Microservice architecture has become widely-used in industry, with tech giants like Amazon, Twitter, and LinkedIn leveraging microservices to evolve their web-scale applications. Microservice architecture brings benefits such as scalability and technological heterogeneity, although at a cost of complexity. A number of microservice patterns have been proposed to address this cost. This thesis explores the use of microservice patterns in recovered microservice architectures; however, there have been few attempts at recoveries of microservice systems. The contributions of this thesis are: 1. A definition of microservices as an architectural style, 2. A recovery technique for orchestrated systems which has been applied to three benchmark systems, and 3. A microservice pattern identification technique for five patterns, and applying it to the three recovered systems. In our results, 4 of the 5 patterns in all three benchmark systems were successfully identified.

We performed an epidemiological investigation and genome sequencing of severe acute respiratory coronavirus virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) to define the source and scope of an outbreak in a cluster of hospitalized patients. Lack of appropriate respiratory hygiene led to SARS-CoV-2 transmission to patients and healthcare workers during a single hemodialysis session, highlighting the importance of infection prevention precautions.

Highlights • FDA issued a EUA for FFR Decontamination. • Multiple systems exist for FFR decontamination. • Facilities must consider which one works best., During the COVID-19 crisis, disposable N-95 filtering face piece respirators became a critical supply in many health care institutions. Infection preventionists nationwide struggled with ensuring their facilities had personal protective equipment available while utilizing crisis capacity strategies. Many facilities began using US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and US Food and Drug Administration guidance to disinfect and reprocess N95 respirators for extended use. N95 respirators are collected for all clinical units on a scheduled basis by the sterile processing department (SPD) in individually labeled bins. Bins are checked into SPD and logged into electronic system to track mask volumes by unit. Masks are inspected by SPD team members, packaged in sterile peel packs on the decontamination side and sent to the clean side of the department. Masks are then reprocessed in the appropriate equipment based on the US Food and Drug Administration Emergency Use Authorization guidelines. The facility was able to provide a consistent method of N95 reprocessing throughout the facility. Utilizing an interdisciplinary team to include the operating room, infection preventionist, SPD, and nursing leadership to troubleshoot and identify barriers on a routine basis was key to making the program a success for the many months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This essay takes the position, consistent with Ayer’s own retrospective judgments, that the philosophical significance of Language, Truth and Logic (LTL) was minimal at best, and that its real significance was socio-historical. LTL stands as one of the most influential expressions of an overzealous and simplistic scientism that swept through Western culture in the first half of the twentieth century. This scientism played a crucial role in problematizing the West’s relationship to truth in ways that contributed to the eventual emergence of “post-truth” culture, with its “post-truth politics.” This in turn made possible the disastrous results of recent votes and elections in Britain and, above all, in the United States. In short, LTL’s real significance resides in the role it played as a sophisticated and successful bit of propaganda for an ideology that played a crucial role in loosing Western culture from its moral and epistemic moorings.

A new class of rapid-sintering, fine-grained alloys recently developed is being commercially scaled through both traditional and additive manufacturing approaches. This paper discusses the scientific underpinnings of these new alloys and their processing, specifically for a W-based alloy as an alternative to Tungsten Heavy Alloy (WHA). This new alloy offers similar density and sintering temperatures to traditional WHA, but with a fine, thermally-stable microstructure that has the potential for higher temperature operation and significantly higher strength as compared to WHAs. The new alloy can be manufactured through established traditional approaches (e.g. press and sinter) and also through a recently developed 3D printing approach.

Background Healthcare-associated transmission of SARS-CoV-2 is relatively rare and may be difficult to quantify. We performed an epidemiological investigation and SARS-CoV-2 genome sequencing to define the source and scope of a SARS-CoV-2 outbreak in a cluster of hospitalized patients Methods We conducted an outbreak investigation after identifying hospital-onset COVID-19 in patients receiving hemodialysis in January 2021. Electronic medical record review, staff interviews, review of employee schedule logs, and contact tracing were used to determine the outbreak timeline and identify exposed healthcare workers (HCW). SARS-CoV-2 genomes were sequenced from residual nasopharyngeal swab samples from 6 individuals in the outbreak investigation and compared to sequences from 14 patients in the same facility, 54 patients in nearby facilities, and 375 publicly available sequences from individuals in the state of Georgia. Results Eight patients with hospital-onset COVID-19 were identified (Cases 1-8); all were receiving hemodialysis and 5 were bedded in a single inpatient nursing unit. Among 53 potentially exposed HCW, 29 underwent testing and 5 were positive (Cases 9-13). The suspected index patient (Case 1) was found to have been coughing and inconsistently wearing a mask during a hemodialysis session on the same day that 6 of the 7 other patients and one HCW (Case 10) were in close proximity in the hemodialysis unit (Figure 1A). Further investigation revealed lack of use of curtain barriers in the hemodialysis bays, inconsistent use of personal protective equipment by HCW, and overcrowding of staff breakrooms. Among the 6 samples available for phylogenetic analysis, SARS-CoV-2 sequences from 5 (4 patients and 1 HCW, Case 9) were identical and at least 4 SNPs removed from the next closest sequence in this study, supporting a transmission cluster (Figure 1B). The sequence from the sixth sample (HCW Case 10) was phylogenetically distinct, indicating an independent source of infection. Conclusion Lack of appropriate respiratory hygiene led to SARS-CoV-2 transmission during a single hemodialysis session, based on clinical and genomic epidemiology. This chapter surveys the respective influences of personalism and of analytic philosophy on twentieth-century thought about persons. It shows that personalism promoted a concept of personhood that is supportive of human dignity and conducive to positive moral and social engagement, as exemplified in personalism’s best-known representative, Martin Luther King, Jr. By contrast, the analytic tradition has exhibited a persistent tendency to undermine personhood as King and the personalists understood it, while failing to supply a metaphysically and morally adequate alternative. This unfortunate legacy is worth reversing if possible. With this in mind, I suggest that contemporary analytic philosophy has something important to learn from personalism concerning what counts as an adequate metaphysical basis for human dignity and the moral life.

Background Measuring and providing feedback about hand hygiene (HH) compliance is a complicated process. Electronic HH monitoring systems have been proposed as a possible solution; however, there is little information available about how to successfully implement and maintain these systems for maximum benefit in community hospitals. Methods An electronic HH monitoring system was implemented in 3 community hospitals by teams at each facility with support from the system vendor. Compliance rates were measured by the electronic monitoring system. The implementation challenges, solutions, and drivers of success were monitored within each facility. Results The electronic HH monitoring systems tracked on average more than 220,000 compliant HH events per facility per month, with an average monthly compliance rate >85%. The sharing of best practices between facilities was valuable in addressing challenges encountered during implementation and maintaining a high rate of use. Discussion Drivers of success included a collaborative environment, leadership commitment, using data to drive improvement, consistent and constant messaging, staff empowerment, and patient involvement. Conclusions Realizing the full benefit of investments in electronic HH monitoring systems requires careful consideration of implementation strategies, planning for ongoing support and maintenance, and presenting data in a meaningful way to empower and inspire staff.

Estrogen mediates the growth and differentiation of breast epithelial cells and plays an important role in breast cancer progression. The upregulation of estrogen receptors has been linked to p190B RhoGAP in vivo. p190B regulates the activity of several Rho GTPases in vitro. To better understand the molecular mechanism of p190B's role in tumor progression, we sought to develop a cell culture model that would recapitulate the effects of p190B on various growth factor signaling pathways. Protein expression of p190B was knocked down using siRNA in MCF-7 breast cancer cells cultured in the absence of steroid hormones. Upon stimulation with estrogen, cell proliferation did not significantly differ between MCF-7 cells expressing reduced p190B and those expressing normal levels of p190B, suggesting that the effects of p190B on estrogen receptor expression are not cell autonomous and that additional components of the tumor microenvironment are required to recapitulate the in vivo findings. In this paper, I examine a puzzle that emerges from what J. P. Moreland has called the traditional realist view of quality instances. Briefly put, the puzzle is to figure out how quality instances fit into the overall structure of a concrete particular, given that the traditional realist view of quality instances prima facie seems incompatible with what might be called the traditional realist view of concrete particulars. After having discussed the traditional realist views involved and the puzzle that emerges from their juxtaposition, I propose an alternative realist view of quality instances which resolves the puzzle. In short, the puzzle is solved by treating the distinction between a concrete particular and its quality instances as a distinction of reason, and by adopting the view that the individuating element of a concrete particular must also serve as its unifying element – a view which Moreland, one of traditional realism’s most stalwart contemporary defenders, rejects.

The careful historical and metaphilosophical attention recently bestowed upon analytic philosophy has revealed that traditional ways of defining it are inadequate. In the face of this inadequacy, contemporary authors have proposed new definitions that detach analytic philosophy from its turn of the twentieth century origins. I argue that this contemporary trend in defining analytic philosophy is misguided, and that it diminishes the likelihood of our coming to an accurate historical and metaphilosophical understanding of it. This is especially unsatisfactory since such understanding is essential to finding an adequate remedy for the widely perceived ills of contemporary analytic philosophy. I suggest that a more fruitful approach to developing such understanding might begin with treating the unity of analytic philosophy as illusory.

This paper critically examines Hume’s argument against the knowledge/existence of substantival mind. This denial is rooted in his epistemology which includes a theory of how complex ideas which lack corresponding impressions are manufactured by the imagination, in conjunction with the memory, on the basis of three relations among impressions: resemblance, continuity and constant conjunction. The crux of my critique consists in pointing out that these relations are such that only an enduring, unified agent could interact with them in the way Hume describes. I note that Hume attempts to provide such an agent by invoking the activities of imagination and memory, but that it is unclear where these belong in his system. After discussing the relevant possibilities, I conclude that there is no category within the limits of his system that can accommodate the faculties and allow them to do the work Hume assigned to them. I then note that Hume’s rejection of substantival mind rests upon the assumption that something like substantival mind exists; for the action of the latter is required for the proper functioning of the process of fabrication which creates the fictitious notion of substantival mind. My concluding argument is that if the existence of substantival mind is implicit in Hume’s argument against substantival mind, then his argument resembles an indirect proof, and ought to be considered as evidence for, rather than against, the existence of substantival mind.
