The suppression of charmonium states in heavy-ion collisions is a phenomenon understood as a consequence of quark gluon plasma formation in the hot, dense system formed in heavy ion collisions at the LHC. In addition to hot matter effects in heavy-ion collisions, so-called cold nuclear effects that modify charmonium production are also present. Therefore, a full assessment requires detailed studies in both A+A and p +A collisions. Based on p +Pb data collected in 2013 and pp and Pb+Pb data collected in 2015 at the LHC, the ATLAS experiment has studied prompt and non-prompt J / ψ and ψ (2S) production via the dimuon decay final states. The production yields and excited-to-ground state yield ratios, measured in p +Pb and Pb+Pb with respect to that measured in pp collision data, are presented in intervals of transverse momentum, rapidity and centrality. This is an extension of our recent work on $D^{+}(c\bar {d}),D^{o}(c\bar {u})$ production from p-p and d-Au collisions to $B^{+}(b\bar {d}),B^{o}(b\bar {u})$ production from p-p and A-A collisions. The rapidity cross sections for $B^{+}(c\bar {d}),B^{o}(b\bar {u})$ production from both p-p and A-A collisions are estimated. Our present work makes use of previous work on J/Ψ, Ψ′(2 S), ϒ( n S) production in p-p and A-A collisions, with the main new aspect being the fragmentation probability, $D_{b \rightarrow b\bar {q}}$ , which turns out to be similar to the fragmentation probability $D_{c \rightarrow c\bar {q}}$ used in our recent work. A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty hadrons into J/psi is considered, where the J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/c. The bb production cross section at mid-rapidity, d sigma(bb)/dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, sigma(bb), are obtained. This measurement is combined with results on inclusive J/psi production to determine the prompt J/psi cross sections. The results in p-Pb collisions are then scaled to expectations from pp collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy to derive the nuclear modification factor R-pPb, and compared to models to study possible nuclear modifications of the production induced by cold nuclear matter effects. RpPb is found to be smaller than unity at low pT for both J/psi coming from beauty hadron decays and prompt J/psi.

A measurement of beauty hadron production at mid-rapidity in proton-lead collisions at a nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV is presented. The semi-inclusive decay channel of beauty hadrons into J/psi is considered, where the J/psi mesons are reconstructed in the dielectron decay channel at mid-rapidity down to transverse momenta of 1.3 GeV/c. The bb production cross section at mid-rapidity, d sigma(bb)/dy, and the total cross section extrapolated over full phase space, sigma(bb), are obtained. This measurement is combined with results on inclusive J/psi production to determine the prompt J/psi cross sections. The results in p-Pb collisions are then scaled to expectations from pp collisions at the same centre-of-mass energy to derive the nuclear modification factor R-pPb, and compared to models to study possible nuclear modifications of the production induced by cold nuclear matter effects. RpPb is found to be smaller than unity at low pT for both J/psi coming from beauty hadron decays and prompt J/psi.

We present the charged-particle pseudorapidity density in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV in centrality classes measured by ALICE. The measurement covers a wide pseudorapidity range from -3.5 to 5, which is sufficient for reliable estimates of the total number of charged particles produced in the collisions. For the most central (0-5%) collisions we find 21 400 +/- 1 300, while for the most peripheral (80-90%) we find 230 +/- 38. This corresponds to an increase of (27 +/- 4)% over the results at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV previously reported by ALICE. The energy dependence of the total number of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions is found to obey a modified power-law like behaviour. The charged-particle pseudorapidity density of the most central collisions is compared to model calculations-none of which fully describes the measured distribution. We also present an estimate of the rapidity density of charged particles. The width of that distribution is found to exhibit a remarkable proportionality to the beam rapidity, independent of the collision energy from the top SPS to LHC energies. (C) 2017 The Author(s). We present the charged-particle pseudorapidity density in Pb-Pb collisions at root s(NN) = 5.02 TeV in centrality classes measured by ALICE. The measurement covers a wide pseudorapidity range from -3.5 to 5, which is sufficient for reliable estimates of the total number of charged particles produced in the collisions. For the most central (0-5%) collisions we find 21 400 +/- 1 300, while for the most peripheral (80-90%) we find 230 +/- 38. This corresponds to an increase of (27 +/- 4)% over the results at root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV previously reported by ALICE. The energy dependence of the total number of charged particles produced in heavy-ion collisions is found to obey a modified power-law like behaviour. The charged-particle pseudorapidity density of the most central collisions is compared to model calculations-none of which fully describes the measured distribution. We also present an estimate of the rapidity density of charged particles. The width of that distribution is found to exhibit a remarkable proportionality to the beam rapidity, independent of the collision energy from the top SPS to LHC energies. (C) 2017 The Author(s). The pseudorapidity density of charged particles, dN(ch)=d eta, at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions has been measured at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair of root(NN)-N-s p = 5.02 TeV. For the 5% most central collisions, we measure a value of 1943 +/- 54. The rise in dNch= d. as a function of root(NN)-N-s p is steeper than that observed in proton-proton collisions and follows the trend established by measurements at lower energy. The increase of dNch= d. as a function of the average number of participant nucleons, hNparti, calculated in a Glauber model, is compared with the previous measurement at root(NN)-N-s p = 2.76 TeV. A constant factor of about 1.2 describes the increase in dNch= d. from root(NN)-N-s p = 2.76 to 5.02 TeV for all centrality classes, within the measured range of 0%-80% centrality. The results are also compared to models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions.

The centrality is a key parameter in the study of the properties of QCD matter at extreme temperature and energy density, because it is directly related to the initial overlap region of the colliding nuclei. Geometrical properties of the collision, such as the number of participating nucleons and number of binary nucleon-nucleon collisions, are deduced from a Glauber model with a sharp impact parameter selection, and shown to be consistent with those extracted from the data. The centrality determination provides a tool to compare ALICE measurements with those of other experiments and with theoretical calculations. The centrality dependence of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 2.76 TeV is presented. The charged-particle density normalized per participating nucleon pair increases by about a factor 2 from peripheral (70-80%) to central (0-5%) collisions. The centrality dependence is found to be similar to that observed at lower collision energies. The data are compared with models based on different mechanisms for particle production in nuclear collisions. The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at mid-rapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a centre-of-mass energy per nucleon pair sqrt(sNN) = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section the pseudo-rapidity density of primary charged particles at mid-rapidity is 1584 +- 4 (stat) +- 76 (sys.), which corresponds to 8.3 +- 0.4 (sys.) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to central Au-Au collisions at sqrt(sNN) = 0.2 TeV. This measurement provides the first experimental constraint for models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies. The first measurement of the charged-particle multiplicity density at midrapidity in Pb-Pb collisions at a center-of-mass energy per nucleon pair root s(NN) = 2.76 TeV is presented. For an event sample corresponding to the most central 5% of the hadronic cross section, the pseudorapidity density of primary charged particles at midrapidity is 1584 +/- 4(stat) +/- 76(syst), which corresponds to 8.3 +/- 0.4(syst) per participating nucleon pair. This represents an increase of about a factor 1.9 relative to pp collisions at similar collision energies, and about a factor 2.2 to central Au-Au collisions at root s(NN) = 0.2 TeV. This measurement provides the first experimental constraint for models of nucleus-nucleus collisions at LHC energies.
