Esta proposta de arquitetura detalha uma infraestrutura com capacidades superiores à clássica arquitetura Amazon EC2 no que diz respeito ao processamento, memória e armazenamento, utilizando uma combinação de serviços da Amazon Web Services (AWS). A arquitetura em questão utiliza um balanceamento de carga inteligente para distribuir uniformemente as solicitações provenientes da Internet entre as instâncias Amazon EC2 Spot, proporcionando alta disponibilidade em altas cargas de trabalho. Diferentemente da arquitetura clássica, puramente baseada no Amazon EC2 On-demand, esta arquitetura utiliza um Auto Scaling Group para redimensionar horizontalmente as instâncias Amazon EC2 Spot, mantendo sempre um nível de redundância igual ou superior a três instâncias. Isso amplia as capacidades de processamento e memória, ao mesmo tempo que reduz entre 50% e 60% os custos com infraestrutura de servidores, ao utilizar instâncias sobressalentes. Devido à tecnologia de balanceamento de carga inteligente empregada, utilizando uma tabela de roteamento dinâmica e distribuição uniforme de carga de trabalho por meio de uma FaaS que atua como proxy reverso, é possível atingir níveis de confiabilidade e disponibilidade que tornam a arquitetura utilizável em serviços de propósitos gerais. Assim, esta é uma alternativa à arquitetura puramente baseada no Amazon EC2.

Esta arquitetura de referência detalha a estrutura do sistema Shortly, um encurtador de links, construído usando a combinação de serviços da Amazon Web Services (AWS). O sistema é operado principalmente por AWS Lambda para computação sem servidor, com o Amazon DynamoDB fornecendo uma solução de banco de dados NoSQL. O framework Serverless Stack (SST) é empregado para facilitar o desenvolvimento, enquanto o Seed atua como o provedor de serviço de DevOps, gerenciando os pipelines, construção e implantação. Por trás de tudo, o AWS Cloud Development Kit e o CloudFormation são utilizados para modelar e provisionar os recursos da AWS. Por fim, a interação entre CloudFront e o S3 Bucket é usada para entregar uma interface de usuário eficiente e armazenar dados, respectivamente. Esta arquitetura de referência ilustra o fluxo de dados, distribuição de recursos e processos de implementação para esclarecer o funcionamento interno do Shortly.

Das Konzept des serverless computing bietet einige Chancen, da es den Benutzer von verschiedenen Sorgen und Verantwortlichkeiten insbesondere im Zusammenhang mit der Skalierbarkeit entlastet. Dies führt zu einer steigenden Popularität und Relevanz für zahlreiche Cloud-Applikationen. Infolgedessen liegt das Ziel dieser Diplomarbeit darin, die Anwendungsfälle, Herausforderungen als auch Chancen, die bei der Benutzung von serverless computung auftreten, zu untersuchen. Hierzu wurden die Ergebnisse zahlreicher wissenschaftlicher Arbeiten analysiert. Außerdem ist die Bestimmung von Diensten, welche für die serverlose Bereitstellung und Automatisierung einer Webapplikation innerhalb der Amazon Web Services Cloud verwendet werden können, ebenfalls Teil dieser Arbeit. Dafür wird eine umfassende Demonstration der Amazon S3 und AWS Lambda Dienste bereitgestellt. Dabei wird eine Webapplikation berücksichtigt die Bilder zuschneidet und in die Cloud hochlädt. Das Resultat dieser Arbeit zeigt, dass serverless computing besonders für Anwendungsfälle mit Schwankungen in der Arbeitsbelastung, wie zum Beispiel die Internet of Things Umgebung, geeignet ist. Das Internet of Things formt in der Kombination mit serverless computing eine vielversprechende Möglichkeit. Aufgrund der Integration mehrerer Technologien ist hierbei auch der Nachhaltigkeitsaspekt ein wichtiges Thema. Im Umgang mit der Nachhaltigkeit sind die Kaltstarts von großer Bedeutung und stellen somit die Hauptherausforderung des serverless computing dar. Zusätzlich erfordern Maßnahmen gegen Kaltstarts eine passende Funktionsplanung, was sich als eine weitere Herausforderung erweist. Die Demonstration zeigt, dass mit den entsprechenden Konfigurationen die Amazon S3 und AWS Lambda Dienste einen geeigneten Ansatz für die Nutzung des serverless computing Konzepts mit einer Webapplikation bilden, da alle Aufgaben hinsichtlich des Zuschneidens und Hochladens von Bildern automatisiert sind. Außerdem ist der Benutzer bei der Nutzung dieser Dienste für jegliche betriebliche Anliegen wie Skalierbarkeitskonfigurationen nicht verantwortlich. The concept of serverless computing offers several opportunities as it relieves the user of various concerns and responsibilities especially in terms of scalability, leading to an increasing popularity and relevance for numerous cloud applications. Consequently, the aim of this thesis is to investigate the use cases, challenges as well as opportunities that arise when utilizing serverless computing. For this purpose, the results of numerous scientific papers were analyzed. Furthermore, the determination of services that can be utilized within the Amazon Web Services cloud to provide and automate a web application in a serverless way is also part of this thesis. To meet this objective, a comprehensive demonstration of the Amazon S3 and AWS Lambda services is provided while considering a web application that serves the purpose of resizing and uploading images to the cloud. The outcome of this thesis shows that serverless computing is especially suitable for use cases that experience fluctuations in the workload such as the Internet of Things environment, which also forms a promising opportunity when combining with serverless computing. Because of the integration of several technologies in this regard, the sustainability aspect is an important topic as well. When dealing with sustainability, the cold starts are of great importance and thus represent the main concern and challenge of serverless computing. Moreover, measures against cold starts require the use of an appropriate function scheduling which proves to be another challenge. The demonstration determines that the Amazon S3 and AWS Lambda services with appropriate configurations form the suitable approach for utilizing the serverless computing concept with the corresponding web application since all the tasks regarding image resizing and uploading are automated. Furthermore, when utilizing these services, the user is not responsible for any operational concerns such as scalability configurations.

The use of serverless architectures has grown exponentially in recent years, providing a more cost-effective, scalable, and flexible solution for building and deploying applications. However, as with any application, testing is a critical step in ensuring the quality and reliability of the software. Infrastructure as code (IaC) is a methodology that has become increasingly popular for managing and provisioning cloud resources. By using code to define the infrastructure, teams can quickly and consistently deploy applications and ensure that their environments are identical across different stages of the development cycle. This thesis aims to evaluate different IaC frameworks for testing serverless applications in AWS. The evaluation focuses on the most popular frameworks such as Terraform, CloudFormation, and Pulumi, among others. The aim is to determine which framework is best suited for serverless application testing based on several criteria such as ease of test implementation, community support, cost effectiveness, and performance. The thesis utilize empirical research methodology to conduct a series of experiments to evaluate the selected frameworks. The experiments measure and compare the performance and practicalities of the implementation. The research investigates the impact of IaC frameworks on serverless application development workflows and identify potential challenges and limitations. The results of the evaluation is presented, analyzed, and discussed, and recommendations are made for the best IaC framework for testing serverless applications in AWS. The thesis concludes with a summary of the findings, implications for practice, and areas for future research. Overall, this thesis provides valuable insights for software developers and organizations interested in adopting IaC frameworks for testing their serverless applications in AWS.

This master's thesis deals with the automation of a continuous integration/deployment cycle on a serverless API based on a Lambda function developed in Node.js, whose functionality is exposed through the AWS Lambda service in FaaS mode (Function as service). The implementation makes use of the ecosystem of services available on AWS for the automation of the development life cycle of a serverless application, focusing on the processes for version control, testing, delivery and deployment of software, all orchestrated through a pipeline. In addition, the use of serverless application development frameworks is incorporated: AWS SAM and Serverless, with the aim of analyzing their contribution in the automation of the deployment of applications of this type, given that they allow AWS resources to be treated as code (IaC) and therefore the possibility of its integration into the CI/CD cycle. The work contemplates the design and implementation of the CI/CD cycle with the aforementioned tools on the serverless API, with the aim of evaluating its benefits for DevOps teams, as well as drawing conclusions that serve as a guide for developers of this type of applications on AWS. Este trabajo de fin de master trata sobre la automatización de un ciclo de integración/despliegue continuo sobre un API sin servidor basada en una función Lambda desarrollada en Node.js, cuya funcionalidad se expone a través del servicio AWS Lambda en modalidad FaaS (Función como servicio). La implementación hace uso del ecosistema de servicios disponibles en AWS para la automatización del ciclo de vida del desarrollo de una aplicación sin servidor, enfocándose en los procesos para el control de versiones, pruebas, entrega y despliegue de software, todos orquestadas a través de un pipeline. Complementariamente se incorpora el uso de los frameworks de desarrollo de aplicaciones sin servidor: AWS SAM y Serverless, con el objetivo de analizar su aporte en la automatización del despliegue de aplicaciones de este tipo, dado que estas permiten tratar los recursos AWS como código (IaC) y por ende la posibilidad de su integración al ciclo CI/CD. El trabajo contempla el diseño e implementación del ciclo CI/CD con las herramientas antes expuestas sobre la API serverless, con el objetivo de evaluar sus beneficios para los equipos DevOps, así como también elaborar las conclusiones que sirvan de guía para los desarrolladores de este tipo de aplicaciones en AWS.

[ES] El CERN (Centro de Investigación de Física de Altas Energías (HEP)), ofrece desafíos informáticos únicos como consecuencia de la gran cantidad de datos que genera el Gran Colisionador de Hadrones (LHC). El CERN ha concebido y mantiene un software denominado ROOT, que es el estándar de facto para el análisis de datos HEP. Este framework ofrece una interfaz de alto nivel y fácil de utilizar denominada RDataFrame, que permite gestionar y procesar grandes conjuntos de datos. En los últimos años ha visto extendida su funcionalidad para poder aprovechar de capacidades de cómputo distribuidas. Gracias a su modelo de programación declarativa, la API orientada al usuario se puede desacoplar del backend de ejecución real. Este desacoplamiento permite escalar un análisis físico a miles de núcleos computacionales, de manera automática, sobre varios tipos de recursos distribuidos. De hecho, el módulo RDataFrame distribuido ya admite el uso de motores establecidos de la industria en general, como Apache Spark o Dask. No obstante lo anterior, estas soluciones actuales no van a ser suficientes para cumplir con los requisitos futuros en cuanto a la cantidad de datos que van a generar los nuevos aceleradores que están proyectados. Es de interés, por ese motivo, investigar un enfoque diferente, el que ofrece la computación serverless. Basándonos en un primer prototipo que utiliza AWS Lambda, este trabajo presenta la creación de un backend nuevo para RDataFrame distribuido sobre la herramienta OSCAR, un framework de código abierto que soporta la computación serverless. La implementación presenta nuevas formas, con respecto al prototipo basado en AWS Lambda, de sincronizar el trabajo de las funciones., [EN] CERN (Research Center for High Energy Physics (HEP)), offers unique computational challenges as a result of the large amount of data generated by the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). CERN has developed and supports a software called ROOT, which is the de facto standard for HEP data analysis. This framework offers a high-level and easy-to-use interface called RDataFrame, which allows managing and processing large data sets. In recent years, its functionality has been extended to take advantage of distributed computing capabilities. Thanks to its declarative programming model, the user-facing API can be decoupled from the actual execution backend. This decoupling allows physical analysis to scale automatically to thousands of computational cores over various types of distributed resources. In fact, the distributed RDataFrame module already supports the use of established general industry engines such as Apache Spark or Dask. Notwithstanding the foregoing, these current solutions will not be sufficient to meet future requirements in terms of the amount of data that the new projected accelerators will generate. It is of interest, for this reason, to investigate a different approach, the one offered by serverless computing. Based on a first prototype using AWS Lambda, this work presents the creation of a new backend for RDataFrame distributed over the OSCAR tool, an open source framework that supports serverless computing. The implementation introduces new ways, relative to the AWS Lambda-based prototype, to synchronize the work of functions.

La tecnología IoT se está expandiendo cada vez más en numerosos sectores con el fin de mejorar la calidad de vida de las personas. El uso de dispositivos domésticos conectados a Internet permite a sus usuarios ahorrar tiempo e incluso dinero y, en algunas ocasiones, facilitan tareas cotidianas a personas que no pueden hacerlas por ellas mismas. La accesibilidad es un concepto a tener en cuenta para estas aplicaciones que incluyen IoT. Emplear dispositivos conectados a la nube puede no ser tan fácil para personas con distintas limitaciones. Por ejemplo, una persona ciega no podría hacer uso de una interfaz únicamente visual para controlar estos dispositivos, por lo que necesitaría de una interfaz alternativa que no todas las compañías se han molestado en desarrollar. El principal propósito de la realización de este trabajo fue el desarrollo de interfaces accesibles para una aplicación de smart home, con el fin de poder ser utilizadas por el mayor número de personas posible. Para esto se diseñaron dos interfaces distintas empleando los servicios de AWS y Amazon Alexa: Una interfaz visual y otra de voz. Inicialmente, se estudió el estado del arte de las tecnologías a emplear. Posteriormente se diseñaron e implementaron las dos interfaces comentadas: La interfaz visual a través de la aplicación móvil BlueDisplay y la interfaz de voz a través de Amazon Alexa. Ambas interfaces emplean servicios de AWS para conectarse con dispositivos que simulan elementos domésticos. Finalmente, se realizó una demo para mostrar el funcionamiento de las interfaces desarrolladas. Tras el desarrollo de las interfaces propuestas se comprobó el cumplimiento de los objetivos fijados. Estas interfaces son accesibles para personas con distintos tipos de necesidades como discapacidad auditiva, cognitiva, motora o visual. En conclusión, la accesibilidad no debería de plantearse como un problema a resolver en una tecnología ya creada, sino como una tarea más en el proceso de desarrollo de esta.

[ES] RCUDA es una arquitectura cliente-servidor desarrollada por un equipo liderado por Federico Silla en la UPV que proporciona un conjunto de librerías compatibles con CUDA con las que se vincula la aplicación para utilizar de forma remota las GPU disponibles en un servidor externo. AWS Lambda es un servicio de Functions as a Service (FaaS) de AWS, que permite ejecutar funciones en respuesta a eventos en una plataforma computacional administrada dinámicamente que se ajusta automáticamente al número de invocaciones. AWS Lambda no es compatible con la informática basada en GPU. SCAR es una herramienta de código abierto desarrollada en la UPV para crear aplicaciones sin servidor de procesamiento de archivos altamente paralelas y controladas por eventos que se ejecutan en entornos de tiempo de ejecución personalizados proporcionados por contenedores Docker en AWS Lambda. El objetivo de este trabajo es crear una implementación de prueba de concepto que permita que una función de AWS Lambda utilice una GPU remota proporcionada por RCUDA mediante la creación de un entorno de ejecución personalizado que encapsule las bibliotecas de RCUDA, junto con la aplicación. La GPU remota estará disponible mediante una instancia EC2 con soporte de GPU o mediante recursos locales basados en GPU. Este trabajo evaluará los beneficios de costo / rendimiento de la introducción de compatibilidad con GPU remota para funciones Lambda. The goal of this work is to create a proof-of-concept implementation that enables an AWS Lambda function to use a remote GPU provided by RCUDA by creating a custom runtime environment that encapsulates the RCUDA libraries, along with the application. The remote GPU will be available through a GPU-supported EC2 instance or through local GPU-based resources. This paper will evaluate the cost / performance benefits of introducing remote GPU support for Lambda functions. Use cases based on inference from existing deep learning models with GPU support will be integrated.

На сьогоднішній день зображення є невід’ємною частиною нашого життя, адже з кожним роком в мережі інтернет збільшується кількість використаних зображень та відеоматеріалів. Тому питання попередньої обробки і аналізу фотоматеріалів набуває все більш актуального значення. Багато сучасних систем, особливо ті, які зв’язані з медициною почали перехід на підтримку та генерацію зображень. Дані обставини вимагають від програмного забезпечення витримувати суттєве збільшення обсягу виконуваних робіт без суттєвої втрати швидкодії, можливість роботи, як незалежної системи так і інтеграції в алгоритмічні процеси зовнішніх систем. Спроектована система повинна забезпечити легкість масштабування та можливість використання сучасних сервісів зокрема хмарних технологій. Мета дослідження: архітектура програмного забезпечення по обробці оцифрованих зображень на основі використання хмарних технологій. Для реалізації поставленої мети були сформульовані наступні завдання, а саме: – аналіз сучасних рішень та систем в яких можна використовувати дане програмне забезпечення; – вибір необхідного функціоналу для роботи з зображеннями, як для систем, які б могли інтегрувати розроблене програмне забезпечення; – вибір стеку технологій, який базується на основі тенденцій розвитку ринку хмарних технологій, а саме розгляд Google Cloud, Amazon Cloud, Microsoft Azure; – проектування та реалізація хмарної архітектури по обробці оцифрованих зображень можливістю легкого маштабування; – аналіз отриманих результатів. Предмет дослідження: є архітектурні рішення та підходи для перетворення та редагування оцифрованого зображення з використанням хмарних технологій. Наукова новизна результатів магістерської дисертації полягає в тому, що вдосконалено архітектурне рішення на основі хмарних технологій для побудови програмного забезпечення для обробки оцифрованих фотографій, яке забезпечує можливість збільшення швидкості відправки зображень на сторонній сервіс та може інтегруватися у якості сервісу з іншими системами, що дає змогу побудови складних процесів по обробці зображень. Практичне значення отриманих результатів полягає в тому, що реалізовано програмне забезпечення з використання хмарних технологій, що містить функції обробки, передачі, зберігання, персоналізаціїї та захисту персональної інформації. Many modern systems, especially those related to medicine, have begun to move to support and generate images. These circumstances require the software to withstand a significant increase in the amount of work performed without significant loss of speed, the ability to work as an independent system and integration into the algorithmic processes of external systems. The designed system should provide ease of scaling and the ability to use modern services, including cloud technologies. The aim of the study. The main target of this master's dissertation is architecture of digital image processing software based on the use of cloud technologies. Object of research: the process of processing digital images using cloud technologies. Subject of research: methods of converting and editing a digital image using cloud technologies. To achieve this goal, the following tasks were formulated: – analysis of modern solutions and systems in which you can use this software; – selection of the necessary functionality for working with images, as for systems that could integrate the developed software; – the choice of technology stack, which is based on trends in the cloud technology market, namely the consideration of Google Cloud, Amazon Cloud, Microsoft Azure; – design and implementation of cloud architecture for processing digital images with the possibility of easy scaling; – analysis of the obtained results. У складі дипломної роботи розглянуто теоретичні та практичні аспекти побудови програмного продукту для пошуку наукових матеріалів в інтернеті за ключовими словами. Метою роботи було створення відкритого API з наявними функціями пошуку, фільтрації та нормалізації наукових матеріалів отриманих з використанням єдиного методу доступу до відкритих наукометричних баз. Задля досягнення мети спроектовано загальний стандарт підключення багатьох наукових баз даних, реалізовано алгоритми фільтрації та нормалізації отриманих даних, розроблено єдиний формат вхідних/вихідних даних модуля, виконано розгортання програмного продукту на віддалених серверах Amazon, пройдено тестування і налагодження системи на реальних даних. The paper considers theoretical and practical aspects of building a software product for searching scientific materials on the Internet by keywords. The aim of the work was to create an open API with the available functions of search, filtering and normalization of scientific materials obtained using a single method of access to open scientometric databases. To achieve this goal, a common standard for connecting many scientific databases was designed, algorithms for filtering and normalizing the obtained data were implemented, a single input / output data format of the module was developed, software was deployed on remote Amazon servers, and the system was tested and debugged on real data. В составе дипломной работы рассмотрены теоретические и практические аспекты построения программного продукта для поиска научных материалов в интернете по ключевым словам. Целью работы было создание открытого API с имеющимися функциями поиска, фильтрации и нормализации научных материалов полученных с использованием единого метода доступа к открытым наукометрических баз. Для достижения цели спроектировано общий стандарт подключения многих научных баз данных, реализованы алгоритмы фильтрации и нормализации полученных данных, разработан единый формат входных / выходных данных модуля, выполнено развертывание программного продукта на удаленных серверах Amazon, пройдено тестирование и отладка системы на реальных данных.

Це дозволить більш ефективно використовувати веб-сервіси на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень та зменшити операційні затрати. Провести аналіз проблем ефективності використання веб-сервісів на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень та огляд існуючих методів іх вирішення. 2. Проаналізувати існуючі методи покращення ефективності використання веб-сервісів на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень та зформувати підхід до автоматичного обчислення коефіцієнта маштабування. 3. Вдосконалити метод активації веб-сервісів на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень за рахунок автоматичного обчислення коефіцієнта маштабування. 4. Вдосконаливши метод активації, за рахунок автоматичного обчислення коефіцієнта маштабування активних екземплярів веб-сервіса вдалося підвищити ефективність використання цього веб-сервіса, що було підтверджено результатами проведеного аналізу. За результами роботи було розроблено стартап-проект для оцінки затрат на реалізацію методу активації та можливого прибутку від його вдосконалення. Наукова новизна: Запропоновано підхід до автоматичного обчислення коефіцієнта маштабування який базується на вимірюванні трафіку вебсервіса, що дозволить підвищити ефективність використання веб-сервісів на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень. Практична цінність: Результати дослідження забезпечують зменшення операційних витрат на впровадження методу активації вебсервісів на основі безсерверних хмарних обчислень та більш ефективне викорастання хмарних ресурсів. Actuality: The activation method allows you to provide ultra-low latency in work with web services based on serverless cloud computing. You give the program how many instances of a particular web service you want to keep active and it will handle the scaling for you. Web service traffic may increase over time, which means that you need to keep more active instances, or less, if traffic decreases. You need to have some scaling factor that will be calculated automatically based on the current traffic of the web service. This will allow more efficient use of web services based on serverless cloud computing and reduce operating costs. Object of research: The process of using web services based on serverless cloud computing. Subject of research: Method of activating web services based on serverless cloud computing. Aim of research: Improve the method of activating web services based on serverless cloud computing to increase their capacity utilization. Research objectives: 1. Analyze the capacity utilization problems of web services based on serverless cloud computing and review the existing solutions. 2. Analyze existing methods for improving the capacity utilization of web services based on serverless cloud computing and develop an approach to automatic calculation of the scaling factor. 3. Improve the method of activating web services based on serverless cloud computing by automatically calculating the scaling factor. 4. Analyze the capacity utilization of web services of the test system before and after the improvement of the activation method. 5. Develop a startup project. Based on the analysis, the problem of low capacity utilization of web services based on serverless cloud computing was revealed. The analysis showed that one of the ways to increase the capacity utilization is to improve the method of activating web services based on serverless cloud computing. After improving the activation method, by automatically calculating the scaling factor of the active instances of the web service, it was possible to increase the capacity utilization of this web service, which was confirmed by the results of the analysis after implementation. Based on the results of the work, a startup project was developed to estimate the cost of implementation of the activation method and the possible benefits of its improvement. Scientific novelty: Offered the approach to automatic calculation of scaling factor which is based on measurement of traffic of web service that will allow to increase the capacity utilization of web services based on serverless cloud computing. Practical value: The results of the study provide a reduction in operating costs for the implementation of the method of activating web services based on serverless cloud computing and more efficient use of cloud resources. Research methods: The main research methods are mathematical and simulation modeling.

The shift towards microservisation which can be observed in recent developments of the cloud landscape for applications has led towards the emergence of the Function as a Service (FaaS) concept, also called Serverless. This term describes the event-driven, reactive programming paradigm of functional components in container instances, which are scaled, deployed, executed and billed by the cloud provider on demand. However, increasing reports of issues of Serverless services have shown significant obscurity regarding its reliability. In particular, developers and especially system administrators struggle with latency compliance. In this paper, following a systematic literature review, the performance indicators influencing traffic and the effective delivery of the provider&rsquo, s underlying infrastructure are determined by carrying out empirical measurements based on the example of a File Upload Stream on Amazon&rsquo, s Web Service Cloud. This popular example was used as an experimental baseline in this study, based on different incoming request rates. Different parameters were used to monitor and evaluate changes through the function&rsquo, s logs. It has been found that the so-called Cold-Start, meaning the time to provide a new instance, can increase the Round-Trip-Time by 15%, on average. Cold-Start happens after an instance has not been called for around 15 min, or after around 2 h have passed, which marks the end of the instance&rsquo, s lifetime. The research shows how the numbers have changed in comparison to earlier related work, as Serverless is a fast-growing field of development. Furthermore, emphasis is given towards future research to improve the technology, algorithms, and support for developers.

Function-as-a-Service (FaaS) pertains to a recent advancement in cloud computing known as serverless computing. A group of technologies provided as ”services” that shift the responsibility of provisioning resources to the cloud operator and offer a fine-grained cost model. Despite the growing popularity of FaaS within the research community, evaluating the performance and cost of different resource management, scheduling, and provisioning policies remains a difficult endeavor. Conducting experiments in the cloud is costly and usually yields unpredictable results due to the underlying hardware heterogeneity of cloud infrastructures. Whereas previous work has focused on providing open-source FaaS im- plementations, the requirements for conducting a custom practical systems study in FaaS remain steep both intellectually and financially. To render practical systems research in FaaS more accessible, we propose in this work OpenDC Serverless: an expandable trace-based simulator that provides a toolkit for mod- elling and testing custom FaaS patterns. The simulator exposes custom interfaces for the implementation of resource allocation, management, and scheduling policies. It further supports the modification of its core architectural components. Moreover, included in the toolkit is an experimentation framework that specifies an easy-to-convert-to trace format, facilitating the exchange of inputs in the community. OpenDC Serverless also provides an interface for conducting controlled and repeatable experiments. It allows checking each experiment with fine granularity, through a metric monitoring system that allows tracking of detailed metrics in the simulation. We prototype OpenDC Serverless and conduct with it representative experiments. We showcase the simulation performance of OpenDC serverless in a reproduction experiment that involves the optimisation of a real FaaS workload through the use of a custom op- erational policy; The results indicate that the simulator produces valid results. We then highlight the ability of OpenDC Serverless to explore and characterize real scenarios with an experiment on simulating cold-starts in AWS Lambda.

Emergence of cloud computing as the inevitable IT computing paradigm, the perception of the compute reference model and building of services has evolved into new dimensions. Serverless computing is an execution model in which the cloud service provider dynamically manages the allocation of compute resources of the server. The consumer is billed for the actual volume of resources consumed by them, instead paying for the pre-purchased units of compute capacity. This model evolved as a way to achieve optimum cost, minimum configuration overheads, and increases the application's ability to scale in the cloud. The prospective of the serverless compute model is well conceived by the major cloud service providers and reflected in the adoption of serverless computing paradigm. This review paper presents a comprehensive study on serverless computing architecture and also extends an experimentation of the working principle of serverless computing reference model adapted by AWS Lambda. The various research avenues in serverless computing are identified and presented.
