6. A review–unguided optical communications: Developments, technology evolution, and challenges

Abstract

This review paper discusses the complete evolution of free-space optical (FSO) communication, also known as unguided optical communication (UOC) technologies, all the way back to ancient man’s fire to today’s machine-learning-supported UOC systems. The principles, significance, and developments that have happened over the past several decades, as well as installation methodologies, technological limitations, and today’s challenges of UOCs are presented. All the subsets of UOC: FSO communication, underwater optical wireless communication (UOWC), and visible light communication (VLC), with their technology/system developments, potential applications, and limitations are reviewed. The state-of-the-art developments/achievements in (i) FSO channel effects and their mitigation techniques; (ii) radio-over-FSO techniques; (iii) wavelength division multiplexing and sub-carrier multiplexing techniques; (iv) FSO for worldwide interoperability for microwave access applications; (v) space optical satellite communication (SOSC); (vi) UWOC; (vii) photoacoustic communication (PAC); (viii) light-fidelity; (ix) VLC; (x) vehicular VLC (V2LC); and (xi) optical camera communication are reviewed. In addition, the current developments on emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (to improve the performance of UOC systems), energy harvesting (for the effective utilization of UOC channels), and near-future communication network scenarios (mandatory for secured broadband digital links) are covered. Finally, in brief, to achieve the full potential of UOC systems, challenges that require immediate research attention are summarized.

Abstract

The key challenge in free space optical (FSO) communications is combating turbulence‐induced fading. As the channel fading in FSO is quasi‐static, the transmission parameters such as the code rates, transmit power and modulation schemes can be modified with respect to the channel state information transmitted via the feedback path. As a result, adaptive channel coding is considered as one of the practical approaches to improve the FSO link performance. In this study, the FSO system with polar codes is investigated and its performance is analysed by determining the optimum code‐rate required to achieve a bit error rate of 10−9 under weak turbulence. It is shown that, using Monte‐Carlo simulations for the scintillation indices of 0.12 and 0.2, the successive cancelation list (SCL) decoder offers coding gains of 2.5 and 0.3 dB, respectively, as compared with SC decoder, and for the scintillation index of 0.31, the SC decoder offers a coding gain of 2.5 dB compared to that of the SCL decoder for the code rate. Abstract

We propose a quantized feedback-based differential signaling scheme for $2 \times 1$ free space optical (FSO) multiple-input single-output communication systems. The analytical bit error rate (BER) for the proposed differential signaling scheme is derived and compared with the existing differential signaling scheme for FSO systems. The asymptotic BER of the proposed scheme is also determined and it is shown by using the asymptotic BER expression that the proposed scheme achieves full spatial diversity of two. Moreover, the effect of the feedback error on the performance of the proposed scheme is studied and it is demonstrated by simulation-based and analytical results that the proposed scheme significantly outperforms a previously proposed differential signaling scheme in terms of turbulence fades reduction for tolerable feedback errors.

32. Impact of link parameters and channel correlation on the performance of FSO systems with the differential signaling technique.

Abstract

We investigate the effects of link parameters and the channel correlation coefficient on the detection threshold, Q-factor, and bit-error-rate (BER) of a free-space optical system employing a differential signaling scheme. In systems employing differential signaling schemes, the mean value of the signal is used as the detection threshold level, provided that differential links are identical or highly correlated. However, in reality, the underlying links are not essentially identical and have a low level of correlation. To show the significance of the link parameters as well as the correlation coefficient, we derive analytical relations describing the effect of weak turbulence and we determine the improvement of Q-factor with the channel correlation. Further, for the same signal-to-noise ratio, we demonstrate that a link with a higher extinction ratio offers improved performance. We also propose a closed-form expression of the system BER. We present experimental results showing improved Q-factor for the correlated channel case compared to the uncorrelated channel. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]
