is no relationship between students (participants’) personality traits and teaching methods at both University of Ghana and Huzhou University. It was concluded that most participants possessed conscientiousness personality traits, followed by the agreeableness personality trait and extraversion in UG. For Huzhou University, the conscientiousness personality trait was included by most students, followed by extraversion and agreeableness. It was recommended that the Ministry of Education (MoE) in Ghana and China create, plan and revise their various contents for University Education so that it is geared towards students preferred teaching methods (cooperative method of teaching).

IntroductionCassava production is essential for food security in sub-Saharan Africa and serves as a major calorie-intake source in Nigeria. Estimating the yield gap in Nigeria is essential to indicate the most important limiting factors for production, and identify the yield gap hotspot areas. Secondly, these assessments may help set agendas in policy development and research prioritization where current information is scarce.Materials and methodsHere, Wwe used a crop model, LINTUL5, calibrated for five different cassava varieties based on field experiments embedded into a modeling framework SIMPLACE to estimate potential, water- and nutrient (current) limited cassava yield gaps (YG) as affected by climate factors and contributing a better understanding of yield gaps and its potentials in 30 states of Nigeria.ResultsOur study shows that cumulative radiation and precipitation were the most significant factors associated with cassava yield variability (p < 0.01). The YG averaged across states was estimated as 18.2 Ton7ha-1, with a maximum of 31.2 Ton7ha-1 35 in Kano state. Across the states, nutrient limitation accounts for 55.3% of the total cassava yield gap, while the remaining 44.7% is attributed to water limitation. The highest untapped water-limited yields were estimated in the northern states, such as Bauchi, Gombe, and Sokoto, characterized by the short rainy season.ConclusionOur results showed that most northern states are better equipped to become leading cassava producers in Nigeria under adequate crop management practices involving irrigation and soil fertility enhancement. We reached this conclusion because the northern states usually receive the highest radiation from their characteristic reduced cloud cover, even Therefore, policy and management interventions can be prioritized in these areas. Conclusively, the current cassava yield levels can be increased by a factor of five by emphasizing nutrient and soil health management and irrigation, particularly in areas characterized by a shorter rainy season (Sudan Savanna) in Nigeria.

The appropriate use of limited natural resources for generating basic human needs such as energy, food, and water, is essential to help the society function efficiently. Hence, a new approach called nexus is being considered to resolve the effects of intrinsic trade-offs between the essential needs. A review of different methods and frameworks of the water-energy-food nexus was done in this article to give a detailed repository of information on existing approaches and advocate the development of a more holistic quantitative nexus method. Assessing biofuels under the water-energy-food nexus perspective, this review addresses the sustainability of bioenergy production. The results show the countries that can sustainably produce first-generation biofuels. Only a few methods have varied interdisciplinary procedures to analyse the nexus, and more analytical software and data on resource availability/use are needed to address trade-offs between these interacting resource sectors constituting the nexus. Also, “land” is suggested as an additional sector to consider in future studies using both the nexus index and life cycle assessment methodology. The review reveals that to tackle composite challenges related to resource management, cross-disciplinary methods are essential to integrate environmental, socio-political facets of water, energy, and food; employ collaborative frameworks; and seek the engagement of decision-makers.
