THEATER TEACHERS, ARCHITECTS, EDUCATORS, SCHOOL SUPERINTENDENTS, EQUIPMENT SALES REPRESENTATIVES, THEATER TECHNICIANS, ENGINEERS, AND ACOUSTICAL SPECIALISTS PARTICIPATED. THE DISCUSSIONS INCLUDED NOT ONLY SECONDARY BUT ALSO GRAMMAR SCHOOL AND COLLEGE-LEVEL THEATER. POSITION PAPERS WERE PRESENTED ON THE STATUS AND PROBLEMS OF PERSONNEL, ENGINEERING TEACHING METHODS, EQUIPMENT, ACOUSTICS, AND AUDITORIUMS. SUGGESTIONS FOR STRUCTURAL PLANS WERE DESCRIBED AND ILLUSTRATED WITHIN THE REPORT. THE PLANS AND POINTS BROUGHT UP FOR DISCUSSION WERE INTENDED TO BE OF HELP (1) TO THE SECONDARY SCHOOL TEACHER IN DRAWING UP SPECIFICATIONS FOR PROJECTED THEATER FACILITIES, (2) TO THE INDIVIDUAL ADMINISTRATORS AS A BASIS FOR EVALUATING PROPOSALS, (3) AS SUGGESTIONS OF ALTERNATE SOLUTIONS, (4) AS GUIDELINES FOR STANDARD, RECOMMENDED FACILITIES, (5) FOR BOARD MEMBERS IN EVALUATING THE INVESTMENT IN TERMS OF MONEY, SPACE, AND PERSONNEL FOR THIS PARTICULAR TEACHING AREA, AND (6) FOR THE ARCHITECT AND BUILDER WHO, ALTHOUGH WELL VERSED IN PLANNING, MAY LACK SPECIFIC INFORMATION NECESSARY FOR PLANNING OF EFFICIENT THEATER FACILITIES. THE OBJECTIVES OF THIS STUDY WERE (1) TO DEVELOP GUIDELINES FOR ADOPTING CURRENT COLLEGE COURSES FOR THE PRESENTATION BY LARGE-SCREEN TELEVISION IN LARGE AUDITORIUMS, (2) TO IDENTIFY AND DEVELOP TECHNIQUES FOR LARGE-SCREEN TV INSTRUCTION, (3) TO DEVELOP STUDENT AND FACULTY ORIENTATION PROCEDURES FOR LARGE-SCREEN TV PROGRAMS, (4) TO ASCERTAIN OPTIMUM DISTANCE AND VIEWING ANGLES, AND (5) TO ANALYZE ECONOMIC IMPLICATIONS AND INSTRUCTIONAL VALUE OF LARGE-SCREEN TELEVISION AS PART OF CURRICULUM PLANNING. EACH OF THESE OBJECTIVES IS TREATED SEPARATELY IN THIS REPORT. THE TREATMENT IS PRIMARILY DESCRIPTIVE AND SUGGESTIVE--EXPERIMENTAL ACTIVITIES ARE REPORTED AND INTERPRETED WITH THE USE OF TRADITIONAL CONTROLLED RESEARCH TECHNIQUES ONLY IN CONNECTION WITH PARTS OF THE INVESTIGATION. THE STUDY SUPPORTS THE VAST ARRAY OF TV STUDIES SHOWING NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES IN MEASURED LEARNING OR INFORMATION GAIN BETWEEN FACE-TO-FACE INSTRUCTION AND TELEVISION. The information available on current developments in the planning and use of educational facilities is dispersed among many resources. This publication gathers up the scattered information on all the lively facilities topics and complements it with the names and addresses of prime information sources for interested public officials, planners, educators, students, and citizens. Community services programs for the Foothill Community College District are described and statistics indicating their level of activity for 1970-71 are presented. This progress report also includes a 5-year budget projection and future program plans. The recreation program includes structured and unstructured athletic and recreational events. A unique science services program operates two planetaria, an observatory, an electronics museum, and a science affiliates program. A firearms range is available for community use in addition to law enforcement training. A program of professional entertainment is scheduled to provide the community a cultural center. Short courses, seminars, symposia, and workshops of general interest are offered on a non-credit basis. Music organizations include a 150-voice symphonic choir, a chamber orchestra, and a symphony orchestra. A radio station draws on outside sources as well as on campus and community talent to operate 18 hours a day. An art gallery provides a program of exhibits. Several auditoriums and other facilities are available and encouraged for use by the public. Service functions provided by the Public Information Officer, Box Office personnel, and Facilities Coordinator are also described. (MN)

A survey of the amount and utilization of non-residential state university campus space available for potential higher education classroom usage is presented for all of the public colleges and universities in Illinois. The survey categorizes the space--(1) by an inventory of net assignable space, and (2) by the utilization of net assignable space for classrooms, instructional laboratories, other teaching facilities, offices, library, gymnasium, student union, bookstore, hospital and health services, auditorium, museum, and theater. A room period usage inventory is given for classrooms and instructional laboratories. Recommendations and suggested techniques are given for achieving utilization standards. The appendix includes tables of data collected by the survey from each of the colleges and universities. (HH)

Special education and school equipment for handicapped students, particularly for those in wheel chairs, are outlined with suggestions for increasing the quality and effectiveness of special education instruction. Guidelines are given for the provision of an adequate learning environment for handicapped students. Special furniture and equipment is discussed including--(1) tables and desks, (2) bookcases and storage cabinets, (3) chalkboards, (4) audiovisual and communication aids, and (5) mobility and postural equipment. Equipment needs in the different physical and functional areas within the school discussed included--(1) classrooms and laboratories, (2) cafeterias, and (3) recreational facilities. The first Canadian attempt to provide a comprehensive educational environment to satisfy the demands for "flexibility" in the educational continuum from kindergarten to grade 13 is discussed. The complex integrates three levels of learning into one campus, providing facilities for collegiate pupils, senior school students, and junior school students. An academic structure was designed to--(1) accommodate present educational needs and provide for change in future educational philosophy and methods, (2) utilize new component systems, and (3) share common facilities. All three facilities are grouped on one site, which allows for more meaningful site relationships between schools in terms of outdoor space and sports facilities, pedestrian circulation, mechanical distribution, service access and community use, and the physical manifestation of a "student village" concept. A complete statement on "the open stage" which will prove of value to architects, consulting engineers and school administrators in the construction of college, community and school auditorium theaters. Directors and teachers of drama should find this booklet a practical source of advanced technical knowledge in their field. The introduction deals with the language of vision in general while the remaining sections are directed specifically to architects, engineers, administrators, dramatics and background projection. A list of the articles and papers in the science facilities collection of the Architectural Services Staff is presented. It has been prepared to serve as a bibliography that may be useful to persons searching for data on the design of science facilities, and as a means of informing such persons of the material available for reference in the offices of the National Science Foundation in Washington, D. C. In addition to the references included in this publication, the collection contains many manufacturers' product catalogs covering the laboratory equipment, furnishings and construction components used in science facilities. Articles and papers are listed for the following topical areas--(1) physical plant planning, (2) physical plant cost and management, (3) space utilization and measurement, (4) general design and construction of science facilities, (5) environmental conditions for learning, (6) science building type studies, and (7) special facilities and equipment. High School auditoriums are often much too large, serve a limited number of functions, and are unused a major portion of the year. This paper details designs for auditorium modification in six high schools aimed at making the space more usable for such functions as small lectures, lunchrooms, libraries, etc. This document previously announced as ED 018 084. Building designs which have been significant in the development of the divisible auditorium and theater and the fundamental concepts of the multi-purpose facility were reviewed. While not a comprehensive collection of divisible facilities, the installations reported on are those that appear to be landmarks in the evolution of the multi-use concept, and not necessarily those that represent the highest development of a particular approach to divisibility. The installations reviewed range from teaching auditoriums in high schools to multi-arts theaters at a university. In addition, a section is included on the acoustics of the operable or movable partition which is often utilized in divisible facilities. This document previously announced as ED 015629. (BH)
